Abstract

High values of dielectric and piezoelectric coefficients in piezoceramics are due to the superposition of extrinsic and intrinsic effects. The aim of this paper is to gain insights into the intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms present in ceramics. It is assumed that the intrinsic effect has a linear behaviour and is temperature-independent. On the other hand, the extrinsic effect, which corresponds to the domain wall movement, has a non-linear dependence, and is temperature-dependent. Therefore, it can be assumed that at a very low temperature the extrinsic contribution disappears because the domains freeze up. Also, it is considered that the intrinsic and extrinsic effects are independent and may be added together. From these hypotheses, the linear, intrinsic and extrinsic coefficients may be obtained. Linear dielectric and piezoelectric measurements have been carried out at very low temperatures, as well as non-linear measurements, using different piezoceramic materials. An analysis of the 180º and non-180º domain wall extrinsic contribution is conducted producing different contributions on the dielectric and piezoelectric coefficients. A model of the extrinsic contribution of non-180º domain wall in grain ceramics with a ferroelectric domain laminar structure has been developed. The non-linear dielectric anisotropy, (Δε11)NL>(Δε33)NL, is measured and supports the previous model.Los altos valores de los coeficientes dieléctricos y piezoeléctricos en las piezocerámicas son debidos a la superposición de los efectos intrínsecos y extrínsecos. El objetivo de este trabajo es profundizar en los mecanismos presentes en las cerámicas y que producen estos efectos. Se asume que el efecto intrínseco tiene un comportamiento lineal que es independiente de la temperatura, mientras que el efecto extrínseco, producido por el movimiento de paredes de dominio, tiene una dependencia no lineal y depende de la temperatura. También puede aceptarse que a muy baja temperatura la contribución extrínseca desaparece, debido a que los dominios se congelan. Además se considera que los efectos intrínsecos y extrínsecos son independientes y pueden sumarse. Estas hipótesis permiten calcular los coeficientes lineal, intrínseco y extrínseco. Se han realizado medidas lineales de los coeficientes elásticos, dieléctricos y piezoeléctricos a muy baja temperatura, así como medidas no lineales, sobre diferentes cerámicas. Se analiza la diferente repercusión de las paredes de dominio de 180º y de no-180º en los coeficientes dieléctricos y piezoeléctricos. Se ha desarrollado un modelo de contribución extrínseca por dominios de no-180º con estructura laminar de dominios ferroeléctricos en los granos de la cerámica. La anisotropía dieléctrica no lineal, (Δε11)NL>(Δε33)NL, se ha medido y confirma dicho modelo.

Abstract

A theoretical study of cell evolution is presented here. By using a toolbox containing an intracellular catalytic reaction network model and a mutation-selection process, four distinct phases of self-organization were unveiled. First, the nutrients prevail as the central substrate of the chemical reactions. Second, the cell becomes a small-world. Third, a highly connected core component emerges, concurrently with the nutrient carriers becoming the central product of reactions. Finally, the cell reaches a steady configuration where the concentrations of the core chemical species are described by Zipf's law., Comment: 13 pages, 15 figures

Introduction: A “Think Tank” at the International Consultation on Incontinence-Research Society meeting held in Bristol, United Kingdom in June 2023 considered the progress and promise of machine learning (ML) applied to urodynamic data. Methods: Examples of the use of ML applied to data from uroflowmetry, pressure flow studies and imaging were presented. The advantages and limitations of ML were considered. Recommendations made during the subsequent debate for research studies were recorded. Results: ML analysis holds great promise for the kind of data generated in urodynamic studies. To date, ML techniques have not yet achieved sufficient accuracy for routine diagnostic application. Potential approaches that can improve the use of ML were agreed and research questions were proposed. Conclusions: ML is well suited to the analysis of urodynamic data, but results to date have not achieved clinical utility. It is considered likely that further research can improve the analysis of the large, multifactorial data sets generated by urodynamic clinics, and improve to some extent data pattern recognition that is currently subject to observer error and artefactual noise.

Abstract

Introduction: The evidence basis for therapy selection in women who have failed primary stress urinary incontinence (SUI) surgery is limited. The ICI‐RS group discussed the available data at its meeting in June 2023, particularly the anatomical characteristics as assessed using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound (US) modalities, functional characteristics associated with storage and voiding urodynamic assessment, as well as the patient characteristics that might influence outcomes. This paper summarizes the evidence base that supported these discussions and offers the basis for research proposals for future groups. Methods: A literature search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials was performed, and the data is presented. Research questions are based on the knowledge gaps highlighted. Results: Possible MRI parameters that may influence outcomes were striated urethral sphincter volume, bladder and proximal urethral funneling, pubo‐urethral ligament integrity, distance of the bladder neck below the pubococcygeal line, posterior urethra‐vesical angle, and bladder neck to levator ani distance. US parameters included sling distance to the urethral lumen and pubis, sling position, bladder neck mobility, and lateral arm asymmetry, twisting, or curling. Urodynamic parameters included detrusor overactivity, Valsalva leak point pressure, maximum urethral closure pressure, and bladder outlet obstruction. Important patient parameters included body mass index, age, and previous interventions. Conclusions: Identifying and quantifying causative factors in patients with recurrent SUI, that allow clinicians to modify subsequent treatment choices and techniques may help reduce treatment failure and complications. Formulating algorithms is the next step in optimizing patient counseling, surgical selection, and healthcare allocation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

SrNaBi2Nb3O12 powder was prepared via the conventional solid-state reaction method. X-ray structural studies confirmed the phase to be a three-layered member of the Aurivillius family of oxides. SrNaBi2Nb3O12 (SNBN) ceramics exhibited the typical characteristics of relaxor ferroelectrics, associated with broad and dispersive dielectric maxima. The variation of temperature of dielectric maxima (Tm) with frequency obeyed the Vogel-Fulcher relationship. Relaxor behavior was believed to be arising from the cationic disorder at A-site. Abstract

Due to their chemical and physical properties, this study focuses on the effect of sonication over carbon quantum dots synthesized by means of hydrothermal route, having as precursor the sour lemon juice from Michoacán, Mexico. The exfoliation was carried out with a sonotrode in times of 1, 2 and 3 hours to provide an explanation over the effect of it on the photoluminescence, where it was found that with times of 1 hour, the PL emission is improved resulting from 261 a.u. to 448 a.u. Other characterizations were carried out to confirm the results obtained in PL, where the average particle size was analyzed by SEM, particle sizes ranging from 5 to 11 nm were observed, with an average size of 7.5 nm and to confirm the carbonaceous material, UV-Vis was performed showing a resolved UV absorption band around 340 nm. Abstract

Precarious manhood beliefs portray manhood, relative to womanhood, as a social status that is hard to earn, easy to lose, and proven via public action. Here, we present cross-cultural data on a brief measure of precarious manhood beliefs (the Precarious Manhood Beliefs scale [PMB]) that covaries meaningfully with other cross-culturally validated gender ideologies and with country-level indices of gender equality and human development. Using data from university samples in 62 countries across 13 world regions (N = 33,417), we demonstrate: (1) the psychometric isomorphism of the PMB (i.e., its comparability in meaning and statistical properties across the individual and country levels); (2) the PMB’s distinctness from, and associations with, ambivalent sexism and ambivalence toward men; and (3) associations of the PMB with nation-level gender equality and human development. Findings are discussed in terms of their statistical and theoretical implications for understanding widely-held beliefs about the precariousness of the male gender role.

Abstract

Social role theory posits that binary gender gaps in agency and communion should be larger in less egalitarian countries, reflecting these countries’ more pronounced sex-based power divisions. Conversely, evolutionary and self-construal theorists suggest that gender gaps in agency and communion should be larger in more egalitarian countries, reflecting the greater autonomy support and flexible self-construction processes present in these countries. Using data from 62 countries (N = 28,640), we examine binary gender gaps in agentic and communal self-views as a function of country-level objective gender equality (the Global Gender Gap Index) and subjective distributions of social power (the Power Distance Index). Findings show that in more egalitarian countries, gender gaps in agency are smaller and gender gaps in communality are larger. These patterns are driven primarily by cross-country differences in men’s self-views and by the Power Distance Index (PDI) more robustly than the Global Gender Gap Index (GGGI). We consider possible causes and implications of these findings.

Abstract

This work proposes and analyzes a low-cost fixed microstrip beamforming system based on a uniform linear array with four rectangular patch antennas controlled by a Butler matrix that operates in the 2.4 GHz ISM band. A 4×4 Butler matrix consisting of four hybrid quadrature directional couplers, two crossovers, and two 45° phase shifters was designed and implemented to control the beam direction of the entire system. Similarly, a comparative study is performed between two different antenna arrays, the first consisting of a conventional linear antenna array and the second antenna array consisting of four patch antennas loaded with metamaterial structures on the ground plane. Finally, the electrical performance of both smart beamforming systems was evaluated, and their potential application as a wireless power transmitter was evaluated. Four beams with distinct orientations were created in each situation. The smart antenna based on a conventional array has a higher gain, while the smart antenna based on metamaterial structures has a higher HPBW. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

La granulación por fusión en un solo paso es una técnica alternativa al resto de métodos de granulación basada en la utilización de un agente aglutinante sólido que funde a temperaturas entre 50-80 ºC, en lugar de solventes acuosos u orgánicos. Esta propiedad permite emplear esta técnica para la formulación de fármacos sensibles a la humedad, evitar el controvertido uso de solventes orgánicos y acortar el proceso de granulación en términos de tiempo y energía al eliminar la fase de secado. Asimismo, una adecuada selección del agente aglutinante y del resto de excipientes permitirá el desarrollo y elaboración de formas farmacéuticas tanto de liberación inmediata como de liberación controlada. Uno de los equipos más empleados en la granulación por fusión es el mezclador granulador de alta velocidad, que permite realizar esta técnica en un solo paso. Además, una vez optimizado el proceso, permite su aplicación a escala industrial. En este artículo se realiza una descripción de la técnica de granulación por fusión y las variables que influyen en dicho proceso en un mezclador granulador de alta velocidad.Melt granulation in a high-shear mixer is an alternative technique that converts fine powders into granules. The powder agglomeration is promoted by the addition of a low melting point binder, which is solid at room temperature and melts at relatively low temperatures (50-80 ºC). This technique is a good alternative to the conventional wet granulation process when the use of solvents is not indicated. Moreover, it offers several advantages since the drying phase is eliminated and the process is less consuming in terms of time and energy. By selecting the suitable binder, melt granulation can be used either to prepare immediate or controlled release formulations. One of the equipments most commonly used for melt granulation is the high shear mixer, which allows to development the process in "one-step". Additionally, when the process is optimized, it makes possible the industrial scaling-up. This paper focuses on the description of the melt granulation technique and the parameters that influence the process in high shear mixers.

Pregnant women diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) were included (N=128). Depressive and anxiety symptoms were evaluated using CES-D and STAI, respectively. Patients were sub-classified according to percentile 75 for Low and High Trait Anxiety (LTA, HTA) and Low and High State Anxiety (LSA, HSA); depressive symptoms were compared between pregnant women and women in the postpartum, by state and trait levels.Results: CES-D scores differed according to state and trait anxiety levels: while we observed that depressive scores (CES-D) were higher in HTA patients compared to LTA prenatally (35.9±9,5 vs 21.2±10,8 respectively; p=0.001), this finding was not observed in the postpartum period. In the case of state anxiety depressive scores were elevated among HSA versus LSA groups before delivery (33.0±11.3 vs 14.0±6.7 respectively; p=0.008) and after partum (35.1±8.06 vs 10.0±6.0; p=0.005).Conclusions: Patients showed higher scores of depressive symptoms when high trait or state anxiety comorbidity is present during the perinatal period. Abstract

Background: Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS) causes disability and lowers health-related quality of life (HRQoL) for patients. Many patients become refractory to Conventional Medical Management (CMM) and Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) is advised. However, comparative effectiveness research of both clinical approaches still lacks further evidence. Objectives: This study describes Comparative Effectiveness Research of CMM versus SCS to provide real world evidence regarding the appropriate means for FBSS management, in terms of Patient-Reported Outcomes Measures. Study Design: Naturalistic, pragmatic, prospective observational multicenter SEFUDOCE-study Setting: FBSS patients attending clinical programmed visits in Pain Unit at Hospital Universitario de La Princesa and at Hospital General Universitario de Alicante (Spain). Methods: Study evaluates the impact on pain, functional limitation, and HRQoL of CMM versus SCS in the management of FBSS. Patients completed Pain Detect Questionnaire, Oswestry Disability Index, EQ-5D-3L, Medical Outcomes Study Sleep Scale, and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale at baseline and at 3, 6, 12, 18 and 24 months. Longitudinal data were analysed with repeated measures one-way analysis of variance adjusting by confounders. Results: Eighty-five adults patients with FBSS receiving treatment according to current clinical practice were assessed. After 24 months, the PainDETECT Questionnnaire showed that CMM patients maintained similar scores, while SCS patients reduced their overall score (current pain: 6 CMM versus 4.21 SCS, P = 0.0091; intensity strongest pain: 7.77 CMM versus 6.07 SCS, P = 0.0103; average pain: 6.46 CMM versus 4.75 SCS, P = 0.0012). For the Oswestry Disability Index, the Medical Outcomes Study Sleep Scale, and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale no significant inter-group differences were found. EQ-5D utility improved in SCS patients from baseline (baseline: 0.32 CMM versus 0.22 SCS; 24-month: 0.37 CMM versus 0.63 SCS, P = 0.026). Twentyfour month follow-up showed unlikely presence of neuropathic pain and moderate disability in SCS patients, whereas the CMM patients maintained baseline health state. Limitations: Given the nature of the intervention, conducting a blinded study was not considered practically feasible. A larger sample could also overcome having younger patients in the SCS arm. Conclusions: SCS may improve the HRQoL and functionality of FBSS patients with refractory pain in the long-term compared to CMM alone.

Abstract

Precarious manhood beliefs portray manhood, relative to womanhood, as a social status that is hard to earn, easy to lose, and proven via public action. Here, we present cross-cultural data on a brief measure of precarious manhood beliefs (the Precarious Manhood Beliefs scale [PMB]) that covaries meaningfully with other cross-culturally validated gender ideologies and with country-level indices of gender equality and human development. Using data from university samples in 62 countries across 13 world regions (N = 33,417), we demonstrate: (1) the psychometric isomorphism of the PMB (i.e., its comparability in meaning and statistical properties across the individual and country levels); (2) the PMB’s distinctness from, and associations with, ambivalent sexism and ambivalence toward men; and (3) associations of the PMB with nation-level gender equality and human development. Findings are discussed in terms of their statistical and theoretical implications for understanding widely-held beliefs about the precariousness of the male gender role.

Abstract

Men sometimes withdraw support for gender equality movements when their higher gender status is threatened. Here, we expand the focus of this phenomenon by examining it cross-culturally, to test if both individual- and country-level variables predict men's collective action intentions to support gender equality. We tested a model in which men's zero-sum beliefs about gender predict reduced collective action intentions via an increase in hostile sexism. Because country-level gender equality may threaten men's higher gender status, we also examined whether the path from zero-sum beliefs to collective action intentions was stronger in countries higher in gender equality. Multilevel modeling on 6,734 men from 42 countries supported the individual-level mediation model, but found no evidence of moderation by country-level gender equality. Both country-level gender equality and individual-level zero-sum thinking independently predicted reductions in men's willingness to act collectively for gender equality. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract

Melt granulation in a high-shear mixer is an alternative technique that converts fine powders into granules. The powder agglomeration is promoted by the addition of a low melting point binder, which is solid at room temperature and melts at relatively low temperatures (50-80 ºC). This technique is a good alternative to the conventional wet granulation process when the use of solvents is not indicated. Moreover, it offers several advantages since the drying phase is eliminated and the process is less consuming in terms of time and energy. By selecting the suitable binder, melt granulation can be used either to prepare immediate or controlled release formulations. One of the equipments most commonly used for melt granulation is the high shear mixer, which allows to development the process in “one-step”. Additionally, when the process is optimized, it makes possible the industrial scaling-up. This paper focuses on the description of the melt granulation technique and the parameters that influence the process in high shear mixers.

Abstract

The current wealth of genomic variation data identified at nucleotide level presents the challenge of understanding by which mechanisms amino acid variation affects cellular processes. These effects may manifest as distinct phenotypic differences between individuals or result in the development of disease. Physical interactions between molecules are the linking steps underlying most, if not all, cellular processes. Understanding the effects that sequence variation has on a molecule’s interactions is a key step towards connecting mechanistic characterization of nonsynonymous variation to phenotype. We present an open access resource created over 14 years by IMEx database curators, featuring 28,000 annotations describing the effect of small sequence changes on physical protein interactions. We describe how this resource was built, the formats in which the data is provided and offer a descriptive analysis of the data set.
