Observations towards L1630 in the Orion B molecular cloud, comprising the iconic Horsehead Nebula, allow us to study the interplay between stellar radiation and a molecular cloud under relatively benign conditions, that is, intermediate densities and an intermediate UV radiation field. Contrary to the well-studied Orion Molecular Cloud 1 (OMC1), which hosts much harsher conditions, L1630 has little star formation. We aim to relate the [CII] fine-structure line emission to the physical conditions predominant in L1630 and compare it to studies of OMC1. The [CII] $158\,\mu\mathrm{m}$ emission from an area of $12' \times 17'$ in L1630 was observed using the upGREAT instrument onboard SOFIA. Of the [CII] emission from the mapped area 95%, $13\,L_{\odot}$, originates from the molecular cloud; the adjacent HII region contributes only 5%, that is, $1\,L_{\odot}$. From comparison with other data (CO (1-0)-line emission, far-infrared (FIR) continuum studies, emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)), we infer a gas density of the molecular cloud of $n_{\mathrm{H}}\sim 3\cdot 10^3\,\mathrm{cm^{-3}}$, with surface layers, including the Horsehead Nebula, having a density of up to $n_{\mathrm{H}}\sim 4\cdot 10^4\,\mathrm{cm^{-3}}$. The temperature of the surface gas is $T\sim 100\,\mathrm{K}$. The average [CII] cooling efficiency within the molecular cloud is $1.3\cdot 10^{-2}$. The fraction of the mass of the molecular cloud within the studied area that is traced by [CII] is only $8\%$. Our PDR models are able to reproduce the FIR-[CII] correlations and also the CO (1-0)-[CII] correlations. Finally, we compare our results on the heating efficiency of the gas with theoretical studies of photoelectric heating by PAHs, clusters of PAHs, and very small grains, and find the heating efficiency to be lower than theoretically predicted, a continuation of the trend set by other observations., Comment: 23 pages, 30 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

During its 2012 decline the R Coronae Borealis star (RCB) V854 Cen was spectroscopically monitored with X-shooter on the ESO Very Large Telescope. The obscured optical and near-infrared spectrum exhibits many narrow and several broad emission features, as previously observed. The envelope is spatially resolved along the slit and allows for a detailed study of the circumstellar material. In this Letter we report on the properties of a number of unidentified emission features (UFs), including the detection of a new one at 8692 {\AA}. These UFs have been observed in the Red Rectangle, but their chemical and physical nature is still a mystery. The previously known UFs behave similarly in the Red Rectangle and V854 Cen, but are not detected in six other observed RCBs. Possibly the presence of some hydrogen is required for the formation of their carrier(s). The $\lambda 8692$ UF is present in all RCBs. Massive stars are key players in the evolution of galaxies, yet their formation pathway remains unclear. In this work, we use data from several galaxy-wide surveys to build an unbiased dataset of ~700 massive young stellar objects (MYSOs), ~200 giant molecular clouds (GMCs), and ~100 young (<10 Myr) optical stellar clusters (SCs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We employ this data to quantitatively study the location and clustering of massive star formation and its relation to the internal structure of GMCs. We reveal that massive stars do not typically form at the highest column densities nor centers of their parent GMCs at the ~6 pc resolution of our observations. Massive star formation clusters over multiple generations and on size scales much smaller than the size of the parent GMC. We find that massive star formation is significantly boosted in clouds near SCs. Yet, whether a cloud is associated with a SC does not depend on either the cloud's mass or global surface density. These results reveal a connection between different generations of massive stars on timescales up to 10 Myr. We compare our work with Galactic studies and discuss our findings in terms of GMC collapse, triggered star formation, and a potential dichotomy between low- and high-mass star formation., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, in press

The Orion-Eridanus superbubble is the prototypical superbubble due to its proximity and evolutionary state. Here, we provide a synthesis of recent observational data from WISE and Planck with archival data, allowing to draw a new and more complete picture on the history and evolution of the Orion-Eridanus region. We discuss the general morphological structures and observational characteristics of the superbubble, and derive quantitative properties of the gas- and dust inside Barnard's Loop. We reveal that Barnard's Loop is a complete bubble structure which, together with the lambda Ori region and other smaller-scale bubbles, expands within the Orion-Eridanus superbubble. We argue that the Orion-Eridanus superbubble is larger and more complex than previously thought, and that it can be viewed as a series of nested shells, superimposed along the line of sight. During the lifetime of the superbubble, HII region champagne flows and thermal evaporation of embedded clouds continuously mass-load the superbubble interior, while winds or supernovae from the Orion OB association rejuvenate the superbubble by sweeping up the material from the interior cavities in an episodic fashion, possibly triggering the formation of new stars that form shells of their own. The steady supply of material into the superbubble cavity implies that dust processing from interior supernova remnants is more efficient than previously thought. The cycle of mass-loading, interior cleansing, and star formation repeats until the molecular reservoir is depleted or the clouds have been disrupted. Recent studies of dust in the interstellar medium have challenged the capabilities and validity of current dust models, indicating that the properties of dust evolve as it transits between different phases of the interstellar medium. We conduct a multi-wavelength study of the dust emission from the ionized gas of the IC 434 emission nebula, and combine this with modeling, from large scales that provide insight into the history of the IC 434/L1630 region, to small scales that allow us to infer quantitative properties of the dust content inside the H II region. The dust enters the H II region through momentum transfer with a champagne flow of ionized gas, set up by a chance encounter between the L1630 molecular cloud and the star cluster of $\sigma$ Ori. We observe two clearly separated dust populations inside the ionized gas, that show different observational properties, as well as contrasting optical properties. Population A is colder ($\sim$ 25 K) than predicted by widely-used dust models, its temperature is insensitive to an increase of the impinging radiation field, is momentum-coupled to the gas, and efficiently absorbs radiation pressure to form a dust wave at 1.0 pc ahead of $\sigma$ Ori AB. Population B is characterized by a constant [20/30] flux ratio throughout the HII region, heats up to $\sim$ 75 K close to the star, and is less efficient in absorbing radiation pressure, forming a dust wave at 0.1 pc from the star. We conclude that the dust inside IC 434 is bimodal. The characteristics of population A are remarkable and can not be explained by current dust models. Population B are grains that match the classical description of spherical, compact dust. The freezeout of gas-phase species onto cold dust grains can drastically alter the chemistry and the heating-cooling balance of protostellar material. In contrast to well-known species such as carbon monoxide (CO), the freezeout of various carriers of elements with abundances $<10^{-5}$ has not yet been well studied. Our aim here is to study the depletion of chlorine in the protostellar core, OMC-2 FIR 4. We observed transitions of HCl and H2Cl+ towards OMC-2 FIR 4 using the Herschel Space Observatory and Caltech Submillimeter Observatory facilities. Our analysis makes use of state of the art chlorine gas-grain chemical models and newly calculated HCl-H$_{2}$ hyperfine collisional excitation rate coefficients. A narrow emission component in the HCl lines traces the extended envelope, and a broad one traces a more compact central region. The gas-phase HCl abundance in FIR 4 is 9e-11, a factor of only 0.001 that of volatile elemental chlorine. The H2Cl+ lines are detected in absorption and trace a tenuous foreground cloud, where we find no depletion of volatile chlorine. Gas-phase HCl is the tip of the chlorine iceberg in protostellar cores. Using a gas-grain chemical model, we show that the hydrogenation of atomic chlorine on grain surfaces in the dark cloud stage sequesters at least 90% of the volatile chlorine into HCl ice, where it remains in the protostellar stage. About 10% of chlorine is in gaseous atomic form. Gas-phase HCl is a minor, but diagnostically key reservoir, with an abundance of <1e-10 in most of the protostellar core. We find the 35Cl/37Cl ratio in OMC-2 FIR 4 to be 3.2\pm0.1, consistent with the solar system value., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

This paper presents a spectral survey of diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) in the NIR range, from 0.9 to 2.5 micron. The observations were designed to detect new DIBs, confirm previously proposed NIR DIBs, and characterise their behaviour with respect to known line-of-sight properties (including the optical DIBs present in our spectra). X-shooter at the VLT was used to obtained medium-resolution spectra of eight known DIB targets and one telluric reference star. In addition to the known 9577, 9632, 10780, 11797, and 13175 Angstroms NIR DIBs, we confirm 9 out of the 13 NIR DIBs that were presented by Geballe and co-workers in 2011. Furthermore, we report 12 new NIR DIB candidates. The strengths of the strongest NIR DIBs show a general correlation with reddening, E(B-V), but with a large scatter. Several NIR DIBs are more strongly correlated with the 5780 Angstroms DIB strength than with E(B-V); this is especially the case for the 15268 Angstroms DIB. The NIR DIBs are strong: the summed equivalent widths of the five strongest NIR DIBs represent a few percent of the total equivalent width of the entire average DIB spectrum (per unit reddening). The NIR DIBs towards the translucent cloud HD 147889 are all weak with respect to the general trend. No direct match was found between observed NIR DIBs and laboratory matrix-isolation spectroscopic data of PAHs. The strong correlation between the 5780-15268 DIB pair implies that (Nf)_5780 / (Nf)_15268 = 14. However, the reduced strength of the 15268 Angstroms DIB in HD 147889 rules out a common carrier for these two DIBs. Since the ionisation fraction for small PAHs in this translucent cloud is known to be low compared to diffuse clouds, the weakness of the 15268 Angstrom DIB suggests that an ionised species could be the carrier of this NIR DIB. Massive stars drive the evolution of the interstellar medium through their radiative and mechanical energy input. After their birth, they form bubbles of hot gas surrounded by a dense shell. Traditionally, the formation of bubbles is explained through the input of a powerful stellar wind, even though direct evidence supporting this scenario is lacking. Here we explore the possibility that interstellar bubbles seen by the Spitzer- and Herschel space telescopes, blown by stars with log(L/L_sun) < 5.2, form and expand due to the thermal pressure accompanying ionization of the surrounding gas. We show that density gradients in the natal cloud or a puncture in the swept up shell lead to an ionized gas flow through the bubble into the general interstellar medium, which is traced by a dust wave near the star, demonstrating the importance of radiation pressure during this phase. Dust waves provide a natural explanation for the presence of dust inside H II bubbles, offer a novel method to study dust in H II regions and provide direct evidence that bubbles are relieving their pressure into the ISM through a champagne flow, acting as a probe of the radiative interaction of a massive star with its surroundings. We create a parameter space connecting the ambient density, the ionizing source luminosity, and the position of the dust wave, while using the well-studied H II bubbles RCW 120 and RCW 82 as benchmarks of our model. Finally, we briefly examine the implications of our study for the environments of super star clusters formed in UltraLuminous InfraRed Galaxies (ULIRGs), merging galaxies and the early Universe, which occur in very luminous and dense environments and where radiation pressure is expected to dominate the dynamical evolution., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures: corrected typos

Observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope and the WISE satellite have revealed a prominent arc-like structure at 50" ($\simeq0.1$ pc) from the O9.5V/B0.5V system $\sigma$ Ori AB. We attribute this dust structure to the interaction of radiation pressure from the star with dust carried along by the IC 434 photo-evaporative flow of ionized gas from the dark cloud L1630. We have developed a quantitative model for the interaction of a dusty ionized flow with nearby (massive) stars where radiation pressure stalls dust, piling it up at an appreciable distance (> 0.1 pc), and force it to flow around the star. The model demonstrates that for the conditions in IC 434, the gas will decouple from the dust and will keep its original flow lines. We argue that this dust structure is the first example of a dust wave created by a massive star moving through the interstellar medium. Dust waves (and bow waves) stratify dust grains according to their radiation pressure opacity, which reflects the size distribution and composition of the grain material. Comparison of our model with observations implies that dust-gas coupling through Coulomb interaction is less important than previously thought, challenging our understanding of grain dynamics in hot, ionized regions of space. We describe the difference between dust (and bow) waves and classical bow shocks. We conclude that dust waves and bow waves should be common around stars showing the weak-wind phenomenon and that these structures are best observed at mid-IR to FIR wavelengths. In particular, dust waves and bow waves are most efficiently formed around weak-wind stars moving through a high density medium. The optical to near-infrared (300 - 2500 nm) spectrum of the candidate massive Young Stellar Object (YSO) B275, embedded in the star forming region M17, has been observed with X-shooter on the ESO Very Large Telescope. The spectrum includes both photospheric absorption lines and emission features (H and Ca triplet emission lines, 1st and 2nd overtone CO bandhead emission), as well as an infrared excess indicating the presence of a (flaring) circumstellar disk. The strongest emission lines are double-peaked with a peak separation ranging between 70 and 105 km s^-1 and provide information on the physical structure of the disk. The underlying photospheric spectrum is classified as B6-B7, significantly cooler than a previous estimate based on modeling of the spectral energy distribution. This discrepancy is solved by allowing for a larger stellar radius (i.e. a bloated star), and thus positioning the star above the main sequence. This constitutes the first firm spectral classification of an early-B pre-main-sequence (PMS) star. We discuss the position of B275 in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram in terms of PMS evolution. Although the position is consistent with PMS tracks of heavily accreting protostars (Macc > 10^-5 Msun yr^-1), the fact that the photosphere of the object is detectable suggests that the current mass-accretion rate is not very high., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted to A&A letters
