This annual report covers the background and recent accomplishments of the Adult Career Counseling Center (ACCC) at Oakland University, Rochester, Michigan. This report discusses a study that examined the perceived credibility of children with learning disabilities once they received instruction in a procedure to increase recall during narrative testimony. Narrative Elaboration Training (NET) helps children to develop memory skills by teaching strategies for remembering the details that are expected in questioning on the witness stand. It consists of four organizational categories cues that have been studied as triggers for children's event knowledge: participants, settings, actions, and conversation/affective states. Each topic is depicted in a simple drawing on flash cards that are used as cues to remind children to elaborate when possible. Adults (n=202) rated the credibility in both cued and free recall from a child who received the training, compared to a control. A significant difference was found in six of the eight credibility dimensions. The child who received NET was rated as more able to narrate, likeable, and nervous. The control child was rated as more confident, consistent, and outgoing. No significant difference was found in speech strength or believability. The report argues that although the data failed to show the child who received the training as being perceived more credible overall, he was seen as more capable of narrative. The year 2001-02 marks the Adult Career Counseling Center's (ACCC's) nineteenth year of service, during which career advisors saw 102 community clients for over 300 hours of counseling. ACCC provides advising services at no charge for adults who are seeking guidance with career-related issues, including career exploration and planning. The computer-assisted career guidance programs used in ACCC are Career Explorer (Bridges), Michigan Occupational Information System, and, coming soon, Strong Interest Inventory. Other services include use of other assessment instruments; a collection of print materials; telephone assistance; and referrals. For a number of years, ACCC and the Practicum Counseling Center (PCC) have had a mutually beneficial partnership, with referral of ACCC clients to PCC for their more comprehensive array of services. Most clients have rated their overall experience, computer guidance programs, and other ACCC resources, and advisor skills as outstanding. Marketing and public relations have included public service announcements, bulletin boards, brochures, and workshops. During its 18 years of service, the Adult Career Counseling Center (ACCC) at Oakland University in Oakland, California, has provided career exploration and planning opportunities to more than 11,000 community adults at no charge. The following were among ACCC's activities in 2000-2001: (1) assisted clients in using the DISCOVER for Adults and Colleges, CX Bridges, O*Net, and MIOS (Michigan Occupational Information System) computer-assisted career guidance systems; (2) administered various career assessment instruments and maintained a collection of print materials to supplement the services provided; (3) provided initial and follow-up counseling sessions with ACCC advisors; (4) coordinated activities with the Practicum Counseling Center; (5) upgraded its computer-assisted guidance program software and hardware; (6) collected detailed data on client demographics to better meet clients' needs; (7) conducted marketing and public relations to increase public awareness of ACCC's services; and (8) promoted advisors' professional development through inservice training, research, and conference participation. Appendixes constitute more than two-thirds of the document and contain the following items: the ACCC disclosure statement; a description of DISCOVER and CX Bridges; descriptions of auxiliary grant supported services; a brief report of the Pontiac ACCC; the ACCC brochure; and an overview of career counseling resources at Oakland University. For 17 years, the Adult Career Counseling Center (ACCC) at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, has provided computer-assisted career guidance systems and career counseling services to a culturally diverse clientele of more than 11,000 adults living in the local community. The ACCC's goals are as follows: (1) provide career exploration and planning opportunities to community adults at no cost; (2) train faculty, staff, and students in the use of computer-assisted career guidance programs; and (3) support research efforts to improve understanding of the career development sphere and thereby promote better career guidance practices for adults. The ACCC's services include exploring occupational information, facilitating self-awareness, assisting in resume preparation, developing interviewing skills, and offering referral information. Of those clients who completed the ACCC's exit survey between September 1999 and June 2000, 97% rated the center's services as outstanding. (Twelve figures are included. The Adult Career Counseling Center (ACCC) at Oakland University provides career exploration and planning opportunities to community adults at no cost; trains faculty, staff, and students in the use of computer-assisted career guidance programs; and supports research efforts for a better understanding of career development resources. Clients typically attend between three and five sessions to explore the computerized career guidance programs and discuss possible action plans for the future. During the ACCC's 15th year, several changes were initiated to improve customer service: (1) incorporation of the Internet and World Wide Web during client sessions to bring clients up to date on the advanced technology in career development; (2) development of a new website and e-mail address; (3) redesign of the center brochure; (4) development and implementation of a more comprehensive marketing plan, which resulted in a substantial increase in the number of clients using ACCC services; (5) refinement of the networked computer system; (6) implementation and refinement of the computerized system for maintaining client records and usage statistics; (7) implementation of redesigned group inservice training for practicum students using the library's computer laboratory; (8) evaluation of the group inservice training and subsequent revision to smaller groups to facilitate learning of the Windows version of DISCOVER. In 1996-97, the Adult Career Counseling Center (ACCC) at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, enhanced its operation by doing the following: implementing a new computer system to network various software packages; creating and implementing a computerized system to maintain ACCC client records and usage statistics; developing an ACCC policy and procedures manual to provide continuity and guidance for new ACCC advisors; providing a more comprehensive service; developing a disclosure statement to foster better client understanding of the ACCC's services; and redesigning the inservice training for practicum students. During 1996-97, the ACCC served 492 clients (331 community clients and 161 practicum or careers class counseling students). Clients' reasons for visiting the ACCC were as follows: career search, 58%; inservice, 31.6%; job information, 28.5%; decision making, 17.7%; values clarification, 9.5%; resume assistance, 7.5%; and academic information, 6.0%. Client ratings of the ACCC's computer information system were as follows: extremely helpful, 74%; helpful, 22%; and somewhat helpful, 4%. (Twelve graphs are included. During 1995-1996, the Adult Career Counseling Center (ACCC) at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, provided the following services at no charge to 779 adult clients: career information, advice in resume preparation/interviewing skills, and referral information. Four graduate assistants from Oakland University's Master of Arts in Counseling Program facilitated the services. The following computer-assisted career guidance systems were also available to clients: DISCOVER for colleges and adults; System of Interactive Guidance and Information Plus; Michigan Occupational Information System; Resume Writer; CHOICES CT; FOCUS II, and the Internet. Of the ACCC's clients, 74% were female 48% were between the ages of 20 and 31 years, 85% were white, 42% had a Bachelor's degree, and 44% were employed full time. Of those clients who completed the ACCC's exit survey, 95% considered the ACCC's computer services extremely helpful/helpful and 100% considered the guidance they obtained from advisors extremely helpful/helpful. The ACCC uses numerous public relations strategies (referrals, visitors, press releases, outreach efforts, projects, conferences), and maintains an inservice training program. According to the report, the ACCC has provided services for more than 9,000 adults during its 12 years of operation. A majority of those served were college graduates, about three-quarters were women, and many were in stages of life transitions. Oakland University's Adult Career Counseling Center (ACCC) has provided computer-assisted career guidance and career counseling services to more than 8,500 adults since it was opened in fall 1982. During its 1993-94 operating year, the ACCC provided services to 423 females and 133 males, 87.8% of whom were white, 75.6% of whom were between the ages of 20 and 49, 50.9% of whom hold bachelor's degrees, and 41.0% of whom were employed full time. The ACCC relocated from two large rooms to four private offices and a reception area and continued to conduct activities consistent with the following program goals: provide services career exploration and planning opportunities to community adults at no charge; train faculty, staff, and students in using career guidance practices for adults; and support research efforts to improve understanding of the career development sphere and ultimately promote better career guidance. The ACCC gave community members access to following computer-based career information and guidance systems: DISCOVER for Colleges and Adults, System of Interactive Guidance and Information Plus (SIGI PLUS), and Michigan Occupational Information System (MOIS). This report profiles the Adult Career Counseling Center (ACCC) at Oakland University, Michigan. Conceived in 1982, the Center provides services for adults seeking career guidance. The ACCC supplies career information, counseling, advice in preparation and interviewing skills, and referral information, all at no charge. The ACCC employed computers for career development from the beginning and included in this guide is a description of the three computer-assisted career guidance systems currently in use: (1) DISCOVER for Colleges and Adults; (2) System of Interactive Guidance and Information Plus (SIGI PLUS); and (3) Michigan Occupational Information System (MOIS). Client demographics are furnished via charts and graphs and are broken down by gender. The center's performance was assessed through exit forms and case studies. Through public relations, in-service training, and coordination with other service centers, the ACCC sought to increase its visibility in the community. Included are research results on career development, the research for which was conducted on site. The overview closes with plans for improving services at the ACCC. Two appendices summarize information on a sister counseling center and on grant-supported services for the ACCC. (RJM)

A description of the Adult Career Counseling Center is followed by descriptions of several computer-assisted career guidance systems, including DISCOVER for Colleges and Adults, System of Interactive Guidance and Information Plus (SIGI PLUS), and the Michigan Occupational Information System. The next sections focus on client demographic information, in-service training, public relations, and an analysis of client responses to the Adult Career Counseling Center exit form. Coordination with the Practicum Counseling Center also is discussed. A section on research describes past research supported by the center; current research being conducted at the center, including studies of factors affecting a woman's career decision making; and on-going research, including studies on the sex-role orientation and occupational self-efficacy of adult women, the applicability of action research to the counseling profession, and a survey of university-supported community career counseling programs.
