Abstract

For any endomorphism $\varphi$ on a real inner product space $V$, the leaf $\Psi(\varphi)$ of $\varphi$ is defined by $\Psi(\varphi)=\{\frac{\|\varphi({v})\|}{\|{v}\|}\,\,e^{\sqrt{-1}\,\theta}\mid {v}\neq{0}\}\subset\overline{\mathfrak{H}}=\mathfrak{H}\cup\mathbb{R}\cup\{\infty\}$, where $\theta$ is the angle between ${v}$ and $\varphi({v})$ for ${v}\in V{\smallsetminus}\{{0}\}$, and $\mathfrak{H}=\{z\in\mathbb{C}\mid{\rm im}\,z>0\}$. The leaf when $\dim V\le2$ is a circle or a bended circle, but the leaf when $\dim V\ge3$ is not so simple. When $\dim V\ge3$, the leaf is convex on the Poincar\'e metric, and contains all eigenvalues with nonnegative imaginary part. Moreover, the leaf of a normal endomorphism is the minimum convex domain in $\overline{\mathfrak{H}}$ containing all eigenvalues with nonnegative imaginary part. We discuss the simplest use of leaves to compute the operator norms. We expect that some algebraic properties of the endomorphisms can be read from the shape of the leaves.

Abstract

This study developed a novel thermal control system to cool detectors of the General AntiParticle Spectrometer (GAPS) before its flights. GAPS is a balloon-borne cosmic-ray observation experiment. In its payload, GAPS contains over 1000 silicon detectors that must be cooled below $-40^{\circ}\mbox{C}$. All detectors are thermally coupled to a unique heat-pipe system (HPS) that transfers heat from the detectors to a radiator. The radiator is designed to be cooled below $-50^{\circ}\mbox{C}$ during the flight by exposure to space. The pre-flight state of the detectors is checked on the ground at 1 atm and ambient room temperature, but the radiator cannot be similarly cooled. The authors have developed a ground cooling system (GCS) to chill the detectors for ground testing. The GCS consists of a cold plate, a chiller, and insulating foam. The cold plate is designed to be attached to the radiator and cooled by a coolant pumped by the chiller. The payload configuration, including the HPS, can be the same as that of the flight. The GCS design was validated by thermal tests using a scale model. The GCS design is simple and provides a practical guideline, including a simple estimation of appropriate thermal insulation thickness, which can be easily adapted to other applications., Comment: 8 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables

14. Lissajous 3-braids

Abstract

We classify 3-braids arising from collision-free choreographic motions of 3 bodies on Lissajous plane curves, and present a parametrization in terms of levels and (Christoffel) slopes. Each of these Lissajous 3-braids represents a pseudo-Anosov mapping class whose dilatation increases when the level ascends in the natural numbers or when the slope descends in the Stern-Brocot tree. We also discuss 4-symbol frieze patterns that encode cutting sequences of geodesics along the Farey tessellation in relation to odd continued fractions of quadratic surds for the Lissajous 3-braids., Comment: Journal of the Mathematical Society of Japan (to appear)

Abstract

Given a plane triangle $\Delta$, one can construct a new triangle $\Delta'$ whose vertices are intersections of two cevian triples of $\Delta$. We extend the family of operators $\Delta\mapsto\Delta'$ by complexifying the defining two cevian parameters and study its rich structure from arithmetic-geometric viewpoints. We also find another useful parametrization of the operator family via finite Fourier analysis and apply it to investigate area-preserving operators on triangles., Comment: Journal of Geometry

Abstract

The joint JAXA/NASA ASTRO-H mission is the sixth in a series of highly successful X-ray missions developed by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS), with a planned launch in 2015. The ASTRO-H mission is equipped with a suite of sensitive instruments with the highest energy resolution ever achieved at E > 3 keV and a wide energy range spanning four decades in energy from soft X-rays to gamma-rays. The simultaneous broad band pass, coupled with the high spectral resolution of Delta E < 7 eV of the micro-calorimeter, will enable a wide variety of important science themes to be pursued. Abstract

The joint JAXA/NASA ASTRO-H mission is the sixth in a series of highly successful X-ray missions initiated by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS). ASTRO-H will investigate the physics of the high-energy universe via a suite of four instruments, covering a very wide energy range, from 0.3 keV to 600 keV. These instruments include a high-resolution, high-throughput spectrometer sensitive over 0.3-2 keV with high spectral resolution of Delta E < 7 eV, enabled by a micro-calorimeter array located in the focal plane of thin-foil X-ray optics; hard X-ray imaging spectrometers covering 5-80 keV, located in the focal plane of multilayer-coated, focusing hard X-ray mirrors; a wide-field imaging spectrometer sensitive over 0.4-12 keV, with an X-ray CCD camera in the focal plane of a soft X-ray telescope; and a non-focusing Compton-camera type soft gamma-ray detector, sensitive in the 40-600 keV band. Abstract

The joint JAXA/NASA ASTRO-H mission is the sixth in a series of highly successful X-ray missions initiated by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS). ASTRO-H will investigate the physics of the high-energy universe by performing high-resolution, high-throughput spectroscopy with moderate angular resolution. ASTRO-H covers very wide energy range from 0.3 keV to 600 keV. ASTRO-H allows a combination of wide band X-ray spectroscopy (5-80 keV) provided by multilayer coating, focusing hard X-ray mirrors and hard X-ray imaging detectors, and high energy-resolution soft X-ray spectroscopy (0.3-12 keV) provided by thin-foil X-ray optics and a micro-calorimeter array. The mission will also carry an X-ray CCD camera as a focal plane detector for a soft X-ray telescope (0.4-12 keV) and a non-focusing soft gamma-ray detector (40-600 keV) . The micro-calorimeter system is developed by an international collaboration led by ISAS/JAXA and NASA.
