The aim of this pamphlet is to make secondary school students aware of the interdependence of peoples throughout the world and of their own responsibility to the world at large. The pamphlet is written from a Christian and a socioeconomic perspective. The text is arranged into the following broad areas of continuing world problems: the Third World, population, food, poverty, refugees, race, resources, and "one world." It is recommended that these sections be used with a map or globe, and that they be supported by additional materials from current newspapers, magazines, and television documentaries. Each section is divided into subtopics, which are often presented in question-answer format. Maps and graphs accompany the text, and several sections are followed by assignment suggestions relating to the topic, or by illustrative quotations from the Bible and other sources. A list of organizations where students may obtain additional information and a brief syllabus of suggested readings for both teachers and students are also provided. (Author/MK)

The middle school and high school lessons featured in this collection were crafted by science and math teachers who participated in a week-long seminar sponsored by the Eisenhower Professional Development Program administered by the Ohio Board of Regents. This packet of instructional materials is designed to teach teenagers about the effects of overpopulation on the world and on the individual. Information is presented in three related booklets. The first of the three parts of the "Teen Population Awareness Campaign Kit," illustrates overpopulation through profiles of teens living in Shanghai, Kenya, Barbados, and Southern California. Stories and lessons are followed by facts and figures about overpopulation, stresses on the environment, and essays relating world overpopulation to the individual. The booklet contains suggestions for making personal choices to reduce stress on resources and the environment as well as ideas on topics for school essays or speeches. The second booklet, "Food for Thought", creates a global simulation of demographics and lifestyles in different regions to show how quality of life is affected. This project includes a demographics chart and materials list, script, and instructions for presenting the activity to a group. The third booklet, "Taking Action for the Planet", offers tips for community action and environmental stewardship, gives suggestions for educating others through letter-writing to the media and government leaders, and describes petitions as an agent of change. These materials were developed by a participant in the Fulbright Summer Seminar on India. The materials provide information for teaching about world population growth, for average to above average for ninth graders in the Bethlehem Central School system (New York) using various instructional methodologies which are intended to help students develop analytical skills through a series of group activities and individual writing tasks. A major component of this methodology is linked to the use of Document Based Question (DBQ) activities. Other cooperative learning strategies include the use of small group discussions, role playing, and panel discussions. The procedure for using the DBQ model is outlined in detail with suggestions for evaluation. Research involves the use of primary, secondary, and tertiary sources. (EH)

This second issue of "Education for All: Status and Trends" focuses on the interactions between basic education and certain demographic and socioeconomic phenomena. It examines significant correlations between selected indicators and the trends in those indicators over a decade or more. It also presents projections of certain indicators to the year 2000. The introduction examines the impact of population dynamics on basic education, the impact of basic education on population, and the impact of basic education on development. The first section examines the impact of population dynamics on basic education, specifically, school-age population, school dependency ratios, population structure by age group, teacher requirements, the adult illiterate population,and educational finance. Section 2 presents data that illustrate the impact of basic education on population dynamics, including age at first marriage, fertility, child mortality, life expectancy, and rural-urban migration. The third section describes the interaction among basic education, population, and development, specifically, per capita income, employment, agricultural productivity, and reduction of gender inequities. Twenty-one figures and 3 tables present selected educational demographics and socioeconomic indicators for 96 developing countries. Annexes contain a list of countries by geographic region, a glossary, and notes on data. (LMI)

These lesson plans are the result of two regional workshops sponsored by UNESCO in Indonesia in 1989 and Pakistan in 1991. The workshops focused on the need to introduce population education core messages in the Asia-Pacific Programme of Education for All (APPEAL). These prototypes of exemplar instructional materials for primary education, literacy and continuing education programs were developed and tested during the workshops. These materials can be used by different countries in the regions as possible types of materials that can be adapted to suit their needs. The table of contents shows two parts. Introduces a model of differential equations for students--a very real overpopulation problem is occurring in the Ndumu Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, where one species of antelope, the Nyala, is crowding out another species, the Bushbuck. Constructs a competing species model to mathematically describe what is occurring in Ndumu. (ASK)

Adds a cropping or harvesting term to the animal overpopulation model developed in Part I of this article. Investigates various harvesting strategies that might suggest a solution to the overpopulation problem without actually culling any animals. (ASK)

This unit is one of a series produced for environmental education programs by the Highline Public Schools. These materials are designed for use with junior high school students studying the concept of population, population trends, and problems created by changes in populations. The seven concepts in the unit take about three weeks to complete. The materials are most easily adapted to science or geography classes. Each lesson includes the concept of the lesson, materials needed, probable time for the lesson, procedure, evaluative activity, and suggested extra activities. Human population growth and the implications of increasing population on the well-being of men and nations is examined in this twelfth grade curriculum guide which is part of a series for grades 4 through 12. The primary functions of the unit are to introduce the student to reasons for population growth, results of overextended populations, and solutions to overpopulation. Consideration is also given to political and sociological problems which arise as adjuncts to the question of population. The component parts of this guide are: an overview of the unit, the major concepts in the unit, behavioral objectives, daily schedule, lesson plans for classroom activities, a pretest for the unit, and student and teacher evaluation forms. The unit requires three weeks to complete, and is structured around 15 student-centered activities which include films, survey questionnaires, filmstrips, student readings, discussion activities, data analysis, and role playing. This booklet consists of five sample lessons integrating population education into mathematics instruction. It is one of four in a series. Materials differ from those in an earlier series (1980) in that lessons are presented at the secondary level only; there is no duplication of lessons from the earlier series in content and teaching strategies. Lessons are not only aimed at developing skills in applying addition, multiplication, their inverse operations, computing rates, arithmetical means, and average, but also are aimed at developing knowledge about various population concepts. Thus, addition, multiplication, and their inverse operations are used for computing sex ratio, population change, fertility rate, rate of natural increase, migration rate, and growth rate. A lesson teaching the construction of a frequency table using data on family size is followed by a lesson relating dependency ratios to population composition. In a final lesson, percentage is used to solve problems related to population projection and doubling time (the number of years it takes for a population to double itself). Each lesson contains a box which provides the user with information on content, objectives, grade level, and subject into which population education should be integrated. Although the main body of each lesson varies, in most cases lessons contain a narrative of the content and some evaluation questions at the end. Lessons were adapted from materials derived from Malaysia and the Philippines. (LH)

Materials differ from those in an earlier series (1980) in that lessons are presented at the secondary level only; there is no duplication of lessons from the earlier series in content and teaching strategies. Following an introduction, the five lessons focus on the consequences of rapid growth on community health; health programs to reduce the mortality rate; effects of rapid population growth on food production and nutrition; effects of family size and spacing on the health of mother and child; and age at marriage. Each lesson contains a box which provides the user with information on content, objectives, grade level, and subject into which population education should be integrated. In most cases lessons include an entry point topic, suggested time allotment, suggested procedure, summarizing techniques, suggestions for evaluation, and where applicable, necessary materials and student readings. This teaching guide accompanies the Population Growth Rate poster kit which is designed to teach students about population growth differences between rich and poor nations and about what people in developing countries are doing to help improve their quality of life. The guide is designed for use with: (1) a poster map of the world providing social and economic indicators and three statistical charts; and (2) six population education photographs with accompanying textual material about family planning, the status of women, economic and social security, education, government policies and health services. The teaching guide contains student worksheets; a student test; and a population growth data table organized by countries, and presents information about: (1) basic concepts; (2) goals and objectives; (3) World Bank data, maps, and country groups; (4) the use of statistics; and (5) terminology.
