Abstract

Searches for the permanent electric dipole moment of the neutron (nEDM) provide strong constraints on theories beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. The TUCAN collaboration is constructing a source for ultracold neutrons (UCN) and an apparatus to search for the nEDM at TRIUMF, Vancouver, Canada. In this work, we estimate that the spallation-driven UCN source based on a superfluid helium converter will provide $(1.38\pm0.02) \times 10^7$ polarized UCN at a density of $217\pm3$~UCN/cm$^3$ to a room-temperature EDM experiment per fill. With $(1.51\pm0.02) \times 10^6$ neutrons detected after the Ramsey cycle, the statistical sensitivity for an nEDM search per storage cycle will be $(1.94\pm0.06) \times 10^{-25}\,e$cm (1$\sigma$). Abstract

The TRIUMF Ultra-Cold Advanced Neutron (TUCAN) collaboration aims at a precision neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) measurement with an uncertainty of $10^{-27}\,e\cdot\mathrm{cm}$, which is an order-of-magnitude better than the current nEDM upper limit and enables us to test Supersymmetry. To achieve this precision, we are developing a new high-intensity ultracold neutron (UCN) source using super-thermal UCN production in superfluid helium (He-II) and a nEDM spectrometer. Abstract

Various superconducting detector solenoids for particle physics have been developed in the world. The key technology is the aluminum-stabilized superconducting conductor for almost all the detector magnets in particle physics experiments. With the progress of the conductor, the coil fabrication technology has progressed as well, such as the inner coil winding technique, indirect cooling, transparent vacuum vessel, quench protection scheme using pure aluminum strips and so on. The detector solenoids design study is in progress for future big projects in Japan and Europe, that is, ILC, FCC and CLIC, based on the technologies established over many years. The combination of good mechanical properties and keeping a high RRR is a key point for the development of Al-stabilized conductor. The present concern for the detector solenoid development is to have been gradually losing the key technologies and experiences, because large-scale detector magnets with Al-stabilized conductor has not been fabricated after the success of CMS and ATLAS-CS in LHC. Complementary efforts are needed to resume an equivalent level of expertise, to extend the effort on research and to develop these technologies and apply them to future detector magnet projects. Especially, further effort is necessary for the industrial technology of Al-stabilized superconductor production. The worldwide collaboration with relevant institutes and industries will be critically important to re-realize and validate the required performances. Some detector solenoids for mid-scale experiment wound with conventional copper-stabilized Nb-Ti conductor require precise control of magnetic field distribution. Abstract

We constrain anisotropic cosmic birefringence using four-point correlations of even-parity $E$-mode and odd-parity $B$-mode polarization in the cosmic microwave background measurements made by the POLARization of the Background Radiation (POLARBEAR) experiment in its first season of observations. We find that the anisotropic cosmic birefringence signal from any parity-violating processes is consistent with zero. The Faraday rotation from anisotropic cosmic birefringence can be compared with the equivalent quantity generated by primordial magnetic fields if they existed. The POLARBEAR nondetection translates into a 95% confidence level (C.L.) upper limit of 93 nanogauss (nG) on the amplitude of an equivalent primordial magnetic field inclusive of systematic uncertainties. This four-point correlation constraint on Faraday rotation is about 15 times tighter than the upper limit of 1380 nG inferred from constraining the contribution of Faraday rotation to two-point correlations of $B$-modes measured by Planck in 2015. Metric perturbations sourced by primordial magnetic fields would also contribute to the $B$-mode power spectrum. Using the POLARBEAR measurements of the $B$-mode power spectrum (two-point correlation), we set a 95% C.L. upper limit of 3.9 nG on primordial magnetic fields assuming a flat prior on the field amplitude. This limit is comparable to what was found in the Planck 2015 two-point correlation analysis with both temperature and polarization. We perform a set of systematic error tests and find no evidence for contamination. Abstract

Ultracold neutrons (UCNs) are a powerful tool for probing the Standard Model at high precision. The TRIUMF Ultracold Advanced Neutron (TUCAN) collaboration is building a new UCN source to provide unprecedented densities of UCNs for experiments. This source will use a tantalum-clad tungsten spallation target, receiving up to 40 µA of 480-MeV protons from TRIUMF’s main cyclotron. The beamline and target were constructed from 2014 to 2016 and operated at beam currents up to 10 µA from 2017 to 2019 as part of a prototype UCN source. We describe the design choices for the target and target-handling system, as well as our benchmarking of the target performance using UCN production measurements.

Abstract

We propose a high thermal conductivity infrared (IR) filter using alumina for use in millimeter wave detection systems. We constructed a prototype two-layer anti-reflection (AR) coated alumina filter with a diameter of 100mm and a thickness of 2mm, and characterized its thermal and optical properties. The transmittance of this filter at 95GHz and 150GHz is 97% and 95% while the estimated 3dB cutoff frequency is at 450GHz. The high thermal conductivity of alumina minimizes thermal gradients. We measure a differential temperature of only 0.21K between the center and the edge of the filter when it is mounted on a thermal anchor of 77K. We also constructed a thermal model based on the prototype filter and analyzed the scalability of the filter diameter. We conclude that temperature increase at the center of alumina IR filter is less than 6K even with a large diameter of 500mm, when the temperature at the edge of the filter is 50K. This is suitable for an application to a large-throughput next-generation cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization experiment, such as POLARBEAR-2 (PB-2).

13. Cryogenic design for a high intensity ultracold neutron source at TRIUMF

Abstract

The TUCAN (TRIUMF Ultra-Cold Advanced Neutron) collaboration has been developing a source of high-intensity ultra-cold neutrons for use in a neutron electric dipole search. The source is composed of a spallation neutron source and a superfluid helium ultra-cold neutron converter, surrounded by a cold moderator. The temperature of the superfluid helium needs to be maintained at approximately 1.0 K to suppress up-scattering by phonons. The Kapitza conductance and the heat transport by the superfluid helium are key parameters which need to be well characterized. We have therefore investigated them in first experiments. Current efforts are directed at optimizing the design of the helium cryostat.

Abstract

COMET (COherent Muon to Electron Transition) is an experimental project that hunts for a phenomenon of the conversion from the muon to the electron (mu-e conversion). The mu-e conversion violates the lepton flavor universality and its discovery indicates a proof of the physics beyond the standard model of the particle physics. The experiment utilizes a high-intensity primary proton-beam of J-PARC (Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex). The proton beam is injected to a target about 700mm long to generate a high intensity muon beam so as to accumulate huge statistics and achieve the final goal of a sensitivity of 10⁻¹⁶. Construction of the experimental facility is underway at a high pace towards an engineering run in 2022 and the first physics run in 2023. Magnetic measurements are used for studying the full-scale magnet system assembled with the cryostat for the J-PARC neutrino proton beam line. The beam simulation has shown that the measured values of magnetic field are sufficient for the primary proton beam transport.

Abstract

The strain dependence of the free-exciton resonance energies in AlN epilayers and the values are analyzed by using an appropriated Hamiltonian assuming equibiaxial stress for the wurtzite crystal structure in order to obtain valence band parameters. Abstract

The development and testing of the first full-scale prototype magnet system assembled with the cryostat for the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) proton beam line of neutrino experiment are discussed. Findings reveal the successful cooling of the magnets to 4.5 K by forced flow supercritical helium and excitation up to the current of 7345 A.

Abstract

The International Large Detector, ILD, is a detector concept which has been developed for the electron-positron collider ILC. The detector has been optimized for precision physics in a range of energies between 90 GeV and 1 TeV. ILD features a high precision, large volume combined silicon and gaseous tracking system, together with a high granularity calorimeter, all inside a 3.5 T solenoidal magnetic field. The paradigm of particle flow has been the guiding principle of the design of ILD. In this document the required performance of the detector, the proposed implementation and the readiness of the different technologies needed for the implementation are discussed. This is done in the framework of the ILC collider proposal, now under consideration in Japan, and includes site specific aspects needed to build and operate the detector at the proposed ILC site in Japan.

The steady state and transient heat transfer on a flat plate at one end of a rectangular duct with an orifice are calculated in He II for bath temperatures of 1.8 K to 2.14 K at atmospheric pressure. Numerical analysis are performed for the steady-state and the transient heat transfer in the duct with the orifice by using the two-dimensional computer named SUPER-2D based on the two-fluid model and the theory of mutual friction.

Abstract

The TUCAN (TRIUMF Ultra-Cold Advanced Neutron) collaboration has been developing a source of high-intensity ultra-cold neutrons for use in a neutron electric dipole search. The source is composed of a spallation neutron source and a superfluid helium ultra-cold neutron converter, surrounded by a cold moderator. The temperature of the superfluid helium needs to be maintained at approximately 1.0 K to suppress up-scattering by phonons. The Kapitza conductance and the heat transport by the superfluid helium are key parameters which need to be well characterized. We have therefore investigated them in first experiments.
