Simple Summary: Two new genera and two new species of Oecanthinae (Gryllidae) are described that are from northern Myanmar amber. They are the oldest representatives of tree crickets, supporting the previous estimation of the origin of Oecanthinae by molecular data. These new findings improve our knowledge of the evolution of the Gryllidae. The abundance of insects in Burmese amber illustrates a highly diverse insect community of the mid-Cretaceous, but the records of crickets are relatively rare. Here, we erect two new genera with two new species, Birmanioecanthus haplostichus gen. et sp. nov. and Apiculatus cretaceus gen. et sp. nov., based on two new specimens from northern Myanmar amber. These new species can be assigned to the subfamily Oecanthinae (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) by their prognathous head, slender body and metatibiae, and protibiae with large tympana. Abstract Karyotypes in the worldwide subfamily Oecanthinae show variations in diploid number, chromosome morphology, and sex-chromosome system. This study described the chromosome set and phylogenetic relationships of four Neotropical species, Oecanthus lineolatus, O. valensis, O. pallidus, and O. pictus. We used classical cytogenetics and Bayesian Inference for phylogenetic reconstruction, using the mitochondrial genes COI, 12S rRNA, and 16S rRNA; and analyzed the phylogenetic patterns of changes in chromosome numbers, using ChromEvol. We observed differences in chromosome number among species and two different sex-chromosome systems. Oecanthus pictus showed 2n = 21, X0♂/22, XX♀; O. lineolatus, 2n = 20, XY♂/XX♀; and O. valensis and O. pallidus, 2n = 18, XY♂/XX♀. The karyotype of Oecanthus was asymmetric, one group with large chromosomes and variation in heterochromatin distribution, and another with small acrocentric chromosomes. The phylogenetic tree recovered two main groups: one with the Palearctic species and another with species from different bioregions, but with low posterior probability. The Neotropical species grouped separately, O. valensis and O. pictus with Nearctic and Ethiopian species, and O. pallidus and O. lineolatus in another, well-supported clade. Together, the phylogenic and chromosome data suggest descending dysploidy events during the evolution of the group.

Hawaiian tree crickets are remarkably speciose and phenotypically diverse and yet we know very little about their behavior. I present the first description of courtship and mating in a member of this group. Leptogryllus elongatus Perkins inhabit the hollow fronds of giant tree ferns on the windward slope of Mauna Kea, on the Big Island of Hawaii. Unlike all other tree crickets, except for the closely related genus Thaumatogryllus, Leptogryllus lack a stridulum to produce song and have no auditory tympanum. In the absence of song, courtship in L. elongatus appears to be vibratory and tactile, in the form of tremulation and tapping of the male cerci against the body of the female. Tremulation by male L. elongatus takes the form of a rhythmic 'push-up' beginning at first contact and continuing until the postcopulatory dismount. During courtship, the male maneuvers his abdomen beneath the female and the female dorsally mounts the male. As in other tree crickets, copulation results in transfer of a small spermatophore composed on a external sperm sack and a tube running inside the genitalia of the dorsally mounted female. The rate of tremulation is relatively constant from first contact until copulation. Tremulation rate decreases after spermatophore transfer but increases dramatically when the female begins to move off the male. Another key difference is the lack of metanotal gland feeding in L. elongatus. Nevertheless, L. elongatus display prolonged postcopulatory mounted courtship which delays removal of the spermatophore by the female. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The acoustic signalling behaviour of many tree cricket species is easily observed and has been well described. Very little is known, however, about the receivers in these communication loops. The exception to this is a single Indian species ( Oecanthus henryi) which employs active auditory mechanics to enhance female sensitivity to quiet sounds at male calling frequencies. In most species, male calls have been described, but whether or not sender-receiver matching is present is uncertain. Here we investigate auditory mechanics in females of the North American black-horned tree cricket ( Oecanthus nigricornis). The response of the anterior tympanal membrane is nonlinear, exhibiting a lack of tuning at high amplitudes (60 dB and above) but as stimulus amplitude decreases, the membrane becomes tuned to around 4.3 kHz. The tuning of the membrane falls within the frequency range of male calls indicating sender-receiver matching at low amplitudes, which could aid localisation of the highly directional calls of males. The extent of active auditory mechanics in tympanal insects is not yet known, but this paper provides an indication that this may indeed be widespread in at least the Oecanthinae. Animals communicate in non-ideal and noisy conditions. The primary method they use to improve communication efficiency is sender-receiver matching: the receiver's sensory mechanism filters the impinging signal based on the expected signal. In the context of acoustic communication in crickets, such a match is made in the frequency domain. The males broadcast a mate attraction signal, the calling song, in a narrow frequency band centred on the carrier frequency (CF), and the females are most sensitive to sound close to this frequency. In tree crickets, however, the CF changes with temperature. The mechanisms used by female tree crickets to accommodate this change in CF were investigated at the behavioural and biomechanical level. At the behavioural level, female tree crickets were broadly tuned and responded equally to CFs produced within the naturally occurring range of temperatures (18 to 27°C). To allow such a broad response, however, the transduction mechanisms that convert sound into mechanical and then neural signals must also have a broad response. The tympana of the female tree crickets exhibited a frequency response that was even broader than suggested by the behaviour. Their tympana vibrate with equal amplitude to frequencies spanning nearly an order of magnitude. Such a flat frequency response is unusual in biological systems and cannot be modelled as a simple mechanical system. This feature of the tree cricket auditory system not only has interesting implications for mate choice and species isolation but may also prove exciting for bio-mimetic applications such as the design of miniature low frequency microphones.
