Abstract

Ge two-dimensional hole gases in strained modulation-doped quantum-wells represent a promising material platform for future spintronic applications due to their excellent spin transport properties and the theoretical possibility of efficient spin manipulation. Due to the continuous development of epitaxial growth recipes extreme high hole mobilities and low effective masses can be achieved, promising an efficient spin transport. Furthermore, the Ge two-dimensional hole gas (2DHG) can be integrated in the well-established industrial complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) devices technology. However, efficient electrical spin injection into a Ge 2DHG - a prerequisite for the realization of spintronic devices - has not yet been demonstrated. In this work, we report the fabrication and low-temperature magnetoresistance measurements of a laterally structured Mn5Ge3/Ge 2DHG/ Mn5Ge3 device. The ferromagnetic Mn5Ge3 contacts are grown directly into the Ge quantum well by means of an interdiffusion process with a spacing of approximately 130 nm. We observe a magnetoresistance signal for temperatures below 13 K possibly arising from successful spin injection. Abstract

Ge1-xSnx and Si1-x-yGeySnx alloys are promising materials for future opto- and nanoelectronics applications. These alloys enable effective band-gap engineering, broad adjustability of their lattice parameter, exhibit much higher carrier mobility than pure Si, and are compatible with the CMOS technology. Unfortunately, the equilibrium solid solubility of Sn in Si1-xGex is less than 1% and the pseudomorphic growth of Si1-x-yGeySnx on Ge or Si can cause in-plane compressive strain in the grown layer, degrading the superior properties of these alloys. Therefore, post-growth strain engineering by ultrafast non-equilibrium thermal treatments like pulse laser annealing (PLA) is needed to improve the layer quality. In this article, Ge0.94Sn0.06 and Si0.14Ge0.8Sn0.06 thin films grown on silicon-on-insulator substrates by molecular beam epitaxy were post growth thermally treated by PLA. The material is analyzed before and after the thermal treatments by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, secondary ion mass spectrometry, and Hall effect measurements. It is shown that after annealing, the material is single-crystalline with improved crystallinity than the as-grown layer. This is reflected in a significantly increased XRD reflection intensity, well-ordered atomic pillars, and increased active carrier concentrations up to 4x1019 cm-3.

12. Facilitating Well-Being: An Examination of an Online Trauma-Informed Faculty/Staff Training Designed to Support College Student Resilience

Abstract

College students report high psychological distress, mental health problems and anxiety. Research indicates that faculty and staff can help support these students in crisis, but there is limited trauma-informed training for higher education professionals who are not mental health counselors. This study explored an evidence-based online training program designed to help faculty/staff members facilitate well-being and resilience among college students. To test the training, a systematic program evaluation was conducted. Prior to completing the training, participants (n = 52) took a pretest. Then, after completing the training, they took a posttest. Results indicated a significant difference between pre and posttest. There were more positive attitudes toward trauma-informed approaches and resilience resources; stronger beliefs about prevalence and effects of psychological trauma; greater self-efficacy to perform trauma-informed approaches; and greater confidence in trauma-informed knowledge. Additionally, participants reported they were likely to use tools learned during the training. Thus, indicating that a self-paced, convenient, and culturally sensitive training may be beneficial for faculty and staff as they aid in student success. Practical implications, participant comments and specific suggestions for colleges are also discussed.

Abstract

We present results from novel field, lab and computer studies, that pave the way towards non-invasive classification of localised surface defects on running wind turbine rotors using infrared thermography (IRT). In particular, we first parametrise the problem from a fluid dynamical point of view using the roughness Reynolds number ($Re_k$) and demonstrate how the parameter regime relevant for modern wind turbines translate to parameter values that are currently feasible in typical wind tunnel and computer experiments. Second, we discuss preparatory wind tunnel and field measurements, that demonstrate a promising degree of sensitivity of the recorded IRT data w.r.t. the key control parameter ($Re_k$), which is a minimum requirement for the proposed classification technique to work. 19. A novel KCNC3 gene variant in the voltage-dependent Kv3.3 channel in an atypical form of SCA13 with dominant central vertigo

Abstract

Potassium channel mutations play an important role in neurological diseases, such as spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA). SCA is a heterogeneous autosomal-dominant neurodegenerative disorder with multiple sub-entities, such as SCA13, which is characterized by mutations in the voltage-gated potassium channel Kv3.3 (KCNC3). In this study, we present a rare and atypical case of SCA13 with a predominant episodic central rotational vertigo, while the patient suffered only from mild progressive cerebellar symptoms, such as dysarthria, ataxia of gait and stand, and recently a cognitive impairment. In this patient, we identified a heterozygous variant in KCNC3 (c.2023G > A, p.Glu675Lys) by next-generation sequencing. This Kv3.3E675K variant was studied using voltage-clamp recordings in Xenopus oocytes. While typical SCA13 variants are dominant-negative, show shifts in the voltage-dependence of activation or an altered TBK1 regulation, the Kv3.3E675K variant caused only a reduction in current amplitude and a more pronounced cumulative inactivation. Thus, the differences to phenotypes observed in patients with classical SCA13 mutations may be related to the mechanism of the observed Kv3.3 loss-of-function. Treatment of our patient with riluzole, a drug that is known to also activate potassium channels, turned out to be partly beneficial. Strikingly, we found that the Kv3.3 and Kv3.3E675K inactivation and the frequency-dependent cumulative inactivation was antagonized by increased extracellular potassium levels. Thus, and most importantly, carefully elevated plasma potassium levels in the physiological range, or novel drugs attenuating Kv3.3 inactivation might provide novel therapeutic approaches to rescue potassium currents of SCA13 variants per se. In addition, our findings broaden the phenotypic spectrum of Kv3.3 variants, expanding it to atypical phenotypes of Kv3.3-associated neurological disorders.

Abstract

This paper presents AlphaGarden: an autonomous polyculture garden that prunes and irrigates living plants in a 1.5m x 3.0m physical testbed. AlphaGarden uses an overhead camera and sensors to track the plant distribution and soil moisture. We model individual plant growth and interplant dynamics to train a policy that chooses actions to maximize leaf coverage and diversity. For autonomous pruning, AlphaGarden uses two custom-designed pruning tools and a trained neural network to detect prune points. We present results for four 60-day garden cycles. Results suggest AlphaGarden can autonomously achieve 0.96 normalized diversity with pruning shears while maintaining an average canopy coverage of 0.86 during the peak of the cycle. 36. Freshmen Anxiety and COVID-19: Practical Implications from an Online Intervention for Supporting Students Affected by Health Inequities

Abstract

Objective: This study explored how college freshmen, particularly those affected by health inequities, are affected by COVID-19 and whether they would use a university-created online wellness intervention for help. Participants: Nine-hundred and eighty-nine freshmen at a large southeastern university. Method: Students responded to an online survey regarding their anxiety, worry, number of life disruptions, perceived resilience and their use of the online intervention during the pandemic (June to mid-September 2020). Results: During COVID-19, Latinx, Black, women and non-heterosexual students reported significantly greater worry, daily life disruptions than their non-Latinx, white, male and heterosexual counterparts. Women and non-heterosexual students also reported greater anxiety and less resilience. Additionally, Latinx students reported using the university's online intervention for help during COVID-19 more than others. Overall, freshmen, especially Black and women students, reported the online intervention would help them with struggles. Conclusions: Universities should identify unique worries faced by students during a health crisis and provide institutional support. Practical implications are discussed.

37. The Games We Play: Improvisational Negotiation Strategies for the College Classroom

Abstract

The past few years have proven a need in higher education for tools that help educators and students maintain a flexible and highly adaptive approach to their coursework. Research into applied improvisation has shown that the improvisational mindset is beneficial to educational settings in this way, in part because of the way it encourages collaborative negotiations as part of the education process. Building on the work of improvisers in the fields of music, law, business, theatre, and medicine, this dissertation breaks down three specific types of negotiations found within improv: 1) Negotiations of Status; 2) Negotiations of Rule-Making; and 3) Negotiations of Authenticity. This work identifies the key components for success in those negotiations. It also provides opportunities for practical application of these negotiations using improv-based games and activities. This research indicates several benefits for educators and others who incorporate improvisational training into their work. Special attention is paid to the application of improvisation in areas such as classroom management and interpersonal relationship-building with students. It also highlights a few key games and activities that could prove beneficial as part of training for anyone engaged in the work of negotiations and communication.
