3. Fission dynamics for capture reactions in Ni-58,Ni-64+Pb-208 systems: New results in terms of thermal energy and neutron multiplicity correlated distributions

Abstract

The neutron multidetector DeMoN has been used to investigate the symmetric splitting dynamics in the reactions Ni-58,Ni-64 + Pb-208 With excitation energies ranging from 65 to 186 MeV for the composite system. An analysis based on the new backtracing technique has been applied on the neutron data to determine the two-dimensional correlations between the parent composite system initial thermal energy (E-CN(th)) and the total neutron multiplicity (nu(tot)), and between pre- and post-scission neutron multiplicities (nu(pre) and nu(post), respectively). The nu(pre) distribution shape indicates the possible coexistence of fast-fission and fusion-fission for the system Ni-58 + (208)pb (E-beam = 8.86 A MeV). The analysis of the neutron multiplicities in the framework of the combined dynamical statistical model (CDSM) gives a reduced friction coefficient beta = 23 +/- (25)(12) x 10(21) s(-1), above the one-body dissipation limit. The corresponding fission time is tau(f) = 40 +/- (46)(20) x 10(-21) s. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

The H-4 resonance was investigated in the transfer reactions H-2(t,p)H-4 and H-3(t,d)H-4 using cryogenic liquid targets of deuterium and tritium and 58 MeV triton beam. The multidetector system with a large angular acceptance was used to measure the recoil protons and deuterons in coincidences with tritons or neutrons from the decay of H-4. Data analysis involved careful considerations made for the competing processes of final state interaction and quasifree scattering. The experimental data show a peak with resonance parameters E-res = 3.05 +/- 0.19 MeV and Gamma(obs) = 4.18 +/- 1.02 MeV. The pole of S-matrix corresponding to the physical values of energy and width, E-0 = 1.99 +/- 0.37 MeV and Gamma(0) = 2.85 +/- 10.3 MeV, has been extracted. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

The neutron spectra associated to the two fission modes of Th-226 have been measured in coincidence with the fragment yields of the O-18 + Pb-208 reaction at E-lab = 78 MeV. The pre- and post-fission multiplicities and temperatures have been extracted. Surprisingly, the prefission neutron multiplicities associated with the asymmetric mode are larger than those associated with the symmetric mode.

Abstract

In bombardments of Pu-244 with S-34 we discovered the alpha-decaying nuclide (273)110. We conducted an extensive off-line search of the raw data for event sequences which fit the expected pattern of implantation in a position-sensitive detector and subsequent decay of (273)110 and its descendants. We observed one three-member sequence of genetically linked alpha decays, resulting in E(alpha)=11.35 MeV, a half-life of 0.3(-0.2)(+1.3) ms, and a production cross section of about 0.4 pb for (273)110. Other possible (273)110 event chains were also observed. The measured a-particle energy for the N=163 nuclide (273)110 provides direct evidence for a neutron shell closure at N=162.

Abstract

Experimental search for (5)H using a secondary beam of (6)He has been performed. The transfer reaction (1)H((6)He,(2)He)(5)H was studied by detecting two protons emitted from the decay of (2)He. A peak consistent with a (5)H resonance at 1.7+/-0.3 MeV above the n+n+t threshold was observed, with a width of 1.9+/-0.4 MeV. The angular distribution of the (1)H((6)He,(2)He)(5)H reaction was measured as well as the energy correlation of the two protons.
