Abstract

Background : The COVID-19 pandemic increased the worldwide prevalence of metabolic syndrome. The purpose of this study was to assess health behavior adherence during the pandemic in adults who had engaged in a metabolic syndrome management program for at least 6 months. This assessment included an evaluation of health behavior changes, factors influencing adherence, and clinical parameters. The city-wide program was operated by the Seoul Metropolitan Government. Methods : Baseline and follow-up data were compared in 116 participants who engaged in the program for at least 6 months prior to the pandemic. Health behaviors and clinical parameters were examined. Generalized estimating equation analysis was used to identify sociodemographic variables influencing health behavior adherence over time. Abstract

In recent years, transmission rate of access systems and home local area networks (LANs) have already reached the gigabit range, and in the near future, it is thought that even higher transmission rate (of 3-10 Gbps) will be necessary for high-definition video such as 4K and 8K television. As a result, attention has been drawn to optical transmission systems using large-core graded-index plastic optical fiber (GI-POF), which enables high-speed transmission with a thin diameter and good handling characteristics. This report describes an optical module for high-speed transmission, suitable for large-core GI-POF, which can be inexpensively supplied by using a new structure and assembly method employing die bonder mounting precision and a glass epoxy board. Abstract

The viability of autologous adrenal medullary transplants was evaluated using 125I-meta-iodobenzyl guanidine (MIBG), an adrenal medullary scanning agent. Bilateral cavities in the caudate nuclei were made stereotaxically in Wistar rats. One week later, the left adrenal medulla was resected by microsurgery, followed by reoperation of the cranium and implantation of a 0.5-1.0 mm diameter fragment of the adrenal medulla into the right caudate nucleus. Six weeks after the second operation, MIBG was administered intravenously. Specimens from both cerebral hemispheres, from the right adrenal medulla and blood were analysed by radioactivity counting. The radioactivity present in the blood of the transplanted group of 11.40 +/- 2.35 cpm mg-1 (mean +/- S.E.M.) was significantly higher than in the control group of 4.97 +/- 1.16 cpm mg-1 (P < 0.05). Radioactivity present in the right hemisphere of the transplanted group was 0.66 +/- 0.03 cpm mg-1, also significantly higher than in the control group which was 0.47 +/- 0.04 cpm mg-1 (P < 0.01). Autoradiography revealed increased radioactivity in the area of the transplants, which was also confirmed histologically.

Item does not contain fulltext, OBJECT: In this study the authors evaluate the safety, efficacy, and indications for endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) in patients with a history of subarachnoid hemorrhage or intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) and/or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) infection. METHODS: The charts of 101 patients from seven international medical centers were retrospectively reviewed; 46 patients had a history of hemorrhage, 42 had a history of CSF infection, and 13 had a history of both disorders. All patients experienced third ventricular hydrocephalus before endoscopy. The success rate for treatment in these three groups was 60.9, 64.3, and 23.1%, respectively. The follow-up period in successfully treated patients ranged from 0.6 to 10 years. Relatively minor complications were observed in 15 patients (14.9%), and there were no deaths. A higher rate of treatment failure was associated with three factors: classification in the combined infection/hemorrhage group, premature birth in the posthemorrhage group, and younger age in the postinfection group. A higher success rate was associated with a history of ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt placement before ETV in the posthemorrhage group, even among those who had been born prematurely, who were otherwise more prone to treatment failure. The 13 premature infants who had suffered an IVH and who had undergone VP shunt placement before ETV had a 100% success rate. The procedure was also successful in nine of 10 patients with primary aqueductal stenosis. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with obstructive hydrocephalus and a history of either hemorrhage or infection may be good candidates for ETV, with safety and success rates comparable with those in more general series of patients. Patients who have sustained both hemorrhage and infection are poor candidates for ETV, except in selected cases and as a treatment of last resort.
