1. Coupling quantum-like cognition with the neuronal networks within generalized probability theory

Abstract

The recent years are characterized by intensive applications of the methodology and mathematical apparatus of quantum theory, quantum-like modeling, in cognition, psychology, and decision making. In spite of the successful applications of this approach to a variety of psychological effects, e.g., the order, conjunction, disjunction, and response replicability effects, one may (but need not) feel dissatisfaction due to the absence of clear coupling to the neurophysiological processes in the brain. For the moment, this is just a phenomenological approach. In this paper we construct the quantum-like representation of the networks of communicating neurons. It is based not on standard quantum theory, but on generalized probability theory (GPT) with the emphasis of the operational measurement approach. We employ GPT's version which is based on ordered linear state space (instead of complex Hilbert space). A network of communicating neurons is described as a weighted ordered graph that in turn is encoded by its weight matrix. The state space of weight matrices is embedded in GPT with effect-observables and state updates within measurement instruments theory. The latter plays the crucial role. This GPT based model shows the basic quantum-like effects, as e.g. the order, non-repeatability, and disjunction effects; the latter is also known as interference of decisions. This GPT coupling also supports quantum-like modeling in medical diagnostic for neurological diseases, as depression and epilepsy. 2. Routing Light Emission from Monolayer MoS$_2$ by Mie Resonances of Crystalline Silicon Nanospheres

Abstract

A dielectric Mie-resonant nanoantenna is capable of controlling the directionality of the emission from nearby quantum emitters through the excitation of multiple degenerate Mie resonances. A crystalline silicon nanosphere (Si NS) is a promising candidate for a dielectric nanoantenna because crystalline Si has a large refractive index (3.8 at 650 nm) and the small imaginary part of a complex refractive index (0.015 at 650 nm) as an optical material. In this work, we control the emission directionality of excitons supported by monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (1L-TMDCs) using a Si NS. We first discuss the condition to extract the emission preferentially towards the Si NS side from the analytical calculations. We then study the photoluminescence (PL) of 1L-TMDCs on which differently sized single Si NSs are placed. We show that the PL spectral shape strongly depends on the emission direction, and that the emission toward the Si NS side (top) with respect to the opposite side (bottom) is the largest at wavelengths between the magnetic dipole and electric dipole Mie resonances of a Si NS. Finally, we quantitatively discuss the spectral shape of the top-to-bottom ratio from numerical simulations., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

3. Development of a high-power ultraviolet laser system and observation of fast coherent Rydberg excitation of ytterbium

Abstract

We present the development of a high-power ultraviolet laser system operating at a wavelength of 325 nm for Rydberg excitation from the ${}^3\mathrm{P}_2$ state of ytterbium. Utilizing a two-stage frequency doubling scheme, we achieved an output power exceeding 800 mW. The system effectively suppresses frequency noise in the MHz range, which is critical for achieving high Rydberg excitation fidelity, through the use of a filtering cavity. Using this system, we demonstrated coherent excitation of the $(6s71s){}^3\mathrm{S}_1$ Rydberg state with a Rabi frequency of 2.13(3) MHz. Combined with our successful manipulations on the ${}^1\mathrm{S}_0-{}^3\mathrm{P}_2$ transition, this work represents a foundational step toward achieving high-fidelity Rydberg excitation, enabling advancements in quantum simulation and computing with neutral atom arrays.

4. Quantum set theory: Equality and order of internal reals defined through different quantum conditionals

Abstract

In quantum logic, there is a well-known arbitrariness in choosing a binary operation for conditionals. We currently have three candidates: the Sasaki conditional, the contrapositive Sasaki conditional, and the relevance conditional. A fundamental problem is to show how the form of the conditional follows from an analysis of experimental concepts in quantum theory. Here, we attempt such an analysis through quantum set theory. For each of the above conditionals, we previously introduced an interpretation of quantum set theory, a quantum logical truth value assignment to every set-theoretical statement, that satisfies both the full forms of De Morgan's laws and the transfer principle. In the present study, we explore the structure of the internal reals based on the new interpretations with different conditionals. We show that the externally defined set of the internal reals is identical for each choice among the above three conditionals, and that for the logic represented by a projection lattice on a Hilbert space, the internal reals are in one-to-one correspondence with the self-adjoint operators (or equivalently, quantum observables) affiliated with the von Neumann algebra generated by the logic. Moreover, we show that the truth values for their equality are also irrespective of the choice among the conditionals. Interestingly, however, the truth values for the order relation significantly depend on the underlying conditionals, whereas the order relation holds with the full truth value if and only if their corresponding self-adjoint operators satisfy Olson's spectral order relation irrespective of the choice of the conditional. We describe the difference of the interpretations of the order relation for two internal reals in terms of the order relation, well defined in quantum mechanics, of outcomes from the successive projective measurements of the corresponding two quantum observables., Comment: 46 pages, 1 figure

5. Intrinsic spin Nernst effect in topological Dirac and magnetic Weyl semimetals

Abstract

We investigate the intrinsic spin Nernst effect (SNE), a transverse spin current induced by temperature gradients, in topological Dirac semimetals (TDSMs) and magnetic Weyl semimetals (MWSMs) with Ising spin-orbit coupling. The intrinsic SNE is described by the spin Berry curvature, which reflects the geometric nature of TDSMs and MWSMs. We clarified that the intrinsic SNE becomes significant when the Fermi energy is near, but slightly deviates from, the energy of the point nodes. In this situation, Bloch electrons with strong spin Berry curvature contribute to the SNE while avoiding carrier compensation between electrons and holes. We found that in TDSMs with small Fermi surfaces, the spin Nernst angle, which measures the efficiency of the SNE, is larger than that observed in heavy metals. This suggests that TDSMs with small Fermi surfaces can achieve efficient heat-to-spin current conversion. In MWSMs, variation in the magnitude of the exchange coupling with magnetic moments significantly changes the SNE, affecting both the direction and magnitude of the spin Nernst current. This implies that ferromagnetic transitions can be used to reverse the spin Nernst current. 6. Geometric contribution to adiabatic amplification in non-Hermitian systems

Abstract

Concepts from non-Hermitian quantum mechanics have proven useful in understanding and manipulating a variety of classical systems, such as encountered in optics, classical mechanics, and metamaterial design. Recently, the non-Hermitian analog of the Berry phase for adiabatic processes has been experimentally measured. In non-Hermitian systems, the Berry phase can have an imaginary part, which contributes to the amplification or decay of the total wave intensity. When the imaginary part of the Berry curvature is zero, this geometric amplification factor is determined solely by the initial and final points of the adiabatic path in parameter space, and does not depend on how these points are connected by the path. We list classes of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians where this path independence is guaranteed by suitable symmetries, and find that, for some of these classes, the amplification factor can be written only in terms of the Petermann factors of the initial and final points. Our result can, in turn, be used to experimentally obtain the Petermann factor by observing how the norm of the wavefunction changes under adiabatic processes. Abstract

We report the first measurement of the azimuthal anisotropy of J$/\psi$ at forward rapidity ($1.2<|\eta|<2.2$) in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The data were collected by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 and 2016 with integrated luminosity of 14.5~nb$^{-1}$. The second Fourier coefficient ($v_2$) of the azimuthal distribution of $J/\psi$ is determined as a function of the transverse momentum ($p_T$) using the event-plane method. The measurements were performed for several selections of collision centrality: 0\%--50\%, 10\%--60\%, and 10\%-40\%. We find that in all cases the values of $v_2(p_T)$, which quantify the elliptic flow of J$/\psi$, are consistent with zero. The results are consistent with measurements at midrapidity, indicating no significant elliptic flow of the J$/\psi$ within the quark-gluon-plasma medium at collision energies of $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV., Comment: 369 authors from 72 institutions, 12 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables. v1 is version submitted to Physical Review C. 9. Topological Spin-Orbit Torque in Ferrimagnetic Weyl Semimetal

Abstract

The spin-orbit torque (SOT) in a compensated ferrimagnetic Weyl semimetal, ${\rm Ti}_{2}{\rm MnAl}$, is studied by the linear response theory. We elucidate that the SOT driven by all the occupied electronic states is present in magnetic Weyl semimetal, unlike in conventional metallic magnets. Around the energy of the Weyl points, we find that such an SOT is dominant and almost independent of the disorder. The emergence of the SOT in ${\rm Ti}_{2}{\rm MnAl}$ can be understood from the structure of the mixed Berry curvature around the Weyl points, which is similar to that of the ordinary Berry curvature., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The $J/\psi$ and $\psi(2S)$ charmonium states, composed of $c\bar{c}$ quark pairs and known since the 1970s, are widely believed to serve as ideal probes to test quantum chromodynamics in high-energy hadronic interactions. However, there is not yet a complete understanding of the charmonium-production mechanism. Recent measurements of $J/\psi$ production as a function of event charged-particle multiplicity at the collision energies of both the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) show enhanced $J/\psi$ production yields with increasing multiplicity. One potential explanation for this type of dependence is multiparton interactions (MPI). We carry out the first measurements of self-normalized $J/\psi$ yields and the $\psi(2S)$ to $J/\psi$ ratio at both forward and backward rapidities as a function of self-normalized charged-particle multiplicity in $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV. In addition, detailed {\sc pythia} studies tuned to RHIC energies were performed to investigate the MPI impacts. We find that the PHENIX data at RHIC are consistent with recent LHC measurements and can only be described by {\sc pythia} calculations that include MPI effects. The forward and backward $\psi(2S)$ to $J/\psi$ ratio, which serves as a unique and powerful approach to study final-state effects on charmonium production, is found to be less dependent on the charged-particle multiplicity., Comment: 301 authors from 69 institutions, 8 pages, 3 figures. v1 is version submitted to Physical Review D Letters. 11. Selecting Relevant Structural Features for Glassy Dynamics by Information Imbalance

Abstract

We investigate numerically the identification of relevant structural features that contribute to the dynamical heterogeneity in a model glass-forming liquid. By employing the recently proposed information imbalance technique, we select these features from a range of physically motivated descriptors. This selection process is performed in a supervised manner (using both dynamical and structural data) and an unsupervised manner (using only structural data). We then apply the selected features to predict future dynamics using a machine learning technique. Finally, we discuss the potential applications of this approach in identifying the dominant mechanisms governing the glassy slow dynamics.

Abstract

The PHENIX experiment measured the centrality dependence of two-pion Bose-Einstein correlation functions in $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV Au$+$Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The data are well represented by L\'evy-stable source distributions. The extracted source parameters are the correlation-strength parameter $\lambda$, the L\'evy index of stability $\alpha$, and the L\'evy-scale parameter $R$ as a function of transverse mass $m_T$ and centrality. The $\lambda(m_T)$ parameter is constant at larger values of $m_T$, but decreases as $m_T$ decreases. The L\'evy scale parameter $R(m_T)$ decreases with $m_T$ and exhibits proportionality to the length scale of the nuclear overlap region. The L\'evy exponent $\alpha(m_T)$ is independent of $m_T$ within uncertainties in each investigated centrality bin, but shows a clear centrality dependence. At all centralities, the L\'evy exponent $\alpha$ is significantly different from that of Gaussian ($\alpha=2$) or Cauchy ($\alpha=1$) source distributions. Comparisons to the predictions of Monte-Carlo simulations of resonance-decay chains show that in all but the most peripheral centrality class (50%-60%), the obtained results are inconsistent with the measurements, unless a significant reduction of the in-medium mass of the $\eta'$ meson is included. In each centrality class, the best value of the in-medium $\eta'$ mass is compared to the mass of the $\eta$ meson, as well as to several theoretical predictions that consider restoration of $U_A(1)$ symmetry in hot hadronic matter., Comment: 401 authors from 75 institutions, 20 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables. v1 is version submitted to Physical Review C. Abstract

A dedicated isochronous storage ring, named the Rare-RI Ring, was constructed at the RI Beam Factory of RIKEN, aiming at precision mass measurements of nuclei located in uncharted territories of the nuclear chart. The Rare-RI Ring employs the isochronous mass spectrometry technique with the goal to achieve a relative mass precision of $10^{-6}$ within a measurement time of less than 1 ms. The performance of the facility was demonstrated through mass measurements of neutron-rich nuclei with well-known masses. Velocity or magnetic rigidity is measured for every particle prior to its injection into the ring, wherein its revolution time is accurately determined. The latter quantity is used to determine the mass of the particle, while the former one is needed for non-isochronicity corrections. Mass precisions on the order of $10^{-5}$ were achieved in the first commissioning, which demonstrates that Rare-RI Ring is a powerful tool for mass spectrometry of short-lived nuclei.

Abstract

Kagome superconductors AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) exhibit a characteristic superconducting and charge-density wave (CDW) phase diagram upon carrier doping and chemical substitution. However, the key electronic states responsible for such a phase diagram have yet to be clarified. Here we report a systematic micro-focused angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of Cs(V1-xCrx)3Sb5 as a function of Cr content x, where Cr substitution causes monotonic reduction of superconducting and CDW transition temperatures. We found that the V-derived bands forming saddle points at the M point and Dirac nodes along high-symmetry cuts show an energy shift due to electron doping by Cr substitution, whereas the Sb-derived electron band at the Gamma point remains almost unchanged, signifying an orbital-selective band shift. We also found that band doubling associated with the emergence of three-dimensional CDW identified at x = 0 vanishes at x = 0.25, in line with the disappearance of CDW. A comparison of band diagrams among Ti-, Nb-, and Cr-substituted Cs(V1-xCrx)3Sb5 suggests the importance to simultaneously take into account the two saddle points at the M point and their proximity to the Fermi energy, to understand the complex phase diagram against carrier doping and chemical pressure., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We report an estimation of the injected mass composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) at energies higher than 10 EeV. The composition is inferred from an energy-dependent sky distribution of UHECR events observed by the Telescope Array surface detector by comparing it to the Large Scale Structure of the local Universe. In the case of negligible extra-galactic magnetic fields the results are consistent with a relatively heavy injected composition at E ~ 10 EeV that becomes lighter up to E ~ 100 EeV, while the composition at E > 100 EeV is very heavy. The latter is true even in the presence of highest experimentally allowed extra-galactic magnetic fields, while the composition at lower energies can be light if a strong EGMF is present. Abstract

We use a new method to estimate the injected mass composition of ultrahigh cosmic rays (UHECRs) at energies higher than 10 EeV. The method is based on comparison of the energy-dependent distribution of cosmic ray arrival directions as measured by the Telescope Array experiment (TA) with that calculated in a given putative model of UHECR under the assumption that sources trace the large-scale structure (LSS) of the Universe. As we report in the companion letter, the TA data show large deflections with respect to the LSS which can be explained, assuming small extra-galactic magnetic fields (EGMF), by an intermediate composition changing to a heavy one (iron) in the highest energy bin. Here we show that these results are robust to uncertainties in UHECR injection spectra, the energy scale of the experiment and galactic magnetic fields (GMF). The assumption of weak EGMF, however, strongly affects this interpretation at all but the highest energies E > 100 EeV, where the remarkable isotropy of the data implies a heavy injected composition even in the case of strong EGMF. This result also holds if UHECR sources are as rare as $2 \times 10^{-5}$ Mpc$^{-3}$, that is the conservative lower limit for the source number density., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in PRD

Abstract

Antiferromagnetic topological insulators (AF TIs) are predicted to exhibit exotic physical properties such as gigantic optical and topological magnetoelectric responses. While a key to achieving such phenomena relies on how to break the symmetry protecting the Dirac-cone surface state (SS) and acquire the mass of Dirac fermions, the mechanism has yet to be clarified. To address this issue, we carried out micro-focused angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy for GdBi hosting the type-II AF order, and uncovered the stripe-type 2$\times$1 reconstruction of the Fermi surface associated with the AF band folding. Intriguingly, in contrast to NdBi with the type-I AF order displaying the surface-selective Dirac-fermion mass, GdBi shows massless behavior irrespective of AF domains due to the robust topological protection. These results strongly suggest a crucial role of the ThetaTD (time-reversal and translational) symmetry to create the Dirac-fermion mass in AF TIs., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

While data qubits with a long coherence time are essential for the storage of quantum information, ancilla qubits are pivotal in quantum error correction (QEC) for fault-tolerant quantum computing. The recent development of optical tweezer arrays, such as the preparation of large-scale qubit arrays and high-fidelity gate operations, offers the potential for realizing QEC protocols, and one of the important next challenges is to control and detect ancilla qubits while minimizing atom loss and crosstalk. Here, we present the realization of a hybrid system consisting of a dual-isotope ytterbium (Yb) atom array, in which we can utilize a nuclear spin qubit of fermionic ${}^{171}\mathrm{Yb}$ as a data qubit and an optical clock qubit of bosonic ${}^{174}\mathrm{Yb}$ as an ancilla qubit with a capacity of non-destructive qubit readout. We evaluate the crosstalk between qubits regarding the impact on the coherence of the nuclear spin qubits from the imaging light for ${}^{174}\mathrm{Yb}$. The Hahn-echo sequence with a 399 nm probe and 556 nm cooling beams for ${}^{174}\mathrm{Yb}$, we observe 99.1(1.8) % coherence retained under 20 ms exposure, yielding an imaging fidelity of 0.9992 and a survival probability of 0.988. The Ramsey sequence with a 556 nm probe beam shows negligible influence on the coherence, suggesting the potential future improvement of low cross-talk measurements. This result highlights the potential of the hybrid-Yb atom array for ancilla-qubit-based QEC protocols.

Abstract

We report on an observation of the difference between northern and southern skies of the ultrahigh energy cosmic ray energy spectrum with a significance of ${\sim}8\sigma$. We use measurements from the two largest experiments$\unicode{x2014}$the Telescope Array observing the northern hemisphere and the Pierre Auger Observatory viewing the southern hemisphere. Since the comparison of two measurements from different observatories introduces the issue of possible systematic differences between detectors and analyses, we validate the methodology of the comparison by examining the region of the sky where the apertures of the two observatories overlap. Although the spectra differ in this region, we find that there is only a $1.8\sigma$ difference between the spectrum measurements when anisotropic regions are removed and a fiducial cut in the aperture is applied., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

High-momentum two-particle correlations are a useful tool for studying jet-quenching effects in the quark-gluon plasma. Angular correlations between neutral-pion triggers and charged hadrons with transverse momenta in the range 4--12~GeV/$c$ and 0.5--7~GeV/$c$, respectively, have been measured by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV. Suppression is observed in the yield of high-momentum jet fragments opposite the trigger particle, which indicates jet suppression stemming from in-medium partonic energy loss, while enhancement is observed for low-momentum particles. The ratio and differences between the yield in Au$+$Au collisions and $p$$+$$p$ collisions, $I_{AA}$ and $\Delta_{AA}$, as a function of the trigger-hadron azimuthal separation, $\Delta\phi$, are measured for the first time at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Abstract

Nonlinearities can have a profound influence on the dynamics and equilibrium properties of discrete lattice systems. The simple case of two coupled modes with self-nonlinearities gives rise to the rich bosonic Josephson effects. In many-site arrays, nonlinearities yield a wealth of rich phenomena, including a variety of solitonic excitations, the emergence of vortex lattices in the presence of gauge fields, and the general support of chaotic dynamics. Here, we experimentally explore a three-site mechanical ring with tunable gauge fields and nonlinearities. We observe a macroscopic self-trapping transition that is tunable by the magnetic flux, consistent with the equilibrium response. We further observe novel behavior that appears only out of equilibrium, the emergence of interaction-stabilized chiral solitary waves. These results provide a starting point to explore nonlinear phenomena arising in larger mechanical arrays coupled to static and dynamical gauge fields., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Optical frequency combs operating at low repetition rate exhibit high pulse energy for a given average power. Therefore, low repetition rate frequency combs may efficiently drive nonlinear frequency conversion into the mid-infrared or extreme ultraviolet region to extend frequency metrology to such exotic wavelengths. In this work, we have experimentally demonstrated a low-noise optical frequency comb operating at 40 kHz repetition rate using a Yb:KYW mode-locked laser (center wavelength at 1030 nm, repetition rate 40 MHz) and an acousto-optic modulator-based pulse picker. We have stabilized a single comb mode to an ultra-stable continuous wave laser operating at 1033 nm. The integral rms phase noise (in the range 10 Hz - 20 kHz) was measured to be 167.2 mrad.

Abstract

Central nervous system tumors have resisted effective chemotherapy because most therapeutics do not penetrate the blood-tumor-brain-barrier. Nanomedicines between  ~ 10 and 100 nm accumulate in many solid tumors by the enhanced permeability and retention effect, but it is controversial whether the effect can be exploited for treatment of brain tumors. PLX038A is a long-acting prodrug of the topoisomerase 1 inhibitor SN-38. It is composed of a 15 nm 4-arm 40 kDa PEG tethered to four SN-38 moieties by linkers that slowly cleave to release the SN-38. The prodrug was remarkably effective at suppressing growth of intracranial breast cancer and glioblastoma (GBM), significantly increasing the life span of mice harboring them. We addressed the important issue of whether the prodrug releases SN-38 systemically and then penetrates the brain to exert anti-tumor effects, or whether it directly penetrates the blood-tumor-brain-barrier and releases the SN-38 cargo within the tumor. We argue that the amount of SN-38 formed systemically is insufficient to inhibit the tumors, and show by PET imaging that a close surrogate of the 40 kDa PEG carrier in PLX038A accumulates and is retained in the GBM. We conclude that the prodrug penetrates the blood-tumor-brain-barrier, accumulates in the tumor microenvironment and releases its SN-38 cargo from within. Based on our results, we pose the provocative question as to whether the 40 kDa nanomolecule PEG carrier might serve as a Trojan horse to carry other drugs past the blood-tumor-brain-barrier and release them into brain tumors.

26. Theory of Generalized Landau Levels and Implication for non-Abelian States

Abstract

Quantum geometry is a fundamental concept to characterize the local properties of quantum states. It is recently demonstrated that saturating certain quantum geometric bounds allows a topological Chern band to share many essential features with the lowest Landau level, facilitating fractionalized phases in moir\'e flat bands. In this work, we systematically extend the consequence and universality of saturated geometric bounds to arbitrary Landau levels by introducing a set of single-particle states, which we term as ``generalized Landau levels''. These generalized Landau levels exhibit exactly quantized values of integrated trace of quantum metric determined by their corresponding Landau level indices, regardless of the nonuniformity of their quantum geometric quantities. We derive all geometric quantities for individual and multiple generalized Landau levels, discuss their relations, and understand them in light of the theory of holomorphic curves and moving frames. We further propose a model by superposing few generalized Landau levels which is supposed to capture a large portion of the single-particle Hilbert space of a generic Chern band analogous to the first Landau level. Using this model, we employ exact diagonalization to identify a single-particle geometric criterion for permitting the non-Abelian Moore-Read phase, which is potentially useful for future engineering of moir\'e materials and beyond. We use a double twisted bilayer graphene model with only adjacent layer hopping term to show the existence of first generalized Landau level type narrow band and zero-field Moore-Read state at the second magic angle which serves as a promising starting point for more detailed future studies. We expect that generalized Landau levels will serve as a systematic tool for analyzing topological Chern bands and fractionalized phases therein., Comment: 40 pages, 11 figures

27. Disturbance Evaluation Circuit in Quantum Measurement

Abstract

According to the uncertainty principle, every quantum measurement accompanies disturbance. In particular, accurate sequential measurements need the accurate control of disturbance. However, the correct role of disturbance in the uncertainty principle has been known only recently. Understanding the disturbance is crucial for understanding the fundamentals of physics, and accurately evaluating the disturbance is important for quantum technologies such as quantum information processing and quantum metrology. Therefore, the experimental evaluation of the disturbance is a significant challenge in those fields. In this study, we propose a novel evaluation method for the quantum root-mean-square (QRMS) disturbance and compare its performance with the existing approaches, known as the three-state method (TSM) and the weak measurement method (WMM). Our method establishes a correspondence between the QRMS disturbance of the measurement and the second-order derivative of the decoherence induced in a newly introduced weak probe system with respect to the coupling strength of the weak interaction at its zero-limit. Furthermore, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in comparison with the other two through a simulation and experiment using a quantum computer. The Paszkiewicz conjecture about a product of positive contractions asserts that given a decreasing sequence $T_1\ge T_2\ge \dots$ of positive contractions on a separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space, the product $S_n=T_n\dots T_1$ converges strongly. Recently, the first named author verified the conjecture for certain classes of sequences. In this paper, we prove the Paszkiewicz conjecture in full generality. Abstract

In the recent rapid progress of quantum technology, controlling quantum states has become an important subject of study. Of particular interest is the control of open quantum systems, where the system of interest couples to the environment in an essential way. One formalism to describe open systems is the non-Hermitian quantum mechanics. Photonics systems have been a major platform to study non-Hermitian quantum mechanics due to its flexibility in engineering gain and loss. Ultracold atomic gases have also used to study non-Hermitian quantum mechanics. However, unlike in photonics, gain is not easily controllable in ultracold atomic gases, and exploration of non-Hermitian physics has been limited to control of losses. In this paper, we report engineering of effective gain through evaporative cooling of judiciously chosen initial thermal atoms. We observe resulting formation of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in excited eigenstates of a synthetic lattice. We realize formation of BEC in a topological edge state of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattice in the synthetic hyperfine lattice, which can be regarded as atomic laser oscillations at a topological edge mode, i.e. topological atom laser. We classify all potential configurations of essential annuli in a genus two atoroidal handlebody exterior in the $3$-sphere, building on two recent classifications: the classification of the JSJ-graph of the exterior and the classification of essential annuli in the exterior. In contrast to knots, genus two handlebody exteriors may contain infinitely many non-isotopic essential annuli, due to the JSJ-graph classification. Abstract

Flat bands play a central role in hosting emergent states of matter in many condensed matter systems, from the nascent insulating states of twisted bilayer graphene to the fractionalized excitations found in frustrated magnets and quantum Hall materials. Here, we report on the experimental realization of highly tunable flat-band models populated by strongly interacting Rydberg atoms. Using the approach of synthetic dimensions, we engineer a flat-band rhombic lattice with twisted boundaries, and through nonequilibrium dynamics we explore the control of Aharonov--Bohm (AB) caging via a tunable $U(1)$ gauge field. Through microscopic measurements of Rydberg pairs, we explore the interaction-driven breakdown of AB caging in the limit of strong dipolar interactions that mix the lattice bands. In the limit of weak interactions, where caging remains intact, we observe an effective magnetism that arises due to the interaction-driven mixing of degenerate flat-band states. These observations of strongly correlated flat-band dynamics open the door to explorations of new emergent phenomena in synthetic quantum materials., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

33. Bulk-entanglement spectrum correspondence in $PT$- and $PC$-symmetric topological insulators and superconductors

Abstract

In this study, we discuss a new type of bulk-boundary correspondence which holds for topological insulators and superconductors when the parity-time ($PT$) and/or parity-particle-hole ($PC$) symmetry are present. In these systems, even when the bulk topology is nontrivial, the edge spectrum is generally gapped, and thus the conventional bulk-boundary correspondence does not hold. We find that, instead of the edge spectrum, the single-particle entanglement spectrum becomes gapless when the bulk topology is nontrivial: i.e., the $\textit{bulk-entanglement}$ $\textit{spectrum}$ $\textit{correspondence}$ holds in $PT$- and/or $PC$-symmetric topological insulators and superconductors. After showing the correspondence using $K$-theoretic approach, we provide concrete models for each symmetry class up to three dimensions where nontrivial topology due to $PT$ and/or $PC$ is expected. An implication of our results is that, when the bulk topology under $PT$ and/or $PC$ symmetry is nontrivial, the non-interacting many-body entanglement spectrum is multiply degenerate in one dimension and is gapless in two or higher dimensions., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

A simplicial complex is said to be {\em critical} (or {\em forbidden}) for the 3-sphere $S^3$ if it cannot be embedded in $S^3$ but after removing any one point, it can be embedded. We show that if a multibranched surface cannot be embedded in $S^3$, it contains a critical complex which is a union of a multibranched surface and a (possibly empty) graph. We exhibit all critical complexes for $S^3$ which are contained in $K_5 \times S^1$ and $K_{3,3} \times S^1$ families. We also classify all critical complexes for $S^3$ which can be decomposed into $G\times S^1$ and $H$, where $G$ and $H$ are graphs. In spite of the above property, there exist complexes which cannot be embedded in $S^3$, but they do not contain any critical complexes. From the property of those examples, we define an equivalence relation on all simplicial complexes $\mathcal{C}$ and a partially ordered set of complexes $(\mathcal{C}/\mathord\sim; \subseteqq)$, and refine the definition of critical. According to the refined definition of critical, we show that if a complex $X$ cannot be embedded in $S^3$, then there exists $[X']\subseteqq [X]$ such that $[X']$ is critical for $[S^3]$., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

Modulation of magnetization in magnetic Weyl semimetals leads to the shift of Weyl points in momentum space, which effectively serves as the chirality-dependent gauge field for the Weyl fermions. Here, we theoretically study such a magnetization-induced chiral gauge field, in a fully spin-polarized Weyl ferromagnet $\rm{Co}_3\rm{Sn}_2\rm{S}_2$. From a tight-binding model of $\rm{Co}_3\rm{Sn}_2\rm{S}_2$ on stacked kagome lattice with magnetism, we calculate the magnetization-dependent evolution of the Weyl points in momentum space, resulting in the chiral gauge field. In the presence of the magnetic domain wall structure, we evaluate the chiral magnetic field arising from the spatial profile of the chiral gauge field. We find that a magnetic domain wall in $\rm{Co}_3\rm{Sn}_2\rm{S}_2$ gives rise to a giant chiral magnetic field for the Weyl fermions, which reaches the order of a few hundred tesla to induce the Landau quantization. Such a giant chiral magnetic field may also influence the novel transport phenomena, such as the charge pumping by the domain wall motion, compatible with the spin-motive force., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

This pedagogical piece provides a surprisingly simple demonstration that the quantized Hall conductivity of correlated insulators is given by the many-body Chern number, a topological invariant defined in the space of twisted boundary conditions. In contrast to conventional proofs, generally based on the Kubo formula, our approach entirely relies on combining Kramers-Kronig relations and Fermi's golden rule within a circular-dichroism framework. This pedagogical derivation illustrates how the Hall conductivity of correlated insulators can be determined by monitoring single-particle excitations upon a circular drive, a conceptually simple picture with direct implications for quantum-engineered systems, where excitation rates can be directly monitored., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures + Appendix
