Desde la perspectiva de las congregaciones marianas se defendió una colaboración fraternal entre asociaciones, de acuerdo con los dictados de Pío XII y su antecesor, frente a la postura centralizadora y uniformadora de algunos católicos. Para ello, llevaron a cabo una estrategia concreta que acabó dando sus frutos con la constitución apostólica Bis Saeculari.

5. A Near Four-Decade Time Series Shows the Hawaiian Islands Have Been Browning Since the 1980s.

The Hawaiian Islands have been identified as a global biodiversity hotspot. We examine the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) using Climate Data Records products (0.05 × 0.05°) to identify significant differences in NDVI between neutral El Niño-Southern Oscillation years (1984, 2019) and significant long-term changes over the entire time series (1982-2019) for the Hawaiian Islands and six land cover classes. Overall, there has been a significant decline in NDVI (i.e., browning) across the Hawaiian Islands from 1982 to 2019 with the islands of Lānai and Hawaii experiencing the greatest decreases in NDVI (≥44%). All land cover classes significantly decreased in NDVI for most months, especially during the wet season month of March. Native vegetation cover across all islands also experienced significant declines in NDVI, with the leeward, southwestern side of the island of Hawaii experiencing the greatest declines. The long-term trends in the annual total precipitation and annual mean Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) for 1982-2019 on the Hawaiian Islands show significant concurrent declines. Primarily positive correlations between the native ecosystem NDVI and precipitation imply that significant decreases in precipitation may exacerbate the decrease in NDVI of native ecosystems. NDVI-PDSI correlations were primarily negative on the windward side of the islands and positive on the leeward sides, suggesting a higher sensitivity to drought for leeward native ecosystems. Multi-decadal time series and spatially explicit data for native landscapes provide natural resource managers with long-term trends and monthly changes associated with vegetation health and stability.

6. Digital Leisure: An Opportunity for Intergenerational Well-Being in Times of Pandemic?

- Abstract
Leisure activities shared by grandparents and grandchildren provide important benefits. The health and humanitarian crisis caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has made it necessary to use digital tools to alleviate the lack of contact between adults and children. This paper had as its aim to identify the digital leisure shared by grandparents and their pre-adolescent grandchildren (10-12 years old) before and during the pandemic, as well as its contribution to intergenerational well-being from a holistic paradigm, ultimately aiming to determine whether that digital leisure constitutes an experience of human development for young and old people alike. The sample was made up of 153 grandparents of 10-to-12-year-old children living in the north of Spain. Alongside the use of an "ad hoc" questionnaire, descriptive and inferential analyses were carried out. Most intergenerational leisure activities ceased to be performed during the lockdown, except for those that could be carried out remotely, thanks to information and communication technologies, which ensured the continuity of social and family interactions. Technological connectivity between generations provided greater support to communication and meaningful relationships, additionally facilitating active aging processes.

Abstract Electrodes with nanostructured surface have emerged as promising low-impedance neural interfaces that can avoid the charge‐injection restrictions typically associated to microelectrodes. In this work, we propose a novel approximation, based on a two-step template assisted electrodeposition technique, to obtain flexible nanostructured electrodes coated with core–shell Ni–Au vertical nanowires. These nanowires benefit from biocompatibility of the Au shell exposed to the environment and the mechanical properties of Ni that allow for nanowires longer and more homogeneous in length than their only-Au counterparts. The nanostructured electrodes show impedance values, measured by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), at least 9 times lower than those of flat reference electrodes. This ratio is in good accordance with the increased effective surface area determined both from SEM images and cyclic voltammetry measurements, evidencing that only Au is exposed to the medium. The observed EIS profile evolution of Ni–Au electrodes over 7 days were very close to those of Au electrodes and differently from Ni ones. Finally, the morphology, viability and neuronal differentiation of rat embryonic cortical cells cultured on Ni–Au NW electrodes were found to be similar to those on control (glass) substrates and Au NW electrodes, accompanied by a lower glial cell differentiation. This positive in-vitro neural cell behavior encourages further investigation to explore the tissue responses that the implantation of these nanostructured electrodes might elicit in healthy (damaged) neural tissues in vivo, with special emphasis on eventual tissue encapsulation.

Abstract Background The ‘FAST‐forward’, study published in April 2020, demonstrated the effectiveness of an extremely hypofractionated radiotherapy schedule, delivering the total radiation dose in five sessions over the course of 1 week. We share our department's experience regarding patients treated with this regimen in real‐world clinical settings, detailing outcomes related to short‐term toxicity and efficacy. Methods A descriptive observational study was conducted on 160 patients diagnosed with breast cancer. Between July 2020 and December 2021, patients underwent conservative surgery followed by a regimen of 26 Gy administered in five daily fractions. Results The median age was 64 years (range: 43–83), with 82 patients (51.3%) treated for left‐sided breast cancer, 77 patients (48.1%) for right‐sided breast cancer, and 1 instance (0.6%) of bilateral breast cancer. Of these, 66 patients had pT1c (41.3%), 70.6% were infiltrative ductal carcinomas, and 11.3% were ductal carcinoma in situ. Abstract Background While the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in human breast milk is contentious, anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies have been consistently detected in human breast milk. However, it is uncertain when and how long the antibodies are present. Methods This was a prospective cohort study including all consecutive pregnant women with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy, recruited at six maternity units in Spain and Hong Kong from March 2020 to March 2021. Colostrum (day of birth until day 4 postpartum) and mature milk (day 7 postpartum until 6 weeks postpartum) were prospectively collected, and paired maternal blood samples were also collected. Colostrum samples were tested with rRT-PCR-SARS-CoV-2, and skimmed acellular milk and maternal sera were tested against SARS-CoV-2 specific immunoglobulin M, A, and G reactive to receptor binding domain of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein 1 to determine the presence of immunoglobulins. Then, we examined how each immunoglobulin type in the colostrum was related to the time of infection by logistic regression analysis, the concordance between these immunoglobulins in the colostrum, maternal serum, and mature milk by Cohen's kappa statistic, and the relationship between immunoglobulin levels in mature milk and colostrum with McNemar. Results One hundred eighty-seven pregnant women with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy or childbirth were recruited and donated the milk and blood samples. No SARS-CoV-2 was found in the human breast milk. Immunoglobulin A, G, and M were present in 129/162 (79·6%), 5/163 (3·1%), and 15/76 (19·7%) colostrum samples and in 17/62 (27·42%), 2/62 (3·23%) and 2/62 (3·23%) mature milk samples, respectively. Summary: Background: Tobacco is the main risk factor for developing lung cancer. Yet, while some heavy smokers develop lung cancer at a young age, other heavy smokers never develop it, even at an advanced age, suggesting a remarkable variability in the individual susceptibility to the carcinogenic effects of tobacco. We characterized the germline profile of subjects presenting these extreme phenotypes with Whole Exome Sequencing (WES) and Machine Learning (ML). Methods: We sequenced germline DNA from heavy smokers who either developed lung adenocarcinoma at an early age (extreme cases) or who did not develop lung cancer at an advanced age (extreme controls), selected from databases including over 6600 subjects. We selected individual coding genetic variants and variant-rich genes showing a significantly different distribution between extreme cases and controls. We validated the results from our discovery cohort, in which we analysed by WES extreme cases and controls presenting similar phenotypes. We developed ML models using both cohorts. Findings: Mean age for extreme cases and controls was 50.7 and 79.1 years respectively, and mean tobacco consumption was 34.6 and 62.3 pack-years. We validated 16 individual variants and 33 variant-rich genes. The gene harbouring the most validated variants was HLA-A in extreme controls (4 variants in the discovery cohort, p = 3.46E-07; and 4 in the validation cohort, p = 1.67E-06). We trained ML models using as input the 16 individual variants in the discovery cohort and tested them on the validation cohort, obtaining an accuracy of 76.5% and an AUC-ROC of 83.6%. Functions of validated genes included candidate oncogenes, tumour-suppressors, DNA repair, HLA-mediated antigen presentation and regulation of proliferation, apoptosis, inflammation and immune response. Interpretation: Individuals presenting extreme phenotypes of high and low risk of developing tobacco-associated lung adenocarcinoma show different germline profiles. Our strategy may allow the identification of high-risk subjects and the development of new therapeutic approaches. Pharmacology has broadened its scope considerably in recent decades. Initially, it was of interest to chemists, doctors and pharmacists. In recent years, however, it has been incorporated into the teaching of biologists, molecular biologists, biotechnologists, chemical engineers and many health professionals, among others. Traditional teaching methods, such as lectures or laboratory work, have been superseded by the use of new pedagogical approaches to enable a better conceptualization and understanding of the discipline. In this article, we present several new methods that have been used in Spanish universities. Firstly, we describe a teaching network that has allowed the sharing of pedagogical innovations in Spanish universities. A European experience to improve prescribing safety is described in detail. The use of popular films and medical TV series in biomedical students shows how these audiovisual resources can be helpful in teaching pharmacology. The use of virtual worlds is detailed to introduce this new approach to teaching. The increasingly important area of the social aspects of pharmacology is also considered in two sections, one devoted to social pharmacology and the other to the use of learning based on social services to improve understanding of this important area. Finally, the use of Objective Structured Clinical Evaluation in pharmacology allows to know how this approach can help to better evaluate clinical pharmacology students. In conclusion, this article allows to know new pedagogical methods resources used in some Spanish universities that may help to improve the teaching of pharmacology.

While the scientific community has long acknowledged the significant role of serendipity in shaping the field of contemporary psychopharmacology, its impact has not undergone a comprehensive analysis using operational methodologies. Serendipity, originally defined as discoveries stemming from a blend of luck and astuteness by Walpole, has been operationalized by our research group. Our definition builds upon Walpole’s notion of fortuitous accidents and keen insight leading to the unexpected revelation of something unintended. We have discerned four unique serendipitous attributability patterns. In this paper, we delve into the historical aspect of how serendipity has played a role in the discovery and advancement of drugs approved for addressing different stages of bipolar disorder. The revelation of valproate’s antimanic properties aligns with the pure serendipitous pattern (type I). Conversely, the discovery of lithium’s antimanic effects corresponds to the mixed type II pattern, where the initial serendipitous observation of sedation in research animals, prompted by adding lithium salts to enhance uric acid solubility, led to the planned discovery of its calming impact on manic patients. On the contrary, the recognition of the mood-stabilizing attributes of lamotrigine aligns with the type III archetype. This particular pattern is defined by serendipity emerging as a consequence of a discovery that was initially nonserendipitous, as mood-stabilizing efficacy was incidentally observed during the treatment of epileptic patients for whom the drug was originally developed. Finally, carbamazepine and, notably, atypical antipsychotics fall within the type IV pattern. In this category, serendipity is entirely absent, as the antimanic use of carbamazepine was a straightforward extension of the use of other antiepileptic drugs. Atypical antipsychotics were introduced into bipolar disorder therapy through a deliberate and targeted design process, seeking drugs capable of acting on specific biological targets.

17. Asymptomatic endometrial thickening in postmenopausal women: predictor of malignant pathology?

It is not standardised what is the endometrial thickness that discriminates between normal and potentially malignant. The objective of this study was to determine the endometrial thickness cut-off point from which the risk of endometrial cancer (EC) increases in asymptomatic postmenopausal women; and to evaluate the risk factors linked to malignant endometrial pathology as well as other associated ultrasound findings. This was a retrospective observational study that included hysteroscopies performed at the Hospital Materno-Infantil on 267 asymptomatic menopausal women with an increase in endometrial thickness (AET) >5 mm, from 2015 to 2019. The results shows that the prevalence of malignant pathology in asymptomatic postmenopausal women with a casual finding of endometrial thickening was 3.7%. This percentage was 16.3% when the cut-off point of AET was established at 10 mm. There was a significant association for the diagnosis of malignant pathology with this cut-off point. There is a significant association between the 10 mm endometrial thickness cut-off point from which the risk of EC increases in asymptomatic postmenopausal women.Impact statement What is already known on this subject? Several studies have established the cut-off point for asymptomatic endometrial thickening (AET) for atypical endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial cancer at 10 mm. Although no cut-off point has optimal accuracy for the diagnosis of malignant endometrial pathology, it has been found that with a cut-off value of AET >10 mm no cases are missed. Likewise, a cut-off point of AET > 11 mm may provide a balance between cancer detection and histopathological workup extension. What do the results of this study add? A significant association was found at the cut-off point of AET > 10 mm, which suggests that screening postmenopausal women at this thickness is acceptable and unlikely to miss cases of endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial cancer. What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? After analysing our results we can conclude, like other published studies, that by establishing a cut-off point of 10 mm we obtain a good discrimination between benign and malignant pathology, which would allow us to diagnose 100% of malignant pathology. Above this cut-off point, the risk of endometrial cancer increases, and it would therefore be advisable to extend the study. A multicentre study is needed to confirm the cut-off point at which the risk of endometrial cancer increases in postmenopausal women with asymptomatic endometrial thickening.

The integrin α4β7 selectively regulates lymphocyte trafficking and adhesion in the gut and gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT). Here, we describe unexpected involvement of the tyrosine phosphatase Shp1 and the B cell lectin CD22 (Siglec-2) in the regulation of α4β7 surface expression and gut immunity. Shp1 selectively inhibited β7 endocytosis, enhancing surface α4β7 display and lymphocyte homing to GALT. In B cells, CD22 associated in a sialic acid-dependent manner with integrin β7 on the cell surface to target intracellular Shp1 to β7. Shp1 restrained plasma membrane β7 phosphorylation and inhibited β7 endocytosis without affecting β1 integrin. B cells with reduced Shp1 activity, lacking CD22 or expressing CD22 with mutated Shp1-binding or carbohydrate-binding domains displayed parallel reductions in surface α4β7 and in homing to GALT. Consistent with the specialized role of α4β7 in intestinal immunity, CD22 deficiency selectively inhibited intestinal antibody and pathogen responses.

21. Global tropical dry forest extent and cover: A comparative study of bioclimatic definitions using two climatic data sets.

There is a debate concerning the definition and extent of tropical dry forest biome and vegetation type at a global spatial scale. We identify the potential extent of the tropical dry forest biome based on bioclimatic definitions and climatic data sets to improve global estimates of distribution, cover, and change. We compared four bioclimatic definitions of the tropical dry forest biome-Murphy and Lugo, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), DryFlor, aridity index-using two climatic data sets: WorldClim and Climatologies at High-resolution for the Earth's Land Surface Areas (CHELSA). We then compared each of the eight unique combinations of bioclimatic definitions and climatic data sets using 540 field plots identified as tropical dry forest from a literature search and evaluated the accuracy of World Wildlife Fund tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forest ecoregions. We used the definition and climate data that most closely matched field data to calculate forest cover in 2000 and change from 2001 to 2020. Globally, there was low agreement (< 58%) between bioclimatic definitions and WWF ecoregions and only 40% of field plots fell within these ecoregions. FAO using CHELSA had the highest agreement with field plots (81%) and was not correlated with the biome extent. Using the FAO definition with CHELSA climatic data set, we estimate 4,931,414 km2 of closed canopy (≥ 40% forest cover) tropical dry forest in 2000 and 4,369,695 km2 in 2020 with a gross loss of 561,719 km2 (11.4%) from 2001 to 2020. Tropical dry forest biome extent varies significantly based on bioclimatic definition used, with nearly half of all tropical dry forest vegetation missed when using ecoregion boundaries alone, especially in Africa. Using site-specific field validation, we find that the FAO definition using CHELSA provides an accurate, standard, and repeatable way to assess tropical dry forest cover and change at a global scale.

We aimed to explore the relationship of adipose tissue concentrations of some persistent organic pollutants (POPs) with the risk of endometriosis and the endometriotic tissue expression profile of genes related to the endometriosis-related epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) process. This case–control study enrolled 109 women (34 cases and 75 controls) between January 2018 and March 2020. Adipose tissue samples and endometriotic tissues were intraoperatively collected to determine concentrations of nine POPs and the gene expression profiles of 36 EMT-related genes, respectively. Associations of POPs with endometriosis risk were explored with multivariate logistic regression, while the relationship between exposure and gene expression profiles was assessed through Spearman correlation or Mann–Whitney U tests. After adjustment, increased endometriosis risk was associated with p,p’-DDT, PCB-180, and ΣPCBs. POP exposure was also associated with reduced gene expression levels of the CLDN7 epithelial marker and increased levels of the ITGB2 mesenchymal marker and a variety of EMT promoters (HMGA1, HOXA10, FOXM1, DKK1, CCR1, TNFRSF1B, RRM2, ANG, ANGPT1, and ESR1). Our findings indicate that exposure to POPs may increase the risk of endometriosis and might have a role in the endometriosis-related EMT development, contributing to the disease onset and progression. Further studies are warranted to corroborate these findings.

This paper presents baseline results from the NutriEcoMuscle study, a multicenter observational study conducted in Spain which focused on changes in nutritional status, body composition, and functionality in post-intensive care unit (ICU) COVID-19 patients following a nutritional intervention. Assessments at hospital discharge included Subjective Global Assessment (SGA), Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria, the Barthel index, handgrip strength (HGS) and the Timed Up-and-Go test, bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), and nutritional ultrasound (US). The study involved 96 patients (71.9% male, mean age 58.8 years, mean BMI 28.8 kg/m2, 36.5% obese). All patients were malnourished at discharge according to GLIM and SGA. Functional status declined from admission up to hospital discharge. A total of 33.3% of patients had a low fat-free mass index (FFMI) and 29.5% had a low phase angle (PhA). Myosteatosis was observed in 83.7% of the population. There was a positive correlation between rectus femoris cross-sectional area, PhA, FFMI, and HGS. In conclusion, post-critically ill COVID-19 patients commonly suffer from malnutrition and reduced muscle mass, causing a loss of independence at hospital discharge. BIA and US could be valuable tools for assessing body composition in these patients. The NutriEcoMuscle study highlights the need for a thorough nutritional and morphofunctional status assessment of post-ICU patients.

Intergenerational leisure can be a tool to stimulate and reinforce the learning of primary school students. The aim of this study was to examine which leisure activities shared by grandparents and their grandchildren are carried out from the perception of intergenerational learning as one of the main reasons for joint practice, and its link with the grandparents’ level of education. An ad hoc questionnaire was administered to 329 students aged 6 to 12 years in the north of Spain, and a descriptive study and inferential analysis of the data were carried out. The leisure activities that students highlight the most as experiences in which they perceive that by sharing them with their grandparents, they learn from them, are board games, artistic activities, caring for plants or gardens and reading. There are only significant differences in the learning perceived by primary school students depending on the level of education of their grandparents in caring for plants or vegetable gardens, as the grandparents of children aged 6 to 12 in the northern part of Spain are more able to teach their grandchildren to care for plants or vegetable gardens when their level of education is primary education. These four activities highlighted by the grandchildren as facilitators of knowledge are very interesting instruments to stimulate and reinforce the education of primary school students, so involving grandparents in their grandchildren’s education and taking advantage of their knowledge and experience, as well as their ability to stimulate their grandchildren, is a good strategy to turn free time into valuable leisure time.

Deísmo is a non-standard dialectal phenomenon consisting of the insertion of a non-required preposition de ‘of’ before a non-finite clause: Me apetece (de) salir ‘I want to go out’. In most papers, de is analyzed as a defective complementizer that does not change the meaning of the sentence. However, deísmo has also been associated with a prospective meaning with some verbs, and de has been considered as a marker of evidentiality with visual perception verbs. In this paper, we provide a formal analysis for deísmo constructions, in which de is located in a projection below that occupied by de in dequeísmo constructions). Secondly, we will show the results of a questionnaire whose objective is to figure out if there is an evidential meaning associated with deísmo. For the questionnaire, we made a preliminary search in Corpus Oral y Sonoro del Español Rural (COSER) and in Spanish Web Corpus 2018 (Sketch Engine). From this, we selected the most frequent verbs with deísmo in Castilla-La Mancha (Spain). An examination of the results revealed that, on the one hand, deísmo is lexically associated with certain verbs, but not necessarily with all of the same semantic class; and on the other hand, that there is not an evidential meaning associated with deísmo.

Increasing evidence has been published over recent years on the implication of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), including parabens and benzophenones in the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of endometriosis. However, to the best of our knowledge, no study has been published on the ways in which exposure to EDCs might affect cell-signaling pathways related to endometriosis. We aimed to describe the endometriotic tissue expression profile of a panel of 23 genes related to crucial cell-signaling pathways for the development and progression of endometriosis (cell adhesion, invasion/migration, inflammation, angiogenesis, and cell proliferation/hormone stimulation) and explore its relationship with the exposure of patients to parabens (PBs) and benzophenones (BPs). This cross-sectional study included a subsample of 33 women with endometriosis from the EndEA study, measuring their endometriotic tissue expressions of 23 genes, while urinary concentrations of methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, butyl-paraben, benzophenone-1, benzophenone-3, and 4-hydroxybenzophenone were determined in 22 women. Spearman’s correlations test and linear and logistic regression analyses were performed. The expression of 52.2% of studied genes was observed in >75% of endometriotic tissue samples and the expression of 17.4% (n = 4) of them in 50–75%. Exposure to certain PB and BP congeners was positively associated with the expression of key genes for the development and proliferation of endometriosis. Genes related to the development and progression of endometriosis were expressed in most endometriotic tissue samples studied, suggesting that exposure of women to PBs and BPs may be associated with the altered expression profile of genes related to cellular pathways involved in the development of endometriosis.

Leisure activities shared by grandparents and grandchildren provide important benefits. The health and humanitarian crisis caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has made it necessary to use digital tools to alleviate the lack of contact between adults and children. This paper had as its aim to identify the digital leisure shared by grandparents and their pre-adolescent grandchildren (10-12 years old) before and during the pandemic, as well as its contribution to intergenerational well-being from a holistic paradigm, ultimately aiming to determine whether that digital leisure constitutes an experience of human development for young and old people alike. The sample was made up of 153 grandparents of 10-to-12-year-old children living in the north of Spain. Alongside the use of an ad hoc questionnaire, descriptive and inferential analyses were carried out. Most intergenerational leisure activities ceased to be performed during the lockdown, except for those that could be carried out remotely, thanks to information and communication technologies, which ensured the continuity of social and family interactions. Technological connectivity between generations provided greater support to communication and meaningful relationships, additionally facilitating active aging processes.

31. Factors associated with COVID-19 lethality in a hospital in the Cajamarca region in Peru

Objective. To identify the clinical and epidemiological characteristics related to lethality in patients hospitalized for COVID-19 at the Simón Bolívar Hospital in Cajamarca, during June-August 2020. Materials and Methods. This was a retrospective cohort, that used information collected from clinical records and official epidemiological surveillance systems (NOTIWEB, SISCOVID and SINADEF), on hospitalized patients with confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis. Information was collected on sociodemographic and clinical factors, considering discharge (death/survival) and days of hospitalization as outcomes. Results. The in-hospital fatality rate was 39.6%, and significant differences were found between hospitalization time and status at discharge in people over 60 years of age (p0.001). Age older than 60 years (HR: 2.87; 95% CI: 1.76-4.68),) unattended ICU bed request (HR: 3.49; 95% CI: 2.02-6.05), oxygen saturation less than 80% at admission (HR: 2.73; 95% CI: 1.35-5.53) and the use of ivermectin (HR: 1.68; 95%CI 1.06-2.68) were factors associated with lethality. The chosen ML model considered that the most important variables were oxygen saturation, age over 60 years, time of hospitalization and time of the onset of symptoms. Conclusion. The factors that could increase lethality in patients hospitalized for COVID-19 were age, oxygen saturation less than 80%, use of ivermectin as part of hospital treatment and unattended request for ICU beds. Future studies with better representativeness could confirm these possible relationships at the regional or national level.

Some advances of a research project that will end in December 2022 are presented. It is analyzing how in the republican years prior to the coup d'état of July 18, 1936 there was a deployment of scientific-technical knowledge that had various results. In higher and secondary education, a quantitative leap and qualitative development were made, thanks to greater support from republican governments for science and education and a broader interest of society in scientific-technical problems. As the socialization of knowledge increased, new audiences for science emerged, among which a significant sector of the urban female population can be detected. This communication presents some project results related to two issues. On the one hand, with the teaching innovations made in the field of secondary education and in the training schools of primary school teachers based on the promotion of active and experimental teaching. On the other hand, with the intensification of the process of internationalization of the Spanish scientific system in those years due to the coming to Spain of foreign scientists to collaborate with its educational and scientific institutions and the ability of the Spanish State during the republican years to host a set of congresses related to various scientific disciplines ranging from medicine to Americanist studies, going through chemistry or entomology.

34. Pruning our expectations: The implications and applications of earth observation in developing urban forestry tools in Los Angeles County

This dissertation, largely funded by the County of Los Angeles to optimize its urban forest planning and management, conducts a critical examination of the implications, applications, and limitations of remote sensing technology in applied science. Leveraging technologies such as Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) and high-resolution optical data, remote sensing has offered unparalleled insights into the Earth's surface and atmosphere. Specific applications, such as tree crown segmentation and creation of precise 3D environmental models, have proven invaluable in fields including ecology and urban planning. However, this technology is not without its challenges. An over-reliance on remote sensing data, absent corroborative ground-truthing, can lead to flawed conclusions. Furthermore, using low-resolution imagery for policy decisions concerning fine-scale, on-the-ground issues could create discrepancies between the data and actual conditions, undermining the effectiveness of interventions. In my first and second chapter of this dissertation, I demonstrate that remote sensing technology has become indispensable, particularly for monitoring individual species over time for urban forest management. By identifying and delineating individual tree crowns, this technology enables accurate estimation of species composition and condition. This detailed information facilitates species health monitoring and early disease detection, thereby aiding effective management interventions. However, the effectiveness of remote sensing in urban forestry necessitates continuous data update and integration of ground-based observations for validation. In my third chapter, I transition from the practical applications of remote sensing in urban forestry, and lean on previous research experience, including my collaboration with Los Angeles County, to delve into the social dimensions of this technology. The concept of "socializing the pixel" provides a critical framework for understanding how remote sensing operates within and is influenced by sociopolitical contexts. This perspective recognizes that remote sensing is not a purely objective tool but is embedded within social structures and power dynamics. Stakeholder engagement is thus crucial to consider diverse perspectives in data interpretation and application, enhancing the technology's effectiveness and local relevance. Conversely, power imbalances between remote sensing experts and non-experts, and denial of local knowledge can lead to biased results or misinterpretation of data. Hence, returning to the concept of "socializing the pixel" is critical to ensure effective and equitable use of remote sensing technology.

Muscular dystrophies are a group of well-defined genetic disorders characterized by the variable distribution of muscle wasting and progressive weakness. The diagnosis and treatment of these diseases remain challenging due to genetic heterogeneity and clinical overlapping. Herein, we describe our 10 years’ experience with the diagnosis and management of muscular dystrophy patients. In total, 169 patients were screened for pathogenic variants in eleven genes linked to frequent muscular dystrophies using MLPA and NGS sequencing panels. Most frequent muscular dystrophies found in the Mexican population were dystrophinopathies, dysferlinopathies and calpainopathies. Novel variants were found in genes: DMD, CAPN3, DYSF, and FKRP. For Duchenne muscular dystrophy, improvements in early diagnosis and prolonged ambulation were achieved, on the contrary, for limb-girdle muscular dystrophies and congenital muscular dystrophies, uncomplimentary follow-up and lack of detection strategies were observed. For most common muscular dystrophies, improvements in diagnosis and management have been achieved in the last 10 years, due to a collaborative effort done nationwide.

Abstract Our aim was to evaluate whether fatty liver index (FLI) is associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) development within the Spanish adult population and according to their prediabetes status; additionally, to examine its incremental predictive value regarding traditional risk factors. A total of 2260 subjects (Prediabetes: 641 subjects, normoglycemia: 1619 subjects) from the Di@bet.es cohort study were studied. Socio-demographic, anthropometric, clinical data and survey on habits were recorded. An oral glucose tolerance test was performed and fasting determinations of glucose, lipids and insulin were made. FLI was calculated and classified into three categories: Low ( 60). In total, 143 people developed diabetes at follow-up. The presence of a high FLI category was in all cases a significant independent risk factor for the development of diabetes. The inclusion of FLI categories in prediction models based on different conventional T2DM risk factors significantly increase the prediction power of the models when all the population was considered. According to our results, FLI might be considered an early indicator of T2DM development even under normoglycemic condition. The data also suggest that FLI could provide additional information for the prediction of T2DM in models based on conventional risk factors.

Expanders, as lignosulfonates, are crucial for a good performance of Pb/acid batteries. In the process of discharge, the Pb and the PbO2 go to PbSO4. The formed PbSO4 is adsorbed on the surface of the Pb electrode and dramatically reduces the lifetime of the battery by the formation of big PbSO4 crystals. In order to prevent that, the addition of expanders in the negative electrode is an economic solution to prevent the formation of big crystals. In this investigation, we propose the synthesis of several lignosulfonates obtained from lignin of many biomass origins. We have derivatized nine samples of lignin via microwave-assisted sulfonation, then we have characterized how efficient is the chosen synthesis method. The lignosulfonates obtained have been characterized by infrared spectroscopy (IR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1HNMR), two-dimensional correlated spectroscopy (COSY), and elemental analysis to acquire some relevant information about their structure in terms of functional groups. In this way, three commercial lignosulfonates, Vanisperse A, Indulin AT, and Oakwood, have been selected as references for our comparisons. Moreover, we have checked their electrochemical properties, using electrochemical techniques to compare their behavior with respect to the commercial lignosulfonates. Finally, we have selected one of them and we have tested its performance as an expander in a Pb/acid battery. That result is a very promising first approach, and we can conclude that lignosulfonates derivatives are a good and low-cost choice to improve the lifetime of Pb/acid batteries. In particular, it is shown that the incorporation of LignosB improves the cell formation as well as the first capacity (36.30% more) and the charge acceptance (63.16% more), being these relevant parameters in the performance of Pb/acid batteries.

39. Assessment of physical fitness during pregnancy: validity and reliability of fitness tests, and relationship with maternal and neonatal health – a systematic review

Objectives To systematically review studies evaluating one or more components of physical fitness (PF) in pregnant women, to answer two research questions: (1) What tests have been employed to assess PF in pregnant women? and (2) What is the validity and reliability of these tests and their relationship with maternal and neonatal health?Design A systematic review.Data sources PubMed and Web of Science.Eligibility criteria Original English or Spanish full-text articles in a group of healthy pregnant women which at least one component of PF was assessed (field based or laboratory tests).Results A total of 149 articles containing a sum of 191 fitness tests were included. Among the 191 fitness tests, 99 (ie, 52%) assessed cardiorespiratory fitness through 75 different protocols, 28 (15%) assessed muscular fitness through 16 different protocols, 14 (7%) assessed flexibility through 13 different protocols, 45 (24%) assessed balance through 40 different protocols, 2 assessed speed with the same protocol and 3 were multidimensional tests using one protocol. A total of 19 articles with 23 tests (13%) assessed either validity (n=4), reliability (n=6) or the relationship of PF with maternal and neonatal health (n=16).Conclusion Physical fitness has been assessed through a wide variety of protocols, mostly lacking validity and reliability data, and no consensus exists on the most suitable fitness tests to be performed during pregnancy.PROSPERO registration number CRD42018117554.

40. The Prevalence and Impact of Nutritional Risk and Malnutrition in Gastrointestinal Surgical Oncology Patients: A Prospective, Observational, Multicenter, and Exploratory Study

A prospective, observational, multicenter, and exploratory study was conducted in 469 gastrointestinal cancer patients undergoing elective surgery. The Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST) and the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria were used to assess nutritional risk. On admission, 17.9% and 21.1% of patients were at moderate (MUST score 1) and severe (MUST score ≥ 2) nutritional risk, respectively. The GLIM criteria used in patients with a MUST score ≥ 2 showed moderate malnutrition in 35.3% of patients and severe in 64.6%. Forty-seven percent of patients with a MUST score ≥ 2 on admission had the same score at discharge, and 20.7% with a MUST score 0 had moderate/severe risk at discharge. Small bowel, esophageal, and gastric cancer and diabetes were predictors of malnutrition on admission. Complications were significantly higher among patients with a MUST score 1 or ≥2 either on admission (p = 0.001) or at discharge (p < 0.0001). In patients who received nutritional therapy (n = 231), 43% continued to have moderate/severe nutritional risk on discharge, and 54% of those with MUST ≥ 2 on admission maintained this score at discharge. In gastrointestinal cancer patients undergoing elective surgery, there is an urgent need for improving nutritional risk screening before and after surgery, as well as improving nutritional therapy during hospitalization.

Biomass-derived products, such as lignin, are interesting resources for energetic purposes. Lignin is a natural polymer that, when added to the anode of an alkaline exchange membrane water electrolyser, enhances H2 production rates and efficiencies due to the substitution of the oxygen evolution reaction. Higher efficiencies are reported when different catalytic materials are employed for constructing the lignin anolyte, demonstrating that lower catalytic loadings for the anode improves the H2 production when compared to higher loadings. Furthermore, when a potential of −1.8 V is applied, higher gains are obtained than when −2.3 V is applied. An increase of 200% of H2 flow rates with respect to water electrolysis is reported when commercial lignin is used coupled with Pt-Ru at 0.09 mg cm−2 and E = −1.8 V is applied at the cathode. This article provides deep information about the oxidation process, as well as an optimisation of the method of the lignin electro-oxidation in a flow-reactor as a pre-step for an industrial implementation.

Background: Menstrual disorders were not reported as a possible secondary effect in any of the clinical trials for the SARS-CoV-2 vaccines. Aim: To describe the prevalence of perceived premenstrual and menstrual changes after COVID-19 vaccine administration. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: A total of 14,153 women (mean age 31.5 ± 9.3 years old) who had received the full course of vaccination at least three months earlier were included in this cross-sectional study. Data including the type of vaccine administered, perceived changes in the amount and duration of menstrual bleeding, presence of clots, cycle length, and premenstrual symptoms were collected through a retrospective online survey from June to September 2021. Results: Of the women who participated in this study, 3136 reported no menstrual changes and 11,017 (78% of the study sample) reported experiencing menstrual cycle changes after vaccination. Por ello es importante analizar sus percepciones para así identificar las fortalezas y debilidades al respecto desde el contexto del centro educativo, siendo esta concepción el objetivo principal de esta investigación. Así pues, se llevó a cabo una evaluación en 20 centros de Educación Infantil y Primaria de la Comunidad Autónoma de La Rioja (España), utilizando la Guía de autoevaluación de centros para la atención a la diversidad desde la inclusión (Acadi). Los resultados mostraron que los participantes compartían unos valores inclusivos y un liderazgo pedagógico que facilita el progreso hacia una educación inclusiva.

En este artículo intentaremos ir más allá de los diagnósticos escolares que funcionan solo para dar cuenta de los ejemplos prototípicos del complemento directo. Siguiendo la Nueva gramática de la lengua española, examinaremos las condiciones que legitiman la ausencia de este complemento, analizaremos la distribución de la preposición a, y hablaremos de algunas precauciones que hay que tener con la sustitución pronominal y con la pasivización. También se proponen algunos ejercicios de la tipología de Bosque y Gallego (2016) que pueden resultar útiles para trabajar con esta función sintáctica. Pretendemos, por un lado, mejorar las descripciones y análisis que se ofrecen en secundaria. Por otro, buscamos llamar la atención sobre los puntos en los que debemos ser cautos, bien porque el análisis de los datos es polémico, o bien porque hay mucha variación entre los hablantes.

46. Effects of Immunonutrition on Cancer Patients Undergoing Surgery: A Scoping Review

Introduction: There is a large body of evidence about immunonutrition formulas; however, there are still doubts about their usefulness in routine clinical practice as compared with standard formulas. In the age of personalized medicine, new studies appear every year regarding several types of patients; therefore, an updated point of view on these formulas is necessary. Methods: The Embase database was searched from 2016 to 14 March 2022. Our criteria were articles published in English and Spanish. The evidence quality was evaluated using GRADEpro, and the review was developed according to the PRISMA statement. Results: In this review, a total of 65 unique records were retrieved; however, 36 articles did not meet the inclusion criteria and were thus excluded. In total, 29 articles were included in the final analysis. In the last few years, many meta-analyses have attempted to identify additional existing studies of surgical patients with certain pathologies, mainly oncological patients. Immunonutrition prior to oncological surgery was shown to cause a decrease in inflammatory markers in most of the studies, and the main clinical events that changed were the infectious complications after surgery. The length of stay and mortality data are controversial due to the specific risk factors associated with these events. Conclusions: The use of immunonutrition in patients who have undergone oncological surgery decreases the levels of inflammatory markers and infectious postoperative complications in almost all localizations. However, more studies are needed to assess the use of immunonutrition based on Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols.

47. Strategies to Enhance CO2 Electrochemical Reduction from Reactive Carbon Solutions

CO2 electrochemical reduction (CO2 ER) from (bi)carbonate feed presents an opportunity to efficiently couple this process to alkaline-based carbon capture systems. Likewise, while this method of reducing CO2 currently lags behind CO2 gas-fed electrolysers in certain performance metrics, it offers a significant improvement in CO2 utilization which makes the method worth exploring. This paper presents two simple modifications to a bicarbonate-fed CO2 ER system that enhance the selectivity towards CO. Specifically, a modified hydrophilic cathode with Ag catalyst loaded through electrodeposition and the addition of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB), a low-cost surfactant, to the catholyte enabled the system to achieve a FECO of 85% and 73% at 100 and 200 mA·cm−2, respectively. The modifications were tested in 4 h long experiments where DTAB helped maintain FECO stable even when the pH of the catholyte became more alkaline, and it improved the CO2 utilization compared to a system without DTAB.

El presente artículo analiza la recepción de la figura de Viriato y Numancia en las fuentes árabes. Durante el siglo X, ambos episodios son recuperados por dos obras andalusíes, gracias a la utilización y traducción de obras clásicas, en concreto, las Historias de Orosio. Mi contribución analiza ambas obras y centra la atención en el relato elaborado por el historiador cordobés Aḥmad al-Rāzī (m. 344/955), rescatando este discurso del olvido y señalando su origen, valor y trascendencia posterior dentro de la historiografía medieval hispana.

Las destrucciones de estatuas, yacimientos y museos llevadas a cabo por DAESH en Siria e Iraq no deben ser considerados simples actos vandálicos o acciones iconoclastas en base a su interpretación radical y tergiversada del islam, sino que en realidad esconden un discurso complejo que debe entenderse dentro del debate actual sobre la redefinición del patrimonio, particularmente de las estatuas, cuestionadas por representar un pasado colonialista o autocrático que ya no se considera digno de ser conservado y recordado.
