The breaking of time-reversal symmetry (TRS) in the normal state of kagome superconductors $A$V$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ stands out as a significant feature. Yet the extent to which this effect can be tuned remains uncertain, a crucial aspect to grasp in light of the varying details of TRS breaking observed through different techniques. Here, we employ the unique low-energy muon spin rotation technique combined with local field numerical analysis to study the TRS breaking response as a function of depth from the surface in single crystals of RbV$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ with charge order and Cs(V$_{0.86}$Ta$_{0.14}$)$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ without charge order. In the bulk (i.e., > 33 nm from the surface) of RbV$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$, we have detected a notable increase in the internal magnetic field width experienced by the muon ensemble. This increase occurs only within the charge ordered state. Intriguingly, the muon spin relaxation rate is significantly enhanced near the surface (i.e., < 33 nm from the surface) of RbV$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$, and this effect commences at temperatures significantly higher than the onset of charge order. Conversely, in Cs(V$_{0.86}$Ta$_{0.14}$)$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$, we do not observe a similar enhancement in the internal field width, neither in the bulk nor near the surface. These observations indicate a strong connection between charge order and TRS breaking on one hand, and on the other hand, suggest that TRS breaking can occur prior to long-range charge order. This research offers compelling evidence for depth-dependent magnetism in $A$V$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ superconductors in the presence of charge order. Such findings are likely to elucidate the intricate microscopic mechanisms that underpin the TRS breaking phenomena in these materials., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures

Lattice and electronic states of thin FeSe films on LaAlO$_3$ substrates are investigated in the vicinity of the nematic phase transition. No evidence of structural phase transition is found by x-ray diffraction below $T^\ast \sim 90$ K, while results obtained from resistivity measurement and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy clearly show the appearance of a nematic state. These results indicate formation of a pure nematic state in the iron-based superconductor and provide conclusive evidence that the nematic state originates from the electronic degrees of freedom. This pure nematicity in the thin film implies difference in the electron-lattice interaction from bulk FeSe crystals. FeSe films provide valuable playgrounds for observing the pure response of "bare" electron systems free from the electron-lattice interaction, and should make important contribution to investigate nematicity and its relationship with superconductivity.

We investigate the nonequilibrium electronic structure of 1T-TaS2 by time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We observe that strong photoexcitation induces the collapse of the Mott gap, leading to the photo-induced metallic phase. It is also found that the oscillation of photoemission intensity occurs as a result of the excitations of coherent phonons corresponding to the amplitude mode of the charge density wave (CDW). To study the dynamical change of the band dispersions modulated by the CDW amplitude mode, we perform analyses by using frequency-domain angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (FDARPES). We find that two different peak structures exhibit anti-phase oscillation with respect to each other by retrieving the amplitude and phase parts of the FDARPES spectra. They are attributed to the minimum and maximum band positions in energy, where the single band is oscillating between them synchronizing with the CDW amplitude mode. We further find that the flat band constructed as a result of CDW band folding survives during the oscillation while the Mott gap is significantly reduced. Our results suggest the CDW phase is robust, and the lattice modulation corresponding to the CDW amplitude mode dynamically modulates the Mott gap., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Solids with competing interactions often undergo complex phase transitions with a variety of long-periodic modulations. Among such transition, devil's staircase is the most complex phenomenon, and for it, CeSb is the most famous material, where a number of the distinct phases with long-periodic magnetostructures sequentially appear below the Neel temperature. An evolution of the low-energy electronic structure going through the devil's staircase is of special interest, which has, however, been elusive so far despite the 40-years of intense researches. Here we use bulk-sensitive angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and reveal the devil's staircase transition of the electronic structures. The magnetic reconstruction dramatically alters the band dispersions at each transition. We moreover find that the well-defined band picture largely collapses around the Fermi energy under the long-periodic modulation of the transitional phase, while it recovers at the transition into the lowest-temperature ground state. Our data provide the first direct evidence for a significant reorganization of the electronic structures and spectral functions occurring during the devil's staircase., Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures

Multi-layered materials provide fascinating platforms to realize various functional properties, possibly leading to future electronic devices controlled by external fields. In particular, layered magnets coupled with conducting layers have been extensively studied recently for possible control of their transport properties via the spin structure. Successful control of quantum-transport properties in the materials with antiferromagnetic (AFM) layers, so-called natural spin-valve structure, has been reported for the Dirac Fermion and topological/axion materials. However, a bulk crystal in which magnetic and superconducting layers are alternately stacked has not been realized until now, and the search for functional properties in it is an interesting yet unexplored field in material science. Here, we discover superconductivity providing such an ideal platform in EuSn2As2 with the van der Waals stacking of magnetic Eu layers and superconducting Sn-As layers, and present the first demonstration of a natural spin-valve effect on the superconducting current. Below the superconducting transition temperature (Tc), the electrical resistivity becomes zero in the in-plane direction. In contrast, it, surprisingly, remains finite down to the lowest temperature in the out-of-plane direction, mostly due to the structure of intrinsic magnetic Josephson junctions in EuSn2As2. The magnetic order of the Eu layers (or natural spin-valve) is observed to be extremely soft, allowing one to easy control of the out-of-plane to in-plane resistivities ratio from 1 to infinity by weak external magnetic fields. The concept of multi-functional materials with stacked magnetic-superconducting layers will open a new pathway to develop novel spintronic devices with magnetically controllable superconductivity., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

The isovalent-substituted iron pnictide compound SrFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ exhibits multiple evidence for nodal superconductivity via various experimental probes, such as the penetration depth, nuclear magnetic resonance and specific heat measurements. The direct identification of the nodal superconducting (SC) gap structure is challenging, partly because the presence of nodes is not protected by symmetry but instead caused by an accidental sign change of the order parameter, and also because of the three-dimensionality of the electronic structure. We have studied the SC gaps of SrFe$_{2}$(As$_{0.65}$P$_{0.35}$)$_{2}$ in three-dimensional momentum space by synchrotron and laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The three hole Fermi surfaces (FSs) at the zone center have SC gaps with different magnitudes, whereas the SC gaps of the electron FSs at the zone corner are almost isotropic and $k_{z}$-independent. We propose that the SC gap of the outer hole FS changes sign around the Z-X [($0, 0, 2\pi$)-($\pi,\pi, 2\pi$)] direction., Comment: This is a pre-print of an article published in Scientific Reports. For electron-doped cuprates, the strong suppression of antiferromagnetic spin correlation by efficient reduction annealing by the "protect-annealing" method leads to superconductivity not only with lower Ce concentrations but also with higher transition temperatures. To reveal the nature of this superconducting state, we have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements of protect-annealed electron-doped superconductors Pr$_{1.3-x}$La$_{0.7}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ and directly investigated the superconducting gap. The gap was found to be consistent with $d$-wave symmetry, suggesting that strong electron correlation persists and hence antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations remain a candidate that mediates Copper pairing in the protect-annealed electron-doped cuprates.

Layers of twisted bilayer graphene exhibit varieties of exotic quantum phenomena1-5. Today, the twist angle {\Theta} has become an important degree of freedom for exploring novel states of matters, i.e. two-dimensional superconductivity ( {\Theta} = 1.1{\deg})6, 7 and a two-dimensional quasicrystal ({\Theta} = 30{\deg})8, 9. We report herein experimental observation on the photo-induced ultrafast dynamics of Dirac fermions in the quasicrystalline 30{\deg} twisted bilayer graphene (QCTBG). We discover that hot carriers are asymmetrically distributed between the two graphene layers, followed by the opposing femtosecond relaxations, by using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The key mechanism involves the differing carrier transport between layers and the transient doping from the substrate interface. The ultrafast dynamics scheme continues after the Umklapp scattering, which is induced by the incommensurate interlayer stacking of the quasi-crystallinity. The dynamics in the atomic layer opens the possibility of new applications and creates interdisciplinary links in the optoelectronics of van der Waals crystals.

We have investigated the superconducting gap of optimally doped Ba(Fe$_{0.65}$Ru$_{0.35}$)$_2$As$_2$ by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (APRES) using bulk-sensitive 7 eV laser and synchrotron radiation. It was found that the gap is isotropic in the $k_x$-$k_y$ plane both on the electron and hole Fermi surfaces (FSs). The gap magnitudes of two resolved hole FSs show similar $k_z$ dependences and decrease as $k_z$ approaches $\sim$ 2$\pi$/$c$ (i.e., around the Z point) unlike the other Fe-based superconductors reported so far, where the superconducting gap of only one hole FS shows a strong $k_z$ dependence. This unique gap structure can be understood in the scenario that the $d_{z^2}$ orbital character is mixed into both hole FSs due to the finite spin-orbit coupling between almost degenerate FSs and is reproduced by calculations within the random phase approximation including the spin-orbit coupling.

Transient single-particle spectral function of BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, a parent compound of iron-based superconductors, has been studied by time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with an extreme-ultraviolet laser generated by higher harmonics from Ar gas, which enables us to investigate the dynamics in the entire Brillouin zone. We observed electronic modifications from the spin-density-wave (SDW) ordered state within $\sim$ 1 ps after the arrival of a 1.5 eV pump pulse. We observed optically excited electrons at the zone center above $E_{F}$ at 0.12 ps, and their rapid decay. After the fast decay of the optically excited electrons, a thermalized state appears and survives for a relatively long time. From the comparison with the density-functional theory band structure for the paramagnetic and SDW states, we interpret the experimental observations as the melting of the SDW. Exponential decay constants for the thermalized state to recover back to the SDW ground state are $\sim$ 0.60 ps both around the zone center and the zone corner.

The iron chalcogenide Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ on the Te-rich side is known to exhibit the strongest electron correlations among the Fe-based superconductors, and is non-superconducting for $x$ < 0.1. In order to understand the origin of such behaviors, we have performed ARPES studies of Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ ($x$ = 0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.4). The obtained mass renormalization factors for different energy bands are qualitatively consistent with DFT + DMFT calculations. Our results provide evidence for strong orbital dependence of mass renormalization, and systematic data which help us to resolve inconsistencies with other experimental data. The unusually strong orbital dependence of mass renormalization in Te-rich Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ arises from the dominant contribution to the Fermi surface of the $d_{xy}$ band, which is the most strongly correlated and may contribute to the suppression of superconductivity.

We have studied the anisotropy in the in-plane resistivity and the electronic structure of isovalent Ru-substituted BaFe$_2$As$_2$ in the antiferromagnetic-orthorhombic phase using well-annealed crystals. The anisotropy in the residual resistivity component increases in proportional to the Ru dopant concentration, as in the case of Co-doped compounds. On the other hand, both the residual resistivity and the resistivity anisotropy induced by isovalent Ru substitution is found to be one order of magnitude smaller than those induced by heterovalent Co substitution. Combined with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy results, which show almost the same anisotropic band structure both for the parent and Ru-substituted compounds, we confirm the scenario that the anisotropy in the residual resistivity arises from anisotropic impurity scattering in the magneto-structurally ordered phase rather than directly from the anisotropic band structure of that phase., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

In the hole-doped cuprates, a small amount of carriers suppresses antiferromagnetism and induces superconductivity. In the electron-doped cuprates, on the other hand, superconductivity appears only in a narrow range of high electron concentration ($\sim$ doped Ce content) after reduction annealing, and strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) correlation persists in the superconducting phase. Recently, Pr$_{1.3-x}$La$_{0.7}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ (PLCCO) bulk single crystals annealed by a "protect annealing" method showed a high $T_c$ of $\sim$ 27 K for small Ce content down to $x \sim 0.05$. By angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements of PLCCO crystals, we observed a sharp quasi-particle peak on the entire Fermi surface without signature of an AFM pseudogap unlike all the previous work, indicating a dramatic reduction of AFM correlation length and/or of magnetic moments. The superconducting state was found to extend over a wide electron concentration range. The present ARPES results fundamentally change the long-standing picture on the electronic structure in the electron-doped regime., Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures

We systematically investigated the anisotropic in-plane resistivity of the iron telluride including three kinds of impurity atoms: excess Fe, Se substituted for Te, and Cu substituted for Fe. Sizable resistivity anisotropy was found in the magneto-structurally ordered phase whereas the sign is opposite ($\rho_a$ $>$ $\rho_b$, where the $b$-axis parameter is shorter than the $a$-axis one) to that observed in the transition-metal doped iron arsenides ($\rho_a$ $<$ $\rho_b$). On the other hand, our results demonstrate that the magnitude of the resistivity anisotropy in the iron tellurides is correlated with the amount of impurities, implying that the resistivity anisotropy originates from an exotic impurity effect like that in the iron arsenides. This suggests that the anisotropic carrier scattering by impurities is a universal phenomenon in the magneto-structurally ordered phase of the iron-based materials., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures

We performed a Laser angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study on a wide doping range of Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (BaK) iron-based superconductor. We observed a robust low-binding energy (BE) kink structure in the dispersion which is doping dependent where its energy peaks at the optimally-doped (OP) level (x~0.4) and decreases towards the underdoped (UD) and overdoped (OD) sides. It is also temperature-dependent and survives up to ~90K. We attribute this kink to electron-mode coupling in good agreement with the inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) results on the same compound which observed a similar bosonic mode associated with spin excitations. The relation between the mode energy ({\Omega}) and the SC transition temperature (Tc) deduced from our Laser ARPES data follow the universal relation deduced from INS and STM. In addition, we could resolve another kink at higher BE showing less doping and temperature dependence and may thus be of different origin., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We have investigated the superconducting(SC)-gap anisotropy for several Ba-doped KFe$_2$As$_2$ samples using laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We show that the SC-gap anisotropy and node positions drastically change with a small amount of Ba doping. Our results totally exclude a possibility of $d$-wave symmetry and strongly suggest that both spin and orbital fluctuations are important for the paring interaction in the Ba-doped K122.

The individual k\parallel and k\perp stripe excitations in fluctuating spin-charge stripes have not been observed yet. In Raman scattering if we set, for example, incident and scattered light polarizations to two possible stripe directions, we can observe the fluctuating stripe as if it is static. Using the different symmetry selection rule between the B1g two-magnon scattering and the B1g and B2g isotropic electronic scattering, we succeeded to obtain the k\parallel and k\perp strip magnetic excitations separately in La2-xSrxCuO4. Only the k\perp stripe excitations appear in the wide-energy isotropic electronic Raman scattering, indicating that the charge transfer is restricted to the direction perpendicular to the stripe. This is the same as the Burgers vector of an edge dislocation which easily slides perpendicularly to the stripe. Hence charges at the edge dislocation move together with the dislocation perpendicularly to the stripe, while other charges are localized. A looped edge dislocation has lower energy than a single edge dislocation. The superconducting coherence length is close to the inter-charge stripe distance at x \le 0.2. Therefore we conclude that Cooper pairs are formed at looped edge dislocations. The restricted charge transfer direction naturally explains the opening of a pseudogap around (0, {\pi}) for the stripe parallel to the b axis and the reconstruction of the Fermi surface to have a flat plane near (0, {\pi}). They break the four-fold rotational symmetry. Furthermore the systematic experiments revealed the carrier density dependence of the isotropic and anisotropic electronic excitations, the spin density wave and/or charge density wave gap near ({\pi}/2, {\pi}/2), and the strong coupling between the electronic states near ({\pi}/2, {\pi}/2) and the zone boundary phonons at ({\pi}, {\pi})., Comment: 26 pages, 24 figures

Quasiparticle dynamics on the topological surface state of Bi2Se3, Bi2Te3, and superconducting CuxBi2Se3 are studied by 7 eV laser-based angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We find strong mode-couplings in the Dirac-cone surface states at energies of ~3 and ~15-20 meV, which leads to an exceptionally large coupling constant of ~3, which is one of the strongest ever reported for any material. This result is compatible with the recent observation of a strong Kohn anomaly in the surface phonon dispersion of Bi2Se3, but it appears that the theoretically proposed "spin-plasmon" excitations realized in helical metals are also playing an important role. Intriguingly, the ~3 meV mode coupling is found to be enhanced in the superconducting state of CuxBi2Se3., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We study the superconducting(SC)-gap anisotropy of the \Gamma-centered hole Fermi surface in optimally doped FeTe_{0.6}Se_{0.4} (T_c = 14.5 K), using laser-excited angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We observe sharp superconducting coherence peaks at T = 2.5 K. In contrast to earlier ARPES studies but consistent with thermodynamic results, the momentum dependence shows a \cos(4\varphi) modulation of the SC-gap anisotropy. The observed SC-gap anisotropy strongly indicates that the pairing interaction is not a conventional phonon-mediated isotropic one. Instead, the results suggest the importance of second-nearest-neighbor electronic interactions between the iron sites in the framework of s_\pm-wave superconductivity., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, published in Physical Review Letters

We performed a Laser angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study on a wide doping range of Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (BaK) and precisely determined the doping evolution of the superconducting (SC) gaps in this compound. The gap size of the outer hole Fermi surface (FS) sheet around the Brillioun zone (BZ) center shows an abrupt drop with overdoping (for x > 0.6) while the inner and middle FS gaps roughly scale with Tc. This is accompanied by the simultaneous disappearance of the electron FS sheet with similar orbital character at the BZ corner. These results browse the different contributions of X2-Y2 and XZ/YZ orbitals to superconductivity in BaK and can be hardly completely reproduced by the available theories on iron-based superconductors.

Circular dichroism in the angular distribution (CDAD) of photoelectrons from SrTiO3:Nb and CuxBi2Se3 is investigated by 7-eV laser ARPES. In addition to the well-known node that occurs in CDAD when the incidence plane matches the mirror plane of the crystal, we show that another type of node occurs when the mirror plane of the crystal is vertical to the incidence plane and the electronic state is two dimensional. The flower-shaped CDAD's occurring around the Fermi level of SrTiO3:Nb and around the Dirac point of CuxBi2Se3 are explained on equal footings. We point out that the penetration depth of the topological states of CuxBi2Se3 depends on momentum.

We have measured Raman scattering spectra of single-crystalline FeTe0.6Se0.4 (T_c ~ 14.5 K) and its parent compound Fe1.074Te at various temperatures. In the parent compound Fe1.074Te, A1g and B1g modes have been observed at 157.5 and 202.3 cm-1, respectively, at 5 K. These frequencies qualitatively agree with the calculated results. Two-magnon excitation has been observed around 2300 cm-1 for both compounds. Temperature dependence between the electronic Raman spectra below and above T_c has been observed and 2\Delta and 2\Delta/k_BT_C have been estimated as 5.0 meV and 4.0, respectively., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, to be published in Phys. We have investigated the charge dynamics of VO2 by optical reflectivity measurements. Optical conductivity clearly shows a metal-insulator transition. In the metallic phase, a broad Drude-like structure is observed. On the other hand, in the insulating phase, a broad peak structure around 1.3 eV is observed. It is found that this broad structure observed in the insulating phase shows a temperature dependence. We attribute this to the electron-phonon interaction as in the photoemission spectra., Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. B

We have studied the electronic structure of epitaxially grown thin films of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$FeO$_3$ by {\it in-situ} photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements. The Fe 2$p$ and valence-band PES spectra and the O $1s$ XAS spectra of LaFeO$_3$ have been successfully reproduced by configuration-interaction cluster-model calculation and, except for the satellite structure, by band-structure calculation.From the shift of the binding energies of core levels, the chemical potential was found to be shifted downward as $x$ was increased. Among the three peaks in the valence-band spectra of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$FeO$_3$, the peak nearest to the Fermi level ($E_F$), due to the ``$e_{g}$ band'', was found to move toward $E_F$ and became weaker as $x$ was increased, whereas the intensity of the peak just above $E_F$ in the O $1s$ XAS spectra increased with $x$. The gap or pseudogap at $E_F$ was seen for all values of $x$. These results indicate that changes in the spectral line shape around $E_F$ are dominated by spectral weight transfer from below to above $E_F$ across the gap and are therefore highly non-rigid-band-like., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

We have made a detailed temperature-dependent photoemission study of VO_2/TiO_2(001) thin films, which show a metal-insulator transition at \sim 300 K. Clean surfaces were obtained by annealing the films in an oxygen atmosphere. Spectral weight transfer between the coherent and incoherent parts accompanying the metal-insulator transition was clearly observed. We also observed a hysteretic behavior of the spectra for heating-cooling cycles. We have derived the ``bulk'' spectrum of the metallic phase and found that it has a strong incoherent part. The width of the coherent part is comparable to that given by band-structure calculation in spite of its reduced spectral weight, indicating that the momentum dependence of the self-energy is significant. This is attributed to by ferromagnetic fluctuation arising from Hund's rule coupling between different d orbitals as originally proposed by Zylbersztejn and Mott. In the insulating phase, the width of the V 3d band shows strong temperature dependence. We attribute this to electron-phonon interaction and have reproduced it using the independent boson model with a very large coupling constant., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. B

We have studied the electronic structure of $\beta$-Na$_{0.33}$V$_2$O$_5$, which becomes a superconductor under pressure, by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Clear band dispersions is observed only along the chain direction, indicating the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) electronic structure. The spectra of the V 3d band are dominated by a Gaussian-like broad feature at $\sim$ 1 eV below the Fermi level ($E_F$) with negligible intensity at $E_F$, which we attribute to strong electron-phonon coupling as in other 1D polaronic metals. In the momentum space, the spectra show a maximum intensity at $k \sim \pm \pi/4b$, where $b$ is the V-V distance along the b-axis, reflecting the band filling of the chain and/or ladder., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

The chemical states of the ZnGeP$_{2}$:Mn interface, which shows ferromagnetism above room-temperature, has been studied by photoemission spectroscopy. Mn deposition on the ZnGeP$_2$ substrate heated to 400$^{\circ}$C induced Mn substitution for Zn and then the formation of metallic Mn-Ge-P compounds. Depth profile studies have shown that Mn 3$d$ electrons changed their character from itinerant to localized along the depth, and in the deep region, dilute divalent Mn species ($\textless$ 5 % Mn) was observed with a coexisting metallic Fermi edge of non-Mn 3$d$ character. The possibility of hole doping through Mn substitution for Ge and/or Zn vacancy is discussed., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

We have measured the photoemission spectra of Nd$_{1-x}$Sm$_{x}$NiO$_{3}$, where the metal-insulator transition and the N\'{e}el ordering occur at the same temperature for $x \lesssim 0.4$ and the metal-insulator transition temperature ($T_{MI}$) is higher than the N\'{e}el temperature for $x \gtrsim 0.4$. For $x \le 0.4$, the spectral intensity at the Fermi level is high in the metallic phase above $T_{MI}$ and gradually decreases with cooling in the insulating phase below $T_{MI}$ while for $x > 0.4$ it shows a pseudogap-like behavior above $T_{MI}$ and further diminishes below $T_{MI}$. The results clearly establish that there is a sharp change in the nature of the electronic correlations in the middle ($x \sim 0.4$) of the metallic phase of the $R$NiO$_3$ system., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure, submitted to Phys. We have studied the electronic structure of the skutterudite compounds Co(Sb$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$)$_3$ (x= 0, 0.02, 0.04) by photoemission spectroscopy. Valence-band spectra revealed that Sb 5p states are dominant near the Fermi level and are hybridized with Co 3d states just below it. The spectra of {\it p}-type CoSb$_3$ are well reproduced by the band-structure calculation, which suggests that the effect of electron correlations is not strong in CoSb$_3$. When Te is substituted for Sb and n-type carriers are doped into CoSb$_3$, the spectra are shifted to higher binding energies as predicted by the rigid-band model. From this shift and the free-electron model for the conduction and valence bands, we have estimated the band gap of CoSb$_3$ to be 0.03-0.04 eV, which is consistent with the result of transport measurements. Photoemission spectra of RhSb$_3$ have also been measured and revealed similarities to and differences from those of CoSb$_3$., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures
