3. Thermal conductivity of the thermoelectric layered cobalt oxides measured by the Harman method

Abstract

In-plane thermal conductivity of the thermoelectric layered cobalt oxides has been measured using the Harman method, in which thermal conductivity is obtained from temperature gradient induced by applied current. We have found that the charge reservoir block (the block other than the CoO$_2$ block) dominates the thermal conduction, where a nano-block integration concept is effective for material design. We have further found that the thermal conductivity shows a small but finite in-plane anisotropy between $a$ and $b$ axes, which can be ascribed to the misfit structure., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, J. 14. Cream fur: a new mouse mutation that may cause unusual lipid metabolism

Abstract

A cream yellow coat color had been found in a breeding colony of albino mouse of strain CAL20. Genetic studies showed that the cream yellow coat color phenotype was regulated by a single recessive mutant gene on chromosome 13. The cream yellow hair was also found to have more fatty acid than normal hair and that the color was due to an unusual lipid metabolism. The locus was named cream fur locus and was given the symbol crf. It was also observed that recombination frequencies near the area of the crf locus were very different between male and female meiosis.

Abstract

The authors' data indicate that the L-mode to H-mode transition in the DIII-D tokamak is associated with the sudden reduction in anomalous, fluctuation-connected transport across the outer midplane of the plasma. In addition to the reduction in edge density and magnetic fluctuations observed at the transition, the edge radial electric field becomes more negative after the transition. They have determined the scaling of the H-mode power threshold with various plasma parameters; the roughly linear increase with plasma density and toroidal field are particularly significant. Control of the ELM frequency and duration by adjusting neutral beam input power has allowed us to produce H-mode plasmas with constant impurity levels and durations up to 5 s. Energy confinement time in ohmic H-mode plasmas and in deuterium H-mode plasmas with deuterium beam injection can exceed saturated ohmic confinement times by at least a factor of two. Energy confinement times above 0.3 s have been achieved in these beam-heated plasmas with plasma currents in the range of 2.0 to 2.5 MA. Local transport studies have shown that electron and ion thermal diffusivities and angular momentum diffusivity are comparable in magnitude and all decrease with increasing plasma current.

Abstract

An experiment to demonstrate the feasibility of using periodic structures achieve resonant attenuation of surface-acoustic-wave (SAW)propagation is presented. It involves the deposition of a planar array of microspheres on the surface piezoelectric crystal of a SAW filter that arrange themselves into a periodic system for resonant interaction. An analysis of the results reveals that the waves were mostly scattered by the array.

Abstract

Background: Gain-of-function (GOF) mutations in signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (STAT1) cause susceptibility to a range of infections, autoimmunity, immune dysregulation, and combined immunodeficiency. Disease manifestations can be mild or severe and life-threatening. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) has been used in some patients with more severe symptoms to treat and cure the disorder. However, the outcome of HSCT for this disorder is not well established. Objective: We sought to aggregate the worldwide experience of HSCT in patients with GOF-STAT1 mutations and to assess outcomes, including donor engraftment, overall survival, graft-versus-host disease, and transplant-related complications. Methods: Data were collected from an international cohort of 15 patients with GOF-STAT1 mutations who had undergone HSCT-using a variety of conditioning regimens and donor sources. Retrospective data collection allowed the outcome of transplantation to be assessed. In vitro functional testing was performed to confirm that each of the identified STAT1 variants was in fact a GOF mutation. Results: Primary donor engraftment in this cohort of 15 patients with GOF-STAT1 mutations was 74%, and overall survival was only 40%. Secondary graft failure was common (50%), and posttransplantation event-free survival was poor (10% by 100 days). Asubset of patients had hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis before transplant, contributing to their poor outcomes. Conclusion: Our data indicate that HSCT for patients with GOF-STAT1 mutations is curative but has significant risk of secondary graft failure and death.
