Background Limited data exist on the differential association between neighborhood characteristics such as crime and violence and diabetes outcomes by race. Objective To examine racial differences in the relationship between neighborhood characteristics (crime and violence) and glycemic control in a sample of adults with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Design A cross-sectional study. Participants 601 adults with T2DM from the Southeastern United States. Measurements Outcome was glycemic control. Neighborhood violence and crime were the primary independent variable, and previously validated scales and indices were used to assess neighborhood crime and violence. Covariates included age, gender, education, marital status, income, hours of work per week, duration of diabetes, comorbidity, health status, and site of recruitment. Multiple linear regression was used to assess the relationship between neighborhood characteristics (violence and crime) and glycemic control adjusting for relevant covariates. Results Approximately 66% of the sample population was Black with ages ranging between 49–71 years. The unadjusted mean hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) was significantly higher for Black adults compared to White adults (8.0 ± 2.0 vs. 7.8 ± 1.6; p = 0.002). In the fully adjusted stratified model, glycemic control was significantly associated with neighborhood crime (β-coefficient: 0.36; 95% CI 0.07, 0.65) and neighborhood violence (β-coefficient: 0.14; 95% CI 0.003, 0.28) for White adults in the fully adjusted model; these relationships were not significant for Black adults. Conclusion In this sample of adults with T2DM, neighborhood crime and violence were significantly associated with glycemic control for White adults, but not for Black adults. Additional research is needed to understand perceptions of neighborhood crime and violence between White adults and Black adults with T2DM.

Objectives To quantify changes in adherence to mask and distancing guidelines in outdoor settings in Philadelphia, PA before and after President Trump announced he was infected with COVID-19. Methods We used Systematic Observation of Masking Adherence and Distancing (SOMAD) to assess mask adherence in parks, playgrounds, and commercial streets in the 10 City Council districts in Philadelphia PA. We compared adherence rates between August and September 2020 and after October 2, 2020. Results Disparities in mask adherence existed by age group, gender, and race/ethnicity, with females wearing masks correctly more often than males, seniors having higher mask use than other age groups, and Asians having higher adherence than other race/ethnicities. Correct mask use did not increase after the City released additional mask guidance in September but did after Oct 2. Incorrect mask use also decreased, but the percentage not having masks at all was unchanged. Conclusions Vulnerability of leadership appears to influence population behavior. Public health departments likely need more resources to effectively and persuasively communicate critical safety messages related to COVID-19 transmission.

Adherence to guidelines for face coverings and physical distancing are critical strategies to stem the COVID-19 pandemic but are not uniformly followed. Understanding factors associated with adherence to mask-wearing and physical distancing may help guide future control efforts. We conducted an observational study using Systematic Observation of Mask Adherence and Distancing (SOMAD) in August 2020 in parks, playgrounds and commercial streets in each of 10 City Council Districts in Philadelphia, PA. Wearing a mask correctly varied by setting with highest adherence in commercial areas and lowest in playgrounds. Almost 17% wore visible masks that did not cover the nose and/or mouth. Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) spreads rapidly and is easily contracted by individuals who come near infected persons. With this nature and rapid spread of the contagion, different types of research have been conducted to investigate how non-pharmaceutical interventions can be employed to contain and prevent COVID-19. In this review, we analyzed the key elements of digital contact tracing strategies developed for the prevention and containment of the dreaded epidemic since its outbreak. We carried out a scoping review through relevant studies indexed in three databases, namely Google Scholar, PubMed, and ACM Digital Library. Using some carefully defined search terms, a total of 768 articles were identified. The review shows that 86.32% (n = 101) of the works focusing on contact tracing were published in 2020, suggesting there was an increased awareness that year, increased research efforts, and the fact that the pandemic was given a very high priority by most journals. We observed that many (47.86%, n = 56) of the studies were focused on design and implementation issues in the development of COVID-19 contact tracing systems. In addition, has been established that most of the studies were conducted in 41 countries and that contract tracing app development are characterized by some sensitive issues, including privacy-preserving and case-based referral characteristics.

This review examines the effects of particle properties on drug–carrier interactions in the preparation of a dry powder inhaler (DPI) formulation, including appropriate mixing technology. The interactive effects of carrier properties on DPI formulation performance make it difficult to establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship between any one carrier property and its effect on the performance of a DPI formulation. Alpha lactose monohydrate remains the most widely used carrier for DPI formulations. The physicochemical properties of α-lactose monohydrate particles, such as particle size, shape and solid form, are profoundly influenced by the method of production. Therefore, wide variations in these properties are inevitable. In this review, the role of surface energetics in the optimisation of dry powder inhaler formulations is considered in lactose carrier selection. Several useful lactose particle modification methods are discussed as well as the use of fine lactose and force control agents in formulation development. It is concluded that where these have been investigated, the empirical nature of the studies does not permit early formulation prediction of product performance, rather they only allow the evaluation of final formulation quality. The potential to leverage particle interaction dynamics through the use of an experimental design utilising quantifiable lactose particle properties and critical quality attributes, e.g., surface energetics, is explored, particularly with respect to when a Quality-by-Design approach has been used in optimisation.

Background: Diseases affecting the gastrointestinal tract and its accessory organs like the liver, gall bladder and the pancreas have become a global concern as they are characterized by morbidities with high burden to both the individual and the economy. Objective: To describe the pattern of various gastrointestinal and hepatic diseases at a tertiary institution. Methods: A retrospective study of consecutive new referrals for ambulatory clinic visits to a Gastroenterology and Hepatology Clinic between May 2014 and May 2016 was conducted. Results: There were 259 new cases comprising 148 (57.1%) males and 111 (42.9%) females, aged 16-89 years with a mean age of 42.0 ±15.5 years. The commonest reasons for referral included asymptomatic chronic Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) infection (35.9%), chronic liver disease (CLD) (12.4%), hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) (11.6%) and dyspepsia (10%). Asymptomatic HBV infection, CLD and HCC were more frequent among the males, whereas dyspeptic complains were more prevalent among the females (p = 0.008). Conclusion: Asymptomatic chronic hepatitis B virus infection, which is the leading cause of chronic liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma, was the most common reason for ambulatory gastroenterology and hepatology consultation in this study. Therefore, more effective measures for the eradication of the hepatitis B virus are desired.

Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), is a national epidemic in Countries affected. It is also a potential global public health pandemic. The menace of the disease outbreak among West and Central African nations, in recent years, has resulted in the death of many unsuspecting victims. The present study was conducted to present a systematic review of the literature, focusing on the control of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), among human subjects. It also centered on a bioinformatics analysis of five different strains of Ebola virus.Research articles published between 2008 and 2018, on EVD control studies, were systematically reviewed. Four online databases were searched for the purpose of this review. These include: Science Direct, Google Scholar, SpringerLink and PubMed. Study outcomes were extracted. The outcomes were summarized and categorized. Five different strains of Ebola virus were obtained from the NCBI database, specifically the Entrez Genome database. Bioinformatics analysis was performed using Muscle software, RawXL, Treview, iTOL and Clustal X. Bioinformatics analysis was performed on five selected strains of Ebola virus (Reston, Bundingbugyo, Zaire, Sudan and Tai forest). Evaluation of the phylogenetic tree was performed by using MEGA X and PHYLIP software.237,498 publications were identified, out of which 104 research articles, from different regions of the world, fulfilled our inclusion criteria. Insight was gained for the control of EVD from these studies. Of the studies reviewed, 23 articles focused on vaccines/vaccination-related Ebola control research, 12 studies on modeling and simulation-related Ebola control research, 41 on drugs and therapeutics-related Ebola control research, and 28 focused on other experimental studies (such as biological experiments, bioinformatics experiments, travel border control measures, educational campaign measures, hand and environmental sanitization, amongst others). Very few modeling and simulation studies have been conducted on the control of EVD in the last 10 years. Thus, there is the need for more modeling and simulation-related ebola control research. Comparative computational genomics of the five Ebola virus strains produced phylogenetic trees in different shapes. An evaluation of the phylogenetic tree was performed. Results showed that Taiforest Ebola virus and Bundibugyo Ebola virus are closely related. The results also revealed that Sudan and Reston Ebola virus are closely related. Zaire Ebola virus stood out from all the others. It may be possible to adopt similar Ebola control measures against Ebola virus strains that are closely related.Insight from these results, can facilitate the development and production of multi-protective, multi-treatment drugs, multi-protective vaccines and antivirals, against these ebola virus disease strains.The results of the evaluations of the phylogenetic tree can be assistive in providing insight into the origin, evolution, and possible structural and genetic mutations of the Ebola virus. It can also provide insight for inferring the structural and functional properties of each Ebola virus. The knowledge of such inference can be useful for EVD control. Introduction: Clefts are common birth defects and may be associated with oro-facial congenital anomalies. It has not been established if specific types of anomalies are frequently related with clefts, or which organ is most commonly affected. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of associated anomalies in consecutive cleft lip and palate patients treated at two referral centres in Northern Nigeria. Methods: Cleft lip and palate at two referral hospitals in Northern Nigeria from January 2012 to December 2015 were studied. Data were analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 16. Results: A total of 811 cleft lip and palate patients were managed. Fifty-five percent (447) were male and 45% (364) were female while 71% (578) were children and 29% (233) were adults. The prevalence of associated anomalies was 11.5%. The most common associated anomaly among cleft patients was facial anomaly (64% of cleft patients). Associated anomalies were most prevalent in patients with isolated cleft palate. Hypertelorism was the commonest type of facial anomaly recorded. Conclusion: Our study showed a low incidence of associated anomalies with a higher incidence in isolated cleft palate cases.

While there are numerous benefits to working in teams comprising multiple disciplines, we do not have sufficient documented information on the functioning of multi-disciplinary teams in the building design context. As functioning impacts project outcomes, an understanding of the operation of building design teams comprising multiple disciplines is important. To contribute to the body of knowledge that addresses this gap, this paper examines literature on disciplinary types and team performance. Using an analytic framework identified in literature, this paper studies the organizational and social aspects of building design practice in order to shed light on the ways in which the multiple disciplines involved building design work together. Findings presented in this paper suggest that building design teams combine and integrate knowledge, skills and capabilities in a multidisciplinary manner. In addition, this paper discusses four social and organizational characteristics of multidisciplinary building design teams – the project delivery approach, disciplinary roles, preexisting social and professional relationships, and location and geographic proximity – and documents their impacts on team functioning.

This study explores the potential of converting food waste (FW) in South Africa to biogas via anaerobic digestion (AD) using the Aspen Plus Simulator version 11. The simulation modeled the AD process, focusing on hydrolysis, acidogenesis, acetogenesis, and methanogenesis stages, with unconverted substrate recycling at the acetogenesis stage, employing a Non-Random Two-Liquid (NRTL) model for the polar mixture components. The FW used contained 49.86 % volatile solids (VS) of carbohydrates, 39.31 % VS of proteins, and 10.83 % VS of lipids. The results revealed that biogas yield at mesophilic temperature (37 °C) was 50 % higher than at thermophilic temperature (55 °C) with a residence time of 35 days, and methane composition was 45.98 % higher. Methane and carbon dioxide percentage compositions increased with hydraulic retention time (HRT), varying between 37.5–45.5 % and 34.3–39.9 % at mesophilic conditions. Economic analysis indicated a profitable outlook, with a payout period of 3 years, 5 months, and a 15-year positive revenue forecast. The project exhibited an internal rate of return (IRR) of 59.6629 %, suggesting strong economic viability and potential for investment. This study underscores the potential for optimized AD processes to enhance biogas production from FW in South Africa, presenting a viable, eco-friendly waste management solution.

Traditional fermented food condiments in Nigeria are majorly produced by using protein-rich leguminous seeds via spontaneous fermentation or back slopping. However, health risks such as the production of biogenic amines, presence of toxigenic genes and food borne pathogens remains major concerns of public health significance. Hence, the need for the production of safe condiments using non-pathogenic food-grade starter cultures. Isolation and characterization of organisms from spontaneously fermented condiments made from Parkia biglobosa, Ricinus communis, Pentaclethra macrophylla and Prosopis africana was done using standard methods. Phenotypic and biochemical characterizations was down using established protocols while molecular identification was done using 16S rRNA sequencing. Results obtained showed that the microbial load (cfu/ml) recorded from the spontaneously fermented condiments ranged from: 2.1×107-5.2×1012, 15.2×107-4.4×1010, 4.4×1010-4.4×1012 and 6.4×107-1.6×1012 for P. biglobosa, R. communis, P. macrophylla and P. africana respectively. Identification of isolates revealed Bacillus. However, 22.8% of the Bacillus isolates harboured HblA and HblD genes while 40.9 % showed bands for the presence of HblC genes. In addition, the percentage occurrence of 18.1%, 27.2% and 50% was obtained for the presence of NheA, NheB and NheC genes respectively while none of the Bacillus isolates showed bands for the presence of Cytk and EM1 genes. More so, five Bacillus isolates were identified to be non-toxigenic, showing bands only for Bac, Osbo and Spas genes which are bacteriocin producing genes. Put together, the identified non-toxigenic food-grade Bacillus species recorded in this study can be recommended as potential bacteriocin starter cultures for the fermentation of microbiologically safe food products.

To investigate epidemiology of and risk factors for laboratory-confirmed mpox during the 2022 outbreak in Nigeria, we enrolled 265 persons with suspected mpox. A total of 163 (61.5%) were confirmed to have mpox; 137 (84.0%) were adults, 112 (68.7%) male, 143 (87.7%) urban/semi-urban dwellers, 12 (7.4%) self-reported gay men, and 3 (1.8%) female sex workers. Significant risk factors for adults were sexual and nonsexual contact with persons who had mpox, as well as risky sexual behavior. For children, risk factors were close contact with an mpox-positive person and prior animal exposure. Odds of being mpox positive were higher for adults with HIV and lower for those co-infected with varicella zoster virus (VZV). No children were HIV-seropositive; odds of being mpox positive were higher for children with VZV infection. Our findings indicate mpox affects primarily adults in Nigeria, partially driven by sexual activity; childhood cases were driven by close contact, animal exposure, and VZV co-infection.

Abstract Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings are gaining wider attraction due to their excellent mechanical and tribological properties. This research presents statistical models to predict the wear and friction coefficient of duplex CrN/DLC and nano-multilayer DLC-W coatings through analysis of variance (ANOVA). The coatings were deposited using a hybrid PVD/PECVD system onto carburized and quenched martensitic valve tappets. Tribological tests were conducted on the coatings in a ball-on-plane configuration using a reciprocating slide on an Optimol SRV® v4 device under dry conditions. ANOVA and regression analysis were employed to analyze the wear rate and coefficient of friction (COF), leading to the development of a prediction equation. The results indicated that both applied load and operating temperature had nearly equal influence on the COF and wear of the coatings. The reliability of the proposed statistical models was approximately 92–96% for duplex CrN/DLC and 90–97% for nano-multilayer DLC-W. These models are applicable only to the tested parameters within the deformation region. They can be used to predict the tribological operating conditions for the duplex CrN/DLC and nano-multilayer DLC-W coatings, helping to prevent premature failure.

Against the backdrop of the warnings by some previous studies about the danger of the Yorùbá language losing domains because of the increasing dominance of English, the present study examines the broadcast languages of selected radio stations in Osun State, Nigeria, to ascertain the extent of the threat of English to Yorùbá in broadcast media domain. The investigation is carried out within the wider context of the worries being expressed by many speakers of Yorùbá about the status of the language with respect to language endangerment. It employs both quantitative and qualitative research designs rooted in content analysis, and examines 426 purposively sampled programmes of Rave FM and Gold FM. The programmes were sorted and content-analysed using charts. Of the 12 examined programme categories, English is the dominant language of 9 most important programmes, while Yorùbá is the dominant language of 3 programmes; thereby pointing to a gradual loss of the radio broadcast domain. The study recommends more value-added usage of the Yorùbá language in media domains to improve the language's vitality and inclusive audience participation.

The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of measles virus in children (aged 0–8 months) and older children (aged 9–23 months) presenting with measles-like symptoms. Methods: A total of 273 blood samples comprising 200 from children aged 0–8 months and 73 from children aged 9–23 months were collected and analyzed for measles virus IgM antibodies by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: An overall prevalence of 21.2% was obtained, with a prevalence of 6.5% in children aged 0–8 months and 61.6% in children aged 9–23 months. The prevalence of measles virus increased with age in children aged 0–8 months and decreased with age in older children (aged 9–23 months), showing a significant association between measles virus and age of the child (P=0.000). A higher prevalence was found in females (27.5%) than in males (16.3%) and this difference was significant (odds ratio 1.942, P=0.025). There was no significant association with the level of parental education, parental occupation, or number of children in the family (P>0.05). With respect to children's vaccination status and breastfeeding, there was a significant association (P0.05). Conclusion: The findings of this study confirm the presence of measles virus infection in children aged 0–8 months. Keywords: measles virus, malaria, vaccination, breastfeeding

Most women present with advanced disease, mainly because the nonspecific nature of the symptoms lead to diagnostic delays. Recent data have shown a fall in ovarian cancer mortality rates in the UK, but rates are still higher when compared to other European countries or the USA. In addition, surgeons in the UK achieve on average lower optimal surgical cytoreduction rates in patients with advanced ovarian cancer. Despite a wealth of information on epidemiological risk factors, the pathogenesis of epithelial ovarian cancer remains largely unknown. This review presents the most recent data on incidence, mortality, and survival for epithelial ovarian cancer in the UK. Time trends, trends by age, international comparisons, and regional variation in incidence, survival, and mortality are presented within the context of a major reorganization of cancer services that took place in the UK over 10 years ago. The focus of this study is to propose statistical models for predicting wear and coefficient of friction of the 16MnCr5 steel valve tappet using the analysis of variance (ANOVA). The 16MnCr5 steel valve tappet was fabricated from a steel strip and thermochemically treated by carburizing, quenching, and tempering. Under dry conditions, tribological tests were performed for 16MnCr5 steel valve tappet with a ball-on-plane configuration in a reciprocating slide using an Optimol SRV® v4 device. Subsequently, the results of the coefficient of friction (COF) and the wear rate were then analyzed using the ANOVA. Regression analysis was used to derive the predictive equations for both friction coefficient and wear rate. The applied load was found to be the most significant parameter affecting the COF and wear rate. The proposed statistical models has 88 - 92% percent reliability. These models can be beneficial for predicting the tribological operating conditions for the 16MnCr5 steel valve tappet to avoid premature failure within the tested load and temperature conditions.

This study investigated the help-seeking attitude of undergraduates at the University of Ilorin Nigeria toward mental health issues. The study employed a descriptive survey design. A multistage sampling method was used in selecting a total of 400 participants. The demographic data and research questions were examined using percentage distribution. The hypotheses were tested using t-tests and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) statistical methods at a significance level of 0. 05. The help-seeking attitude of respondents towards mental health difficulties did not vary significantly based on gender. However, there were substantial differences depending on age, degree of study, and students' place of residence. The vast majority of undergraduates rather talk to friends and family about their mental health problems than seek psychotherapy or medical help. School counsellors need to educate students on the significance of seeking help from trained mental health professionals.

Accurate species identification of the mosquitoes in the genus Anopheles is of crucial importance to implement malaria control measures and monitor their effectiveness. We use a previously developed amplicon panel (ANOSPP) that retrieves sequence data from multiple short nuclear loci for any species in the genus. Species assignment is based on comparison of samples to a reference index using k-mer distance. Here, we provide a protocol to generate version controlled updates of the reference index and present its latest release, NNv2, which contains 91 species, compared to 56 species represented in its predecessor NNv1. With the updated reference index, we are able to assign samples to species level that previously could not be assigned. We discuss what happens if a species is not represented in the reference index and how this can be addressed in a future update. To demonstrate the increased power of NNv2, we showcase the assignments of 1789 wild-caught mosquitoes from Madagascar and demonstrate that we can detect within species population structure from the amplicon sequencing data.

The acceleration of the energy transition away from traditional energy systems depends on the inclusion of H2in energy plans. Using biomass to produce hydrogen energy holds significant promise in the field of renewable energy. This article explores the history of biomass as a sustainable energy source and highlights the important role of hydrogen energy. Various biomass hydrogen conversion technologies, including thermochemical, biological, electrochemical, and hybrid processes, are discussed and compared to other renewable energy sources. Given hydrogen energy inclusion into the energy mix, comparisons are made between methods of biomass-to-hydrogen conversion in terms of cost per kg of H2, power consumption in kWh as well as feedstocks utilized for hydrogen production, and their strengths and weaknesses. Case study applications of these conversion methodologies are highlighted and their strengths as well as limitations are addressed in the course of discussion. This article provides an in-depth look at the prospects and challenges of biomass hydrogen production, providing a review of the research literature, insights into efficiency improvements, level of advancement technology, and catalyst development. The role of catalysts, machine learning, and artificial intelligence along with other factors for improving hydrogen production were discussed. Challenges such as food supply, techno-economic constraints, environmental impact, and energy consumption have all been examined. The article concludes by highlighting current applications, prospects, and the overall importance of biomass hydrogen in transportation, business processes, and policy changes.

Objectives: To enhance the utilization of reclaimed land, Sanyeqing (SYQ) has been extensively cultivated in Zhejiang province, China. However, the prevalence of anthracnose has significantly hindered SYQ growth, emerging as a primary obstacle to its production. This study aimed to elucidate SYQ's responses to anthracnose in reclaimed land environments by comprehensively analyzing root-zone bacterial community structure, metabolites, and soil properties. Methods: The experiment was conducted on reclaimed land in Chun'an, China. In order to evaluate the responses of SYQ to anthracnose, the fresh and dry weight of SYQ tubes, the soil properties, the high-throughput sequencing, and metabolomics assay were carried out. Results: Significant differences were observed between an anthracnose-resistant variety (A201714) and an anthracnose-susceptibile variety (B201301). Fresh and dry weight increased 131.53 % and 144.82 % for A201714 compared to B201301.Lacibacterium (39.85 %), Gp6 (21.83 %), Gp5 (21.49 %), and Sphingomonas (18.84 %) were more prevalent, whereas Gp3 (22.71 %), WPS-1 (18.88 %), Gp4 (15.60 %), Subdivision3 (14.70 %), Chryseolinea (14.37 %), and Nitrospira (0.76 %) were less prevalent in A201714 than B201301. A total of 24 bacterial biomarkers were detected in all soil samples, while the network suggests a more stable soil bacterial community in A201714 than in B201301. Eight differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) that belonged to lipids and lipid-like molecules, organic acids and derivatives, benzenoids, nucleosides, nucleotides, and analogues were found between two soil samples, and all these eight DEMs were downregulated in A201714 and had a strong correlation with 12 genera of bacteria. Moreover, the data from the redundancy analysis indicated that the main variables affecting changes in the bacterial communities were pH, available phosphorus (AP), available potassium (AK), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), and microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN). Conclusion: This research offers new insights into the SYQ response to anthracnose in reclaimed land and provides valuable recommendations for the high-quality SYQ cultivation and production.

Background Adequate eHealth literacy and health promotion behavior (HPB) are important to achieve good health-related quality of life. There is limited information on the influence of eHealth literacy and HPB on body mass index (BMI) in our setting and among public service workers. Objectives This study assessed the eHealth literacy, HPB, and BMI of public service workers and determined the influence of eHealth literacy and HPB on BMI. Design A descriptive cross-sectional design was adopted. Methods A simple random sampling technique was used to select 440 public service workers from civil service of redacted . A structured questionnaire was used to collect data on socio-demographics, eHealth literacy, and HPB. Weight and height were measured and BMI was calculated. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and logistic regression analysis. The significant level was set at 0.05. Results More than one quarter (28.2%) of respondents had low eHealth literacy, and more than one third (42.5%) had inadequate (30.0% fair and 12.5% poor) HPB. An average (50.5%) had a level of obesity that ranged from preobesity to type 2 obesity. There was a significant association between eHealth literacy and HPB with the BMI of respondents at p
