Reticuloendothelial liver scanning and hepatic angiography in the localization and assessment of liver tumours have been compared. The use of macroaggregated radioisotopes via an hepatic catheter to assess the vascularity of tumours has been evaluated. Each of the twelve patients so studies in this series has been treated with 5 Fluoro-Uracil. One patient was also treated by a macro-aggregated radioisotope therapeutic liver infusion and one by hepatic surgery. Background: Oscillatory rhythms during sleep, such as slow oscillations (SOs) and spindles and, most importantly, their coupling, are thought to underlie processes of memory consolidation. External slow oscillatory transcranial direct current stimulation (so-tDCS) with a frequency of 0.75 Hz has been shown to improve this coupling and memory consolidation; however, effects varied quite markedly between individuals, studies, and species. In this study, we aimed to determine how precisely the frequency of stimulation must match the naturally occurring SO frequency in individuals to best improve SO-spindle coupling. Moreover, we systematically tested stimulation durations necessary to induce changes., Materials and Methods: We addressed these questions by comparing so-tDCS with individualized frequency to standardized frequency of 0.75 Hz in a within-subject design with 28 older participants during napping while stimulation train durations were systematically varied between 30 seconds, 2 minutes, and 5 minutes., Results: Stimulation trains as short as 30 seconds were sufficient to modulate the coupling between SOs and spindle activity. Contrary to our expectations, so-tDCS with standardized frequency indicated stronger aftereffects regarding SO-spindle coupling than individualized frequency. Angle and variance of spindle maxima occurrence during the SO cycle were similarly modulated., Conclusions: In sum, short stimulation trains were sufficient to induce significant changes in sleep physiology, allowing for more trains of stimulation, which provides methodological advantages and possibly even larger behavioral effects in future studies. During slow-wave sleep, the brain is in a self-organized regime in which slow oscillations (SOs) between up- and down-states travel across the cortex. While an isolated piece of cortex can produce SOs, the brain-wide propagation of these oscillations are thought to be mediated by the long-range axonal connections. We address the mechanism of how SOs emerge and recruit large parts of the brain using a whole-brain model constructed from empirical connectivity data in which SOs are induced independently in each brain area by a local adaptation mechanism. Using an evolutionary optimization approach, good fits to human resting-state fMRI data and sleep EEG data are found at values of the adaptation strength close to a bifurcation where the model produces a balance between local and global SOs with realistic spatiotemporal statistics. Local oscillations are more frequent, last shorter, and have a lower amplitude. Global oscillations spread as waves of silence across the undirected brain graph, traveling from anterior to posterior regions. These traveling waves are caused by heterogeneities in the brain network in which the connection strengths between brain areas determine which areas transition to a down-state first, and thus initiate traveling waves across the cortex. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has urged many governments in the world to enforce a strict lockdown where all nonessential businesses are closed and citizens are ordered to stay at home. One of the consequences of this policy is a significant change in electricity consumption patterns. Since load forecasting models rely on calendar or meteorological information and are trained on historical data, they fail to capture the significant break caused by the lockdown and have exhibited poor performances since the beginning of the pandemic. In this paper we introduce two methods to adapt generalized additive models, alleviating the aforementioned issue. Using Kalman filters and fine-tuning allows to adapt quickly to new electricity consumption patterns without requiring exogenous information. The proposed methods are applied to forecast the electricity demand during the French lockdown period, where they demonstrate their ability to significantly reduce prediction errors compared to traditional models. Finally, expert aggregation is used to leverage the specificities of each predictions and enhance results even further.

The global increase in neurodegenerative disorders is one of the most crucial public health issues. Oral polyamine intake was shown to improve memory performance which is thought to be mediated at least in part via increased autophagy induced in brain cells. In Alzheimer's Disease, T-cells were identified as important mediators of disease pathology. Since autophagy is a central regulator of cell activation and cytokine production, we investigated the influence of polyamines on T-cell activation, autophagy, and the release of Th1/Th2 cytokines from blood samples of patients (n=22) with cognitive impairment or dementia in comparison to healthy controls (n=12) ex vivo . We found that spermine downregulated all investigated cytokines in a dose-dependent manner. Spermidine led to an upregulation of some cytokines for lower dosages, while high dosages downregulated all cytokines apart from upregulated IL-17A. Autophagy and T-cell activation increased in a dose-dependent manner by incubation with either polyamine. Although effects in patients were seen in lower concentrations, alterations were similar to controls.We provide novel evidence that supplementation of polyamines alters the function of T-cells. Given their important role in dementia, these data indicate a possible mechanism by which polyamines would help to prevent structural and cognitive decline in aging.

Establishing esterase assays allows the determination and comparison of esteratic activities of tissues of one organism and between organisms. We have developed a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) assay for the determination of S-acetylthiocholine (ATC) and p-nitrophenyl acetate (NPA) hydrolyzing activities of rat serum esterases based on ion pair chromatography with on-line radiochemical and ultraviolet (UV) detection. ATC is a substrate for cholinesterases, whereas NPA is cleaved by a variety of esterases and other proteins (e.g., cholinesterases, paraoxonase, carboxylesterase, albumin). Both substrates were incubated, simultaneously or separately, with rat serum to explore potential interferences between the enzymatic hydrolyses of the compounds. The ratio of the peak area of the (14)C-labeled substrates to the total peak area of the substrates and their corresponding cleavage products was compared with the UV quantitation of ATC and p-nitrophenolate (NP), the cleavage product of NPA, measured at 230 and 350 nm, respectively. The peak identity of ATC and NP was confirmed by electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS). The reaction rates of the assays using one substrate or both, as well as using radiochemical or UV detection, were equal. Moreover, the correlation between rat serum volumes and reaction rates was shown for both substrates. In conclusion, one can (i) choose between the two detection methods reliably, (ii) take advantage of monitoring both substrate and product by using radiochemical detection, and (iii) combine both substrates to determine esterase activities in rat serum and probably other biological matrices.

Oscillation of cyclic AMP and in the activity ratio of cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase and of glycogen phosphorylase with the cardiac cycle were demonstrated in the canine heart in situ. For tissue sampling an ECG (R-wave)-triggered, automatically working push-freeze-drill apparatus was developed which allows intraventricular cryobiopsies from the left ventricular muscle of anaesthetized open-chest dogs. The nucleotide cyclic AMP oscillated with the cardiac cycle during normal working condition, the higher cyclic AMP level occuring during systole. Cyclic GMP was assayed to be without oscillatory changes during the contraction-relaxation cycle. The rise in the activity ratio of protein kinase was found to coincide with the maximum in the level of cyclic AMP. Propranolol pretreatment prevents the transient in the level of the nucleotide as well as in the activity ratio of the kinase indicating i) a causal relationship between these changes and ii) a neurohumoral, beat-to-beat regulation by catecholamines released from the sympathetic nerve endings within the heart. Contrary the activity ratio of phosphorylase retains its transient changes during the cardiac cycle in the presence of propranolol, indicating a Ca-mediated activation of phosphorlase kinase during the contraction process.

The radiological appearances on double contrast barium enema examination of 14 cases of villous adenoma are described and illustrated. Problems of diagnosis and detection of malignancy are discussed. It is concluded that in the majority of cases a confident radiological assessment of benignancy or malignancy cannot be made. The importance of villous adenoma as a pre-cancerous condition and the high incidence of associated large bowel carcinoma are emphasized.
