Presented is a general overview and summary of the 1974-1975 Sea Grant Program activities and research. Included are marine advisory services, education, coastal resources, aquaculture, fisheries, new marine products, and energy resources. (SL)

This report describes the activities of a program designed to develop the information and systems necessary for managing the Continental Shelf and Coastal Zone of Northern New England. Ten research areas or projects are discussed: aquaculture, biology and ecology, coastal oceanography, buoy systems studies, man in the sea, marine platforms and controls, preparation and dissemination of information related to ocean engineering, pollution hazards, sea-bottom resources, and the Undergraduate Oceans Project Course. Studies related to each of these areas are presented and include a brief description of the research, progress of the research, and principal investigators. (MH)

The Annual Report for 1973-1974 is intended to be a general overview of the total activities of the Sea Grant Program which supported projects that involved the services of 271 people, including graduate and undergraduate students from seven University of California campuses, a state university, a major state university laboratory and at a private university. Based on interviews with placement officers at more than 24 colleges in New England and information sought from corporate placement officials and college seniors, the job outlook for many 1975 New England college graduates seemed favorable according to early spring indications. Campus recruiting, as measured by the number of firms scheduling campus visits, was fairly active in late 1974 but worsened as the economic downturn continued in 1975. In areas of occupation, demand for most engineers was relatively favorable, there was a strong demand for accounting majors, and some encouragement for general business graduates, but liberal arts and science graduates faced a less favorable outlook. There were favorable opportunities in the health field, while teaching jobs continued to be scarce; other fields offered mixed opportunities. Other fields/topics discussed in this report are agriculture, communication, computer sciences, conservation, library science, oceanography and ocean engineering, pharmacists, urban planning, criminal justice, associate degree graduates, effects of affirmative action plans, effects of the energy crisis on 1975 recruiting, and the search for a job. This conference was an attempt to have the fishing industry join the state of Alaska in building fisheries education programs. Topics addressed in papers presented at the conference include: (1) fisheries as a part of life in Alaska, addressing participation of Alaska natives in commercial fisheries and national efforts; (2) the international perspective, discussing fisheries education system in Japan, Newfoundland fisheries, fisheries education in Denmark, and fisheries research and training programs of the Whitefish Authority (Hull, England); (3) technology of the fishing industry, including community college, university, and college programs; (4) fish as food, considering the educational needs of the seafood processing industry/workers and educational needs in food science and technology; (5) marine resource management, discussing aquaculture systems, constraints and outlook for fisheries and aquaculture, and education for marine resource management; and (6) the business of fishing, focusing on education for the business of fishing, educating fishermen and others to appreciate the importance of fishing as a business, and government involvement in United States fisheries development. Summaries of workshops considering fisheries and marine education needs in Alaskan elementary and secondary schools, planning for vocational/technical education, and university level programs (providing a survey of educational needs of fisheries/ecologists) are included. Knowing the relationship of the ocean to man, the weather and climate, availability of resources from the ocean, use of the ocean in transporation, waste disposal, and defense, and developing an understanding of the impact on the oceans of human activity are all goals of oceanographers. The goal of this brochure is to provide concise informative answers to questions that education and information sources are often called upon to answer. The title was chosen to avoid confusion with other publications and to reflect the presentation format. The following questions are addressed: (1) "What Is an Oceanographer?"; (2) "Where Does One Study Oceanography?"; (3) "Who Hires Oceanographers?"; (4) "Who Supports Oceanographers?"; and (5) "Where Does One Obtain Information?" Listed are the names and addresses of publications and the 31 sea grant institutions which are additional sources of information about oceanography, ocean research and career opportunities. (RT)

This publication presents the results of a survey conducted to determine the viewpoint of industry regarding the subject matter that should be included in ocean engineering education programs. Questionnaires were mailed to over 1,000 individuals; 270 replies, or 27 percent of those surveyed, respond. Seventy percent of the replies indicated involvement in some aspect of ocean engineering. The results showed that many of the established disciplines are involved in ocean engineering activities. The principal courses recommended were basic sciences, core material, applied sciences and humanities for an undergraduate curriculum; basic materials and applications were considered most desirable for graduate studies. Provided is a summary report of the third IOC/WMO (Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission/World Meteorological Organization) workshop of marine pollution monitoring. Summaries are presented in nine sections, including: (1) workshop opening; (2) welcoming addresses; (3) reports on the Marine Pollution (Petroleum) Monitoring Pilot Project (MAPMOOP) by the Secretariat and National Coordinators; (4) consideration of a plan of operations for the Marine Pollution Monitoring Programme (MPMP) with regard to petroleum; (5) preliminary assessment of the feasibility of including pollutants other than oil in the MPMP; (6) institutional arrangements for planning, coordination, and implementation of the MPMP; (7) training, education, and mutual assistance components of the MPMP; (8) adoption of the report; and (9) workshop closure. Also presented in seven appendices are workshop agenda, recommendations, list of participants, considerations affecting feasibility/desirability of continuing petroleum monitoring initiated under MAPMOOP, feasibility of establishing a digital data base for marine pollution (considering data generated outside MAPMOOP), statement by United Nations Environment Programme representative (Dr. C.C. Provided is a 4-page summary of the WESTPAC (Western Pacific) Workshop On Coastal Transport of Pollutants and five appendices. Workshop objectives were to review present knowledge of the physical dispersion, accumulation, and transportation of pollutants, and analytical methods and data processing in the Western Pacific Region; identify major research problems expected to be carried out in the coming 5 to 10 years, emphasizing study of methods and techniques of field measurements, and processing of data obtained; and to make recommendations for research and training problems and for cooperative data/information exchange in the region. Included in the summary are workshop mechanics (such as opening statements and administrative arrangements), lists of papers presented, list of accepted research projects, and highlights of training/data-exchange projects. Appendices include workshop agenda, list of participants, recommendations, and descriptions of 7 proposed research projects, and the proposed training and data-exchange projects. Title, background information, justification, and long-range/immediate objectives are provided for each project. Presented in table format are student enrollment data for geoscience disciplines at colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. Subfields for both countries include: geology; geophysics; oceanography; marine science; geological engineering; geophysical engineering; geochemistry; hydrology; mineralogy; paleontology; soil science; environmental science; and general earth science. Earth science teaching is also included for the United States. Data are presented for each of these disciplines alphabetically by institution (and alphabetically by state for the United States). Sections providing summary data and minority information are also included. Among the findings reported for the 1982-83 school year are those indicating that the total number of geoscience students at all academic levels in the United States (47,301) increased 6.4 percent over the previous academic year, that total male enrollment rose 6.7 percent and total female enrollment rose 5.5 percent over the 1981-82 figure, that women constituted 23.9 percent of all enrollments and earned 23.9 percent of all degrees, that minorities made up 2.6 percent of enrollees and earned 2.1 percent of all geoscience degrees in 1981-82, that enrollment increased at all three degree levels between 1981-82 and 1982-83, and that the 36,839 U.S. undergraduate majors represented a 7.43 percent increase over the previous year. Information is presented about the problems involved in using sea water in the steam propulsion systems of large, modern ships. Discussions supply background chemical information concerning the problems of corrosion, scale buildup, and sludge production. Suggestions are given for ways to maintain a good water treatment program to effectively deal with these problems. (CS)
