Background: There is scanty data on the usage and safety of herbal medicines in pregnancy and breast feeding. Though they may be efficacious on account of their long experience of usage, effects of these herbal preparations and the extent of usage in pregnancy and breastfeeding are not known. There were anecdotal claims of herbal medicine usage in pregnancy in Offinso North District. Objective: To determine the prevalence and the pattern of herbal medicine usage among pregnant women attending ANC in all the health facilities in Offinso North District and to determine the level of awareness of healthcare givers about these herbal medicines. Design: Cross-sectional study. Method: A standardized structured questionnaire was administered to pregnant women attending antenatal clinics in the Offinso North district. Results: Age of respondents ranged from 15-49 years among which 25 (6.5%) took herbal medicines through varying routes of administration. High usage was found amongst those married and also with no formal and basic education and a median age of 25 years. Awareness of orthodox health practitioners about these herbal medicines was scanty. Conclusions: The study emphasized the use of herbal medicines particularly through some unconventional mode of preparations by pregnant women in Offinso North. Orthodox practitioners' awareness of their usage was found to be inadequate, highlighting an urgent need for health care practitioners and other health care givers to be aware of this practice and make efforts in obtaining information about herb use during ante-natal care. Lassa fever is a zoonotic disease endemic in West Africa but with no previous case reported in Ghana. We describe the first two laboratory confirmed cases of Lassa fever from the Ashanti Region of Ghana detected in October and December, 2011. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although insights on bride price and domestic violence have been explored in Ghana, very little is known about payment of bride price and the justification of sexual violence. We investigated the payment of bride price and justification of sexual violence among women ( N = 4,222) in Ghana, dwelling on the 2014 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey. Two binary logistic regression models were fitted. We adjusted for significant sociodemographic variables. The findings revealed that women whose partners had paid their bride price had higher odds [ OR = 1.54; CI = 1.174, 2.00] of justifying sexual violence, compared to those whose partners had not paid. We found that women with primary [AOR = 0.55; CI = 0.44-0.71] and secondary/higher [AOR = 0.47; CI = 0.36-0.60] levels of education had lower odds of accepting sexual violence. Women in the rich wealth quintile [AOR = 0.32; CI = 0.22, 0.46] had lower odds of justifying sexual violence. Our study has illustrated the need for women to appreciate that payment of bride price does not imply that their fundamental human rights have been bought by men, but they rather become partners. This information can form part of premarriage counselling and human rights initiatives by the Ministry of Gender and Social Protection. That is, the content of marriage counselling may be expanded to include issues on IPV, its implications, and legal consequences. Such information can develop personal realization and urge women to report any violent advances to the police and appropriate authorities for the required legal action to be taken. This may deter others to desist from violence perpetration against women. At the community level, chiefs and other leaders of high repute can be made anti-IPV ambassadors. The Ministry of Health and other nongovernmental anti-violence organizations can also collaborate to strengthen education on anti-sexual violence programs by using the mass media.

Natural killer (NK) cells show some features of adaptive immunity but have not been studied at the clonal level. Here, we used retrogenic color-barcoding and single-cell adoptive transfers to track clonal immune responses to murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) infection, derived from individual NK cells expressing activating receptor Ly49H. Clonal expansion of single NK cells varied substantially, and this variation could not be attributed to the additional presence or absence of inhibitory Ly49 receptors. Instead, single-cell-derived variability correlated with distinct surface expression levels of Ly49H itself. Ly49H hi NK cell clones maintained higher Ly49H expression and expanded more than their Ly49H lo counterparts in response to MCMV. Thus, akin to adaptive processes shaping an antigen-specific T cell receptor (TCR) repertoire, the Ly49H + NK cell population adapts to MCMV infection. This process relies on the clonal maintenance of distinct Ly49H expression levels, generating a repertoire of individual NK cells outfitted with distinct reactivity to MCMV., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. Focus group discussions, key informant interviews and structured community interviews were used to describe the perceptions of caretakers of pre-school children in a predominantly rural district in Ghana. Over 75% considered ARI important in the community and there are a variety of local terms of describe various ARI illness entities. The perception of signs of severe ARI in children above two months of age was reasonably high; over 88% could mention at least one of two cardinal signs for severe ARI (difficulty in breathing, rapid breathing). The same cannot be said of their perception of signs for children less than two months of age. There was also a favourable perception of cause; a few misconceptions were however identified. There was no significant difference in perception between locality, age groups and educational levels. A high correlation between perception of cause and prevention of ARI was found. Health education programmes should re-enforce positive perceptions and address misconceptions. The difference in presentation of signs of severe ARI between older children and younger ones should also be stressed.

Caretakers of pre-school children were interviewed in Afigya Sekyere district, Ghana. Over 46% (n = 400) will buy drugs and 33% will use various herbs for mild ARI at home. Food is withheld during ARI episodes and few will attempt to treat perceived severe ARI at home. No association was found between knowledge of signs or causation of ARI and intended practice for mild and severe ARI. Finance and poor attitude of health workers were major concerns expressed by caretakers in seeking help from the orthodox health system.
