Background: Potassium bromate (KBrO3) has been reported to be toxic, adversely affecting many body tissues and organs. The aim of this study was to determine the blood coagulation effect of Parkia biglobosa (P. biglobosa) seed on potassium bromate induced coagulopathy., Methodology: P. biglobosa was extracted with soxhlet extractor with ethanol as the solvent. Twenty-four adult male Wistar rats were acclimatized under laboratory conditions and were randomly grouped into A, B, C and D. Group A was given distilled water orally. Animals in groups B, C and D were administered 100 mg/kg body weight of potassium bromate, but groups C and D were also treated with 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight of P. biglobosa respectively. Both potassium bromate and P. biglobosa were freshly prepared on daily basis and administered to rats by oral gavage for 28 days. At the end of the treatment period, blood samples were collected in sodium citrate bottles and were used for analysis of Prothrombin Time (PT), Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT), Thrombin Time (TT), fibrinogen and vitamin K levels using standard methods., Results: Administration of potassium bromate increased Prothrombin Time (PT) from 11.67±2.15 seconds (in control animals) to 19.53±2.83 seconds. Treatment with 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight of P. biglobosa seed extract neutralized this effect in a dose-dependent manner. Likewise, KBrO 3 was observed to have significantly elevated Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT) from 29.67±3.93 to 41.10±4.79 seconds and Thrombin Time (TT) from 15.36±2.06 to 25.43±2.83 seconds when compared with those in the control group. The result further showed that exposure of animals to KBrO3 significantly declined the levels of fibrinogen (from 4.05±0.72 to 2.59±0.30 g/dL) and vitamin K (from 3.18±0.73 to 1.84±0.18 ng/mL) when compared with the untreated animals. The effect of KBrO 3 on PT, APTT, TT, Fibrinogen and vitamin k were attenuated by P. biglobosa in a dose-dependent manner., Conclusion: The results of this investigation demonstrated that potassium bromate caused prolongation of PT, aPTT and TT and decreased levels of fibrinogen and vitamin K, but P. biglobosa treatment counteracted these effects. Background: Hemoglobin polymerization in sickle cell anemia (SCA) leads to abnormally rigid and adhesive erythrocytes that obstruct blood vessels, leading to poor tissue perfusion, hence provoking inflammation and damage of surrounding tissues. Adiponectin, a protein hormone, presumptively has anti-inflammatory characteristics, hence may be an important therapeutic target in SCA. Aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate the status of adiponectin and its correlation with disease severity in SCA. Patients and Methods: A total of 84 subjects were recruited for the study comprising 34 homozygous sickle cell (HbSS) subjects (25 in the steady state and nine in the resolving crisis state) and 50 controls (25 heterozygous sickle cell [HbAS] and 25 hemoglobin phenotype AA subjects). The hemoglobin phenotype, adiponectin levels, and full blood counts were evaluated. Anthropometric measurements were also conducted. Results: A significant difference was observed in the mean body mass index between the different hemoglobin phenotype groups and also between the SCA in crisis resolution patients and the control group ( p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the median serum levels of adiponectin in the different hemoglobin phenotype groups and between SCA patients in the steady state compared with those in the crisis resolution state. Also, there was no correlation between disease severity and adiponectin in SCA patients in the steady state ( p = 0.87). Conclusion: Our study seems to suggest that in our data set of sickle cell anemia patients in the steady state, adiponectin does not constitute part of the endocrinopathy that affects these patients., Competing Interests: The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest. Purpose: Determining chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) prognosis using the International Prognostic Index markers such as TP53 and immunoglobulin heavy-chain variable region gene mutation in a resource-limited setting is difficult to achieve because of cost and equipment unavailability. The aim of this study is to determine prognostic factors easily available to hematologists in low- or medium-income countries., Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective study conducted at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Nigeria. Data were retrieved from CLL patient records from January 2004 to December 2019 (15 years). Data collected were analyzed using SPSS software version 25., Results: A total of 46 records were reviewed, with a median age of 55 years and a male:female ratio of 1:1.2. All patients were symptomatic at presentation, with splenomegaly (91.3%), anemia (82.6%), and lymphadenopathy (76.1%) predominating. About 89.1% of the patients presented at Binet stage C and/or high-risk Rai (Rai stages III and IV) with 10.9% presenting at Binet stage B and/or intermediate-risk Rai (Rai stage II). Only 13% of the patients had immunophenotyping done with 6.5% being done for the Matutes CLL score. The 5-year overall survival (OS) was 15.7% with a median survival of 26 months. WBC count and absolute lymphocyte count (ALC) > 100 × 10 9 /L were significant poor prognostic markers ( P = .013 and .021, respectively). Thirty-five (76.1%) received chemotherapy, and they had a better median survival than those who did not (26 v 17.5 months). The most common regimen used was cyclophosphamide, vincristine, and prednisolone for 15 (42.9%) patients., Conclusion: WBC count and ALC > 100 × 10 9 /L were poor prognostic markers. Patients who received chemotherapy had a better OS.
