Leisure activities shared by grandparents and grandchildren provide important benefits. The health and humanitarian crisis caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has made it necessary to use digital tools to alleviate the lack of contact between adults and children. This paper had as its aim to identify the digital leisure shared by grandparents and their pre-adolescent grandchildren (10-12 years old) before and during the pandemic, as well as its contribution to intergenerational well-being from a holistic paradigm, ultimately aiming to determine whether that digital leisure constitutes an experience of human development for young and old people alike. The sample was made up of 153 grandparents of 10-to-12-year-old children living in the north of Spain. Alongside the use of an "ad hoc" questionnaire, descriptive and inferential analyses were carried out. Most intergenerational leisure activities ceased to be performed during the lockdown, except for those that could be carried out remotely, thanks to information and communication technologies, which ensured the continuity of social and family interactions. The Hawaiian Islands have been identified as a global biodiversity hotspot. We examine the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) using Climate Data Records products (0.05 × 0.05°) to identify significant differences in NDVI between neutral El Niño-Southern Oscillation years (1984, 2019) and significant long-term changes over the entire time series (1982-2019) for the Hawaiian Islands and six land cover classes. Overall, there has been a significant decline in NDVI (i.e., browning) across the Hawaiian Islands from 1982 to 2019 with the islands of Lānai and Hawaii experiencing the greatest decreases in NDVI (≥44%). All land cover classes significantly decreased in NDVI for most months, especially during the wet season month of March. Native vegetation cover across all islands also experienced significant declines in NDVI, with the leeward, southwestern side of the island of Hawaii experiencing the greatest declines. The long-term trends in the annual total precipitation and annual mean Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) for 1982-2019 on the Hawaiian Islands show significant concurrent declines. Primarily positive correlations between the native ecosystem NDVI and precipitation imply that significant decreases in precipitation may exacerbate the decrease in NDVI of native ecosystems. NDVI-PDSI correlations were primarily negative on the windward side of the islands and positive on the leeward sides, suggesting a higher sensitivity to drought for leeward native ecosystems. The integrin α4β7 selectively regulates lymphocyte trafficking and adhesion in the gut and gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT). Here, we describe unexpected involvement of the tyrosine phosphatase Shp1 and the B cell lectin CD22 (Siglec-2) in the regulation of α4β7 surface expression and gut immunity. Shp1 selectively inhibited β7 endocytosis, enhancing surface α4β7 display and lymphocyte homing to GALT. In B cells, CD22 associated in a sialic acid-dependent manner with integrin β7 on the cell surface to target intracellular Shp1 to β7. Shp1 restrained plasma membrane β7 phosphorylation and inhibited β7 endocytosis without affecting β1 integrin. B cells with reduced Shp1 activity, lacking CD22 or expressing CD22 with mutated Shp1-binding or carbohydrate-binding domains displayed parallel reductions in surface α4β7 and in homing to GALT. Consistent with the specialized role of α4β7 in intestinal immunity, CD22 deficiency selectively inhibited intestinal antibody and pathogen responses. more...

There is a debate concerning the definition and extent of tropical dry forest biome and vegetation type at a global spatial scale. We identify the potential extent of the tropical dry forest biome based on bioclimatic definitions and climatic data sets to improve global estimates of distribution, cover, and change. We compared four bioclimatic definitions of the tropical dry forest biome-Murphy and Lugo, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), DryFlor, aridity index-using two climatic data sets: WorldClim and Climatologies at High-resolution for the Earth's Land Surface Areas (CHELSA). We then compared each of the eight unique combinations of bioclimatic definitions and climatic data sets using 540 field plots identified as tropical dry forest from a literature search and evaluated the accuracy of World Wildlife Fund tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forest ecoregions. We used the definition and climate data that most closely matched field data to calculate forest cover in 2000 and change from 2001 to 2020. Globally, there was low agreement (< 58%) between bioclimatic definitions and WWF ecoregions and only 40% of field plots fell within these ecoregions. FAO using CHELSA had the highest agreement with field plots (81%) and was not correlated with the biome extent. Using the FAO definition with CHELSA climatic data set, we estimate 4,931,414 km2 of closed canopy (≥ 40% forest cover) tropical dry forest in 2000 and 4,369,695 km2 in 2020 with a gross loss of 561,719 km2 (11.4%) from 2001 to 2020. Tropical dry forest biome extent varies significantly based on bioclimatic definition used, with nearly half of all tropical dry forest vegetation missed when using ecoregion boundaries alone, especially in Africa. Parenteral nutrition (PN) composition could play a role in the management of systemic inflammatory response and intestinal barrier disruption. We aimed to evaluate changes in biomarkers of inflammation, oxidative status and intestinal permeability in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) who received different PN lipid formulas. This was a prospective study, including 94 patients with T2DM who received omega (n)-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA)-enriched PN, a mixture of medium and long chain triglycerides (MCT/LCT) PN, or an olive oil-based PN. Serum levels of biomarkers of oxidative status, intestinal permeability and inflammation biomarkers were determined at day 1 and day 5 after PN initiation. At day 5 after the onset of PN, the MCT/LCT group had a significant reduction of 2 proinflammatory cytokines [interleukin (IL)-15, IL-17A], elevation of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-13 and increase of zonulin and indoxylsulfate. The olive oil group showed a statistically significant reduction of 5 proinflammatory cytokines [IL-1β, IL-17A, IL-6, cytokine-leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α)] and reduced concentrations of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-1RA, while the n-3 PUFA-enriched group presented a statistically significant reduction of 8 proinflammatory cytokines (interferon-gamma, IL-1β, IL-15, IL-17A, IL-6, LIF, monocyte chemoattractant protein 1, and TNF-α). In the between-group comparisons, indoxylsulfate significantly increased in the MCT/LCT group compared to the n-3 PUFA-enriched group, while 8-isoprostane and indoxylsulfate significantly increased in the MCT/LCT group compared to the other groups and superoxide dismutase significantly decreased in the MCT/LCT group compared to the other groups. Gender equality is a fundamental principle of social justice that asserts that all individuals, regardless of their gender, should have equal rights, opportunities, and access to resources and power. Researching this phenomenon requires a deep understanding of the dimensions and factors that constitute it. The primary objective of this study is to propose a contextualized and comprehensive analytical model for conducting research related to gender equality. To achieve this, a thorough and systematic literature review was conducted using the PRISMA methodology. From a total of 511 articles located in major databases, 58 were selected. The categorization process led to the identification of 8 dimensions: labor and/or professional, coresponsibility and family reconciliation, education, health and emotions, culture and society, economy, gender-based violence, and freedom and autonomy, along with an open dimension labeled 'other aspects.' The final model integrates these dimensions, along with the inherent factors of each, with socio-demographic and ideological variables, resulting in a comprehensive and relevant model for studies on gender equality and subsequent socio-educational interventions based on these findings. To evaluate the effectiveness of "Physio-EndEA", a multimodal nine-week supervised exercise intervention, on quality of life, pain, and lumbopelvic impairments in women with endometriosis unresponsive to conventional therapy. Parallel-group randomized controlled trial. Outcomes were measured at baseline, post-intervention, and at 1 year. Two Public University Hospitals. This trial included 31 women with endometriosis (N=31) randomly allocated to "Physio-EndEA" group (n=16) or control group (n=15). Four participants dropped out of the study for causes unrelated to the intervention. The "Physio-EndEA" program consisted of a 1-week lumbopelvic stabilization learning phase followed by an 8-week phase of stretching, aerobic, and resistance exercises focused on the lumbopelvic area. It was sequentially instructed and supervised by a trained physiotherapist (with volume and intensity progression) and adapted daily to the potential of each participant. Control group received the usual treatment stipulated by their gynecologist. The primary outcome was quality of life. Secondary outcomes were pain intensity, pressure pain thresholds, pain-related catastrophic thoughts, abdominal and back strength, lumbopelvic stability, and muscle architecture. Adherence rate was 90.6% and mean (±standard deviation) satisfaction was 9.44±0.73 out of 10. No remarkable health problems were reported during the trial. In comparison with controls, the quality of life was improved post-intervention and at 1 year in the Physio-EndEA group with large effect sizes (d>0.80). This group also evidenced: a reduced intensity of dyspareunia, catastrophic thoughts; an increase in pelvic, lumbar, and distal pressure pain thresholds; increases in abdominal and back strength and lumbopelvic stability; and increased thickness of transversus abdominis (right side) and width of lumbar multifidus (left side). A 9-week program of multimodal supervised therapeutic exercise is a feasible and effective intervention to improve QoL in women with endometriosis.
