Research Finding: Traditional fathering programs have missed an opportunity to reflect the unique family patterns and service needs of Hispanic and Latino fathers. In addition, family engagement strategies in early childhood programs have typically focused on mothers. The aim of this study was to adapt, implement, and evaluate a 6-week video coaching program, Filmando Interacciones para Nutrir el Desarrollo (FIND[subscript FM]; Filming Interactions to Nurture Development) with Mexican American fathers and their young children (n= 33). FIND[subscript FM] was delivered through home visits, promoted warm and responsive father-child interactions, and used video to emphasize each father's parenting strengths in the context of everyday caretaking moments. Utilizing a randomized waitlist control design, we found that fathers who received FIND[subscript FM] had higher levels of encouragement, lower levels of parenting stress, higher levels of identity dedicated to the fathering role, and reported lower levels of children's behavior problems at posttest relative to the control group. Further, there was a moderately strong relationship between increases in fathers' encouragement and reported decreases in children's behavior problems, which supports a central pathway in FIND[subscript FM]'s theory of change. Practice or Policy: FIND[subscript FM] offers a promising approach to leverage existing early childhood home visiting services to better meet Mexican American fathers' needs.

Objective Parent behavior management training (BMT) is an evidence-based yet underutilized tool to treat children with ADHD and address related health disparities. This pilot study investigated the acceptability and feasibility of a novel, health behavior-, and technology-adapted BMT (LEAP) vs. standard BMT. Methods The weekly 9-session LEAP telemedicine group program is based on a standard BMT curriculum enhanced with strategies for supporting optimal child sleep, problematic media use (PMU), and physical activity, including wrist-worn activity trackers. Children ages 6–10 years with ADHD and their caregivers were randomized to LEAP or standard BMT. Acceptability and feasibility were tracked. Caregivers completed standardized measures, and children wore hip-worn accelerometers for 1 week at baseline, postintervention (10 weeks), and follow-up (20 weeks). Results 84 parent/child dyads were randomized to LEAP or standard BMT, with high and comparable acceptability and feasibility. Both treatment groups demonstrated decreased ADHD symptoms and improved executive functions postintervention (p  < .0001), maintained at follow-up. Average accelerometer-measured MVPA decreased and sleep duration remained unchanged, while PMU and bedtime resistance improved for both groups. Conclusions LEAP is highly feasible and acceptable, and yielded similar initial clinical and health behavior improvements to standard BMT. Objective : Positional plagiocephaly and/or brachycephaly (PPB) is associated with cognition, motor, and other developmental outcomes, but little is known about the social-behavioral adjustment of children with PPB. The primary aim of this study was to compare the social-behavioral development of preschool and school-age children with and without PPB and to examine the potential moderating effects of PPB severity on group differences. Design : Two hundred twenty children with a history of PPB and 164 controls participated in at least one behavioral assessment at 4-11 months, 18 months, 36 months, and 7 years. The frequencies of observed problem behaviors and social competence were estimated using the Child Behavior Checklist Ages 1.5-5 (CBCL/1.5-5), Caregiver-Teacher Report Form(C-TRF), CBCL/6-18, and Teacher Report Form. Results : Children with PPB were similar to controls on the internalizing, externalizing, or total problems composites. At 7 years, CBCL/6-18 total competence scores were significantly lower in children with histories of PPB than controls. In analyses stratified by PPB severity, we found that children with moderate/severe PPB had slightly higher scores on the C-TRF internalizing scale at 36 months and lower total competence scores at age 7 years. Children who had a history of mild PPB were similar to controls on all outcomes. Conclusions : This study is the first to examine social and behavioral outcomes in a large cohort of children with and without a history of PPB. We found limited evidence of an association between PPB and parent and teacher-reported social-emotional and behavioral adjustment through early school-age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction Children with positional plagiocephaly and/or brachycephaly (PPB) are at risk of early developmental delay, but little is known about early life factors associated with school-age neurodevelopment. This study examined associations of demographic characteristics, prenatal risk factors and early neurodevelopment assessment with school-age IQ, academic performance, and motor development in children with PPB. Methods The study sample consisted of 235 school-age children with PPB followed since infancy. Outcome measures included IQ using the Differential Ability Scales-Second Edition, academic achievement as measured by the Wechsler Individualized Achievement Tests-Third Edition), and motor function using the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency, Second Edition. Linear regression was used to examine the incremental improvement of model fit of demographics, prenatal and early life characteristics, severity of PPB, and neurodevelopment at ages 7, 18, and 36 months as measured by the Bayley-3 on school-age scores. Results Mean age at school-age assessment was 9.0 years. Adjusted r2 for demographic, prenatal, and early life risk factors ranged from 0.10 to 0.22. Addition of PPB severity and Bayley-3 measures at ages 7 and 18 months did not meaningfully change model fit. Adjusted r2 after inclusion of Bayley-3 at 36 months ranged from 0.35 to 0.41. Conclusion This study suggests that PPB severity and very early life neurodevelopment have little association with school-age neurodevelopment above and beyond demographic and early life risk factors. However, preschool-age neurodevelopmental assessment may still be useful in identifying children with PPB at risk for delay and who may benefit from early intervention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A large body of research has established a relation between maternal education and children's neurocognitive functions, such as executive function and language. However, most studies have focused on early childhood and relatively few studies have examined associations with changes in maternal education over time. Consequently, it remains unclear if early maternal education is longitudinally related to neurocognitive functions in children, adolescents, and young adults. In addition, the associations between changes in maternal education across development and more broadly defined neurocognitive outcomes remain relatively untested. The current study leveraged a large multicohort sample to examine the longitudinal relations between perinatal maternal education and changes in maternal education during development with children's, adolescents', and young adults' neurocognitive functions (N = 2,688; Mage = 10.32 years; SDage = 4.26; range = 3–20 years). Moreover, we examined the differential effects of perinatal maternal education and changes in maternal education across development on executive function and language performance. Perinatal maternal education was positively associated with children's later overall neurocognitive function. This longitudinal relation was stronger for language than executive function. In addition, increases in maternal education were related to improved language performance but were not associated with executive functioning performance. Our findings support perinatal maternal education as an important predictor of neurocognitive outcomes later in development. Moreover, our results suggest that examining how maternal education changes across development can provide important insights that can help inform policies and interventions designed to foster neurocognitive development.
