The oxygen isotope (δ 18 O) compositions of final chamber fragments of individual shells of the planktic foraminifer Orbulina universa were measured in situ via secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and by traditional gas-source mass spectrometry (GSMS) entailing acid digestion of sampled calcite. The paired SIMS-GSMS analyses were performed on final chamber fragments of fossil shells taken from the top of a sediment core (Holocene) as well as shells grown in laboratory culture. Multiple iterations of SIMS-GSMS analyses were conducted on final chamber fragments treated with a variety of cleaning protocols. The series of paired analyses yielded an average SIMS-GSMS δ 18 O offset (Δ 18 O SIMS-GSMS ) of −0.9 ± 0.1‰ (±2 SE). The volume of material analyzed in 10-μm SIMS spots is ~10 5 times smaller than that analyzed by GSMS; hence, the extent to which these Δ 18 O SIMS-GSMS values represent real differences in analyte vs. instrumental factors remains unclear. Possible contributing factors to the SIMS-GSMS δ 18 O difference include sample-standard mismatch by SIMS, differences in standardization of SIMS and GSMS, and non-calcite contaminants in samples. Although the two datasets are consistently offset, SIMS values reproduce inter-shell δ 18 O variability delineated by shell fragment GSMS values. This strong positive covariance proved useful for bringing the two datasets into agreement (i.e. Δ 18 O SIMS-GSMS  = 0), and confirms that SIMS-based foraminifer δ 18 O values record changes in calcification temperature and/or δ 18 O of seawater. Whether shells of foraminifer taxa with differing microcrystalline structures, chemical composition, and/or preservation histories register a similar Δ 18 O SIMS-GSMS value is a subject of ongoing testing. Two baddeleyite megacrysts were evaluated as potential reference materials (RMs) for SIMS oxygen isotope analysis, and utilized to understand and calibrate instrumental mass fractionation (IMF). A baddeleyite crystal (S0045) from the Phalaborwa carbonatite, South Africa has a mean δ 18 O VSMOW  = +4.6 ± 0.3‰ (range 0.75‰) measured using laser fluorination gas source mass spectrometry (LF-GMS) and one (S0069) from the Mogok metamorphic belt, Myanmar has δ 18 O VSMOW  = +22.2 ± 0.4‰ (range 0.89‰). SIMS standardization utilizing these inherently heterogeneous RMs is possible by analyzing a number of crystal fragments and utilizing one of them lying at the median of the range. Metamictization, lattice orientation, and chemical composition do not appear to be significant (<0.5‰) variables in matrix matching of RMs and unknowns. Propagation of errors while utilizing the imperfect RMs results in 10 μm diameter spot uncertainties of about ±0.3‰ (2σ). SIMS oxygen isotope analysis of co-crystalline zircon and baddeleyite from the 2.2 Ga Duck Lake sill (DLS) in the Northwest Territories, Canada, yield predominant δ 18 O VSMOW modes of +6.0‰ and +3.2‰, respectively. This difference is consistent with preserving high-temperature isotopic equilibrium between zircon and baddeleyite. DLS baddeleyite δ 18 O data as a whole are negatively skewed (to 0.0‰), and interpreted to reflect low temperature, open-system behaviour. The high resolution infrared spectra of the 32 S 16 O 18 O molecule were recorded with a Bruker IFS 120 HR Fourier transform interferometer for the first time in the region of 1800–2800 cm −1 where the bands 2 ν 1 , ν 1 + ν 3 , and 2 ν 3 are located. About 3970, 2960 and 3450 transitions were assigned in the experimental spectra with the maximum values of quantum numbers J max . / K a max . equal to 59/20, 68/25, and 43/18 to the bands 2 ν 1 , ν 1 + ν 3 , and 2 ν 3 , respectively. The subsequent weighted fit of experimentally assigned transitions was made with the Hamiltonian model which takes into account the resonance interactions between the studied vibrational states. As the result, a set of 39 fitted parameters was obtained which reproduces the initial 3213 ro-vibrational energy values obtained from the assigned transitions with the d rms = 2.4 × 10 − 4 cm − 1 . The 4s–3d and 5s–4d gerade Rydberg states of O2 have been observed for the first time by (2+1) multiphoton ionization (MPI) spectroscopy. At least five vibrational progressions (v=0–3) are seen in the 4s–3d states. Photoelectron spectroscopy has demonstrated that vibrationally state-selected O+2 can be produced in good yields (>80%) via (2+1) MPI of at least one of the newly observed 4s–3d, v’=0–3 progressions. We show that strong non-Franck–Condon effects observed in (2+1) resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization of the C 3Πg state of O2 are due to the kσu shape resonance previously observed in single-photon studies of diatomic molecules. Calculated vibrational branching ratios for the v’=2,3 levels of the C 3Πg state are in reasonable agreement with experiment. Certain discrepancies remain in comparing theoretical results with the measured spectra, and possible electron-correlation effects which underly this are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The central Fennoscandia is characterized by the Archean-Proterozoic (AP) boundary and the Central Finland Granitoid Complex (CFGC), a roundish area of approximately 40,000 km 2 surrounded by supracrustal belts. Deep seismic reflection profile FIRE 3A runs across these units, and we have re-interpreted the profile and crustal evolution along the profile using 1.92–1.85 Ga plutonic rocks as lithospheric probes. The surface part of the profile has been divided into five subareas: Archean continent (AC) in the east, AP, CFGC, boundary zone (BZ) and the Bothnian Belt (BB) in the west. There are 12 key samples from which zircons were studied for inclusions and analyzed (core-rim) by ion probe for U–Pb dating and oxygen isotopes, followed by analyzes for Lu–Hf by LA–MC–ICP–MS. The AC plutonic rocks (1.87–1.85 Ga) form a bimodal suite, where the proposed mantle source for the mafic rocks is 2.1–2.0 Ga metasomatized lower part of the Archean subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) and the source for the felsic melts is related plume-derived underplated mafic material in the lower crust. Variable degrees of contamination of the Archean lower crust have produced “subduction-like” Nb–Ta anomalies in spidergrams and negative ε Nd (T) values in the mafic-intermediate rocks. The felsic AC granitoids originate from a low degree melting of eclogitic or garnet-bearing amphibolites with titanite ± rutile partly prevailing in the residue (Nb–Ta fractionation) followed by variable degree of assimilation/melting of the Archean lower crust. The AP plutonic rocks (ca. 1.88 Ga) can be divided into I-type and A-type granitoids (AP/A), where the latter follow the sediment assimilation trend in ASI diagram, have high δ 18 O values (up to 8‰) in zircons and exhibit negative Ba anomalies (Rb–Ba–Th in spidergram), as found in sedimentary rocks. A mixing/assimilation of enriched mantle-derived melts with melts from already migmatized sedimentary rocks ± amphibolites is proposed. The CFGC is characterized by both I-type and A-type (CFGC/A) intermediate and felsic granitoids. The I-type granitoids are divided into two groups at ≥ 1885 Ma and ≤ 1882 Ma, where the latter overlap in age with the CFGC/A granitoids. Both I-type CFGC and CFGC/A granitoids are interpreted to have formed from mixing of Paleoproterozoic SCLM-derived melts with crustal melts from hydrous and dry intermediate-felsic igneous sources, respectively. The geochemistry, dominantly δ 18 O values below 6.5‰ in zircons and T DM (2.11–2.42 Ga) of the CFGC granitoids favor the occurrence of older crust (ca. 2.1–2.0 Ga) in their genesis. The BZ granitoids are similar in age but more juvenile with T DM ages between 1.94 Ga and 2.16 Ga. The 1.92 Ga granodiorite in the BB is correlated with juvenile gneissic tonalites and granodiorites found from the AP boundary. We suggest that the present high-velocity lower crust under the CFGC is composed of melt-extracted granulites (crustal source age ≥ 2.0 Ga) and mafic cumulates which both formed during 1.90–1.88 Ga arc magmatism. Background: Theoretical calculations have shown that the energy and angular correlations in the three-body decay of the two-neutron unbound 260 can provide information on the ground-state wave function, which has been predicted to have a dineutron configuration and 2n halo structure. Purpose: To use the experimentally measured three-body correlations to gain insight into the properties of 260, including the decay mechanism and ground-state resonance energy. Method: 26O was produced in a one-proton knockout reaction from 27F and the 24O + n + n decay products were measured using the MoNA-Sweeper setup. The three-body correlations from the 26O ground-state resonance decay were extracted. The experimental results were compared to Monte Carlo simulations in which the resonance energy and decay mechanism were varied. Results: The measured three-body correlations were well reproduced by the Monte Carlo simulations but were not sensitive to the decay mechanism due to the experimental resolutions. However, the three-body correlations were found to be sensitive to the resonance energy of 26O. A 1σ upper limit of 53 keV was extracted for the ground-state resonance energy of 26O. Conclusions: Future attempts to measure the three-body correlations from the ground-state decay of 26O will be very challenging due to the need for a precise measurement of the 24O momentum at the reaction point in the target. Oxygen isotopic composition was determined on representative samples of the Cape Ashizuri plutonic rocks, in order to estimate the genetic background of the biotite granite and alkaline granitoids. The biotite granite (70.1-76.1% SiO2) ranged from 8.61 to 9.30‰ δ18O and averaged as 8.9‰ δ18O (n = 3), which is much smaller than the same Miocene granitoids of the Okueyama (avg. 10.1‰) and Takakumayama (11.6‰) granitic bodies, which are associated with tin mineralization. Among the alkaline granitoids, quartz syenites also have values as low as 7.14-8.70‰, with an average of 8.0‰ (n = 3), and monzonite and gabbro vary from 6.14 to 7.86‰, with an average of 7.0‰ (n = 3). These alkaline granitoids may be lower crustal in origin. The gabbroids containing 12.5% MgO at the maximum with low Sr initial ratio, are considered to be derived from the upper mantle through the fore-arc tectonic break-up on the subducting slab. The heavy-ion fusion reactions with 16O bombarding on 62Ni, 65Cu, 74Ge, 148Nd, l80Hf, l86W, 208Pb, 238U are systematically investigated with the improved quantum molecular dynamics model. The fusion cross sections at energies near and above the Coulomb barriers can be reasonably well reproduced by using this semiclassica] microscopic transport model with the parameter sets SkP* and IQ3a. The dynamical nucleus-nucleus potentials and the influence of Fermi constraint on the fusion process are also studied simultaneously. In addition to the mean field, the Fermi constraint also plays a key role for the reliable description of the fusion process and for improving the stability of fragments in heavy-ion collisions. The article discusses a study of the ɑ-cluster structure of 18O with the use of detailed R-matrix analysis of the 14C + ɑ elastic scattering excitation functions. The study examined detailed spectroscopic information of spin parities, partial ɑ- and neutron-decay widths, and involved the use of cluster-nucleon configuration interaction model and shell model. The study found strong fragmentation of large a-cluster strengths in the spectrum of 18O.

The apple snail Pomacea maculata is a recent introduction to Florida from its native range in South America. Little is known about the growth characteristics of apple snails. We measured δ18Oaragonite values along the shell growth axis of the non-native, aquatic pulmonate gastropod, Pomacea maculata, to determine its life span and seasonal growth pattern in Florida. Age, growth rate, and season of growth of P. maculata were determined from seasonal temperature fluctuations, inferred from δ18O values measured on aragonite drilled along the shell whorl. Eight of the 22 P. maculata lived less than one year, ten slightly longer than one year, and one into its third year. Three snails yielded indeterminate results. Snails from lakes Tulane and Verona deposited the majority of carbonate during late fall/early winter, whereas growth in Newnans Lake was divided across the seasons. Among specimens taken alive, and for which time of death was known, there were offsets along the shell margin with respect to δ18O values predicted from δ18Olake-water and temperature. The δ18Oaragonite of snails raised in temperature-controlled settings, however, was in close agreement with calculated empirical values. Zircon is the most useful mineral for studies in U-Pb geochronology and Hf and O isotope geochemistry. Matrix effect is a major problem of the microbeam techniques such as SIMS and LA-(MC)-ICPMS. Therefore, external standardization using well-characterized natural zircon standards is fundamental for accurate microbeam measurements. While the isotopic geochronology and geochemistry laboratories equipped with microbeam analytical facilities have been increasingly established in China during the past decade, applications of the isotopic microanalysis are still limited due to shortage of available standards. We report here the Qinghu zircon as a potential new working reference for microbeam analysis of zircon U-Pb age and O-Hf isotopes. This zircon was separated from the Qinghu quartz monzonite from the western Nanling Range, Southeast China. It is fairly homogeneous in U-Pb age and Hf and O isotopes in terms of large amounts of mircobeam measurements by LA-MC-ICPMS and SIMS at the scales of 20–60 μm. SIMS measurements yield consistent 206Pb/ 238U age within analytical uncertainties with that obtained by ID-TIMS. Precise determinations of O isotopes by IRMS and Hf isotopes by solution MC-ICPMS are in good agreement with the statistical mean of microbeam measurements. We recommend U-Pb age of = 159.5 ± 0.2 Ma (2SE), δ18O = 5.4‰± 0.2‰ (2SD) and 176Hf/ 177Hf = 0.283002 ± 0.000004 (2SD) as the best reference values for the Qinghu zircon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Oxygen isotope exchange with subsequent time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) is a highly valuable tool for determining oxygen diffusion coefficients in oxides. Since ToF-SIMS analysis enables an elemental and chemical mapping, it can also be used to visualize oxygen exchange-active zones by determining the local oxygen isotopic fraction. However, measuring accurate isotopic fractions can be a challenging analytical task owing to secondary ion interaction and signal saturation, particularly when dealing with high secondary ion intensities as commonly found when analyzing oxygen ions from oxides. It is shown that in many cases the calculated 18O− fraction erroneously shifts to higher values and can lead to systematic errors in the determination of diffusion coefficients. A novel ToF-SIMS operation mode, called “Collimated Burst Alignment” (CBA) mode, is therefore introduced to enable a more accurate determination of oxygen isotopic fractions with an optimized lateral resolution of sub-100 nm. Both improvements are rendered possible by a modified beam guidance in the primary ion gun. This modification reduces detector dead time effects and ion interactions to a minimum and secondary ion intensities can be obtained more accurately. An atmospheric pressure needle plasma is generated with a hollowneedle-plate dielectric barrier discharge, and the plasma parameters are measured by optical emission spectroscopy. The length of the needle plasma reaches 3 cm with an argon flow rate in the range from 3.5 to 6.1 ml/min when the applied voltage is 7.2 kV. The spatial distribution of oxygen-atom spectral-line intensity indicates that there is a large concentration of excited oxygen atoms in the middle of the plasma. Gas temperature is estimated by simulating the spectrum of OH radical around 309 nm. The spatial distribution of gas temperature along the plasma is uniform. Gas temperature decreases with the increase in argon flow rate. Electron density determined by the Stark broadening of H\alpha is in the range from 5.8 \times 10^14 to 6.0 \times 10^14\ \cm^-3 when the electron temperature is 1–4 eV. - Oxygen three-isotope ratios of three anhydrous chondritic interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) were analyzed using an ion microprobe with a 2 μm small beam. The three anhydrous IDPs show Δ17O values ranging from −5‰ to +1‰, which overlap with those of ferromagnesian silicate particles from comet Wild 2 and anhydrous porous IDPs. For the first time, internal oxygen isotope heterogeneity was resolved in two IDPs at the level of a few per mil in Δ17O values. Anhydrous IDPs are loose aggregates of fine-grained silicates (≤3 μm in this study), with only a few coarse-grained silicates (2-20 μm in this study). On the other hand, Wild 2 particles analyzed so far show relatively coarse-grained (≥ few μm) igneous textures. If anhydrous IDPs represent fine-grained particles from comets, the similar Δ17O values between anhydrous IDPs and Wild 2 particles may imply that oxygen isotope ratios in cometary crystalline silicates are similar, independent of crystal sizes and their textures. The range of Δ17O values of the three anhydrous IDPs overlaps also with that of chondrules in carbonaceous chondrites, suggesting a genetic link between cometary dust particles (Wild 2 particles and most anhydrous IDPs) and carbonaceous chondrite chondrules. Isotope effects are differences in the properties of the isotopes of an element resulting in different reaction rates of a corresponding compound, in equilibrium constants and in the spectra. Shortly after the discovery of stable isotopes of hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon, Jacob Bigeleisen formulated a theory of isotope effects and calculated possible maximum values. Large isotope effects of 2H (deuterium) against 1H (protium) were seen to possibly influence interpretations of reaction mechanisms if corresponding labelling is used. Much work was invested to ensure the safety of deuterium use in men in spite of the large isotope effect. On the other hand, large deuterium isotope effects gave rise to several practical applications. Examples are the enhancement of the stability of some technical products against oxidative and against hydrolytic degradation (oils, pharmaceuticals) as well as alterations of the detoxification metabolism of pharmaceuticals in vivo. Oxygen isotope ratios of pedogenic carbonates were analyzed along a climatic gradient in the Palouse region of eastern Washington State to evaluate changes in their isotopic composition with changing climate. A modern analog approach was used to assess the relationship between the istotope ratios in the pedogenic carbonates with those in soil water (measured in June when we anticipated carbonate formation might occur because of low soil water content), and meteoric water from two National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP) sites adjacent to our sequence. Mean annual meteoric water δ18O values (wrt VSMOW) from the two NADP sites varied slightly with elevation, -13.9‰ at the Starkey site (elevation 1253 m) and -13.0‰ at the Palouse site, (elevation 766 m) but showed distinct seasonal trends with weighted means ranging from -11.9‰ during autumn to -15.0‰ during the winter. Carbonate δ18O (wrt VPDB) varied significantly with MAP, ranging from -14.1‰ at the most arid site to -11.4‰ at the wettest site but displayed a trend opposite to that of soil water δ18O (-4 to -12‰ VSMOW for the 70 cm depth). Neither measured soil water δ18O values nor mean meteoric water δ18O values generated realistic temperatures of formation for the observed trend in carbonate δ18O values. When mean annual temperatures across the gradient were used for temperature of formation, calculated soil water δ18O in equilibrium with carbonate δ18O was similar to winter precipitation δ18O at the most arid sites but became increasingly similar to mean annual meteoric δ18O as MAP increased. We suggest that the unexpected trend in carbonate δ18O is largely due to the diminishing influence of winter precipitation/snowmelt on soil moisture as MAP increases across the climatic gradient and that seasonal effects of meteoric water may need to be considered in pedogenic mineral isotopic equilibrium in temperate regions. Stopped-flow kinetic investigations of soluble methane monooxygenase (sMMO) from M. capsulatus (Bath) have clarified discrepancies that exist in the literature regarding several aspects of catalysis by this enzyme. The development of thorough kinetic analytical techniques has led to the discovery of two novel oxygenated iron species that accumulate in addition to the well-established intermediates Hperoxo and Q. The first intermediate, P*, is a precursor to Hperoxo and was identified when the reaction of reduced MMOH and MMOB with O2 was carried Out in the presence of ≥540 μM methane to suppress the dominating absorbance signal due to Q. The optical properties of P* are similar to those of Hperoxo, with ϵ420 = 3500 M-1 cm-1and ϵE720 = 1250 M-1 cm-1. These values are suggestive of a peroxo-to-iron(III) charge-transfer transition and resemble those of peroxodiiron(III) intermediates characterized in other carboxylate-bridged diiron proteins and synthetic model complexes. The second identified intermediate, Q*, forms on the pathway of Q decay when reactions are performed in the absence of hydrocarbon substrate. Q* does not react with methane, forms independently of buffer composition, and displays a unique shoulder at 455 nm in its optical spectrum. Studies conducted at different pH values reveal that rate constants corresponding to P* decay/Hperoxo, formation and Hperoxo decay/Q formation are both significantly retarded at high pH and indicate that both events require proton transfer. The processes exhibit normal kinetic solvent isotope effects (KSIEs) of 2.0 and 1.8, respectively, when the reactions are performed in D2O. Abstract: The absorption spectrum of 18O enriched water has been recorded by continuous wave cavity ring down spectroscopy between 5905.7 and 6725.7cm−1 using a series of fibred DFB lasers. The investigated spectral region corresponds to the important 1.55μm transparency window of the atmosphere where water absorption is very weak. The typical CRDS sensitivity (noise equivalent absorption of 5×10−10 cm−1) allowed for the detection of lines with intensity as low as 10−28 cm/molecule while the minimum intensity value provided by HITRAN in the considered spectral region is 1.7×10−24 cm/molecule. The line parameters were retrieved with the help of an interactive least squares multi-lines fitting program assuming a Voigt function as line profile. Overall, 4510 absorption lines belonging to the H2 18O, H2 16O, HD18O, HD16O and H2 17O water isotopologues were measured. Their intensities range between 3×10−29 and 5×10−23 cm/molecule at 296K and the typical accuracy on the line positions is 1×10−3 cm−1. 2074 of the observed lines attributed to H2 18O, HD18O and H2 17O are reported for the first time. The transitions were assigned on the basis of variational calculations resulting in 288, 135 and 38 newly determined rovibrational energy levels for the H2 18O, HD18O and H2 17O isotopologues, respectively. The new data set includes the band origin of the 4ν 2 bending overtone of H2 18O at 6110.4239cm−1 and rovibrational levels corresponding to J and Ka values up to 18 and 12, respectively, for the strongest bands of H2 18O: 4ν 2, ν 1+2ν 2, 2ν 2+ν 3, 2ν 1, ν 1+ν 3, and ν 2+ν 3. The obtained experimental results have been compared to the spectroscopic parameters provided by the HITRAN database and to the recent IUPAC critical review of the rovibrational spectrum of H2 18O and H2 17O as well as to variational calculations. Large discrepancies between the 4ν 2 variationally predicted and experimental intensities have been evidenced for the H2 18O and H2 16O molecules. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The decay energy spectrum for neutron unbound states in 24O (, ) has been observed for the first time. The resonance energy of the lowest lying state, interpreted as the level, has been observed at a decay energy above 600 keV. The resulting excitation energy of the level above 4.7 MeV, supplies strong evidence that 24O is a doubly magic nucleus. The data is also consistent with the presence of a second excited state around 5.33 MeV which can be interpreted as the level. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Some nanocrystalline ternary ferrites (30–40nm) having molecular formula, and face centered cubic structure were investigated by electronic, EPR, magnetization, impedance and Tafel polarization techniques. Results indicate that the combination of antiferromagnetic superexchange interactions of the spinel lattice determines the Curie temperature value. The AB interaction dominates over the sublattice interactions, and occupies A sites, and and ions occupy octahedral sites because of large crystal field stabilization energy. The saturation magnetization coercivity ), remnant field and electrical resistivity are observed to decrease with the progressive replacement of ions (, five unpaired electrons) by ions (, three unpaired electrons). However, the electrocatalytic activity of the oxides towards the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1M KOH at increases with the increase in ; the optimum improvement in the apparent electrocatalytic activity being with 1.0mol Cr. At low overpotentials, the OER on substituted compounds displayed a Tafel slope of and the reaction order with respect to concentration as unity, regardless of the composition of the oxide catalyst. Photoelectron spectra produced by (2+1) MPI via the v=0–3 levels of the (3sσg ) C 3 Πg Rydberg state of O2 show large deviations from the Franck–Condon principle.
