2. Adiabatic decay of internal solitons due to the Earth rotation within the framework of the Gardner-Ostrovsky equation

Abstract

The adiabatic decay of different types of internal wave solitons caused by the Earth rotation is studied within the framework of the Gardner-Ostrovsky equation. The governing equation describing such processes includes quadratic and cubic nonlinear terms, as well as the Boussinesq and Coriolis dispersions. It is shown that at the early stage of evolution solitons gradually decay under the influence of weak Earth rotation. The characteristic decay time is derived for different types of solitons for positive and negative coefficient of cubic nonlinearity (both signs of that parameter may occur in the oceans). The coefficient of quadratic nonlinearity determines only a polarity of solitary wave. It is found that the adiabatic theory describes well the decay of solitons having bell-shaped profiles. In contrast to that, large amplitude table-top solitons, which can exist when the cubic nonlinear term is negative, are structurally unstable. Under the influence of Earth rotation they transfer first to the bell-shaped solitons, which decay then adiabatically. 8. Historical Memory Education for Peace and Justice: Definition of a Field

Abstract

This article proposes a new of field of research in social sciences education: Historical Memory Education (HME). Despite the large amount of educational experiences following the end of violent conflicts and totalitarian regimes during the twentieth century, historical memory has not been recognized as a field in educational research. From a review of research and experiences worldwide, the authors identify a new field in education research that cannot be reduced to peace education, bullying prevention, or history education, but that takes elements from all these fields, as well as from local pedagogical experiences, to face the challenge of healing the wounds of longstanding violent conflicts. This article organizes prior research in a comprehensive framework that describes the levels, pedagogical principles, and spaces of HME.

Abstract

Thyroid hormone is a critical determinant of cellular metabolism and differentiation. Precise tissue-specific regulation of the active ligand 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine (T3) is achieved by the sequential removal of iodine groups from the thyroid hormone molecule, with type 3 deiodinase (D3) comprising the major inactivating pathway that terminates the action of T3 and prevents activation of the prohormone thyroxine. Using cells endogenously expressing D3, we found that hypoxia induced expression of the D3 gene DIO3 by a hypoxia-inducible factor--dependent (HIF-dependent) pathway. D3 activity and mRNA were increased both by hypoxia and by hypoxia mimetics that increase HIF-1. Using ChIP, we found that HIF-1[alpha] interacted specifically with the DIO3 promoter, indicating that DIO3 may be a direct transcriptional target of HIF-1. Endogenous D3 activity decreased T3-dependent oxygen consumption in both neuronal and hepatocyte cell lines, suggesting that hypoxia-induced D3 may reduce metabolic rate in hypoxic tissues. Using a rat model of cardiac failure due to RV hypertrophy, we found that HIF-1[alpha] and D3 proteins were induced specifically in the hypertrophic myocardium of the RV, creating an anatomically specific reduction in local T3 content and action. Abstract

Type II 5'-iodothyronine deiodinase (D2), produces triiodothyronine ([T.sub.3]) and is stimulated by cold exposure via norepinephrine (NE) release in brown adipose tissue. Cultured rat brown adipocytes require [T.sub.3] for the adrenergic stimulation of D2 activity. D2 mRNA expression in cultured brown adipocytes is undetectable with the use of basal conditions or NE without [T.sub.3]. Full D2 expression is achieved using NE + [T.sub.3], especially after prolonged [T.sub.3] exposure. [[beta].sub.3]-Adrenergic agonists mimic the NE action, whereas cAMP analogs do not. Prolonged exposure to [T.sub.3] alone increases D2 mRNA. High [T.sub.3] doses (500 nM) inhibit the adrenergic stimulation of D2 activity while increasing D2 mRNA. The effects obtained with NE + [T.sub.3] or [T.sub.3] alone are suppressed by actinomycin, but not by cycloheximide, which leads to accumulation of short D2 mRNA transcripts. Prolonged or short exposure to [T.sub.3] did not change D2 mRNA half-life, but [T.sub.3] seemed to elongate it. In conclusion, [T.sub.3] is an absolute requirement for the adrenergic stimulation of D2 mRNA in brown adipocytes. Growth factor regulation of uncoupling protein-1 mRNA expression in brown adipocytes. Am J Physiol Cell Physiol 282: C105-C112, 2002. First published October 3, 2001; 10.1152/ ajpcell.01396.2000.--To study the effect of the mitogens epidermal growth factor (EGF), acidic and basic fibroblast growth factors (aFGF and bFGF), and vasopressin on brown adipocyte differentiation, we analyzed the expression of uncoupling protein-1 (UCP-1) mRNA. Quiescent brown preadipocytes express high levels of UCP-1 mRNA in response to triiodothyronine (T3) and norepinephrine (NE). The addition of serum or the mitogenic condition aFGF + vasopressin + NE or EGF + vasopressin + NE decreases UCP-1 mRNA. A second addition of mitogens further decreases UCP-1 mRNA. Treatment with aFGF or bFGF alone increases UCP-1 mRNA, whereas the addition of EGF or vasopressin dramatically reduces UCP-1 mRNA levels. The continuous presence of T3 increases UCP-1 mRNA levels in cells treated with EGF, aFGF, or bFGF. The effect of T3 on the stimulation of DNA synthesis also was tested. T3 inhibits the mitogenic activity of aFGF and bFGF. In conclusion, mitogens like aFGF or bFGF allow brown adipocyte differentiation, whereas EGF and vasopressin inhibit the differentiation process.
