The original and translated version of BNSS has thus far been shown to have adequate psychometric properties. This study aimed to examine internal consistency, inter-rater and test-retest reliability, discriminant and convergent validity, and factor structure of the Japanese version of BNSS.Patients and methods: The assessment was performed by 11 raters using interview videos of nine subjects. Reliability was calculated with Cronbach’s alpha for internal consistency and intra class correlation coefficient (ICC) for inter-rater reliability. Pearson’s correlation coefficients were calculated to estimate the test-retest reliability. In addition to BNSS, Scale for assessment of negative symptoms (SANS) and scale for assessment of positive symptoms (SAPS) was obtained to assess the convergent and discriminant validity. Perception of biological motion (BM) is a higher-level visual process, and is known to be associated with social cognition. BM induces activation in the “social brain network”, including the superior temporal sulcus (STS). Although deficits in the detection of BM and atypical activation in the STS have been reported in patients with schizophrenia, it remains unclear whether other nodes of the “social brain network” are also atypical in patients with schizophrenia.Purpose: We aimed to explore whether brain regions other than STS were involved during BM perception in patients with schizophrenia, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).Methods and patients: Seventeen patients with schizophrenia, and 17 age- and sex- matched healthy controls, underwent fMRI scanning during a one-back visual task, containing three experimental conditions: (1) BM, (2) scrambled motion (SM), and (3) static condition. We used one-sample t-tests to examine neural responses selective to BM versus SM within each group, and two-sample t-tests to directly compare neural patterns to BM versus SM in schizophrenics versus controls.Results: We found significant activation in the STS region when BM was contrasted with SM in both groups, with no significant difference between groups. On the contrary, significant activation in the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) and bilateral temporoparietal junction (TPJ) was found only in the control group. When we directly compared the two groups, the healthy controls showed significant greater activation in left MPFC and TPJ to BM versus SM than patients with schizophrenia. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that patients with schizophrenia show normal activation to biologically and socially relevant motion stimuli in the STS, but atypical activation in other regions of the social brain network, specifically MPFC and TPJ. Moreover, these results were not due to atypical processing of motion, suggesting that patients with schizophrenia lack in the recruitment of neural circuits needed for the visual perception of social cognition. Abstract

Photosensitive gaseous detectors with a simple photoelectron multiplication mechanism of resistive plate chambers (RPCs) are expected to have both a large photocoverage and an excellent time resolution and to be low-cost. To demonstrate the time resolution of the RPC-based photodetectors, we built a prototype detector with a LaB$_6$ photocathode. Abstract

We present a measurement of the branching fraction and longitudinal polarization of $B^0 \to \rho^+ \rho^-$ decays. SuperKEKB electron-positron collision data corresponding to 189~fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity and containing $198 \times 10^6 B\bar{B}$ pairs collected with the Belle II detector are used. We obtain \begin{eqnarray*} \mathcal{B}(B^0\to\rho^+\rho^-) &=& [2.67\pm0.28\,(\mathrm{stat})\,\pm0.28\,(\mathrm{syst})] \times 10^{-5}, \end{eqnarray*} \begin{eqnarray*} f_L &=& 0.956\pm0.035\,(\mathrm{stat})\,\pm 0.033\,(\mathrm{syst}), \end{eqnarray*} These results are consistent with previous measurements and can be used to constrain penguin pollution and to extract the quark-mixing angle $\phi_2$.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the branching fraction and longitudinal polarization of $B^0 \to ρ^+ ρ^-$ decays. SuperKEKB electron-positron collision data corresponding to 189~fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity and containing $198 \times 10^6 B\bar{B}$ pairs collected with the Belle II detector are used. We obtain \begin{eqnarray*} \mathcal{B}(B^0\toρ^+ρ^-) &=& [2.67\pm0.28\,(\mathrm{stat})\,\pm0.28\,(\mathrm{syst})] \times 10^{-5}, \end{eqnarray*} \begin{eqnarray*} f_L &=& 0.956\pm0.035\,(\mathrm{stat})\,\pm 0.033\,(\mathrm{syst}), \end{eqnarray*} These results are consistent with previous measurements and can be used to constrain penguin pollution and to extract the quark-mixing angle $ϕ_2$.

Abstract

Introduction: Fat plays an important role in brain function; 60% of the brain's dry weight is fat. Among fats, omega-3 fatty acids, which are long-chain fatty acids, have been reported to reduce depressive symptoms. On the other hand, there are few studies on short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and those that do exist are mostly animal studies, with only a few human studies (about 100 cases). This is the first study to examine the association between fecal short-chain fatty acids and depressive symptoms on a large scale in the general population. Objectives: We examined the association of fecal SCFAs with depressive symptoms. In addition, we analyzed the associations stratified by age and examined differences in the associations. Methods: This study was conducted using data from the Dynamics of Lifestyle and Neighborhood Community on Health Study (DOSANCO Health Study). The target population was all residents of the city of Suttu, Hokkaido, Japan, excluding residents of special nursing homes (n=2638). 579 individuals (22% of the target population) aged 18 years and older who were able to measure fecal SCFA participated in this study with written informed consent. Approval was obtained from the Ethics Committee of Hokkaido University School of Medicine (15-002 and 15-045). Fecal SCFA was measured by high-performance liquid chromatography. We examined the association of fecal concentrations of SCFA subtypes (i.e., acetate, butyrate, and propionate) and total SCFA concentrations (mg/g wet weight as a continuous variable) with total Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) scores using multiple regression analysis. We adjusted for age, sex, habitual exercise, total energy intake, and total dietary fiber intake. We performed additional multiple regression analyses with stratification by age group (18-59 years and 60 years or older). Two-tailed tests were used for all analyses with a significance level of P < 0.05. Results: The mean age (standard deviation) of the study participants (n=534) was 58.3 (16.0) years. Among them, 48% were 18-59 years old and 54% were female. Fecal propionate concentration was significantly associated with total PHQ-9 score (beta=0.62, p<0.01). Other SCFAs and total SCFA were not significantly associated with total PHQ-9 score. In addition, using stratification analyses by age group, the associations between fecal propionate concentration and total PHQ-9 score showed a different trend by age group (beta=0.18, p=0.62 for 18-59 years; beta=0.80, p<0.01 for 60 years or older). Conclusions: The study showed an association between higher concentrations of fecal propionic acid and higher levels of depressive symptoms. The association was particularly pronounced in older people, those aged 60 years and older. The results suggest that improving dietary habits to reduce fecal propionic acid may be effective in preventing depression in the elderly. Disclosure of Interest: R. Abstract

Dystrophin is associated with several novel sarcolemmal proteins, including a laminin-binding extracellular glycoprotein of 156 kD (alpha-dystroglycan) and a transmembrane glycoprotein of 50 kD (adhalin). Deficiency of adhalin characterizes a severe autosomal recessive muscular dystrophy prevalent in Arabs. Here we report for the first time two mongoloid (Japanese) patients with autosomal recessive muscular dystrophy deficient in adhalin. Interestingly, adhalin was not completely absent and was faintly detectable in a patchy distribution along the sarcolemma in our patients. Although the M and B2 subunits of laminin were preserved, the B1 subunit was greatly reduced in the basal lamina surrounding muscle fibers. Our results raise a possibility that the deficiency of adhalin may be associated with the disturbance of sarcolemma-extracellular matrix interaction leading to sarcolemmal instability.

Abstract

We have studied the Pr- and La-doping effects on the magnetic anisotropy in the antiferro-magnetic (AFM) phase of CeRu2Al10. The crystalline electric field (CEF) splitting in PrRu2Al10 was found to be as large as ~800 K with a singlet ground state. In Ce1-xPrxRu2Al10, the CEF level scheme of the Pr ion is not changed with x. The AFM moment (mAF) is rotated from c to b axis in both systems at xsrc ~ 0.03 and ~0.07 for Ln=Pr and La, respectively. As the ionic radius of La and Pr is larger and smaller than that of Ce, respectively, these results indicate that the chemical pressure effect is not associated with the rotation of mAF, but is caused by the suppression of the c-f hybridization originating from the decrease of 4f electrons of Ce ions by Ce-site substitution. Since a small amount of Pr or La doping changes easily the magnetization easy axis of all the moments on Ce sites, the origin of the magnetic anisotropy is not the local single ion effect but the bandlike effect through the anisotropic c-f hybridization. The magnetic phase diagrams of Ce1-xLnxRu2Al10 indicate that above xsrc, the AFM order with mAF ∥ b continues to exist up to xc, which is ~0.4 and ~0.6 in Ln=Pr and Ln=La, respectively. This indicates that even in the sample with an AFM transition temperature (T0) near xc, the anisotropic c-f hybridization dominates the AFM order. A large positive transverse magnetoresistance is seen below T0, but a very small one above T0. Together with the results of Hall resistivity and the observation of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillation, we propose that there exist large Fermi surfaces above T0 and small ones below T0. A gap is opened by the AFM order on almost the area of the large Fermi surface, and small Fermi surfaces are constructed below T0, although we do not know the mechanism, which might be specific to the AFM order in Kondo semiconductors. The largest suppression of the magnetic scattering below T0 is observed for the current I ∥ a and the smallest one for I ∥ b. This anisotropy may be associated with the anisotropic c-f hybridization, which may contribute to the anisotropic magnetic scattering of the conduction electron below T0. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We assessed and compared the effects of swimming, jumping, and vibration therapies on the prevention of bone loss because of unloading. Eighty Wistar rats were randomly divided into eight groups: S, permanent hind limb-suspended rats; CON, control rats; S + Swim, unloading interrupted by swimming exercise; S + CSwim, suspension interrupted by regular weight-bearing with the same duration as in the S + Swim protocol; S + Jump, unloading interrupted by jumping exercise; S + CJump, suspension interrupted for regular weight-bearing as in the S + Jump group; S + Vibr, unloading interrupted by vibration; and S + CVibr, suspension with interruptions for regular weight-bearing with the same protocol as that used for the S + Vibr rats. At the end of the experiment, the bone mineral density, bone strength, histomorphometric parameters, and serum levels of the bone markers were analyzed. The hind limb-suspended rats exhibited bone quality loss. In contrast, the trained rats showed a significant increase in bone mass, bone strength, bone formation, and serum levels of bone markers compared with the respective controls. Although we did not find a significant difference among the three physical exercises, the osteogenic effect of vibration was slightly lower than that of swimming and jumping. Abstract

We report on a measurement of entanglement in the time domain. The entanglement is examined by the Duan-Simon criteria. We obtained Duan-Simon criteria of Δ2(x1-x2)+Δ2(p1+p2) = 1.4<2 without optimal gain and Δ2(x1-x2)+Δ2(p1+p2) = 1.2<2 with optimal gain, respectively. Abstract

There is no unique way to encode a quantum algorithm into a quantum circuit. With limited qubit counts, connectivities, and coherence times, circuit optimization is essential to make the best use of quantum devices produced over a next decade. We introduce two separate ideas for circuit optimization and combine them in a multi-tiered quantum circuit optimization protocol called AQCEL. The first ingredient is a technique to recognize repeated patterns of quantum gates, opening up the possibility of future hardware optimization. The second ingredient is an approach to reduce circuit complexity by identifying zero- or low-amplitude computational basis states and redundant gates. As a demonstration, AQCEL is deployed on an iterative and effcient quantum algorithm designed to model final state radiation in high energy physics. For this algorithm, our optimization scheme brings a significant reduction in the gate count without losing any accuracy compared to the original circuit. Additionally, we have investigated whether this can be demonstrated on a quantum computer using polynomial resources. Our technique is generic and can be useful for a wide variety of quantum algorithms.
