In magnetically ordered insulators, elementary quasiparticles manifest as spin waves - collective motions of localized magnetic moments propagating through the lattice - observed via inelastic neutron scattering. In effective spin-1/2 systems where geometric frustrations suppress static magnetic order, spin excitation continua can emerge, either from degenerate classical spin ground states or from entangled quantum spins characterized by emergent gauge fields and deconfined fractionalized excitations. Comparing the spin Hamiltonian with theoretical models can unveil the microscopic origins of these zero-field spin excitation continua. Here, we use neutron scattering to study spin excitations of the two-dimensional (2D) triangular-lattice effective spin-1/2 antiferromagnet CeMgAl11O19. Analyzing the spin waves in the field-polarized ferromagnetic state, we find that the spin Hamiltonian is close to an exactly solvable 2D triangular-lattice XXZ model, where degenerate 120$^\circ$ ordered ground states - umbrella states - develop in the zero temperature limit. We then find that the observed zero-field spin excitation continuum matches the calculated ensemble of spin waves from the umbrella state manifold, and thus conclude that CeMgAl11O19 is the first example of an exactly solvable spin liquid on a triangular lattice where the spin excitation continuum arises from the ground state degeneracy., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

Fractional magnetisation plateaus, in which the magnetisation is pinned at a fraction of its saturated value within a range of external magnetic field, are spectacular macroscopic manifestations of the collective quantum behaviours. One prominent example of the plateau phase is found in spin-1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnets featuring strong geometrical frustration, and is often interpreted as quantum-fluctuation-stabilised state in magnetic field via the "order-by-disorder" mechanism. Here, we observe an unprecedented 1/3 magnetisation plateau between 5.2 and 7.4 T at 2 K in a spin-1 antiferromagnet Na$_3$Ni$_2$BiO$_6$ with a honeycomb lattice, where conventionally no geometrical frustration is anticipated. By carrying out elastic neutron scattering measurements, we propose the spin structure of the plateau phase to be an unusual partial spin-flop ferrimagnetic order, transitioning from the zigzag antiferromagnetic order in zero field. Our theoretical calculations show that the plateau phase is stabilised by the bond-anisotropic Kitaev interaction. The Kitaev model, a honeycomb network of spins with bond-dependent anisotropic interactions, is a rare example of having a quantum spin liquid ground state. Although most Kitaev model candidate materials eventually order magnetically due to inevitable non-Kitaev terms, their bond-dependent anisotropy manifests in unusual spin dynamics. It has recently been suggested that bond-dependent anisotropy can stabilise novel magnetic phases and exotic spin dynamics on the geometrically frustrated triangular lattice. However, few materials have been identified with simultaneous geometric frustration and bond-dependent anisotropy. Here, we report a frustrated triangular lattice with bond-dependent anisotropy in the cobalt-based triangular van der Waals antiferromagnet CoI2. Its momentum and energy-resolved spin dynamics exhibit substantial magnon breakdown and complex level repulsion, as measured by inelastic neutron scattering. A thorough examination of excitations in both the paramagnetic and magnetically ordered states reveals that the bond-dependent anisotropy is the origin of the spiral order and the magnon breakdown found in CoI2. Quantum spin liquid (QSL) is a disordered state of quantum-mechanically entangled spins commonly arising from frustrated magnetic dipolar interactions. However, QSL in some pyrochlore magnets can also come from frustrated magnetic octupolar interactions. Although the key signature for both dipolar and octupolar interaction-driven QSL is the presence of a spin excitation continuum (spinons) arising from the spin quantum number fractionalization, an external magnetic field-induced ferromagnetic order will transform the spinons into conventional spin waves in a dipolar QSL. By contrast, in an octupole QSL, the spin waves carry octupole moments that do not couple, in the leading order, to the external magnetic field or to neutron moments but will contribute to the field dependence of the heat capacity. Here we use neutron scattering to show that the application of a large external magnetic field to Ce2Zr2O7, an octupolar QSL candidate, induces an Anderson-Higgs transition by condensing the spinons into a static ferromagnetic ordered state with octupolar spin waves invisible to neutrons but contributing to the heat capacity. Our theoretical calculations also provide a microscopic, qualitative understanding for the presence of octupole scattering at large wavevectors in Ce2Sn2O7 pyrochlore, and its absence in Ce2Zr2O7. Therefore, our results identify Ce2Zr2O7 as a strong candidate for an octupolar U (1) QSL, establishing that frustrated magnetic octupolar interactions are responsible for QSL properties in Ce-based pyrochlore magnets.

We have investigated the origin of the magnetic dipole correlations $\langle \sigma_{\boldsymbol{Q}}^z \sigma_{\boldsymbol{-Q}}^z \rangle$ characterized by the modulation wave vector $\boldsymbol{k} \sim (\tfrac{1}{2},\tfrac{1}{2},\tfrac{1}{2})$ observed in the frustrated pyrochlore magnet Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+y}$. This magnetic short-range order cannot be accounted for by adding further-neighbor exchange interactions to the nearest-neighbor pseudospin-$\tfrac{1}{2}$ Hamiltonian for quantum pyrochlore magnets. Using classical Monte Carlo simulation and quantum simulation based on thermally pure quantum (TPQ) states we have shown that the spin correlations with $\boldsymbol{k} \sim (\tfrac{1}{2},\tfrac{1}{2},\tfrac{1}{2})$ are induced at low temperatures by a three-spin interaction of a form $\sigma_{\boldsymbol{r}}^{\pm} \sigma_{\boldsymbol{r}^{\prime}}^z \sigma_{\boldsymbol{r}^{\prime \prime}}^z $, which is a correction to the Hamiltonian due to the low crystal-field excitation. Simulations using TPQ states have shown that the spin correlations coexist with electric quadrupole correlations $\langle \sigma_{\boldsymbol{Q}}^{\alpha} \sigma_{\boldsymbol{-Q}}^{\beta} \rangle$ ($\alpha, \beta = x, y$) with $\boldsymbol{k} \sim \boldsymbol{0}$. These results suggest that the putative quantum spin liquid state of Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+y}$ is located close to phase boundaries of the spin-ice, quadrupole-ordered, and magnetic-ordered states in the classical approximation, and that the three-spin interaction brings about a quantum disordered ground state with both spin and quadrupole correlations., Comment: 28 pages, 25 figures

We report thermodynamic and neutron scattering measurements of the triangular-lattice quantum Ising magnet TmMgGaO 4 in longitudinal magnetic fields. Our experiments reveal a quasi-plateau state induced by quantum fluctuations. This state exhibits an unconventional non-monotonic field and temperature dependence of the magnetic order and excitation gap. In the high field regime where the quantum fluctuations are largely suppressed, we observed a disordered state with coherent magnon-like excitations despite the suppression of the spin excitation intensity. Through detailed semi-classical calculations, we are able to understand these behaviors quantitatively from the subtle competition between quantum fluctuations and frustrated Ising interactions., Comment: Published version

For the skyrmion-hosting intermetallic Gd$_2$PdSi$_3$ with centrosymmetric hexagonal lattice and triangular net of rare earth sites, we report a thorough investigation of the magnetic phase diagram. Our work reveals a new magnetic phase with isotropic value of the critical field for all orientations, where the magnetic ordering vector $\mathbf{q}$ is depinned from its preferred directions in the basal plane. This is in contrast to the highly anisotropic behavior of the low field phases, such as the skyrmion lattice (SkL), which are easily destroyed by in-plane magnetic field. The bulk nature of the SkL and of other magnetic phases was evidenced by specific-heat measurements. Resistivity anisotropy, likely originating from partial gapping of the density of states along $\mathbf{q}$ in this RKKY magnet, is picked up via the planar Hall effect (PHE). The PHE confirms the single-$\mathbf{q}$ nature of the magnetic order when the field is in the hexagonal plane, and allows to detect the preferred directions of $\mathbf{q}$. Superconductivity mediated by phonons is typically conventional, exhibiting a momentum-independent s-wave pairing function, due to the isotropic interactions between electrons and phonons along different crystalline directions. Here, by performing inelastic neutron scattering measurements on a superconducting single crystal of Sr0.1Bi2Se3, a prime candidate for realizing topological superconductivity by doping the topological insulator Bi2Se3, we find that there exist highly anisotropic phonons, with the linewidths of the acoustic phonons increasing substantially at long wavelengths, but only for those along the [001] direction. This observation indicates a large and singular electron-phonon coupling at small momenta, which we propose to give rise to the exotic p-wave nematic superconducting pairing in the MxBi2Se3 (M = Cu, Sr, Nb) superconductor family. Therefore, we show these superconductors to be example systems where electron-phonon interaction can induce more exotic superconducting pairing than the s-wave, consistent with the topological superconductivity., Comment: Published in Nature Communications

Low-energy incommensurate (IC) magnetic fluctuations in the multiband superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is investigated by high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering measurements and random phase approximation (RPA) calculations. Below $T_\text{c}$, the substantial spin gap is observed at $\mathbf{Q}_\text{IC}=(0.3, 0.3, L)$ where the quasi-one-dimensional $\alpha$ and $\beta$ sheets consisting of the Fermi surfaces are in good nesting conditions. $L$ modulated intensity of the low-energy IC magnetic fluctuations and our RPA calculations indicate that the superconducting gaps regarding the $\alpha$ and $\beta$ sheets have the horizontal line nodes., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments have been conducted to investigate the semimetal system Yb$_3$Ir$_4$Ge$_{13}$. No clear crystal-field-split levels were observed up to an excitation energy of 60 meV, while a magnetic excitation appears at low energy below approximately 3 meV. This excitation shows a short spatial correlation, and an energy spectrum is reproduced by an imaginary part of generalized magnetic susceptibility on the basis of a damped harmonic oscillator model. The magnetic excitation emerges simultaneously with an anomalous electrical-resistivity enhancement below 20 K. The close relationship between the magnetic and transport behaviors evidences that the semimetal carriers are scattered by magnetic fluctuation dominated by the Yb $4f$ state., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The search for topological insulators has been actively promoted in the field of condensed matter physics for further development in energy-efficient information transmission and processing. In this context, recent studies have revealed that not only electrons but also bosonic particles such as magnons can construct edge states carrying nontrivial topological invariants. Here we demonstrate topological triplon bands in the spin-1/2 two-dimensional dimerized quantum antiferromagnet Ba$_2$CuSi$_2$O$_6$Cl$_2$, which is closely related to a pseudo-one-dimensional variant of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, through inelastic neutron scattering experiments. The excitation spectrum exhibits two triplon bands and a clear band gap between them due to a small alternation in interdimer exchange interactions along the $a$-direction, which is consistent with the crystal structure. The presence of topologically protected edge states is indicated by a bipartite nature of the lattice., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

Magnetic excitations of the effective spin $S$=1/2 dimerized magnet Ba$_2$CoSi$_2$O$_6$Cl$_2$ have been probed directly via inelastic neutron scattering experiments at temperatures down to 4 K. We observed five types of excitation at 4.8, 5.8, 6.6, 11.4, and 14.0 meV, which are all dispersionless within the resolution limits. The scattering intensities of the three low-lying excitations were found to exhibit different $Q$-dependences. Detailed analysis has demonstrated that Ba$_2$CoSi$_2$O$_6$Cl$_2$ is a two-dimensional spin dimer system described only by a single dimer site, where the triplet excitations are localized owing to the almost perfect frustration of the interdimer exchange interactions and the undimerized spins, even in small concentration, make an essential contribution to the excitation spectrum., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Spin correlations of the frustrated pyrochlore oxide Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+y}$ have been investigated by using inelastic neutron scattering on single crystalline samples ($x=-0.007, 0.000,$ and $0.003$), which have the putative quantum-spin-liquid (QSL) or electric-quadrupolar ground states. Spin correlations, which are notably observed in nominally elastic scattering, show short-ranged correlations around $L$ points [$q = (\tfrac{1}{2},\tfrac{1}{2},\tfrac{1}{2})$], tiny antiferromagnetic Bragg scattering at $L$ and $\Gamma$ points, and pinch-point type structures around $\Gamma$ points. The short-ranged spin correlations were analyzed using a random phase approximation (RPA) assuming the paramagnetic state and two-spin interactions among Ising spins. These analyses have shown that the RPA scattering intensity well reproduces the experimental data using temperature and $x$ dependent coupling constants of up to 10-th neighbor site pairs. This suggests that no symmetry breaking occurs in the QSL sample, and that a quantum treatment beyond the semi-classical RPA approach is required. We report experimental and theoretical evidence that Rb$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$ has a nonmagnetic tetramer ground state of a two-leg ladder comprising antiferromagnetically coupled frustrated spin-$1/2$ chains and exhibits a Haldane spin gap of emergent spin-1 pairs. Three spin excitations split from the spin-1 triplet by a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction are identified in inelastic neutron-scattering and electron spin resonance spectra. The ground states of the frustrated pyrochlore oxide Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+y}$ have been studied by inelastic neutron scattering experiments. Three single-crystal samples are investigated; one shows no phase transition ($x=-0.007

Magnetic properties of a one-dimensional frustrated quantum spin system Rb2Cu2Mo3O12 is investigated by the muon spin relaxation (muSR) technique. Although this system shows an incommensurate spin correlation in neutron scattering, it has not yet been determined whether the ground state reaches to a nonmagnetic spin-singlet state or not. In this study, our zero-field (ZF) muSR result undoubtedly reveals a nonmagnetic ground state, which establishes formation of the nonmagnetic incommensurate spin-singlet state in combination of the previous neutron scattering study. Furthermore, we found that the internal field is slightly enhanced below ~7 K. This temperature dependence resembles that of electric polarization under the magnetic field reported recently, indicating a possibility that a small change occurs even under ZF. In longitudinal-field measurements, a fast fluctuation around a narrowing region is observed. The nuclear and magnetic structure and full magnon dispersions of yttrium iron garnet Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ have been studied by neutron scattering. The refined nuclear structure is distorted to a trigonal space group of $R\bar{3}$. The highest-energy dispersion extends up to 86 meV. The observed dispersions are reproduced by a simple model with three nearest-neighbor-exchange integrals between 16$a$ (octahedral) and 24$d$ (tetrahedral) sites, $J_{aa}$, $J_{ad}$, and $J_{dd}$, which are estimated to be 0.00$\pm$0.05, $-$2.90$\pm$0.07, and $-$0.35$\pm$0.08 meV, respectively. The lowest-energy dispersion below 14 meV exhibits a quadratic dispersion as expected from ferromagnetic magnons. The imaginary part of $q$-integrated dynamical spin susceptibility $\chi$"($E$) exhibits a square-root energy-dependence in the low energies. The magnon density of state is estimated from the $\chi$"($E$) obtained on an absolute scale. The value is consistent with a single polarization mode for the magnon branch expected theoretically., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

When magnons and phonons, the fundamental quasiparticles of the solid, are coupled to one another, they form a new hybrid quasi-particle, leading to novel phenomena and interesting applications. Despite its wide-ranging importance, however, detailed experimental studies on the underlying Hamiltonian is rare for actual materials. Moreover, the anharmonicity of such magnetoelastic excitations remains largely unexplored although it is essential for a proper understanding of their diverse thermodynamic behaviour as well as intrinsic zero-temperature decay. Here we show that in noncollinear antiferromagnets, a strong magnon-phonon coupling can significantly enhance the anharmonicity, resulting in the creation of magnetoelastic excitations and their spontaneous decay. By measuring the spin waves over the full Brillouin zone and carrying out anharmonic spin wave calculations using a Hamiltonian with an explicit magnon-phonon coupling, we have identified a hybrid magnetoelastic mode in (Y,Lu)MnO3 and quantified its decay rate and the exchange-striction coupling term required to produce it. Our work has wide implications for understanding of the spin-phonon coupling and the resulting excitations of the broad classes of noncollinear magnets.

Elementary excitations of the S=1/2 one-dimensional antiferromagnet KCuGaF_6 were investigated by inelastic neutron scattering in zero and finite magnetic fields perpendicular to the (1, 1, 0) plane combined with specific heat measurements. KCuGaF$_6$ exhibits no long-range magnetic ordering down to 50 mK despite the large exchange interaction J/k_B=103 K. At zero magnetic field, well-defined spinon excitations were observed. The energy of the des Cloizeaux and Pearson mode of the spinon excitations is somewhat larger than that calculated with the above exchange constant. This discrepancy is mostly ascribed to the effective XY anisotropy arising from the large Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction with an alternating D vector. KCuGaF_6 in a magnetic field is represented by the quantum sine-Gordon model, for which low-energy elementary excitations are composed of solitons, antisolitons and their bound states called breathers. Unlike the theoretical prediction, it was found that the energy of a soliton is smaller than that of the first breather, although the energy of the first breather coincides with that observed in a previous ESR measurement., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. We performed inelastic neutron scattering experiments on Cu$_2$$^{114}$Cd$^{11}$B$_2$O$_6$ powder. The magnetic excitations at low temperatures are similar to those of the interacting spin-1/2 tetramers in the ordered state. The weak excitations existing above 3 meV suggest that the Higgs mode appears in Cu$_2$CdB$_2$O$_6$ at ambient pressure and zero magnetic field. We evaluated $J_1 = 27.3 \pm 1.0$ and $J_2 = -14.0 \pm 1.4$ meV for the intra-tetramer interactions and $J_3 = -0.4 \pm 0.2$ and $J_4 = 1.4 \pm 0.2$ meV for the inter-tetramer interactions. The spin gap in the isolated spin tetramer was calculated to be 1.6 meV, which is less than the effective inter-tetramer interaction value ($3.6 \pm 0.8$ meV). Therefore, antiferromagnetic long-range order is possible, although the ground state of the isolated spin tetramer is the spin-singlet state.
