Stingrays genus Hypanus currently encompasses nine valid species from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, though the phylogenetic relationships amongst some of them were based on a single mitochondrial gene and did not involve all putative Hypanus species. To address the monophyly of the genus and its relationship to other Dasyatinae genera, we sequenced the whole mitochondrial genomes of all species that supposedly belong to this genus and representatives of Dasyatinae, Neotrygoninae, and, as an outgroup, Fontitrygon (Urogymninae). Based on phylogenetic analyses, Hypanus is the sister-genus to all other Dasyatinae, and this subfamily is closely-related to Neotrygoninae within the family Dasyatidae. The species F. geijskesi is closely related to H. guttatus rather than to its congeners and should be allocated to Hypanus as H. geijskesi for the genus monophyly. After lineage delimitation analyses, we identified three species complexes composed of H. americanus, H. guttatus, and H. say, with two distinct evolutionary lineages within each, leaving the genus with 13 evolutionary units, of which six are currently under threat and only H. sabinus is of least concern. The urgency in identifying these new lineages lies in the fact they might already be under threat before being formally described. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The purpose of this work was to evaluate the projections of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) over the North Tropical Atlantic Ocean and the exclusion over the semiarid region of Rio Grande do Norte, as well as the relationship between these two variables for the experiments historical an RCP 6.0 of the AR5 / IPCC for the time frame from 2006 to 2017 of the models. Thus, it can be inferred how the projections of these experiments can be used as tools for analyzing the future state of TSM over the tropical Atlantic and on the transformation in the semiarid region of RN. RStudio software ande Microsoft Excel 2017 are used for the analysis calculating the standard deviation of the data. Taking into account the results, it is observed that in the months when a SST over the southern tropical Atlantic is more forgotten and less in the northern potion of the tropical atlantic ocean it is possible to notice an increase in the monthly averages and recorded years of reserve. Thus, when the TSM region of the South Atlantic is more heated, the pressure on the outer surface, there is greater evaporation of the water content of the ocean and corroborates the intensification of upward movements that intensify the mass convergence, favoring the formation of clouds and precipitation.

Migrating birds contend with dynamic wind conditions that ultimately influence most aspects of their migration, from broad-scale movements to individual decisions about where to rest and refuel. We used weather surveillance radar data to measure spring stopover distributions of northward migrating birds along the northern Gulf of Mexico coast and found a strong influence of winds over nonadjacent water bodies, the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean, along with the contiguous Gulf of Mexico. Specifically, we quantified the relative influence of meridional (north-south) and zonal (west-east) wind components over the 3 water bodies on weekly spring stopover densities along western, central, and eastern regions of the northern Gulf of Mexico coast. Winds over the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean were just as, or more, influential than winds over the Gulf of Mexico, with the highest stopover densities in the central and eastern regions of the coast following the fastest winds from the east over the Caribbean Sea. In contrast, stopover density along the western region of the coast was most influenced by winds over the Gulf of Mexico, with the highest densities following winds from the south. Our results elucidate the important role of wind conditions over multiple water bodies on regionwide stopover distributions and complement tracking data showing Nearctic-Neotropical birds flying nonstop from South America to the northern Gulf of Mexico coast. Smaller-bodied birds may be particularly sensitive to prevailing wind conditions during nonstop flights over water, with probable orientation and energetic consequences that shape subsequent terrestrial stopover distributions. In the future, the changing climate is likely to alter wind conditions associated with migration, so birds that employ nonstop over-water flight strategies may face growing challenges. - Abstract
This investigation analyses the yellow fever epidemic that arrived to Buenos Aires in the year 1871. Connected with the COVID-19 pandemic that defied the globalized world, it is intended to look in the past the problems that the societies faced when the plagues arrived at their front doors. In this case, the transoceanic connections that took place until the second half of the19th century will be analyzed. The ships not only transported people, ideas and cargo, but also pathogens inside them. From the transnational approach to environmental history, the newspapers' reports, the memories of the Buenos Aires port health commission, those of the Central Immigration Commission, as well as articles from the Spanish newspaper Eco de Alicante will be analyzed, to stablish a connection between the epidemic developed in the end of 1870 in Barcelona the one that started in Buenos Aires in 1871. It is concluded that, being these two ports attached permanently and forced to face the shortcomings above the ships, such as the overcrowding of passengers and the deficient control of the sanitary authorities, the yellow fever epidemic of Buenos Aires could have arrived from Barcelona as well and not only from Asunción, as the consulted bibliography states.

In this study, multi-tissue (yolk and carapace) stable isotope analysis was used to assess individual isotopic niche trajectories of nesting green turtles on Rocas Atoll, off northeastern Brazil, and to reveal a diet shift in the temporal dimension. The diet trajectories of individual green turtles were highly directional, with a stronger component towards decreasing values of d15N from carapace to yolk. When the green turtles are in their foraging sites (temporal window measured by the yolk samples), they are more herbivores. Conversely, in a broader temporal window, the green turtles demonstrate a carnivore-omnivore strategy, such as represented by heavier d15N values in the carapace. This finding confirms a temporal diet shift. This is the first study that applies trophic niche trajectories for sea turtles, adding a new isotopic tool to understand the trophic ecology of these migrant animals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The current known distribution of Omura's whale includes the tropical and warm temperate waters of the western Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic Oceans. Evidence of their presence in the Atlantic Ocean is based on beach cast specimens found on the coasts of Mauritania (North Atlantic) and Northeastern Brazil (South Atlantic). The present study characterizes the occurrence of this species in the São Pedro and São Paulo Archipelago (SPSPA), on the mid-Atlantic ridge between South America and Africa, based on autonomous recording systems. Acoustic signals were similar, but not identical, to B. omurai vocalizations recorded off the coast of Madagascar. Although these signals were recorded for only 11 months, there are peaks in vocal activity between May and June in the vicinities of SPSPA, suggesting either a shift in distribution within the Atlantic equatorial waters or seasonality in the species' vocal behavior in this region. The first acoustic records of Omura's whales in the Equatorial Atlantic suggest that these animals may also use deep-water habitats, in addition to the shallow-water habitat use observed in other regions. The solitary behavior is an unusual and peculiar behavior reported in a few sociable dolphin species. This study presents the solitary behavior of an adult rough-toothed dolphin, Steno bredanensis, in the Açu Superport (21°49'S; 041°00'W), northern Rio de Janeiro State, SE Brazil. Data about the dolphin were obtained from mobile phone videos and reports by local professionals. Probably, the same dolphin was there since 2017-2018 up to April 2020 (at least). In general, the solitary dolphin swims next to supply boats navigating along the port internal channel, and it rarely continues towards open sea. The dolphin plays with buoys and containment barriers, rubs itself against hulls, and bow-rides and jumps. There is no report of people swimming with this solitary dolphin, touching it, or offering it food in the Açu Superport. Thus, there seems to be no threats to the animal's integrity locally. In the context of China’s Going Out Strategy, Beijing has been looking for alternatives in order to diversify its energy sources, whilst enabling Chinese companies to find new markets worldwide. Some of these alternatives have been found in the Atlantic Ocean, notably in the Gulf of Guinea (GoG), where the discovery of new offshore hydrocarbon reserves has increased its importance in the global scene. Through Neorealism, this dissertation aims at exploring the significance acquired by GoG between 2001 and 2021 within the context of Chinese increasing maritime presence in the Atlantic Ocean. Moreover, it will outline the opportunities that the GoG may provide to boost China’s leverage in the African continent vis à-vis other external powers, notably the US. This Dissertation shall conclude that the GoG has developed itself into a crucial region in China’s African policy not only as source of riches, and support for food security and the One-China Policy, but also as a testing ground for China’s gradual shift of focus from geo-economics to geopolitics.

It is hard to measure the importance of the impact produced by the knowledge of a hitherto unknown continent in the thinking of early modern Europeans. This land, populated by plants and animals that find no comparison with those that made the stock of their knowledge, and by human beings with cultures and material heritages not comparable to those hitherto known. The Spaniards were the forefront of European progress in the newly discovered lands in the sixteenth century. They had to face the expanded horizon of their experiences with the same material and intellectual weapons that had served them until 1492 to join Renaissance Europe. European and American historiography until the twentieth century show the success with which the Spaniards and Portuguese managed to impose their rule constructing vast colonial territories.America was conceived in political projects of European and especially Spanish, first, as a tool to solve the demographic, economic, religious and social problems of the Old Continent. The Spanish Monarchy of Thomas Campanella exhibits a possible effect of such experience. Witness of the expansion of the known world by Europeans, conceived a project that goes beyond the Mediterranean space integrating the New World in the Hispanic Empire, but not immune to the effects of an eurocentric perspective. In this project, and correlatively, American Indians have a passive and marginal role.

18 pages, 7 figures, supplementary material https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fmars.2022.887346/full#supplementary-material.-- Data availability statement: Publicly available datasets were analyzed in this study. This data can be found at the PANGAEA DATA PUBLISHER under https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.873570; https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.878069; and https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.923299, To assess the anthropogenic effect on biodiversity, it is essential to understand the global diversity distribution of the major groups at the base of the food chain, ideally before global warming initiation (1850 Common Era CE). Since organisms in the plankton are highly interconnected and carbonate synthesizing species have a good preservation state in the Atlantic Ocean, the diversity distribution pattern of planktonic foraminifera from 1741 core-top surface sediment samples (expanded ForCenS database) provides a case study to comprehend centennial to decadal time-averaged diversity patterns at pre-1970 CE times, the tempo of the substantial increase in tropospheric warming. In this work, it is hypothesized and tested for the first time, that the large-scale diversity patterns of foraminifera communities are determined by sea surface temperature (SST, representing energy), Chl-a (a surrogate for photosynthetic biomass), and ocean kinetic energy (as EKE). Alpha diversity was estimated using species richness (S), Shannon Wiener index (H), and Simpson evenness (E), and mapped using geostatistical approaches. The three indices are significantly related to SST, Chl-a, and EKE (71-88% of the deviance in the generalized additive mixed model, including a spatial component). Beta diversity was studied through species turnover using gradient forest analysis (59% of the variation). The primary community thresholds of foraminifera species turnover were associated with 5-10 °C and 22-28 °C SST, 0.05-0.15 mg m-3 Chl-a, and 1.2-2.0 cm2 s-2 log10 EKE energy, respectively. Six of the most important foraminifera species identified for the environmental thresholds of beta diversity are also fundamental in transfer functions, further reinforcing the approaches used. The geographic location of the transition between the four main biogeographic zones was redefined based on the results of beta diversity analysis and incorporating the new datasets, identifying the major marine latitudinal gradients, the most important upwelling areas (Benguela Current, Canary Current), the Equatorial divergence, and the subtropical fronts (Gulf Stream-North Atlantic Drift path in the north, and the South Atlantic current in the south). In conclusion, we provide statistical proof that energy (SST), food supply (Chl-a), and currents (EKE) are the main environmental drivers shaping planktonic foraminifera diversity in the Atlantic ocean and define the associated thresholds for species change on those variables, This study received Portuguese national funds from FCT - Foundation for Science and Technology through projects UIDB/04326/2020, UIDP/04326/2020 LA/P/0101/2020 and PTDC/AAG-GLO/3737/2012 and PINFRA/22157/2016 – EMSO-PT. Historiography has kept in its scope of work special dedication to the study of the expansion, colonization and construction of the Portuguese maritime empire south of the Azores Archipelago, South Atlantic and Indian Ocean. However, the Portuguese navigations took front in other regions of the globe that until now have gone more unnoticed to the academic community. This is the case of the Labrador Sea and Newfoundland, in the far north of the American continent, where navigators in the service of the Portuguese crown have sailed since 1452. The goal of this project is therefore to trace the main lines of force of the Portuguese presence in Newfoundland and Labrador in order to identify not only human relationships, but also natural relationships in this part of the Empire. It is also intended to discern when, how and why these navigators arrived there

ABSTRACT: Renewable energies, including wind energy, are a clean, inexhaustible and increasingly competitive source of energy, which distinguishes them from fossil fuels as they do not produce greenhouse gases. Given that climate change has become one of the major concerns of the international community, these energy sources are growing, as reflected in the statistics provided annually by the International Energy Agency (IEA), forecasting an increase in the share of renewable energies by 18% in the period from 2018 to 2040 (rising from 26% to 44%). As wind energy is derived from a climate variable, it is particularly important to take climate change into account, as it may affect it. This study analyses the possible impact that climate change could have on the wind energy resource in a set of 6 offshore wind farms in Europe, distributed in the North Atlantic, from the North Sea to the Canary Islands. To this end, the existing climatic variations have been analysed in the face of greenhouse gas emission scenarios (SSP1: Sustainability, SSP2: Middle of the road, SSP3: Regional rivalry, SSP4: Inequality, SSP5: Fossil fuel-driven development). All of them have a horizon year, being: 2020 for SSP1 and SSP4, 2020-2040 for SSP2 and SSP5 & 2030-2050 for SSP3, and a deadline has been set for the fulfilment of all of them, being the year 2100). The atmospheric information used is the latest European reanalysis product (ERA5) and the latest climate simulations on which the IPCC studies are based, from the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) project, specifically 5 CMIP6 models. The climate analysis begins with a characterisation of the existing atmospheric circulation patterns in the Atlantic region of Europe. For this purpose, a 'weather type' characterisation of the wind fields over the marine environment has been developed, applying a non-linear methodology and a non-hierarchical classification algorithm. Once the conditions during the present climate have been characterised, an evaluation of the climate models has been carried out, in order to check whether the CMIP6 models correctly reproduce the various types of weather occurring in the North Atlantic. In turn, a series of statistics (similarity index, SI and relative entropy, RE) have been calculated to check the similarity between the historical and modelled data. The results of this quality assessment of the working climate simulations indicate different expertise between the models, but sufficient skill to include all 5 in the subsequent analyses. Subsequently, we proceed to the calculation of possible future changes indicated by the set of models used. On the one hand, changes in the spatial distributions of wind speed at 10m height and pressure at sea level have been obtained. On the other hand, a series of climatic indicators have been calculated for each park under study. These indicators are summarised as mean wind, extreme wind (corresponding to the 99% percentile), wind power density, operational time, gross energy yield and capacity factor. These indicators have been estimated considering the height of the wind turbine and the technology used in each wind farm. The results indicate a clear variation between the different wind farms studied, such that increases in electrical performance (AEP & CF) of between 0.31 and 4.93% can be seen in the LondonArray, EgmondAanZee and SanCibrao wind farms and decreases of between 1.36 and 14.48% in DanTysk, Noirmoutiere and SanBorondon. It is worth noting that the wind farms where the greatest increase or decrease in electricity output can be found are two wind farms in the pipeline located on the Spanish coast, with output increasing by 3.1% at SanCibrao and decreasing by 14.5% at SanBorondón.

However, there is lack of data on the assembly rules of sponge-associated prokaryotic communities, especially for those inhabiting biodiversity hotspots, such as ecoregions between tropical and warm temperate southwestern Atlantic waters. The sympatric species Aplysina caissara, Axinella corrugata, and Dragmacidon reticulatum were collected along with environmental samples from the north coast of SAo Paulo (Brazil). Overall, 64 prokaryotic phyla were detected; 51 were associated with sponge species, and the dominant were Proteobacteria, Bacteria (unclassified), Cyanobacteria, Crenarchaeota, and Chloroflexi. Around 64% and 89% of the unclassified operational taxonomical units (OTUs) associated with Brazilian sponge species showed a sequence similarity below 97%, with sequences in the Silva and NCBI Type Strain databases, respectively, indicating the presence of a large number of unidentified taxa. The prokaryotic communities were species-specific, ranging 56%-80% of the OTUs and distinct from the environmental samples. Fifty-four lineages were responsible for the differences detected among the categories. Functional prediction demonstrated that Ap. caissara was enriched for energy metabolism and biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, whereas D. reticulatum was enhanced for metabolism of terpenoids and polyketides, as well as xenobiotics' biodegradation and metabolism. This survey revealed a high level of novelty associated with Brazilian sponge species and that distinct members responsible from the differences among Brazilian sponge species could be correlated to the predicted functions.

The present study is a further contribution to the systematic knowledge of the shallow water marine ostracodes from the Brazilian oceanic islands. A total of 14 species belonging to 10 genera and eight families is herein identified. One new genus and species are described and illustrated: Berguecythere insularis gen. nov., sp. nov. In addition to this new taxon, the abundant species Loxocorniculum tricornatum Krutak, 1971, widely distributed in recent sediments in the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, north and northeast of Brazil and the Rocas Atoll, along with the cosmopolitan tropical ostracode Triebelina sertata Triebel, 1948, were also identified at specific level. The remaining 11 species were left at the genus level, and should provide new species. Ecological, zoo- and paleozoogeographical aspects were also briefly discussed.
