1. Pulling back the curtain on shocks and star-formation in NGC 1266 with Gemini-NIFS

Abstract: We present Gemini near-infrared integral field spectrograph (NIFS) K-band observations of the central 400 pc of NGC 1266, a nearby (D$\approx$30 Mpc) post-starburst galaxy with a powerful multi-phase outflow and a shocked ISM. We detect 7 H$_2$ ro-vibrational emission lines excited thermally to $T$$\sim$2000 K, and weak Br$\gamma$ emission, consistent with a fast C-shock. With these bright H$_2$ lines, we observe the spatial structure of the shock with an unambiguous tracer for the first time. The Br$\gamma$ emission is concentrated in the central $\lesssim$100 pc, indicating that any remaining star-formation in NGC 1266 is in the nucleus while the surrounding cold molecular gas has little on-going star-formation. Though it is unclear what fraction of this Br$\gamma$ emission is from star-formation or the AGN, assuming it is entirely due to star-formation we measure an instantaneous star-formation rate of 0.7 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, though the star-formation rate may be significantly higher in the presence of additional extinction. NGC 1266 provides a unique laboratory to study the complex interactions between AGN, outflows, shocks, and star-formation, all of which are necessary to unravel the evolution of the post-starburst phase., Comment: ApJ accepted

2. On the Impact of High-Order Harmonic Generation in Electrical Distribution Systems

Abstract: The modern power grid has seen a rise in the integration of non-linear loads, presenting a significant concern for operators. These loads introduce unwanted harmonics, leading to potential issues such as overheating and improper functioning of circuit breakers. In pursuing a more sustainable grid, the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and photovoltaic (PV) systems in residential networks has increased. Understanding and examining the effects of high-order harmonic frequencies beyond $1.5$ kHz is crucial to understanding their impact on the operation and planning of electrical distribution systems under varying nonlinear loading conditions. This study investigates a diverse set of critical power electronic loads within a household modeled using PSCAD/EMTdc, analyzing their unique harmonic spectra. This information is utilized to run the time-series harmonic analysis program in OpenDSS on a modified IEEE 34 bus test system model. Abstract: We present new JWST/NIRSpec IFU observations of the J1000+0234 system at $z=4.54$, the dense core of a galaxy protocluster hosting a massive, dusty star forming galaxy (DSFG) with a low luminosity radio counterpart. The new data reveals two extended, high equivalent width (EW$_0 > 1000$ {\AA}) nebulae at each side of the DSFG disk along its minor axis (namely O3-N and O3-S). On one hand, O3-N's spectrum shows a prominent FWHM $\sim1300$ km s$^{-1}$ broad and blueshifted component, suggesting an outflow origin. On the other hand, O3-S stretches over parsec and has a velocity gradient that spans $800$ km s$^{-1}$ but no evidence of a broad component. Both sources, however, seem to be powered at least partially by an active galactic nucleus (AGN), so we classify them as extended emission-line regions (EELRs). The strongest evidence comes from the detection of the high-ionization [Ne V] $\lambda3427$ line toward O3-N, which paired with the non-detection of hard X-rays implies an obscuring column density above the Compton-thick regime. In O3-S, the [Ne V] line is not detected, but we measure a He II well above the expectation for star formation. We interpret this as O3-S being externally irradiated by the AGN, akin to the famous Hanny's Voorwerp object in the local Universe. In addition, more classical line ratio diagnostics (e.g. [O III]/H$\beta$ vs [N II]/H$\alpha$) put the DSFG itself in the AGN region of the diagrams, and hence the most probable host of the AGN. 4. Autism Spectrum Disorder and Parental Depression

Abstract: Studies exploring associations between children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and depression in parents are limited. This study compares healthcare utilization, depression treatment costs, and risk factors, in parents of children with and without ASD. Using a matched case-control, individuals aged 27 to 64 with continuous enrollment from 2017-2019 and a child diagnosed with ASD were selected from nationally representative administrative claims data. Individuals were randomly matched 1:3 to a non-ASD group based on the child's age, gender, and family characteristics. Statistical models were used to evaluate the association between ASD in children, depression in their respective parents, and resulting healthcare utilization and costs incurred by parents. The study consisted of 23,316 families, out of which 5,779 had children with ASD, and 17,337 had children without ASD. Having a child with ASD was a predictor of depression in parents (OR 1.91, 95% CI 1.73-2.10). Mothers of children with ASD had a higher risk of having depression (OR 4.0, 95% CI 2.62-6.12). Parents having multiple ASD children were also at higher risk of depression (OR 1.6, 95% CI 1.18-2.13). The sex and age of the child were not associated with parental depression. While family-level income and education attainment were not associated, urbanicity (rural) had an association with depression. Parents with ASD children are at a higher risk of depression. Findings suggest that parents of children with ASD may benefit from depression screening at the onset of ASD diagnosis in their children.

5. 3C 273 Host Galaxy with Hubble Space Telescope Coronagraphy

Abstract: The close-in regions of bright quasars' host galaxies have been difficult to image due to the overwhelming light from the quasars. With coronagraphic observations in visible light using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on the Hubble Space Telescope, we removed 3C 273 quasar light using color-matching reference stars. The observations revealed the host galaxy from 60" to 0.2" with nearly full angular coverage. Isophote modeling revealed a new core jet, a core blob, and multiple smaller-scale blobs within 2.5". The blobs could potentially be satellite galaxies or infalling materials towards the central quasar. Using archival STIS data, we constrained the apparent motion of its large scale jets over a 22 yr timeline. By resolving the 3C 273 host galaxy with STIS, our study validates the coronagraph usage on extragalactic sources in obtaining new insights into the central ~kpc regions of quasar hosts., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables, A&A Letters accepted

8. How Do Pedestrians' Perception Change toward Autonomous Vehicles during Unmarked Midblock Multilane Crossings: Role of AV Operation and Signal Indication

Abstract: One of the primary impediments hindering the widespread acceptance of autonomous vehicles (AVs) among pedestrians is their limited comprehension of AVs. This study employs virtual reality (VR) to provide pedestrians with an immersive environment for engaging with and comprehending AVs during unmarked midblock multilane crossings. Diverse AV driving behaviors were modeled to exhibit negotiation behavior with a yellow signal indication or non-yielding behavior with a blue signal indication. This paper aims to investigate the impact of various factors, such as AV behavior and signaling, pedestrian past behavior, etc., on pedestrians' perception change of AVs. Before and after the VR experiment, participants completed surveys assessing their perception of AVs, focusing on two main aspects: "Attitude" and "System Effectiveness." The Wilcoxon signed-rank test results demonstrated that both pedestrians' overall attitude score toward AVs and trust in the effectiveness of AV systems significantly increased following the VR experiment. Notably, individuals who exhibited a greater trust in the yellow signals were more inclined to display a higher attitude score toward AVs and to augment their trust in the effectiveness of AV systems. This indicates that the design of the yellow signal instills pedestrians with greater confidence in their interactions with AVs. Further, pedestrians who exhibit more aggressive crossing behavior are less likely to change their perception towards AVs as compared to those pedestrians with more positive crossing behaviors. It is concluded that integrating this paper's devised AV behavior and signaling within an immersive VR setting facilitated pedestrian engagement with AVs, thereby changing their perception of AVs.

9. Radio Jet Feedback on the Inner Disk of Virgo Spiral Galaxy Messier 58

Abstract: Spitzer spectral maps reveal a disk of highly luminous, warm (>150 K) H2 in the center of the massive spiral galaxy Messier 58, which hosts a radio-loud AGN. The inner 2.6 kpc of the galaxy appears to be overrun by shocks from the radio jet cocoon. Gemini NIRI imaging of the H2 1-0 S(1) emission line, ALMA CO 2-1, and HST multiband imagery indicate that much of the molecular gas is shocked in-situ, corresponding to lanes of dusty molecular gas that spiral towards the galaxy nucleus. The CO 2-1 and ionized gas kinematics are highly disturbed, with velocity dispersion up to 300 km/s. Dissipation of the associated kinetic energy and turbulence, likely injected into the ISM by radio-jet driven outflows, may power the observed molecular and ionized gas emission from the inner disk. The PAH fraction and composition in the inner disk appear to be normal, in spite of the jet and AGN activity. The PAH ratios are consistent with excitation by the interstellar radiation field from old stars in the bulge, with no contribution from star formation. The phenomenon of jet-shocked H2 may substantially reduce star formation and help to regulate the stellar mass of the inner disk and supermassive black hole in this otherwise normal spiral galaxy. 11. Cygnus A Obscuring Torus: Ionized, Atomic or Molecular?

Abstract: The prototypical powerful FR \Romannum{2} radio galaxy Cygnus A fits extremely well into the quasar/radio galaxy unified model: high polarization with an angle almost perpendicular to the radio jet and polarized flux showing broad permitted lines. It has been claimed that ionized gas in the torus reveals a very clear torus shape via Bremmstrahlung emission. We rule out the later with an energetic argument, and we constrain the molecular and atomic gas properties with existing observations. The atomic absorption against the core has been shown to match the X-ray column only if the spin temperature is an implausible $T_{\rm s} = 1\times 10^6$ K. This points to a molecular medium for the X-ray column $\log(N_{\rm H} ~[\rm{cm^{-2}}]) \sim 23.5$. Yet not low-J CO absorption is detected to sensitive limits. The non-detection is surprising given that this powerful radio galaxy hosts a luminous, dust-obscured active nucleus and copious warm molecular hydrogen. These conditions suggest a detectable level of emission. Furthermore, the torus X-ray column density suggests detectable absorption. We explore various possibilities to explain the lack of a signature from warm CO (200-250K). Specifically, that the radiative excitation by the radio core renders low-J CO absorption below current sensitivities, and that high-J levels are well populated and conducive to producing absorption. We test this hypothesis using archival \textit{Hershel}/SPIRE FTS observations of Cygnus A of high-J CO lines ($14 \geq J \geq 4$ transitions). Still high-J CO lines are not detected. We suggest that ALMA observations near its high frequency limit can be critical to obtain the signature of molecular line of the torus of Cygnus A.

12. Halfway to the peak: Spatially resolved star formation and kinematics in a z=0.54 dusty galaxy with JWST/MIRI

Abstract: We present JWST/MIRI/MRS observations of an infrared luminous disk galaxy, FLS1, at z=0.54. With a lookback time of 5 Gyr, FLS1 is chronologically at the midpoint between the peak epoch of star formation and the present day. The MRS data provide maps of the atomic fine structure lines [Ar II]6.99 micron, [Ar III]8.99 micron, [Ne II]12.81 micron, and [Ne III]15.55 micron, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) features at 3.3 micron, 6.2 micron, and 11.3 micron, and the warm molecular gas indicators H2S(5) and H2S(3); all these emission features are spatially resolved. We find that the PAH emission is more extended along the Northern side of the galaxy when compared to the well-studied star-formation tracer [Ne II]. The H2 rotational lines, which are shock indicators, are strongest and most extended on the Southern side of the galaxy. [Ar II] is the second brightest fine structure line detected in FLS1 and we show that it is a useful kinematic probe which can be detected with JWST out to z=3. Velocity maps of [Ar II] show a rotating disk with signs of turbulence. Our results provide an example of how spatially resolved mid-infrared spectroscopy can allow us to better understand the star formation and ISM conditions in a galaxy halfway back to the peak epoch of galaxy evolution., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

Abstract: Over the past two decades Biomedical Engineering has emerged as a major discipline that bridges societal needs of human health care with the development of novel technologies. Every medical institution is now equipped at varying degrees of sophistication with the ability to monitor human health in both non-invasive and invasive modes. The multiple scales at which human physiology can be interrogated provide a profound perspective on health and disease. We are at the nexus of creating avatars (herein defined as an extension of digital twins) of human patho/physiology to serve as paradigms for interrogation and potential intervention. Motivated by the emergence of these new capabilities, the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, the Departments of Biomedical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University and Bioengineering at University of California at San Diego sponsored an interdisciplinary workshop to define the grand challenges that face biomedical engineering and the mechanisms to address these challenges. The Workshop identified five grand challenges with cross-cutting themes and provided a roadmap for new technologies, identified new training needs, and defined the types of interdisciplinary teams needed for addressing these challenges. The themes presented in this paper include: 1) accumedicine through creation of avatars of cells, tissues, organs and whole human; 2) development of smart and responsive devices for human function augmentation; 3) exocortical technologies to understand brain function and treat neuropathologies; 4) the development of approaches to harness the human immune system for health and wellness; and 5) new strategies to engineer genomes and cells.

14. Type and Dosage of Performance Feedback Following COMPASS Consultation on Teacher and Student Outcomes

Abstract: Little is known about differences in dosage or feedback that make teacher coaching effective in relation to teacher and student outcomes. This study builds upon previous research on the Collaborative Model for Promoting Competence and Success (COMPASS) to understand the impact of different types (face-to-face coaching vs. emailed feedback) and dosages (one vs. two or four) of performance feedback compared to receiving no feedback following an initial consultation during which intervention plans were developed. Findings suggest that teacher adherence and student goal-attainment outcomes depend on dosage, not type of coaching. Specifically, having two or four opportunities for performance feedback was significantly better than having none or only one opportunity. Ratings of teacher adherence and student goal attainment delivered via emailed feedback or face-to-face coaching were similar, which may have important implications for cost and efficiency. While preliminary, the results are promising and warrant further research. Implications are also discussed.

15. Intervention Plan Quality Matters: Using COMPASS to Collaboratively Develop Student-Centered, Evidence-Based Intervention Plans Using an EBPP Approach

Abstract: The quality of interventions for children with autism has improved thanks in part to the widespread dissemination of evidence-based practices (EBPs); however, teachers still report challenges developing focused interventions targeting the core challenges of students with autism. Tested in three randomized trials, COMPASS is a consultation-based implementation strategy that prioritizes shared decision-making in the development of goals and intervention plans using an evidence-based practice in psychology approach. To successfully train COMPASS consultants, a 16-item Intervention Plan Quality Scale (IPQS) was developed and tested with a set of nine school-based COMPASS-trained consultants who provided a total of 28 consultations. Results revealed that the IPQS had acceptable reliability and concurrent validity and was successful in helping consultant trainees develop high-quality plans over four feedback sessions. Overall, the IPQS was helpful for fidelity monitoring and appears to partially mediate child goal attainment outcomes through teacher adherence implementing the intervention plans.

16. The Discovery and Description of the Influence of Mentorship in Higher Education

Abstract: The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to describe the attributes of mentorship that are beneficial from a student's perspective and how those attributes may influence the student's ability to achieve degree completion. The Pathways to Mentoring Influence model guided the study and aided in the development of the research questions: How do mentored college graduates describe the mentoring relationship and its influence on their ability to achieve degree completion? How do mentored college graduates describe the trust and empathy expressed that allowed the relationship to develop and their influence on their ability to achieve degree completion? How do mentored college graduates describe mentorship influences on their social-emotional, cognitive, and identity development and their influence on their ability to achieve degree completion? How do mentored college graduates describe mentorship influences on their personal development leading to character, social, and academic competence and their influence on their ability to achieve degree completion? Data was collected via interviews with 11 participants and two, three participant, focus groups. To qualify to participate in the study, participants needed to be college graduates who were mentored in the United States. Eight themes were identified to describe the attributes of mentorship that are beneficial from a student's perspective and how those attributes may influence the student's ability to achieve degree completion. These findings include the characteristics seen as valuable by the protege, support from the mentor, a sense of security felt through mentorship, actions that led to the development of trust, the development of the protege, ability to view obstacles as opportunities, growth in self-efficacy, and practical areas of growth as a result of mentorship. Abstract: Quasar-driven galactic outflows are a major driver of the evolution of massive galaxies. We report observations of a powerful galactic-scale outflow in a $z=3$ extremely red, intrinsically luminous ($L_{\rm bol}\simeq 5\times 10^{47}$erg s$^{-1}$) quasar SDSSJ1652+1728 with the Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) on board JWST. We analyze the kinematics of rest-frame optical emission lines and identify the quasar-driven outflow extending out to $\sim 10$ kpc from the quasar with a velocity offset of ($v_{r}=\pm 500$ km s$^{-1}$) and high velocity dispersion (FWHM$=700-2400$ km s$^{-1}$). Due to JWST's unprecedented surface brightness sensitivity in the near-infrared -- we unambiguously show that the powerful high velocity outflow in an extremely red quasar (ERQ) encompasses a large swath of the host galaxy's interstellar medium (ISM). Using the kinematics and dynamics of optical emission lines, we estimate the mass outflow rate -- in the warm ionized phase alone -- to be at least $2300\pm1400$ $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. We measure a momentum flux ratio between the outflow and the quasar accretion disk of $\sim$1 on kpc scale, indicating that the outflow was likely driven in a relatively high ($>10^{23}$cm$^{-2}$) column density environment through radiation pressure on dust grains. We find a coupling efficiency between the bolometric luminosity of the quasar and the outflow of 0.1$\%$, matching the theoretical prediction of the minimum coupling efficiency necessary for negative quasar feedback. The outflow has sufficient energetics to drive the observed turbulence seen in shocked regions of the quasar host galaxy, likely directly responsible for prolonging the time it takes for gas to cool efficiently., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, 1 table, submitted for publication in ApJ

Abstract: The [OIII] 5007 A emission line is the most common tracer of warm, ionized outflows in active galactic nuclei across cosmic time. JWST newly allows us to use mid-infrared spectral features at both high spatial and spectral resolution to probe these same winds. Here we present a comparison of ground-based, seeing-limited [OIII] and space-based, diffraction-limited [SIV] 10.51 micron maps of the powerful, kiloparsec-scale outflow in the Type 1 red quasar SDSS J110648.32+480712.3. The JWST data are from the Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI). There is a close match in resolution between the datasets (0."6), in ionization potential of the O$^{+2}$ and S$^{+3}$ ions (35 eV), and in line sensitivity (1e-17 to 2e-17 erg/s/cm$^2$/arcsec$^2$). The [OIII] and [SIV] line shapes match in velocity and linewidth over much of the 20 kpc outflowing nebula, and [SIV] is the brightest line in the rest-frame 3.5-19.5 micron range, demonstrating its usefulness as a mid-IR probe of quasar outflows. [OIII] is nevertheless intriniscally brighter and provides better contrast with the point-source continuum, which is strong in the mid-IR. There is a strong anticorrelation of [OIII]/[SIV] with average velocity, which is consistent with a scenario of differential obscuration between the approaching (blueshifted) and receding (redshifted) sides of the flow. 19. Completeness of the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED) -- Local Volume Sample

Abstract: We introduce the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED) Local Volume Sample (NED-LVS), a subset of $\sim$1.9 million objects with distances out to 1000~Mpc. We use UV and IR fluxes available in NED from all-sky surveys to derive physical properties, and estimate the completeness relative to the expected local luminosity density. The completeness relative to NIR luminosities (which traces a galaxy's stellar mass) is roughly 100% at $D<$30~Mpc and remains moderate (70%) out to 300~Mpc. For brighter galaxies ($\gtrsim L^{*}$), NED-LVS is $\sim$100% complete out to $\sim$400~Mpc. When compared to other local Universe samples (GLADE and HECATE), all three are $\sim$100% complete below 30~Mpc. At distances beyond $\sim$80~Mpc, NED-LVS is more complete than both GLADE and HECATE by $\sim$10-20%. NED-LVS is the underlying sample for the NED gravitational wave follow-up (NED-GWF) service, which provides prioritized lists of host candidates for GW events within minutes of alerts issued by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA collaboration. We test the prioritization of galaxies in the volume of GW170817 by 3 physical properties, where we find that both stellar mass and inverse specific star formation rate place the correct host galaxy in the top ten. In addition, NED-LVS can be used for a wide variety of other astrophysical studies: galaxy evolution, star formation, large-scale structure, galaxy environments, and more. The data in NED are updated regularly, and NED-LVS will be updated concurrently. Abstract: Flare frequency distributions represent a key approach to addressing one of the largest problems in solar and stellar physics: determining the mechanism that counter-intuitively heats coronae to temperatures that are orders of magnitude hotter than the corresponding photospheres. It is widely accepted that the magnetic field is responsible for the heating, but there are two competing mechanisms that could explain it: nanoflares or Alfv\'en waves. To date, neither can be directly observed. Nanoflares are, by definition, extremely small, but their aggregate energy release could represent a substantial heating mechanism, presuming they are sufficiently abundant. One way to test this presumption is via the flare frequency distribution, which describes how often flares of various energies occur. If the slope of the power law fitting the flare frequency distribution is above a critical threshold, $\alpha=2$ as established in prior literature, then there should be a sufficient abundance of nanoflares to explain coronal heating. We performed $>$600 case studies of solar flares, made possible by an unprecedented number of data analysts via three semesters of an undergraduate physics laboratory course. This allowed us to include two crucial, but nontrivial, analysis methods: pre-flare baseline subtraction and computation of the flare energy, which requires determining flare start and stop times. We aggregated the results of these analyses into a statistical study to determine that $\alpha = 1.63 \pm 0.03$. Abstract: Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. 23. Can AI Chatbots Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) and Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) Structural Exams?

Abstract: The engineering community has recently witnessed the emergence of chatbot technology with the release of OpenAI ChatGPT-4 and Google Bard. While these chatbots have been reported to perform well and even pass various standardized tests, including medical and law exams, this forum paper explores whether these chatbots can also pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) and Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exams. A diverse range of civil and environmental engineering questions and scenarios are used to evaluate the chatbots' performance, as commonly present in the FE and PE exams. The chatbots' responses were analyzed based on their relevance, accuracy, and clarity and then compared against the recommendations of the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). Our report shows that ChatGPT-4 and Bard, respectively scored 70.9% and 39.2% in the FE exam and 46.2% and 41% in the PE exam. It is evident that the current version of ChatGPT-4 could potentially pass the FE exam. While future editions are much more likely to pass both exams, this study also highlights the potential of using chatbots as teaching assistants and guiding engineers.

24. Pedestrian Behavior Interacting with Autonomous Vehicles during Unmarked Midblock Multilane Crossings: Role of Infrastructure Design, AV Operations and Signaling

Abstract: One of the main challenges autonomous vehicles (AVs) will face is interacting with pedestrians, especially at unmarked midblock locations where the right-of-way is unspecified. This study investigates pedestrian crossing behavior given different roadway centerline features (i.e., undivided, two-way left-turn lane (TWLTL), and median) and various AV operational schemes portrayed to pedestrians through on-vehicle signals (i.e., no signal, yellow negotiating indication, and yellow/blue negotiating/no-yield indications). This study employs virtual reality to simulate an urban unmarked midblock environment where pedestrians interact with AVs. Results demonstrate that both roadway centerline design features and AV operations and signaling significantly impact pedestrian unmarked midblock crossing behavior, including the waiting time at the curb, waiting time in the middle of the road, and the total crossing time. But only the roadway centerline features significantly impact the walking time. Participants in the undivided scene spent a longer time waiting at the curb and walking on the road than in the median and TWLTL scenes, but they spent a shorter time waiting in the middle. Compared to the AV without a signal, the design of yellow signal significantly reduced pedestrian waiting time at the curb and in the middle. But yellow/blue significantly increased the pedestrian waiting time. Interaction effects between roadway centerline design features and AV operations and signaling are significant only for waiting time in the middle. For middle waiting time, yellow/blue signals had the most impact on the median road type and the least on the undivided road. Demographics, past behaviors, and walking exposure are also explored. Older individuals tend to wait longer, and pedestrian past crossing behaviors and past walking exposures do not significantly impact pedestrian walking behavior.

This study evaluates how AV operations /associated signaling and roadway infrastructure affect pedestrian behavior in virtual reality. AVs were designed with different operations and signal indications, including negotiating with no signal, negotiating with a yellow signal, and yellow/blue negotiating/no-yield indications. Results show that AV signal significantly impacts pedestrians' accepted gap, walking time, and waiting time. Pedestrians chose the largest open gap between cars with AV showing no signal, and had the slowest crossing speed with AV showing a yellow signal indication. Roadway infrastructure affects pedestrian walking time and waiting time.

Abstract: Pedestrian occlusion is challenging for autonomous vehicles (AVs) at midblock locations on multilane roadways because an AV cannot detect crossing pedestrians that are fully occluded by downstream vehicles in adjacent lanes. This paper tests the capability of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication between an AV and its downstream vehicles to share midblock pedestrian crossings information. The researchers developed a V2V-based collision-avoidance decision strategy and compared it to a base scenario (i.e., decision strategy without the utilization of V2V). Simulation results showed that for the base scenario, the near-zero time-to-collision (TTC) indicated no time for the AV to take appropriate action and resulted in dramatic braking followed by collisions. But the V2V-based collision-avoidance decision strategy allowed for a proportional braking approach to increase the TTC allowing the pedestrian to cross safely. To conclude, the V2V-based collision-avoidance decision strategy has higher safety benefits for an AV interacting with fully occluded pedestrians at midblock locations on multilane roadways.

27. Molecular gas in super spiral galaxies

Abstract: At the highest stellar masses (log(\mstar) $\gtrsim$ 11.5 \msun), only a small fraction of galaxies are disk-like and actively star-forming objects. These so-called `super spirals' are ideal objects to better understand how galaxy evolution proceeds and to extend our knowledge about the relation between stars and gas to a higher stellar mass regime. We present new CO(1-0) data for a sample of 46 super spirals and for 18 slightly lower-mass (log(\mstar) $>$ 11.0 \msun ) galaxies with broad HI lines -- HI fast-rotators (HI-FRs). We analyze their molecular gas mass, derived from CO, in relation to their star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass, and compare the results to values and scaling relations derived from lower-mass galaxies. We confirm that super spirals follow the same star-forming main sequence (SFMS) as lower-mass galaxies. We find that they possess abundant molecular gas, which lies above the extrapolation of the scaling relation with stellar mass derived from lower-mass galaxies, but within the relation between \mmol/\mstar and the distance to the SFMS. The molecular gas depletion time, \taudep = \mmol/SFR, is higher than for lower-mass galaxies on the SFMS (\taudep = 9.30 $\pm$ 0.03, compared to \taudep = 9.00 $\pm$ 0.02 for the comparison sample) and seems to continue an increasing trend with stellar mass. HI-FR galaxies have an atomic-to-molecular gas mass ratio that is in agreement with that of lower-mass galaxies, indicating that the conversion from the atomic to molecular gas proceeds in a similar way. We conclude that the availability of molecular gas is a crucial factor to enable star formation to continue and that, if gas is present, quenching is not a necessary destiny for high-mass galaxies. Abstract: Quasar feedback may regulate the growth of supermassive black holes, quench coeval star formation, and impact galaxy morphology and the circumgalactic medium. However, direct evidence for quasar feedback in action at the epoch of peak black hole accretion at z ~ 2 remains elusive. A good case in point is the z = 1.6 quasar WISEA J100211.29+013706.7 (XID 2028) where past analyses of the same ground-based data have come to different conclusions. Here we revisit this object with the integral field unit of the Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) on board the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) as part of Early Release Science program Q3D. The excellent angular resolution and sensitivity of the JWST data reveal new morphological and kinematic sub-structures in the outflowing gas plume. An analysis of the emission line ratios indicates that photoionization by the central quasar dominates the ionization state of the gas with no obvious sign for a major contribution from hot young stars anywhere in the host galaxy. Rest-frame near-ultraviolet emission aligned along the wide-angle cone of outflowing gas is interpreted as a scattering cone. The outflow has cleared a channel in the dusty host galaxy through which some of the quasar ionizing radiation is able to escape and heat the surrounding interstellar and circumgalactic media. The warm ionized outflow is not powerful enough to impact the host galaxy via mechanical feedback, but radiative feedback by the AGN, aided by the outflow, may help explain the unusually small molecular gas mass fraction in the galaxy host., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Abstract: Massive galaxies formed most actively at redshifts $z=1-3$ during the period known as `cosmic noon.' Here we present an emission-line study of an extremely red quasar SDSSJ165202.64+172852.3 host galaxy at $z=2.94$, based on observations with the Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) integral field unit (IFU) on board JWST. We use standard emission-line diagnostic ratios to map the sources of gas ionization across the host and a swarm of companion galaxies. The quasar dominates the photoionization, but we also discover shock-excited regions orthogonal to the ionization cone and the quasar-driven outflow. These shocks could be merger-induced or -- more likely, given the presence of a powerful galactic-scale quasar outflow -- these are signatures of wide-angle outflows that can reach parts of the galaxy that are not directly illuminated by the quasar. Finally, the kinematically narrow emission associated with the host galaxy presents as a collection of 1 kpc-scale clumps forming stars at a rate of at least 200 $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. The ISM within these clumps shows high electron densities, reaching up to 3,000 cm$^{-3}$ with metallicities ranging from half to a third solar with a positive metallicity gradient and V band extinctions up to 3 magnitudes. The star formation conditions are far more extreme in these regions than in local star-forming galaxies but consistent with that of massive galaxies at cosmic noon. Abstract: We report the analysis of microlensing event OGLE-2017-BLG-1038, observed by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment, Korean Microlensing Telescope Network, and Spitzer telescopes. The event is caused by a giant source star in the Galactic Bulge passing over a large resonant binary lens caustic. The availability of space-based data allows the full set of physical parameters to be calculated. However, there exists an eightfold degeneracy in the parallax measurement. The four best solutions correspond to very-low-mass binaries near ($M_1 = 170^{+40}_{-50} M_J$ and $M_2 = 110^{+20}_{-30} M_J$), or well below ($M_1 = 22.5^{+0.7}_{-0.4} M_J$ and $M_2 = 13.3^{+0.4}_{-0.3} M_J$) the boundary between stars and brown dwarfs. A conventional analysis, with scaled uncertainties for Spitzer data, implies a very-low-mass brown dwarf binary lens at a distance of 2 kpc. Compensating for systematic Spitzer errors using a Gaussian process model suggests that a higher mass M-dwarf binary at 6 kpc is equally likely. A Bayesian comparison based on a galactic model favors the larger-mass solutions. Abstract: The Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) is one of the four focal plane instruments on the James Webb Space Telescope. In this paper, we summarize the in-orbit performance of NIRSpec, as derived from data collected during its commissioning campaign and the first few months of nominal science operations. More specifically, we discuss the performance of some critical hardware components such as the two NIRSpec Hawaii-2RG (H2RG) detectors, wheel mechanisms, and the micro-shutter array. We also summarize the accuracy of the two target acquisition procedures used to accurately place science targets into the slit apertures, discuss the current status of the spectro-photometric and wavelength calibration of NIRSpec spectra, and provide the as measured sensitivity in all NIRSpec science modes. 32. Multi-phase gas interactions on subarcsec scales in the shocked IGM of Stephan's Quintet with JWST and ALMA

Abstract: We combine JWST and HST imaging with ALMA~CO(2-1) spectroscopy to study the highly turbulent multi-phase intergalactic medium (IGM) in Stephan's Quintet on 25-150 pc scales. Previous Spitzer observations revealed luminous H$_2$ line cooling across a 45 kpc-long filament, created by a giant shock-wave, following the collision with an intruder galaxy NGC~7318b. We demonstrate that the MIRI/F1000W/F770W filters are dominated by 0-0~S(3)~H$_2$ and a combination of PAH and 0-0~S(5)~H$_2$ emission. They reveal the dissipation of kinetic energy as massive clouds experience collisions, interactions and likely destruction/re-cycling within different phases of the IGM. In one kpc-scaled structure, warm H$_2$ formed a triangular-shaped head and tail of compressed and stripped gas behind a narrow shell of cold H$_2$. In another region, two cold molecular clumps with very different velocities are connected by an arrow-shaped stream of warm, probably shocked, H$_2$ suggesting a cloud-cloud collision is occurring. In both regions, a high warm-to-cold molecular gas fraction indicates that the cold clouds are being disrupted and converted into warm gas. We also map gas associated with an apparently forming dwarf galaxy. We suggest that the primary mechanism for exciting strong mid-IR H$_2$ lines throughout Stephan's Quintet is through a fog of warm gas created by the shattering of denser cold molecular clouds and mixing/recycling in the post-shocked gas. A full picture of the diverse kinematics and excitation of the warm H$_2$ will require future JWST mid-IR spectroscopy. Abstract: The influx of non-linear power electronic loads into the distribution network has the potential to disrupt the existing distribution transformer operations. They were not designed to mediate the excessive heating losses generated from the harmonics. To have a good understanding of current standing challenges, a knowledge of the generation and load mix as well as the current harmonic estimations are essential for designing transformers and evaluating their performance. In this paper, we investigate a mixture of essential power electronic loads for a household designed in PSCAD/EMTdc and their potential impacts on transformer eddy current losses and derating using harmonic analysis. The various scenarios have been studied with increasing PV penetrations. The peak load conditions are chosen for each scenario to perform a transformer derating analysis. Our findings reveal that in the presence of high power electronic loads (especially third harmonics), along with increasing PV generation may worsen transformer degradation. Abstract: Extremely red quasars, with bolometric luminosities exceeding $10^{47}$ erg s$^{-1}$, are a fascinating high-redshift population that is absent in the local universe. They are the best candidates for supermassive black holes accreting at rates at or above the Eddington limit, and they are associated with the most rapid and powerful outflows of ionized gas known to date. They are also hosted by massive galaxies. Here we present the first integral field unit (IFU) observations of a high-redshift quasar obtained by the Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) on board the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), which targeted SDSSJ165202.64+172852.3, an extremely red quasar at $z=2.94$. JWST observations reveal extended ionized gas - as traced by [OIII]$\lambda$5007\AA - in the host galaxy of the quasar, its outflow, and the circumgalactic medium. The complex morphology and kinematics imply that the quasar resides in a very dense environment with several interacting companion galaxies within projected distances of 10-15 kpc. The high density of the environment and the large velocities of the companion galaxies suggest that this system may represent the core of a forming cluster of galaxies. Abstract: The NIRSpec instrument on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) brings the first multi-object spectrograph (MOS) into space, enabled by a programmable Micro Shutter Array (MSA) of ~250,000 individual apertures. During the 6-month Commissioning period, the MSA performed admirably, completing ~800 reconfigurations with an average success rate of ~96% for commanding shutters open in science-like patterns. We show that 82.5% of the unvignetted shutter population is usable for science, with electrical short masking now the primary cause of inoperable apertures. In response, we propose a plan to recheck existing shorts during nominal operations, which is expected to reduce the number of affected shutters. We also present a full assessment of the Failed Open and Failed Closed shutter populations, which both show a marginal increase in line with predictions from ground testing. We suggest an amendment to the Failed Closed shutter flagging scheme to improve flexibility for MSA configuration planning. Abstract: This paper characterizes the actual science performance of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), as determined from the six month commissioning period. We summarize the performance of the spacecraft, telescope, science instruments, and ground system, with an emphasis on differences from pre-launch expectations. Commissioning has made clear that JWST is fully capable of achieving the discoveries for which it was built. Moreover, almost across the board, the science performance of JWST is better than expected; in most cases, JWST will go deeper faster than expected. 41. Dark matter halos and scaling relations of extremely massive spiral galaxies from extended HI rotation curves

Abstract: We present new and archival atomic hydrogen (\hi) observations of \galnum\ of the most massive spiral galaxies in the local Universe ($M_\star>10^{11} \, \mathrm{M}_\odot$). From 3D kinematic modeling of the datacubes, we derive extended \hi\ rotation curves, and from these, we estimate masses of the dark matter halos and specific angular momenta of the discs. We confirm that massive spiral galaxies lie at the upper ends of the Tully-Fisher relation (mass vs velocity, $M \propto V^{4}$) and Fall relation (specific angular momentum vs mass, $j \propto M^{0.6}$), in both stellar and baryonic forms, with no significant deviations from single power laws. We study the connections between baryons and dark matter through the stellar (and baryon)-to-halo ratios of mass $f_\mathrm{M} \equiv M_\star/M_\mathrm{h}$ and specific angular momentum $f_\mathrm{j} \equiv j_\star/j_\mathrm{h}$ and $f_\mathrm{j,bar} \equiv j_\mathrm{bar}/j_\mathrm{h}$. Combining our sample with others from the literature for less massive disc-dominated galaxies, we find that $f_\mathrm{M}$ rises monotonically with $M_\star$ and $M_\mathrm{h}$ (instead of the inverted-U shaped $f_\mathrm{M}$ for spheroid-dominated galaxies), while $f_\mathrm{j}$ and $f_\mathrm{j,bar}$ are essentially constant near unity over four decades in mass. Our results indicate that disc galaxies constitute a self-similar population of objects closely linked to the self-similarity of their dark halos. This picture is reminiscent of early analytical models of galaxy formation wherein discs grow by relatively smooth and gradual inflow, isolated from disruptive events such as major mergers and strong AGN feedback, in contrast to the more chaotic growth of spheroids., Comment: Accepted for publication on MNRAS

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: This study examined client ratings of 26 facilitators and barriers to anxiety improvement approximately 6 years after randomization to treatment for anxiety. METHOD: 319 youth (average 17.12 years old; 82.1% Caucasian; 58.6% female) participated in the longitudinal follow-up study to child and adolescent anxiety multimodal study (CAMS), a randomized controlled trial of medication, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), combination, and placebo. RESULTS: Correcting for multiple comparisons, CBT components (i.e., problem solving, changing unhelpful thoughts, relaxation skills) were rated significantly more helpful among youth without, versus with, an anxiety disorder at follow-up. Barriers that differentiated youth with and without an anxiety disorder included being bullied and difficulty applying therapy content to new situations. Comparisons between youth with different anxiety disorder trajectories (e.g., stable remission, relapsed, or chronically ill) also revealed several differences. CONCLUSION: Findings suggest that client-rated facilitators and barriers covary with anxiety disorder recovery and may serve as useful tools when evaluating long-term treatment efficacy.

45. Practice Makes Proficient: Evaluation of Implementation Fidelity Following COMPASS Consultation Training

Abstract: A training package for the Collaborative Model for Promoting Competence and Success (COMPASS), a multilevel consultation and coaching intervention for improved educational outcomes of students with autism, was developed and evaluated. Using a Hybrid Type 3 design with emphasis on implementation and a multidimensional approach to evaluating implementation outcomes, we tested the training package with community-based consultant trainees (CTs) unfamiliar with COMPASS and evaluated acceptance, appropriateness, feasibility, and fidelity from multiple sources (trainees, teachers, and parents). Results confirm that COMPASS-naïve CTs can be successfully trained. At least one feedback session was needed to achieve proficiency. Initial fidelity ratings between researchers and CTs were disparate suggesting self-report may not be adequate. Four feedback opportunities were required to achieve proficiency in writing intervention plans, an activity particularly challenging for CTs. Teachers and parents perceived COMPASS as acceptable, appropriate, and feasible. CTs knowledge of evidence-based practices (EBPs) increased significantly following training; however, positive attitudes toward EBPs did not. The implementation outcomes suggest that the training package was effective for training CTs; however, additional practice with writing intervention plans is warranted.

Abstract: Summary: Male subfertility or infertility is a common condition often characterized by men producing a low number of sperm with poor quality. To gain insight into this condition, we performed a quantitative proteomic analysis of semen samples obtained from infertile and fertile men. At least 6 proteins showed significant differences in regulation of alternatively spliced isoforms. To investigate this link between aberrant alternative splicing and production of poor-quality spermatozoa, we overexpressed the hnrnpH/F-orthologue Glorund (Glo) in Drosophila, which was also found to be abundant in poor quality human sperm. Transgenic animals produced low numbers of morphologically defective spermatozoa and aberrant formation of the “dense body,” an organelle akin to the mammalian manchette. Furthermore, fertility trials demonstrated that transgenic flies were either completely infertile or highly subfertile. These findings suggest that dysregulation of hnrnpH/F is likely to result in the production of low-quality semen, leading to subfertility or infertility in men.

47. The CO emission in the Taffy Galaxies (UGC 12914/5) at 60pc resolution-I: The battle for star formation in the turbulent Taffy Bridge

Abstract: We present ALMA observations at a spatial resolution of 0.2 arcsec (60 pc) of CO emission from the Taffy galaxies (UGC 12914/5). The observations are compared with narrow-band Pa$\alpha$, mid-IR, radio continuum and X-ray imaging, plus optical spectroscopy. The galaxies have undergone a recent head-on collision, creating a massive gaseous bridge which is known to be highly turbulent. The bridge contains a complex web of narrow molecular filaments and clumps. The majority of the filaments are devoid of star formation, and fall significantly below the Kennicutt-Schmidt relationship for normal galaxies, especially for the numerous regions undetected in Pa$\alpha$ emission. Within the loosely connected filaments and clumps of gas we find regions of high velocity dispersion which appear gravitationally unbound for a wide range of likely values of $X_{\rm CO}$. Like the "Firecracker" region in the Antennae system, they would require extremely high external dynamical or thermal pressure to stop them dissipating rapidly on short crossing timescales of 2-5~Myrs. We suggest that the clouds may be transient structures within a highly turbulent multi-phase medium which is strongly suppressing star formation. Despite the overall turbulence in the system, stars seem to have formed in compact hotspots within a kpc-sized extragalactic HII region, where the molecular gas has a lower velocity dispersion than elsewhere, and shows evidence for a collision with an ionized gas cloud. Like the shocked gas in the Stephan's Quintet group, the conditions in the Taffy bridge shows how difficult it is to form stars within a turbulent, multi-phase, gas., Comment: 23 pages, 1 Appendix, 17 figures

This paper presents a streamlined graph-based topology assessment for the integrated power system transmission and distribution networks. Graph analyses were performed based on the integrated graph of modified miniWECC grid model and IEEE 8500-node test feeder model, high performance computing platform with 40 nodes and total 2400 CPUs has been utilized to process this integrated graph, which has 100,000+ nodes and 10,000+ IBRs. Abstract: The Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) offers the first opportunity to use integral-field spectroscopy from space at near-infrared wavelengths. More specifically, NIRSpec's integral-field unit can obtain spectra covering the wavelength range $0.6 - 5.3~\mu$m for a contiguous 3.1 arcsec $\times$ 3.2 arcsec sky area at spectral resolutions of $R \approx 100$, 1000, and 2700. In this paper we describe the optical and mechanical design of the NIRSpec integral-field spectroscopy mode, together with its expected performance. We also discuss a few recommended observing strategies, some of which are driven by the fact that NIRSpec is a multipurpose instrument with a number of different observing modes, which are discussed in companion papers. We briefly discuss the data processing steps required to produce wavelength- and flux-calibrated data cubes that contain the spatial and spectral information. Abstract: As power distribution systems evolve in complexity and scale, the coordination and control of distributed energy resources (DERs), intelligent devices, and agents become increasingly challenging. Distribution utilities invest in advanced distribution management systems (ADMSs) and distributed energy resource management systems (DERMSs) to enhance distribution systems’ reliability, resiliency, and efficiency. Standardizing the Application Programming Interface (API) for ADMS applications is crucial to accelerate the integration of advanced distribution technologies. This paper introduces a distributed application architecture within the GridAPPS-D platform, aiming to address the limitations of centralized architectures in terms of scalability, maintainability, and flexibility. The proposed architecture draws inspiration from the Laminar Coordination Framework and is validated through extensive stakeholder engagement. Emphasizing extensibility, boundary deference, structural scalability, and securability, the layered framework is well-suited for large-scale distribution networks with diverse grid-edge devices and ownership structures. The contributions of this paper include a distributed layered architecture with defined distributed areas, a Common Information Model (CIM)-based standardized API for developing and deploying distributed applications (Distributed App API), and the design process and reference implementation of distributed services and applications. Based on laminar coordination, the software architecture combines centralized, distributed, and edge-control paradigms for effective distributed operations. The paper concludes with extending the centralized API in GridAPPS-D to distributed APIs for standards-based message exchange, emphasizing the need for scalable communication to coordinate diverse distributed agents. This work provides a foundation for advancing the field of distributed control in power distribution systems, supporting both centralized and distributed analytics and control arrangements.
