1. Temperature-driven modification of surface electronic structure on bismuth, a topological border material

Abstract: Single crystalline bismuth (Bi) is known to have a peculiar electronic structure which is very close to the topological phase transition. The modification of the surface states of Bi depending on the temperature are revealed by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). At low temperature, the upper branch of the surface state merged to the projected bulk conduction bands around the $\bar{M}$ point of the surface Brillouin zone (SBZ). In contrast, the same branch merged to the projected bulk valence bands at high temperature (400 K). Such behavior could be interpreted as a topological phase transition driven by the temperature, which might be applicable for future spin-thermoelectric devices. We discuss the possible mechanisms to cause such transition, such as the thermal lattice distortion and electron-phonon coupling., Comment: 15 pages with 6 figures (single column)

2. Giant Rashba splitting of quasi-1D surface states on Bi/InAs(110)-(2$\times$1)

Abstract: Electronic states on the Bi/InAs(110)-(2$\times$1) surface and its spin-polarized structure are revealed by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), spin-resolved ARPES, and density-functional-theory calculation. The surface state showed quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) dispersion and a nearly metallic character; the top of the hole-like surface band is just below the Fermi level. The size of the Rashba parameter ($\alpha_{\rm R}$) reached quite a large value ($\sim$5.5 eV\AA). The present result would provide a fertile playground for further studies of the exotic electronic phenomena in 1D or Q1D systems with the spin-split electronic states as well as for advanced spintronic devices., Comment: 8 pages (double column), 7 figures and 1 table

3. Non-trivial surface states of samarium hexaboride at the (111) surface

Abstract: The peculiar metallic electronic states observed in the Kondo insulator, samarium hexaboride (SmB$_6$), has stimulated considerable attention among those studying non-trivial electronic phenomena. However, experimental studies of these states have led to controversial conclusions mainly to the difficulty and inhomogeneity of the SmB$_6$ crystal surface. Here, we show the detailed electronic structure of SmB$_6$ with angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy measurements of the three-fold (111) surface where only two inequivalent time-reversal-invariant momenta (TRIM) exist. We observe the metallic two-dimensional state was dispersed across the bulk Kondo gap. Its helical in-plane spin polarisation around the surface TRIM suggests that SmB$_6$ is topologically non-trivial, according to the topological classification theory for weakly correlated systems. 4. Direct observation of electron thermalization and electron-phonon coupling in photoexcited bismuth

Abstract: We investigate the ultrafast response of the bismuth (111) surface by means of time resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The direct visualization of the electronic structure allows us to gain insights on electron-electron and electron-phonon interaction. Concerning electron-electron interaction, it is found that electron thermalization is fluence dependent and can take as much as several hundreds of femtoseconds at low fluences. This behavior is in qualitative agreement with Landau's theory of Fermi liquids but the data show deviations from the behavior of a common 3D degenerate electron gas. Concerning electron-phonon interaction, our data allows us to directly observe the coupling of individual Bloch state to the coherent $A_{1g}$ mode. It is found that surface states are much less coupled to this mode when compared to bulk states. This is confirmed by \textit{ab initio} calculations of surface and bulk bismuth.

5. Effects of finite-range interactions on the one-electron spectral properties of one-dimensional metals: Application to Bi/InSb(001)

Abstract: We study the one-electron spectral properties of one-dimensional interacting electron systems in which the interactions have finite range. We employ a mobile quantum impurity scheme that describes the interactions of the fractionalized excitations at energies above the standard Tomonga-Luttinger liquid limit and show that the phase shifts induced by the impurity describe universal properties of the one-particle spectral function. We find the explicit forms in terms of these phase shifts for the momentum dependent exponents that control the behavior of the spectral function near and at the (k,omega)-plane singularities where most of the spectral weight is located. The universality arises because the line shape near the singularities is independent of the short-distance part of the interaction potentials. For the class of potentials considered here, the charge fractionalized particles have screened Coulomb interactions that decay with a power-law exponent l>5. We apply the theory to the angle-resolved photo-electron spectroscopy (ARPES) in the highly one-dimensional bismuth-induced anisotropic structure on indium antimonide Bi/InSb(001). Our theoretical predictions agree quantitatively with both (i) the experimental value found in Bi/InSb(001) for the exponent alpha that controls the suppression of the density of states at very small excitation energy omega and (ii) the location in the (k,omega) plane of the experimentally observed high-energy peaks in the ARPES momentum and energy distributions. We conclude with a discussion of experimental properties beyond the range of our present theoretical framework and further open questions regarding the one-electron spectral properties of Bi/InSb(001)., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures

6. Spin-polarized quasi 1D state with finite bandgap on the Bi/InSb(001) surface

Abstract: One-dimensional (1D) electronic states were discovered on 1D surface atomic structure of Bi fabricated on semiconductor InSb(001) substrates by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). The 1D state showed steep, Dirac-cone-like dispersion along the 1D atomic structure with a finite direct bandgap opening as large as 150 meV. Moreover, spin-resolved ARPES revealed the spin polarization of the 1D unoccupied states as well as that of the occupied states, the orientation of which inverted depending on the wave vector direction parallel to the 1D array on the surface. These results reveal that a spin-polarized quasi-1D carrier was realized on the surface of 1D Bi with highly efficient backscattering suppression, showing promise for use in future spintronic and energy-saving devices., Comment: 9 pages (4 figures for the main text, 7 for supplemental material). Abstract: The electronic states of Au-induced atomic nanowires on Ge(001) (Au/Ge(001) NWs) have been investigated by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with linearly polarized light. We have found three electron pockets around $\bar{J}\bar{K}$, where the Fermi surfaces are closed in a surface Brillouin zone, indicating that the surface states of Au/Ge(001) NWs are two-dimensional whereas the atomic structure is one-dimensional. The two-dimensional metallic states exhibit remarkable suppression of the photoelectron intensity near a Fermi energy. This suppression can be explained by the correlation and localization effects in disordered metals, which is a deviation from a Fermi-liquid model., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

8. Spin-pumping into surface states of topological insulator {\alpha}-Sn, spin to charge conversion at room temperature

Abstract: We present experimental results on the conversion of a spin current into a charge current by spin pumping into the Dirac cone with helical spin polarization of the elemental topological insulator (TI) {\alpha}-Sn[1-3]. By angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) we first confirm that the Dirac cone at the surface of {\alpha}-Sn (0 0 1) layers subsists after covering with Ag. Then we show that resonant spin pumping at room temperature from Fe through Ag into {\alpha}-Sn layers induces a lateral charge current that can be ascribed to the Inverse Edelstein Effect[4-5]. Our observation of an Inverse Edelstein Effect length[5-6] much longer than for Rashba interfaces[5-10] demonstrates the potential of the TI for conversion between spin and charge in spintronic devices. By comparing our results with data on the relaxation time of TI free surface states from time-resolved ARPES, we can anticipate the ultimate potential of TI for spin to charge conversion and the conditions to reach it., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: We report the evolution of the surface electronic structure and surface material properties of a topological crystalline insulator (TCI) Pb1-xSnxSe as a function of various material parameters including composition x, temperature T and crystal structure. Our spectroscopic data demonstrate the electronic groundstate condition for the saddle point singularity, the tunability of surface chemical potential, and the surface states' response to circularly polarized light. Our results show that each material parameter can tune the system between trivial and topological phase in a distinct way unlike as seen in Bi2Se3 and related compounds, leading to a rich and unique topological phase diagram. Abstract: The Rashba effect is one of the most striking manifestations of spin-orbit coupling in solids, and provides a cornerstone for the burgeoning field of semiconductor spintronics. It is typically assumed to manifest as a momentum-dependent splitting of a single initially spin-degenerate band into two branches with opposite spin polarisation. Here, combining polarisation-dependent and resonant angle-resolved photoemission measurements with density-functional theory calculations, we show that the two "spin-split" branches of the model giant Rashba system BiTeI additionally develop disparate orbital textures, each of which is coupled to a distinct spin configuration. Abstract: A topological crystalline insulator (TCI) is a new phase of topological matter, which is predicted to exhibit distinct topological quantum phenomena, since space group symmetries replace the role of time-reversal symmetry in the much-studied Z$_2$ topological insulators. Utilizing high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we reveal the momentum space nature of interconnectivity of the Fermi surface pockets leading to a saddle point singularity within the topological surface state alone in the TCI Pb$_{0.7}$Sn$_{0.3}$Se. Moreover, we show that the measured momentum-integrated density of states exhibits pronounced peaks at the saddle point energies, demonstrating the van Hove singularities (VHSs) in the topological surface states, whose surface chemical potential, as we show, can be tuned via surface chemical gating, providing access to the topological correlated physics on the surface. Our experimental data reveal a delicate relationship among lattice constant, band gap and spin-orbit coupling strength associated with the topological phase transition in Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$Se. Furthermore, we explore the robustness of the TCI phase with VHS in Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$Se, which shows a variety of distinct topological phase transitions driven by either thermal instability or broken crystalline symmetry, and thus revealing a rich topological phase diagram connectivity in Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$Se for the first time., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figres

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all domains of human life, including the economic and social fabric of societies. One of the central strategies for managing public health throughout the pandemic has been through persuasive messaging and collective behaviour change. To help scholars better understand the social and moral psychology behind public health behaviour, we present a dataset comprising of 51,404 individuals from 69 countries. This dataset was collected for the International Collaboration on Social & Moral Psychology of COVID-19 project (ICSMP COVID-19). This social science survey invited participants around the world to complete a series of moral and psychological measures and public health attitudes about COVID-19 during an early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic (between April and June 2020). The survey included seven broad categories of questions: COVID-19 beliefs and compliance behaviours; identity and social attitudes; ideology; health and well-being; moral beliefs and motivation; personality traits; and demographic variables. We report both raw and cleaned data, along with all survey materials, data visualisations, and psychometric evaluations of key variables.

Abstract: We investigate the bismuth (111) surface by means of time and angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. The parallel detection of the surface states below and above the Fermi level reveals a giant anisotropy of the Spin-Orbit (SO) spitting. These strong deviations from the Rashba-like coupling cannot be treated in $\textbf{k}\cdot \textbf{p}$ perturbation theory. Instead, first principle calculations could accurately reproduce the experimental dispersion of the electronic states. Our analysis shows that the giant anisotropy of the SO splitting is due to a large out-of plane buckling of the spin and orbital texture., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: Changing collective behaviour and supporting non-pharmaceutical interventions is an important component in mitigating virus transmission during a pandemic. In a large international collaboration (Study 1, N = 49,968 across 67 countries), we investigated self-reported factors associated with public health behaviours (e.g., spatial distancing and stricter hygiene) and endorsed public policy interventions (e.g., closing bars and restaurants) during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic (April-May 2020). Respondents who reported identifying more strongly with their nation consistently reported greater engagement in public health behaviours and support for public health policies. Results were similar for representative and non-representative national samples. Study 2 (N = 42 countries) conceptually replicated the central finding using aggregate indices of national identity (obtained using the World Values Survey) and a measure of actual behaviour change during the pandemic (obtained from Google mobility reports). Higher levels of national identification prior to the pandemic predicted lower mobility during the early stage of the pandemic (r = −0.40). We discuss the potential implications of links between national identity, leadership, and public health for managing COVID-19 and future pandemics.

Abstract: Changing collective behaviour and supporting non-pharmaceutical interventions is an important component in mitigating virus transmission during a pandemic. In a large international collaboration (Study 1, N = 49,968 across 67 countries), we investigated self-reported factors associated with public health behaviours (e.g., spatial distancing and stricter hygiene) and endorsed public policy interventions (e.g., closing bars and restaurants) during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic (April-May 2020). Respondents who reported identifying more strongly with their nation consistently reported greater engagement in public health behaviours and support for public health policies. Results were similar for representative and non-representative national samples. Study 2 (N = 42 countries) conceptually replicated the central finding using aggregate indices of national identity (obtained using the World Values Survey) and a measure of actual behaviour change during the pandemic (obtained from Google mobility reports). Higher levels of national identification prior to the pandemic predicted lower mobility during the early stage of the pandemic (r = -0.40). We discuss the potential implications of links between national identity, leadership, and public health for managing COVID-19 and future pandemics.

Abstract: The electronic structure of a Bi(0.9)1Sb(0.09) single crystal was elucidated at a bisectrix (11 (2) over bar) surface by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy using microbeam synchrotron radiation. A Dirac-cone-like dispersion of the surface state was observed at the G (Gamma) over bar point. The detected surface-state band likely corresponds to the one observed in previous quantum transport research (Taskin and Ando, 2009) [14].

Abstract: We present experimental results on the conversion of a spin current into a charge current by spin pumping into the Dirac cone with helical spin polarization of the elemental topological insulator (TI) ��-Sn[1-3]. By angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) we first confirm that the Dirac cone at the surface of ��-Sn (0 0 1) layers subsists after covering with Ag. Then we show that resonant spin pumping at room temperature from Fe through Ag into ��-Sn layers induces a lateral charge current that can be ascribed to the Inverse Edelstein Effect[4-5]. Our observation of an Inverse Edelstein Effect length[5-6] much longer than for Rashba interfaces[5-10] demonstrates the potential of the TI for conversion between spin and charge in spintronic devices. By comparing our results with data on the relaxation time of TI free surface states from time-resolved ARPES, we can anticipate the ultimate potential of TI for spin to charge conversion and the conditions to reach it., 14 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: The present study has two purposes. First, we wish to test the descriptive power of the Nash equilibrium solution in a traffic network game with a new population of participants and a different experimental procedure. Second, we wish to determine whether the effects of prior investment and personal responsibility, that may lead people to commit to a failing project, may be generalized from individual to interactive decision tasks. For these two purposes, we implement a computer-controlled traffic network game in which the addition of a cost-free line segment to the network may, in equilibrium, increase the travel cost of all the network users.

Abstract: The depth of human reasoning in interactive decision-making situations can be assessed experimentally in dominance solvable non-cooperative games. We first review the studies employing two sorts of games - the Beauty Contest game and the Investment game. Studies employing these games show that: (i) people typically engage in relatively low levels of strategic reasoning; and (ii) there are individual differences in the depth of reasoning. There are other lines of research employing other types of games and definitions of the depth of reasoning that support the two conclusions above. We argue that these studies underestimate depth of reasoning because it is also necessary to apply a mental model about other players' reasoning ability in order to play well. Implications of those findings to the theory-of-mind or Machiavellian Intelligence research are discussed. © 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract: In vivo growth of syngeneic tumour cells in the peritoneal cavity was strongly inhibited by intraperitoneal injection of a liposome-encapsulated, mycolic acid-containing glycolipid, trehalose 2,3,6'-trimycolate (TTM), derived from a non-pathogenic, acid-fast bacterium. Gordona aurantiaca. Peritoneal macrophages from mice after this treatment lysed tumour cells in vitro at a low effector/target ratio, and their culture supernatant inhibited tumour cell growth. The supernatant inhibited growth of not only tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-sensitive tumour cells, but also TNF-insensitive tumour cells. This inhibitory activity was enhanced by addition of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to the culture medium of the macrophages. The macrophages released more superoxide (O2-), TNF and interleukin-1 (IL-1) on LPS triggering, and the releases of these compounds were further increased by addition of recombinant interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) to the medium. Moreover, splenic T cells of TTM liposome-primed mice were found to produce eight times more IFN-gamma upon stimulation with LPS. These results indicated that priming with TTM liposomes resulted in strong activation of macrophages, which lysed tumour cells directly and also inhibited tumour cell growth by released factors.
