Search

We report the discovery of a new exoplanet candidate orbiting the star GJ 3470. A total of three transits were detected by OKSky Observatory: the first one on December 23, 2019, the second one on February 27, 2020, and the third one on May 3, 2020. We estimate an average transit depth of 0.84 percent and duration of 1 hour and 2 minutes. Based on this parameter, we calculate a radius of 9.2 Earth radii, which would correspond to the size of a Saturn-like exoplanet. We also estimate an orbital period of 66 days that places the exoplanet inside the habitable zone, near the orbital distance at Earths equivalent radiation. Another twelve potential transits that do not belong to GJ 3470 b are also reported. Despite our candidate for GJ 3470 c still has to be confirmed by the scientific community, the discovery represents a turning point in exoplanet research for being the first candidate discovered through an international project managed by amateur astronomers.

Continuing the project described by Kato et al. (2009, PASJ, 61, S395, arXiv/0905.1757), we collected times of superhump maxima for 102 SU UMa-type dwarf novae observed mainly during the 2017 season and characterized these objects. WZ Sge-type stars identified in this study are PT And, ASASSN-17ei, ASASSN-17el, ASASSN-17es, ASASSN-17fn, ASASSN-17fz, ASASSN-17hw, ASASSN-17kd, ASASSN-17la, PNV J20205397+2508145 and TCP J00332502-3518565. We obtained new mass ratios for 7 objects using growing superhumps (stage A). ASASSN-17gf is an EI Psc-type object below the period minimum. CRTS J080941.3+171528 and DDE 51 are objects in the period gap and both showed long-lasting phase of stage A superhumps. In this work, we present transit timing variations detected for the exoplanet TrES-5b. To obtain the necessary amount of photometric data for this exoplanet, we have organized an international campaign to search for exoplanets based on the Transit Timing Variation method (TTV) and as a result of this we collected 30 new light curves, 15 light curves from the Exoplanet Transit Database (ETD) and 8 light curves from the literature for the timing analysis of the exoplanet TrES-5b. We have detected timing variations with a semi-amplitude of A ~ 0.0016 days and a period of P ~ 99 days. We carried out the N-body modeling based on the three-body problem. The detected perturbation of TrES-5b may be caused by a second exoplanet in the TrES-5 system. We report a long-term (1961-2017) study of the eclipse times in the dwarf nova WZ Sagittae, in an effort to learn its rate of orbital-period change. Some wiggles with a time scale of 20-50 years are apparent, and a connection with the 23-year interval between dwarf-nova eruptions is possible. These back-and-forth wiggles dominate the O-C diagram, and prevent a secure measurement of the steady rate of orbital-period change. The line, it is drawn, the curse, it is cast. The physical characterization of potentially hazardous asteroids (PHAs) is important for impact hazard assessment and evaluating mitigation options. Close flybys of PHAs provide an opportunity to study their surface photometric and spectral properties that enable identification of their source regions in the main asteroid belt. We observed PHA (357439) 2004 BL86 during a close flyby of the Earth at a distance of 1.2 million km (0.0080 AU) on January 26, 2015, with an array of ground-based telescopes to constrain its photometric and spectral properties. Lightcurve observations showed that the asteroid was a binary and subsequent radar observations confirmed the binary nature and gave a primary diameter of 300 meters and a secondary diameter of 50-100 meters. Our photometric observations were used to derive the phase curve of 2004 BL86 in the V-band. Two different photometric functions were fitted to this phase curve, the IAU H-G model (Bowell et al. 1989) and the Shevchenko model (Shevchenko 1996). From the fit of the H-G function we obtained an absolute magnitude H=19.51+/-0.02 and a slope parameter G=0.34+/-0.02. The Shevchenko function yielded an absolute magnitude of H=19.03+/-0.07 and a phase coefficient b=0.0225+/-0.0006. The phase coefficient was used to calculate the geometric albedo (Ag) using the relationship found by Belskaya and Schevchenko (2000), obtaining a value of Ag=40+/-8% in the V-band. With the geometric albedo and the absolute magnitudes derived from the H-G and the Shevchenko functions we calculated the diameter (D) of 2004 BL86, obtaining D=263+/-26, and D=328+/-35 meters, respectively. 2004 BL86 spectral band parameters and pyroxene chemistry are consistent with non-cumulate eucrite meteorites., Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables. V1432 Aquilae is the only known eclipsing asynchronous polar. In this respect it is unique and therefore merits our attention. We report the results of a 15-year campaign by the globally distributed Center for Backyard Astrophysics to observe V1432 Aql and investigate its return to synchronism. Originally knocked out of synchrony by a nova explosion before observing records began, the magnetic white dwarf in V1432 Aql is currently rotating slower than the orbital period but is gradually catching up. The fortuitously high inclination of the binary orbit affords us the bonus of eclipses providing a regular clock against which these temporal changes can be assessed. At the present rate, synchronism should be achieved around 2100. The continually changing trajectory of the accretion stream as it follows the magnetic field lines of the rotating white dwarf produces a complex pattern of light emission which we have measured and documented, providing comprehensive observational evidence against which physical models of the system can be tested., Comment: 14 pages, 16 figures, presented at the Society for Astronomical Sciences 33rd Annual Symposium on Telescope Science, June 2014, acknowledgements added

Continuing the project described by Kato et al. (2009, PASJ 61, S395, arXiv:0905.1757), we collected times of superhump maxima for 51 SU UMa-type dwarf novae mainly observed during the 2010-2011 season. Although most of the new data for systems with short superhump periods basically confirmed the findings by Kato et al. (2009) and Kato et al. (2010, PASJ 62, 1525, arXiv:1009.5444), the long-period system GX Cas showed an exceptionally large positive period derivative. An analysis of public Kepler data of V344 Lyr and V1504 Cyg yielded less striking stage transitions. In V344 Lyr, there was prominent secondary component growing during the late stage of superoutbursts, and the component persisted at least for two more cycles of successive normal outbursts. We also investigated the superoutbursts of two conspicuous eclipsing objects: HT Cas and the WZ Sge-type object SDSS J080434.20+510349.2. Strong beat phenomena were detected in both objects, and late-stage superhumps in the latter object had an almost constant luminosity during the repeated rebrightenings. The WZ Sge-type object SDSS J133941.11+484727.5 showed a phase reversal around the rapid fading from the superoutburst. The object showed a prominent beat phenomenon even after the end of the superoutburst. A pilot study of superhump amplitudes indicated that the amplitudes of superhumps are strongly correlated with orbital periods, and the dependence on the inclination is weak in systems with inclinations smaller than 80 deg., Comment: 87 pages, 92 figures, Accepted for publication in PASJ, correction in the author list and text

SDSS J162718.39+120435.0 was suspected of being a dwarf nova from spectroscopic observations made available by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Photometry conducted during the 2008 outburst, the first ever outburst of this object detected and followed up in real time, shows that the outburst reached magnitude 14.6 at maximum, had an amplitude of 4.6 magnitudes and lasted for at least 18 days. Common superhumps were detected with an amplitude of up to 0.4 magnitudes, confirming it to be a member of the SU UMa family. Initially the superhump period, Psh, was 0.10993(7) days (2.638 hours), but it subsequently reduced to Psh = 0.10890(9) days (2.614 hours) later in the outburst. The period change corresponds to the end of the plateau period of the outburst. The orbital period, Porb, was estimated from the two Psh values as between 0.1026 d and 0.1016 d, which places SDSS1627 near the centre of the period gap in the orbital period distribution of cataclysmic variables., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures.
