3. Identification of roadkill hotspots and the factors affecting wombat vehicle collisions using the citizen science tool, WomSAT.

Abstract

Roads directly impact wildlife through vehicle collisions. In Australia only a few studies have examined the impact of environmental characteristics on wombat roadkill. We analysed wombat roadkills reported into WomSAT, a website and application where citizen scientists can upload sightings of wombats, to map wombat roadkill across their distribution. We used Maxent software to identify the main factors influencing wombat roadkill hotspots. A total of 2391 wombat deaths on roads were reported by 567 citizen scientists from 2015 to 2019. More wombat roadkill deaths occurred in winter, with most unaffected by sarcoptic mange. The average daily solar exposure, distance to populated areas, precipitation of warmest quarter (bio 18), temperature seasonality (bio 4), and precipitation seasonality (bio 15) were identified as the main factors influencing wombat roadkill. The most roadkills reported per kilometre (3.7/km) occurred on Old Bega Road and Steeple Flat Road, in the New South Wales southern tablelands. Reduced reporting corresponded with a reduced number of citizen scientists continuing to report sightings over time, reflecting the limitations of the data collected by citizen scientists. However, data should continue to be collected by citizen scientists as it is an easy and low-cost method of collecting data over large areas, and can provide information to managers to support conservation efforts directed at reducing roadkill. Our study emphasises the need to continue to engage and reward citizen scientists for their efforts. Wildlife are impacted by vehicle collisions, including wombats. Based on reports submitted by citizen scientists of wombats killed by vehicles and entered into the WomSAT database we identified wombat roadkill hotspots. Wombats were most often observed to be killed during winter on dual carriageways, and not be suffering from sarcoptic mange. 19. The medium-term results of acromioclavicular joint arthroscopy with chondral and meniscal debridement.

Abstract

Purpose: Surgical management of a young patient with a stable but painful acromioclavicular (AC) joint but normal imagining is a challenging problem. A standard arthroscopic excision of distal clavicle seems too aggressive. An alternative procedure is arthroscopic debridement of the joint, particularly the often torn meniscus, and chondroplasty. This study demonstrates in younger patients the medium-term result of arthroscopic debridement of a painful AC joint. Method(s): Fifty-three young adult patients with a stable but painful AC joint, and virtually normal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan, had arthroscopic debridement of the AC joint. Follow-up was with questionnaire and American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Shoulder Score (ASES). Result(s): Mean age was 29 years (18-39), 41 male, 31 dominant arm. Twenty-two patients demonstrated additional shoulder pathology. Two patients had a later distal clavicle excision. Five patients had later surgery to other areas of the shoulder but had an asymptomatic AC joint. Thirty-eight patients completed the ASES questionnaire at mean 44 months (24-86) post-operation. The mean ASES score was 82.8 (52-100). There was no association between ASES score and AC joint disease severity found at operation (p = 0.25). Seven patients had ongoing shoulder symptoms, although none were severe enough to warrant any treatment. Conclusion(s): In this young group of patients with arthroscopic AC joint debridement, most had good relief of the AC joint related symptoms. This is a worthwhile procedure in the young patient, with quick recovery, and does not preclude further AC joint surgery later.Copyright © The Author(s) 2018.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Haemoglobin (Hb) G-Philadelphia mutation is a common alpha-globin chain variant [α68(E17)Asn > Lys]. Combined high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and isoelectric focusing (IEF) can be used in a presumptive diagnosis of Hb G-Philadelphia, but there are other α-chain variants with a similar phenotype that cannot be excluded. Our aim was to develop a novel StyI restriction enzyme assay to diagnose the common Hb G-Philadelphia mutation and to identify any other variants with a similar phenotype by DNA sequencing. METHODS: Thirty-one cases given a presumptive diagnosis as Hb G-Philadelphia by HPLC and IEF were subjected to DNA analysis by restriction enzyme digestion using StyI. Negative cases were then subjected to DNA sequencing. RESULTS: Twenty-two cases (78.6%) of 28 cases amplified were tested positive for Hb G-Philadelphia by StyI restriction digestion. Sequencing of the six negative cases revealed two cases of Hb G-Philadelphia with C→A mutation in codon 68 in α2 globin gene, plus one case each of Hb G-Norfolk Hb Stanleyville-II, Hb Matsue-Oki and Hb Mizushi. CONCLUSION: A novel StyI restriction enzyme can be used to confirm the commonest type of Hb G-Philadelphia. DNA sequencing identified four other α-chain variants with a similar HPLC and IEF phenotype.

Summary: Sarcoptic mange is caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei and has recently been recognized as an emerging infectious disease of wildlife worldwide. The mite is one of the main causes of population decline in southern hairy‐nosed (Lasiorhinus latifrons) and bare‐nosed wombats (Vombatus ursinus). This review focuses on Sarcoptes scabiei infestations in wombats and provides insights into why the disease may be so prevalent in wombats. Current treatment practices and trials conducted in the field to reduce the incidence of sarcoptic mange in wombats are described and critically reviewed. Abstract

We developed a series of interrelated locus-specific databases to store all published and unpublished genetic variation related to hemoglobinopathies and thalassemia and implemented microattribution to encourage submission of unpublished observations of genetic variation to these public repositories. A total of 1,941 unique genetic variants in 37 genes, encoding globins and other erythroid proteins, are currently documented in these databases, with reciprocal attribution of microcitations to data contributors. Our project provides the first example of implementing microattribution to incentivise submission of all known genetic variation in a defined system. It has demonstrably increased the reporting of human variants, leading to a comprehensive online resource for systematically describing human genetic variation in the globin genes and other genes contributing to hemoglobinopathies and thalassemias. The principles established here will serve as a model for other systems and for the analysis of other common and/or complex human genetic diseases. © 2011 Nature America, Inc. All rights reserved.
