Abstract

We investigate the astrophysics of radio-emitting star-forming galaxies and ac- tive galactic nuclei (AGNs), and elucidate their statistical properties in the radio band including luminosity functions, redshift distributions, and number counts at sub-mJy flux levels, that will be crucially probed by next-generation radio continuum surveys. Specifically, we exploit the model-independent approach by Mancuso et al. (2016a,b) to compute the star formation rate functions, the AGN duty cycles and the conditional probability of a star-forming galaxy to host an AGN with given bolometric luminosity. Coupling these ingredients with the radio emission properties associated to star formation and nuclear activity, we compute relevant statistics at different radio frequencies, and disentangle the relative con- tribution of star-forming galaxies and AGNs in different radio luminosity, radio flux, and redshift ranges. Finally, we highlight that radio-emitting star-forming galaxies and AGNs are expected to host supermassive black holes accreting with different Eddington ratio distributions, and to occupy different loci in the galaxy main sequence diagrams. Abstract

By means of the updated PARSEC database of evolutionary tracks of massive stars, we compute the integrated stellar light, the ionizing photon budget and the supernova rates of young simple stellar populations (SSPs), for different metallicities and IMF upper mass limits. Using CLOUDY we compute and include in the SSP spectra the neb- ular emission contribution. We also revisit the thermal and non-thermal radio emission contribution from young stars. Using GRASIL we can thus predict the panchromatic spectrum and the main recombination lines of any type of star-forming galaxy, including the effects of dust absorption and re-emission. We check the new models against the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of selected well-observed nearby galaxies. From the best-fit models we obtain a consistent set of star formation rate (SFR) calibrations at wavelengths ranging from ultraviolet (UV) to radio. We also provide analytical calibrations that take into account the dependence on metallcity and IMF upper mass limit of the SSPs. We show that the latter limit can be well constrained by combining information from the observed far infrared, 24 {\mu}m, 33 GHz and H{\alpha} luminosities. Another interesting property derived from the fits is that, while in a normal galaxy the attenuation in the lines is significantly higher than that in the nearby continuum, in individual star bursting regions they are similar, supporting the notion that this effect is due to an age selective extinction. Since in these conditions the Balmer decrement method may not be accurate, we provide relations to estimate the attenuation from the observed 24 {\mu}m or 33 GHz fluxes. 4. Changes in the Metabolic Profile of HIV Infected Subjects on Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Therapy (HAART)

Abstract

The metabolic profile of HIV/AIDS patient on HAART was investigated in comparison with HIV/AIDS patient who are HAART naive and also with the zero negative controls. Sixty (60) HIV subjects were used for the study and were carefully divided into two groups of thirty (30) each; group one were those on HAART and the other HAART naive while thirty (30) zero negative subjects were used as the control. Patients used for these studies are those who have been on the treatment for at least a year and not more than three years. Metabolic parameters assessed included serum total protein, albumin, globulin, electrolytes, creatinine and lipid profile. Results obtained reveals no significant (P > 0.05) changes in the serum electrolyte and creatinine concentrations in all groups and similar trend was also observed for total protein and albumin levels but a significant (P< 0.05) reduction was observed in the level of serum globulin concentration of patients on HAART (2.86±0.67) compared with the HAART naive (3.41±0.62). Abstract

Objective To systematically review and analyze clinical, diagnostic, and management trends in sellar and parasellar brown tumors reported in existing literature. Methods In this systematic review, PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases were searched for reported cases of sellar/parasellar brown tumors. Relevant titles and abstracts were screened in accordance to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses protocol. Articles meeting inclusion criteria were subjected to data extraction, summarization, and analysis. A rare case of parasellar brown tumor was also presented. Results Eight reports (including the current report) were eligible for inclusion. Mean patient age was 42.75 years. Reported symptoms included visual disturbances (n = 6), headache (n = 5), fatigue (n = 3), nausea/vomiting (n = 2), chest pain (n = 1), neck pain (n = 1), and dysphagia (n = 1). In cases where computed tomography findings were provided (n = 6), lesions were noted to be expansile and lytic. Lesions were hyperintense on T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (66.7%) and demonstrated contrast enhancement (83.3%). Histology unanimously showed multinucleated giant cells in a fibrovascular connective tissue stroma. Dramatic symptom resolution was noted in all patients who underwent resection of the sellar/parasellar brown tumor (n = 4; 50%). Conclusions Sellar/parasellar brown tumors are a rare, tertiary manifestation of hyperparathyroidism and can be elusive to diagnose. Diagnosis requires a high index of clinical suspicion in addition to comprehensive biochemical testing, imaging, and histopathologic analysis. Surgical extirpation is favored in cases where the lesion is causing compressive symptoms, or if it is unresponsive to management of hyperparathyroidism.

Abstract

Toxoplasmosis is a disease that can infect pregnant women, foetus, women of childbearing age and it is also zoonotic. The sero-prevalence of toxoplasmosis with its associated risk factors in two hundred and seventy-seven gravidae attending University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital was investigated to ascertain the current status of toxoplasmosis in Rivers State. Blood samples were collected from the subjects through veno-puncture, and the blood tests performed using the rapid test kits for Toxoplasma gondii IgG and IgM antibodies following manufacturer's instructions. Commercial pregnancy test kits and HIV test kits were used to confirm their pregnancy and HIV status. Out of the 277 pregnant subjects examined, the overall prevalence was 5(1.8%) for T. gondii IgG antibody and 14(6.9%) positive for HIV. None of the HIV pregnant subjects were positive for toxoplasmosis. Chi-square analysis was used to assess the distribution of toxoplasmosis and other variables. The age groups 20 -29 years and 30-39 years had the highest sero-prevalence rates of 3(60%) and 2(40%) respectively for IgG while age group 40-49 years recorded no sero-prevalence. Exposure related sero-prevalence showed that eating of raw vegetables, undercooked meat, and exposure to contaminated soil through farming were more sensitive risk factors associated with toxoplasmosis than others. There was no statistically significant difference observed among those using cat as pets (P>0.05). A higher statistically significant difference was observed among the subjects that ate raw vegetables and drank untreated water (P<0.05) compared to those who ate cooked vegetables and drank treated water. The need for intensified health campaign to enlighten the society and pregnant mothers on the dangers of acquiring this neglected tropical disease-toxoplasmosis- and how to prevent it has been advocated. Abstract

Optimal products design for producing standard ceramic porcelain products from Ohiya clay was determined in this study using desirability function analysis. Results revealed that the alumino-silicate constitutes 91% of the total mineralogical composition of Ohiya clay and 42:32:20 at a firing temperature of 1250/1300 oC; 42:33:17 at a firing temperature of 1300 oC; 41:32:27 at a firing temperature of 1000 oC as the optimal mix of the clay, feldspar and silica for producing standard low/high voltage insulators, tiles and tablewares respectively. The production of the 11 kV electric insulator, 400 × 400 mm tile, serving dish at optimal settings are respectively six hundred and twenty-five naira (₦625), three hundred and twenty-two naira (₦322), three hundred and four seven (₦347) against the market prices of one thousand naira (₦1000), three hundred and fifty naira (₦350), four hundred and twenty naira (₦420) respectively. This translates to 60%, 9% and 21% in profit for these products. Hence, adoption of the optimal mixing ratio as well as exploitation of this natural resource is highly recommended.

Abstract

Metals used in industries are exposed to several processes such as acid cleaning, pickling, and descaling, which leads to corrosion. A good measure of corrosion control has been achieved by reducing the metal impurity content, by corrosion inhibition, the use of modification techniques, and the incorporation of alloying elements. However, the use of corrosion inhibitors seems to be the most economical and practical of the methods. Besides, the use of fibrous plant biomass as corrosion inhibitors has become important as a suitable substitute for the toxic chromates, phosphates, and arsenic-based inhibitors. The constituents in the fibrous plant biomass extracts react with the metal ions on a corroding metal surface forming organometallic complexes. The recent introduction of Density Functional Theory (DFT) in the theoretical study of the electronic structures elucidates the adsorption modes and the individual contributions of the plant extracts. The DFT has proven to be a significant contribution to the conventional methods based on gravimetry, gasometry, and electrochemical investigations for studying corrosion inhibition. Abstract

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS Testicular cancer is the most common malignancy of young males. Limited reports describe perioperative and long-term outcomes after surgical resection of metastatic, cervical, non-seminomatous germ cell tumors (NSGCT). The objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness and safety of cervical lymphadenectomy in the management of metastatic NSGCT. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective case series. METHODS A single institution, retrospective review from 1998 to 2020 of patients with metastatic NSGCT who underwent cervical lymphadenectomy was conducted. Clinicopathological, surgical, and postoperative data were collected and analyzed. RESULTS Sixty-eight predominantly white (91.0%) male patients with mean age 33.0 ± 11.3 years were included. Most (82.2%) presented with stage III disease at initial diagnosis. All patients had undergone primary platinum-based chemotherapy 1.0 to 22.7 months prior to selective ND. Surgery mainly involved nodal levels III (67.6%), IV (92.6%) and/or Vb (77.9%) and was frequently performed with concomitant thoracoabdominal NSGCT resections (63.2%). Cervical specimens predominantly revealed mature teratoma (83.8%) as solitary (69.1%) or component of mixed (14.7%) NSGCT. Ten (14.7%) perioperative complications occurred as vocal cord paresis (n = 6) from thoracic surgery and chyle leakage (n = 4). All resolved conservatively except two vocal cord paralyzes that required surgical repair due to tumor involvement of vagus nerve. Six instances of cervical recurrence occurred at median 12.5 (range, 5.8-38.6) months from ND, all re-demonstrating purely mature teratoma. The two-year cervical, non-cervical, and overall recurrence-free survivals were 83%, 55%, and 55%, respectively. Two-year disease-free and overall survivals were both 93%. Abstract

Background: Internal carotid artery (ICA) injuries represent a rare, potentially fatal complication of endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery (EESBS). The use of adenosine to induce transient hypotension and facilitate management of high-flow, high-pressure arterial lesions has been well-documented in neuro-endovascular literature. A similar setting in which adenosine-induced hypotension may prove beneficial is during the management of major vascular injury encountered during EESBS. Methods: A case of ICA injury and subsequent repair during EESBS is presented. Results: A 74-year-old female underwent endoscopic transsphenoidal resection for a recurrent pituitary adenoma. During suprasellar resection, the right cavernous ICA was inadvertently injured resulting in brisk bleeding. Immediate vascular tamponade was applied, and a crushed muscle graft was obtained. Two intravenous doses of adenosine were administered in quick succession to produce transient hypotension and facilitate repair of the injury with the graft. Neurovascular imaging revealed a small pseudoaneurysm which remained stable throughout the postoperative course. The patient underwent definitive stent embolization of the pseudoaneurysm 1 month following discharge. Conclusion: Prompt repair of ICA injury during EESBS is crucial, but often limited by poor visualization. Adenosine-induced hypotension has demonstrated great efficacy as an adjuvant in neurovascular clipping of intracranial aneurysms and remains a valuable tool for the endoscopic skull-base surgeon as well. In cases with high risk for ICA injury, adenosine should be readily available.

Abstract

The mishap of building collapse does not sound strange again in many sub-Saharan cities especially Nigeria due to the frequency of its occurrence, and architects are most vulnerable to blame because of their leadership position in building delivery. Evidence in literature has suggested a critical appraisal of built environment professionals' role to tackle the menace. However, the consequence of the role of architects as prime consultants hasn't been adequately investigated. Using a systematic review of literature for reported cases of building collapse in Nigeria between 2009 and 2019, the paper examines the causes of building collapse and enumerated specific areas members of the architecture profession in the building industry are implicated. The result reveals that the major causes of building collapse are the use of substandard materials, structural defects, and the use of incompetent personnel indicating a lapse in leadership and supervisory function. Although from direct observation, the study highlights deontology as the bane of building collapse in Nigeria and recommends among others that: Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) should ensure that only certified building materials are allowed in the market; soil tests, environmental impact analysis, and structural analysis should be mandatory as well as proper supervision of construction works by competent professionals with strict law enforcement. Background: Health Promotion has taken the center stage as a cost-effective means to reduce the rising burden of Non - communicable diseases. Objectives: This study aimed at assessing the health promoting lifestyle profile and associated factors among civil servants in Enugu metropolis, Nigeria. Design: This was a descriptive cross - sectional study. Setting: The study was conducted at the secretariat complex of Enugu State government. Subjects: The study participants included 390 civil servants in Enugu metropolis, Nigeria selected using multistage sampling technique. Results: The mean age of respondents was 37.85 ± 10.06 years. The total HPLP II mean score was 127.65 ± 15.36 and 97.4% had good profile. Among the subscales, spiritual growth had the highest mean score, 24.68 ± 3.61 and 97.9% had good profile. Associated factors statistically significantly predicted overall HPLP II, F(12,377) = 4.367, P < 0.0001, R2 = 0.122, health responsibility, F(12,377) = 2.176, P = 0.012, R2 = 0.065, spiritual growth, F(12,377) = 3.578, P < 0.0001, R2 = 0.102, physical activity, F(12,377) = 3.850, P < 0.0001, R2 = 0.109, interpersonal relationship, F(12,377) = 4.675, P < 0.0001, R2 = 0.130, nutrition, F(12,377) = 4.016, P < 0.0001, R2 = 0.113, except stress, F(12,377) = 1.759, P = 0.053, R2 = 0.053. 23. Use of Adenosine to Facilitate Localization and Repair of Internal Carotid Artery Injury during Skull Base Surgery: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Abstract

Background: Internal carotid artery (ICA) injuries represent a rare, potentially fatal complication of endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery (EESBS). The use of adenosine to induce transient hypotension and facilitate management of high-flow, high-pressure arterial lesions has been well-documented in neuro-endovascular literature. A similar setting in which adenosine-induced hypotension may prove beneficial is during the management of major vascular injury encountered during EESBS. Methods: A case of ICA injury and subsequent repair during EESBS is presented. Results: A 74-year-old female underwent endoscopic transsphenoidal resection for a recurrent pituitary adenoma. During suprasellar resection, the right cavernous ICA was inadvertently injured resulting in brisk bleeding. Immediate vascular tamponade was applied, and a crushed muscle graft was obtained. Two intravenous doses of adenosine were administered in quick succession to produce transient hypotension and facilitate repair of the injury with the graft. Neurovascular imaging revealed a small pseudoaneurysm which remained stable throughout the postoperative course. The patient underwent definitive stent embolization of the pseudoaneurysm 1 month following discharge. Conclusion: Prompt repair of ICA injury during EESBS is crucial, but often limited by poor visualization. Adenosine-induced hypotension has demonstrated great efficacy as an adjuvant in neurovascular clipping of intracranial aneurysms and remains a valuable tool for the endoscopic skull-base surgeon as well. Abstract

Background : Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) associated tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global public health challenge, with an estimated 1.4 million patients worldwide. Co-infection with HIV leads to challenges in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Objectives : The aim of this study was to assess treatment outcomes of a cohort of smear positive TB-HIV co-infected patients over a five-year study period. Methods : A retrospective cohort study of 600 smear-positive tuberculosis patients registered at the chest unit of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu from January 2008 to December 2012 was done. The data was analyzed using SPSS Version 17. Results : One hundred and three (17.2%) of the patients were co-infected with TB/HIV, while 398 (66.3%) and 99 (16.5%) were HIV negative and unknown respectively. Among the co-infected patients, 45(43.7%) were cured as against 222(55.8%) in the TBHIV negatives (Z=4.53, p=0.000, 95%CI= 0.12-0.34). Respectively in the TB-HIV co-infected and TB-HIV negative patients, treatment completed were 21(20.4%) and 71(17.8%) (Z=9.15, p=0.000, 95%= 0.4035-0.60); defaulted 19(18.5%) vs 70 (17.6%) (Z=9.29, p=0.000, 95%CI=0.42-0.60), died 10(9.7%) vs. 6(1.5%) (Z=1.22, p=0.224, 95%CI= -0.0286-0.1086), and failures were 1(0.9%) vs. 7(1.8%) (Z=2.48, p=0.013, 95%CI=0.04-0.10). Treatment success rate was lower in TB-HIV co-infected patients, 64.1% compared to TB-HIV negative patients with 73.6%. Also those that defaulted among the TB-HIV co-infected patients (18.5%) were higher than 17.6% among TB-HIV negative patients, a difference of 0.9%. Conclusion : Findings demonstrate that HIV co-infection affects TB treatment outcomes adversely. Treatment adherence, timely and sustained access to antiretroviral therapy for TB/HIV co-infected patients are important. Abstract

Research interests in the psychological wellbeing of caregivers has continued to attract heightened attention. Thus, this study presented an examination of the predictive roles of occupational stress and emotional intelligence on psychological wellbeing. Participants, who were 270 nurses that were selected through the proportionate stratified random sampling technique, responded to Scales of Psychological Wellbeing (SPWB), Occupational Stress Inventory (OSI) and Emotional Intelligence Scale (EIS). Results from the multiple regression showed no link between occupational stress psychological wellbeing, but emotional intelligence predicted the psychological wellbeing. Furthermore, the study found that length of service did not significantly predict psychological wellbeing. Lastly, it revealed that occupational stress, emotional intelligence and length of service jointly predicted psychological wellbeing. Training and development opportunities to enhance nurses’ emotional intelligence should be encouraged in Government-owned hospitals to facilitate optimum psychological wellbeing of nurses.

30. Blood pressure profile in children aged 3 - 5 years: Relationship to age, weight, height, gender and body mass index

Background. Blood pressure measurement is not commonly done in children. Most of the studies done in Nigeria so far on blood pressure and hypertension are in older children. Objectives. To determine the blood pressure profile in children aged 3 - 5 years, establish the relationship between their blood pressure and age, body mass index (BMI), height, weight and gender, and compare the results with available values. Methods. A total of 603 apparently healthy nursery school children aged 3 - 5 years were randomly recruited from three nursery schools: two in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, and one in Asaba, Delta State. Their blood pressure, height and weight were measured and their BMI calculated. Results. Of the 603 pupils, 311 (51.6%) were males and 292 (48.4%) were females. Blood pressure ranged from 70/40 to 120/90, with mean (standard deviation) systolic values for pupils aged 3 years 87.5 (8.3) mmHg, aged 4 years 93.5 (8.5) mmHg and aged 5 years 93.5 (8.4) mmHg, and mean diastolic values for pupils aged 3 years 55.1 (9.1) mmHg, aged 4 years 61.2 (8.3) mmHg and aged 5 years 61.5 (7.8) mmHg. No gender difference was found, but age, height and weight all correlated positively with blood pressure. The values found in this study were similar to those in the literature. Conclusion. The mean systolic and diastolic blood pressures of the age group studied were 91.3 (8.9) mmHg and 59.0 (9.0) mmHg. The blood pressure values obtained in this study were similar to published values in the literature.

Abstract

Background: Poor referral linkages had been noted and documented by various researchers on the health care delivery system in Nigeria. This study is designed to find out the situation of referral practices and make recommendations on how to improve the situation.Materials and Methods: A quasi-experimental study was carried out to determine the effect of health education and training on the Knowledge, attitude and practices of patient referral by primary health care workers in Mushin and Surulere Local Government Areas of Lagos State of Nigeria.A total sample of 170 primary health care workers was involved in the study: 85 in each of the Local Government Areas. The study involved three stages, the pre-intervention, the intervention phase, and a post intervention phase of the study.Results: Analysis of the responses of the two groups showed that there was no statistically significant difference in the responses in the areas concerning their attitude towards, and knowledge of patient referral at the pre-intervention phase.In the post-intervention phase the differences in the responses between the two groups in the area of practice of patient referral were statistically significant. In the control group 18.8% of the workers used the two-way referral form in the pre-intervention phase. This rose to 27.1% in the post intervention phase. In the experimental group, 17.5% used the two-way referral form in the pre-intervention phase, and this rose to 69.4% in the post intervention phase.Conclusion: The conclusion was that education and training on patient referral could improve the patient referral activities of primary health care workers.Keywords: Health education, Training, Patients, Referrals

Abstract

Crosses were made among seven inbred lines of Egusi melon (Colocynthis citrullus L.), White, Blue, Elongated, Sewere, OV-I, W.SE and B.SE. The parents and the progenies (F1, F2 and BCs) were evaluated for some growth and yield attributes. The white inbred parent was found to have the highest seed yield among the parents. The F1s were also found to perform better than their parents in the yield attributes. The hybrid (OV-I x W.SE) had the highest seed yield/plant. Delayed seedling emergence and flowering influenced seed yield negatively while large number of branches/plant and vine length enhanced seed yield/plant. All other yield attributes correlated positively with seed yield/plant, an indication that any of them can be used as an index for selection for seed yield in the crop. Abstract

For efficient reservoir management and long-term field development strategies, most geologists and asset managers pay special attention to reservoir chance of success. To minimise this uncertainty, a good understanding of reservoir presence and adequacy is required for better ranking of infill opportunities and optimal well placement. This can be quite challenging due to insufficient data and complexities that are typically associated with areas with compounded tectonostratigraphic framework. For the present paper, data analysis and variography were used firstly to examine possible geological factors that determine directions in which reservoirs show minimum heterogeneity for both discrete and continuous properties; secondly, to determine the maximum range and degree of variability of key reservoir petro-physical properties from the variogram, and thirdly, to highlight possible geological controls on reservoir distribution trends as well as areas with optimal reservoir quality. Discrete properties evaluated were lithology and genetic units, while continuous properties examined were porosity and net-to-gross (NtG). From the variogram analysis, the sandy lithology shows minimum heterogeneity in east-west (E–W) and north-south (N–S) directions, for Upper Shoreface Sands (USF) and Fluvial/Tidal Channel Sands (FCX/TCS), respectively. Porosity and NtG both show the least heterogeneity in the E–W axis for reservoirs belonging to both Upper Shoreface and Fluvial Channel environments with porosity showing a slightly higher range than NtG. The vertical ranges for both continuous properties did not show a clear trend. The Sequential Indicator Simulation (SIS) and Object modelling algorithm were used for modelling the discrete properties, while Sequential Gaussian Simulation (SGS) was used for modelling of the continuous properties. Results from this exercise show that depositional environment, sediment provenance, topographical slope, sub-regional structural trends, shoreline orientation and longshore currents, could have significant impacts on reservoir spatial distribution and property trends. This understanding could be applied in reservoir prediction and for generating stochastic estimates of petrophysical properties for nearby exploration assets of similar depositional environments.
