Abstract

Introduction Prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is of key importance in reducing morbidity, disability and mortality worldwide. Observational studies suggest that digital health interventions can be an effective strategy to reduce cardiovascular (CV) risk. However, evidence from large randomised clinical trials is lacking. Methods and analysis The CV-PREVITAL study is a multicentre, prospective, randomised, controlled, open-label interventional trial designed to compare the effectiveness of an educational and motivational mobile health (mHealth) intervention versus usual care in reducing CV risk. The intervention aims at improving diet, physical activity, sleep quality, psycho-behavioural aspects, as well as promoting smoking cessation and adherence to pharmacological treatment for CV risk factors. The trial aims to enrol approximately 80 000 subjects without overt CVDs referring to general practitioners' offices, community pharmacies or clinics of Scientific Institute for Research, Hospitalization and Health Care (Italian acronym IRCCS) affiliated with the Italian Cardiology Network. All participants are evaluated at baseline and after 12 months to assess the effectiveness of the intervention on short-term endpoints, namely improvement in CV risk score and reduction of major CV risk factors. Beyond the funded life of the study, a long-term (7 years) follow-up is also planned to assess the effectiveness of the intervention on the incidence of major adverse CV events. A series of ancillary studies designed to evaluate the effect of the mHealth intervention on additional risk biomarkers are also performed. Ethics and dissemination This study received ethics approval from the ethics committee of the coordinating centre (Monzino Cardiology Center; R1256/20-CCM 1319) and from all other relevant IRBs and ethics committees. 23. Coronavirus pandemic: An opportunity to study the anthropogenic impact on micro-climate conditions and CaCO3 crystal morphology in the Nerja Cave (SE Spain)

Abstract

Following the declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Spanish Government restricted non-essential movements of all citizens and closed all public spaces, such as the Nerja Cave, until May 31, 2020. This particular condition of the closure of the cave provided a unique opportunity to study the micro-climate conditions and carbonate precipitation in this tourist cave without the presence of visitors. Our results show the significant effect of visitors on the air isotopic signature of the cave and on the genesis of the extensive dissolution features affecting the carbonate crystals formed in the tourist sector of the cave, alerting us to the possible corrosion of the speleothems located there. The movement of visitors within the cave also favours the mobilisation of aerial fungi and bacterial spores and their subsequent sedimentation simultaneously with the abiotic precipitation of carbonates from the drip water. The traces of these biotic elements could be the origin of the micro-perforations previously described in the carbonate crystals formed in the tourist galleries of the cave, but they are subsequently enlarged due to abiotic dissolution of the carbonates through these weaker zones.

Abstract

The glass ionomer cements have been used successfully in dentistry for more than 20 years. A problem of these cements is the release of Al3+ ions to the physiological medium, being able to cause irreversible health problems to the patients. With the purpose of avoiding this problem, cements, from the reaction between the polyacrylic acid and wollastonita (CaSiO3) in a water solution of tartaric acid, have been obtained and characterized. The results have shown that these cements reach compression strength values similar to those of the conventional cements of vitreous polyalqueonate. Additionally, the obtained cements are biocompatibles and bioactives.Los cementos de polialcanoatos o iomómeros de vidrio son materiales que han sido utilizados con éxito durante más de 20 años en trabajos de odontología. Un problema que presentan dichos cementos es la liberación de iones Al3+ al medio fisiológico, lo que puede dar lugar a daños irreversibles en los pacientes. Con el propósito de evitar dicha liberación, se han preparado y caracterizado cementos obtenidos a partir de la reacción entre el ácido poliacrílico y la wollastonita (CaSiO3) en una solución acuosa de ácido tartárico. Los resultados obtenidos han puesto de manifiesto que estos cementos alcanzan resistencias a la compresión similares a las de los cementos de polialcanoato o ionómeros convencionales. Adicionalmente, los cementos resultantes son biocompatibles y bioactivos.

Abstract

Soil salinity reduces root hydraulic conductivity (L) of several plant species. However, how cellular signaling and root hydraulic properties are linked in plants that can cope with water restriction remains unclear. In this work, we exposed the halotolerant species red beet (Beta vulgaris) to increasing concentrations of NaCl to determine the components that might be critical to sustaining the capacity to adjust root hydraulics. Our strategy was to use both hydraulic and cellular approaches in hydroponically grown seedlings during the first osmotic phase of salt stress. Interestingly, L presented a bimodal profile response apart from the magnitude of the imposed salt stress. As well as L, the PIP2-aquaporin profile follows an unphosphorylated/phosphorylated pattern when increasing NaCl concentration while PIP1 aquaporins remain constant. L also shows high sensitivity to cycloheximide. In low NaCl concentrations, L was high and 70 % of its capacity could be attributed to the CHX-inhibited cell-to-cell pathway. More interestingly, roots can maintain a constant spontaneous exudated flow that is independent of the applied NaCl concentration. In conclusion, Beta vulgaris root hydraulic adjustment completely lies in a dominant cell-to-cell pathway that contributes to satisfying plant water demands.

46. The Development of the Puerto Rico Lightning Detection Network for Meteorological Research

Abstract

A land-based Puerto Rico Lightning Detection Network (PR-LDN) dedicated to the academic research of meteorological phenomena has being developed. Five Boltek StormTracker PCI-Receivers with LTS-2 Timestamp Cards with GPS and lightning detectors were integrated to Pentium III PC-workstations running the CentOS linux operating system. The Boltek detector linux driver was compiled under CentOS, modified, and thoroughly tested. These PC-workstations with integrated lightning detectors were installed at five of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) campuses distributed around the island of PR. The PC-workstations are left on permanently in order to monitor lightning activity at all times. Each is networked to their campus network-backbone permitting quasi-instantaneous data transfer to a central server at the UPR-Bayam n campus. Information generated by each lightning detector is managed by a C-program developed by us called the LDN-client. The LDN-client maintains an open connection to the central server operating the LDN-server program where data is sent real-time for analysis and archival. The LDN-client also manages the storing of data on the PC-workstation hard disk. The LDN-server software (also an in-house effort) analyses the data from each client and performs event triangulations. Time-of-arrival (TOA) and related hybrid algorithms, lightning-type and event discriminating routines are also implemented in the LDN-server software. We also have developed software to visually monitor lightning events in real-time from all clients and the triangulated events. We are currently monitoring and studying the spatial, temporal, and type distribution of lightning strikes associated with electrical storms and tropical cyclones in the vicinity of Puerto Rico.

47. Determination of brain injuries in dogs through computed tomography in Lima, Peru

Abstract

El objetivo del presente estudio fue determinar lesiones encefálicas mediante tomografía computarizada (TC) en 71 canes que fueron sometidos al estudio encefálico por recomendación médica entre 2011 y 2015 en Lima, Perú. Los diagnósticos tomográficos fueron relacionados con el sexo, edad, tamaño y raza de cada paciente. Se identificaron 38 diagnósticos tomográficos positivos a lesión encefálica (53.5%). El grupo etario positivo a lesión cerebral más frecuente fue el comprendido entre 1 y 7 años; así como el tamaño de perro mediano. Las lesiones diagnosticadas más frecuentes fueron dilatación ventricular (29%, 11/38), neoformaciones encefálicas (15.8%, 6/38) e hidrocefalia (15.8%, 6/38). La dilatación ventricular se presentó con mayor frecuencia entre 1 y 7 años, en razas Maltés y Poodle, las neoformaciones cerebrales en canes mayores de 7 años y en la raza Labrador, en tanto que la hidrocefalia en canes entre 1 y 7 años, mayormente en Chihuahua y Pug. The aim of this study was to determine encephalic lesions by computed tomography (CT scan) in 71 dogs that were submitted to the encephalic study by medical recommendation between 2011 and 2015 in Lima, Peru. The tomographic diagnoses were related to the sex, age, size and breed of the patients. Thirty-eight positive tomographic diagnoses of brain injury were identified (53.5%). The most frequent positive age group to brain injury was between 1 and 7 years and in medium-size dogs. The most frequent diagnosed lesions were ventricular dilation (29%, 11/38), brain neoformations (15.8%, 6/ 8) and hydrocephalus (15.8%, 6/38). Ventricular dilation occurred more frequently between 1 and 7 years and in Maltese and Poodle breeds, brain neoformations in dogs older than 7 years and in the Labrador breed, while hydrocephalus in dogs between 1 and 7 years old, mostly in Chihuahua and Pug.

50. High wear resistance and better pitting corrosion resistance of AISI 316L stainless steel by a self-protective oxy-nitrocarburizing paste

Abstract

Simultaneous oxidation and nitrocarburizing of AISI 316 SS at 580 °C for 5, 10, 15, and 20 min were studied using self-protecting pastes of sodium cyanate and sodium carbonate. The analytical techniques of XRD and SEM/EDS allowed the characterization of surface modifications. The corrosion resistance was evaluated in a synthetic seawater solution using the cyclic potentiodynamic polarization technique. The cross-section hardness and wear resistance were assessed by Vickers indentation and pin-on-disc, respectively. This thermochemical process formed an oxidized compound layer above a solid nitrogen solution in austenite. The compound layer was composed of intermixed crystals of Fe3O4, ε-Fe3N, and expanded austenite. With increasing relative proportions of the first two phases and decreasing relative proportions of the third phase with increasing treatment time. The balance between the expanded austenite and the chemical composition of the compound layer improved the hardness, the wear-resistant, and the pitting corrosion resistance of the AISI 316L SS surface simultaneously. Oxy-nitrocarburizing at 580 °C for 10 min allowed the best-localized corrosion resistance. However, the sample oxy-nitrocarburized for 20 min reached a more stable passive zone with the highest wear resistance. Self-protective pastes based on sodium cyanates and carbonates allowed the oxy-nitrocarburizing process to consume less salt than the traditional molten salts.
