1. We examined the effect of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a component of Gram-negative bacteria, on food passage in the digestive tract of chickens (Gallus gallus) in order to clarify whether bacterial infection affects food passage in birds. 2. Food passage in the crop was significantly reduced by intraperitoneal (IP) injection of LPS while it did not affect the number of defecations, suggesting that LPS may affect food passage only in the upper digestive tract. 3. Similar to LPS, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), one of the mediators of LPS, also reduced crop-emptying rate in chickens while it had no effect on the number of defecations. 4. Pretreatment with indomethacin, which is an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase (COX), a prostaglandin synthase, had no effect on LPS-induced inhibition of crop emptying. 5. IP injection of LPS did not affect the mRNA expression of COX2 in the upper digestive tract of chickens. 6. Abstract: Hydrogen-enhanced localized plasticity (HELP) is an acceptable mechanism for hydrogen embrittlement which is based on the experimental observations and the theoretical computations. The underlying principle in the HELP theory is that the presence of hydrogen causes the localization of the slip bands which results in the decrease of the fracture strength. In a sample under plane-strain tensile stress, plastic instability can lead to either the concentration of plastic flow in a narrow neck or bifurcation from homogeneous deformation into a mode of an exclusively localized narrow band of intense shear. Recently, it has been demonstrated that the presence of hydrogen can indeed induce shear banding bifurcation at macroscopic strains. By using a steady-state equilibrium equation for hydrogen diffusion analysis, the effect of hydrogen on the bifurcation of a homogeneous deformation in a plane-strain tension specimen into a necking or a shear localization mode of deformation has already been studied. In the present research, using a transient hydrogen diffusion analysis and introducing a new constitutive equation accompanied by considering the reduction in the local flow stress upon hydrogen dissolution into the lattice, the effect of hydrogen on shear localization is investigated. In addition, progress has been made in that, the changes in the distribution of the total and trapping hydrogen concentrations through the loading time and particularly during the development of the necking event have been determined. STUDY DESIGN.: Sham-operation-controlled animal study to assess alterations in blood flow in the spinal cord in a chronic compression model. Laboratory investigation. OBJECTIVE.: Cervical myelopathy is a common cause of disability in elderly patients. Hypothesis was made that ischemia subsequent to the spinal cord compression plays an important role in the pathogenesis of the spinal cord dysfunction. This study was undertaken to assess alterations in the blood flow of the spinal cord under chronic compression in a rat model. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA.: Histologic study of spinal cord from patients with spondylotic myelopathy showed ischemic tissue changes. Experimentally, spinal cord hypoperfusion in combination with chronic spinal cord compression induced myelopathy in dogs. We previously showed that chronic compression of the spinal cord in rats produces gradual deterioration of mobility of the animals accompanied by cord tissue degeneration compatible with ischemic changes. METHODS.: Chronic compression of the cervical spinal cord was implemented by implantation of a thin urethane polymer sheet under the C5-C6 laminae, which expands by absorbing tissue water over 48-72 hours. The control group underwent sham operation. Twelve weeks later, blood flow to the C3-C4 and C5-C6 spinal cord segments were measured by fluorescent microsphere methods. RESULTS.: In the control group, the blood flow in the C5-C6 segment was larger than C3-C4 segment. In the compression group, the blood flow in the C5-C6 was significantly reduced compared to the C3-C4 segment. CONCLUSION.: Under chronic focal spinal cord compression, there was a decrease of the blood flow in the compressed segment in comparison to the rostral segment. 1. The purpose of the present study was to examine whether zymosan, which is a component of fungi, affects feed passage through the digestive tract in chicks (Gallus gallus). 2. Intraperitoneal (IP) injection of 2.5 mg zymosan significantly reduced the crop-emptying rate and this effect was similar to that of 100 µg lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Zymosan affected phenol red transit from the proventriculus. 3. Zymosan significantly affected the gene expression of interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-6, IL-8 and histidine decarboxylase in various regions of the digestive tract. 4. Cuprous iodide (CuI) is an emerging wide-bandgap semiconductor of superior optical and transport properties. In particular, CuI shows high stability and large oscillator strength of free excitons that are of great advantage for optoelectronic applications. However, thin films of CuI reported so far have not been genuine single crystals, containing a sizable density of impurity and defect. Here, we demonstrate a dramatic improvement in the quality of CuI films grown by molecular beam epitaxy on a lattice-matched InAs substrate. The film is revealed to be in a single-crystal structure with high lattice coherence and an atomically flat surface. The low-temperature photoluminescence spectra exhibit extremely sharp emission from free excitons and much-suppressed emission from trapped states. The high-quality CuI films realized in the present study will not only facilitate the device application of CuI films but also provide unprecedented functionalities in halide semiconductors at the atomically sharp heterointerfaces. We report sub-picosecond photocarrier dynamics observed via emitted terahertz waves in a ferroelectric semiconductor Sn2P2S6. Excitation photon energy, intensity and polarization dependences of the photocarrier dynamics testify that the ultrafast photocurrent originates from the shift-current under interband excitation. The photocurrent excitation spectrum shows a quantitative agreement with that derived from first-principles calculations with the Berry connection integrated, showing the shift-current to be a sensitive feature in ferroelectrics. The terahertz emission spectroscopy is a powerful tool to identify the intricate carrier dynamics under pulsed photoexcitation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Photoexcitation in solids brings about transitions of electrons/holes between different electronic bands. If the solid lacks an inversion symmetry, these electronic transitions support spontaneous photocurrent due to the geometric phase of the constituting electronic bands: the Berry connection. This photocurrent, termed shift current, is expected to emerge on the timescale of primary photoexcitation process. We observe ultrafast evolution of the shift current in a prototypical ferroelectric semiconductor antimony sulfur iodide (SbSI) by detecting emitted terahertz electromagnetic waves. By sweeping the excitation photon energy across the bandgap, ultrafast electron dynamics as a source of terahertz emission abruptly changes its nature, reflecting a contribution of Berry connection on interband optical transition. The shift excitation carries a net charge flow and is followed by a swing over of the electron cloud on a subpicosecond timescale. Understanding these substantive characters of the shift current with the help of first-principles calculation will pave the way for its application to ultrafast sensors and solar cells. Abstract: The effect of energy balance on the growth hormone (GH) secretory responsiveness to growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) has not been determined in ruminant animals. Therefore, we examined the effects of intravenous injections of 0, 3.3, and 6.6μg ghrelin/kg body weight (BW), with and without GHRH at 0.25μg/kg BW, on GH secretory responsiveness in both the fed and fasted sheep. The injections were carried out at 48h (Fasting state) and 3h (Satiety state) after feeding. Blood samples were taken every 10minutes, from 30minutes before to 120minutes after the injection. Low (3.3μg/kg BW) and high (6.6μg/kg BW) doses of ghrelin stimulated GH secretion significantly (P <.05) greater in the Satiety state than in the Fasting state. Growth hormone-releasing hormone plus both doses of ghrelin stimulated GH secretion significantly (P <.05) greater in the Satiety state than in the Fasting state. Ghrelin and GHRH exerted a synergistic effect in the Satiety state, but not in the Fasting state. Plasma ghrelin levels were maintained significantly (P <.05) greater in the Fasting state than in the Satiety state except the temporal increases after ghrelin administration. Plasma free fatty acid (FFA) concentrations were significantly (P <.01) greater in the Fasting state than in the Satiety state. In conclusion, the present study has demonstrated for the first time that ghrelin differentially modulates GH secretory response to GHRH according to feeding states in ruminant animals. Summary Peroxidase-labeled staphylococcal protein A, streptococcal protein G, and antibodies directed against Mus musculus (mouse), Rattus norvegicus (rat), Mesocretus auratus (hamster), and Peromyscusleucopus were examined for their reactivity with immunoglobulin G (IgG) from various rodent species. The purpose of this study was to identify the optimal secondary antibodies or reagents for specific serodiagnosis of hantavirus infection in various rodent species. Using ELISA, a total of 65 sera from 29 rodent species of the family Muridae and one serum sample from family Octodontidae were compared for IgG reactivity with the six different reagents. The results demonstrate that the reactivities of the secondary antibodies and reagents to the sera varied, even among sera from rodents of the same genus. Hantavirus-specific antibody ELISA revealed that hantavirus-infected rodent sera obtained from M. musculus, R. norvegicus, Apodemus agrarius, A. peninsulae, and Bandicota indica bound to the six different conjugates in a similar pattern as that detected in IgG ELISA. These results indicate that the applicability of secondary antibodies and protein A and G should be carefully evaluated before use for serodiagnosis in different rodent species. Previously, the authors reported that bios active glass, promoted formation of nodules in cultured periodontal-ligament fibroblasts and high concentrations of calcium and silicon were detected in the culture medium. Herein the effects of bioactive glass, calcium alone and calcium and silicon for formation, of nodules on the periodontal- ligament fibroblasts are examined. The cells were cultured with bioactive glass, without bioactive glass, calcium and silicon, with calcium. alone and with calcium and silicon. The cell growth, alkaline- phosphatase activity, amount of pro-collagen type I and the number of nodules were. measured periodically until the 21st day. The cell growth rate with calcium and silicon was the highest, however the rate with bioactive glass and calcium, atone were similar to that without them. The alkaline- phosphatase activity and the amount of pro-collagen showed peaks at the 11th day. At the peak, the alkalineaphosphatase activity with bioactive glass or calcium and silicon, and the pro-collagen with bioactive glass was higher than without them. The number of nodules with bioactive glass, calcium alone or calcium and silicon was greater than without them. These findings suggested that the combination of calcium and silicon released from bioactive glass was concerned with the formation of nodules on the periodontal-ligament cells. A spontaneous photocurrent, termed a shift current, can flow in noncentrosymmetric bulk crystals due to the topological nature of the constituting electronic bands. A shift current with a less dissipative character may have remarkable advantages over the conventional drift photocurrent driven by a built-in potential or external electric field. We revisit the generation and transport of the shift current in a prototypical ferroelectric semiconductor SbSI near its band-gap energy. It is revealed that a switchable shift current is steadily generated by photoexcitation down to low temperatures, appears over a distance of millimeter range in a highly insulating bulk without noticeable decay, and largely exceeds the polarization charge in the sample, reflecting its Berry phase origin.
