- Abstract
Many elderly patients have long-term physical disability and in order for them to maintain a certain level of independence either in hospital or in the community, great attention must be paid to devising programmes to overcome problems and enhance residual abilities.Originally published in 1985, the programme described in this book had developed over the previous 25 years at the Royal Newcastle Hospital in Australia. It grew in response to the practical needs of patients who, having been treated by conventional means, were left with residual disabilities to a degree that their successful return to the community was jeopardised. The retraining programme described is a problem-solving process, coordinated under one director, combined with close teamwork between staff, the patient and relatives. Throughout, attention is paid to social and psychological factors as well as physical problems, when discussing physical retraining methods involving the repetition of routine movements.

- Abstract
The aim of this project was to design a shoulder rehabilitation machine tailored for elderly individuals, focusing solely on the mechanical aspect initially. Following industry-standard and safety-regarding methodology, the specific rehabilitation needs of the elderly population were identified, and detailed specifications and requirements were established. A design concept was proposed and evaluated, with the selected concept being further developed to address the identified rehabilitation needs effectively, meeting all the previously specified requirements. Risk assessment methodology has been carried out, deeply defining the limits of the designed machine, identifying the potential hazards, estimating and evaluating the risks and proposing the first iteration of safety measures to be furtherly implemented. Basic design has been developed, by considering weights and dimensions of the mechanical components, considering factors such as ease of use, comfort, and safety for elderly users. Also material selection was carefully assessed, taking into account properties like durability, cost-effectiveness, and eco-friendliness. More detailed design was materialised via virtual CAD model, which has been created using SolidWorks software, allowing for detailed visualisation and refinement of the design. Structural analysis was conducted using SolidWorks FEM simulations to ensure the mechanical integrity and safety of the machine. Optimisation was performed based on the results of the structural analysis to enhance the machine's performance while minimising its weight and ensuring it met safety standards for elderly users. Finally, the project's technical and economic feasibility was assessed, documenting the manufacturing and assembly processes, as well as considering factors such as environmental impact and budget constraints specific to the development of a shoulder rehabilitation machine for elderly individuals.

- Abstract
Gerontology professionals offer suggestions to enrich the quality of rehabilitation services offered to the institutionalized elderly. This exciting volume examines up-to-the-minute ideas--some that would have been unlikely even a few years ago--that focus exclusively on rehabilitation services for the institutionalized elderly. Despite the strong move toward more community health services in the last decade, the essential role of the nursing home in the long term care continuum is continuing to expand. Perspectives on the response of elderly persons to therapeutic interventions are addressed--including the positive effects of such techniques as touch in therapy, group psychotherapy, and verbal and activity interventions. A significant exploration of the use of technological applications to promote independent living adds a new dimension to the use of technology in the field of gerontology--often a mixed blessing to chronically ill persons.

- Abstract
Geriatric Rehabilitation addresses the fact that this is an age in which individuals have increasing longevity, better health care, education and expectations of health care which present new, increasing and even radical challenges to health care providers. The care of our older patients in rehabilitation settings demands the broad understanding of the key differences in strategies to care for older adults. The combined skills embraced in rehabilitation and geriatrics are presenting unprecedented opportunities for both fields to make substantive and even ground-breaking improvements in the lives of millions of older adults who entrust their lives to us. Rarely in one's medical career are such opportunities so evident and achievable. Geriatric Rehabilitation edited by Dr. K. Rao Poduri, MD. FAAPMR draws on a distinguished group of authors who are the front-line providers of care to the older adults. This book presents the full spectrum of the unique care needs of older patients who need the combined skills of physical medicine and geriatrics. It provides an easily accessible means of acquiring and improving these new skills for all those involved in geriatric care.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Ostensibly a book about therapy dogs, this thoughtful work also looks at the shortcomings of nursing-home life. Dog lovers will enjoy the antics of Hugo's chocolate Lab, who is a great icebreaker at a home, and will learn that dogs needn't be perfectly behaved to be good in their role (far from it, in this case). Readers also learn that residents too often can be neglected by family, even those who live nearby, and that the effects of this neglect are huge in already severely circumscribed lives. Teens volunteering, or contemplating it, at nursing homes and hospitals, as well as social-studies students, will get a great deal out of this sympathetic volume and will be much more understanding and able to help residents/patients in practical but small ways.

The purpose of restorative care nursing is to take an active role in helping older adults maintain their highest level of function, thus preventing excess disability. This book was written to help formal and informal caregivers and administrators at all levels to understand the basic philosophy of restorative care, and be able to develop and implement successful restorative care programs. The book provides a complete 6-week education program in restorative care for caregivers, many suggestions for suitable activities, and practical strategies for motivating both older adults and caregivers to engage in restorative care. In addition, the book provides an overview of the requirements for restorative care across all settings, the necessary documentation, and ways in which to complete that documentation.

- Abstract
Telling the Stories of Life through Guided Autobiography Groups, based on James Birren's 25 years of conducting autobiography groups, discusses all the topics an organizer faces while developing a program for adults who want to recall and write down their life histories. This book is ideal for adult education programs, church groups, social workers, psychologists, gerontologists, and others who work with adults who might be interested in exploring, recording, or sharing their personal histories. It helps professionals and trained workshop leaders at community centers, senior centers, schools and other settings guide group participants in exploring major themes of their lives so that they can organize and write their stories and share them in a group with others on the same journey. This exercise is rewarding for adults of any age in a period of transition or with interest in gaining insight from their own stories. Personal development and a feeling of connection to other participants and their stories is a natural outcome of this process. This book provides background material and detailed lesson plans for those who wish to develop and lead an autobiography group. The authors explain the concept of guided autobiography, discuss the benefits to the group participants, and provide logistical information on how to plan, organize, and set up a group. An appendix provides exercises, handouts, and suggested adaptations for specific groups. The book also explains a systematic method of priming memories, including the history of family and of one's life work, the role of money, health and the body, and ideas about death. At a time when rapid change has created a widespread yearning to write down and exchange personal accounts, sharing life stories can reveal a great deal about how we have come to be the persons we are. Telling the Stories of Life through Guided Autobiography Groups shows how to organize, record, and share life experiences through a proven and effective technique.

- Abstract
Based on the belief that older people have good stories to tell, Story Writing in a Nursing Home was developed as part of a volunteer teaching service to a nursing home. Graduate students who were learning to teach this special population conducted story writing activities with older adults and found that even the frail elderly who are confined to nursing centers provided a unique perspective about events that emphasize the lasting verities in life. The idea of a patchwork was derived from one of the lessons taught and was suggested by one of the older participants who said, “We're sort of like a patchwork quilt.” The information, memories, and humor the elderly see in situations is worth recording. In addition, Story Writing in a Nursing Home emphasizes the way to develop the mental stimulation that is so important for physical well being. This sensitive and insightful book provides a lesson plan outline and the type of content that was used as an example. It also provides a running commentary in the form of a diary that tells how to begin a teaching program for nursing center residents. Students and professionals interested in implementing a similar program can use these ideas for planning and for organizing the use of student help to better serve the population. Fascinating reading, this book includes stories by frail elderly people, lesson plans, tips on working with administrators in a nursing center, and reasons for providing instruction. Teachers, volunteers, librarians, gerontology/sociology students, and others concerned with the well-being of the elderly will refer often to this instructive volume.

- Abstract
'Guided autobiography,'write the authors,'is ideally suited to foster in the older adult a belief that his or her life is meaningful and something of which to be proud.'This book helps professionals—at senior centers, community centers, and other service facilities—guide older adults and others in preparing their autobiographies. Many older adults, the authors explain, have limited social networks. Widowhood, retirement, and other'involuntary transitions'create a loss of roles, which can damage the older adult's sense of identity and self-worth. Guided autobiography can be used very effectively with such persons—to promote their general well- being, develop friendships, and create increased feelings of self-sufficiency.The book's chapters treat such topics as eliciting themes from people's lives, promoting creative thinking, facilitating group interaction, and mastering obstacles in the group process. Based on the authors'fourteen years of experience leading groups in guided autobiography, this book will be of special interest to gerontologists, psychologists, social workers, and other professionals who conduct activity programs for older people.
