Its incidence rate is significantly reduced by eradication, and thereby, eradication therapy is generally performed. Disulfiram is an oral prescription drug mainly used for the treatment of alcohol dependence. In recent years, reports have been made on its anticancer and antibacterial effects, and thus, it has recently become an interesting subject. This study aimed to examine the antibacterial activity of disulfiram, investigate the presence or absence of its antibacterial activity on H. pylori, and determine whether it could be a new bactericidal drug against drug-resistant H. pylori.Materials and Methods: Drug-sensitive strains of H. pylori and amoxicillin-resistant, clarithromycin-resistant, and metronidazole-resistant strains were used, and a growth inhibition test of H. pylori using disulfiram was performed. Furthermore, the expression of urease, vacuolating cytotoxin A (VacA), and CagA, the virulence proteins of H. pylori, was quantitatively analyzed using the Western blotting method. In addition, for H. pylori used in this study, the 16SrDNA sequence, a ribosomal gene involved in protein production, was analyzed to examine the presence or absence of gene mutation.Results: Disulfiram suppressed the growth of 7 out of 12 H. pylori strains at 1 μg/mL, and no correlation was observed between their susceptibility/resistance to current eradication antimicrobial drugs and disulfiram resistance. Disulfiram reduced the expression levels of urease, VacA, and CagA proteins. H. pylori, which showed resistance to disulfiram, tended to have fewer gene deletions/insertions in the 16S rDNA sequence; however, no specific mutation was detected.Conclusion: Disulfiram has a bactericidal effect on H. pylori at low concentrations, suggesting that it can be used as a supplement for current H. pylori eradication drugs.Keywords: disulfiram, Helicobacter pylori, urease, vacuolating toxin, CagA

Home blood pressure is important because it is more strongly associated with target organ damage and total mortality than clinic blood pressure measurements. Regular moderate aerobic exercise has antihypertensive effects. This study aims to examine the effect of aerobic exercise therapy on blood pressure at home in patients with diabetes.Patients and Methods: In this crossover randomized controlled trial, 110 patients with type 2 diabetes will be randomly assigned to two groups: an exercise preceding group and an exercise lagging group. During the exercise period, patients will be instructed to walk either 30 minutes twice each day or 60 minutes once each day for at least 3 days per week. During the non-exercise period, patients will be permitted to perform physical activity associated with activities of daily life. Patients will be followed up for 56 days. The primary outcome will be the mean nocturnal blood pressure from day 24 to 28 during the exercise period compared to that during the non-exercise period. The secondary outcome will include variation in nocturnal blood pressure, mean blood pressure values and variation of morning and evening blood pressure from day 24 to 28 in the exercise period compared to the non-exercise period, body weight, body mass index and bioelectrical impedance analysis. Biochemical tests such as hemoglobin A1c level, blood glucose level, serum lipid profile, renal function, uric acid levels and liver function tests will also be measured.Discussion: This randomized controlled trial will provide critical information regarding the effectiveness of moderate exercise on nocturnal blood pressure reduction. If successful, the results of this randomized controlled trial may increase exercise motivation in people with diabetes and may lead to improvement or prevention of target organ damage and overall mortality.Trial Registration: Trial registration: University Hospital Medical Information Network, UMIN 000035973. Here we present findings from the Japanese subgroup of KRONOS.Methods: Patients received BGF MDI 320/18/9.6μg, glycopyrrolate/formoterol fumarate (GFF) MDI 18/9.6μg, budesonide/formoterol fumarate (BFF) MDI 320/9.6μg, or budesonide/formoterol fumarate dry powder inhaler (BUD/FORM DPI) 400/12μg twice-daily for 24 weeks. The primary endpoint was the change from baseline in morning pre-dose trough forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) over Weeks 12–24. Symptoms, quality of life, exacerbations, and safety were also assessed.Results: In total, 416 Japanese patients (21.9% of the global KRONOS population) were randomized and treated with BGF MDI (n=139), GFF MDI (n=138), BFF MDI (n=70), or BUD/FORM DPI (n=69). Nominally significant improvements in the change from baseline in morning pre-dose trough FEV1 over Weeks 12–24 were observed for BGF MDI vs GFF MDI (least squares mean [LSM] difference 37 mL, 95% confidence interval [CI] 3, 72; P=0.0337) and BFF MDI (67 mL; 95% CI 25, 109; P=0.0020). Treatment with BGF MDI led to a nominally significant reduction in the rate of moderate/severe exacerbations vs GFF MDI (rate ratio 0.40, 95% CI 0.19, 0.83; P=0.0142). Compared with dual therapies, numerical improvements were observed with BGF MDI for Transition Dyspnea Index focal score and the change from baseline in Evaluating Respiratory Symptoms in COPD total score (P≤0.3899). All treatments were generally well tolerated.Conclusion: BGF MDI nominally significantly improved lung function and numerically improved symptoms vs GFF MDI and BFF MDI. BGF MDI nominally significantly reduced exacerbations vs GFF MDI in Japanese patients with COPD. In this 28-week extension study (NCT03262012), we investigated the long-term safety and tolerability of BGF MDI in Japanese patients with moderate-to-very severe COPD who completed the 24-week Phase III randomized, double-blind, multicenter KRONOS study (NCT02497001).Materials and methods: Patients randomized to BGF MDI 320/18/9.6 μg, glycopyrrolate/formoterol fumarate (GFF) MDI 18/9.6 μg, budesonide/formoterol fumarate (BFF) MDI 320/9.6 μg, or budesonide/formoterol fumarate dry powder inhaler (BUD/FORM DPI) 400/12 μg twice-daily in KRONOS continued treatment for up to 28 additional weeks. Safety was evaluated over 52 weeks via adverse event (AE) monitoring, electrocardiograms, clinical laboratory testing, and vital sign measurements.Results: The safety population included 416 patients who received BGF MDI (n=139), GFF MDI (n=138), BFF MDI (n=70), or BUD/FORM DPI (n=69). Treatment-emergent AE (TEAE) rates were similar across treatment groups (range: 82.6–82.9%). The most frequent TEAEs overall were nasopharyngitis (32.2%) and bronchitis (9.9%). The incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events was low across groups (range: 0.0–2.9%). Over 52 weeks, the incidence of confirmed pneumonia was 9.4% (BGF MDI), 3.6% (GFF MDI), 5.7% (BFF MDI), and 2.9% (BUD/FORM DPI); in the 28-week extension period, rates were comparable across groups (range: 2.9–5.7%). Six deaths were reported (0.7–2.2% per group); none were considered treatment-related. No clinically meaningful trends were observed in electrocardiograms, laboratory parameters, or vital signs over time in any of the treatment groups.Conclusion: All treatments were well tolerated over 52 weeks, and the safety profile of BGF MDI was generally comparable to dual long-acting muscarinic antagonist (LAMA)/long-acting β2-agonist (LABA) and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS)/LABA therapies. This study aimed to assess rates of resistance to antibiotics; amoxicillin, clarithromycin and metronidazole in a University Hospital in Japan. Materials and methods: H. pylori (208 strains) were isolated from patients at the Okayama University Hospital in Japan. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were determined using the mean values of the E-test to determine the antimicrobial susceptibilities of the strains. Sequencing and gene analysis were performed to analyze resistance genes to clarithromycin and amoxicillin. Results: Rates of amoxicillin, clarithromycin, and metronidazole resistance were 13%, 48%, and 49%, respectively. Genetic analysis indicated that the A2143G point mutation in 23S rDNA is closely associated with the MIC of clarithromycin. The MIC in amoxicillin-resistant strains increased with an increase in the number of PBP1A amino acids mutations. Conclusion: Genetic analysis for resistant strains is not clinically effective in cases of amoxicillin resistance. Numerous bacteria with already high antibiotic resistance rates have been isolated in large hospitals such as a University Hospital. 7. Influence of bath composition on Ti metal deposition in molten CaCl2 containing calcium titanate

Abstract

The dependence of the cathodic behavior of a Ti ion on the molar ratio of CaO to TiO2 (RCaO/TiO2) was investigated in molten CaCl2 above 1373 K, and the influence of RCaO/TiO2 on Ti metal deposition was discussed. The reduction mechanism changed at RCaO/TiO2 = 1.5; a three-step reduction of Ti was suggested in the melt of RCaO/TiO2 < 1.5, while a two-step reduction seemed to occur above RCaO/TiO2 = 1.5. Titanium metal deposition was also affected by RCaO/TiO2 as well as by the cathode potential, and the suitable RCaO/TiO2 was likely 1.5. Since this value was the same as the suitable value in the molten fluoride system, Ti metal was thought to be obtained only from Ti2O76-. Silicon and Al metal were obtained electrochemically in molten CaCl2 containing calcium silicate and aluminate more easily than Ti metal. The difficulty of the Ti metal deposition is likely to be caused by the so-called shuttle reaction; the shuttle reaction can occur in the Ti metal electrolysis because some ionic states of Ti are stable in the bath. To realize better Ti metal deposition, the control of the shuttle reaction should be important.

Abstract

We analyse the appearance of a mechanical torque that acts on a chiral molecule: a single-stranded DNA, in which the spin-orbit interaction is expected to induce a spin-selectivity effect. The mechanical torque is shown to appear as a result of the non-conservation of the spin current in the presence of the spin-orbit interaction. Adopting a simple microscopic model Hamiltonian for a chiral molecule connected to source and drain leads, and accounting for the mechanical torque acting on the chiral molecule as the back action on the electrons traversing the molecule, we derive the spin continuity-equation. It connects the spin current expressed by a Landauer-type formula and the mechanical torque. Thus, by injecting a spin-polarized current from the source electrode, it is possible to generate a torque, which will rotate the DNA molecule., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

A Charge eXchange Recombination Spectroscopy (CXRS) system designed to measure the poloidal rotation velocity is developed in Heliotron J. The poloidal CXRS system measures the carbon emission line (C VI, n=8-7, 529.05nm) and the Doppler shift of the emission line provides the information of plasma rotation velocity. A high throughput photographic-lens monochromator (F/2.8) with 0.73nm/mm dispersion is adopted to achieve high rotation velocity and temporal resolution. Since two heating neutral beams from two tangential injectors (NBI) are used as the diagnostic beams, a wide observation range (0.26 < 0.06) at peripheral region (r/a>0.6). The system design and the calibration method are presented. The initial results of poloidal rotation measurement show an electron diamagnetic rotation in an NBI heated plasma, while an ion diamagnetic rotation is observed when ECH is additionally applied. Abstract

Anti-angiogenic therapies for cancer such as VEGF neutralizing antibody bevacizumab have limited durability. While mechanisms of resistance remain undefined, it is likely that acquired resistance to anti-angiogenic therapy will involve alterations of the tumor microenvironment. We confirmed increased tumor-associated macrophages in bevacizumab-resistant glioblastoma patient specimens and two novel glioblastoma xenograft models of bevacizumab resistance. Microarray analysis suggested downregulated macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) to be the most pertinent mediator of increased macrophages. Bevacizumab-resistant patient glioblastomas and both novel xenograft models of resistance had less MIF than bevacizumab-naive tumors, and harbored more M2/protumoral macrophages that specifically localized to the tumor edge. Xenografts expressing MIF-shRNA grew more rapidly with greater angiogenesis and had macrophages localizing to the tumor edge which were more prevalent and proliferative, and displayed M2 polarization, whereas bevacizumab-resistant xenografts transduced to upregulate MIF exhibited the opposite changes. Bone marrow-derived macrophage were polarized to an M2 phenotype in the presence of condition-media derived from bevacizumab-resistant xenograft-derived cells, while recombinant MIF drove M1 polarization. Media from macrophages exposed to bevacizumab-resistant tumor cell conditioned media increased glioma cell proliferation compared with media from macrophages exposed to bevacizumab-responsive tumor cell media, suggesting that macrophage polarization in bevacizumab-resistant xenografts is the source of their aggressive biology and results from a secreted factor. Two mechanisms of bevacizumab-induced MIF reduction were identified: (1) bevacizumab bound MIF and blocked MIF-induced M1 polarization of macrophages; and (2) VEGF increased glioma MIF production in a VEGFR2-dependent manner, suggesting that bevacizumab-induced VEGF depletion would downregulate MIF. Site-directed biopsies revealed enriched MIF and VEGF at the enhancing edge in bevacizumab-naive patients. This MIF enrichment was lost in bevacizumab-resistant glioblastomas, driving a tumor edge M1-to-M2 transition. Thus, bevacizumab resistance is driven by reduced MIF at the tumor edge causing proliferative expansion of M2 macrophages, which in turn promotes tumor growth.

Abstract

Background and purposeImmune response to cancer therapy may result in pseudoprogression, which can only be identified retrospectively and may disrupt an effective therapy. This study assesses whether serial parametric response mapping (a voxel-by-voxel method of image analysis also known as functional diffusion mapping) analysis of ADC measurements following peptide-based vaccination may help prospectively distinguish progression from pseudoprogression in pediatric patients with diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas.Materials and methodsFrom 2009 to 2012, 21 children, 4-18 years of age, with diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas were enrolled in a serial peptide-based vaccination protocol following radiation therapy. DWI was acquired before immunotherapy and at 6-week intervals during vaccine treatment. Pseudoprogression was identified retrospectively on the basis of clinical and radiographic findings, excluding DWI. Parametric response mapping was used to analyze 96 scans, comparing ADC measures at multiple time points (from the first vaccine to up to 12 weeks after the vaccine was halted) with prevaccine baseline values. Log-transformed fractional increased ADC, fractional decreased ADC, and parametric response mapping ratio (fractional increased ADC/fractional decreased ADC) were compared between patients with and without pseudoprogression, by using generalized estimating equations with inverse weighting by cluster size.ResultsMedian survival was 13.1 months from diagnosis (range, 6.4-24.9 months). Four of 21 children (19%) were assessed as experiencing pseudoprogression. Patients with pseudoprogression had higher fitted average log-transformed parametric response mapping ratios (P = .01) and fractional decreased ADCs (P = .0004), compared with patients without pseudoprogression.ConclusionsSerial parametric response mapping of ADC, performed at multiple time points of therapy, may distinguish pseudoprogression from true progression in patients with diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas treated with peptide-based vaccination.

Abstract

In much of medical oncology, including neuro-oncology, there is great interest to evaluate the therapeutic potential of immune-based therapies including vaccines, adoptive T cell strategies and modulators of immune checkpoint regulators such as cytotoxic T lymphocyte antigen 4 and programmed death 1. Immune-based treatments exert an indirect anti-tumor effect by generating potent, tumor-targeting immune responses. Robust anti-tumor immune responses have been shown to achieve encouraging radiographic responses across the spectrum of applied immunotherapeutics which are felt to be indicative of a bona fide anti-tumor effect. Conversely, worsening of imaging findings, particularly early in the course of immunotherapy administration, can be challenging to interpret with growing evidence demonstrating that at least a subset of such patients ultimately will derive meaningful clinical benefit. The immune related response criteria were generated to provide guidance regarding the interpretation of such complex imaging findings, for general medical oncologists prescribing immunotherapeutics. An analogous effort that addresses challenges associated with imaging assessment and incorporates nuances associated with neuro-oncology patients is underway and is referred to as the immunotherapy response assessment in neuro-oncology criteria.

Abstract

We demonstrate a new high-order harmonic generation mechanism reaching the `water window' spectral region in experiments with multi-terawatt femtosecond lasers irradiating gas jets. A few hundred harmonic orders are resolved, giving uJ/sr pulses. Harmonics are collectively emitted by an oscillating electron spike formed at the joint of the boundaries of a cavity and bow wave created by a relativistically self-focusing laser in underdense plasma. The spike sharpness and stability are explained by catastrophe theory. The mechanism is corroborated by particle-in-cell simulations.

Abstract

We study the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, a_\mu, and lepton flavor violating decay \mu -> e \gamma in TeV scale B-L extension of the Standard Model (SM) with inverse seesaw mechanism. We show that the B-L contributions to a_\mu are severely constrained, therefore the SM contribution remains intact. We also emphasize that the current experimental limit of BR(\mu -> e \gamma) can be satisfied for a wide range of parameter space and it can be within the reach of MEG experiment., Comment: 10 pages, 4 Figures

Abstract

Transverse momentum (p^e_T) spectra of electrons from semileptonic weak decays of heavy flavor mesons in the range of 0.3 < p^e_T < 9.0 GeV/c have been measured at mid-rapidity (|eta| < 0.35) by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in p+p and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV. The nuclear modification factor R_AA with respect to p+p collisions indicates substantial energy loss of heavy quarks in the produced medium. In addition, the azimuthal anisotropy parameter v_2 has been measured for 0.3 < p^e_T < 5.0 GeV/c in Au+Au collisions. Abstract

Fast parton probes produced by hard scattering and embedded within collisions of large nuclei have shown that partons suffer large energy loss and that the produced medium may respond collectively to the lost energy. We present measurements of neutral pion trigger particles at transverse momenta p^t_T = 4-12 GeV/c and associated charged hadrons (p^a_T = 0.5-7 GeV/c) as a function of relative azimuthal angle Delta Phi at midrapidity in Au+Au and p+p collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV. These data lead to two major observations. First, the relative angular distribution of low momentum hadrons, whose shape modification has been interpreted as a medium response to parton energy loss, is found to be modified only for p^t_T < 7 GeV/c. At higher p^t_T, the data are consistent with unmodified or very weakly modified shapes, even for the lowest measured p^a_T. This observation presents a quantitative challenge to medium response scenarios. Second, the associated yield of hadrons opposite to the trigger particle in Au+Au relative to that in p+p (I_AA) is found to be suppressed at large momentum (IAA ~ 0.35-0.5), but less than the single particle nuclear modification factor (R_AA ~0.2)., Comment: 427 authors, 6 pages text, 3 figures, 1 table. Abstract

We report on a measurement of the Upsilon(1S+2S+3S) -> e+e- cross section at midrapidity in p+p collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV. We find the cross section to be 114 +/- 38 (stat.) +23,-24 (syst.) pb. Perturbative QCD calculations at next-to-leading order in the Color Evaporation Model are in agreement with our measurement, while calculations in the Color Singlet Model underestimate it by 2 sigma. Our result is consistent with the trend seen in world data as a function of the center-of-mass energy of the collision and extends the availability of Upsilon data to RHIC energies. The dielectron continuum in the invariant mass range near the Upsilon is also studied to obtain a combined cross section of Drell-Yan plus (b b-bar) -> e+e-., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, STAR Collaboration

Abstract

AC susceptibility measurements have been carried out on superconducting LaO1-xFxFeAs for x=0.07 and 0.14 under He-gas pressures to about 0.8 GPa. Not only do the measured values of dTc/dP differ substantially from those obtained in previous studies using other pressure media, but the Tc(P) dependences observed depend on the detailed pressure/temperature history of the sample. A sizeable sensitivity of Tc(P) to shear stresses provides a possible explanation.

Abstract

We propose a E_6 inspired supersymmetric model with a non-Abelian discrete flavor symmetry (S_4 group); that is, SU(3)_c x SU(2)_W x U(1)_Y x U(1)_X x S_4 x Z_2. In our scenario, the additional abelian gauge symmetry; U(1)_X, not only solves the mu-problem in the minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model(MSSM), but also requires new exotic fields which play an important role in solving flavor puzzles. If our exotic quarks can be embedded into a S_4 triplet, which corresponds to the number of the generation, one finds that dangerous proton decay can be well-suppressed. Hence, it might be expected that the generation structure for lepton and quark in the SM(Standard Model) can be understood as a new system in order to stabilize the proton in a supersymemtric standard model (SUSY). Moreover, due to the nature of the discrete non-Abelian symmetry itself, Yukawa coupling constants of our model are drastically reduced. Abstract

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements of an iron (Fe)-based superconductor LaFeAsO_{1-x}F_x (x = 0.08 and 0.14) were performed at ambient pressure and under pressure. The relaxation rate 1/T_1 for the overdoped samples (x = 0.14) shows T-linear behavior just above T_c, and pressure application enhances 1/T_1T similar to the behavior of T_c. This implies that 1/T_1T = constant originates from the Korringa relation, and an increase in the density of states at the Fermi energy D(E_F) leads to the enhancement of T_c. In the underdoped samples (x = 0.08), 1/T_1T measured at ambient pressure also shows T-independent behavior in a wide temperature range above T_c. However, it shows Curie-Weiss-like T dependence at 3.0 GPa accompanied by a small increase in T_c, suggesting that predominant antiferromagnetic fluctuation suppresses development of superconductivity or remarkable enhancement of T_c. The qualitatively different features between underdoped and overdoped samples are systematically explained by a band calculation with hole and electron pockets.

If dark matter (DM) annihilation accounts for the tantalizing excess of cosmic ray electron/positrons, as reported by the PAMELA, ATIC, HESS and FERMI observatories, then the implied annihilation cross section must be relatively large. This results, in the context of standard cosmological models, in very small relic DM abundances that are incompatible with astrophysical observations. Abstract

75As-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) on an iron-based superconductor LaFeAsO1-xFx (x=0.14) was performed under a pressure of 3GPa. Enhancement of superconducting transition temperature Tc was confirmed from the relaxation rate 1/T1; Tc goes up to 40K by applying pressure up to 3GPa. 1/T1T, which is temperature independent just above Tc and gives a measure of the density of states (DOS) at the Fermi energy, enhances by applying pressure. These facts suggest that the increase of the DOS leads to the enhancement of Tc. Abstract

We analyze the dark matter problem in the context of supersymmetric U(1)_{B-L} model. In this model, the lightest neutalino can be the B-L gaugino widetilde {Z}_{B-L} or the extra Higgsinos widetilde{chi}_{1,2} dominated. We compute the thermal relic abundance of these particles and show that, unlike the LSP in MSSM, they can account for the observed relic abundance with no conflict with other phenomenological constraints. Abstract

We present measurements of net charge fluctuations in $Au + Au$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = $ 19.6, 62.4, 130, and 200 GeV, $Cu + Cu$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = $ 62.4, 200 GeV, and $p + p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = $ 200 GeV using the dynamical net charge fluctuations measure $\nu_{+-{\rm,dyn}}$. We observe that the dynamical fluctuations are non-zero at all energies and exhibit a modest dependence on beam energy. A weak system size dependence is also observed. We examine the collision centrality dependence of the net charge fluctuations and find that dynamical net charge fluctuations violate $1/N_{ch}$ scaling, but display approximate $1/N_{part}$ scaling. We also study the azimuthal and rapidity dependence of the net charge correlation strength and observe strong dependence on the azimuthal angular range and pseudorapidity widths integrated to measure the correlation., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, STAR Collaboration

Abstract

Precise and absolute beam polarization measurements are critical for the RHIC spin physics program. Because all experimental spin-dependent results are normalized by beam polarization, the normalization uncertainty contributes directly to final physics uncertainties. We aimed to perform the beam polarization measurement to an accuracy of $\Delta P_{beam}/P_{beam} < 5%$. The absolute polarimeter consists of Polarized Atomic Hydrogen Gas Jet Target and left-right pairs of silicon strip detectors and was installed in the RHIC-ring in 2004. This system features \textit{proton-proton} elastic scattering in the Coulomb nuclear interference (CNI) region. Precise measurements of the analyzing power $A_N$ of this process has allowed us to achieve $\Delta P_{beam}/P_{beam} =4.2%$ in 2005 for the first long spin-physics run. In this report, we describe the entire set up and performance of the system. The procedure of beam polarization measurement and analysis results from 2004-2005 are described. Physics topics of $A_N$ in the CNI region (four-momentum transfer squared $0.001 < -t < 0.032 ~ ({\rm GeV}/c)^2$) are also discussed. Abstract

Abstract

The non-resonant microwave discharge in strong magnetic fields was investigated in Heliotron J under the condition, ωce/ωMW > 1 (ωce and ωMW are the angular electron cyclotron frequency and the angular microwave frequency, respectively). Following the production of a non-resonant microwave discharge plasma, it undergoes several phases in sequence: breakdown and formation of pre-ionized plasma, increase in linear and nonlinear phases of plasma density, and quasi-stationary stage. Several modes of non-resonant microwave discharge were investigated. In the power-scanning mode in non-resonant microwave discharge, a higher plasma density than that in the constant-power mode is achieved. The maximum average density achieved in the experiments is substantially greater than the critical density for O-wave (ordinary waves) 7.45 ⸱1016 m -3 and can reach the value of 2.5⸱10 18 m -3. .

Abstract

The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory provides polarized proton beams for the investigation of the nucleon spin structure. For polarimetry, carbon-proton and proton-proton scattering is used in the Coulomb nuclear interference region at small momentum transfer ($-t$). Fast polarization measurements of each beam are carried out with carbon fiber targets at several times during an accelerator store. A polarized hydrogen gas jet target is needed for absolute normalization over multiple stores, while the target polarization is constantly monitored in a Breit-Rabi polarimeter. In 2005, the jet polarimeter has been used with both RHIC beams. Abstract

A precise measurement of the analyzing power $A_N$ in proton-proton elastic scattering in the region of 4-momentum transfer squared $0.001 < |t| < 0.032 ({\rm GeV}/c)^2$ has been performed using a polarized atomic hydrogen gas jet target and the 100 GeV/$c$ RHIC proton beam. The interference of the electromagnetic spin-flip amplitude with a hadronic spin-nonflip amplitude is predicted to generate a significant $A_N$ of 4--5%, peaking at $-t \simeq 0.003 ({\rm GeV}/c)^2$. This kinematic region is known as the Coulomb Nuclear Interference region. A possible hadronic spin-flip amplitude modifies this otherwise calculable prediction. Our data are well described by the CNI prediction with the electromagnetic spin-flip alone and do not support the presence of a large hadronic spin-flip amplitude., Comment: 4pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The single transverse spin asymmetry, A_N, of the p-carbon elastic scattering process in the Coulomb Nuclear Interference (CNI) region was measured using an ultra thin carbon target and polarized proton beam in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). In 2004, data were collected to calibrate the p-carbon process at two RHIC energies (24 GeV, 100 GeV). A_N was obtained as a function of momentum transfer -t.
