Maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the most widely cultivated grain crops globally. In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), it plays an important role in ensuring both food and income security for smallholder farmers. This study was conducted to (i) assess the performances of testcross hybrids constituted from maize lethal necrosis (MLN) tolerant doubled haploid (DH) lines under various management conditions; (ii) estimate the combining ability effects and determine the nature of gene action in the DH lines; and (iii) identify DH lines and testcross hybrids for resistance to MLN, high grain yield, and other important traits. Eleven DH lines were crossed with 11 single-cross testers using the line-by-tester mating design, and 115 successful testcross hybrids were generated. These hybrids, along with five commercial check hybrids, were evaluated across four optimum management conditions, two MLN artificial inoculations, and one managed drought environment in Kenya. Under each management condition, the effects of genotypes, environments, and genotype-by-environment interactions were significant for grain yield (GY) and most other traits. Hybrids T1/L3, T10/L3, and T11/L3 exhibited higher grain yields under at least two management conditions. A combining ability analysis revealed that additive gene effects were more important than non-additive effects for GY and most other traits, except for leaf senescence (SEN) and MLN disease severity score. DH line L3 exhibited a desirable general combining ability (GCA) effect for GY, while L5 was the best general combiner for anthesis date (AD) and plant height (PH) across all management conditions. DH lines L2, L6, and L7 showed negative GCA effects for MLN disease severity. Single-cross testers T11 and T10 were good general combiners for GY under all management conditions. Hybrids T2/L11, T9/L10, and T2/L10 demonstrated high specific combining ability (SCA) effects for GY under all conditions. This study identified DH lines and testers with favorable GCA effects for grain yield, MLN resistance, and other agronomic traits that can be used in breeding programs to develop high-yielding and MLN-resistant maize varieties. Better-performing testcross hybrids identified in the current study could be verified through on-farm testing and released for commercial production to replace MLN-susceptible, low-yield hybrids grown in the target ecologies. African eggplant (AEP) (Solanum aethiopicum group Gilo) is an important vegetable with considerable economic value in Ghana and tropical Africa. However, fungal diseases threaten its cultivation. Surveys conducted in 2021 and 2022 growing seasons across 35 commercial farms in five regions of Ghana revealed symptoms of crown rot and wilt affecting AEP. This study was undertaken to identify and characterise 36 fungal isolates causing these diseases in AEPs using morphological, molecular and pathogenicity assays. Morphological and molecular analyses of the Btub2, Tef‐1α and Rpb2 sequences identified two Fusarium species (F. elaeidis and F. fredkrugeri) and three Neocosmospora species (N. falciforme, N. suttoniana and N. solani) associated with the plant diseases. F. elaeidis (14 isolates) and N. falciforme (14) were the most commonly isolated species from symptomatic plants. Specifically, F. elaeidis was found in wilting plants, while F. fredkrugeri and the three Neocosmospora spp. were more associated with wilting plants with crown rot symptoms than plants with only wilt symptoms. All identified species exhibited pathogenicity when inoculated onto AEP roots and stems, confirming field observations. F. elaeidis was the most aggressive in inducing wilt symptoms, while N. solani and N. suttoniana were particularly aggressive in inducing crown rot symptoms. This study is the first to document that F. elaeidis, F. fredkrugeri, N. falciforme and N. suttoniana are pathogens causing wilt and crown rot in AEP in Ghana. The majority of the world's cacao for chocolate manufacture is produced in West Africa. Cocoa breeding programs in West Africa need genetic markers to reduce the time needed for improving cocoa by screening seedlings for the presence of the markers rather than mature plants for the phenotypic traits (i.e., marker-assisted selection [MAS]). For MAS to be successful, the breeder must have both access to markers linked to desired traits and a convenient marker-assay system that can be performed locally. In this study, microsatellite markers that flanked disease resistance quantitative trait loci (QTL) but could not be assayed conveniently in West Africa were converted using a genome walking method into single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers that could be assayed locally. The SNP and microsatellite markers were equally effective in identifying off-types in two different mapping populations of cacao. Background: Gari (especially in Nigeria) is an important West African food product made from cassava. It is an affordable, precooked, dry, easy to prepare and store food product. Eba is a stiff dough produced by reconstituting gari in hot water. Gari and eba quality is an important driver of varietal acceptance by farmers, processors, and consumers., Results: This study characterized the genetic variability, heritability, and correlations among quality-related traits of fresh roots, gari, and eba. Thirty-three diverse genotypes, including landraces and released and advanced breeding genotypes, were used in this study. In total, 40 traits categorized into fresh root quality, colour, functional, and texture properties trait groups were assessed. We observed broad phenotypic variability among the genotypes used in this study. Dry matter content had a positive (P < 0.05) correlation with gari%, bulk density and a negative correlation with eba hardness and gumminess. Broad-sense heritability across all environments varied considerably among the different trait groups: 62% to 79% for fresh root quality, 0% to 96% for colour, 0% to 79% for functional and 0% to 57% for texture properties., Conclusions: The stable broad-sense heritability found for gari%, gari and eba colour, bulk density, swelling index, and hardness measured using instrumental texture profile analysis coupled with sufficient variability in the population indicate good potential for genetic improvement of these traits through recurrent selection. Also, it is possible to genetically improve gari%, bulk density, and swelling power by simultaneously improving the dry matter content of fresh roots. © 2023 The Authors.
