We present a catalog of optical and infrared identifications (ID) of X-ray sources in the AKARI North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) Deep field detected with Chandra covering $\sim 0.34\,{\rm deg^{2}}$ with 0.5-2 keV flux limits ranging $\sim 2 \mathrm{-} 20\times 10^{-16}\,{\rm erg\,s^{-1}\,cm^{-2}}$. The optical/near-infrared counterparts of the X-ray sources are taken from our Hyper Suprime Cam (HSC)/Subaru and Wide-Field InfraRed Camera (WIRCam)/Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) data because these have much more accurate source positions due to their spatial resolution than that of {Chandra} and longer wavelength infrared data. We concentrate our identifications in the HSC $g$ band and WIRCam $K_{\rm s}$ band-based catalogs. To select the best counterpart, we utilize a novel extension of the likelihood-ratio (LR) analysis, where we use the X-ray flux as well as $g - K_{\rm s}$ colors to calculate the likelihood ratio. Spectroscopic and photometric redshifts of the counterparts are summarized. Also, simple X-ray spectroscopy is made on the sources with sufficient source counts. We present the resulting catalog in an electronic form. The main ID catalog contains 403 X-ray sources and includes X-ray fluxes, luminosities, $g$ and $K_{\rm s}$ band magnitudes, redshifts, and their sources, optical spectroscopic properties, as well as intrinsic absorption column densities and power-law indices from simple X-ray spectroscopy. The identified X-ray sources include 27 Milky-Way objects, 57 type I AGNs, 131 other AGNs, and 15 galaxies. The catalog serves as a basis for further investigations of the properties of the X-ray and near-infrared sources in this field. We present ALMA Band 6 observations of the CO(2-1), HCN(3-2), and HCO$^{+}$(3-2) lines in the nearby radio galaxy / brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) of NGC 1275 with the spatial resolution of $\sim20$ pc. In the previous observations, CO(2-1) emission was detected as radial filaments lying in the east-west direction. We resolved the inner filament and found that the filament cannot be represented by a simple infalling stream both morphologically and kinematically. The observed complex nature of the filament resembles the cold gas structure predicted by recent numerical simulations of cold chaotic accretion. A crude estimate suggests that the accretion rate of the cold gas can be higher than that of hot gas. Within the central 100 pc, we detected a rotational disk of the molecular gas whose mass is $\sim10^{8} M_{\sun}$. This is the first evidence of the presence of massive cold gas disk on this spatial scale for BCGs. The disk rotation axis is approximately consistent with the axis of the radio jet on subpc scales. This probably suggests that the cold gas disk is physically connected to the innermost accretion disk which is responsible for jet launching. We also detected absorption features in the HCN(3-2) and HCO$^{+}$(3-2) spectra against the radio continuum emission mostly radiated by $\sim1.2$-pc size jet. The absorption features are blue-shifted from the systemic velocity by $\sim$300-600~km~s$^{-1}$, which suggests the presence of outflowing gas from the active galactic nucleus (AGN). We discuss the relation of the AGN feeding with cold accretion, the origin of blue-shifted absorption, and estimate of black hole mass using the molecular gas dynamics., Comment: Version 2 (accepted version). 18 pages, 16 figures. Deep MIR surveys have revealed numerous strongly star-forming galaxies at redshift z~<2. Their MIR fluxes are produced by a combination of continuum and PAH emission features. The PAH features can dominate the total MIR flux, but are difficult to measure without spectroscopy. We aim to study star-forming galaxies by using a blind spectroscopic survey at MIR wavelengths to understand evolution of their star formation rate (SFR) and specific SFR up to z~=0.5, by paying particular attention to their PAH properties. We conducted a low-resolution (R~=50) slitless spectroscopic survey at 5-13um of 9um flux-selected sources (>0.3 mJy) around the North Ecliptic Pole with the Infrared Camera (IRC) onboard AKARI. After removing 11 AGN candidates by using the IRC photometry, we identified 48 PAH galaxies with PAH 6.2, 7.7, and 8.6um features at z<0.5. The rest-frame optical-MIR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) based on CFHT and AKARI/IRC imaging covering 0.37-18um were produced, and analysed in conjunction with the PAH spectroscopy. We defined the PAH enhancement by using the luminosity ratio of the 7.7um PAH feature over the 3.5um stellar component of the SEDs. The rest-frame SEDs of all PAH galaxies have a universal shape with stellar and 7.7um bumps, except that the PAH enhancement significantly varies as a function of the PAH luminosities. We identified a PAH-enhanced population at z~>0.35, whose SEDs and luminosities are typical of luminous infrared galaxies. They show particularly larger PAH enhancement at high luminosity, implying that they are vigorous star-forming galaxies with elevated specific SFR. Our composite starburst model that combines a very young and optically very thick starburst with a very old population can successfully reproduce most of their SED characteristics, although we could not confirm this optically thick component from our spectral analysis., Comment: 61 pages, 24 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We present AKARI 2.5-5um spectra of 145 local luminous infrared galaxies in the Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey. In all of the spectra, we measure the line fluxes and EQWs of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) at 3.3um and the hydrogen recombination line Br-alpha, with apertures matched to the slit sizes of the Spitzer spectrograph and with an aperture covering ~95% of the total flux in the AKARI 2D spectra. The star formation rates (SFRs) derived from Br-alpha measured in the latter aperture agree well with SFRs(LIR), when the dust extinction correction is adopted based on the 9.7um absorption feature. Together with the Spitzer spectra, we are able to compare the 3.3 and 6.2um PAH features, the two most commonly used near/mid-IR indicators of starburst (SB) or active galactic nucleus (AGN) dominated galaxies. We find that the 3.3 and 6.2um PAH EQWs do not follow a linear correlation and at least 1/3 of galaxies classified as AGN-dominated using 3.3um PAH are classified as starbursts based on 6.2um PAH. These galaxies have a bluer continuum slope than galaxies that are indicated to be SB-dominated by both PAH features. The bluer continuum emission suggests that their continuum is dominated by stellar emission rather than hot dust. We also find that the median Spitzer spectra of these sources are remarkably similar to the pure SB-dominated sources indicated by high PAH EQWs in both 3.3 and 6.2um. We propose a revised SB/AGN diagnostic diagram using 2-5um data. We also use the AKARI and Spitzer spectra to examine the performance of our new diagnostics and to estimate 3.3um PAH fluxes using the JWST photometric bands in 03.5, because the rest of the features at longer wavelengths fall outside the JWST wavelength coverage., Comment: 13 pages (without appendices), 12 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A

The recent updates of the North Ecliptic Pole deep (0.5~deg$^2$, NEP-Deep) multi-wavelength survey covering from X-ray to radio-wave is presented. The NEP-Deep provides us with several thousands of 15~$\mu$m or 18~$\mu$m selected sample of galaxies, which is the largest sample ever made at this wavelengths. A continuous filter coverage in the mid-infrared wavelength (7, 9, 11, 15, 18, and 24~$\mu$m) is unique and vital to diagnose the contributions from starbursts and AGNs in the galaxies out to $z$=2.The new goal of the project is to resolve the nature of the cosmic star formation history at the violent epoch (e.g. $z$=1--2), and to find a clue to understand its decline from $z$=1 to present universe by utilizing the unique power of the multi-wavelength survey. We perform revised spectral calibrations for the AKARI near-infrared grism to quantitatively correct for the effect of the wavelength-dependent refractive index. The near-infrared grism covering the wavelength range of 2.5--5.0 micron with a spectral resolving power of 120 at 3.6 micron, is found to be contaminated by second-order light at wavelengths longer than 4.9 micron which is especially serious for red objects. First, we present the wavelength calibration considering the refractive index of the grism as a function of the wavelength for the first time. We find that the previous solution is positively shifted by up to 0.01 micron compared with the revised wavelengths at 2.5--5.0 micron. In addition, we demonstrate that second-order contamination occurs even with a perfect order-sorting filter owing to the wavelength dependence of the refractive index. Second, the spectral responses of the system from the first- and second-order light are simultaneously obtained from two types of standard objects with different colors. The response from the second-order light suggests leakage of the order-sorting filter below 2.5 micron. The relations between the output of the detector and the intensities of the first- and second-order light are formalized by a matrix equation that combines the two orders. The removal of the contaminating second-order light can be achieved by solving the matrix equation. The new calibration extends the available spectral coverage of the grism mode from 4.9 micron up to 5.0 micron. We present a method of selection of 24~$\mu$m galaxies from the AKARI North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) Deep Field down to $150 \mbox{ }\mu$Jy and measurements of their two-point correlation function. We aim to associate various 24 $\mu$m selected galaxy populations with present day galaxies and to investigate the impact of their environment on the direction of their subsequent evolution. We discuss using of Support Vector Machines (SVM) algorithm applied to infrared photometric data to perform star-galaxy separation, in which we achieve an accuracy higher than 80\%. The photometric redshift information, obtained through the CIGALE code, is used to explore the redshift dependence of the correlation function parameter ($r_{0}$) as well as the linear bias evolution. This parameter relates galaxy distribution to the one of the underlying dark matter. We connect the investigated sources to their potential local descendants through a simplified model of the clustering evolution without interactions. We observe two different populations of star-forming galaxies, at $z_{med}\sim 0.25$, $z_{med}\sim 0.9$. Measurements of total infrared luminosities ($L_{TIR}$) show that the sample at $z_{med}\sim 0.25$ is composed mostly of local star-forming galaxies, while the sample at $z_{med}\sim0.9$ is composed of luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) with $L_{TIR}\sim 10^{11.62}L_{\odot}$. We find that dark halo mass is not necessarily correlated with the $L_{TIR}$: for subsamples with $L_{TIR}= 10^{11.15} L_{\odot}$ at $z_{med}\sim 0.7$ we observe a higher clustering length ($r_{0}=6.21\pm0.78$ $[h^{-1} \mbox{Mpc}]$) than for a subsample with mean $L_{TIR}=10^{11.84} L_{\odot}$ at $z_{med}\sim1.1$ ($r_{0}=5.86\pm0.69$ $h^{-1} \mbox{Mpc}$). We find that galaxies at $z_{med}\sim 0.9$ can be ancestors of present day $L_{*}$ early type galaxies, which exhibit a very high $r_{0}\sim 8$~$h^{-1} \mbox{Mpc}$., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

(Abridged) We aim to study the evolution of dust attenuation in galaxies selected in the IR in the redshift range in which they are known to dominate the star formation activity in the universe. The comparison with other measurements of dust attenuation in samples selected using different criteria will give us a global picture of the attenuation at work in star-forming galaxies and its evolution with redshift. Using multiple filters of IRC instrument, we selected more than 4000 galaxies from their rest-frame emission at 8 microns, from z~0.2 to 2$. We built SEDs from the rest-frame UV to the far-IR by adding data in the optical-NIR and from GALEX and Herschel surveys. We fit SEDs with the physically-motivated code CIGALE. We test different templates for AGNs and recipes for dust attenuation and estimate stellar masses, SFRs, amount of dust attenuation, and AGN contribution to the total IR luminosity. The AGN contribution to the total IR luminosity is found to be on average approximately 10% with a slight increase with redshift. Dust attenuation in galaxies dominating the IR luminosity function is found to increase from z=0 to z=1 and to remain almost constant from z=1 to z=1.5. Conversely, when galaxies are selected at a fixed IR luminosity, their dust attenuation slightly decreases as redshift increases but with a large dispersion. The attenuation in our mid-IR selected sample is found ~ 2 mag higher than that found globally in the universe or in UV and Halpha line selections in the same redshift range. This difference is well explained by an increase of dust attenuation with the stellar mass, in global agreement with other recent studies. We present the first galaxy counts at 18 microns using the Japanese AKARI satellite's survey at the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP), produced from the images from the NEP-Deep and NEP-Wide surveys covering 0.6 and 5.8 square degrees respectively. We describe a procedure using a point source filtering algorithm to remove background structure and a minimum variance method for our source extraction and photometry that delivers the optimum signal to noise for our extracted sources, confirming this by comparison with standard photometry methods. The final source counts are complete and reliable over three orders of magnitude in flux density, resulting in sensitivities (80 percent completeness) of 0.15mJy and 0.3mJy for the NEP-Deep and NEP-Wide surveys respectively, a factor of 1.3 deeper than previous catalogues constructed from this field. The differential source counts exhibit a characteristic upturn from Euclidean expectations at around a milliJansky and a corresponding evolutionary bump between 0.2-0.4 mJy consistent with previous mid-infrared surveys with ISO and Spitzer at 15 and 24 microns. We compare our results with galaxy evolution models confirming the striking divergence from the non-evolving scenario. The models and observations are in broad agreement implying that the source counts are consistent with a strongly evolving population of luminous infrared galaxies at redshifts higher than unity. Integrating our source counts down to the limit of the NEP survey at the 150 microJy level we calculate that AKARI has resolved approximately 55 percent of the 18 micron cosmic infrared background relative to the predictions of contemporary source count models., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

We present our new deep optical imaging and long-slit spectroscopy for Arp 220 that is the archetypical ULIRG in the local universe. Our sensitive Ha imaging has newly revealed large-scale, Ha absorption, i.e., post-starburst regions in this merger; one is found in the eastern superbubble and the other is in the two tidal tails that are clearly reveled in our deep optical imaging. The size of Ha absorption region in the eastern bubble is 5 kpc x 7.5 kpc and the observed Ha equivalent widths are ~2 A +- 0.2 A. The sizes of the northern and southern Ha-absorption tidal tails are ~5 kpc x 10 kpc and ~6 kpc x 20 kpc, respectively. The observed Ha equivalent widths range from 4 A to 7 A. In order to explain the presence of the two post-starburst tails, we suggest a possible multiple-merger scenario for Arp 220 in which two post-starburst disk-like structures merged into one, and then caused the two tails. This favors that Arp 220 is a multiple merging system composed of four or more galaxies, arising from a compact group of galaxies. Context: It is crucial to develop a method for classifying objects detected in deep surveys at infrared wavelengths. We specifically need a method to separate galaxies from stars using only the infrared information to study the properties of galaxies, e.g., to estimate the angular correlation function, without introducing any additional bias. Aims. We aim to separate stars and galaxies in the data from the AKARI North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) Deep survey collected in nine AKARI / IRC bands from 2 to 24 {\mu}m that cover the near- and mid-infrared wavelengths (hereafter NIR and MIR). We plan to estimate the correlation function for NIR and MIR galaxies from a sample selected according to our criteria in future research. Methods: We used support vector machines (SVM) to study the distribution of stars and galaxies in the AKARIs multicolor space. We defined the training samples of these objects by calculating their infrared stellarity parameter (sgc). We created the most efficient classifier and then tested it on the whole sample. We confirmed the developed separation with auxiliary optical data obtained by the Subaru telescope and by creating Euclidean normalized number count plots. Results: We obtain a 90% accuracy in pinpointing galaxies and 98% accuracy for stars in infrared multicolor space with the infrared SVM classifier. The source counts and comparison with the optical data (with a consistency of 65% for selecting stars and 96% for galaxies) confirm that our star/galaxy separation methods are reliable. Conclusions: The infrared classifier derived with the SVM method based on infrared sgc- selected training samples proves to be very efficient and accurate in selecting stars and galaxies in deep surveys at infrared wavelengths carried out without any previous target object selection., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

We present a new catalogue of mid-IR sources using the AKARI NEP-Deep survey. The InfraRed Camera (IRC) onboard AKARI has a comprehensive mid-IR wavelength coverage with 9 photometric bands at 2 - 24 micron. We utilized all of these bands to cover a nearly circular area adjacent to the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP). We designed the catalogue to include most of sources detected in 7, 9, 11, 15 and 18 micron bands, and found 7284 sources in a 0.67 deg^2 area. From our simulations, we estimate that the catalogue is ~80 per cent complete to 200 micro Jy at 15 - 18 micron, and ~10 per cent of sources are missed, owing to source blending. Star-galaxy separation is conducted using only AKARI photometry, as a result of which 10 per cent of catalogued sources are found to be stars. The number counts at 11, 15, 18, and 24 micron are presented for both stars and galaxies. A drastic increase in the source density is found in between 11 and 15 micron at the flux level of ~300 micro Jy. This is likely due to the redshifted PAH emission at 8 micron, given our rough estimate of redshifts from an AKARI colour-colour plot. We present a new sample of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) identified using the catalog of the AKARI Mid-infrared(MIR) All-Sky Survey. Our MIR search has an advantage in detecting AGNs that are obscured at optical wavelengths due to extinction. We first selected AKARI 9micron excess sources with F(9micron)/F(K_S)>2 where K_S magnitudes were taken from the Two Micron All Sky Survey. We then obtained follow-up near-infrared spectroscopy with the AKARI/IRC, to confirm that the excess is caused by hot dust. We also obtained optical spectroscopy with the Kast Double Spectrograph on the Shane 3-m telescope at Lick Observatory. On the basis of on these observations, we detected hot dust with a characteristic temperature of ~500K in two luminous infrared galaxies. The hot dust is suspected to be associated with AGNs that exhibit their nonstellar activity not in the optical, but in the near- and mid-infrared bands, i.e., they harbor buried AGNs. The host galaxy stellar masses of 4-6 x 10^9 M_sun are small compared with the hosts in optically-selected AGN populations. These objects were missed by previous surveys, demonstrating the power of the AKARI MIR All-Sky Survey to widen AGN searches to include more heavily obscured objects. The edge-on starburst galaxy M82 exhibits complicated distributions of gaseous materials in its halo, which include ionized superwinds driven by nuclear starbursts, neutral materials entrained by the superwinds, and large-scale neutral streamers probably caused by a past tidal interaction with M81. We investigate detailed distributions of dust grains and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) around M82 to understand their interplay with the gaseous components. We performed mid- (MIR) and far-infrared (FIR) observations of M82 with the Infrared Camera and Far-Infrared Surveyor on board AKARI. We obtain new MIR and FIR images of M82, which reveal both faint extended emission in the halo and very bright emission in the center with signal dynamic ranges as large as five and three orders of magnitude for the MIR and FIR, respectively. We detect MIR and FIR emission in the regions far away from the disk of the galaxy, reflecting the presence of dust and PAHs in the halo of M82. We find that the dust and PAHs are contained in both ionized and neutral gas components, implying that they have been expelled into the halo of M82 by both starbursts and galaxy interaction. In particular, we obtain a tight correlation between the PAH and H$\alpha$ emission, which provides evidence that the PAHs are well mixed in the ionized superwind gas and outflowing from the disk., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Using an AKARI multi-wavelength mid-infrared (IR) survey, we identify luminous starburst galaxies at z> 0.5 based on the PAH luminosity, and investigate the nature of these PAH-selected starbursts. An extragalactic survey with AKARI towards the north ecliptic pole (NEP), the NEP-Deep survey, is unique in terms of a comprehensive wavelength coverage from 2 to 24um using all 9 photometric bands of the InfraRed Camera (IRC). This survey allows us to photometrically identify galaxies whose mid-IR emission is clearly dominated by PAHs. We propose a single colour selection method to identify such galaxies, using two mid-IR flux ratios at 11-to-7um and 15-to-9um (PAH-to-continuum flux ratio in the rest-frame), which are useful to identify starburst galaxies at z~0.5 and 1, respectively. We perform a fitting of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from optical to mid-IR wavelengths, using an evolutionary starburst model with a proper treatment of radiative transfer (SBURT), in order to investigate their nature. The SBURT model reproduces observed optical-to-mid-IR SEDs of more than a half of PAH-selected galaxies. Based on the 8um luminosity, we find ultra luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) among PAH-selected galaxies. Their PAH luminosity is higher than local ULIRGs with a similar luminosity, and the PAH-to-total IR luminosity ratio is consistent with that of less luminous starburst galaxies. They are a unique galaxy population at high redshifts and we call these PAH-selected ULIRGs "PAH-luminous" galaxies. Although they are not as massive as submillimetre galaxies at z~2, they have the stellar mass of >3x10^{10} Msun and therefore moderately massive., Comment: Accepted to A&A, 15 pages, 14 figures

We aim to reveal environmental dependence of infrared luminosity functions (IR LFs) of galaxies at z~0.8 using the AKARI satellite. We construct restframe 8um IR LFs in the cluster region RXJ1716.4+6708 at z=0.81, and compare them with a blank field using the AKARI North Ecliptic Pole deep field data at the same redshift. AKARI's wide field of view (10'x10') is suitable to investigate wide range of galaxy environments. AKARI's 15um filter is advantageous here since it directly probes restframe 8um at z~0.8, without relying on a large extrapolation based on a SED fit, which was the largest uncertainty in previous work. We have found that cluster IR LFs at restframe 8um have a factor of 2.4 smaller L^* and a steeper faint-end slope than that of the field. Confirming this trend, we also found that faint-end slopes of the cluster LFs becomes flatter and flatter with decreasing local galaxy density. These changes in LFs cannot be explained by a simple infall of field galaxy population into a cluster. Dust-obscured star-formation becomes much more important with increasing intensity, and increasing redshift. We aim to reveal cosmic star-formation history obscured by dust using deep infrared observation with the AKARI. We construct restframe 8um, 12um, and total infrared (TIR) luminosity functions (LFs) at 0.15

We present rest-frame optical/near-infrared spectra of the gravitationally lense d quasar APM 08279+5255 at $z=3.91$ that has been taken using the Infrared Camera (IRC) onboard the AKARI infrared satellite. The observed continuum consists of two components; a power-law component dominating optical wavelengths which is the direct light from the central source and thermal emission dominating near-infrared wavelengths which is attributed to the emission from hot dust in the circumnuclear region. The thermal emission well represents optically thick emission by hot dust at T ~ 1300K with tau(2micron)> 2 and apparent mass, M(hot) >10 M_sun. Thus, our observations directly detected the optically thick region of hot dust in APM 08279+5255. HI recombination lines of H_alpha(0.656micron), Pa_alpha(1.875micron), and Pa_beta(1.282micron) are clearly detected at 3.2, 6.3, and 9.3 micron. Simulations with the photoionization models suggest that APM 08279+5255 has BLR(Broad Line Region) clouds characterized by log n_{H} ~ 12- 14 for the gas density, log U ~ -2 - -6$ for the ionization parameter, and E(B-V) ~ 0.3-0.6$for the broad line region. Thus, optically thick emission of hot dust support an idea on non-spherical distribution of dust near the central source, consistent with the Active Galactic Nuclei model with the dust torus. The temperature of hot dust and flux ratios of these HI lines are similar to those observed in low-redshift quasars. There are significant time-variations in the HI lines, which are probably caused by variations in the brightness of the central source., Comment: ApJ, in press

We present a theoretical model for Type Ib supernova (SN) 2006jc. We calculate the evolution of the progenitor star, hydrodynamics and nucleosynthesis of the SN explosion, and the SN bolometric light curve (LC). The synthetic bolometric LC is compared with the observed bolometric LC constructed by integrating the UV, optical, near-infrared (NIR), and mid-infrared (MIR) fluxes. The progenitor is assumed to be as massive as $40M_\odot$ on the zero-age main-sequence. The star undergoes extensive mass loss to reduce its mass down to as small as $6.9M_\odot$, thus becoming a WCO Wolf-Rayet star. The WCO star model has a thick carbon-rich layer, in which amorphous carbon grains can be formed. This could explain the NIR brightening and the dust feature seen in the MIR spectrum. We suggest that the progenitor of SN 2006jc is a WCO Wolf-Rayet star having undergone strong mass loss and such massive stars are the important sites of dust formation. We derive the parameters of the explosion model in order to reproduce the bolometric LC of SN 2006jc by the radioactive decays: the ejecta mass $4.9M_\odot$, hypernova-like explosion energy $10^{52}$ ergs, and ejected $^{56}$Ni mass $0.22M_\odot$. We also calculate the circumstellar interaction and find that a CSM with a flat density structure is required to reproduce the X-ray LC of SN 2006jc. This suggests a drastic change of the mass-loss rate and/or the wind velocity that is consistent with the past luminous blue variable (LBV)-like event., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures. We present our latest results on near- to mid- infrared observation of SN2006jc at 200 days after the discovery using the Infrared Camera (IRC) on board $AKARI$. The near-infrared (2--5$\mu$m) spectrum of SN2006jc is obtained for the first time and is found to be well interpreted in terms of the thermal emission from amorphous carbon of 800$\pm 10$K with the mass of $6.9\pm 0.5 \times 10^{-5}M_{\odot}$ that was formed in the supernova ejecta. This dust mass newly formed in the ejecta of SN 2006jc is in a range similar to those obtained for other several dust forming core collapse supernovae based on recent observations (i.e., $10^{-3}$--$10^{-5}$$M_{\odot}$). Mid-infrared photometric data with {\it{AKARI}}/IRC MIR-S/S7, S9W, and S11 bands have shown excess emission over the thermal emission by hot amorphous carbon of 800K. This mid-infrared excess emission is likely to be accounted for by the emission from warm amorphous carbon dust of 320$\pm 10$K with the mass of 2.7$^{+0.7}_{-0.5} \times 10^{-3}M_{\odot}$ rather than by the band emission of astronomical silicate and/or silica grains. This warm amorphous carbon dust is expected to have been formed in the mass loss wind associated with the Wolf-Rayet stellar activity before the SN explosion. Our result suggests that a significant amount of dust is condensed in the mass loss wind prior to the SN explosion. The results of a world-wide coordinated observational campaign on the broad-lined Type Ic SN 2003jd are presented. In total, 74 photometric data points and 26 spectra were collected using 11 different telescopes. SN 2003jd is one of the most luminous SN Ic ever observed. A comparison with other Type Ic supernovae (SNe Ic) confirms that SN 2003jd represents an intermediate case between broad-line events (2002ap, 2006aj), and highly energetic SNe (1997ef, 1998bw, 2003dh, 2003lw), with an ejected mass of M_{ej} = 3.0 +/- 1 Mo and a kinetic energy of E_{k}(tot) = 7_{-2}^{+3} 10^{51} erg. SN 2003jd is similar to SN 1998bw in terms of overall luminosity, but it is closer to SNe 2006aj and 2002ap in terms of light-curve shape and spectral evolution. The comparison with other SNe Ic, suggests that the V-band light curves of SNe Ic can be partially homogenized by introducing a time stretch factor. Finally, due to the similarity of SN 2003jd to the SN 2006aj/XRF 060218 event, we discuss the possible connection of SN 2003jd with a GRB., Comment: 19 pages, 19 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

AKARI, the first Japanese satellite dedicated to infrared astronomy, was launched on 2006 February 21, and started observations in May of the same year. AKARI has a 68.5 cm cooled telescope, together with two focal-plane instruments, which survey the sky in six wavelength bands from the mid- to far-infrared. The instruments also have the capability for imaging and spectroscopy in the wavelength range 2 - 180 micron in the pointed observation mode, occasionally inserted into the continuous survey operation. The in-orbit cryogen lifetime is expected to be one and a half years. The All-Sky Survey will cover more than 90 percent of the whole sky with higher spatial resolution and wider wavelength coverage than that of the previous IRAS all-sky survey. Point source catalogues of the All-Sky Survey will be released to the astronomical community. The pointed observations will be used for deep surveys of selected sky areas and systematic observations of important astronomical targets. The nebular spectra of the broad-lined, SN 1998bw-like Type Ic SN 2002ap are studied by means of synthetic spectra. Two different modelling techniques are employed. In one technique, the SN ejecta are treated as a single zone, while in the other a density and abundance distribution in velocity is used from an explosion model. In both cases, heating caused by gamma-ray and positron deposition is computed (in the latter case using a Monte Carlo technique to describe the propagation of gamma-rays and positrons), as is cooling via forbidden-line emission. The results are compared, and although general agreement is found, the stratified models are shown to reproduce the observed line profiles much more accurately than the single-zone model. The explosion produced ~ 0.1 Msun of 56Ni. The distribution in velocity of the various elements is in agreement with that obtained from the early-time models, which indicated an ejected mass of ~ 2.5 Msun with a kinetic energy of 4 x 10^{51} erg. Nebular spectroscopy confirms that most of the ejected mass (~ 1.2 Msun) was oxygen. The presence of an oxygen-rich inner core, combined with that of 56Ni at high velocities as deduced from early-time models, suggests that the explosion was asymmetric, especially in the inner part., Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures, 2 Tables. The Infrared Camera (IRC) is one of two focal-plane instruments on the AKARI satellite. It is designed for wide-field deep imaging and low-resolution spectroscopy in the near- to mid-infrared (1.8--26.5um) in the pointed observation mode of AKARI. IRC is also operated in the survey mode to make an all-sky survey at 9 and 18um. It comprises three channels. The NIR channel (1.8--5.5um) employs a 512 x 412 InSb array, whereas both the MIR-S (4.6--13.4um) and MIR-L (12.6--26.5um) channels use 256 x 256 Si:As impurity band conduction arrays. Each of the three channels has a field-of-view of about 10' x 10' and are operated simultaneously. The NIR and MIR-S share the same field-of-view by virtue of a beam splitter. The MIR-L observes the sky about $25' away from the NIR/MIR-S field-of-view. IRC gives us deep insights into the formation and evolution of galaxies, the evolution of planetary disks, the process of star-formation, the properties of interstellar matter under various physical conditions, and the nature and evolution of solar system objects. The in-flight performance of IRC has been confirmed to be in agreement with the pre-flight expectation. We present an initial analysis of AKARI 18um-selected galaxies using all 9 photometric bands at 2-24um available in the InfraRed Camera (IRC), in order to demonstrate new capabilities of AKARI cosmological surveys. We detected 72 sources at 18um in an area of 50.2 arcmin^2 in the AKARI/IRC monitor field towards the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP). From this sample, 25 galaxies with probable redshifts z>~ 0.5 are selected with a single colour cut (N2-N3>0.1) for a detailed SED analysis with ground-based BVRi'z'JK data. Using an SED radiative transfer model of starbursts covering the wavelength range UV -- submm, we derive photometric redshifts from the optical-MIR SEDs of 18um-selected galaxies. From the best-fit SED models, we show that the IRC all-band photometry is capable of tracing the steep rise in flux at the blue side of the PAH 6.2um emission feature. This indicates that the IRC all-band photometry is useful to constrain the redshift of infrared galaxies, specifically for dusty galaxies with a less prominent 4000A break. Also, we find that the flux dip between the PAH 7.7 and 11.2um emission feature is recognizable in the observed SEDs of galaxies at z~1. By using such a colour anomaly due to the PAH and silicate absorption features, unique samples of ULIRGs at z~1, `silicate-break' galaxies, can be constructed from large cosmological surveys of AKARI towards the NEP, i.e. the NEP-Deep and NEP-Wide survey. This pilot study suggests the possibility of detecting many interesting galaxy properties in the NEP-Deep and Wide surveys, such as a systematic difference in SEDs between high- and low-z ULIRGs, and a large variation of the PAH inter-band strength ratio in galaxies at high redshifts. Type Ic supernovae, the explosions following the core collapse of massive stars that have previously lost their hydrogen and helium envelopes, are particularly interesting because of the link with long-duration gamma-ray bursts. Although indications exist that these explosions are aspherical, direct evidence has still been missing. Late-time observations of SN 2003jd, a luminous Type Ic supernova, provide such evidence. Recent Subaru and Keck spectra reveal double-peaked profiles in the nebular lines of neutral oxygen and magnesium. These profiles are different from those of known Type Ic supernovae, with or without a gamma-ray burst, and they can be understood if SN 2003jd was an aspherical, axisymmetric explosion viewed from near the equatorial plane. Optical spectroscopy of the Type Ia supernova SN 2002ic obtained on 2003 June 27.6 UT, i.e., about 222 rest-frame days after explosion, is presented. Strong H emission indicates an interaction between the expanding SN ejecta and an H-rich circumstellar medium (CSM). The spectrum of SN 2002ic resembles those of SNe 1997cy and 1999E. The three SNe also have similar luminosities, suggesting that they are the same phenomenon and that the CSM is also similar. We propose a new classification, Type IIa SNe, for these events. The observed line profiles and line ratios are measured and discussed within the ejecta-CSM interaction scenario. The emission in H Balmer, [O III], and He I lines, and in permitted Fe II blends, resembles the spectra of the Type IIn SN 1987F and of Seyfert 1 galaxies. A high-density, clumpy CSM is inferred. Strong, very broad [Ca II]/Ca II and [O I]/O I missions imply that not all the outer SN ejecta were decelerated in the interaction, suggesting that the CSM is aspherical., Comment: 13 pages including 4 figures, aastex preprint style. We report here the results of deep optical spectroscopy of the very extended emission-line region (VEELR) found serendipitously around the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 4388 in the Virgo cluster using the Subaru Telescope. The H-alpha recession velocities of most of the filaments of the region observed are highly blue-shifted with respect to the systemic velocity of the galaxy. The velocity field is complicated, and from the kinematic and morphological points of view, there seem to be several streams of filaments: low velocity (v = -100 km/s) filaments, high velocity (v = -300 km/s) filaments, and a very high velocity (v > -500 km/s) cloud complex. The emission-line ratios of the VEELR filaments are well explained by power-law photoionization models with solar abundances, suggesting that the Seyfert nucleus of NGC 4388 is the dominant ionization source of the VEELR and that the VEELR gas has moderate metallicity. In addition to photoionization, shock heating probably contributes to the ionization of the gas. In particular, the filaments outside the ionization cone of the Seyfert nucleus are mainly excited by shocks. We conclude that the VEELR was formerly the disk gas of NGC 4388, which has been stripped by ram pressure due to the interaction between the hot intra-cluster medium (ICM) and the galaxy. The velocity field and the morphology of the VEELR closely resemble snapshots from some numerical simulations of this process. In the case of NGC 4388, the ram pressure-stripped gas, which is normally seen as extended HI filaments, happens to be exposed and ionized by the radiation from the AGN, and so can be seen as optical emission-line gas., Comment: 20 pages, LaTeX, Accepted by Astron. Spectroscopic and spectropolarimetric observations of SN 2003dh/GRB 030329 obtained in 2003 May using the Subaru 8.2 m telescope are presented. The properties of the SN are investigated through a comparison with spectra of the Type Ic hypernovae SNe 1997ef and 1998bw. (Hypernovae being a tentatively defined class of SNe with very broad absorption features: these features suggest a large velocity of the ejected material and possibly a large explosion kinetic energy.) Comparison with spectra of other hypernovae shows that the spectrum of SN 2003dh obtained on 2003 May 8 and 9, i.e., 34-35 rest-frame days after the GRB (for z=0.1685), are similar to those of SN 1997ef obtained ~34-42 days after the fiducial time of explosion of that SN. The match with SN 1998bw spectra is not as good (at rest 7300-8000 A, but again spectra obtained ~33-43 days after GRB 980425 are preferred. This indicates that the SN may have intermediate properties between SNe 1997ef and 1998bw. Based on the analogy with the other hypernovae, the time of explosion of SN 2003dh is then constrained to be between -8 and +2 days of the GRB. The Si and O P-Cygni lines of SN 2003dh seem comparable to those of SN 1997ef, which suggests that the ejected mass in SN 2003dh may match that in SN 1997ef. Polarization was marginally detected at optical wavelengths. We present deep optical spectroscopy of an extended Ly$\alpha$ emission-line blob located in an over-dense region at redshift $z \approx 3.1$; `blob 1' of Steidel et al. (2000). The origin of such Ly$\alpha$ blobs has been debated for some time; two of the most plausible models are (1) that it comes from a dust-enshrouded, extreme starburst galaxy with a large-scale galactic outflow (superwind/hyperwind) or (2) that it is the cooling radiation of proto-galaxies in dark matter halos. Examination of the kinematic properties of the Ly$\alpha$ emission-line gas should allow us to determine its nature. With this motivation, we performed optical spectroscopy of `blob 1' using the Subaru Telescope, and found that its kinematic properties can be well explained in terms of superwind activity., Comment: 12 pages, including 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

We report the discovery of a large-scale structure of Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs) at z=4.86 based on wide-field imaging with the prime-focus camera (Suprime-Cam) on the Subaru telescope. We observed a 25' x 45' area of the Subaru Deep Field in a narrow band (NB, lambdaC=7126 A and FWHM=73 A) together with R and i'. We isolate from these data 43 LAE candidates down to NB=25.5 mag using color criteria. Follow-up spectroscopy of five candidates suggests the contamination by low-z objects to be ~ 20%. We find that the LAE candidates are clustered in an elongated region on the sky of 20 Mpc in width and 50 Mpc in length at z=4.86, which is comparable in size to present-day large-scale structures (we adopt H0=70 km/s/Mpc, Omega0=0.3, lambda0=0.7). This elongated region includes a circular region of 12 Mpc radius of higher surface overdensity (delta=2), which may be the progenitor of a cluster of galaxies. Assuming this circular region to be a sphere with a spatial overdensity of 2, we compare our observation with predictions by Cold Dark Matter models. We find that an Omega0=0.3 flat model with sigma8=0.9 predicts the number of such spheres consistent with the observed number (one sphere in our survey volume) if the bias parameter of LAEs is b \simeq 6. This value suggests that the typical mass of dark haloes hosting LAEs at z \simeq 5 is of the order of 10^12 Msolar. During the course of our deep optical imaging survey for Ly alpha emitters at z approximately 5.7 in the field around the z=5.74 quasar SDSSp J104433.04-012502.2, we have found a candidate strong emission-line source. Follow-up optical spectroscopy shows that the emission line profile of this object is asymmetric, showing excess red-wing emission. These properties are consistent with an identification of Ly alpha emission at a redshift of z=5.687 +/- 0.002. The observed broad line width, Delta V_{FWHM} ~= 340 km s^{-1} and excess red-wing emission also suggest that this object hosts a galactic superwind., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures (Figure 2 and Figure 4 are JPEG files). We present spectropolarimetry of the Type Ic supernova SN 2002ap and give a preliminary analysis: the data were taken at two epochs, close to and one month later than the visual maximum (2002 February 8). In addition we present June 9 spectropolarimetry without analysis. The data show the development of linear polarization. Distinct polarization profiles were seen only in the O I \lambda 7773 multiplet/Ca II IR triplet absorption trough at maximum light and in the Ca II IR triplet absorption trough a month later, with the latter showing a peak polarization as high as ~2 %. The intrinsic polarization shows three clear position angles: 80 degs for the February continuum, 120 degs for the February line feature, and 150 degs for the March data. We conclude that there are multiple asymmetric components in the ejecta. We suggest that the supernova has a bulk asymmetry with an axial ratio projected on the sky that is different from 1 by of order 10 %. Furthermore, we suggest very speculatively that a high velocity ejecta component moving faster than ~0.115c (e.g., a jet) contributes to polarization in the February epoch., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal (Letters)

Photometric and spectroscopic data of the energetic Type Ic supernova (SN) 2002ap are presented, and the properties of the SN are investigated through models of its spectral evolution and its light curve. The SN is spectroscopically similar to the "hypernova" SN 1997ef. However, its kinetic energy [$\sim (4-10) \times 10^{51}$ erg] and the mass ejected (2.5-5 $M_{\odot}$) are smaller, resulting in a faster-evolving light curve. The SN synthesized $\sim 0.07 M_{\odot}$ of $^{56}$Ni, and its peak luminosity was similar to that of normal SNe. Brightness alone should not be used to define a hypernova, whose defining character, namely very broad spectral features, is the result of a high kinetic energy. The likely main-sequence mass of the progenitor star was 20-25 $M_{\odot}$, which is also lower than that of both hypernovae SNe 1997ef and 1998bw. SN 2002ap appears to lie at the low-energy and low-mass end of the hypernova sequence as it is known so far. In order to investigate the genesis of powerful radio jet, we have mapped the central 10 pc region of the nearby radio galaxy NGC 6251 with a 0.2 pc resolution using Very Long Baseline Interferometer (VLBI) at two radio frequencies, 5 GHz and 15 GHz, we have found the sub-parsec-scale counterjet for the first time in this radio galaxy. In order to investigate dynamical properties of spiral galaxies in the Hickson compact groups (HCGs), we present rotation curves of 30 galaxies in 20 HCGs. We found as follows. 1) There is not significant relation between dynamical peculiarity and morphological peculiarity in HCG spirals. 2) There is no significant relation between the dynamical properties and the frequency distribution of nuclear activities in HCG spirals. 3) There are no significant correlations between the dynamical properties of HCG spirals and any group properties (i.e., the size, the velocity dispersion, the galaxy number density, and the crossing time). 4) Asymmetric and peculiar rotation curves are more frequently seen in the HCG spirals than in field spirals and in cluster ones. However, this tendency is more obviously seen in late-type HCG spirals. These results suggest that the dynamical properties of HCG spirals do not strongly correlate with the morphology, the nuclear activity, and the group properties. Mapping the central 5 pc region of the nearby radio galaxy NGC 6251 with a 0.2 pc resolution using VLBI at two radio frequencies, 5 GHz and 15 GHz, we have found the sub-pc-scale counter jet for the first time in this radio galaxy. We report results of $^{12}$CO ($J=1$-0) mapping observations of the Wolf-Rayet starburst galaxy Mrk 1259 which has optical evidence for the superwind seen from a nearly pole-on view. The CO emission is detected in the central 4 kpc region. The nuclear CO spectrum shows a blue-shifted ($\Delta V \simeq -27$ km s$^{-1}$) broad (FWHM $\simeq$ 114 km s$^{-1}$) component as well as the narrow one (FWHM $\simeq 68$ km s$^{-1}$). The off-nuclear CO spectra also show the single-peaked broad component (FWHM $\simeq$ 100 km s$^{-1}$). The single-peaked CO profiles of both the nuclear and off-nuclear regions may be explained if we introduce a CO gas disk with a velocity dispersion of $\sim 100$ km s$^{-1}$. If this gas disk would be extended up to a few kpc in radius, we may explain the wide line widths of the off-nuclear CO emission. Alternatively, we may attribute the off-nuclear CO emission to the gas associated with the superwind. However, if all the CO gas moves along the biconical surface of the superwind, the CO spectra would show double-peaked profiles. Hence, the single-peaked CO profiles of the off-nuclear regions may be explained by an idea that the morphology and/or velocity field of the molecular-gas superwind are more complex as suggested by hydrodynamical simulations., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, Accepted by ApJL

We report the discovery of a starburst-driven wind (superwind) from the starburst nucleus galaxy Mrk 1259. The estimated number ratio of Wolf-Rayet (WR) to O stars amounts to ~0.09. While the nuclear emission-line region is due to usual photoionization by massive stars, the circumnuclear emission-line regions show anomalous line ratios that can be due to cooling shocks. Since the host galaxy seems to be a face-on disk galaxy and the excitation conditions of the circumnuclear emission-line regions show the spatial symmetry, we consider that we are seeing the superwind nearly from a pole-on view. Cooling shock models may explain the observed emission line ratios of the circumnuclear regions although a factor of 2 overabundance of nitrogen is necessary. All these suggest that the high-mass enhanced starburst occurred ~5X10^6 years ago in the nuclear region of Mrk 1259., Comment: To be published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters, 15 pages, 4 figures
