BackgroundLifestyle modification in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is key to improving health outcomes. Mobile health technologies may offer potential effective and efficient health care support to facilitate self-management. ObjectiveThis study aims to develop a lifestyle coaching intervention using a mobile app for patients with NAFLD and evaluate physiological and psychological health outcomes for 6 months. MethodsThis study was a randomized controlled trial. The personalized lifestyle coaching intervention using a mobile app was developed through established guidelines and literature reviews. This intervention consisted of information on NAFLD management, diet and physical activity self-monitoring, and coaching sessions based on patient records and SMS text messages. A total of 102 individuals were enrolled in the study and randomly assigned to the intervention group (n=48) or the control group (n=54). The outcomes were improvements in physiological (weight, liver fat score, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine transferase, and gamma-glutamyl transferase) and clinical outcomes (self-management, NAFLD self-management knowledge, self-efficacy, fatigue, depression, and quality of life). Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis and a linear mixed model to test the effects of the intervention. ResultsAll participants completed the study. The mean age of the participants was 48.9 (SD 13.74) years, 38.2% (39/102) were female participants, and 65.7% (67/102) were married. 3. Real-time online point-of-view filming education for teaching clinical skills to medical students

Purpose This study aimed to measure the educational satisfaction with and effectiveness of real-time online point-of-view filming (POVF) clinical skills education in medical students. Methods Medical students participated in a 120-minute clinical skills education session. The session consisted of emergency procedures, wound management, and vascular access. The authors provided real-time online POVF using a smartphone. A questionnaire survey was issued to the students after the class, and their satisfaction with education, educational environment, and effectiveness were analyzed. Results Responses about satisfaction with POVF education were very positive in all grades. However, approximately half of the students were satisfied with the smoothness of listening to a lecture and the video quality. More than half of the students responded positively to the question about educational effectiveness. Conclusion In these times of non-classroom teaching brought on by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, POVF clinical skills education is likely to be a very useful educational tool. If disadvantages such as insufficient feedback or environmental problems can be addressed, it could serve as an alternative method of clinical skills education even after the COVID-19 pandemic.

BackgroundThe prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is increasing in parallel with the epidemic of obesity and metabolic syndrome. Lifestyle modification is a crucial strategy for the treatment of NAFLD, which can lead to a reduction in liver fat with concomitant weight loss. The use of eHealth technologies is an effective approach to improve health outcomes in patients as they do not have any time and space limitations. ObjectiveThis study aimed to evaluate published eHealth intervention studies for the improvement of lifestyle modifications among patients with NAFLD and to provide recommendations for future studies. MethodsWe conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis. Five electronic databases (PubMed, Cochrane Central, CINAHL, Embase, and Web of Science) were searched for studies reporting the effect of lifestyle modification intervention using eHealth in patients with NAFLD published from inception to November 3, 2022. Study selection, data extraction, and quality assessment were performed by 3 researchers independently. The quality of included studies was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias tool and the Risk of Bias Assessment Tool for Nonrandomized Studies. ResultsIn total, 2688 records were identified, and 41 full-text articles were assessed. Seven studies were included in the systematic review. The participants of all interventions were 1257 individuals with NAFLD, and the mean age ranged from 38.3 to 57.9 years. The duration of the interventions was 3-24 months, and all interventions were categorized into 3 types: internet-based computers, telephones, and mobile apps. Of these, 4 studies were randomized controlled trials and were included in the meta-analysis: 3 studies for body weight and BMI and 4 studies for alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). According to the meta-analysis, clear improvements in BMI (P=.02; 95% CI –1.01 to –0.10), AST (P=.02; 95% CI –1.22 to –0.13), and ALT (P=.01; 95% CI –1.28 to –0.15) were observed in the eHealth intervention as compared with the control groups. ConclusionsLifestyle modification interventions using eHealth technologies are significantly effective for BMI, AST, and ALT in patients with NAFLD. Future research should conduct interventions with larger sample sizes and evaluate whether these interventions have sustained benefits, and how we can make these eHealth methods most effective on a large scale.

5. Evaluation of usefulness of smart device-based testing: a survey study of Korean medical students

Purpose This study aims to understand the characteristics of smart device-based testing (SBT) by comparing the typical characteristics of students’ satisfaction with SBT, its usefulness, advantages, and disadvantages when compared with existing testing methods. Methods A total of 250 students from the first to third year were selected as the final targets of the study and the questionnaire was developed by faculty members who participated in the survey from the start of the SBT. The total number of questions is 12, and the questionnaire used a 4-point scale. The data obtained were analyzed using the IBM SPSS ver. 23.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, USA). Results Answers to the “satisfaction with SBT” were generally negative, while answers to the “usefulness of SBT” were generally positive. There was no difference in satisfaction across gender and smart device ownership, whereas there were significant differences across years. With reference to the usefulness of SBT, students responded positively, while about the overall configuration and completeness of SBT, students responded negatively. Students also seemed to show a greater preference toward the pencil-paper test. Conclusion On the other hand, students generally thought that SBT helped to assess medical knowledge better and was a more objective method of knowledge assessment than a pencil-paper test. We believe that students preferred the traditional paper-pencil test due to their unfamiliarity with SBT. We believe that an appropriate and careful remedy for drawbacks of the SBT will have a significant impact in the accumulation of actual clinical knowledge and in the improvement of practical skills for medical students.

6. Public Health Center on Tuberculosis Management in Korea: From 1945 to the Late 1970s

Tuberculosis (TB) was called “ruinous disease” in colonial Korea. However, it is no longer a threat to the lives of the Korean people. Public Health Centers (PHC) have played a role in the reduction of TB prevalence by providing free medical treatment and vaccination. PHCs are valued highly for suggesting the possibility of TB suppression. Despite these outcomes, the achievements of PHCs may be slightly overstated from a therapeutic perspective. PHCs could not prevent and treat TB well in their conditions at the time in Korea. The concept of PHC in Korea that emphasizes prevention rather than treatment came from the US. There is a need to reevaluate the achievements of PHCs in TB control. The South Korean government established an anti-TB network system named “Health-Net” in 1962. PHCs were the primary institutions against TB. The “100,000 Tuberculosis Patients Registration Program” was conducted by the government through PHCs, which was an effective anti-TB program. The success of the registration program was a result of the effort by PHCs and anti-TB private organizations. Free medications distributed by PHCs helped to decrease mortality due to TB. The implementation of the “Tuberculosis Prevention Act” in 1968 strengthened the management function of PHCs. A larger anti-TB budget by the law made new prescriptions possible, including second-generation medications. It also enabled the recruitmen of more manpower for TB control, finding TB patients, and BCG vaccination. However, there were some limits of PHCs’ therapeutic role in these achievements. At first, the lower cure rate in patients receiving medical care at PHCs was a main problem. The fact that PHCs accounted for nationwide TB patients was another problem. It is unclear that PHCs had an active role in TB management. There were no specific TB treatment programs except the follow-up treatment dependent on the only one medication. PHCs in the 1960s and 1970s achieved the results of patient registration and free treatment in TB control, but there was a limit to their therapeutic function.

Purpose This study investigated the attitudes of Korean medical students about patient safety to determine which perspectives required increased focus in terms of educational development. Methods Attitudes were assessed using the Patient Safety Questionnaire, a tool designed to measure attitudes toward patient safety among medical students. Questionnaires were distributed to 580 clinical year students across four medical schools in December 2018. Results A total of 300 returned questionnaires were used in the final analysis. More than half of all respondents agreed (i.e., gave more than 4 out of 7 points) with most items and thoroughly considered the concept of patient safety. However, many students misperceived several items (e.g., professional incompetence as a cause of errors, disclosure responsibility, the importance of patient safety in the curriculum, and situational awareness). Conclusion Attitudes toward patient safety are highly important due to their substantial impacts on behavioral decisions in the clinical setting. As such, patient safety education should be designed to place greater emphasis on proper attitude. This study’s findings should be useful for medical instructors who wish to determine the appropriate areas of curricular focus.

8. The role of allergen-specific IgE in predicting allergic symptoms on dog and cat exposure among Korean pet exhibition participants

Background: The values of the skin prick test (SPT) and allergen-specific IgE (sIgE) measurement in predicting dog and cat allergies remain unclear. We aimed to evaluate the usefulness of SPT and sIgE measurement in predicting self-reported allergic symptoms during exposure to dogs and cats in Korean adults. Methods: A total of 552 participants in a pet exhibition in Korea completed questionnaires regarding exposure to dog or cat and the development of allergic symptoms during exposure. Study participants also underwent SPT using 3 different commercially available reagents, and had their blood drawn for measurement of serum total IgE and dog/cat-dander-IgE using ImmunoCAP®. Results: Measurement of sIgE for dog and cat dander allergens provided the highest positive and negative predictive values and sensitivity, but not specificity (58%, 87.2%, 67.9%, and 93.1% for allergic symptoms on dog exposure; 64.7%, 83.2%, 74.8%, and 88.9% for those on cat exposure, respectively), in predicting self-reported allergic symptoms on dog and cat exposure. The sIgE level consistently exhibited the highest area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (0.749 and 0.719 for allergic symptoms on dog and cat exposure, respectively). Careful interpretation of SPT and sIgE measurements maximized the positive and negative predictive values, sensitivity, and specificity for predicting allergic symptoms on dog exposure (71.4%, 87.3%, 75.3%, and 99.3%) and those on cat exposure (71.4%, 85.3%, 79.3%, and 98.9%). Conclusions: The measurement of dog and cat dander sIgE levels may be useful for the exclusion of allergic symptoms related to pet exposure. Collective interpretation of SPT and sIgE tests facilitates identification of allergic symptoms on dog or cat exposure, giving a better rule-in test result.

9. A study of satisfaction of medical students on their mentoring programs at one medical school in Korea

Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the awareness levels of medical students regarding the characteristics of each function within a mentoring program conducted within Kyung Hee University and to ultimately suggest points for reformation. Medical students’ awareness levels were determined using a 29-item questionnaire. Methods The questionnaire was conducted on 347 medical students, excluding 25 students who either marked multiple answers or did not reply. The assessment of the program was based on a questionnaire with the use of a 5-point Likert scale using SPSS version 22.0. Multiple regression was conducted to examine the relationship between the satisfaction level, regarding functions of mentoring programs, and characteristics of mentoring programs. Interviews were conducted to supplement additional information that was hard to gain from the questionnaire. Results The results on demographic and functional characteristics revealed that there was no statistically significant differences in satisfaction levels across gender, whereas there were significant differences across grade levels. In addition, there were significant differences in the frequency of meetings and topics of conversation while the length of meetings and meeting place were not significantly different. Conclusion For the improved mentoring programs for medical students, the program should focus on the frequency of meetings and the topics of conversation. Furthermore, mentoring programs of high quality can be expected if professors take interview results into consideration. Also, students want to be provided with psychosocial advice from mentors in various ways such as role model function.

10. A qualitative thematic content analysis of medical students’ essays on professionalism

Abstract Background Physicians in both Western and Eastern countries are being confronted by changes in health care delivery systems and medical professionalism values. The traditional concept of “In-Sul” (benevolent art) and the modern history of South Korea have led to cultural differences between South Korea and other countries in conceptualizing medical professionalism; thus, we studied medical students’ perceptions of professionalism as described in essays written on this topic. Methods In 2014, we asked 109 first-year medical students who were enrolled in a compulsory ethics course to anonymously write a description of an instance of medical professionalism that they had witnessed, as well as reflecting on their own professional context. We then processed 105 valid essays using thematic content analysis with computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software. Results Thematic analysis of the students’ essays revealed two core aspects of professionalism in South Korea, one focused on respect for patients and the other on physicians’ accountability. The most common theme regarding physician–patient relationships was trust. By contrast, distributive justice was thought to be a non-essential aspect of professionalism. Conclusions In Western countries, physicians tend to promote justice in the health care system, including fair distribution of medical resources; however, we found that medical students in South Korea were more inclined to emphasize doctors’ relationships with patients. Medical educators should develop curricular interventions regarding medical professionalism to meet the legitimate needs of patients in their own culture. Because professionalism is a dynamic construct of culture, medical educators should reaffirm cultural context-specific definitions of professionalism for development of associated curricula.

11. Reliability and validity test of the Korean version of Noe's evaluation

Purpose This study aims to demonstrate whether the functionalities between the widely used questionnaire in other countries and the Korean-translated version show similarity. Also, it intends to verify their reliability and validity. Methods The original questionnaire was first developed by professor Noe at the University of Minnesota with 29 items named as “mentoring functions” to identify the participants’ psychological and career-development functions. Using the Korean-translated version of the original questionnaire, the study was conducted on total 288 Kyung Hee University medical students, ranging from the first-year students to the third-year students on December 2015. In order to investigate if the survey form could be applied to the Korean participants, exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were conducted, using varimax rotation. Cronbach α statistics and the figures of standardized regression weights were analyzed respectively to indicate construct, convergent, and discriminant validities. Results The result of exploratory factor analysis shows there are a total of three functions, including the additional “friendship function” (Eigen value, 1.152; significant level if higher than 1.0) with its high emphasis. The result of confirmatory factor analysis also demonstrates the similarity (p=0.000). As the whole reliability scale of the three functions is significantly high (Cronbach α , 0.971), each reliability scales of the three functions are shown to be high (0.814–0.955) as well. Conclusion The model, with its three functions, proved the significant statistics regarding the reliability and validity. According to this ground, the conclusion is that the adapted questionnaire used in this study could be applied to Korean medical students.

12. Specialty choice preference of medical students according to personality traits by Five-Factor Model

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between personality traits, using the Five-Factor Model, and characteristics and motivational factors affecting specialty choice in Korean medical students. Methods: A questionnaire survey of Year 4 medical students (n=110) in July 2015 was administered. We evaluated the personality traits of Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, and Openness by using the Korean version of Big Five Inventory. Questions about general characteristics, medical specialties most preferred as a career, motivational factors in determining specialty choice were included. Data between five personality traits and general characteristics and motivational factors affecting specialty choice were analyzed using Student t-test, Mann-Whitney test and analysis of variance. Results: Of the 110 eligible medical students, 105 (95.4% response rate) completed the questionnaire. More Agreeableness students preferred clinical medicine to basic medicine (p=0.010) and more Openness students preferred medical departments to others (p=0.031). Personal interest was the significant motivational factors in more Openness students (p=0.003) and Conscientiousness students (p=0.003). Conclusion: Medical students with more Agreeableness were more likely to prefer clinical medicine and those with more Openness preferred medical departments. Personal interest was a significant influential factor determining specialty choice in more Openness and Conscientiousness students. These findings may be helpful to medical educators or career counselors in the specialty choice process.

13. Treadmill Exercise Improves Memory Function Depending on Circadian Rhythm Changes in Mice

Purpose Exercise enhances memory function by increasing neurogenesis in the hippocampus, and circadian rhythms modulate synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus. The circadian rhythm-dependent effects of treadmill exercise on memory function in relation with neurogenesis were investigated using mice. Methods The step-down avoidance test was used to evaluate short-term memory, the 8-arm maze test was used to test spatial learning ability, and 5-bromo-2’-deoxyuridine immunofluorescence was used to assess neurogenesis. Western blotting was also performed to assess levels of synaptic plasticity-associated proteins, such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor, tyrosine kinase receptor B, phosphorylated cAMP response element-binding protein, early growth response protein 1, postsynaptic density protein 95, and growth-associated protein 43. The mice in the treadmill exercise at zeitgeber 1 group started exercising 1 hour after sunrise, the mice in the treadmill exercise at zeitgeber 6 group started exercising 6 hours after sunrise, and the mice in the treadmill exercise at zeitgeber 13 group started exercising 1 hour after sunset. The mice in the exercise groups were forced to run on a motorized treadmill for 30 minutes once a day for 7 weeks. Results Treadmill exercise improved short-term memory and spatial learning ability, and increased hippocampal neurogenesis and the expression of synaptic plasticity-associated proteins. These effects of treadmill exercise were stronger in mice that exercised during the day or in the evening than in mice that exercised at dawn. Conclusions Treadmill exercise improved memory function by increasing neurogenesis and the expression of synaptic plasticity-associated proteins. These results suggest that the memory-enhancing effect of treadmill exercise may depend on circadian rhythm changes.

18. Atypical Autoerotic Death Due to Insertion of a Foreign Body into the Urethra and Rectum

Autoerotic death is an accidental death during sexual pleasure, usually caused by a device or equipment used to enhance pleasure. Autoerotic deaths can be classified as typical or atypical. Typical autoerotic deaths occur due to asphyxiation by mechanical compression, while atypical autoerotic deaths occur by means other than asphyxiation. Narcissism-associated accidental deaths during tube and wire insertion into the urethra and rectum are extremely rare. The victim, a man in his 40s, was found dead at his home. Several tools for masturbation and wires for urethral and rectal insertion were observed around the victim and many pornographic videos were also identified. Family accounts and medical records indicated that he masturbated often by inserting plastic tubes and wires into the urethra and rectum. Moreover, the victim had a history of surgeries to remove foreign objects from the urethra and rectum as well as a history of psychiatric treatment. The autopsy results revealed no specific findings indicative of the cause of death. In conclusion, the investigators determined the cause of death as an atypical autoerotic death based on the death scene investigation, autoerotic sexual behavior, personal history, and autopsy results.

Monoclonal antibodies are pure antibodies that react to a specific epitope. Plasmapheresis is a treatment that separates and eliminates disease-causing substances before replacing the blood with plasma. Plasmapheresis has insufficient evidence for treating new-onset refractory status epilepticus (NORSE). Sequential plasmaphereses gradually improved a female cryptogenic NORSE patient who did not benefit from monoclonal antibody treatment.

As for the research method, the quantitative text network and qualitative analyses from industry experts were used to interpret the results. A total of 14,752 news data mentioning software manpower were extracted, and data pre-processing for the synonyms and negative words were performed. The network was non-directional and consisted of 14,074 words (nodes) and 1,542,383 word combinations (edges). In addition, the network was clustered based on Modularity, and the degree of connection and eigenvector centrality were used to determine the importance of nodes. The analysis of the results showed that the government’s efforts through the Korean Ministry of Science and ICT were vital in creating jobs that fueled software innovation growth, and that software education was actively promoted to develop software talent. This study had the following implications. It was confirmed that software is making a high contribution to the expansion of business opportunities and job creation in the fields of new technology and software convergence technology. To resolve the software manpower supply-demand mismatch, it is necessary to cultivate high-quality software talent and provide mid- to long-term activities to attract competent human resources. In addition, it is necessary to develop and expand programs that link education and recruitment in terms of public-private cooperation along with government-led investment to strengthen national software competitiveness.

Introduction To our knowledge, there have been studies actively looking for patients with suspected SA in the Stroke Unit (SU), but most of them were conducted using a portable polysomnography (PSG), and no study has performed Level 1 PSG (L1PSG) to date. We conducted L1PSG to the acute stroke patients selected in the SU, and conducted L1PSG to patients who visited the Neurology Outpatient Clinic (NOC) with subjective SA symptoms at the same time. By comparison, we tried to find out the SA characteristics of acute stroke patients. Methods This study was conducted on patients admitted to SU from April 1, 2021 to October 31, 2022, and patients who visited NOC during the same period and underwent L1PSG. Among patients admitted to the SU, trained night shift nurses selected patients with SA symptoms with a modified mallampati score of 3 or higher. Cases under intracranial pressure control or other interventions were excluded. Outpatients were enrolled in patients who underwent L1PSG by visiting the NOC to examine only SA. The results of the pre-sleep questionnaire and L1PSG were compared. Results Of a total of 829 stroke patients admitted to SU, 31 SU patients received L1PSG, and during the same period, 74 patients received L1PSG for SA testing at NOC. The average age of SU and NOC was 56 and 57 years, and the median BMI was 26.9 and 26.4. In the survey, the ISI (7 vs 12, p=0.04) and PSQI (5 vs 7, p=0.021) scores were statistically significantly higher in NOC patients. As a result of the L1PSG, AHI (38.8 vs 23.1, p=0.027), AHI in Supine (59.3 vs 25.6, p=0.004) and NonREM AHI (36.3 vs 20.9, p=0.027) were statistically significantly higher in SU patients. Conclusion Patients screened SA at SU overlooked their symptom and thought their sleep quality was better than that of NOC patients, but the actual AHI was higher. In particular, acute stroke patients show a large difference in AHI in supine compared to NOC, so lateral position can be recommended when absolute bed rest is needed in situations where SA is suspected in SU. Background Non-invasive painless signaling therapy (NPST) is an electro-cutaneous treatment that converts endogenous pain information into synthetic non-pain information. This study explored whether pain improvement by NPST in failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS) patients is related to cerebral modulation. Methods Electroencephalography (EEG) analysis was performed in 11 patients with FBSS. Subjects received daily NPST for 5 days. Before the first treatment, patients completed the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) and Beck Depression Inventory and underwent baseline EEG. After the final treatment, they responded again to the BPI, reported the percent pain improvement (PPI), and then underwent post-treatment EEG. If the PPI grade was zero, they were assigned to the ineffective group, while all others were assigned to the effective group. We used standardized low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography (sLORETA) to explore the EEG current-source distribution (CSD) associated with pain improvement by NPST. Results The 11 participants had a median age of 67.0 years, and 63.6% were female. The sLORETA images revealed a beta-2 CSD increment in 12 voxels of the right anterior cingulate gyrus (ACG) and the right medial frontal area. The point of maximal CSD changes was in the right ACG. The alpha band CSD increased in 2 voxels of the left transverse gyrus. Conclusions Pain improvement by NPST in FBSS patients was associated with increased cerebral activity, mainly in the right ACG. The change in afferent information induced by NPST seems to be associated with cerebral pain perception.

Self-management is critical and essential for controlling non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, delaying progression, and preventing complications. However, information about the self-management characteristics of this population is scarce. This study explores the characteristics and self-management levels and the factors associated with self-management in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in Korea. A convenience sample of 150 patients diagnosed with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease was recruited from April to November 2019. Demographics and clinical findings were collected, and self-management, self-efficacy, fatigue, and depressive symptoms were assessed using questionnaires. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to examine the factors associated with self-management. Self-management levels were moderate (Mean = 3.4, SD = 0.61). Self-management differed significantly by age, sex, marital status, occupation, and health education experience. Self-efficacy (β = 0.074, p = 0.020) showed a significant association with self-management, which explained 25.0% of the variance after controlling for age, sex, marital status, health education experience, occupation, controlled attenuation parameter score, and body mass index. Self-efficacy is a critical determinant of self-management among patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The study findings could assist healthcare professionals in facilitating self-management compliance and developing multidisciplinary team-based interventions for sustainable self-management.

Study Objectives Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep without atonia (RWA) is essential for diagnosing REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD). Manual and automatic quantifications of RWA that use different criteria have been validated. This study compared the RWA quantification methods for diagnosing RBD. Methods The PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases were systemically searched for studies published from inception to December 2021. The inclusion criteria were cohort, cross-sectional, and case-control studies assessing the sensitivity and specificity of RWA quantification methods. Pooled estimates of the sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic odds ratio (DOR), and area under the curve (AUC) were determined. Risk of bias and certainty of evidence was assessed using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies tool and the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations framework, respectively. Results Fourteen articles including 402 patients with RBD met the inclusion criteria. Manual methods evaluating any chin and phasic flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) activity had the highest DOR (138.8, 95% CI = 21.8% to 881.7%) and AUC (0.9686). The automatic REM atonia index (RAI) showed similar or higher sensitivity (89.1%, 95% CI = 84.6% to 92.7%) but a lower specificity (73.5%), DOR (43.1), and AUC (0.9369) than the manual techniques. Conclusions In this meta-analysis, manual RWA quantification that employed chin or phasic FDS activity had the best RBD diagnostic performance. The automatic RAI method may be useful for screening patients with RBD. The results should be interpreted carefully because of the high risk of bias in patient selection and significant heterogeneity among the studies. PROSPERO Registration number CRD42021276445.

Background Reflex and spontaneous movements are not uncommon in brain death patients. However, most studies have been conducted in adults, while reports in infants and children are rare. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the frequency and characteristics of these movements in pediatric patients declared as brain death. Methods Records of pediatric patients who were diagnosed as brain death from 15 hospitals in the Yeongnam region, South Korea, between January 2013 and September 2016 were analyzed. All body movements in patients who met the criteria for brain death as established by the Korea Medical Association were assessed by medical doctors and trained organ transplant coordinators. The frequency and characteristics of these movements were identified. Additionally, the demographic and clinical factors of the brain death patients with and without these movements were compared. Results A total of 31 patients who met the criteria for brain death were enrolled. Seven patients (22.6%) showed either reflex or spontaneous movements; six of them (85.7%) showed reflex movements only, and one patient (14.3%) showed both types of movements. The most common types of reflex movements were the flexor/extensor plantar response and isolated finger jerk. Four of seven patients (57.1%) showed a single movement pattern, while three (42.9%) showed two different movement patterns. Conclusion It is essential for physicians who perform pediatric brain death examinations to recognize the frequency and characteristics of reflex and spontaneous movements, and this article may help in the accurate and prompt diagnosis of brain death.

Background and purpose The increased demand for donor organs has made it crucial to keep the organs of patients with impending brain death (PWIBDs) suitable for transplantation during the process of determining brain death. This study aimed to identify the time taken to determine brain death (TT-BD) in PWIBDs and the associated influencing factors. Methods This study analyzed data collected by the Korean Organ Donation Agency from 15 hospitals in the Yeongnam region of South Korea. There were 414 PWIBDs eligible for inclusion in this study. The data consisted of the TT-BD for PWIBDs and the potential variables influencing the TT-BD. Results The mean age of the 414 PWIBDs was 48.9 years, and 120 of them were female (29.0%). The mean TT-BD was 8.5 days. The presence of spontaneous movements (SMs) and craniotomy significantly affected the TT-BD. The mean TT-BDs were 13.9 and 8.2 days in the PWIBDs with and without SMs, respectively, and 9.8 and 8.0 days in the PWIBDs with and without craniotomy, respectively. Conclusions The SMs in PWIBDs and a craniotomy performed immediately before starting the process of determining brain death seem to be related to lengthening the TT-BD.

Latency and amplitude are the measurement parameters of mismatch negativity (MMN). The values of the parameters vary sensitively with the stimulus paradigm. A paradigm using the frequency difference of sounds for the MMN study is well known. This study obtained the reference values of the parameters in healthy young adults by performing the MMN study using the frequency paradigm. The authors recruited ten healthy adults. Their average age was 25.5 years; three were female, and seven were male. On the auditory paradigm for the MMN study, the frequency of sound was 1000 Hz for the standard stimulus, and 1032 Hz for the deviant stimulus. The mean values of latency and amplitude of MMN were 202 ms and 1.88 μV at Fz, 207 ms, and 1.46 μV at Cz, 212 ms, and 1.10 μV at C3, and 214 ms and 1.45 μV at C4. There was no correlation between the latency and amplitude of MMN. This study presented the reference values of the latency and amplitude of the MMN using a standard paradigm that is easy to apply. This information may make the MMN useful for clinical applications and basic research.

Concern for patient safety underlies the need for interprofessional education (IPE). One way to measure the effectiveness of IPE is by measuring attitude change toward other healthcare professionals; however, there are currently no valid Korean tools to measure such a change in attitudes. Therefore, this study aims to develop and test a Korean version of the Interprofessional Attitudes Scale (IPAS). The original IPAS was translated into Korean according to the World Health Organization’s guidelines after obtaining permission from the article’s corresponding author. A total of 414 questionnaires were collected from third- and fourth-year medical and nursing students at four Korean institutions in December 2018. To analyze the validity of the Korean IPAS, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted. Cronbach’s α was used to evaluate reliability. Results from the exploratory factor analysis identified four functions: teamwork, community-centeredness, patient-centeredness, and respect for diversity. BACKGROUND The prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is increasing in parallel with the epidemic of obesity and metabolic syndrome. Lifestyle modification is a crucial strategy for the treatment of NAFLD, which can lead to a reduction in liver fat with concomitant weight loss. The use of eHealth technologies is an effective approach to improve health outcomes in patients as they do not have any time and space limitations. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate published eHealth intervention studies for the improvement of lifestyle modifications among patients with NAFLD and to provide recommendations for future studies. METHODS We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis. Five electronic databases (PubMed, Cochrane Central, CINAHL, EMBASE, and Web of Science) were searched for studies reporting the effect of lifestyle modification intervention using eHealth in patients with NAFLD published from inception to April 15, 2021. Study selection, data extraction, and quality assessment were performed by 3 researchers independently. The quality of included studies was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias tool and the Risk of Bias Assessment Tool for Nonrandomized Studies. RESULTS In total, 2506 records were identified, and 37 full-text articles were assessed. Six studies were included in the systematic review. The participants of all interventions were 1,217 individuals with NAFLD, and the mean age ranged from 38.3 to 57.9 years. The duration of the interventions was 6-24 weeks, and all interventions were categorized into 3 types: internet-based computers, telephones, and mobile applications. Of these, 4 studies were randomized controlled trials. Background The prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is increasing in parallel with the epidemic of obesity and metabolic syndrome. Lifestyle modification is a crucial strategy for the treatment of NAFLD, which can lead to a reduction in liver fat with concomitant weight loss. The use of eHealth technologies is an effective approach to improve health outcomes in patients as they do not have any time and space limitations. Objective This study aimed to evaluate published eHealth intervention studies for the improvement of lifestyle modifications among patients with NAFLD and to provide recommendations for future studies. Methods We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis. Five electronic databases (PubMed, Cochrane Central, CINAHL, Embase, and Web of Science) were searched for studies reporting the effect of lifestyle modification intervention using eHealth in patients with NAFLD published from inception to November 3, 2022. Study selection, data extraction, and quality assessment were performed by 3 researchers independently. The quality of included studies was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias tool and the Risk of Bias Assessment Tool for Nonrandomized Studies. Results In total, 2688 records were identified, and 41 full-text articles were assessed. Seven studies were included in the systematic review. The participants of all interventions were 1257 individuals with NAFLD, and the mean age ranged from 38.3 to 57.9 years. The duration of the interventions was 3-24 months, and all interventions were categorized into 3 types: internet-based computers, telephones, and mobile apps. Of these, 4 studies were randomized controlled trials and were included in the meta-analysis: 3 studies for body weight and BMI and 4 studies for alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). According to the meta-analysis, clear improvements in BMI (P=.02; 95% CI –1.01 to –0.10), AST (P=.02; 95% CI –1.22 to –0.13), and ALT (P=.01; 95% CI –1.28 to –0.15) were observed in the eHealth intervention as compared with the control groups. Conclusions Lifestyle modification interventions using eHealth technologies are significantly effective for BMI, AST, and ALT in patients with NAFLD. Future research should conduct interventions with larger sample sizes and evaluate whether these interventions have sustained benefits, and how we can make these eHealth methods most effective on a large scale.
