We have developed a new fabrication process to actuate microshutter arrays (MSA) electrostatically at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. The microshutters are fabricated on silicon with thin silicon nitride membranes. A pixel size of each microshutter is 100 x 200 micrometers 2. The microshutters rotate 90 degrees on torsion bars. The selected microshutters are actuated, held, and addressed electrostatically by applying voltages on the electrodes the front and back sides of the microshutters. The atomic layer deposition (ALD) of aluminum oxide was used to insulate electrodes on the back side of walls; the insulation can withstand over 100 V. The ALD aluminum oxide is dry etched, and then the microshutters are released in vapor HF.

Based on the Microshutter Array (MSA) subsystems developed at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), Next Generation Microshutter Array (NGMSA) has been developed to be used as multi-object selectors for future telescopes in space applications. Microshutter arrays function as transmission devices. Selected shutters fully open at 90 degrees permitting income light going through, while the rest of shutters keep closed. The programmable microshutter open and close make the device perform as a multi object selector that can be used on space telescopes. Utilizing a multi object selector, the telescope efficiency can be increased to 100 times or more. Like JWST MSAs, NGMSA features torsion hinges, light shields, front and back electrodes for shutter actuation, latch, and closing. The difference is that JWST MSA utilized the magnetic actuation while NGMSA the electrostatic actuation.

For use in cryogenic applications such as bolometer and x-ray microcalorimeter arrays, pre-amplifying Junction Field Effect Transistors (JFETs) are often required for the readout electronics. The optimum operating temperature of the JFETs is 130 Kelvin while the cryogenic detectors operate in the milli-Kelvin range. Thus, the JFETs must be heated up but thermally isolated from the surrounding cryogenic instruments. In the past, the thermal isolation was accomplished by suspending the JFETs with low conductance wires such as manganium or stainless steel on a Kevlar support platform [I]. This also achieved electrical connections. However, this assembly required manual soldering work, which could raise a reliability issue for the cryogenic applications. In order to eliminate the manual work, polyimide micro-wires were developed [2]. The wires must be of sufficient length to decrease the heat load and in tension to prevent microphonic noise from vibration of the wires: the polyimide wires were patterned into llS"shaped curves over a thin metal wires such as aluminum, titanium, or niobium. The bilayer of the films were then suspended by etching silicon substrate thus to make freestanding air bridges (enough explanation?). In this paper, we present a method to fabricate micromachined JFET mechanical modules suspended by polyimide Pyraline micro-wires and heated up with built-in aluminum micro-heaters.

Introduction: Denys-Drash Syndrome (DDS) consists of a triad of pseudohermaphroditism, Wilms’tumor and nephropathy. This condition may manifest as a complete triad or in an incomplete form; with either one or a combination of the above features. The characteristic glomerular abnormality in DDS is diffuse mesangial sclerosis (DMS). Case report: We report two cases of DDS with focal membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN). Both of our cases were males with ambiguous genitalia. They had a similar heterozygous germline mutation in exon 9 of WT1, c.1180C>T, p.R394W; a known mutation hotspot for DDS. Case 1 had nephropathy at the age of 4 years and Case 2 at 2.5 years with different rates of progression to end-stage renal failure. Conclusion: Our findings, in combination with other reports, illustrate the clinicopathological heterogeneity of DDS. There are no universal recommendations for optimal management of patients with DDS due to the inability to accurately predict affected individuals’ progress.

Background As mortality rates decline, life expectancy increases, and populations age, non-fatal outcomes of diseases and injuries are becoming a larger component of the global burden of disease. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2016 (GBD 2016) provides a comprehensive assessment of prevalence, incidence, and years lived with disability (YLDs) for 328 causes in 195 countries and territories from 1990 to 2016. Methods We estimated prevalence and incidence for 328 diseases and injuries and 2982 sequelae, their non-fatal consequences. We used DisMod-MR 2.1, a Bayesian meta-regression tool, as the main method of estimation, ensuring consistency between incidence, prevalence, remission, and cause of death rates for each condition. For some causes, we used alternative modelling strategies if incidence or prevalence needed to be derived from other data. YLDs were estimated as the product of prevalence and a disability weight for all mutually exclusive sequelae, corrected for comorbidity and aggregated to cause level. We updated the Socio-demographic Index (SDI), a summary indicator of income per capita, years of schooling, and total fertility rate. GBD 2016 complies with the Guidelines for Accurate and Transparent Health Estimates Reporting (GATHER). Findings Globally, low back pain, migraine, age-related and other hearing loss, iron-deficiency anaemia, and major depressive disorder were the five leading causes of YLDs in 2016, contributing 57·6 million (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 40·8-75·9 million [7·2%, 6·0-8·3]), 45·1 million (29·0-62·8 million [5·6%, 4·0-7·2]), 36·3 million (25·3-50·9 million [4·5%, 3·8-5·3]), 34·7 million (23·0-49·6 million [4·3%, 3·5-5·2]), and 34·1 million (23·5-46·0 million [4·2%, 3·2-5·3]) of total YLDs, respectively. - Abstract
Purpose: Focal-spot size partially defines spatial resolution of a computed tomography (CT) system. Many CT tubes have two focal-spot sizes, with the finer one allowing more detailed imagery at a cost in photon intensity and increased heat production. Improved x-ray technology and advancement of iterative reconstruction allow the use of fine focal spot technique in CT angiography. CT neck angiography (CTNA) has been commonly performed as part of stroke imaging or in trauma setting. This prospective study aimed to assess the efficacy of fine focal-spot scanning in vessel clarity improvement, vessel calcification and arterial pulsation artefact reduction on CTNA. Methods and materials: Consecutive adult patients of all age and gender who presented for CTNA were included. All CTNA were scanned with standard focal-spot size (SFSS) of 1x1 mm in first 4 months while the CTNA in the following 4 months with finer focal-spot size (FFSS) of 0.5x1mm. Vessel clarity, calcification and arterial pulsation artefacts of arch of aorta, brachiocephalic, subclavian, common carotid, carotid bifurcation, internal carotid, external carotid and vertebral arteries were assessed using 5-point scale by 2 blinded radiologists randomly. Results were compared. Result(s): There were 43 patients (mean age 60) with 97 calcified arterial segments in SFSS and 48 patients (mean age 62) with 113 calcified arterial segments in FFSS. 30% patients have >50% carotid artery stenosis. No occlusion or dissection was found in the remaining arteries, including the vertebrals. Interobserver agreement was excellent (kappa = .834). Mann-Whitney test showed FFSS performed significantly better for vessel clarity (U: 48238.50, p < .001,r: 0.556) and calcification artefact reduction (U: 2040.50, p < 0.001,r: 0.564). There was no significant reduction for arterial pulsation artefact. A search for a narrow Higgs boson resonance in the diphoton mass spectrum is presented based on data corresponding to 10fb -1 of integrated luminosity collected by the CDF experiment from proton-antiproton collisions at s=1.96TeV. To increase the sensitivity of the search, we employ a multivariate discriminant technique for the first time in this channel at CDF. No evidence of signal is observed, and upper limits are set on the cross section times branching ratio of the resonant state as a function of the Higgs boson mass. The limits are interpreted in the context of the standard model with an expected (observed) limit on the cross section times branching ratio of 9.9 (17.0) times the standard model prediction at the 95% credibility level for a Higgs boson mass of 125GeV/c 2. Moreover, a Higgs boson with suppressed couplings to fermions is excluded for masses below 114GeV/c 2 at the 95% credibility level. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

We report a measurement of the bottom-strange meson mixing phase βs using the time evolution of Bs0→J/ψ(→μ+μ-)ϕ(→K+K-) decays in which the quark-flavor content of the bottom-strange meson is identified at production. This measurement uses the full data set of proton-antiproton collisions at s=1.96 TeV collected by the Collider Detector experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron, corresponding to 9.6 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. We report confidence regions in the two-dimensional space of βs and the Bs0 decay-width difference ΔΓs and measure βs∈[-π/2,-1.51]∪[-0.06,0.30]∪[1.26,π/2] at the 68% confidence level, in agreement with the standard model expectation. Assuming the standard model value of βs, we also determine ΔΓs=0.068±0.026(stat)±0.009(syst) ps-1 and the mean Bs0 lifetime τs=1.528±0.019(stat)±0.009(syst) ps, which are consistent and competitive with determinations by other experiments., This work was supported by the U.S. Department of Energy and National Science Foundation; the Italian Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare; the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan; the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada; the National Science Council of the Republic of China; the Swiss National Science Foundation; the A. OBJECTIVE:: This study examined household food insecurity of urban low-income families in Korea and the associations of the food insecurity with children's dietary intake and body size. DESIGN:: Cross-sectional study. SETTING:: Low-income neighborhoods in large cities. SUBJECTS:: Included 370 children aged 4-12?y, who had all records on dietary intake and anthropometry as well as household food insecurity measures. RESULTS:: Using the 10-item Radimer/Cornell Scale, 62.7% of the households showed some degree of food insecurity (8.6% for food insecure for family, 28.4% for food insecure for adults and 25.7% for child hunger households). Food insecurity was linearly and negatively associated with household economic conditions as well as the caretaker's use of nutrition knowledge. There were also significant associations of food insecurity with the children's dietary intakes, indicating the largest amount of nutrients for the children from the household food insecure, followed by those from the food secure, adult food insecure and child hunger groups. The household food insecure children were fatter than the food secure children. The fatter condition of the former children appeared to be related to more frequent intakes of low-quality foods. CONCLUSION:: This study reports curvilinear associations between the status of household food insecurity and children's food intakes and fatness.
