This study was conducted to investigate the applicability of wood bark-based activated carbon (AC) for the adsorption of metal ions and volatile organic compounds (VOC) from the atmosphere. Contents of Fe and Al in the AC made with coconut shell, and the bark of larch and cork oak (CSA, LBA and COA, respectively) were higher than those of the unexposed AC and increased with the exposure to various indoor/outdoor spaces when compared to the unexposed AC. However, Fe and Al contents of the exposed AC, which is a coal-based one used as a control (SAA), were lower and scarcely higher than the unexposed SAA. From the results, it is evident that the wood bark-based AC examined in this study is more effective to adsorb metals than SAA. The SEM-EDS analysis exhibited prominent metal-adsorptivity of COA, although its total surface area and pore volume were lower than those of SAA. Total VOC-adsorptivity was the highest in COA followed by CSA, CBA (cypress bark activated carbon), LBA and SAA. In conclusion, wood bark-based AC can be utilized as an effective adsorbent for the removal of metals and VOC from the atmosphere. The optimum AC is COA, an industrial by-product, in view of the techno-economic aspect.

Summary Wood identification is a crucial step to verify claims of the legality of wood and wood-derived products for compliance with the laws against illegal logging. For accurate determination of wood species, transmitted light microscopy has been utilized to identify microscopic features of wood from microscopic slides with thin sections from the transverse, radial, and tangential planes. When there are many woods in trading for identification, producing microscopic or permanent slides can be problematic because the production of the slides is time-consuming and slows down wood identification. However, the slides are not required for alternative microscopy such as epi-illumination light microscopy. In this study, we suggest the utilization of epi-illumination light microscopy as an alternative method to conventional transmitted light microscopy with microscopic slides for wood identification. We investigated the performance of selected epi-illumination light microscopic techniques: brightfield reflected light microscopy with a polarizer (RLBF), darkfield reflected light microscopy (RLDF), and fluorescence light microscopy by observing intervessel pits and vessel-ray pits. Among the selected epi-illumination light microscopy, brightfield reflected light microscopy with a polarizer produced images with small details and high contrast. Since sample preparation for reflected light microscopy can be minimized, we can accelerate the wood identification process without sacrificing accuracy. We confirmed that reflected light microscopy has sufficient performance with simple sample preparation comparable to transmitted light microscopy.

Lumber species identification is an important issue for the wood industry. In this study, three types of neural networks (artificial neural network (ANN), deep neural network (DNN), and convolutional neural network (CNN)) were employed for classifying softwood lumber species using NIR spectroscopy. The results show that CNN, which is based on deep learning, was more stable than the other neural networks. In particular, the stability of the training process was remarkably improved in CNN models. During the training procedure, the validation accuracy of the CNN model was 99.3% for the raw spectra, 99.9% for the standard normal variate (SNV) spectra and 100.0% for the Savitzky-Golay second derivative spectra. Interestingly, there was little difference in the validation accuracies among the CNN models depending on mathematical preprocessing. The results showed that CNN is sufficiently adequate to classify the softwood lumber species.

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) plays a central role in analyzing structures by imaging a large area of brain tissue at nanometer scales. A vast amount of data in the large area are required to study structural changes of cellular organelles in a specific cell, such as neurons, astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and microglia among brain tissue, at sufficient resolution. Array tomography is a useful method for large-area imaging, and the osmium-thiocarbohydrazide-osmium (OTO) and ferrocyanide-reduced osmium methods are commonly used to enhance membrane contrast.Because many samples prepared using the conventional technique without en bloc staining are considered inadequate for array tomography, we suggested an alternative technique using post-staining conventional samples and compared the advantages.

Cryogenic-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) is the preferred method to determine 3D structures of proteins and to study diverse material systems that intrinsically have radiation or air sensitivity. Current cryo-EM sample preparation methods provide limited control over the sample quality, which limits the efficiency and high throughput of 3D structure analysis. This is partly because it is difficult to control the thickness of the vitreous ice that embeds specimens, in the range of nanoscale, depending on the size and type of materials of interest. Thus, there is a need for fine regulation of the thickness of vitreous ice to deliver consistent high signal-to-noise ratios for low-contrast biological specimens. Herein, an advanced silicon-chip-based device is developed which has a regular array of micropatterned holes with a graphene oxide (GO) window on freestanding silicon nitride (Six Ny ). Accurately regulated depths of micropatterned holes enable precise control of vitreous ice thickness. Furthermore, GO window with affinity for biomolecules can facilitate concentration of the sample molecules at a higher level. Incorporation of micropatterned chips with a GO window enhances cryo-EM imaging for various nanoscale biological samples including human immunodeficiency viral particles, groEL tetradecamers, apoferritin octahedral, aldolase homotetramer complexes, and tau filaments, as well as inorganic materials.

Low-mass (sub-eV) scalar field dark matter may induce apparent oscillations of fundamental constants, resulting in corresponding oscillations of the size and the index of refraction of solids. Laser interferometers are highly sensitive to changes in the size and index of refraction of the main beamsplitter. Using cross-correlated data of the Fermilab Holometer instrument, which consists of twin co-located 40-m arm length power-recycled interferometers, we investigate the possible existence of scalar field dark matter candidates in the mass range between 1.6$\cdot$10$^{-12}$ eV and 1.0$\cdot$10$^{-7}$ eV. We set new upper limits for the coupling parameters of scalar field dark matter, improving on limits from previous direct searches by up to three orders of magnitude.

In our previous study, we investigated the use of ensemble models based on LeNet and MiniVGGNet to classify the images of transverse and longitudinal surfaces of five Korean softwoods (cedar, cypress, Korean pine, Korean red pine, and larch). It had accomplished an average F1 score of more than 98%; the classification performance of the longitudinal surface image was still less than that of the transverse surface image. In this study, ensemble methods of two different convolutional neural network models (LeNet3 for smartphone camera images and NIRNet for NIR spectra) were applied to lumber species classification. Experimentally, the best classification performance was obtained by the averaging ensemble method of LeNet3 and NIRNet. The average F1 scores of the individual LeNet3 model and the individual NIRNet model were 91.98% and 85.94%, respectively. By the averaging ensemble method of LeNet3 and NIRNet, an average F1 score was increased to 95.31%.

This study analyzed the effect of organic solvent extractives on the classification of wood species via near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR). In our previous research, five species of Korean softwood were classified into three groups (i.e., Cryptomeria japonica (cedar)/Chamaecyparis obtuse (cypress), Pinus densiflora (red pine)/Pinus koraiensis (Korean pine), and Larix kaempferi (Larch)) using an NIR-based principal component analysis method. Similar tendencies of extractive distribution were observed among the three groups in that study. Therefore, in this study, we qualitatively analyzed extractives extracted by an organic solvent and analyzed the NIR spectra in terms of the extractives’ chemical structure and band assignment to determine their effect in more detail. Cedar/cypress showed a similar NIR spectra patterns by removing the extractives at 1695, 1724, and 2291 nm. D-pinitol, which was detected in cedar, contributed to that wavelength. Red pine/Korean pine showed spectra changes at 1616, 1695, 1681, 1705, 1724, 1731, 1765, 1780, and 2300 nm. Diterpenoids and fatty acid, which have a carboxylic group and an aliphatic double bond, contributed to that wavelength. Larch showed a catechin peak in gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy analysis, but it exhibited very small NIR spectra changes. The aromatic bond in larch seemed to have low sensitivity because of the 1st overtone of the O-H bond of the sawdust cellulose. The three groups sorted via NIR spectroscopy in the previous research showed quite different compositions of extractives, in accordance with the NIR band assignment. Thus, organic solvent extractives are expected to affect the classification of wood species using NIR spectroscopy.

Precision measurements are reported of the cross-spectrum of rotationally-induced differential position displacements in a pair of colocated 39 m long, high power Michelson interferometers. One arm of each interferometer is bent $90^{\circ}$ near its midpoint to obtain sensitivity to rotations about an axis normal to the plane of the instrument. The instrument achieves quantum-limited sensing of spatially-correlated signals in a broad frequency band extending beyond the 3.9 MHz inverse light travel time of the apparatus. For stationary signals with bandwidth $\Delta f > 10\;\mathrm{kHz}$, the sensitivity to rotation-induced strain $h$ of classical or exotic origin surpasses $\mathrm{CSD}_{\delta h} < t_P / 2$, where $t_P = 5.39 \times 10^{-44}\;\mathrm{s}$ is the Planck time. This paper examines the classification of five coniferous species, including larch (Larix kaempferi), red pine (Pinus densiflora), Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis), cedar (Cryptomeria japonica), and cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa), using near-infrared (NIR) spectra. Fifty lumber samples were collected for each species. After air-drying the lumber, the NIR spectra (wavelength = 780-2500 nm) were acquired on the wide face of the lumber samples. Soft independent modeling of class analogy (SIMCA) was performed to classify the five species using their NIR spectra. Three types of spectra (raw, standard normal variated, and Savitzky-Golay 2nd derivative) were used to compare the classification reliability of the SIMCA models. The SIMCA model based on Savitzky-Golay 2nd derivatives preprocessing was determined as the best classification model in this study. The accuracy, minimum precision, and minimum recall of the best model (PCA models using Savitzky-Golay 2nd derivative preprocessed spectra) were evaluated as 73.00%, 98.54% (Korean pine), and 67.50% (Korean pine), respectively.

We synthesized the reproducible heterogeneous catalyst of graphene oxide (GO)-supported palladium nanoparticles (NPs) via a simple and green process. The structure, morphology and physicochemical properties of the synthesized heterogeneous catalyst were characterized by the latest techniques such as high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning TEM, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The GO-supported Pd NPs (Pd/GO nanocatalyst) exhibited excellent catalytic activity for the reduction of nitroaromatics to aminoaromatics in aqueous sodium borohydride. The nitroaromatics were converted to corresponding aminoaromatics with high yields (up to 99%) using Pd/GO nanocatalyst in aqueous solution. The hybrid heterogeneous catalyst showed 83% of conversion after six cycles in the reduction of nitrobenzene to aminobenzene. These features ensured the high catalytic activity of the introduced graphene oxide supported Pd nanocatalysts.

In this study, the heat exchange characteristics of water–LiBr solutions used as working fluid in a plate heat exchanger (PHE) were experimentally investigated at various concentrations. To analyze the heat transfer characteristics under LiBr/water conditions, a brazing type plate heat exchanger was installed, and the LiBr concentration on the high-temperature side was controlled at 56%, 58%, 60% and 60%. The results showed that the average heat transfer rate under water/water conditions was higher than that under LiBr/water conditions and the average heat transfer rate decreased as the LiBr concentration on the hot side increased. In addition, under both water/water and LiBr/water conditions, the average heat transfer rate and overall heat transfer coefficient increased as the mass flow rate of the working fluid on the hot side increased. When LiBr was used, the Reynolds number (Re) of LiBr on the hot side was more than nine times lower than that of water at the same mass flow rate owing to the influence of the increased viscosity. Based on the data obtained from the water/water and LiBr/water experiments, a correlation for predicting the Nusselt number (Nu) on the hot side in a wide range was developed.

The goal of this study was to examine the conversion of lignin-rich residues from (hard)wood cellulosic sugar production into films without adding binders. Enzymatic hydrolysis was conducted on alkaline pretreated aspen wood to attain saccharification (liberation of monomeric sugars). Non-converted lignin-rich residues in the solid waste stream were fibrillated and formed into films with the aid of micro/nanofibrillated wood (non-saccharified). The films were hotpressed to activate the adhesive characteristic of the lignin in situ. Results showed that hotpressing drastically improved water resistance and wet strength. These effects, not attributable to densification alone, are judged to have arisen from heat-induced hydrolytically stable bonding and hydrophobization. The fully biobased films, even at highly moist (98% RH) conditions, are comparable in strength and stiffness, and tested significantly more biodegradable compared to polystyrene polymer. Overall, this study offers a simple route for converting wood saccharification residues without pre-refining for lignin, thereby favoring cost efficiency of a coproduction strategy in the cellulosic sugar production.

A giant dogwood (Cornus controversa) was bleeding transparent sap that turned into gummy orange slime with a pungent odor on the bark in early April. The tree exudation originated from a branch wound that occurred during the most recent spring pruning. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the intact bark surface was irregularly undulating and covered with at least three types of epicuticular waxes: polygonal rodlets; polygonal tubules; and threads, whereas the dried orange plaques were covered with fungi, possibly the co-occurrence of yeast and filamentous forms. The yeast forms were ovoid, lemon- or club-shaped, and approximately 10 μm in length. Obviously constricted septa and clamp connections were rarely detected on the filamentous forms. No bacterial proliferation was detected on the orange slime. X-ray microanalysis revealed a steep increase in calcium concentration in the orange plaques compared with that in the intact bark. This study was to establish the interrelation between chemical compositions and near infrared (NIR) spectra for the classification on distinguishability of domestic gymnosperms. Traditional wet chemistry methods and infrared spectral analyses were performed. In chemical compositions of five softwood species including larch (Larix kaempferi), red pine (Pinus densiflora), Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis), cypress (Chamaecyparis obtu-sa), and cedar (Cryptomeria japonica), their extractives and lignin contents provided the major information for distinction between the wood species. However, depending on the production region and purchasing time of woods, chemical compositions were different even though in same species. Especially, red pine harvested from Naju showed the highest extractive content about 16.3%, whereas that from Donghae showed about 5.0%. These results were expected due to different environmental conditions such as sunshine amount, nutrients and moisture contents, and these phenomena were also observed in other species. As a result of the principal component analysis (PCA) using NIR between five species (total 19 samples), the samples were divided into three groups in the score plot based on principal component (PC) 1 and principal component (PC) 2; group 1) red pine and Korean pine, group 2) larch, and group 3) cypress and cedar. Based on the chemical composition results, it was concluded that extractive content was highly relevant to wood class-ification by NIR analysis.

Electron microscopy is an important investigation and analytical method for the morphological characterization of various cellulosic materials, such as micro-crystalline cellulose (MCC), microfibrillated cellulose (MFC), nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC), and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC). However, more accurate morphological analysis requires high-quality micrographs acquired from the proper use of an electron microscope and associated sample preparation methods. Understanding the interaction of electron and matter as well as the importance of sample preparation methods, including drying and staining methods, enables the production of high quality images with adequate information on the nanocellulosic materials. This paper provides a brief overview of the micro and nano structural analysis of cellulose, as investigated using transmission and scanning electron microscopy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring in the asymptomatic population can improve cardiovascular risk prediction. We aimed to assess CAC progression and the impact of coronary risk factors on the CAC progression rate in asymptomatic Korean individuals with a baseline CAC score of zero. METHODS The study population was derived from the Korea Initiatives on Coronary Artery Calcification (KOICA) registry: a retrospective, single ethnicity, multicenter registry of asymptomatic individuals who underwent CAC scoring as a part of a health checkup. Individuals with at least two CAC scores and an initial score of zero were included. CAC progression was defined as [√CAC score (follow-up) - √CAC score (baseline)] ≥2.5. The 10-year atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk was calculated. RESULTS Among 6,268 participants (mean age, 48.0±7.1 years; male, 80.5%), 719 (11.5%) experienced CAC progression during follow-up (median, 109 months; interquartile range, 78-208 months). The CAC progression rate was 0.3%, 1.9%, 4.3%, 8.6%, and 16.7% in years 1-5, respectively. The occurrence of gastric mixed adenoneuroendocrine carcinoma (MANEC) is relatively rare, although a few cells of gastric adenocarcinoma frequently show neuroendocrine differentiation [1]. We herein present one of only a few reported cases of gastric MANEC with trilineage histologic differentiation, composed of adenocarcinoma, large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC), and squamous cell carcinoma (SqCC).

소나무의 가도관과 유연벽공의 미세구조를 연구하는데 공초점반사현미경법을 이용하여 획득한 3차원 화상을 사용하였다. 가도관 유연벽공의 토러스, 마르고, 벽공연의 미세구조가 명확하게 관찰되었으며, 교분야벽공의 미세구조로 가도관과 방사유세포 사이의 연결구조 및 방사유세포 내의 역학적 지지구조도 관찰할 수 있었다. 가도관 세포벽의 3차원 화상에서는 S1, S2, S3층과 이 층들의 사이에 있는 이행층의 존재도 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 S3층과 S2층의 마이크로 피브릴 배향의 관찰이 가능하였고, 유연벽공 주변의 복잡한 마이크로피브릴 배향 특성도 직접적으로 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구의 결과 공초점반사현미경법은 소나무 가도관의 세포벽, 유연벽공, 교분야벽공의 미세구조를 연구하는데 유용하게 이용될 수 있는 현미경 기법으로 여겨졌다. 【Confocal reflection microscopy (CRM) was utilized to create 3-dimensional images of bordered pits and cell wall in the tracheid of Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora). Ultrastructures of torus, margo, and pit border were clearly observable in the CRM micrograph. Micrograph of cross-field pit revealed the connecting and supporting structure between tracheid and ray parenchyma cell. The CRM micrographs enabled to investigate detailed structures of tracheid cell wall such as S1, S2, S3 layers, transition layers between these layers, and microfibril (MF) orientation in S3 and S2 layers as well as complicated distribution of MF orientation around bordered pits. Not only concentric MF orientation of border thickening in the pit border was observed, but also changes in MF orientation from the cell wall to the border. From the experimental results, the CRM was thought to be a versatile microtechnique to investigate detailed structures of cell wall and bordered pit in the tracheid and cross-field pit between tracheid and ray parenchyma cell.】

Confocal Reflection Microscopy (CRM) was applied to investigate external fibrillation of different types of fibers such as Kajaani reference fiber, Whatman filter fiber, thermomechanical pulp (TMP), and re-cycled TMP fiber. It was confirmed that the CRM images are created from surface structures of the fiber cell wall. Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM) captured overall shape of the fiber, but minute details of the surface of the fiber were missed. CRM captured the minute details of the fiber surface. From the CRM and CLSM images, it was observed that the CRM images mainly appeared on the fiber surfaces. External fibrillation of the fiber occurs at the fiber surface, not inside the cell wall. Thus, it was concluded that investigation on the external fibrillation of the fiber was possible by utilizing CRM images. A direct qualtitative and quantitative method for analysis of external fibrillation of fiber was demonstrated by uti-lizing surface area to volume ratio, volume fraction, and roughness calculated from 3-dimensional im-ages reconstructed from stacks of CRM images from the different fibers.

Hypoxia and angiogenesis are critical components in the progression of solid cancer, including gastric cancers (GCs). miR-382 has been identified as a hypoxia-induced miR (hypoxamiR), but the clinical significance in GCs has not been identified yet. This study demonstrates the utilization of light microscopy and Fast Fourier Transform-Peak Finding (FPF) method for microfibril angle (MFA) measurement from unstained sections of red pine (Pinus densiflora). To obtain an image with optimal contrast and resolution for MFA measurement, effects of numerical aperture (NA) of condenser lens and color filters were investigated. About 60% of NA of the maximum condenser NA produced an image with optimal contrast, but a color filter with short wavelength range (DAPI) created images with improved resolution. Manual angle measurement and the FPF method were applied to the image with optimal contrast for MFA measurement. The experimental results from the FPF method were considered to be more repeatable and less subjective than those from the manual angle measurement.

Final measurements and analysis are reported from the first-generation Holometer, the first instrument capable of measuring correlated variations in space-time position at strain noise power spectral densities smaller than a Planck time. The apparatus consists of two co-located, but independent and isolated, 40 m power-recycled Michelson interferometers, whose outputs are cross-correlated to 25 MHz. The data are sensitive to correlations of differential position across the apparatus over a broad band of frequencies up to and exceeding the inverse light crossing time, 7.6 MHz. By measuring with Planck precision the correlation of position variations at spacelike separations, the Holometer searches for faint, irreducible correlated position noise backgrounds predicted by some models of quantum space-time geometry. The first-generation optical layout is sensitive to quantum geometrical noise correlations with shear symmetry---those that can be interpreted as a fundamental noncommutativity of space-time position in orthogonal directions. General experimental constraints are placed on parameters of a set of models of spatial shear noise correlations, with a sensitivity that exceeds the Planck-scale holographic information bound on position states by a large factor. Measurements are reported of the cross-correlation of spectra of differential position signals from the Fermilab Holometer, a pair of co-located 39 m long, high power Michelson interferometers with flat, broadband frequency response in the MHz range. The instrument obtains sensitivity to high frequency correlated signals far exceeding any previous measurement in a broad frequency band extending beyond the 3.8 MHz inverse light crossing time of the apparatus. The dominant but uncorrelated shot noise is averaged down over $2\times 10^8$ independent spectral measurements with 381 Hz frequency resolution to obtain $2.1\times 10^{-20} \ \mathrm{m}/\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ sensitivity to stationary signals. Purpose The feasibility of a 3-week combination of S-1 and cisplatin as an adjuvant chemotherapy for patients with curatively resected gastric cancer was investigated. Experimental design Korean patients with stage II-IV (M0) gastric adenocarcinoma who underwent a gastrectomy with D2 lymph node resection were enrolled. The S-1 was administered orally at 80 mg/m2 divided into two daily doses for 14 days, while the cisplatin was administered at 60 mg/m2 intravenously over 2 h every 21 days. The patients received a maximum of six cycles. Results From January 2006 to July 2010, 74 patients were included in this study. The median patient age was 56 years (range, 22–71), and 51.4% (38/74) of the patients had a performance status of 0. The median number of chemotherapy cycles administered was 6 (range, 1–6). The median relative dose intensity was 86.4% for S-1 and 80.0% for cisplatin. With a median follow-up duration of 13.9 months, the median relapse-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) have not yet been reached. Fifteen relapses (20.3%) were documented. Plus, the estimated RFS rate was 60.5% at 3 years. The treatments were generally well tolerated. The most frequently observed grade 3–4 hematological toxicity was neutropenia (35.1%), and only 1 cycle of neutropenic fever occurred. The most frequently observed grade 3–4 non-hematological toxicities were nausea (4.1%) and asthenia (4.1%), and all the other grade 3–4 non-hematological toxicities were observed in less than 3% of the patients. Conclusions Postoperative adjuvant S-1 plus cisplatin for 18 weeks was found to be feasible for patients with stage II-IV (M0) gastric adenocarcinoma following complete surgical resection.

In this investigation the distributions of local mass, thickness, and density for various nonwoven materials were mapped and analyzed. Non-contacting twin laser profilometry was used to map 10 mm square regions to a resolution of 25 μm. The areal distribution of mass was obtained using β-transmission radiographic imaging. Samples were selected from three common categories: nonwoven hybrids, polymer extruded nonwovens, and wet laid nonwovens. Several samples had embossed regions where the structure was compressed by melt bonding to impart strength. Structural maps were partitioned using binary masks to isolate the embossed features from the stochastic background structure. The joint distributions of thickness versus areal density were plotted and used to characterize the separated regions. Based on the structural distributions obtained from mapped regions, the background structure of most of the samples provided similar results to those observed for other stochastic fibrous web materials, such as paper. The wet laid samples and one spun-bonded extruded polymer nonwoven appeared stochastic with good correlation between local thickness and local areal mass density. In contrast samples with induced features such as embossing, melt bonding, and calendering show that thickness became independent of mass as a result. Examination of the thickness distributions within embossed regions for different samples showed different responses to compression that appeared dependent on material density and thickness.

The performance of louver-finned flat-tube and fin and tube radiators for computer CPU liquid cooling was experimentally investigated. In this study, 7 samples of radiators with different shape and pass number (1, 2, 10) were tested in a wind tunnel. The experiments were conducted under the different air velocity ranged from 1 to 4 m/s. The water flow rate through a pass was 1.2 LPM. Inlet temperatures of air and water were and respectively. It was found that the best performance was observed in the louver-finned flat-tube sample considering pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient.

Background Genotypic drug resistance assay has been the only method available to provide information related to drug resistance in South Korea since 1999. Phenotypic assay is also a useful method to predict a patient's state related to antiretroviral drug resistance. However, commercial systems and methods for phenotyping have not been introduced into South Korea. Objectives To establish and apply modified phenotypic drug susceptibility assay using treatment-experienced patients’ derived HIV-1 in South Korea. Study design The genotypic drug resistance and phenotypic drug susceptibility of two different methods, Stanford HIV Drug Resistance Database (Stanford DB) and modified phenotypic drug susceptibility assay were compared especially focused on the HIV-1 protease (PR) and reverse transcriptase (RT) sequences. Results There was some discordance in comparing drug susceptibility results (a modified drug susceptibility assay) with the predicted genotypic drug resistance (Stanford DB). Phenotypic drug resistance showed the following order for pseudoviruses from treatment-experienced patients infected with HIV/AIDS: Efavirenz (EFV, 21 to 1,319-fold change), Lamivudine (3TC, 31 to >189-fold change), Indinavir sulfate (IDV, 26 to 63-fold change), Amprenavir (APV, 4 to 35-fold change) and Zidovudine (AZT, 20 to 634-fold change). For patient KRC3221, the AZT-related phenotypic drug resistance was the greatest, with 634-fold change compared with the wild type. Conclusions Application of this modified phenotypic drug susceptibility assay is expected to help in predicting drug resistance as a guideline for clinicians to obtain a combined interpretation among genotyping, phenotyping and effective clinical treatments.

A Lorentz invariant framework is developed to model the cross spectrum of two interferometers in a space-time that emerges from a Planck scale quantum system with exact causal symmetry and holographic spacelike rotational correlations. Space-time relationships between world lines are generated by entanglement of geometrical states on causal diamonds. The entanglement is tied to a unique observable signature: an exotic imaginary broad band cross spectrum, with a frequency structure determined by the layout of the interferometers. The models will be used to interpret data from the reconfigured Fermilab Holometer, and for conceptual design of future experiments., 26 pages, 14 figures.
