Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated condition of the central nervous system (CNS). Intake of fruits and vegetables high in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and active molecules contributes to the body's overall health, immunity, and physiological function. This study sought to review the literature and investigate the relationship between fruits and vegetables consumption and MS odds. In the current systematic review and meta-analysis, a systematic search of original databases from inception to 21 Dec 2022 was conducted based on the PRISMA 2020 statement. Human observational studies examining the association between fruits or vegetables consumption and MS prevalence were included if they reported and provided effect size with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The systematic review and meta-analysis included eight studies. Random effect model showed the protective effect of fruits (I2 = 81.0%, P for heterogeneity < 0.001; pooled OR = 0.52, 95%CI = 0.27, 0.97, P-value = 0.042) and vegetables consumption (I2 = 73.5%, P for heterogeneity = 0.002; pooled OR = 0.61, 95%CI = 0.38, 1.00, P-value = 0.050) on MS odds. According to a linear dose–response meta-analysis of four case–control studies, an increase of 100 grams of fruits per day reduced the odds of MS by 9% (I2 = 0.0%, P for heterogeneity = 0.77; pooled OR = 0.91, 95%CI = 0.83, 0.99, P-value = 0.021). Consumption of fruits and vegetables may be associated with a potential protective effect against MS. Methods: Retrospective analysis of electronic medical records from three hospitals. We enrolled patients with a clinical diagnosis of angioid streaks choroidal neovascularization that had a minimum follow-up of 12 months. From each record, we extracted general demographic data, best corrected visual acuity (baseline, before and after each disease recurrence and last on file), type of treatment, time between last intravitreal injection and disease recurrence, and classification of the neovascular lesion morphology by optical coherence tomography, and optical coherence tomography angiography. Patients with myopic choroidal neovascularization were used as controls. Interobserver agreement was assessed with a Cohen-Kappa test. The Odds ratio was calculated with a chi2 test for significance. Visual acuity change through time was evaluated with an ANOVA for repeated measurements with an alpha value of 0.05 for statistical significance. Results: We enrolled 30 patients in the study group and 14 in the control group. In the study group, the baseline and final BCVA were 0.861 ± 0.59 and 1.095 ± 0.61 logMAR (p = 0.1) respectively. Control group: 1.045 ± 0.57 and 0.617 ± 0.53 logMAR (p < 0.05). In the study group, the predominant CNV type by OCTA was mixed (37%), and interlacing (57%) in the control group. Mixed and cog-wheel patterns at baseline had increased Odds for recurrence in the study group (p = 0.09). Patients in the study group required more intravitreal injections on each recurrence episode to achieve disease control (3.5 ± 1.5 vs.1.4 ± 0.2, p < 0.01). Conclusions: The benefits of anti-VEGF treatment are lost over time in patients with angioid streaks and CNV. Lesion characteristics by optical coherence tomography angiography could help physicians predict the risk of recurrence. Trial registration: Retrospective registered, and IRB approved. To improve nonparametric estimates of lifetime distributions, we propose using the increasing odds rate (IOR) model as an alternative to other popular, but more restrictive, 'adverse ageing' models, such as the increasing hazard rate one. This extends the scope of applicability of some methods for statistical inference under order restrictions, since the IOR model is compatible with heavy-tailed and bathtub distributions. We study a strongly uniformly consistent estimator of the cumulative distribution function of interest under the IOR constraint. Numerical evidence shows that this estimator often outperforms the classic empirical distribution function when the underlying model does belong to the IOR family. We also study two different tests to detect deviations from the IOR property and establish their consistency. The performance of these tests is also evaluated through simulations. Introducción: el Odds Ratio es una medida de efecto para la cual existen diversas traducciones al español. En este documento lo denominaremos OR (Razón de Odds). Es una medida que a través de la historia ha contribuido a establecer asociaciones relevantes para la salud pública. Objetivo: realizar una nota epidemiológica donde se presentan los principales aspectos teórico práctico de la razón de Odds. Metodología: búsquedas en las bases de datos biomédica (Pubmed, Cochrane Library, LILACS), metabuscadores (Google) y a través de la estrategia en bola de nieve y referencias claves. Esta nota metodológica contiene introducción, escenario clínico, desarrollo de concepto, ejemplos, discusión y conclusiones. Resultados: un odds es el cociente entre la probabilidad de ocurrencia de un evento (p) sobre la probabilidad de que dicho evento no ocurra (1-p). El OR o razón de odds, es un cociente entre dos Odds. Es una medida del efecto que permite a los investigadores plantear posibles asociaciones entre una exposición y un desenlace. Conclusiones: el OR puede determinarse en diferentes tipos de diseños y por medio del análisis estratificado (método Mantel-Haenszel) y el multivariado utilizando regresión logística, controla variables de confusión.

The San Joaquin Valley (SJV) of California has been consistently identified as having one of the highest levels of air pollution in the US. Despite federal and state standards, the SJV has been in non-attainment status for daily PM _2.5 concentrations, extreme non-attainment for 8 hr O _3 levels, and attainment for NO _2 . An epidemiological time-stratified case-crossover design was used to estimate the relationship between exposure to NO _2 , O _3 , PM _2.5 and adverse health outcomes in asthma and upper respiratory infections (URIs). This study compared pollutant exposure effects for each case during limited time intervals and adjusted for seasonality. Elevated concentrations of three criteria outdoor air pollutants are associated with increased asthma and URI-related ED visits and hospitalizations in the SJV for all ages. NO _2 exposure increased the odds of having an ED visit by 2.4% in lag 1 (95% CI: 1.017, 1.031). Lags 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, and 14 were statistically significant. O _3 modestly increased the odds of ED visits by 0.3% (95% CI:1.000, 1.006) after immediate exposure in the warm season. In the cold season, PM _2.5 estimates were significant for all lags except for lags 4 and 12. The two-week lag increased the odds by 28% (95% CI:1.218, 1.345) for ED visits, and 16.5% (95% CI:1.009, 1.345) increased the odds of being hospitalized after cumulative exposure to PM _2.5 . Findings suggest that SJV residents experience adverse health effects due to elevated exposure to NO _2 despite attainment of federal and state pollutant standards. This study provides new evidence about the effects of three criteria air pollutants and adverse health outcomes in the SJV region. The air quality regulatory and public health governing bodies should consider revisions to regional pollutant thresholds and local public health strategies to prevent adverse health outcomes during short and prolonged periods of air pollution exposure.

Background/Objectives: Little is known about acne incidence in preadolescents and its potential association with body mass index (BMI). Our study aims to determine acne incidence in preadolescents and its association with BMI. Methods: A population-based retrospective cohort study identified 7- to ≤12 yearolds with an initial acne diagnosis during 2010–2018, and incidence was calculated. Two age- and sex-matched controls without acne were randomly selected per case, and BMI was recorded. Results: A total of 643 acne patients were identified. Annual age- and sex-adjusted incidence rate was 58.0 per 10,000 person-years, higher in females vs. males (89.2 vs. 28.2 per 10,000 person-years, p < .001), and increased with age (4.3, 24.4, and 144.3 per 10,000 person-years among 7–8, 9–10, and 11–12 year-olds, respectively, p < .001). Systemic medication use was associated with increasing BMI (odds ratio = 1.43 per 5 kg/m² increase in BMI, 95% CI 1.07–1.92, p = .015). Median BMI percentile was higher among acne cases vs. controls (75.0 vs. 65.0, p < .001), as was the proportion with BMI ≥95th percentile (16.7% vs. 12.2%, p = .01). Conclusion: Acne incidence is higher in preadolescent girls than boys and increases with age. Preadolescents with acne are more likely to be obese than those without acne. Gambling, as an uncertain business involving risks confronting casinos, is commonly analysed using the risk of ruin (ROR) formula. However, due to its brevity, the ROR does not provide any implication of nuances in terms of the distribution of wins/losses, thus causing the potential failure of unravelling exceptional and extreme cases. This paper discusses the mathematical model of ROR using Poisson distribution theory with the consideration of house advantage (a) and the law of large numbers in order to compensate for the insufficiency mentioned above. In this discussion, we explore the relationship between cash flow and max bet limits in the model and examine how these factors interact in influencing the risk of casino bankruptcy. In their business nature, casinos operate gambling businesses and capitalize on the house advantage favouring them. The house advantage of the games signifies casinos' profitability, and in addition, the uncertainty inevitably poses a certain risk of bankruptcy to them even though the house advantage favours them. In this paper, the house advantage is incorporated into our model for a few popular casino games. Furthermore, a set of full-range scales is defined to facilitate effective judgment on the levels of risk confronted by casinos in certain settings. Abstract Background Caesarean section rates are rising globally. No specific caesarian section rate at either country-level or hospital-level was recommended. In Palestinian government hospitals, nearly one-fourth of all births were caesarean sections, ranging from 14.5 to 35.6%. Our aim was to assess whether variation in odds for intrapartum caesarean section in six Palestinian government hospitals can be explained by differences in indications. Methods Data on maternal and fetal health were collected prospectively for all women scheduled for vaginal delivery during the period from 1st March 2015 to 30th November 2016 in six government hospitals in Palestine. Comparisons of proportions in sociodemographic, antenatal obstetric characteristics and indications by the hospital were tested by χ2 test and differences in means by one-way ANOVA analysis. The odds for intrapartum caesarean section were estimated by logistic regression. The amount of explained variance was estimated by Nagelkerke R square. Results Out of 51,041 women, 4724 (9.3%) underwent intrapartum caesarean section. The prevalence of intrapartum caesarean section varied across hospitals; from 7.6 to 22.1% in nulliparous, and from 5.8 to 14.1% among parous women. The most common indications were fetal distress and failure to progress in nulliparous, and previous caesarean section with an additional obstetric indication among parous women. Adjusted ORs for intrapartum caesarean section among nulliparous women ranged from 0.42 (95% CI 0.31 to 0.57) to 2.41 (95% CI 1.70 to 3.40) compared to the reference hospital, and from 0.50 (95% CI 0.40–0.63) to 2.07 (95% CI 1.61 to 2.67) among parous women. Indications explained 58 and 66% of the variation in intrapartum caesarean section among nulliparous and parous women, respectively. Conclusion The differences in odds for intrapartum caesarean section among hospitals could not be fully explained by differences in indications. Further investigations on provider related factors as well as maternal and fetal outcomes in different hospitals are necessary.

This paper examines the items of two scales, the Random Events Knowledge Test (REKT) and the Chance Test, and examines their relationship with problem gambling (N = 1375). Using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, the REKT was broken down into four sub-scales: Due to Win, Counterintuitive Nature of random chance, Odds Do Not Improve, and Biases and Wins. The Chance Test was broken down into three sub-scales: abstract Odds, Table Odds, and Chance Odds. These sub-scales were regressed onto of problem gambling severity and revealed that more knowledge about random chance on all sub-scales of the REKT and Abstract Odds from the Chance Test were negatively related to problem gambling. On the other hand, we found that higher score on the Table Odds and Chance Odds from the Chance Test were positively related to problem gambling. The results illustrate that compared to people who do not have a gambling problem, problem gamblers have a more accurate understanding of some aspects of the chances of winning specific games, but have a poorer understanding of various implications of the independence of random events. This study proposes a polynomial columns-parameter symmetry model for square contingency tables with the same row and column ordinal classifications. In the proposed model, the odds for all i < j that an observation will fall in row category i and column category j instead of row category j and column category i depend on only the value of column category j . The proposed model is original because many asymmetry models in square contingency tables depend on the both values of row and column category. The proposed model constantly holds when the columns-parameter symmetry model holds; but the converse does not necessarily hold. This study shows that it is necessary to satisfy the polynomial columns-marginal symmetry model, in addition to the columns-parameter symmetry model, to satisfy the proposed model. This decomposition theorem is useful for explaining why the proposed model does not hold. Moreover, this study shows the value of likelihood ratio chi-square statistic for testing the proposed model is equal to the sum of that for testing the decomposed two models.

Objective Information about prognostic outcomes can be of great help for people with prediabetes and for physicians in the face of scientific controversy about the cutoff point for defining prediabetes. We aimed to estimate different prognostic outcomes in people with prediabetes. Design Prospective cohort of subjects with prediabetes according to American Diabetes Association guidelines. Main Outcome measures The probabilities of diabetes onset versus non-onset, the odds against diabetes onset, and the probability of reverting to normoglycemia according to different prediabetes categories were calculated. Results The odds against diabetes onset ranged from 29:1 in individuals with isolated FPG of 100–109 mg/dL to 1:1 in individuals with FPG 110–125 mg/dL plus HbA1c 6.0–6.4%. The probability of reversion to normoglycemia was 31.2% (95% CI 24.0–39.6) in those with isolated FPG 100–109 mg/dL and 6.2% (95% CI 1.4–10.0) in those with FPG 110–125 mg/dL plus HbA1c 6.0–6.4%. Of every 100 participants in the first group, 97 did not develop diabetes and 31 reverted to normoglycemia, while in the second group those figures were 52 and 6. Conclusions Using odds of probabilities and absolute numbers might be useful for people with prediabetes and physicians to share decisions on potential interventions.Key points Communicating knowledge on the course of the disease to make clinical decisions is not always done appropriately. Health researchers conduct survey among the citizens to capture their opinion on COVID-19. In such surveys like in Hanafiah and Wan (2020), structural-zero (different from sampling zero) category occurs as they question about perception, knowledge, and communication regarding COVID-19.Materials: The data were collected in a survey conducted among Malaysians by Hanafiah and Wan regarding COVID-19. The survey focused on people’s response about the public communication, knowledge, and perception.Methods: One of the four question categories in the survey is mutually exclusive with the other three questions. Consequently, there will be no entry in that category. Such group is called structurally zero category in the literature. The literature never probed the migrative split to other categories of the unknown proportion belonging to the structural zero category. In this article, the probability-based new and innovative method configures what proportion in that mutually exclusive category and it is the essence of our method.Results: The mutually exclusive nature of subquestions manufactured structural zero in their data. A careful analysis of the data has created so far unknown probability concepts in the literature, which we named as “Exodus probabilities” in this article. Its discovery and utility are illustrated and elaborated with application in COVID-19. This methodology is also useful in applications in engineering, epidemiology, marketing, communication networking, etc.Conclusion: What is quite novel about the discovery of the exodus probability in this article is the evolution of the concepts from the structural-zero category. In such situation, when a category is eliminated, the proportions of the sample might have uncommunicatively transited to other viable categories and our research question is all about configuring their proportions. Academic institutions are seeking to attract the most capable and prospective students. Many research studies seek to identify factors determining a successful transition from secondary to tertiary education. One of the important issues is the predictive value of national testing/Matura examination results in relation to higher education institutions admission. The aim of our study is to quantify the odds to study at university and the results of centralised student assessments (the 10th grade and Matura) of mathematics and the Lithuanian language and literature for the period of five years (Matura examinations for the period 2014–2018), taking into account the student's gender, the location of the school attended, social support, and special needs indicators. We estimate that the Matura grade in mathematics is almost double more important when compared to the10th grade test results for odds of studying at higher education institutions. Grades of the Lithuanian language and literature obtained to be twice more import for males than females. From 2023 or 2024, we may observe the downward trend of people with tertiary educational attainment in Lithuania.

A radix-10 multiplication is the foremost frequent operations employed by several monetary business and user-oriented applications, decimal multiplier using in state of art digital systems are significantly good but can be upgraded with time delay and area optimization. This work is proposed a more area and time delay optimized new design of overloaded decimal digit set (ODDS) architecture-based radix-10 multiplier for signed numbers. Binary coded decimal (BCD) to binary followed by binary multiplication and finally binary to BCD conversion are 3 major modules employed in radix-10 multiplication. This paperwork presents a replacement technique for binary coded decimal (BCD) to binary and vice-versa convertors in radix-10 multiplication. A novel addition tree structure called as partial shifter adder (PSA) tree-based approach has been developed for BCD to binary conversion, and it is used to add partially generated products. To meet our major concern i.e. speed, we need particular high-speed multiplication, hence the proposed PSA based radix-10 multiplier is using vertical cross binary multiplication and concurrent shifter-based addition method. The design has been tested on 45nm technology-based Zynq-7 field programmable gate array (FPGA) devices with a 6-input lookup table (LUTs). A combinational implementation maps quite well into the slice structure of the Xilinx Zynq-7 families field programmable gate array.
