Introduction: Limited data on 24-hour movement behaviors of children aged 5–8 years exist globally. We describe the prevalence and sociodemographic associations of meeting physical activity (PA), sedentary recreational screen time (ST), and sleep guidelines among children from 11 jurisdictions in the US-Affiliated Pacific region. Methods: Cross-sectional representative data from 1192 children aged 5–8 years living in the US-Affiliated Pacific region were drawn from the baseline 2012–2014 Children's Healthy Living Program. Sleep and moderate- to vigorous-intensity PA were calculated from accelerometry. ST and sociodemographic data were collected from caregiver surveys. The percentage of children meeting the Asia-Pacific 24-hour movement guidelines for PA (≥60 min/d of moderate- to vigorous-intensity PA), sleep (≥9 and ≤ 11 h/d) and ST (≤2 h/d) were calculated. Generalized linear mixed models were used to examine associations with adiposity and sociodemographic variables. Results: Twenty-seven percent (95% confidence interval, 24.6–30.0) of children met integrated guidelines; 98% (96.2–98.0) met PA, 78% (75.4–80.0) met sleep, and 35% (32.6–38.0) met ST guidelines. Females (adjusted odds ratio = 1.40 [95% confidence interval, 1.03–1.91]) and those living in lower-middle-income jurisdictions (2.29 [1.49–3.54]) were more likely to meet ST guidelines. Overweight children (0.62 [0.40–0.96]), those aged 8 years (0.39 [0.22–0.69]), and children with caregivers of an education level of high school or beyond (0.44 [0.29–0.68]) were less likely to achieve ST guidelines. Children from midrange annual household incomes were less likely to meet combined guidelines (0.60 [0.39–0.92]). Conclusions: Three-quarters of children are not meeting integrated Asia-Pacific 24-hour movement guidelines. Summary The study aims to test the efficacy of a family‐centred healthy lifestyle program in primary care health centres among children with overweight or obesity, evaluating the results at 3, 6, and 9 months post‐intervention. A single‐blind, randomised controlled cluster study where participants will be blinded to group assignment to reduce bias will be followed. The intervention comprises a 6‐month program with intensive and maintenance behavioural therapies, including dietary modifications and guidelines for physical activity, administered by a multidisciplinary team. Participants will be assigned to an intervention group or a treatment‐as‐usual control group. Primary health centres in Seeb Wilayat, serving densely populated areas and willing to participate, will be included. Randomisation will be conducted at the cluster level to improve recruitment efficiency. A sample size calculation will ensure adequate power to detect significant differences. Ethical approval is granted and informed consent/assent will be obtained from all participants. The proposed study focusses on testing the efficacy of a family‐centred healthy lifestyle program in primary care centres through a controlled, randomised study. Successful outcomes could lead to informed interventions, improvements in the health system, policy recommendations, positive community impacts, information on behavioural therapies, and improved long‐term health outcomes for affected children and their families. This study will contribute to the literature by providing a culturally sensitive and evidence‐based solution to a pressing public health issue, which can be adapted to similar contexts in Oman and beyond. Objective: Overweight and obesity are serious public health issues worldwide and significantly impair children's executive function (EF). However, there is no consensus regarding the benefits of aerobic exercise, on the EF of overweight and obese children. This study systematically evaluated the intervention effects of aerobic exercise on EF and its subcomponents (inhibitory control, working memory, and cognitive flexibility) in overweight and obese children. Methods: We searched six databases—PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Embase, EBSCOhost, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure—until March 17, 2024 for randomized controlled trials examining the effects of aerobic exercise on the EF of overweight and obese children the Cochrane Risk of Bias Assessment Tool. Following heterogeneity testing, RevMan 5.4 and Stata 17.0 were used for meta-analysis and subgroup analysis of the three indicators. The standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were used as statistical measures for effect analysis with the SMD value as the effect size and a p -value of ≤0.05 indicating statistical significance. Results: Eighteen studies involving 1,260 participants were included. Aerobic exercise significantly improved overall EF (SMD = −0.50, 95% CI [−0.68, −0.32], p < 0.01) with a moderate to high positive effect on inhibitory control (SMD = −0.52, 95% CI [−0.72, −0.31], p < 0.01) and working memory (SMD = −0.63, 95% CI [−1.06, −0.20], p < 0.01) but not on cognitive flexibility (SMD = −0.32, 95% CI [−0.71, 0.07], p = 0.11). These results suggest that EF in overweight and obese children is influenced by factors such as exercise characteristics and body mass index (BMI). Subgroup analysis revealed a significant moderating effect of exercise type, exercise intensity, session time, and individual BMI on EF. Conclusion: Aerobic exercise selectively improved EF in overweight and obese children. Subgroup analysis indicated that cognitive engagement in ball game interventions of at least moderate intensity and a single session of 25–40 min are more beneficial for improving EF in overweight and obese children. Objectives: Refugees may have an increased risk of developing overweight/obesity as they often experience a nutritional transition. Because maintaining good cardiorespiratory fitness can help reduce the negative impact of excess weight on overall health, the objective of this study was to examine whether fitness moderates the relationship between weight status and cardiovascular and mental health outcomes in forcibly displaced individuals living in a Greek refugee camp. Methods: A sample of 142 forcibly displaced individuals were recruited. Cardiorespiratory fitness was assessed with the submaximal Åstrand-Rhyming bicycle ergometer test. Blood pressure, blood lipids, blood glucose, and hs-CRP were assessed as physical health outcomes, whereas post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety symptoms, pain, and quality of life were assessed as mental health outcomes. Main and interaction effects were tested via analyses of covariance (ANCOVAs). Results: Almost 50% of the participants were overweight/obese, more than 60% presented with very poor fitness levels, and the percentage of participants with very poor fitness levels was particularly high among overweight/obese participants. Whereas overweight/obesity was associated with a less favorable body composition and cardiovascular risk profile, poor fitness was associated with a higher percentage of body fat and a lower percentage of muscle mass. Cardiorespiratory fitness did not moderate the relationship between overweight/obesity and most of the assessed health outcomes. Conclusions: Only limited support was found for the applicability of the fit-but-fat concept to our population of forcibly displaced individuals. Public health services should prioritize measures to prevent overweight/obesity and associated diseases in refugee camps. Objective: To analyze the changes in children's height, weight, BMI and rates of stunting and overweight and obesity over three periods: 1986–1987, 1996–1998, and 2023 for the community of Yalcoba in the Yucatan Peninsula. Material and Methods: Four hundred forty (6‐to‐15 years) children measured in 2023 were compared with data obtained in 1986–1987 (n = 675) and 1996–1998 (n = 628). Z‐scores of height and BMI were calculated to estimate percentages of stunting and high BMI‐for‐age (overweight and obesity). Comparisons of anthropometric parameters by sex and age groups between years of measurement were performed through one way ANOVAs. Results: Differences in anthropometric parameters were significant in all age groups of both sexes. Boys measured in 2023 were, on average, 6.4 and 3.3 cm taller than boys measured in the 1980s and 1990s, respectively. Increases in girls were 12 and 7.3 cm, respectively. Average increases in weight of boys measured in 2023 were 7.9 kg compared to the 1980s and 5.8 kg compared to 1990s. Average increases in girls measured in 2023 were 11.3 kg compared to the 1980s, and 7.6 kg compared to the 1990s. Stunting between the 1980s and 1990s decreased by 15 percentage points and between the 1990s and 2023 decreased by 47 percentage points. The percent of children deemed overweight/obese during these periods increased from 8 to 12–50 by 2023. Conclusion: Results reflect the overall trends seen in the Yucatan where stunting has decreased substantially but the numbers of overweight/obese youths have increased dramatically in the past 30 years. Objectives: Normal weight obesity can be associated with an increased risk of metabolic abnormalities, systemic inflammation and mortality. The main aim of the study was to analyze the changes in the prevalence of normal weight obesity in 8–18‐year‐olds from Kraków (Poland) between 2010 and 2020. Methods: The study was based on two sets of cross‐sectional, school‐based data obtained in 2010 and 2020. Body height, weight, and fat percentage were obtained. Body mass index was calculated, and only normal‐weight individuals were included. Normal weight obesity was defined as normal BMI with adiposity >85 percentile for age and sex. Results: The prevalence of normal weight obesity among Polish children and adolescents has been alarming for at least the last 10 years. Depending on the sex and age, normal weight obesity was present in more than 10% up to even more than 20% of the examined population. Conclusions: Alarming numbers of Polish children and adolescents suffer from NWO and this problem seems to be present for at least the last decade. A need for a maximally universal definition and cut‐offs to diagnose normal weight obesity should also be stressed, as it will be helpful in providing the best prophylaxis and help to persons already suffering from normal weight obesity. Introduction: Childhood obesity is associated with maternal obesity, but the link to gestational weight gain (GWG) is not fully elucidated. We examined the relationship between early pregnancy maternal body mass index (BMI) and GWG on early childhood growth. Material and Methods: Data from 30 197 mother–child pairs from Uppsala County Mother and Child Cohort were divided into 15 groups according to maternal BMI and GWG, based on World Health Organization classification and Institute of Medicine guidelines, respectively. Postnatal growth patterns were analyzed with linear mixed regression models within maternal BMI groups. Odds ratios of overweight and obesity at 4 years of age were assessed with logistic regression analyses. We treated children of mothers with normal weight and adequate GWG as the reference group, and all analyses were adjusted for potential confounders. Results: GWG was associated with infant BMI z‐score at birth, independent of potential confounding factors. Independent of GWG, we observed an overall decrease in BMI z‐score from 18 months to 5 years in children of mothers who were underweight, while an increase in BMI z‐score was seen in children of mothers who were overweight or obese. In children of normal‐ and overweight mothers, the risk of childhood overweight and obesity was associated with excessive compared to adequate GWG (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.17, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.01–1.36 for normal‐weight mothers, and aOR 1.25, 95% CI 1.04–1.51 for overweight mothers, respectively). Children of mothers with obesity and excessive GWG had the highest risk of being overweight or obese at 4 years (aOR 2.88, 95% CI 2.40–3.44, and 4.38, 95% CI 3.37–5.67, respectively). Associations did not differ between children of mothers with obesity class 1 and 2–3 when comparing excessive and adequate GWG (aOR 1.33, 95% CI 0.96–1.85, and 1.12, 95% CI 0.74–1.70, respectively). Conclusions: Maternal GWG affects infant birth size and growth until 18 months, although maternal BMI is more crucial for childhood growth beyond 18 months. The study aimed to investigate the correlation between insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and ocular surface parameters in obese prepubertal boys. Thirty obese prepubertal boys and 30 age- and gender-matched healthy controls underwent physical measurements, laboratory tests, and ocular surface assessments. The obese group showed lower IGF-1 levels (P = 0.001), reduced Schirmer I tear test (SIT) (P <0.001), and higher meibomian gland scores (meiboscore) compared to controls (P = 0.015). Bivariate analysis revealed a positive association between IGF-1 and SIT (r = 0.677, P < 0.001), and a negative association with between IGF-1 and meiboscore (r = − 0.487, P < 0.001). Multiple regression analysis indicated that IGF-1 (P < 0.001) and triglycerides (P = 0.028) independently influenced SIT. Logistic analysis showed a significant association between decreased IGF-1 and higher meiboscore values (OR 0.994, 95% confidence interval 0.988–1.000; P = 0.033). Conclusion: The findings suggest that reduced IGF-1 in obese prepubertal boys is independently linked to decreased SIT and increased meiboscore, irrespective of obesity and traditional cardiovascular risk factors. This implies that monitoring ocular surface parameters in obese children might provide a new perspective for clinical practice to focus on. Summary: The aim of this study was to provide a quantitative synthesis of the effects of randomized controlled pediatric lifestyle interventions in treating obesity among 11–17‐year‐old children. We conducted a systematic review and meta‐analysis on the randomized controlled trials, consisting of actual exercise training and nutrition education, published between January 2000 and August 2022. The initial search yielded 2598 articles, with eight articles meeting the inclusion criteria. The articles were analyzed using a multivariate random effects model. The primary outcome variables were body mass index (BMI), standardized BMI (BMIz), and waist circumference (WC). Our analyses showed that lifestyle interventions were efficacious in improving BMI (−1.77 kg/m2, 95% CI [−2.70, −0.83], p < 0.001), BMIz (−0.30, 95% CI [−0.45, −0.16], p < 0.001), and WC (−3.32 cm, 95% CI [−5.35, −1.29], p < 0.001) in children with overweight and obesity. In addition, moderation analyses suggested that the efficacy of the lifestyle interventions correlated positively with participants' weight status and was enhanced when an intervention was boosted with a longer intervention duration and higher frequency. In conclusion, the current evidence suggests that lifestyle interventions are efficacious in treating children with obesity. Aim: Diminished hepatic insulin clearance (HIC) is observed in obese adults and is presumed to be mediated by fatty liver. However, few reports have examined HIC in Chinese children with metabolic (dysfunction)‐associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). This study aimed to investigate the correlation between HIC, insulin sensitivity and β‐cell function in obese Chinese children with MAFLD. Methods: In total, 204 obese children (74 MAFLD) aged 4–17 years were enrolled into this study. HIC, insulin sensitivity and β‐cell function were calculated using the oral glucose tolerance test (1.75 g/kg body weight). Correlation analyses between the HIC and clinical variables were performed using Pearson's product–moment correlation coefficients. HIC and glucose homeostasis were assessed in a high‐fat diet mouse model, and liver samples were collected for molecular analysis. Results: Obese children with MAFLD exhibited significantly lower HIC (AUCC‐peptide/insulin ratio, p = 0.0019), higher insulin resistance (homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance, p = 0.002), and increased compensatory β‐cell function (homeostatic model assessment‐β, p = 0.046) than obese children without liver involvement. Notably, HIC was negatively correlated with insulin sensitivity (r = −0.5035, p < 0.0001) and β‐cell function (r = −0.4576, p < 0.0001). However, pancreatic β‐cell dysfunction (p = 0.046) was accompanied by future reduced HIC (p = 0.034) in children with MAFLD in prediabetes. In a high‐fat diet mouse model, MAFLD mice showed a 50% reduction in insulin‐degrading enzyme expression, consistent with the observed decrease in HIC. Conclusions: A lower HIC may offload pancreatic β‐cells at an early stage. However, obese children with MAFLD are at risk of developing diabetes, and preventive efforts should be prioritized. This article discusses a study on the real-life use of the weight loss medication liraglutide (Saxenda) in patients with obesity in France. The study found that patients who started treatment were generally less socially disadvantaged than those who did not start treatment, possibly due to the higher cost of the medication. The primary reasons for not initiating Saxenda were cost and concerns about side effects. Patients who continued treatment for more than 6 months achieved greater weight loss, and the cost of the medication varied widely. Background: In recent years, the prevalence of childhood obesity has escalated alarmingly, posing significant threats to the physical and mental well-being of children, with an elevated likelihood of persisting into adulthood. Notably, recent investigations have uncovered a profound association between intestinal microbiota, a crucial component of the internal milieu, and childhood obesity. Disturbances in intestinal microbiota and their by-products are now understood to be profoundly intertwined with the evolutionary pathway of childhood obesity. Bibliometric analysis offers a deep understanding of the current research landscape, so we apply it to a review of the emerging trends and patterns between childhood obesity and gut microbiota. Materials and methods: We conducted a rigorous and extensive search of the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection database, spanning the years from 1900 to 2023, to analyze scholarly articles pertaining to childhood obesity and gut microbiota. Utilizing VOSviewer, CiteSpace, the R package "bibliometrix," and the online bibliometric analysis platform (https://bibliometric.com/), we delved into the intricate details of research hotspots, academic collaborations, and emerging trends within this domain. Results: The exhaustive search encompassed the globe, uncovering a cumulative total of 1,384 pertinent studies originating from 429 nations. The results were compelling, revealing a profound influence exerted by the United States and China in this specific field of research. Furthermore, it was observed that the volume of scholarly works pertaining to childhood obesity and gut microbiota is steadily growing year on year. The current hot topics in this field include "abuse," "maltreatment," "adverse childhood experiences," "students," and "food addiction". Conclusion: This comprehensive review offers a meticulous exploration of the evolving trends and emerging research agendas pertaining to childhood obesity and gut microbiota over the past two decades. It strives to equip researchers with a thorough understanding of the key nations, institutions, journals, and potential collaborators in these specialized fields. Introduction and objective: Obesity has become an important public health issue in Poland. Furthermore, it is one of the most common preventable causes of diseases and mortality. Pharmacological methods of treating obesity have been developing significantly in recent years. Tirzepatide is a new dual incretin receptor agonist that activates both GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) and GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptors. The aim of this review is to assess the effectiveness of this medication in reducing body weight. Current state of knowledge: According to data from the Central Statistical Office (GUS) in Poland, 65% of men and 49% of women are struggling with the issue of excessive body weight [1]. Obesity in Polish society is steadily increasing in every age group. However, it affects most significantly children aged 7-13 years and adolescents. In 2022, the novel dual GLP and GIP-1 agonist has been registered for the treatment of type 2 diabetes which is not satisfactorily controlled. It can be also used together with diet and physical activity in patients diagnosed with obesity (BMI of 30 kg/m2 or more) or who are overweight (BMI 27-30 kg/m2) and have weight-related health problems such as hypertension, metabolic syndrome, dislipidaemia and diabetes mellitus [2]. Summary: The increasing prevalence of obesity leads to a dynamic search for the most effective pharmacological methods of treating obesity. The combined activation of GLP-1 and GIP receptors by Tirzepatide has been shown to have additional benefits beyond satisfying glucose control. The biological mechanism of action of this medication additionally causes decreased food intake, slowed gastric emptying and enhanced insulin secretion, all of which can contribute to weight reduction. Overall, Tirzepatide represents a promising option for individuals struggling with obesity, offering the potential for significant weight loss in conjunction with lifestyle modifications such as diet and physical activity. Background: Over the past three decades, there has been a significant increase in the prevalence and incidence of overweight and obesity worldwide. The obesogen hypothesis suggests that certain external agents may affect pathways related to fat accumulation and energy balance by stimulating fat cell differentiation and proliferation. Previous research has indicated that exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) and some of its analogues may influence fat accumulation by promoting the transformation of preadipocytes into adipocytes. This study aimed to assess the possible contribution of dietary bisphenol exposure to the odds of developing overweight and obesity in a sample of Spanish children according to sex. Methods: Dietary and anthropometric data were collected from 179 controls and 124 cases schoolchildren aged 3–12 years. Dietary exposure to BPA and bisphenol S (BPS) was assessed using a food consumption frequency questionnaire. Logistic regression models were used to assess the influence of dietary exposure to bisphenols on overweight and obesity stratified by sex. Results: For females, cases had significantly higher exposure to BPA from meat and eggs compared to controls (median = 319.55, interquartile range (IQR) = 176.39–381.01 vs 231.79 (IQR) = 162.11–350.19, p-value = 0.046). Diet quality was higher for controls (6.21 (2.14) vs 4.80 (2.24) p < 0.001) among males independently of a high or low exposure to bisphenols. However, higher diet quality was observed for female controls with an high exposure of total bisphenols (6.79 (2.04) vs 5.33 (2.02) p = 0.031). Females exposed to high levels of BPA from meat and eggs had higher likelihood of being overweight and obese (adjusted Odds Ratio = 2.70, 95% confidence interval = 1.00 – 7.32). However, no consistent associations were found in males. Conclusions: High BPA levels from meat and eggs were positively associated with overweight and obesity in females. The dietary intake of BPA in the schoolchildren in the present study was much higher than the acceptable daily intake established by EFSA for the last year. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic led to dramatic changes in the lives of children that impact cardiometabolic health. Cities and counties had varying policies with respect to school closure, recreational programs, and efforts to mitigate food insecurity and economic distress. Our objective was to evaluate changes in BMI-z score and prevalence of overweight/obesity prior to and during the pandemic among children in San Francisco, CA, where public schools were closed for 18-months. Methods: This was an electronic medical record-based retrospective cohort study. We included 15,401 children, 4–17 years of age at study onset. Our exposure was time into each of three time periods: (1) March 2018-February 2019; (2) March 2019-February 2020; (3) March 2020-August 2021 (the pandemic period of school closure). Generalized estimating equations (GEE) were used to assess changes in BMI-z score and overweight/obesity across the three time periods. We assessed for effect modification by age-category, insurance status, and race/ethnicity. Results: Mean BMI-z score increased by 0.06 per year in time period 2, the year prior to the pandemic (p < 0.001, 95% CI: 0.04, 0.09), and by 0.12 per year during time period 3, the first 18 months of the pandemic (p < 0.001, 95% CI 0.10, 0.13). The proportion of children with overweight/obesity increased by 1.4% points per year during time period 2 (p = 0.012, 95% CI: 0.03, 2.46) and by 4.9% points per year during the first 18 months of the pandemic (p < 0.001, 95% CI: 4.11, 5.67). The effect modification analysis demonstrated that the youngest age group, publicly insured children (versus privately insured), and Black, Latino, and Asian children (versus White children) experienced greater increases in BMI-z score during the pandemic (p < 0.01 for all comparisons). The youngest age group (p = 0.022) and publicly insured children (versus privately insured children) (p < 0.001) also experienced greater increases in the proportion of children with overweight/obesity during the pandemic. Conclusions: Among children in San Francisco, increases in BMI-z score and overweight/obesity were greater during the pandemic compared to prior changes, with the most pronounced increases among younger and publicly insured children. Purpose: The correlation between body weight and health is a significant public health concern. While the adverse effects of obesity on pulmonary function are well-known, the impact of being underweight remains debated due to limited research. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between Body Mass Index (BMI) categories and lung function parameters. Results: A study of 3077 participants found significant differences in gender, age, height, and weight across various Body Mass Index (BMI) categories. The study found non-significant variations in forced expiratory flow (FVC) across BMI categories, with underweight individuals showing lower FVC compared to normal and overweight individuals. BMI significantly impacted mean forced expiratory flow during the middle half of FVC. A significant negative correlation was observed between age and FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC ratio, and FEF25-75. A significant positive correlation was observed between weight, height, and lung function parameters. Multiple regression analysis revealed a decrease in lung function with advancing age, while height showed significant positive associations. Aim Methods Results Conclusion The purpose of this study was to evaluate irisin, myonectin and high‐sensitivity interleukin‐6 (hs IL‐6) levels in obese children and adolescents and to determine the association of these parameters with metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) in children.Sixty‐one overweight/obese children with suspected liver disease and seventeen healthy controls were included in the study. MASLD was diagnosed according to the latest consensus. Circulating irisin, myonectin and hs IL‐6 were measured by enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).The study group included 38 children meeting MASLD criteria and 23 children without diagnosed hepatic steatosis. The concentrations of the analysed myokines were comparable in the MASLD and non‐MASLD groups. Patients with MASLD were further divided according to the severity of hepatic steatosis. Significantly higher levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), gamma glutamyltransferase, uric acid and irisin were observed in patients with severe hepatic steatosis compared to mild hepatic steatosis. There were borderline statistically significant positive correlations of irisin with ALT and AST.We revealed that elevated irisin levels were associated with the degree of hepatic steatosis in MASLD. Objective: Exploring changing trends in the burden caused by overweight and obesity among children and adolescents from 1990 to 2019 at the global, regional, and national levels, based on data from the Global Burden of Disease study (GBD) 2019. Methods: The annual number and rate of deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) associated with a high BMI among children and adolescents at global, regional, and national levels by age groups, sexes, and the sociodemographic index from 1990 to 2019 were collected from the GBD study 2019. Change percentage for number, and the estimated annual percentage changes (EAPCs) for rate were calculated to determine the temporal trends. Results: From 1990 to 2019, global high BMI-related deaths decreased by 34% but DALYs increased by 48%. Death rates in females were higher than in males, although both showed decreasing trends. For the rate of DALYs, both sexes showed increasing trends, but since 1999, the rate in males has surpassed that in females. A high BMI had the greatest impact on children under 5 years of age, and the burden in other age groups continued to increase. Regionally, High-income Asia Pacific experienced the fastest decrease in death rate (EAPC=-9.57), and East Asia saw the fastest increase in the DALYs rate (EAPC= 3.47). Globally, as age increases, the proportion of disease burden attributed to a high BMI in females generally increases. Objectives: to estimate insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) levels in apparently healthy infants and prepubertal children and compare results among different nutritional statuses. Methods: Our cross-sectional work is a sub-study of a screening project for anemia and nutritional status. We included 252 apparently healthy infants and children with a mean age of 3.7 ± 1.3 years (1.1–6.6), with equal gender distribution. Data retrieved included breastfeeding and anthropometric measures. We tested the stored blood samples for IGF-1 levels. The sample size was reached when all kits were consumed. Results: abnormal anthropometric measures were detected in 32.9%, either a single or multiple, and 86.5% were breastfed. Girls had significantly higher serum IGF-1 levels than boys (P: <0.001), which was noticeable in girls with abnormal nutritional status detected with anthropometry. Breastfeeding showed no significant association with IGF-1 levels. No significant difference was observed between IGF-1 levels between children with normal versus those with abnormal growth measures. Children with overweight or obesity had significantly lower IGF-1 than children with other body mass index (BMI) categories. Serum IGF-1 levels correlated positively with arm muscle area Z scores in infants and toddlers and weight and BMI Z scores in children between three and four. Also, IGF-1 correlated positively with the triceps skinfold Z score and arm muscle area Z score between four and five. Conclusions: Among studied infants and prepubertal children, serum IGF-1 was significantly higher in girls than boys and was considerably lower in children with overweight or obesity. Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is emerging as the most prevalent liver disease in overweight and obese children. While no cure exists, dietary and lifestyle modifications have been shown to improve the condition. This study investigates the relationship between fructose and fiber consumption, physical activity, and NAFLD in children. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 378 overweight and obese children aged 6–13 years. NAFLD diagnosis was confirmed via ultrasound, and dietary intake was assessed using a 147-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Physical activity was evaluated using the Modifiable Activity Questionnaire (MAQ). Multivariable logistic regression models were applied to determine the associations. Results: After excluding 53 participants due to incomplete data, 325 were included in the final analysis. The mean age was 9.2 ± 1.7 years, and 35% had NAFLD. No significant association was found between fructose intake and NAFLD (OR: 0.67, 95% CI: 0.35–1.29, P = 0.221). However, higher intake of legume fiber (OR: 0.48, 95% CI: 0.26–0.90, P = 0.03) and nut fiber (OR: 0.52, 95% CI: 0.28–0.95, P = 0.04) was significantly associated with a reduced risk of NAFLD. Physical activity showed a trend towards reduced NAFLD risk but was not statistically significant after adjustments (OR: 0.53, 95% CI: 0.22–1.04, P = 0.07). Conclusions: While fructose intake was not significantly linked to NAFLD in this population, fiber from legumes and nuts appeared protective. Objective To assess the body mass index (BMI), percentage of body fat (PBF), and bone age of school-age children in Xuzhou city, and to explore the relationship between BMI, PBF, and bone age, so as to provide reference for promoting the health of children. Methods A cluster sampling method was used to select 601 students of grade three from three schools in Xuzhou from July to August 2023, questionnaire surveys and physical examinations were used to collect children's data, and disordered multi-classification logistic regression analysis was used to explore the association between different types of BMI or PBF and bone age development. Results The rates for thinness, overweight, and obesity in boys were 14.2%, 11.1%, and 19.2% respectively, in girls were 17.6%, 9.3%, and 14.0%, respectively; Multivariate logistic regression showed that after adjusting for covariates such as gender, development of secondary sexual characteristics, average monthly household income, birth weight, father's height, and mother's height, the risk of early bone age development was significantly increased in both the BMI obese and overweight groups compared to the BMI normal group (OR=10.10, 95%CI:4.83-21.12; OR=3.78, 95%CI:1.53-9.33); The PBF high body fat group had a significantly increased risk of early bone age development compared to the PBF normal group (OR=3.79, 95%CI:2.01-7.13); BMI obese and PBF high body fat groups are protective factors for delayed bone age development (OR=0.40, 95%CI: 0.20-0.78; OR=0.52, 95%CI:0.31-0.87). Summary Objective Methods Results Conclusions This study examined cross‐level interaction between parental education and neighbourhood SES in predicting overweight including obesity among school‐aged children.This analysis used data from 19 984 children aged 5–6 years participating in the school‐entry examination of the years 2015 to 2019 in the Aachen city region in Germany. We employed multilevel logistic regression models to predict overweight based on parental education and neighbourhood SES, along with their cross‐level interaction, while controlling for several characteristics of the child.Children from families with intermediate (OR: 1.99; 95% CI, 1.65–2.40) and low parental education (OR: 2.55; 95% CI, 1.92–3.39) and from neighbourhoods with intermediate (OR: 1.25; 95% CI, 1.02–1.53) and low SES (OR: 1.61; 95% CI, 1.29–2.02) were at significantly higher odds for overweight. There was an indication of a cross‐level interaction effect (p‐value <0.10) to the disadvantage of children with higher parental education, suggesting that inequalities in overweight decrease in more deprived neighbourhoods. The predicted probability of overweight for children with high parental education increased from 6.4% in high SES neighbourhoods to 7.8% in intermediate and 9.9% in low SES neighbourhoods. Sensitivity analyses for obesity and a higher context level of spatial SES confirmed the results.The results highlight the crucial role of both individual and contextual socioeconomic conditions in predicting childhood overweight. Objectives: Childhood overweight/obesity is a serious public health problem in the world today specially low-and-middle income countries like Ethiopia. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of overweight/obesity and associated factors among preschool children. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among preschool children aged 3-5 years in Arba Minch city from April to June 2022. A multistage sampling method was used to select 577 study participants. Data were collected using a structured and pretested questionnaire. A binary logistic regression model was used for analysis. An adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) was used to assess the strength of the association. Results: The combined prevalence of overweight/obesity was 23.9% (95% CI: 20.5, 27.6). Age of 36-47 months, family size < five, watching TV/video for ≥2 h, and consuming sweet foods, were factors associated with being overweight/obese among preschool children. Conclusion: Overweight/obesity was predicted by consuming sweet foods, long time TV/ video watching, and large family size in the study area. Background: The physical changes that accompany the onset of puberty demand a constant restructuring of the adolescent's perception of their body and may influence adolescents' mental health. Aim: To describe weight status perception and its association with socio-demographic characteristics (SDC) and mental health disorders among adolescents in a low and middle-income country (LMIC). Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study in high schools in the urban area of the governorate of Sousse, Tunisia in 2018. We included in our study all students studying in selected classes in selected public high schools and who are consented to participate. Multinomial logistic regression was used to assess the associated factors to weight perception categories. Results: The total number of students participating was 1399 with a response rate of 86.68%. The female sex was predominant (60.5% versus 39.5%). The mean age was of 17.03 ± 1.51 years. According to multivariate analysis, perceived weight categories were associated with sociodemographic factors such as gender and maternal educational level. Adolescents perceiving themselves as obese were at risk for severe depression (aOR = 0.40; p = 0.033). The BMI was associated with weight misperception: adolescents with normal weight tend to overestimate their weight (obesity aOR = 0.13, p = 0.017; overweight aOR = 0.1, p = 0.001). Conclusion: There was a clear discrepancy between the actual weight status of the teens and their self-perceived weight. Adolescents are still growing both physically and mentally, and forming their self-image. The impact of obesity on kidney injury and the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is well documented. Unfortunately, the early stages of CKD are asymptomatic, leading to a delayed diagnosis and a worse prognosis. There is a need for more sensitive indicators of kidney damage than those currently used. We aimed to assess the usefulness of serum t-CAF, urinary netrin-1, α-GST, π-GST, calbindin, and calprotectin as biomarkers of early kidney damage in obese children and to investigate the relationship between these indicators and the degree of obesity. A total of 125 simple obese, normoalbuminuric children and 33 non-obese children as controls were selected. Patients were divided into 2 subgroups according to SDS BMI (I: 2 ≤ 4, II: >4). Serum t-CAF was significantly higher in the obese group compared to the controls, as were urinary α-GST, netrin-1, π-GST, and calprotectin. No difference was found between the two obese groups. In normoalbuminuric obese children and adolescents without significant metabolic disorders, serum t-CAF may be a new biomarker for the early detection of renal dysfunction, and urinary netrin-1, α-GST, π-GST, and calprotectin may be better indicators for the detection of early tubular damage, independent of the severity of obesity. Background: Dysregulation of bile acids (BAs), as important signalling molecules in regulating lipid and glucose metabolism, contributes to the development of non‐alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, static BA profiles during fasting may obscure certain pathogenetic aspects. In this study, we investigate the dynamic alterations of BAs in response to an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) among children with NAFLD. Methods: We recruited 230 subjects, including children with overweight/obesity, or complicated with NAFLD, and healthy controls. Serum BAs, 7‐hydroxy‐4‐cholesten‐3‐one (C4) and fibroblast growth factor 19 (FGF19) were quantified during OGTT. Clinical markers related to liver function, lipid metabolism and glucose metabolism were assessed at baseline or during OGTT. Findings: Conjugated BAs increased while unconjugated ones decreased after glucose uptake. Most BAs were blunted in response to glucose in NAFLD (p >.05); only glycine and taurine‐conjugated chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) and cholic acid (CA) were responsive (p <.05). Primary BAs were significantly increased while secondary BAs were decreased in NAFLD. C4 and FGF19 were significantly increased while their ratio FGF19/C4 ratio was decreased in NAFLD. The dynamic pattern of CDCA and taurine‐conjugated hyocholic acid (THCA) species was closely correlated with glucose (correlation coefficient r =.175 and −.233, p <.05), insulin (r =.327 and −.236, p <.05) and c‐peptide (r =.318 and −.238, p <.05). Among which, CDCA was positively associated with liver fat content in NAFLD (r =.438, p <.05). Additionally, glycochenodeoxycholic acid (GCDCA), CDCA and THCA were potential biomarkers to discriminate paediatric NAFLD from healthy controls and children with obesity. Interpretation: This study provides novel insights into the dynamics of BAs during OGTT in paediatric NAFLD. The observed variations in CDCA and HCA species were associated with liver dysfunction, dyslipidaemia and dysglycaemia, highlighting their potential roles as promising diagnostic and therapeutic targets in NAFLD. Background: Obesity poses a significant global health challenge, with profound implications for women's reproductive health. The relationship between ovarian reserve and body mass index (BMI) remains a subject of debate. While obesity is generally associated with poorer outcomes in assisted reproductive technology (ART), the evidence remains inconclusive. This study aimed to investigate the effect of pre-pregnancy BMI on ovarian reserve and ART outcomes in infertile patients. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study involving women who underwent in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) procedures at Tongji Hospital between 2016 and 2023. The study included 30,746 initial fresh cycles and 5,721 singleton deliveries. Patients were stratified by age and further categorized into four BMI groups: lean (< 18.5 kg/m²), normal weight (18.5–24.9 kg/m²), overweight (25.0–29.9 kg/m²), and obese (≥ 30.0 kg/m²). The primary endpoints of the study were pregnancy and perinatal outcomes. To explore the association between BMI and these outcomes, we adjusted for relevant confounding factors and utilized multivariate linear regression models, complemented by multifactorial logistic regression analyses. Results: Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels were significantly lower in the overweight and obese groups compared to the normal weight group. After adjusting for age, a negative correlation was found between AMH and BMI in the age subgroups of 20–30 and 30–35 years. Among women aged 20–35 years, those in the overweight and obese groups had significantly fewer retrieved oocytes, mature oocytes, and two-pronuclear (2PN) embryos than their normal weight counterparts. Despite these differences, pregnancy outcomes in the overweight and obese groups were comparable to those in the normal weight group across all age categories. Additionally, obesity was linked to an increased risk of gestational diabetes mellitus, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, and macrosomia. Conclusions: An age-related decrease in AMH levels was evident with increasing BMI. Aim: To comprehensively examine the associations of childhood and adulthood body size, and child‐to‐adult body size change with adult leucocyte telomere length (LTL). Methods: We included 453 602 participants from the UK Biobank. Childhood body size at the age of 10 years was collected through a questionnaire. Adulthood body size was assessed using body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist‐to‐hip ratio (WHR), fat mass index (FMI), and fat‐free mass index (FFMI). Results: Individuals with plumper body size in childhood exhibited shorter LTL in adulthood (−0.0086 [−0.0017, −0.0004]). Adulthood BMI (−0.0286 [−0.0315, −0.0258]), WC (−0.0271 [−0.0303, −0.0238]), WHR (−0.0269 [−0.0308, −0.0230]) and FMI (−0.0396 [−0.0438, −0.0351]) were negatively associated with LTL, whereas FFMI (0.0095 [0.0039, 0.0152]) was positively associated with LTL. Compared to individuals consistently having an average/normal weight in both childhood and adulthood, those who maintained or developed overweight/obesity from childhood to adulthood had a shorter adult LTL, regardless of childhood body size. Notably, the LTL shortening effect was not observed in individuals with plumper body size in childhood but normal weight in adulthood. Conclusions: Childhood and adulthood obesity are both associated with LTL shortening in adulthood. Transitioning to or maintaining overweight/obese status from childhood to adulthood is associated with shorter adult LTL, whereas this effect can be reversed if plumper children become normal weight. We aimed to investigate the associations between parental BMI and offspring BMI trajectories and to explore whether the parent-offspring BMI growth trajectory association differed according to family SEP or social mobility. We used data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC). Children's weight and height were collected from 1 to 18 years. Parents' height and weight were reported pre-pregnancy. We assessed family SEP by measuring parents' and grandparents' educational attainment, social class, and social mobility by changes in education attainment across generations. Multilevel models were used to develop trajectories and assess patterns of change in offspring BMI, to associate parental BMI with these trajectories, and explore whether these associations differed by family SEP and social mobility. 13,612 children were included in the analyses. The average BMI of offspring whose parents were overweight or obese was higher throughout childhood and adolescence, compared to those with parents of normal BMI. Parental and grandparental low SEP were associated with higher child BMI, but there was little evidence of modification of parent-offspring associations. For example, at age 15 years the predicted mean BMI difference between children of overweight or obese mothers versus normal-weight mothers was 12.5 % (95 %CI: 10.1 % to 14.7 %) and 12.2 % (95 %CI: 10.3 % to 13.7 %) for high and low grandparental SEP, respectively. These findings strengthen the evidence that higher parental BMI and lower family SEP were associated with higher offspring BMI, but we did not observe strong evidence that family SEP modifies the parental-offspring BMI association. There was a significant difference in Creatinine, Uric acid, AST, ALT, total protein, albumin, HbA1C and Haemoglobin when comparing between Boys and Girls of age greater than 10 years p-value < 0.05.In these tribal children the distribution of biochemical and haematological parameters values considerably follows the reported reference values Conclusions: This study highlights a puzzling situation of health status among these Hakki Pikki tribal children due to apparent change in socio cultural, lifestyle, nutrition, and urbanization. Objective Test the efficacy of a brief 2-hr parenting intervention in increasing protective factors against and reducing risk factors for infant obesity. Method A 2 (Baby Healthy Living Triple P vs. care-as-usual) × 3 (baseline, postintervention, 6-month follow-up) design was used. Eighty-two parents of 4- to 18-month-old infants meeting at least two risk factors for early childhood obesity (e.g. parent/child overweight, low education level) were randomized to intervention (n  =   42) or control group (n  =   40). Parents questionnaires and child weight status was measured. Results Results showed an intervention effect on a primary outcome, early feeding practices (restrictive: d  =   0.44, 95% CI [−0.01,0.88], pressuring: d = 0.11, 95% CI [−0.32,0.54], nonresponsive behaviors: (d = 0.32, 95% CI [−0.11,0.75]), and on a secondary outcome, feeding beliefs (d = 0.29, 95% CI [−0.14,0.73]). No beneficial impact was found on other primary outcomes (responsiveness in feeding: quantity d  =   0.50, 95% CI [−0.03,1.03]) and nutritive d  =   0.52, 95% CI [−0.03,1.07], mealtime environment: d  =   0.35, 95% CI [−0.78,0.08], self-efficacy in responsive feeding: d  =   0.21, 95% CI [−0.22,0.64]), or secondary outcomes (parental self-efficacy: d  =   0.08, 95% CI [−0.50,0.35]), parent emotional eating (d  =   0.01, 95% CI [−0.43,0.43]), food restraint (d  =   0.42, 95% CI [−0.85,0.02]), and body satisfaction (d  =   0.01, 95% CI [−0.43,0.43]) and child weight status (d  =   0.11, 95% CI [−0.54,0.32]). Introduction: Primary prevention is a public health strategy that hitherto has not been widely applied in obesity prevention research. The objectives were to examine the long-term effects of the Healthy Start primary obesity prevention study, an intervention conducted among healthy weight children susceptible to develop obesity. Methods: At baseline, children (2–6 years) were allocated to the intervention group (n = 271), the control group (n = 272), or the shadow control group (n = 383). Children in the shadow control group had no contact with project staff during the intervention period (1.3 years on average). The intervention was designed to deliver individually tailored improvements in diet and physical activity habits, optimization of sleep quantity and quality and reduce family stress. After the intervention was completed, height and weight at school entry were obtained from the Danish National Child Health Register when children were around 7 years. The average follow-up time was 2.7 years after baseline. Linear regression analyses on annual changes in BMI (ΔBMI) and BMI z-scores (ΔBMIz) were conducted. Results: At mean 2.7 years after the baseline examination, no differences were observed between the intervention and control group in ΔBMI (β = 0.07 [−0.02; 0.15], p = 0.14) or ΔBMIz (β = 0.04 [−0.02; 0.10], p = 0.19). Likewise, no differences were observed between the intervention and shadow control group in ΔBMI (β = −0.03 [−0.12; 0.06], p = 0.50) or in ΔBMIz (β = −0.02 [−0.08; 0.05], p = 0.62). Conclusion: We are still in urgent need of more primary overweight prevention interventions to begin to understand how to prevent that healthy weight children develop overweight. Background: Hypothyroidism can play an important role in the development of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This study compared the thyroid function tests in overweight and obese children and adolescents with and without NAFLD. Methods: This case-control study was conducted on 100 children and adolescents aged 4-18 years who referred to the endocrinology clinic of Amirkola Children's Hospital, Babol, Iran in 2021. 42 obese and overweight children with NAFLD were considered as case group and 56 persons without NAFLD as control group. They were selected after physical examination and body mass index (BMI) assessment. Then, TSH, T4, FBS, lipid profile, 25(OH) vit D3 (VD), AST and ALT levels were measured. Abdominal ultrasound was performed to survey fatty liver. T-test and Chi-score were used for analysis and p< 0.05 was considered significant. Results: The mean age in both group was 11.63±2.55 and 10.07±2.61 years, respectively (P=0.004). Hypothyroidism was not seen in the groups. Two groups in terms of mean TSH (P=0.92), T4 (P=0.87), FBS (P=0.33), cholesterol (P=0.44), LDL (P=0.35), VD (P=0.07) had no significant difference. However, difference was found between the two groups in terms of the mean level of AST (P=0.003), ALT (P=0.001), TG (P=0.02), HDL (P=0.01) and BMI (P=0.001). Conclusion: This study showed that the mean level of thyroid hormones in both groups did not have significant difference and hypothyroidism was not seen. Background: Our paper draws attention to the impact of lead (Pb) on the specificity of obesity development in children exposed to environmental pollution. An advantage of this paper is the homogeneous study group comprising children of identical age from a single geographic region. Moreover, while the influence of environmental toxins on adults has been extensively explored, this study delves into pediatric populations, which have yet to receive comprehensive scrutiny within the scientific literature. Methods: Initially, a group of 136 obese children (the research program lasted three consecutive years: 2016, 2017, and 2018) living in the north-western region of Poland, from whom biochemical tests and auxological data were obtained, were enrolled for analysis. Blood lead levels (BLLs) were determined in 115 children. The age of the children ranged from 7.1 to 10.4 years. The body mass index (BMI) of children averaged 21.5 ± 2.2. Results: The results showed that a large proportion of the participants had BLLs above the threshold for Pb. BLLs ≤ 5 µg/dL (considered safe for children and pregnant women) were found in over 70% of the participants, with BLLs in the range of 5.01–10.00 µg/dL in over 26% of the children, and concentrations > 10 µg/dL (considered toxic threshold for adults) in nearly 2% of the children. The results of our research revealed a positive association between BLLs and average systolic and diastolic blood pressure in the studied children. Moreover, we found a negative correlation between BLLs and absolute fat tissue content and triglyceride concentration. Among the included biochemical factors, only insulin demonstrated a statistically significant relationship with fat mass. This result suggests that early carbohydrate metabolism disorders in overweight children involve decreased peripheral tissue insulin sensitivity. Conclusions: Lead exposure may significantly contribute to the development of hypertension, insulin resistance, and glucose metabolism disorders in overweight and obese children. It is essential to implement multidirectional actions to increase awareness of the harmful effects of xenobiotic exposure, including lead, in order to prevent early-life exposure. Justification: There has been an alarming increase in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and it is now the most common chronic liver disease worldwide, in both adult and pediatric populations. The lack of regional guidelines has hampered the formulation of national policies for prevention and management of MASLD in children. Therefore, we formulated recommendations for steatotic liver disease in children. Objectives: To review the existing literature on the burden and epidemiology of pediatric MASLD and formulate recommendations for diagnostic evaluation, prevention, and management strategies. Process: The Indian Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition invited national and international stakeholders to participate in a consensus meeting held on April 20, 2024, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. Various aspects of pediatric steatotic liver disease were deliberated upon and a consensus document and recommendations were formulated after several rounds of discussion. Recommendations: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) should be used as the preferred term in place of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). There is a high prevalence of steatotic liver disease (SLD) among Indian children and adolescents, especially those who are overweight or obese. This condition may be progressive in childhood and associated with increased morbidity and mortality in adulthood. Various lifestyle, dietary, and genetic factors may predispose individuals to MASLD, including an increased intake of calorie-dense processed foods, sweetened sugar beverages, excessive screen time, higher sedentary time and lack of moderate to vigorous physical activity. MASLD is usually asymptomatic or presents with mild, non-specific symptoms and therefore, a high degree of suspicion is required for early diagnosis. MASLD is usually associated with cardiometabolic factors (hypertension, insulin resistance/diabetes mellitus, and/or dyslipidemia) and secondary causes should be excluded in all cases, particularly in the presence of red flag signs. Screening for MASLD should be considered in all obese children (body mass index or BMI ≥ 95th percentile) and in all overweight children (BMI ≥ 85th and <95thpercentile) with additional risk factors, such as prediabetes/diabetes, dyslipidemia, positive family history of metabolic syndrome, obstructive sleep apnea, and hypopituitarism. Abdominal ultrasound in combination with alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels should be used as a screening test for MASLD in Indian children as per the proposed algorithm. Diet (any hypocaloric diet) and exercise (aerobic, resistance, or a combination of both; moderate to high intensity; regular in frequency) remain the cornerstones of pediatric MASLD management. Pharmacotherapy and/or endoscopic/surgical techniques for obesity should be considered as adjuncts and should be considered only after a failed adequate trial of lifestyle modifications. Objectives: The Australian Government, through the National Obesity Strategy 2022–2032, has set an aspirational goal of reducing the prevalence of childhood and adolescent overweight and obesity by 5% by 2030 (from 25% to 20%). Our objective was to quantify the long-term economic benefits of achieving this goal. Methods: Using a microsimulation model and a synthetic cohort of Australian children and adolescents aged 4–17 years, we estimated the excess per capita lifetime costs of overweight and obesity. Using these results and population projections for 2030, we estimated the potential lifetime cost savings that could be achieved through attaining the National Obesity Strategy goal. Results: Compared with their peers of a healthy weight, children and adolescents with overweight and obesity were estimated to incur, per capita, excess lifetime costs (discounted) of approximately $19 700 and $46 700, respectively (in 2030 Australian dollars). Achieving the National Obesity Strategy’s goal was estimated to save approximately $7.44 billion, predominantly through reductions in lifetime obesity-related healthcare costs and premature mortality. Conclusion: Our results demonstrate the considerable economic benefits that could be achieved by reducing the current prevalence of childhood and adolescent overweight and obesity in Australia; they provide justification for investment in prevention and treatment for this demographic. Context Childhood and adolescence are critical periods for lifelong bone health. The impact of obesity on these phases is controversial, which may be due to the lack of standards for age-, sex-, and puberty-specific bone turnover markers (BTMs) that could sensitively reflect bone metabolism. Objective To generate age-, sex, and puberty stage–specific BTM reference curves in children and adolescents and to explore the effect of obesity on bone metabolism in the Chinese population. Methods Our study was part of the Evaluation and Monitoring on School-based Nutrition and Growth in Shenzhen study. A total of 800 participants aged 6∼18 years with normal body mass index (BMI) were selected to establish BTM reference curves for boys and girls at different ages under different pubertal development stages. Additionally, 200 participants with obesity (BMI > 95th percentile) were matched with healthy children from the original cohort at a 1:1 ratio. All participants underwent bone mineral density assessment, and serum levels of procollagen type 1 N-propeptide (P1NP) and β-C-telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX) were measured. Results The BTM values presented significant age, sex, and puberty stage differences. Analysis of serum BTMs based on the established reference revealed a higher percentage of low-level P1NP in boys with obesity (P =.005); no significant difference was observed in girls. However, the obese group showed a significantly higher proportion of high β-CTX levels for girls, not boys (P =.022). Conclusion We provide age-, sex-, and puberty stage–specific P1NP and β-CTX reference curves. We examined the association between low‐calorie sweeteners (LCS) consumption during preconception, pregnancy, and breastfeeding and child health outcomes. A systematic search of electronic databases in PubMed, Embase, Cumulated Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, the Cochrane Library, Scopus, Web of Science, PsycINFO, ProQuest Health and Medical, ClinicalTrials.gov, and Google Scholar was conducted up to 21 September 2023. A random effects model with restricted maximum likelihood estimation was used for the meta‐analysis. Seventeen eligible studies were included. The standardised mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) in birth weight between those who frequently consumed LCS (≥1 serve/day) during pregnancy and those who did not consume LCS was 0.04 (0.00, 0.08) (four cohort studies). Any LCS consumption during pregnancy compared with no consumption was not associated with birth weight [SMD (95% CI) = 0.03 (−0.03, 0.08)] (four cohort studies). Any LCS consumption during pregnancy was not associated with body mass index z‐scores. The weighted mean difference (95% CI) was 0.00 (−0.05, 0.06) at birth, 0.06 (−0.29, 0.40) at 6 months, −0.04 (−0.19, 0.10) at 1 year, 0.00 (−0.16, 0.17) at 3 years, and 0.10 (−0.15, 0.34) at 7 years of the child age, compared with no intake (five cohort studies). The odds of being overweight at 1 year among children exposed to LCS during pregnancy was 1.19 (OR [95% CI]: 1.19 [0.81, 1.58]) compared with unexposed children (two cohort studies). The effect sizes were not precise for all the outcomes as the 95% CI indicated the effect estimates could range from small protective to a higher risk. The effect of LCS consumption on child behaviour and cognition was inconsistent. There is not enough evidence to confirm LCS consumption during pregnancy affects birth weight and risk of overweight in children. However, frequent consumption increased birth weight and the risk of overweight at different ages, though the effects were imprecise.
