Abstract

Oaths and vows in Hebrew Bible function as poetic conventions: instruments with which the contours of plot are shaped and the subtleties of characterisation are defined. When an oath or vow is spoken, the result is heightened suspense and anticipation-will the promise be kept or broken, and by what means? Whether fulfilled or forgotten, these emphatic statements also shed light on the characters who speak and (in some cases) refute them. Particularly informative are the idiosyncrasies of oaths and vows: the points at which any given promise differs from the expected formulae established for emphatic statements in Hebrew Bible. What follows is an examination of four case studies (the book of Ruth, 1 Sam 24-26, Judg 11, and 1 Sam 1-2), each one a narrative that revolves around an oath or vow. The emphatic statements featured at the centre of these texts diverge from their expected formulae in illuminating ways; in addition, each promise is spoken by or with regard to a prominent female character. The representation of female characters in Hebrew Bible is an oft-debated subject and therefore serves as a prime backdrop for the revelatory capacity of oaths and vows as instruments of poesis in this context.

Abstract

Ritual in Deuteronomy explores the symbolic world of Deuteronomy's ritual covenant and curses through a lens of religious studies and anthropology, drawing on previously unexamined Mesopotamian material.This book focuses on the ritual material in Deuteronomy including commands regarding sacrifice, prayer objects, and especially the dramatic ritual enactment of the covenant including curses. The book's most unique feature is an entirely new comparative study of Deut 27–30 with two ritual texts from Mesopotamia. No studies to date have undertaken a comparison of Deut 27–30 with ancient Near Eastern ritual texts outside of the treaty oath tradition. This fresh comparison illuminates how the ritual life of ancient Israel shaped the literary form of Deuteronomy and concludes that the performance of oaths was a social strategy, addressing contemporary anxieties and reinforcing systems of cultural power.This book offers a fascinating comparative study which will be of interest to undergraduate and graduate students in biblical studies, classical Hebrew, theology, and ancient Near Eastern studies. Abstract

The eponymous protagonist of the biblical story of Ruth, a Moabite widow, is so desperate to follow her widowed mother-in-law back to Israel that she swears an oath. Regardless of the translation one may choose, the sense is the same: Ruth promises to stick by Naomi's side for at least as long as they both shall live. Ruth's intention with respect to the two widows'proximity once they cross the final river is not so unanimous in the translations, however. According to the NRSV, Ruth says:(1) “May the Lord do thus and so to me, and more as well, if even death parts me from you!”The njpsv is representative of many other translations with its rendering:(2) “Thus and more may the Lord do to me if anything but death parts me from you.”The difference may seem trivial, but the contradiction between the italicized phrases is total. Either death will not ultimately separate them, or it will, in Ruth's view. The issue here is not a theological one, nor is this an archaeological issue. Rather, the issue is of a linguistic nature. What does the Hebrew phrase mean?The solution to the problem is fairly straightforward. The first step is to recognize that Ruth's statement is an oath. Oaths often employ formulaic, elliptical phrases. Therefore, it is necessary to gather together in one place as many of these formulas as possible so that the patterns, tendencies, and divergences may be seen within a larger matrix. Conklin's study intriguingly compiles precisely these phrases and formulas in order to solve the mystery of interpreting Biblical Hebrew oath formulas.

Abstract

When Job loses everything, it may seem that what he has left are words. Yet, testing the limits of language in his new situation through a series of curses and oaths, Job becomes increasingly aware that his previously powerful words have been sapped of their former force. Although commonly supposed that, in his final oath of ch. 31, Job effectively forces God to answer him, this article argues that Job's call for God's response is a ruse, based on his experience of God's silence and absence. In ch. 31, Job speaks seemingly powerful words, fully aware of their powerlessness; his aim is to invest them with the power they lack by convincing his hearers that they are in fact powerful. 5. Trials of Conscience and the Story of Conscience.

Abstract

This essay analyzes the trials of conscience presented in two medieval interrogation narratives, the Testimony of William Thorpe and the Letter of Richard Wyche. Written by followers of the radical theologian John Wyclif, these are the only surviving texts from medieval England that describe heresy inquisitions from the perspective of the accused. Despite similarities between the two authors and legal proceedings, the texts are strikingly different. Thorpe produces a competing public narrative to the official account of his movement, embracing his chance to share his conscientious convictions. By contrast, Wyche's cautious text reflects distaste for the legal technology used to test his conscience, a loyalty oath. He considers public oaths inadequate vehicles for coming to grips with his inner life, or for conveying his religious beliefs. The broader implication is that trials of conscience prompt conscience to 'tell its story,' defining itself in relation to the demands of public, coercive forces. In particular, oaths - pointed and memorable - are useful not only to narrators such as Wyche and Thorpe, but also to officials creating public narratives of a heresy defeated. Oaths produce coinciding narrative, personal, and political crises, in which the conflicting demands of public and private open to view and enter into negotiations. The criterion of discontinuity argues that there is no parallel to Jesus' total prohibition of oaths in the Jewish Scriptures, the intertestamental literature prior to 70 C.E., or the NT. The Jewish Scriptures take oaths for granted and imposes them in a few cases. Apart from Jas 5:12, the NT knows of no prohibition; Paul uses oaths with abandon. The criterion of multiple attestation argues that Jas 5:12 represents an independent tradition of the prohibition; Jas 5:12 is parallel to Matt 5:34-37 in both content and structure; James has other examples of Jesus' sayings woven into his epistle without attribution; and Jas 5:12 is at odds with James' treatment of the Law in the rest of his epistle. Jesus remains faithful to the Law by bringing it to its intended meaning, penetrating to the essence of its teaching. If the letter of the Law is violated, its spirit is upheld: the issue is not the oaths themselves, but the importance of unqualified truthfulness. This too is the meaning of the same material in Jas 5:12.
