The world’s “100 worst invasive species” were listed in 2000. The list is taxonomically diverse, often cited (typically for single-species studies), and its species are frequently reported in global biodiversity data bases. We acted on the principle that these notorious species should be well-reported to help answer two questions about global biogeography of invasive species (i.e., not just their invaded ranges): (1) “how are data distributed globally?” and (2) “what predicts diversity?” We collected location data for each of the 100 species from multiple data bases; 95 had sufficient data for analyses. For question (1), we mapped global species richness and cumulative occurrences since 2000 in (0.5 degree)2 grids. For question (2) we compared alternative regression models representing non-exclusive hypotheses for geography (i.e., spatial autocorrelation), sampling effort, climate, and anthropocentric effects. Reported locations of the invasive species were spatially-biased, leaving large gaps on multiple continents. Accordingly, species richness was best explained by both anthropocentric effects not often used in biogeographic models (Government Effectiveness, Voice & Accountability, human population size) and typical natural factors (climate, geography; R2 = 0.87). Cumulative occurrence was strongly related to anthropocentric effects (R2 = 0.62). We extract five lessons for invasive species biogeography; foremost are the importance of anthropocentric measures for understanding invasive species diversity patterns and large lacunae in their known global distributions. Despite those knowledge gaps, advanced models here predict well the biogeography of the world’s worst invasive species for much of the world.

The dynamic nature of intrinsic (e.g., reproductive system, hybridization) and extrinsic factors (e.g., physical barriers to gene flow) across space and time generate complex biological processes that influence contemporary patterns of genetic diversity, highlighting the need for interdisciplinary studies. Using the widespread, mixed-mating annual Triodanis perfoliata, previous work demonstrated the important roles of breeding system, isolation by distance, and isolation by resistance in shaping patterns of population genetic diversity. Here we significantly build on this first step by incorporating paleoclimatic data, historical admixture, and estimating species divergence times across 18 populations of T. perfoliata spanning the contiguous US. This current study provides novel insights into factors driving patterns of intraspecific diversification that were not explained using only contemporary climate models. Specifically, these new analyses highlight the early Holocene (11.7 - 8.326 ka) and the Marine Isotope Stage M2 (ca. 3.3 Ma), as important time periods for explaining patterns of contemporary population genetic diversity, the latter of which appears to be an important time period for intraspecific divergence of T. perfoliata. In addition, we explored the influence of historical intrinsic factors, via admixture to explain patterns of population isolation and connectivity. The inclusion of an admixture analysis provided clarity through evidence of historical gene flow between populations that would have experienced suitable habitat connectivity in past climates. Our study illustrates the importance of incorporating historic, as well as contemporary data, into phylogeographic studies to generate a comprehensive understanding of patterns of population diversity, and the processes important in driving these patterns.

Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) have attracted considerable attention owing to their unique physiological functions. Two important tetrasaccharides, lacto-N-tetraose (LNT) and lacto-N-neotetraose (LNnT), are core structures of HMOs. Their safety has been evaluated and they can be added to infant formula as functional ingredients. The fucosylated derivatives of LNT and LNnT, mainly lacto-N-fucopentaose (LNFP) I, LNFP II, LNFP III, and lacto-N-difucohexaose I, exhibit prominent physiological characteristics, including modificating the intestinal microbiota, immunomodulation, anti-bacterial activities, and antiviral infection. However, they have received lesser attention than 2'-fucosyllactose. As precursors, LNT and LNnT are connected to one or two fucosyl units through α1,2/3/4 glycosidic bonds, forming a series of compounds with complex structures. These complex fucosylated oligosaccharides can be biologically synthesized using enzymatic and cell factory approaches. Background: The occurrence of stroke in young people has risen significantly. This can easily lead to physical disabilities, swallowing difficulties, and cognitive impairment, among other issues, having a profound impact on families and society. Risk factors for stroke in young people differ from those for traditional stroke, with cannabis abuse emerging as a significant high-risk factor. However, the extent of the impact of cannabis abuse on the occurrence of stroke and the rate of disability in young people remains unclear. To clarify this issue and provide evidence supporting the primary prevention of stroke in young people, this systematic review and meta-analysis summarizes the latest findings from previous studies. Methods: A systematic search of PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases was conducted until April 2023. The review included observational studies comparing stroke risk estimates between cannabis abusers and non-users. Results: This review included six observational studies focusing on cannabis abuse, involving 119,284,152 participants. A significant association was found between cannabis abuse and an increased risk of stroke [OR = 1.14, 95% CI (1.08, 1.20)]. However, there was substantial heterogeneity among the studies (I 2 = 89%, p < 0.001). After adjusting for confounders such as smoking and alcohol abuse, we found a stronger association between cannabis abuse and stroke in young adults [OR = 1.21, 95% CI (1.12, 1.29)]. Subgroup analyses revealed no significant difference in stroke risk between ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes (p = 0.43). Conclusion: The results of our systematic review and meta-analysis showed that cannabis abuse has a more significant effect on the occurrence of stroke in young people; however, it was not possible to distinguish whether cannabis abuse is more likely to cause ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke. Further research is needed to explore the impact of different drug types, dosages, and behaviors on stroke risk. Bisphenol A (BPA), a known endocrine disruptor, is commonly used in food containers and packaging. Recently, alternatives such as bisphenol AF (BPAF), bisphenol B (BPB), and bisphenol E (BPE) have been introduced to replace BPA. However, these substitutes have been reported to exhibit toxicity levels similar to BPA. In this study, we developed and validated a method for the analysis of trace bisphenols (BPA, BPAF, BPB, and BPE) in food using immunoaffinity column (IAC) clean-up. The method demonstrated satisfactory accuracy and precision. We applied this validated method to analyze 56 carbonated beverage samples and 30 canned tuna samples. In the carbonated beverages, average concentrations of BPA and BPAF were 0.4 and 0.2 μg kg−1, respectively. In canned tuna, BPA and BPAF were found at average concentrations of 22.2 and 0.7 μg kg−1, respectively, while BPB and BPE were not detected in any samples. Estimated exposure levels ranged from 0.13 to 0.18 ng kg bw−1 day−1 in the general population and from 205.2 to 232.0 ng kg bw−1 day−1 among consumers. As human activities continue to increase, the production and utilisation of plastics have become pervasive, leading to a surplus of plastic waste in the environment. This has turned the terrestrial ecosystem, encompassing soil, into a significant receptacle for the growing accumulation and discharge of plastic waste. Thus, the objective of this study is to investigate the occurrence, relationships, sources and pollution levels of microplastics in urban soils from different land use activities in Cyberjaya, Malaysia. Surface soil samples were collected from land uses (i.e., vacant areas, residential areas, commercial areas, construction areas and roadways). These surface soil samples were analysed for microplastic occurrence using density separation, microscopy and spectroscopy methods. The microplastics particles were analysed for size, colour and shape. Selected microplastics particles were also analysed for its plastics polymers using Fourier‐Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. Microplastics occurrence ranged from 0.3 to 1.5 particle/kg, with the highest average occurrence in the construction area (0.69 particle/kg) and lowest in the vacant area (0.33 particle/kg). Microplastics particle size was shortest in commercial areas (586.08 μm) and longest in vacant areas (793.78 μm). There were no similarities between microplastics occurrence and particle size across these different land use activities, suggesting that the microplastics occurrence in urban soils depends on external disturbances during each land use activity. Significant correlation between microplastic particle size and temperature (r2 = 0.517) showed that each land use activity is influenced by external disturbances. The Igeo values showed that the microplastics pollution level in urban soils is classified as uncontaminated to moderately contaminated. Microplastic particles in urban soils were found in various shapes (i.e., fragments, films and fibres) and colours (i.e., transparent, grey, blue, red, green, purple, black, white and yellow) along with plastic polymer types (i.e., ABS, PET, PP, PE and PS) due to traffic volume, tyre wear, mismanaged plastic waste and degradation rate. Long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays can result in skin photoaging, which is primarily characterized by dryness, roughness, pigmentation, and a loss of elasticity. However, the clinical drugs commonly employed to treat photoaged skin often induce adverse effects on the skin. Anthocyanins (ACNs) are water-soluble pigments occurring abundantly in various flowers, fruits, vegetables, and grains and exhibiting a range of biological activities. Studies have demonstrated that ACNs contribute to the repair of photoaged skin due to their diverse biological characteristics and minimal side effects. Evidence suggests that the stability of ACNs can be enhanced through encapsulation or combination with other substances to improve their bioavailability and permeability, ultimately augmenting their efficacy in repairing photoaged skin. A growing body of research utilizing cell lines, animal models, and clinical studies has produced compelling data demonstrating that ACNs mitigate skin photoaging by reducing oxidative stress, alleviating the inflammatory response, improving collagen synthesis, alleviating DNA damage, and inhibiting pigmentation. This review introduces sources of ACNs while systematically summarizing their application forms as well as mechanisms for repairing photoaged skin. Additionally, it explores the potential role of ACNs in developing functional foods. Background: Lyme borreliosis is the most frequent zoonotic disease in the northern hemisphere and is transmitted by ticks of the genus Ixodes. Although many people are bitten by ticks in private yards, our understanding of the factors associated with their presence in these areas remains limited. To address this gap, we used a citizen science approach to identify the local and landscape features associated with tick presence in yards. Methods: This study was conducted near Nancy, a city in northeastern France, from 2020 to 2022. Citizen scientists collected ticks in their yard on a single event (n = 185) and measured 13 yard features. Additionally, we computed 11 features related to the landscape composition and spatial configuration surrounding these yards. Using generalized linear mixed models, we determined the yard and landscape features associated with the presence of ticks and nymphal Ixodes ricinus (hereafter nymphs), the life stage, and species that mostly bite humans. Results: Despite a low density, ticks were found in 32% of the yards, including yards in urbanized areas. At the transect level, the likelihood of finding a nymph was nearly three times higher in transects shaded by vegetation compared to those in open areas, with no relationship between nymph occurrence and transect location or grass height. At the yard level, the occurrence of ticks and nymphs was related to both yard and landscape characteristics. Nymph and tick occurrence were more than twice as high in yards with signs of deer and a wood/brush pile compared to those without these characteristics, and increased with the connectivity of vegetation areas and the percentage of forest areas in the landscape. Conclusions: Our study reveals that private yards across an urbanization gradient are locations of tick exposure with tick presence linked to both yard and landscape factors. Introduction: Road Traffic Accidents (RTAs) can develop Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) due to emotional trauma, which significantly affects the quality of life. Despite satisfactory psychological recovery for many RTA victims, a notable percentage of survivors continue to live with PTSD without diagnosis or treatment. In India, the rising number of RTAs necessitates research into their psychological impacts to inform healthcare strategies and interventions. Aim: To assess the prevalence of PTSD symptoms among RTA survivors and explore the association between PTSD and sociodemographic and clinical variables. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted and data was collected from selected trauma centres in Gujarat state, India, from April to May 2024. The study involved 380 participants who had experienced RTAs within 30-40 days prior to data collection. Data collection employed an interviewer-administered questionnaire with two sections: a demographic and clinical questionnaire and the PTSD Checklist (PCL-5) for PTSD symptom assessment. The PCL-5 is a 20-item tool, with scores ranging from 0 to 80, where a score of =33 indicates PTSD symptoms. Data were analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.0, employing descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, and Confidence Intervals (CI) to determine the significance of associations at a p-value<0.05 level. Results: The prevalence of PTSD symptoms among RTA survivors was 46.3%, with a mean±SD PTSD score of 29.41±10.68. The highest rates of PTSD were observed among younger individuals {18-25 years, 55 (52.4%)} and females 43 (47.3%). Education (p-value=0.027) and monthly income (p-value=0.011) were significantly associated with higher PTSD prevalence. Among clinical variables, the type of vehicle involved in the accident was associated with PTSD prevalence (p-value=0.012). Conclusion: The prevalence of PTSD symptoms among RTA survivors was 46.3%. Lower education levels, lower income, and involvement in two or three-wheeler accidents were significantly associated with a higher prevalence of PTSD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The European Commission asked EFSA to update its 2012 risk assessment on brominated phenols and their derivatives in food, focusing on five bromophenols and one derivative: 2,4,6‐tribromophenol (2,4,6‐TBP), 2,4‐dibromophenol (2,4‐DBP), 4‐bromophenol (4‐BP), 2,6‐dibromophenol (2,6‐DBP), tetrabrominated bisphenol S (TBBPS), tetrabromobisphenol S bismethyl ether (TBBPS‐BME). Based on the overall evidence, the CONTAM Panel considered in vivo genotoxicity of 2,4,6‐TBP to be unlikely. Effects in liver and kidney were considered as the critical effects of 2,4,6‐tribromophenol (2,4,6‐TBP) in studies in rats. A BMDL10 of 353 mg/kg body weight (bw) per day for kidney papillary necrosis in male rats was identified and was selected as the reference point for the risk characterisation. The derivation of a health‐based guidance value was not considered appropriate due to major limitations in the toxicological database. Instead, the margin of exposure (MOE) approach was applied to assess possible health concerns. Around 78,200 analytical results for 2,4,6‐TBP in food were used to estimate dietary exposure for the European population. Considering the resulting MOE values, all far above an MOE of 6000 that does not raise a health concern, and accounting for the uncertainties affecting the exposure and hazard assessments, the CONTAM Panel concluded with at least 95% probability that the current dietary exposure to 2,4,6‐TBP does not raise a health concern. Due to lack of occurrence data, no risk assessment could be performed for breastfed or formula‐fed infants. No risk characterisation could be performed for any of the other brominated phenols and derivatives included in the assessment, due to lack of data both on the toxicity and occurrence. Background: Annually, 3-8 million infants are born with congenital anomalies worldwide, ranging from 3% to 7% of births in different countries. This study aimed to investigate the nationwide epidemiological features of birth defects in Iran. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in six major regions across Iran. The data sources were the maternity facilities affiliated with regional universities of medical sciences. All children were examined by obstetricians, pediatricians, or midwives at birth, and newborns were followed until discharge from the facility for health status, maturity, and congenital defects. Results: A total of 138,643 births were registered in the maternity facilities across the study regions. Among these newborns, 3,458 cases were diagnosed with congenital anomalies, representing an overall prevalence rate of 249.4 per 10 000 births (95% CI: 241.2-257.8). Genital organ anomalies exhibited the highest rates of defects in the country with 92.7 per 10 000 births (95% CI: 86.4-98.9), followed by limb anomalies at 83.3 per 10 000 births (95% CI: 77.4-89.3). The prevalence of respiratory system, chromosomal, and urinary tract anomalies was less than 10 per 10 000 births. Conclusion: Until a national registry for congenital anomalies is established, this study provides essential data on the magnitude of the health problems caused by congenital anomalies in Iran. Two subspecies of the Yellow-throated Woodland Warbler Phylloscopus ruficapilla (family Phylloscopidae) have been recognised in South Africa based on the extent and intensity of yellow colouration. Our previous multi-locus population genetic survey across much of the Eastern Cape and southern KwaZulu-Natal provinces, conducted from 2017 to 2023, revealed a single homogenous regional population. That finding, derived from 93 individuals sampled from nine sites—six northeast of the Great Kei River (n = 72) and three to the southwest (n = 21)—did not support a subspecies boundary near the Great Kei River. Here, using 188 publicly archived photographic records for this species in South Africa, we show that the phenotypes of both subspecies are present on either side of this divide. The observed genetic homogeneity and lack of clear phenotypic vicariance suggest that P. ruficapilla is more dispersive than currently appreciated, and that the plumage-based subspecies may not represent significant population-level differences. Cobalt is a critical and strategic metal mainly found as associated element in several types of deposits, of which skarn‐type deposits are the major sources. Han‐Xing type skarn iron deposit, having high grade iron ore and associated cobalt, is a typical skarn‐type iron ore in China. But the complete recovery and exploitation of cobalt are restricted because of the lower grade of related cobalt and the dearth of prior research on its occurrence condition and enrichment mechanism. In this paper, pyrite from five typical ore deposits in the Han‐Xing area was studied by using electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and laser‐ablation inductively‐coupled‐plasma mass‐spectrometry (LA–ICP–MS) techniques to decipher the occurrence state and enrichment mechanism of associated cobalt in skarn‐type iron deposits. The results show that Co2+ replaces Fe2+ in pyrite through isomorphism. The distribution of cobalt in pyrite from different deposits varies greatly, that is, in the Xishimen iron deposit, the cobalt content is comparatively enriched in the pyrite's core. In contrast, in other deposits, the cobalt content is concentrated in the pyrite's rims, where it can be up to 1000 times higher than in the core. The cobalt mineralization in Han‐Xing area can be divided into several stages. The sulphur element of sulphide is mainly derived from evaporite, while cobalt mineralization occurred in the early stage with pyrite formation or in the late stage by metasomatism/cementation of Co‐rich ore‐forming fluid. The magma assimilated with the Ordovician evaporite not only promoted iron mineralization, but also became the main controlling factor for cobalt enrichment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Zearalenone, a prominent mycotoxin produced by Fusarium spp., ubiquitously contaminates cereal grains and animal feedstuffs. The thermal stability of zearalenone creates serious obstacles for traditional removal methods, which may introduce new safety issues, or reducing nutritional quality. In contrast, biological technologies provide appealing benefits such as easy to apply and effective, with low toxicity byproducts. Thus, this review aims to describe the occurrence of zearalenone in cereals and cereal-based feedstuffs in the recent 5 years, outline the rules and regulations regarding zearalenone in the major countries, and discuss the recent developments of biological methods for controlling zearalenone in cereals and cereal-based feedstuffs. Background and Aims: The risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) occurrence following antiviral therapy in patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC) remains unclear. The current study aims to compare: (1) the HCC occurrence rate following sustained virological response (SVR) versus non-response (NR); (2) the HCC occurrence rate following direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy versus interferon (IFN)-based therapy, and (3) the HCC occurrence rate in SVR patients with or without cirrhosis. Methods: A search was performed for articles published between January 2017 and July 2022. Studies were included if they assessed HCC occurrence rate in CHC patients following anti-HCV therapy. Random effects meta-analysis was used to synthesize the results from individual studies. Results: A total of 23 studies including 29,395 patients (IFN-based = 6, DAA = 17; prospective = 10, retrospective = 13) were included in the review. HCC occurrence was significantly lower in CHC with SVR (1.54 per 100 person-years (py, 95% CI 1.52, 1.57) than those in non-responders (7.80 py, 95% CI 7.61, 7.99). Stratified by HCV treatment regimens, HCC occurrence following SVR was 1.17 per 100 py (95% CI 1.11, 1.22) and 1.60 per 100 py (95% CI 1.58, 1.63) in IFN- and DAA treatment-based studies. HCC occurrence was 0.85 per 100 py (95% CI 0.85, 0.86) in the non-cirrhosis population and rose to 2.47 per 100 py (95% CI 2.42, 2.52) in the cirrhosis population. Further meta-regression analysis showed that treatment types were not associated with a higher HCC occurrence rate, while cirrhosis status was an important factor of HCC occurrence rate. Conclusion: HCC occurrence was significantly lower in the SVR population than in the NR population. HCC risk following SVR occurred three times more frequently in patients with cirrhosis than patients without cirrhosis. This work examined the occurrence characteristics and ecological risks of 31 antibiotics across five classes and seven ARGs in the surface waters of Gaoyou Lake. A total of 27 antibiotics, spanning four classes, were detected in the surface waters of Gaoyou Lake, with an overall concentration ranging from 57.5 to 114 ng/L and an average of 78.8 ng/L. Sulfonamide antibiotics exhibited the highest average concentration at 32.7 ng/L. Spatial analysis revealed that antibiotic concentration levels in the western region of the lake were higher than those in other areas. Similarly, ARGs were most abundant in this area, with sulfonamide ARGs demonstrating a notably higher mean abundance than other ARGs. Correlation analysis revealed strong positive associations between sul1 and several antibiotics, including sulfadimidine, sulfamethoxazole, ciprofloxacin, lincomycin, clindamycin, erythromycin, and intl1 (P < 0.05), with intra-group correlations among sulfonamide ARGs exceeding those between different ARG groups. Ecological risk assessment indicated that erythromycin and sulfamethoxazole presented medium risks, whereas roxithromycin, azithromycin, and lincomycin were associated with low risks to aquatic organisms. The ecological risk proportions across monitoring sites were primarily low (10.6%) and moderate (16.7%), with no high-risk areas identified and 72.7% presenting no risk. Atrazine, a herbicide used for controlling broadleaf weeds, has been one of the predominant pollutants constituting 80–90% of detection frequency in the samples collected from rivers, estuaries, oceans, sediments, agricultural lands, and crops. The fate of atrazine is highly unpredictable depending on the physio-chemical, physiological and geographical conditions. Range of metabolites such as deethylatrazine (DEA), deisopropyl atrazine (DIA), and didealkylatrzine (DDA) are formed as a result of biotic as well as abiotic degradation process in the environment following cyanuric acid, ammelide, CO2 and NH3 are formed as final products. Atrazine degraded products has shown more hazardous nature than the parent compound, atrazine. Atrazine is banned in Italy, India, Germany and European union but widely used in China, Australian, Canadian and US agriculture. To date, reviews evaluating the assimilation of synerigistic treatment technologies and comparative degration mechanism have not been highlighted. This work focuses on (1) the spatiotemporal distribution of atrazine and its metabolites globally and the factors governing it (2) provides an in-depth discussion about the various studies showing the toxicity of atrazine in microbes, cattle, human, terrestrial and aquatic organisms; (3) discusses the contaminants of emerging concern which are continuously replacing atrazine like terbuthylazine and their intermediate compounds posing more risk to wildlife and humans; (4) summarises the different treatment technologies which have been predominantly applied for the removal of atrazine in water and soil systems and also discusses the synergistic or mutualistic aspects of treatment methods in degrading atrazine. Birds play a critical role as a reservoir for enteric bacteria Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica. This study aimed to investigate prevalence of E. coli and S. enterica and occurrence of their antibiotic resistance (ABR) genes in selected wild and captive bird species in Pakistan. E. coli and S. enterica were isolated from fecal samples of birds and identified by phenotypic, biochemical, and molecular characterization of ABR genes by PCR. E. coli colonies appeared circular and dark purple on EMB agar media plates while S. enterica colonies were small, circular, and red on SS agar media plates. E. coli and S. enterica isolates were found resistant to amoxicillin, ciprofloxacin, and sulfamethoxazole, while sensitive against doxycycline, gentamycin, and tetracycline. E. coli isolates showed positive results in catalase, indole, and methyl red tests while S. enterica isolates showed negative in citrate, lactose, and urease tests. E. coli and S. enterica strains were 100% and 99% identical, respectively, to previously isolated E. coli and S. enterica strains. Overall prevalence of E. coli and S. enterica was recorded as 16.55% and 2.7% respectively. Captive pigeons exhibited maximum 19.1% and 3.3% occurrence of blaTEM of E. coli and S. enterica respectively, 18.3% and 2.5% of sul3 respectively in peafowls, and 23.3% and 3.3% of qnrA respectively in captive pigeons. It has been concluded that captive birds in districts with lower elevation levels have a higher prevalence of E. coli and S. enterica at high temperatures compared to wild birds in districts with higher elevation levels. Trichlorobenzenes (TCBs), comprising the isomers 1,2,3-, 1,2,4-, and 1,3,5-TCB, disrupt metabolic processes by inducing liver enzymes involved in xenobiotic metabolism, suggesting a broad toxicological impact. Specifically, exposure to TCBs is associated with significant organ-specific toxicities, such as increased liver and kidney weights in rodents and cytotoxic effects in mammalian cells, which include DNA damage without metabolic activation. Used extensively in industrial and agricultural sectors, TCBs are prevalent pollutants in various ecosystems, including air, food, surface water, groundwater, sediment, soil, and sewage. This is a concern because of their tendency to accumulate in lipid-containing tissues of animals and humans and potentially serious risks to human health and ecosystems. Information showing the presence of TCBs in food, drinking water, and even human breast milk underscores the need for ongoing assessment of the extent of these contaminants in food to measure the potential exposure to these chemicals. TCBs are extracted from various food sample matrices, and then instrumental analysis is performed, typically gas chromatography (GC) coupled with a variety of detectors. In the past 40 years, accumulating evidence suggested that autistic individuals are at an increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. This study examined the occurrence of various potential risk factors for lifetime suicidal behavior and suicidal thoughts in the past month in a Dutch cohort (Netherlands Autism Register) of autistic individuals using the Suicidal Behaviors Questionnaire (SBQ-R) and the Suicidal Ideation Attributes Scale (SIDAS). Our results show that the majority (80%) of the initial sample (N = 1164) had thought about or attempted suicide in their lifetime, of which 15% had attempted suicide. In the final sample (n = 421), backward linear regression analyses identified the following predictors for suicidal behavior: psychiatric comorbidity, loneliness, and higher number of autistic traits, F (3, 240) = 21.22, p < 0.001, with R 2 of 0.21. For suicidal thoughts in the past month, psychiatric comorbidity and a higher number of autistic traits were significant predictors, F (2, 241) = 20.34, p < 0.001, with R 2 of 0.14. In sum, additional risk markers for suicidal thoughts and behaviors in autistic individuals (e.g. number of autistic traits) should be considered when assessing the suicide risk in autistic individuals. Future research should focus on adapting suicide prevention interventions for autistic individuals, such as addressing loneliness as one of the intervention strategies. Over the past few years, more and more research is showing that many autistic people are at an increased risk for suicide. In this study, we asked participants from the Netherlands Autism Register, which is longitudinal register including individuals with autism, about their possible experiences with thoughts and feelings about suicide. Specifically, we looked at whether these thoughts and feelings in their lifetime and in the past month were related to various factors (such as their age, gender, and having psychiatric disorder diagnoses). We found that 80% of the participants had experienced thoughts about or even attempted to take their own life at least once throughout their lifetime. Furthermore, in a subgroup of participants, we found that the presence of a psychiatric disorder diagnosis, feelings of loneliness, and a higher number of autistic traits were associated with experiencing suicidal thoughts and feelings in their lifetime. For those who experienced these suicidal thoughts in the past month, we found that having (multiple) psychiatric disorder diagnoses and a higher number of autistic traits were related to more severe and frequent thoughts about suicide in the past month. Our findings show that additional factors in autistic individuals should be considered when assessing the suicide risk, and it brings us one step closer to understanding why suicide is more common for autistic people. The characterization of external or mental occurrence " is a famous criterion for dividing rational things into "primary, secondary logical, and secondary philosophical." This criterion, in addition to being semantically ambiguous, implies a two-sided meaning, i.e. relying on "accidentoccurrence" or "quality-qualified," while such duality is not hidden in the concept of "intelligible" and especially "first intelligibles". The division of intelligible things into primary and secondary has another more precedent criterion, which is the precedence and lateness in rationality. In this criterion, primary intelligible things refer to essential concepts and external concomitants, and secondary intelligible things refer to logical concepts and internal concomitants, but philosophical concepts do not have a clear place in this classification. Shihab al-Din Suhrawardi placed philosophical concepts under secondary intelligibles. After him, some others opposed the exclusive enumeration of philosophical intelligible things, but the thinking of Asalat alMahwiyat ( fundamentality of whatness ) led to placing these intelligible things in a limbo of external and mental attributes and deviating from the old criterion. Mulla Sadra considered mental attributes and external concomitants impossible and proved the externality of philosophical concepts. Of course, considering the various meanings of "existence," its position in the first and second rationality differ. Existence in the sense of "truth of existence" is not secondary rational. However, since externality is associated with existence and it is not possible to consider the "general and abstract concept of existence" as the same as external existence, and this meaning is derived from the nature of rationality, it is secondary rational. Background: The amount of tissue trauma within second‐degree perineal tears varies widely. Therefore, subcategorization of second‐degree tears and a better understanding of their occurrence and risk factors are needed. The aim of this study was to assess the occurrence of perineal tears when second‐degree tears were subcategorized. Furthermore, we aimed to assess the association between variables related to perineal anatomy and other potential risk factors, with second‐degree tear subcategories. Methods: This prospective cohort study included 880 primiparous and multiparous women giving birth to one child vaginally. Perineal tears were categorized using the classification system recommended by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. In addition, second‐degree tears were subcategorized as 2A, 2B, or 2C according to the percentage of damage to the perineal body. Selected variables related to perineal anatomy were as follows: length of genital hiatus; perineal body length; and previous perineal trauma. Risk factors for second‐degree tear subcategories were analyzed using a multinominal regression model. Results: Perineal tears occurred as follows: first‐degree: 35.6% (n = 313), 2A: 16.3% (n = 143), 2B: 9.1% (n = 80), 2C: 6.6% (n = 58), and third‐ or fourth‐degree: 1.6% (n = 14). In total, 169/880 participants underwent an episiotomy. When episiotomies were excluded, the risk for 2B, or 2C tears increased with smaller genital hiatus, larger perineal body, previous perineal trauma, primiparity, higher gestational age, instrumental vaginal delivery and fetal presentation other than occiput anterior. Conclusion: The occurrence of second‐degree tear subcategories was 16.3% for 2A tears, 9.1% for 2B tears, and 6.6% for 2C tears. A survey of plant parasitic nematodes was carried out in 650 garlic fields in Korea from 2020 to 2022. Migratory endoparasite nematodes (Ditylenchus sp.) were recovered from 6% of the garlic samples, with an average density of 494 individuals per garlic bulb. The morphological characteristics of males and females from the 2022 survey were very similar to D. destructor, but D. dipsaci was not found. The Korean population traits have a lateral field containing six incisures, and the posterior esophagus part overlaps the intestine dorsally. PCR and DNA sequencing were performed for the D2/D3 region of the ribosomal DNA 28S and the ITS region, and the phylogenetic analysis strongly supports the monophyly of D. destructor. This is the first report of D. destructor parasitizing garlic in the Republic of Korea. In Korea, due to changes in agricultural or environmental conditions, the most damaging potential PPNs changed from D. dipsaci to D. destructor in garlic cultivation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gram-negative bacilli Klebsiella pneumoniae are among the most important pathogens responsible for healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). These bacteria often have high pathogenic and epidemic potential, contributing to infection outbreaks worldwide. K. pneumoniae is part of the natural microbiota of humans. At the same time, as an opportunistic microorganism, when the host organism is weakened, it can cause serious infections such as pneumonia, urinary tract infections, septic infections and intra-organ abscesses. Widespread distribution in nature and exceptional adaptability provide K. pneumoniae with the opportunity to master new niches in the hospital environment, which poses a threat to hospitalized patients. Also, the bacteria are increasingly causing life-threatening infections in the non-hospital environment. The pathogenicity of K. pneumoniae is determined by the presence of many virulence factors such as capsular polysaccharide (CPS, K antigen), lipopolysaccharid (LPS, O antigen), fimbrial and non-fimbrial adhesins, siderophores (aero-bactin, enterobactin, salmochelin and yersiniabactin), heat-stabile and heat-labile enterotoxins, cytotoxins and biofilm-forming ability. Currently, hypervirulent strains of K. pneumoniae (hvKp) equipped with new virulence traits constitute a significant danger. Background/Objectives: Intrauterine adhesion (IUA) is characterized by endometrial fibrocyte hyperplasia. The LIN28B gene is associated with many proliferative diseases. However, its association with IUA is entirely unknown. We hypothesized that LIN28B gene polymorphisms are responsible for IUA susceptibility after curettage abortion. Methods: In this genetic association study, We genotyped two common polymorphisms (rs369065 C>T and rs314280 A>G) in 107 patients with IUA and 270 controls without IUA after curettage abortion from a Chinese population between July 2022 and May 2023 and analyzed their associations with IUA risk using multiple logistic regression models. Results: The carriers of genotype rs314280 AA of the LIN28B gene showed an increased risk of IUA (AOR [adjusted odds ratio] = 2.12, 95% CI [confidence interval] = 1.151–3.903), compared to GG+GA genotypes. Further stratification analyses showed that the deleterious role of the rs314280 AA genotype was more evident in patients with fewer than four pregnancies (AOR = 2.740, 95% CI = 1.355–5.540), fewer than two births (AOR = 2.676, 95% CI = 1.300–5.509), and fibrous (AOR = 2.082, 95% CI = 1.084–3.997) and muscular adhesions (AOR = 3.887, 95% CI = 1.116–13.540). However, the rs369065 T>C polymorphism of the LIN28B gene was not significantly associated with the occurrence of IUA. Conclusions: The rs314280 AA genotype of the LIN28B gene is associated with an increased risk of IUA in patients after curettage abortion, especially in those with fewer pregnancies or parities and higher disease severity. Introduction: Road Traffic Accidents (RTAs) can develop Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) due to emotional trauma, which significantly affects the quality of life. Despite satisfactory psychological recovery for many RTA victims, a notable percentage of survivors continue to live with PTSD without diagnosis or treatment. In India, the rising number of RTAs necessitates research into their psychological impacts to inform healthcare strategies and interventions. Aim: To assess the prevalence of PTSD symptoms among RTA survivors and explore the association between PTSD and socio-demographic and clinical variables. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted and data was collected from selected trauma centres in Gujarat state, India, from April to May 2024. The study involved 380 participants who had experienced RTAs within 30-40 days prior to data collection. Data collection employed an interviewer-administered questionnaire with two sections: a demographic and clinical questionnaire and the PTSD Checklist (PCL-5) for PTSD symptom assessment. The PCL-5 is a 20-item tool, with scores ranging from 0 to 80, where a score of ≥33 indicates PTSD symptoms. Abstract Background Lyme borreliosis is the most frequent zoonotic disease in the northern hemisphere and is transmitted by ticks of the genus Ixodes. Although many people are bitten by ticks in private yards, our understanding of the factors associated with their presence in these areas remains limited. To address this gap, we used a citizen science approach to identify the local and landscape features associated with tick presence in yards. Methods This study was conducted near Nancy, a city in northeastern France, from 2020 to 2022. Citizen scientists collected ticks in their yard on a single event (n = 185) and measured 13 yard features. Additionally, we computed 11 features related to the landscape composition and spatial configuration surrounding these yards. Using generalized linear mixed models, we determined the yard and landscape features associated with the presence of ticks and nymphal Ixodes ricinus (hereafter nymphs), the life stage, and species that mostly bite humans. Results Despite a low density, ticks were found in 32% of the yards, including yards in urbanized areas. At the transect level, the likelihood of finding a nymph was nearly three times higher in transects shaded by vegetation compared to those in open areas, with no relationship between nymph occurrence and transect location or grass height. At the yard level, the occurrence of ticks and nymphs was related to both yard and landscape characteristics. Nymph and tick occurrence were more than twice as high in yards with signs of deer and a wood/brush pile compared to those without these characteristics, and increased with the connectivity of vegetation areas and the percentage of forest areas in the landscape. Conclusions Our study reveals that private yards across an urbanization gradient are locations of tick exposure with tick presence linked to both yard and landscape factors. These findings emphasize the importance of public awareness regarding tick exposure in yards and provide crucial insights for future public health prevention campaigns.

Antibacterial agents like triclosan (TCS, 5-chloro-2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)phenol) and triclocarban (TCC, 3-(4-chlorophenyl)-1-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)urea are commonly found in everyday household and personal care products. Both compounds are widely distributed in the environment, acting as potential sources of contamination to ecological safety and human health problems such as algal growth-inhibiting effects; bioaccumulation in algae; endocrine-disrupting effects; development of microbial resistance, and formation of toxic degradable products. Environmentalists are increasingly concerned about the emergence of these micro-organic pollutants in the environment. This review paper focuses on the current state of knowledge, occurrence, effects, detection, and removal techniques for triclosan and triclocarban in the environment. People are exposed to these antibacterial agents when transported from wastewater treatment plants, air, dust, household products, and personal care products. These exposures lead to bioaccumulation in human tissue and biomagnification in the food chain. Surveys have revealed that TCC and TCS under sunlight formed toxic and persistent constituents like chlorinated phenols, methyl triclosan (MTCS), and biphenyl ethers. Different analytical approaches have been used to detect and degrade these compounds to ensure their complete removal in the environment but are found inadequate to effectively eliminate TCS and TCC. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have shown to be promising in successfully breaking down TCS and TCC, considering material and energy consumption and emission of carbon (IV) oxide. Therefore, robust strategies such as electrochemical and nanomaterial methods should be implemented to determine and sequester TCS and TCC in the environment. • The occurrence of 77 PPCPs and EDCs in Chinese surface waters was reviewed. • PPCPs and EDCs pollution was primarily detected in Chinese surface waters around densely populated and highly industrialized regions. • PCPs and EDCs showed overall higher risks than pharmaceuticals in Chinese surface waters. • Five high risk and six medium risk chemicals were prioritized in Chinese surface waters. The continuous and rapid increase of chemical pollution in surface waters has become a pressing and widely recognized global concern. As emerging contaminants (ECs) in surface waters, pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), and endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) have attracted considerable attention due to their wide occurrence and potential threat to human health. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of the occurrence and risks of ECs in Chinese surface waters is urgently required. This study summarizes and assesses the environmental occurrence concentrations and ecological risks of 42 pharmaceuticals, 15 personal care products (PCPs), and 20 EDCs frequently detected in Chinese surface waters. The ECs were primarily detected in China's densely populated and highly industrialized regions. Most detected PPCPs and EDCs had concentrations between ng/L to µg/L, whereas norfloxacin, caffeine, and erythromycin had relatively high contamination levels, even exceeding 2000 ng/L. Risk evaluation based on the risk quotient method revealed that 34 PPCPs and EDCs in Chinese surface waters did not pose a significant risk, whereas 4-nonylphenol, 4- tert -octylphenol, 17α-ethinyl estradiol, 17β-estradiol, and triclocarban did. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the occurrence and associated hazards of typical PPCPs and EDCs in Chinese surface waters over the past decade, and will aid in the regulation and control of these ECs in Chinese surface waters. Abstract Background Blastocystis, a widely distributed zoonotic protozoan infecting both humans and numerous animals, remains poorly understood with its potential medical and veterinary significance. This study examined the molecular occurrence and genetic variation of Blastocystis in children and calves in Bangladesh to explore cross-species transmission and disease burden. Methods In total, 998 DNA samples were investigated, comprising 299 stool DNA from children and 699 fecal DNA from calves, using polymerase chain reaction and sequencing of the small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene. Results This study detected Blastocystis in 5.35% of the children and 14.74% of the calves. While slight variations in occurrence rates were observed across different study variables, none were statistically significant. The occurrence was highest among children under 5 years and calves aged 1–3 months. Regarding breed, the Holstein Friesian cross and the Jersey cross exhibited higher rates of infection. Conversely, occurrences were lower among children and calves in Gazipur district. The remaining parameters displayed nearly equivalent percentages of Blastocystis. The subtypes identified in children included ST1, ST3, and ST4, with ST1 comprising 50% of them. ST3 and ST4 were also found in calves, alongside ST10 (55.34%) being the most prevalent. Other subtypes found in calves were ST14, ST21, and ST24–ST26. Conclusions This study found that Blastocystis is more common in calves than in children in Bangladesh, with genetic diversity of nine subtypes. The common occurrence of identical variants of two subtypes in both populations suggests potential zoonotic transmission, highlighting the necessity for further molecular investigations and comprehensive measures within the One Health framework to mitigate public health risks.

Abstract Background Describing spatio-temporal occurrence and habitat characteristics of Aedes mosquito larvae is crucial for the control of Aedes borne viral diseases. This study assessed spatio-temporal abundance and habitat characteristics of Aedes larvae in the Southern Afar Region, Ethiopia. Methods Immature mosquitoes were surveyed in Awash Sebat, Awash Arba, and Werer towns of the Southern Afar Region once per month from May 2022 to April 2023. Larvae and pupae surveys were carried out along the available water-holding containers. The collected larvae/pupae were reared to adults and identified by species/genus morphologically. The physical and chemical properties of the habitats were also characterized. Results A total of 9099 Aedes larvae/pupae were collected, of which 53.6% (4875) were from Awash Sebat, 29.5% (2687) from Awash Arba and 16.9% (1537) from Werer. Water-holding tyres harboured the highest number of Aedes larvae/pupae followed by water-storage drums. All the Aedes larvae/pupae reared to adults were morphologically identified as Aedes aegypti. The overall Container Index was 47.28%, House Index 18.19%, Breteau Index 59.94% and Pupal Index 171.94. Phthalic acid esters or phthalates are widely used as plasticizers in various industrial plastic products. Among various phthalates, Dibutyl phthalate(DBP) and Di-(2-ehtylhexyl) phthalate(DEHP) are the most frequently used phthalates. As the risks of several phthalates have been studied, the use of phthalates is being restricted in many countries. Several studies have revealed that phthalates ubiquitously exist in air and water environments. It is interesting to note that indoor phthalate concentrations were higher than those of outdoor in air environment. In water environment, while a significant amount of phthalates is removed from wastewater treatment plants, there is little difference among phthalate concentrations of tap water, bottled water, lake water and surface water. That means phthalates are not effectively removed from the drinking water treatment plants. There are regulations pertaining to phthalates in Korea, the USA, and the EU. Most regulations are mainly about the allowable amounts when plastic products are manufactured. In Korea, water regulation about phthalates stipulates the wastewater discharge concentration, while the USA water regulation about phthalates set the maximum allowable concentration in drinking water. However, in air, both Korea and the USA only designate phthalates as pollutants, and there is no regulation about the concentration of phthalates. Most studies used Gas Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS) for detecting phthalates. GC-MS can detect low concentrations of phthalates with precision and reliability, but it is time-consuming and requires expertise. Due to the nature of large footprint, it cannot be used to measure phthalates concentrations directly in situ. Biosensor is a portable technology that allows a rapid detection of target compounds in situ. While sensors that detect phthalates in water are well developed, sensors that detect phthalates in the atmosphere have been less thoroughly investigated in the studies. To effectively manage phthalates in indoor environments, more studies regarding atmospheric phthalate sensor technology may be needed.

We show for the first time the results of a study into the spatial distribution of birds in forests at the eastern edge of Europe (Republic of Tatarstan, Russia) and changes from early to late winter. A transect method was used to census randomly selected plots spread over a large geographical area in the winters 2018/9–2022/3. We used regression and ordination methods to assess the influence of key environmental factors on species richness, total density of birds, biological diversity, and the probabilities of occurrence of individual species. The most abundant bird species in early winter was the Willow Tit, and in the late winter was the Common Redpoll. Compared with the end of the 20th century, the number of wintering bird species has increased in the study area, likely due to climate warming. Species richness, total density, and the Shannon Index of diversity were higher in early winter than in late winter. Species richness and the Shannon Index were also higher at low elevations and in the west of the study region. Our research shows strong ecological-geographical differences in the preferences of individual bird species in the studied forests. However, almost without exception, birds had a higher probability of occurrence at lower elevation and toward the west.

Abstract The secretagogin (SCGN) was originally identified as a secreted calcium-binding protein present in the cytoplasm. Recent studies have found that SCGN has a close relationship with cancer. However, its role in the occurrence, progression, and prognosis of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) remains unclear. In this study, we utilized a mutual authentication method based on public databases and clinical samples to determine the role of SCGN in the progression and prognosis of ccRCC. Firstly, we comprehensively analyzed the expression characteristics of SCGN in ccRCC in several public databases. Subsequently, we systematically evaluated SCGN expression on 252 microarrays of ccRCC tissues from different grades. It was found that SCGN was absent in all the normal kidney tissues and significantly overexpressed in ccRCC tumor tissues. In addition, the expression level of SCGN gradually decreased with an increase in tumor grade, and the percentage of SCGN staining positivity over 50% was 86.7% (13/15) and 73.4% (58/79) in Grade1 and Grade2, respectively, while it was only 8.3% (12/144) in Grade3, and the expression of SCGN was completely absent in Grade4 (0/14) and distant metastasis group (0/4). Additionally, the expression of SCGN was strongly correlated with the patient's prognosis, with the higher the expression levels of SCGN being associated with longer overall survival and disease-free survival of patients. In conclusion, our results suggest that reduced expression of SCGN in cancer cells is correlated with the progression and prognosis of ccRCC.

Background: Blastocystis, a widely distributed zoonotic protozoan infecting both humans and numerous animals, remains poorly understood with its potential medical and veterinary significance. This study examined the molecular occurrence and genetic variation of Blastocystis in children and calves in Bangladesh to explore cross-species transmission and disease burden. Methods: In total, 998 DNA samples were investigated, comprising 299 stool DNA from children and 699 fecal DNA from calves, using polymerase chain reaction and sequencing of the small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene. Results: This study detected Blastocystis in 5.35% of the children and 14.74% of the calves. While slight variations in occurrence rates were observed across different study variables, none were statistically significant. The occurrence was highest among children under 5 years and calves aged 1–3 months. Regarding breed, the Holstein Friesian cross and the Jersey cross exhibited higher rates of infection. Conversely, occurrences were lower among children and calves in Gazipur district. The remaining parameters displayed nearly equivalent percentages of Blastocystis. The subtypes identified in children included ST1, ST3, and ST4, with ST1 comprising 50% of them. ST3 and ST4 were also found in calves, alongside ST10 (55.34%) being the most prevalent. Other subtypes found in calves were ST14, ST21, and ST24–ST26. Conclusions: This study found that Blastocystis is more common in calves than in children in Bangladesh, with genetic diversity of nine subtypes. The common occurrence of identical variants of two subtypes in both populations suggests potential zoonotic transmission, highlighting the necessity for further molecular investigations and comprehensive measures within the One Health framework to mitigate public health risks. Non-phthalate plasticizers are being increasingly used in commercial and consumer products, to replace phthalates. Among major non-phthalate plasticizer groups, we chose five alternative plasticizers of DEHA, DINCH, DEHTP, ATBC, and TOTM, and conducted a systematic literature review for current knowledge on their use and occurrences in major sources, and their exposure and endocrine outcomes in humans. Relevant articles published between January 2000 and December 2022 were identified from PubMed and Scopus search and analyzed. For occurrence, biomonitoring, and endocrine-related outcomes, 79, 73, and 14 studies were finally identified, respectively. The alternative plasticizers were widely used in food packaging, children's products, hygiene products, medical devices, and construction materials, and frequently detected in indoor dust. Food packaging materials and children's products were major sources of direct exposure to humans. Human exposure to alternative plasticizers is reported mostly via biomonitoring of urine. Urinary levels of DEHTP and DINCH metabolites were higher among infants, children, and pregnant women than in general adults. In humans, DEHTP, DINCH, or ATBC exposure were associated with sex hormone disruption and reproductive outcomes, but these associations varied by sex and age. This review showed that the use of and exposure to these alternative plasticizers have increased over time. Sesquiterpenoids constitute the largest subgroup of terpenoids that have numerous applications in pharmaceutical, flavor, and fragrance industries as well as biofuels. Bergamotenes, a type of bicyclic sesquiterpenes, are found in plants, insects, and fungi with α-trans-bergamotene as the most abundant compound. Bergamotenes and their related structures (Bergamotane sesquiterpenoids) have been shown to possess diverse biological activities such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive, cytotoxic, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, and insecticidal effects. However, studies on their biotechnological potential are still limited. This review compiles the characteristics of bergamotenes and their related structures in terms of occurrence, biosynthesis pathways, and biological activities. It further discusses their functionalities and potential applications in pharmaceutical, nutraceuticals, cosmeceuticals, and pest management sectors. The Carboniferous-Permian coal measure strata in the Qinshui Basin exhibit highly lithium (Li) enrichment, with substantial exploitation potential. To further explore the enrichment mechanism of lithium in coal measure strata, the No. 15 coal of the Taiyuan Formation from the Gaoping mine is taken as the research object, and its mineralogical and geochemistry characteristics are evaluated using optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, X-ray fluorescence, and infrared spectral. The results show that the No. 15 coal is semi-anthracite coal with low moisture, low ash, low volatility, and high sulfur. Organic macerals are primarily vitrinite, followed by inertinite, and liptinite is rare; the inorganic macerals (ash) are dominated by clay minerals (predominantly kaolinite, cookeite, illite, and NH4-illite), calcite, pyrite, quartz, siderite, gypsum, and zircon. The average Li content in the coal is 66.59 μg/g, with higher content in the coal parting (566.00 μg/g) and floor (396.00 μg/g). Lithium in coal occurs primarily in kaolinite, illite, cookeite, and is closely related to titanium-bearing minerals. In addition, Li in organic maceral may occur in liptinite. The No. 15 coal was formed in the coastal depositional system, and the deposition palaeoenvironment is primarily a wet–shallow water covered environment in open swamp facies; the plant tissue preservation index is poor, and aquatic or herbaceous plants dominate the plant type. The reducing environment with more terrestrial detritus, an arid climate, and strong hydrodynamic effects is favorable for Li enrichment in coal. Neonicotinoids (NEOs), the most widely used class of insecticides, are pervasive in the environment, eliciting concerns due to their hydrophilicity, persistence, and potential ecological risks. As the leading pesticide consumer, China shows significant regional disparities in NEO contamination. This review explores NEO distribution, sources, and toxic risks across China. The primary NEO pollutants identified in environmental samples include imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, and acetamiprid. In the north, corn cultivation represents the principal source of NEOs during wet seasons, while rice dominates in the south year-round. The high concentration levels of NEOs have been detected in the aquatic environment in the southern regions (130.25 ng/L), the urban river Sects. (157.66 ng/L), and the downstream sections of the Yangtze River (58.9 ng/L), indicating that climate conditions and urban pollution emissions are important drivers of water pollution. Neonicotinoids were detected at higher levels in agricultural soils compared to other soil types, with southern agricultural areas showing higher concentrations (average 27.21 ng/g) than northern regions (average 12.77 ng/g). Atmospheric NEO levels were lower, with the highest concentration at 1560 pg/m3. The levels of total neonicotinoid pesticides in aquatic environments across China predominantly exceed the chronic toxicity ecological threshold of 35 ng/L, particularly in the regions of Beijing and the Qilu Lake Basin, where they likely exceed the acute toxicity ecological threshold of 200 ng/L. In the future, efforts should focus on neonicotinoid distribution in agriculturally developed regions of Southwest China, while also emphasizing their usage in urban greening and household settings. Antibiotic contamination poses a significant global concern due to its far-reaching impact on public health and the environment. This comprehensive review delves into the prevalence of various antibiotic classes in environmental pollution and their interactions with natural ecosystems. Fluoroquinolones, macrolides, tetracyclines, and sulphonamides have emerged as prevalent contaminants in environmental matrices worldwide. The concentrations of these antibiotics vary across diverse environments, influenced by production practices, consumer behaviours, and socio-economic factors. Low- and low-middle-income countries face unique challenges in managing antibiotic contamination, with dominant mechanisms like hydrolysis, sorption, and biodegradation leading to the formation of toxic byproducts. Ecotoxicity reports reveal the detrimental effects of these byproducts on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, further emphasizing the gravity of the issue. Notably, monitoring the antibiotic parent compound alone may be inadequate for framing effective control and management strategies for antibiotic pollution. This review underscores the imperative of a comprehensive, multi-sectoral approach to address environmental antibiotic contamination and combat antimicrobial resistance. It also advocates for the development and implementation of tailored national action plans that consider specific environmental conditions and factors. Background and Aim: The purpose of the current study was to investigate the predictive value of hepatitis B core‐related antigen (HBcrAg) on the occurrence and recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science from database inception to April 6, 2023. Pooled hazard ratio (HR) or odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) was calculated for the occurrence and recurrence of HCC. Results: Of the 464 articles considered, 18 articles recruiting 10 320 patients were included. The pooled results showed that high serum HBcrAg level was an independent risk factor for the occurrence of HCC in CHB patients (adjusted HR = 3.12, 95% CI: 2.40–4.06, P < 0.001, I2 = 43.2%, P = 0.043; OR = 5.65, 95% CI: 3.44–5.82, P < 0.001, I2 = 0.00%, P = 0.42). Further subgroup analysis demonstrated that the predictive ability of HBcrAg for the occurrence of HCC is not influenced by the hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) status or the use of nucleoside/nucleotide analogs (NAs). In addition, our meta‐analysis also suggests that HBcrAg is a predictor of HCC recurrence (adjusted HR = 1.71, 95% CI: 1.26–2.32, P < 0.001, I2 = 7.89%, P = 0.031). Conclusions: For patients with CHB, serum HBcrAg may be a potential predictive factor for the occurrence of HCC, regardless of HBeAg status or NA treatment. Simple Summary: The Medog region in southeastern Tibet harbors diverse wildlife, yet our understanding of these mammals' species diversity, distribution, and conservation status remains inadequate. To address this, a camera-trapping survey was conducted in Gedang, Medog, spanning from April 2023 to May 2024. The study revealed 25 mammalian species across five orders and 14 families, including Endangered and Vulnerable species. Notably, the Gongshan muntjac's underrepresentation in the IUCN was addressed, and new insights into the coexistence of Himalayan red pandas and Chinese red pandas were documented. The White-cheeked macaque, Gongshan muntjac, and Himalayan serow were frequently detected with high RAI. However, the high detection of domestic dogs, livestock, and human disturbances may pose threats to wildlife. Conservation efforts are crucial to protect these mammals and maintain ecological balance in the region. The Medog in southeastern Tibet is home to a diverse range of wild animals. However, research on these mammals' species directories, distribution, and conservation status remains insufficient, despite their crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. The study carried out a camera-trapping survey to assess mammal biodiversity and the significance of mammal protection in their natural habitats in Gedang, Medog. Future directions and application prospects of the study for wildlife conservation in the southeastern Tibetan mountains were also discussed. The survey, spanning from April 2023 to May 2024, with 19,754 camera trap days, revealed 25 mammalian species across five orders and 14 families. Among these, four classified as Endangered, five as Vulnerable, two as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, nine were categorized as Critically Endangered or Endangered on the Red List of China's Vertebrates, and seven were China's national first-class key protected wildlife. The order Carnivora exhibited the highest diversity, comprising 12 species. Furthermore, the study filled the knowledge gap regarding the underrepresentation of Gongshan muntjac Muntiacus gongshanensis in IUCN and provided new insights into the recorded coexistence of the Himalayan red panda Ailurus fulgens and Chinese red panda Ailurus styani along the Yarlung Zangbo River for the first time, and also documented new upper elevation limits for four large to medium-sized species. Regarding the relative abundance indices (RAI) captured by camera traps, the most prevalent species identified was the White-cheeked macaque Macaca leucogenys, followed by the Gongshan muntjac and Himalayan serow Capricornis thar. The monitoring also captured a number of domestic dogs and livestock, as well as human disturbances. These findings underscore the importance of conserving these mammals and emphasize the need for conservation efforts to protect their habitats and reduce human activities that threaten their survival, thereby maintaining the ecological balance of the region. Fungal and mycotoxin control at a primary stage in the food chain is crucial to maintaining the nutritional quality of animal feed. The control of fungal and mycotoxins is one of the essential points that a good biosecurity program must establish to ensure the safe feeding and protection of animal and human health. Acquiring a comprehensive understanding of the role of mycotoxins is vital to identifying breaches of this control and enabling the performance of proper risk assessments and accurate risk management strategies. This study focused on the identification of regulated and emerging mycotoxins in agricultural fields and dairy farms through an analytical methodology by ultra high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QTrap-MS/MS). This allowed us to identify a Portuguese mycotoxin profile in the maize value chain for the first time. Regarding our occurrence data, mycotoxins were identified in all samples, namely seeds, flowering plants, grain and forage at harvest, maize silage, and animal feed. FBs and ENNB were highly present in all stages of the production cycle. This work offers an initial insight into a full screening of regulated and emerging mycotoxins within an important agricultural commodity. The high occurrence of these compounds points to the need to perform occurrence surveys from an integrative perspective to protect consumers' health, especially within food chains that provide various important staple foods worldwide. Background: Describing spatio-temporal occurrence and habitat characteristics of Aedes mosquito larvae is crucial for the control of Aedes borne viral diseases. This study assessed spatio-temporal abundance and habitat characteristics of Aedes larvae in the Southern Afar Region, Ethiopia. Methods: Immature mosquitoes were surveyed in Awash Sebat, Awash Arba, and Werer towns of the Southern Afar Region once per month from May 2022 to April 2023. Larvae and pupae surveys were carried out along the available water-holding containers. The collected larvae/pupae were reared to adults and identified by species/genus morphologically. The physical and chemical properties of the habitats were also characterized. Results: A total of 9099 Aedes larvae/pupae were collected, of which 53.6% (4875) were from Awash Sebat, 29.5% (2687) from Awash Arba and 16.9% (1537) from Werer. Water-holding tyres harboured the highest number of Aedes larvae/pupae followed by water-storage drums. All the Aedes larvae/pupae reared to adults were morphologically identified as Aedes aegypti. The overall Container Index was 47.28%, House Index 18.19%, Breteau Index 59.94% and Pupal Index 171.94. Significant positive relations were observed in the occurrences of Ae. aegypti larvae/pupae with water-holding tyre (AOR = 15.89, CI = 3.55–71.09, p < 0.001), water storage drums (AOR = 19.84, CI = 4.64–84.89, p < 0.001), domestic habitat (AOR = 3.76, CI = 1.27–11.12, p = 0.017), and significant negative relations were observed with Ae. aegypti larvae/pupae occurrence and tap water source (AOR = 0.08, CI = 0.02–0.31, p = 0.001). Ae. aegypti larvae/pupae densities showed positive relations with dissolved oxygen (β = 0.523, p < 0.001) and total hardness (β = 0.475, p = 0.034) of water. Conclusions: Diverse types of artificial water-holding containers were positive for Ae. aegypti larvae/pupae. Ae. aegypti larvae/pupae were abundant in used water-holding tyres, water storage drums, and cement tanks in Awash Sebat, Awash Arba, and Werer towns. This could put the residents of the towns at high risk of infections with Ae. aegypti transmitted viral diseases such as chikungunya and dengue outbreaks. Thus, we recommend artificial water-holding container management as a strategy to control Ae. aegypti and hence the arboviral diseases transmission. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery are all used in combination in modern cancer treatment to both extend the life and cure the disease. But a lot of these medications can lead to heart problems, myocardial infarctions, hypertension, thromboembolism, and arrhythmias, among other cardiovascular issues. This article analyzes the prevalence of cardiotoxicity caused by commonly used chemotherapy medications and discusses the etiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of these cardiovascular adverse effects. Given that it might have a major impact on cancer patients' overall prognosis and survival, cardiotoxicity linked with anticancer therapy must be recognized. The aging cancer patient population and the advent of various novel cancer medicines will certainly make cardiotoxicity a substantial concern for future use by cardiologists and oncologists. Campylobacter spp. is recognized as one of the most common pathogens involved in the development of gastrointestinal infections in humans. The current study aimed to enhance the knowledge on the occurrence and molecular characterization of Campylobacter spp. in pigs and cattle origin caecum samples (n = 56) collected in one year, from nine Romanian slaughterhouses, and to determine the antimicrobial resistance profile of the isolated strains. All Campylobacter spp. strains (n = 41) isolated from swine and cattle caecum samples were analyzed in terms of antimicrobial resistance, in accordance with the EURL protocol and with the Commission Implementing Decision No. 2020/1729. The prevalence rate for C. coli. in pig caecum samples was 92.3% (36/39), and the prevalence of C. jejuni, in cattle origin samples was 29.4% (5/17). C. coli strains isolated from pigs proved resistant to tetracycline 75% (27/36), ciprofloxacin 69.4% (25/36), erythromycin 8.3% (3/36), ertapenem 2.8% (1/36) and gentamicin 2.8% (1/36), but no resistance was observed towards chloramphenicol. C. jejuni strains originating from cattle expressed resistance to ciprofloxacin 60.0% (3/5) and tetracycline 20.0% (1/5), but they were susceptible to chloramphenicol, erythromycin, ertapenem and gentamicin. In the present study, 19.5% (7/36) C. coli strains isolated from pigs were identified as multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria. The obtained results demonstrated that pigs especially, but cattle to, can be considered important natural reservoirs for zoonotic multidrug-resistant Campylobacter strains, having a stimulating effect for further studies aiming at the molecular screening of the genotypic antimicrobial resistance processing of a higher number of samples.
