The library of the Université libre de Bruxelles and Editions de l'Université de Bruxelles (EUB), the University's publishing imprint, have recently agreed to collaborate to provide free online access to recent out-of-print books published by EUB. The e-books are available on the Digithèque website, a collection of digital copies of printed books created by the library. This initiative is valuable for the scientific community and the general public who can freely access the books online, for the authors whose books have been digitized and widely disseminated, and for the publisher whose collections become more visible on the Internet, thereby generating more traffic on its website and potentially increasing sales of its other books. Around 20 books have been made available online so far. This article describes the context of the agreement, how the collaboration operates, the options of file conversion vs. book scanning, issues relating to copyright and users' rights, how access is provided to the digital copies, and future collaborative projects of the library and EUB. Abstract: This study addresses the question: Can the specialized process of acquiring out-of-print books be outsourced successfully to private vendors? The study reports the results of a case study of the decision to outsource out-of-print acquisitions at LaGuardia Community College in the City University of New York. Data were collected and analyzed regarding acquisitions costs, fulfillment rate, condition of books received, and overall success of the venture. The study concludes that the benefits of outsourcing outweigh the additional expense of vendor handling charges and suggests that libraries can successfully outsource routine tasks while maintaining control over important acquisitions decisions. The article discusses the architecture of Justinian bridge located over the Sangarius (modern Sakarya) region in Turkey and attempts to find the date of writing of the book "De Aedificiis" by the ancient scholar Procopius. It is stated that Procopius could have written the book in 560/561 AD and sensibly avoided all mention of the structural damage to S. Sophia's domes to avoid offence to king Justinian. It is stated that the book is a panegyrical work designed to maximize Justinian's reputation as a builder and a ruler. According to bibliographer Ellen Wells, earliest ‘true scientific reprints’ were published in 1748 and 1750. The popularity peak phase of reprints lasted for 70 years (1900–1970) until photocopier became routine office equipment. Based on 52 brief letters published in ‘Science’ between 1920 and 1970, the functions, varied use and problems with reprints are noted. A few quantitative studies on reprint request patterns, as viewed from reprint senders and reprint recipients are reviewed. The article focuses on Andrea L. Foster's "Judge Dismisses Challenge to 4 Laws That Archivists Say Skew Concept of Copyright," which was published in the November 30, 2004 issue of "The Chronicle of Higher Education." A federal judge has ruled against legal scholars and archivists who challenged current copyright law in hopes of making it easier to archive old literature and films on the Internet, where they would be available free to the public. The archivists argued that four copyright laws are collectively keeping people from gaining access to out-of-print books, old films and academic articles that have little or no commercial value.

The article discusses the scarcity of the subject catalogue of the House of Commons usually being distributed in south-east of England and the solutions made possible by Chadwyck-Healey Limited. The author mentioned that the parliamentary paper was a vital tool for the study of the nineteenth century in Britain and in South America. He also reported that the Irish University Press decided to publish a 1000 volume series reprints of selected papers yet only small proportion of the papers were reprinted to solve the problem. The author also said that the company introduced microfiche reprints of the House of Commons Parliamentary Papers because of the incompetence of the first reprinted papers. Contracts between authors and publishers will have to be redrawn due to the introduction of new technology. Many of the contracts specify the copyright to books which have been out-of-print for more than eight weeks should return to the control of the author. Publishers now have the capability, due to the new technology, to reprint single copies of books. They offer a printing service for customers who wish to purchase out-of-print books. Yet authors with similar equipment could offer the same service and retain the profits. The situation has yet to be tested in the courts.

The article reports that the English antiquarian, bookseller, and Somerset herald, John Warburton (1682- 1759) has claimed to have collected, over many years, about sixty early modern dramatic manuscripts, of which all but three were unluckily burnt or put under Pye bottoms by his cook. Among the treasures lost to posterity were plays attributed to various dramatists including William Shakespaere. Warburton's handwritten catalogue of his collection and his note about its fate are in the British Library.
