1. IMPROVEMENT OF CHAINSAW SOUNDS IDENTIFICATION IN THE FOREST ENVIRONMENT USING MAXIMUM RATIO COMBINING AND CLASSIFICATION ALGORITHME.

Abstract

To better combat the devastation of the protected forests in Côte d'Ivoire, a study was conducted to create a technique for detecting the acoustic signals produced by chainsaws deployed to fell trees in these areas. To improve the recognition rate of chainsaw sounds in a forest environment and increase the detection range of the recognition system, we are implementing the maximum ratio combining (MRC) technique on a microphone array. Therefore, the employment of an identification system is compared using one (01) microphone against the outcomes obtained by adopting system with three (03), six (06), and twelve (12) microphones. The use of MRC is then contrasted with an alternative recombining approach, designated as simple summation (SS). The SS is characterised by the simple addition of the signals acquired by the microphone array in the frequency domain. The MRC was employed on various microphone arrangements, accounting for varying degrees of attenuation experienced by chainsaw sounds. The K-Nearest Neighbors, in combination with Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC), was employed to detect chainsaw sounds within the 16 kHz central frequency octave band. MRC applied to microphone arrays provided superior outcomes than simple summation. The enhancement in terms of classification rate ranged from [18; 51], favouring MRC. Moreover, it extended the chainsaw detection range from 520 m (using one microphone) to 1210 m (using a 12-microphone array). Taking into account the criteria for selecting an optimum microphone array, including classification rate, number of microphone nodes, information processing time and detection range, the six-microphone array was chosen as the best configuration. Abstract

Noise measurement is essential for industrial usage. However, further attention to preventing noise pollution is needed, especially when working with equipment generating a high noise level, such as gas turbines. This study aims to determine the best way to perform noise measurement and analyze the octave band frequency generated by noise pollution caused by gas turbine equipment. Data from site measurements show that the gas turbines produce more than 85 dB of noise with a Z-weighted measurement. A noise measuring investigation was conducted to obtain the data for the 1/3 octave band. A frequency-domain was used to comprehend the properties of the noise measurement frequency band. The frequency band was classified into three different zones called low, medium, and high frequency, which is useful in noise measurement analysis to identify a viable solution to reduce the noise. Onsite sampling was performed at the source, path, and receiver of three separate gas turbine locations within oil and gas operations. The 1/3 octave band data collection results at the sound source, path, and receiver demonstrate the noise level distribution at the perimeter of gas turbine installations in the low and medium frequency ranges. Most of the high noise frequency range is between 250 Hz and 2 kHz for source, path, and receiver. All acquired values are compared to the Department of Safety and Health (Occupational Safety and Health (Noise Exposure) Regulations 2019 in Malaysia. 8. Octave Bandwidth High-Performance Microstrip-to-Double-Ridge-Waveguide Transition.

Abstract

This letter presents a microstrip-to-double-ridge-waveguide transition with high performance in the octave bandwidth operation between 6 and 12 GHz. The structure is based on a three-chamfered-step transformer supported directly over the microstrip line without soldering. The electric contact is ensured by the pressure between the first step of the transformer and a groove in the microstrip line. The transition is formed by two halves, minimizing the manufacturing complexity and the loss contact. A sequential procedure has been followed in the design process. Initially, a port directly feeding the planar structure has been considered, obtaining a simulated return loss level better than 25 dB in the whole operation band. Afterward, feeding through an SubMiniature version A (SMA) coaxial connector, a simulated return loss level better than 20 dB has been obtained. In order to verify the above theoretical simulations, a back-to-back arrangement has been measured, connecting two similar transitions. The prototype shows an insertion loss for a single transition lower than 0.8 dB in the 67% fractional bandwidth from 6 to 12 GHz. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bakgrund: Finjusteringar av hörapparatens förstärkning görs för att validera förstärkningen. Patientens förmåga att kategorisera ljudbilden ligger till grund för de justeringar som görs. Syfte: Att utvärdera en praktiknära metod för finjustering av hörapparater. Metod: Deltagarna (N = 18) fick lyssna på och bedöma ljudbilden för ett talmaterial med slumpade nivåmodifieringar i oktavbandet 4 kHz. Försöksledaren korrigerade ljudbilden utifrån deltagarnas nivåbedömning, till dess att deltagarna upplevde att ljudbilden var naturlig. Deltagarna fick efter halva undersökningen, som intervention, lyssna på en genomgång som förklarade och jämförde de olika ljudbilderna. Resultat: Deltagarnas nivåbedömningar ledde till korrigeringar i oktavbandet som var statistiskt signifikanta, men en normalisering av oktavbandet uppnåddes inte. Efter genomgången kunde fler nivåmodifikationer korrigeras med en statistiskt signifikant skillnad. The patient's ability to describe the sound quality lays as a foundation for the fine-tuning. Aim: To evaluate a practice-oriented method for fine-tuning hearing aids. Methods: The participants (N = 18) listened to and evaluated the sound quality for a speech-material with randomized level modifications in the octave band 4 kHz. The sound quality was adjusted according to the participants' evaluation, until a normalized sound quality was perceived by the participants. Halfway through the examination the participants, as an intervention, listened to a briefing which explained and compared differences in the different sound qualities. Results: The participants level evaluation led to adjustment in the octave band that was statistically significant, but a normalization of the octave band could not be achieved. After the briefing a larger number of level modifications were adjusted with a statistical significance. Level modifications which were categorized as metallic/sharp more often led to a statistically significant adjustment compared to level modifications categorized as unclear/dull. Conclusions: If fine-tuning of hearing aids is done, the audiologist should be aware that bigger level adjustment in broad bands might be needed, for the patient to be able to notice a difference in sound quality in a clinical setting.

Abstract

Journal and thrust bearings utilise hydrodynamic lubrication to reduce friction and wear between the shaft and the bearing. The process to determine the lubricant film thickness or the actual applied load is vital to ensure proper and trouble-free operation. However, taking accurate measurements of the oil film thickness or load in bearings of operating engines is very difficult and requires specialised equipment and extensive experience. In the present work, the performance parameters of journal bearings of the same principal dimensions are measured experimentally, aiming at training a Machine Learning (ML) algorithm capable of predicting the loading condition of any similar bearing. To this end, an experimental procedure using the Bently Nevada Rotor Kit 4 is set up, combined with sound and vibration measurements in the vicinity of the journal bearing structure. First, sound and acceleration measurements for different values of bearing load and rotational speed are collected and post-processed utilising 1/3 octave band analysis techniques, for parametrisation of the input datasets of the ML algorithms. Next, several ML algorithms are trained and tested. Comparison of the results produced by each algorithm determines the fittest one for each application. The results of this work demonstrate that, in a laboratory environment, the operational parameters of journal bearings can be efficiently identified utilising non-intrusive sound and vibration measurements. The presented approach may substantially improve bearing condition identification and monitoring, which is an imperative step to prevent journal bearing failures and conduct condition-based maintenance.

Abstract

Noise and vibration due to dropping hard heavy weights is a common source of disturbance and complaint in residential, commercial, and mixed-use building types. The authors and others have worked on developing methodologies to accurately, repeatably, and conveniently measure heavy-hard impact noise and vibration in the field based on a standard weight drop. Separately, systems have been created to measure the force being injected into a building from heavy-hard impact. It has been shown that this force data can be used to successfully predict vibration levels in buildings if in-situ transfer functions are known. In this paper, the authors will present a novel one-third-octave band prediction method using the laboratory force data and a reference impact sheet to predict field performance without the need to measure transfer function. The method is evaluated using both noise and vibration measurements.

Abstract

The noise reduction analysis are studied for different models such as noise reduction for two rooms separated by a brick wall containing single and companied pane of glass, non-distorting wall and infinite flexible wall. The transmitted sound through infinite partition depends on the relative speed and free flexural wave in partition and the incident Plane wave. This paper presents acoustical noise reduction analysis for the transmission of noise through partitions. The models investigates the reduction in sound pressure level required in two rooms separated by a brick wall containing a single pane of glass and a compound pane of glass also study the noise transmitted and reflected at normal incident through a non-distorting wall simulated as spring and damper mass system and study the analysis of noise transmission through infinite flexible wall and discuss the merits of the various methods that could be used to achieve the reduction. The analytic model and the analysis in the present work give some insight to the behavior of the structures under noise problem showing the different parameters that related with the transmission of noise, such as power transmitted through the panel, power incident through the panel sound reduction index (transmission loss), octave band center frequency, sound power level, reverberation time, deformation, propagation and non-propagation of noise. Abstract

Noise exposure has traditionally been considered the primary risk factor for hearing loss. However, ototoxicants commonly found in occupational settings could affect hearing loss independently, additively, or synergistically when combined with noise exposures. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the combined effect of metal and solvent ototoxicants, continuous noise, and impulse noise on hearing loss. Noise and ototoxicant exposure and pure-tone audiometry results were analyzed for U.S. Air Force personnel (n = 2,372) at a depot-level aircraft maintenance activity at Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma. Eight similar exposure groups based on combinations of ototoxicant and noise exposure were created including: (1) Continuous noise (reference group); (2) Continuous noise + Impulse noise; (3) Metal exposures + Continuous noise; (4) Metal exposures + Continuous noise + Impulse noise; (5) Solvent exposure + Continuous noise; (6) Solvent exposures + Continuous noise + Impulse noise; (7) Metal exposure + Solvent exposures + Continuous noise; and (8) Metal exposure + Solvent exposures + Continuous noise + Impulse noise. Hearing loss was assessed at center octave band frequencies of 500-6,000 Hz and using National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Standard Threshold Shift (STS) criteria. Hearing changes were significantly worse at 2,000 Hz in the Metal exposure + Solvent exposure + Continuous noise group compared to the Continuous noise only reference group (p = 0.023). The Metal exposure + Solvent exposure + Continuous noise group had a significantly greater relative risk (RR) of 2.44; 95% CI [1.24, 4.83] for developing an STS at 2,000 Hz. While not statistically significant, the Solvent exposure + Continuous noise group had a RR of 2.32; 95%CI [1.00, 5.34] for developing an STS at 1,000 Hz. These results indicate that noise exposure may dominate hearing loss at ≥3,000 Hz while combined effects of concomitant exposure to ototoxic substances and noise are only noticeable at ≤2,000 Hz. These results also suggest combined exposures to ototoxicants and noise presents a greater hearing loss risk than just noise.
