In the shadow of various business scandals and societal crises, scholars and practitioners have developed a growing interest in authentic leadership. This approach to leadership assumes that leaders may access and leverage their "true selves" and "core values" and that the combination of these two elements forms the basis from which they act resolutely, lead ethically, and benefit others. Drawing on Heidegger's work, we argue that a concern for authenticity can indeed instigate a leadership ethic, albeit one that acknowledges the unfounded openness of existence and its inherent relationality. On this basis, we propose an ethics-as-practice approach in which leaders respond to the situation at hand by being "attuned to attunement," which cultivates an openness to otherness and a responsibility to others. The purpose of this paper is to critique current women-only coach education initiatives, before suggesting an alternative approach to dealing with gender discrimination in coaching provision. Having increased in popularity over recent years, primarily through justifications as being "safe spaces" for participants, such initiatives have nevertheless become contested terrain. Whilst seeing some value in the initial "safe space" position, we argue that their substance should be focussed not so much on duplicating mainstream content (e.g., particular coaching pedagogies), but on developing a critical sociological consciousness, including both a deconstruction and reconstruction of (minority) coaching selves. Such a consciousness comprises (1) a judicious awareness of influencing social structures and why things are as they are and (2) a recourse to micropolitical agency in terms of a stance-related identity to develop a more secure coaching self. Science fiction has often been described as the encounter with difference as this is a genre that enables readers and viewers to experience what it means to be the other. With alterity playing a prominent role in most recent science fiction through traditional figures within the genre such as the alien, the robot or the android, it is interesting to approach works with an ecofeminist perspective as to explore how otherness is portrayed. This article aims to explore City of Pearl, the first novel of The Wess'har Wars series by Karen Traviss looking at the different species, human and alien, that appear in the novel. The focus will be on how they relate with other species as well as with their own habitat. In order to do so I will consider both posthumanist and ecofeminist theories and how they intersect in the protagonists’ sets of beliefs and ethics, also taking into account how certain organisms present in the novel alter biology so that the boundary between species is constantly challenged and changing. Therefore, this novel questions dualistic notions embedded in our reality and enables both protagonists and readers to reflect on concepts related to evolution or exceptionalism. The construing process allowing people to give shape and meaning to their experience is what personal construct psychology (PCP) is primarily interested in. Particular emphasis is placed on one's construction of experience of other people, which makes PCP psychology concerned first and foremost with relationality. It would therefore be improper to speak of a relational turn in PCP, as is often done about the recent developments in psychoanalysis and in other psychological and psychotherapeutic approaches. But, based on the PCP literature of the last few decades, it is our opinion that we are witnessing what seems to be an attempt to highlight even more clearly the centrality of human relatedness in Kelly's theory, to the point of clarifying, extending, or partially revising its original formulation. Phenomenology places the experience of otherness at the core of its philosophical perspective. However, the meaning of this form of experience is complex and varies according to each thinker. Husserl started an investigation that led to many other different approaches, all related to that of the founding father, but also entertaining mutual connections between them. In this paper the outline of Husserl's position is offered with some discussions, and then a sketch of Sartre's, Merleau-Ponty's and Levinas's is provided in order to show some of the main issues involved in this question. Husserl outlines his position in an apparently paradoxical way, as he poses the problem of solipsism not so much to refute it, but to deepen it, radicalize it, and thus also identify an unexpected and fruitful solution. Faithful to the principle according to which the phenomenological science of experience must be "in the first person", he thus assumes the paradox of solipsism, that is, the problem of how I can understand and experience the experience of another I, of an alter ego, to show that in fact this is not only plausible but also perfectly understandable. Otherness is thus seen to be not only a major problem of phenomenology, but the question concerning the foundation itself of this particular approach. The debate issued from Husserl's original outline allowed other thinkers to deepen the question and bring the investigation further, toward a direction that directly involves other disciplines and is still debated among phenomenologists today. This article explores the complex connections between gentrification, heritage and othering in Amsterdam Oost, a district shaped by intertwined (post)colonial and (post)migrant histories. It does so by examining two temporary heritage‐making initiatives coordinated by the nearby ethnographic Tropenmuseum to celebrate the rich immigration history of the area. Building on the notion of 'gentrification consciousness' (Sze, 2010), we draw attention to the ambivalent position of the museum towards gentrification in Amsterdam Oost, and how this ambivalence may contribute to the unfolding of neoliberal urban redevelopment in the area. The projects at the centre of our analysis promote a positive and edifying representation of local diversity as an asset to be protected, celebrated, and valorized; yet they also mobilize problematic colonial tropes that are instrumental in transforming the area into a space of aestheticized multicultural urbanity attractive to a Dutch middle class with an increasingly cosmopolitan outlook. While scholarship on heritage‐led gentrification and cosmopolitan urbanism has amply discussed how local governments, developers and newcomers alike strategically mobilize ethnic heritage discourses and practices to trigger or sustain gentrification, our study reveals heritage institutions as emergent subjectivities in neoliberal urban politics and problematizes their growing imbrication within processes of gentrification. This article investigates the influence of YouTube's monetization metrics on content creation practices and their reflection of geopolitical and economic factors. Using the case study of "Team Azimkiya," a Bangladeshi YouTube channel primarily targeting South Korean viewers, the study introduces the concept of "global CPM arbitrage." CPM, or cost per 1000 impressions, estimates advertising revenue for channels. Global CPM arbitrage characterizes content creators' strategic approach to leverage varying CPM rates across geographic regions, optimizing their advertising revenue within the YouTube ecosystem. While CPM is often seen as an objective metric, the analysis of Team Azimkiya's strategies reveals its role in constructing audiences and directing higher-revenue viewers. In a platform that exhibits a preference for content from more affluent regions, self-Orientalization emerges as an effective content creation approach. Politicians are increasingly using existing hashtags or creating new ones to amplify the visibility and dissemination of their messages. However, research on the pragmatic functions of hashtags in conflictive political discourse remains relatively scarce. This study examines the pragmatic functions of hashtags and how they affected the (im)polite tone of the tweets by the Iranian Foreign Minister and the U.S. Secretary of State between November 2018 and November 2019, focusing on the ongoing conflict between their respective countries. Hashtags (N = 294) related to the conflict were collected and thematically analyzed. Several categories of hashtags, including slogans, institutions, countries and regions, treaties, conferences, cultural references were identified. Their pragmatic functions included alliance building, othering, presenting a positive self-image, warning, criticism, and justifications. The analysis, informed by Culpeper's (2011) impoliteness framework, indicates that hashtags serve strategic purposes, allowing politicians to justify face threats and impolite language by invoking moral order. We discuss how even seemingly neutral-sounding hashtags like country names can be used to intensify the impoliteness of a tweet, imply solidarity or othering, and influence public opinion. • The study examines impoliteness in international political discourse. • It analyzes hashtags in tweets by the US and Iranian diplomats. • Hashtags serve pragmatic functions in diplomatic exchanges. • Hashtags serve as tools for criticism, alliance-building, othering, and more. • Hashtags categorized by pragmatic function reveal diplomatic strategies (e.g., appeal to the moral order). This paper follows the implications of Gadamer's hermeneutics after Truth and Method in which the forming of social life, and with it the idea of worldly understanding, receives greater attention. I argue that the emphasis in his later writings on worldly understanding draws less on the idea of the hermeneutic circle and problematic of the Geisteswissenschaften in which the concept of tradition is prominent than on the movement in language and the encounter with the other. As in the example of translation, I argue that this movement has the character of passage from one place to another that holds within it an element of opacity. The development of this issue draws on a comparative analysis with the work of the Caribbean philosopher Édouard Glissant. From this analysis I show how Gadamer's hermeneutics addresses the issue of understanding across cultures and in mixed cultures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article demonstrates how Cristina Rivera Garza's idea of collective authorship dismantles the myth of writing as a solitary activity. Topics discussed include singularity and otherness of authors especially those who are targeted by discriminations, the rewriting of authorship by breaking singularity, writing as a profession rather than a convocation, and dependency and reproduction as the groundwork for understanding literature as a common good rather that autonomy and originality.

‘Asia as Method’ is widely and significantly discussed in Cultural Studies in Asian societies as a cultural praxis to confront Western imperialism and formulate alternative politics. In search of methods of transformative politics in the Hong Kong context, in which we understand the situation as the ‘elephant in the room’, we re-open the debate on methods of cultural studies, suggesting ‘commoning’ as an embedded pathway to achieve potential social transformation. Taking a new left stance, we provide a critical review of the scholarships of Elinor Ostrom, J.K. Gibson-Graham, Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri, and David Harvey to re-ground ‘commoning’ as a method of Cultural Studies through cultural critique and political economy analysis. We understand that becoming common is a battle – its success lies not in the boundary-setting of commons or their institutional arrangements nor in promoting imaginary places or utopias outside the orbit of global capitalism. Still, radical subjectivities are required to transform the logic of capital and state as the guiding principle of socio-economic, political, cultural, and sustainable lives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article addresses relations between concepts of 'self', 'other(s)' and 'othering' through a reading of the revolutionary psychiatrist Frantz Fanon's psychoaffective phenomenological and pedagogical narrative approach, reading his work as phenomenological and educational as well as critiquing phenomenology, psychology, education and (of course) psychiatry. While most—especially educational—commentators base their engagement with Fanon's revolutionary materialist phenomenology of racialised embodiment and consciousness on his first book, Black Skin White Masks and attend to his final book, Wretched of the Earth as expressing his core political and philosophical analyses, this article focuses in particular on Fanon's second and middle book, A Dying Colonialism, evaluating the political possibilities of the specific narrative temporalities elaborated there. Notwithstanding its rather dismissive reception, it is argued that this, middle, book—written during, and as a document of, the Algerian liberation struggle—expresses and develops Fanon's psychopolitical and performative philosophy of subjective and objective transformation from alienation to emancipation. This philosophy works pedagogically, in imagining the transformation of relations between others, as well as between self and others, including relations between coloniser and colonized, as also between and within selves. AbstractThe Covid-19 pandemic made biopolitical decisions, including on vaccine approval, a subject of public discussion, challenging governmental legitimacy at the level of its biopolitical underpinnings. We draw on Foucault’s notion of the ‘caesura’ to interpret governments’ responses as wielding their biopower by making medicalised distinctions, first between the ‘vulnerable’ and the ‘non-vulnerable’ and then, as vaccines became available, between the ‘vaccinated’ and the ‘unvaccinated’. However, we show that in the public debates over the approval of Sputnik V in the European Union—that is, over who counts as ‘appropriately vaccinated’—such medicalisation was combined with geopolitically informed boundary-drawing (and othering/inclusion) vis-à-vis Russia, both in the vast majority of member states that refused approval and in Hungary, which granted it. We analyse how the ‘customisable’ mixing of geopolitical and medical arguments constituted distinct legitimation strategies to establish the governments in question as the effective and legitimate loci of biopolitical authority. Background: Cannibalism is a practice based on the assimilation of the enemy, characterized by different ritual phases. The cultural anthropologist Francesco Remotti provides insight into this practice, stating that the Tupinamba tribes – an ethnic group living along the Eastern Atlantic coast of Brazil – use it to demonstrate their superiority over the defeated group. After capturing a prisoner, the assimilation process begins, which prepares the prisoner for the cannibalistic act through a specific sequence of steps. Summary: Remotti’s research on cannibalism is applicable to the world of narcissism. The way a narcissistic individual relates to others is a paradigmatic example of cannibalistic rituals. This study aimed to catch the structural components of the narcissistic relationship, rooted in Remotti’s anthropological perspective, and to explore the associated phenomenological and psychopathological characteristics. This paper gives an account of Gilles Deleuze's and Jean-Paul Sartre's respective conceptions of "the Other" as this concept evolves in relation to Sartre's earliest insights into self/Other dynamics in his 1937 essay, The Transcendence of the Ego. By reading Deleuze through his early interlocutor—the philosopher and author Michel Tournier—I argue that the account of Otherness presented in Deleuze's early (and later disavowed) "Sartrean" works represents a critique of Sartre's own revisions to the concept of Otherness in his 1943 magnum opus, Being and Nothingness. Thus, we can read Sartre and Deleuze as offering competing views of how (and indeed if it is possible) to inherit Sartre's own early insights into the value of existential phenomenology for a "positive" account of interpersonal relationships. The relationship between “religion and politics” and the various manifestations of religion in society are topics of discussion that remain consistently relevant in both everyday life and professional circles. These relationships are highly dynamic and can manifest in multifaceted, complex, and diverse ways. This multidimensionality in relationships is also reflected in the concepts themselves. The article, which focuses on Christian theopolitics in the United States through contemporary examples, highlights the othering codes inherent in theopolitics. Consequently, the problem addressed in our study possesses a sociological dimension that extends beyond its religious and political aspects.Initially, a theoretical framework was established through a literature review, followed by an analysis of Christian Zionism and Neo-Conservatism within this framework. In this context, the first section of the article which consists of an introduction and two main sections, engages in a conceptual discussion regarding our core concept, “Theopolitics,” and provides fundamental information about the theological background of Christian theopolitics. The second section examines Christian Zionism and Neo-Conservatism in the United States and the issues arising from their relationship with political institutions from a theopolitical perspective. The aim of our study is to demonstrate that theopolitics is not merely a political and religious problem but also a sociological issue due to its othering effects on society. Indeed, our findings reveal that the agendas of both Christian Zionists and Neo-Conservatives, which we evaluate as theopolitical, not only lead to political consequences but also result in a deeply rooted and sharply defined othering process derived from theological sources. This article aims to study how 'seeing' and 'being looked at' (the gaze) interplay in constructing citizens' idealized-self and the refugee-other in Turkey. The theoretical part of the article conceptualizes the lateral panopticon and ontological status of the gaze in the context of migration and refugee studies. By using field data, the empirical part of the article discusses how the objectifying gaze leads to othering and silencing practices. It further applies Lacanian concepts of object-petit-a, lack, and the split subject to identify how the Refugee Gaze leads to dual ruptures in nationalist and Islamist fantasies in Turkey. A crucial finding of this research is that while the gaze assigns Syrians an objectified position by naming them 'refugee', this very marginalization, in turn, punctures the receiving community fantasy. This finding could open new ways to better comprehend receiving community-migrant/refugee integration. Eventually, the article calls for further field studies that examine experience through the gaze in migration and refugee studies to understand deep-rooted causes of 'othering' and new ways to examine receiving community and migrant/refugee interactions. The pericope of demonic possession in Mark 5 invites us to reject a simplistic aversion to uninterpretable experiences. Engaging with Julia Kristeva's concept of abjection encourages readers to recognize that embracing heterogeneous otherness can create new opportunities for both individuals and communities. This study critiques the limited and normative conception of mentally diverse bodies as being confined within a single boundary, and it represents the (un)interpretability of these bodies. Through a reading of Mark 5:1–20 that considers perceptions of the demonic, negotiating identity and agency, and a way of representation within a community, this study argues for the importance of mutuality, the experience of becoming a body of abject, and the epistemic acceptance of the uninterpretable in order to engage with the interpret-'able'. The Oxford Times ran a headline in May 1896 that stated in bold capitals 'STRANGE DEATH OF A HINDOO', detailing the circumstances of the death of Baboo Mookhi Singh, who, it seems, was the first (known) Indian grocer in Oxford. While today, the pioneering research by Rozina Visram related to the presence of Asians in Britain, that of Antoinette Burton in the late-Victorian period, or Michael Fisher's work on counterflows to colonialism, is not new, the majority of research regarding the presence of Indians in the British Isles is either scant for this period of time, or related to ayahs and lascars, or to poets, intellectuals, and aristocrats, with considerable research also related to the Indian military. The majority of times, that research has also focused solely on London. The originality of this research paper provides material heretofore undocumented related to an early settler in Oxford from India (1880s–1890s): Baboo Mookhi Singh (1867–1893), Oxford's first grocer, and tea importer from India. He originated from Benaras (Varanasi) and arrived in Britain, where he set up a business in the centre of Oxford. However, what he encountered there was name-calling, verbal as well as physical harassment, and ultimately his death in strange circumstances. He seemingly came alone, although his import business, which boasted the best tea not only in Oxford, but in the whole country, was run by the 'Singh Brothers' (his brother remaining in India). While Singh most certainly travelled via the Suez Canal to Britain, the country to which he was travelling would have been both familiar and unfamiliar to him. However, due to the lack of resources available, all too often common people, such as Singh, have been neglected. In this article, newspaper reports and material from the numerous trials (mostly initiated by Singh against the local people and his immediate neighbours) are brought together, as well as the coroner's reports, and the police notes to determine Singh's struggle for recognition, and his attempt at resistance. This paper documents his struggle for cultural/geographic space, to redress the imbalance of power, and gain agency. Despite his attempts at resilience, he did, in the end, die. However, Singh was a pioneer in a struggle for power, a stand for resistance, and how the law perceived him, in his difference, changing the community around him, albeit on a small scale. It is a telling story that resurfaces an early Indian settler in Britain, his alterity in Victorian society, and the latter's attitudes towards race. The study employs a postcolonial critique of the media coverage during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. By using literature on whiteness and Islamophobia and the need for a postcolonial critique, the author analyzes the hegemonic rhetoric surrounding the Ukrainian refugee crisis in comparison to coverage of violence directed toward brown bodies. The study also juxtaposes a postcolonial critique against vernacular readings of how social media users reacted to the attacks. Otherness is a complex and polysemic notion that is conceptualized in both philosophy and psychology. The paper examines otherness as a universal phenomenon of the human psyche that manifests in relation to oneself and interpersonal relationships with others. Philosophical ideas, including those of Hegel, Lévinas and Waldenfels, are introduced as providing essential theoretical background for psychological studies of otherness. The psychological section deals with otherness from various perspectives, with emphasis on internal processes of an individual, drawing on theories within psychoanalytical and intrapsychic traditions, as well as the intersection of otherness and identity. Otherness is introduced as a variable influencing complex individual and social processes, such as the perception of individuals and groups. Finally, a taxonomy of otherness is proposed that reflects the multifaceted nature of the concept and could help navigate the existing literature as well as guide new studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present historical-philosophical and theoretical-methodological considerations aim to contribute to the systematization of the conceptual corpus of the Semiotic-Cultural Constructivism in Psychology (SCC). We address its founding issues and identify the course of knowledge construction in the field, taking into account its most recent developments and ramifications. From 2011 to 2018, we observe the expansion and increasing dissemination of the perspective of the SCC in interdisciplinary studies on diverse phenomena. Boesch, Valsiner and Marková are among the thinkers in psychology most frequently referenced in the research field, particularly with regards to their views on how each research study is in itself both a unique process and an effort towards general knowledge construction. The researcher's unique relationship with the phenomenon-theme of investigation is a type of alterity relation. The innovative potential of research lies precisely on the frontier between the thought and unthought dimensions of a given tradition to which the researcher belongs; certain elements of the tradition remain beyond the researcher's understanding of themselves, their surroundings, and their study theme. From the epistemological, ontological, and ethical standing of the referred studies in the field, we outline the theoretical-methodological implications of the constitution of the researcher's position; a brief illustration based on the narrative of a case study will be used to discuss it. This paper examines the everyday processes of othering and exclusion of particular religious communities in expanding urbanscapes. It maps how deliberate contests are produced over cities' histories, politico-cultural legacies and spatial arrangements, to isolate and displace communities. Specifically, it addresses how exclusion of Muslim residents is constructed in social and spatial terms in contemporary urban India. Focussing on the middle-sized central Indian city of Bhopal, I explore the emergent tensions that have steadily consolidated invisible, yet often impermeable, mental borders within that setting. In doing so, I highlight the disturbing implications of these processes of boundary making and solidification. I discuss what they mean for the everyday existence of people and communities, and how they produce fractured urbanisms. Drawing upon a mixed approach, I piece together archival records, press reports and a wide selection of other literature, as well as on-field conversations and observations, to examine how the city of Bhopal is sought to be reimaged as Hindu, and its socio-spatial character reconfigured, isolating and disenfranchising its Muslim residents. This essay investigates the representation of Indians and Nepalese Gurkhas of the British Indian Army in Polish Second World War memoirs. It argues that by focusing on the Other's social, religious, and physical differences, the authors constructed an exoticised image of the South Asians that contributes to the perception of war as a site of Orientalism. Since the Poles faced the British imperial army apparatus that manipulated the relations with the Other through its hierarchical organisation, the analysis explores the power relations implicated in the Polish-South Asian encounters. The study is based on excerpts from twenty memoirs written by soldiers of the Polish Armed Forces who cooperated with the British Indian Army in North Africa, the Middle East, and Italy. The paper proposes a framework for thinking about digital technologies, including AI, in education. The framework combines Don Ihde's postphenomenology and Seymour Papert's constructionism. The former is rooted in the philosophy of technology, the latter – in education and technology. The intersections between the two theories have been mentioned but not explored. There are biographical affinities between the two thinkers, and their ground-breaking works were published in adjacent years – Ihde's Technics and Praxis in 1979 and Papert's Mindstorms: Children, Computers, and Powerful Ideas in 1980. The intersection between the two theories is examined through a review of constructionism through the prism of the Ihde's four postphenomenological relations showing how each relation matches a major constructionist thread: for embodiment relations, personalization fits; for hermeneutic relations – computational thinking; for alterity relations – microworld; and for background relations – democratization. Over the last half-century, an industry of sense-making and psy-management has emerged to narrate an increasingly "special" population of third culture kids (TCKs): children with highly mobile formative contexts, living between countries and cultures. Producing categories of identification and models of development through dominant monocultural assumptions, TCK literature performs colonising epistemological disciplines of coding difference as risk and capital. In this article, we trouble the prevailing assumptions and frameworks that narrate TCK identity through a paradox of unrecognisability, integrating autobiographical responses to theorise questions about accounting for one another and ourselves as subjects of otherness. Decoding movements of posthuman commitments to disrupting universalising god tricks offer memories of encountering paradigms of ab-normality in TCK accounts as ruptures that open up new possibilities. Beyond restrains of normalising frameworks, unusual life stories flow in affirmative, relational, and creative accounts of responsive citizenship in between and among multiple countries and cultures. Migration is a topic of heated debate, yet it is relatively absent from sociological theory discussions. This article analyzes the extent to which structural de-thematization or specific framing of migration shapes sociological perspectives by focusing on approaches that have been canonized as "classics." Through a rereading of Karl Marx, Max Weber, and W. E. B. Du Bois, I address absences and show how these authors have nevertheless constructed certain figures of migration: as a passive figure of forced mobility, a threatening figure of otherness, and an active figure of social transformation. How these authors depict migration is both symptomatic of their approach but also of a contemporary sociological and sociopolitical discourse that can be critically reflected in relation to these works. By showing how migration is treated in these different intellectual projects, the article contributes to a genealogy of sociological thought and its impact on contemporary perspectives regarding migration, diversity, and inequality. Based on an interview-driven ethnographic study of the Swedish digital BDSM, fetish and kink platform Darkside, this article explores digital kink expressions at a moment when kink communities are both marginalized and seemingly mainstream, navigating a tricky balance between visibility and invisibility, intelligibility and unintelligibility. Across queer, postcolonial, and digital media theorizing, "opacity" provides a way of rethinking these tensions, challenging the idea of public visibility and identification as that which legitimizes sexual otherness. Building on this work, I suggest the term "kink obscurity" as a way of conceptualizing a set of tactics for sexually marginalized groups to exist, resist, and transgress without becoming fully visible or graspable. To these ends, I foreground a "closet positive" analysis of Darkside, not primarily of shame, secrecy, and isolation, but of shared spaces of vulnerability and intensity, a temporary safe house which partly protects against normative regulation. Although the platform activist ethos speaks to the value of openness and outness for the sake of sexual justice, the users are quite invested in anonymous and pseudonymous online presence and sexual expression. Opacity implies a lack of clarity; something opaque may be both difficult to see clearly as well as to understand. Drawing on Édouard Glissant's idea of opacity as a form resistance to surveillance and imperial domination, a digital sexual politics of obscurity could help provide recognition without a demand to fully understand sexual otherness, opening up for new modes of obscure and pleasurable sexual expressions and transgressions. This paper gives an account of Gilles Deleuze's and Jean-Paul Sartre's respective conceptions of "the Other" as this concept evolves in relation to Sartre's earliest insights into self/Other dynamics in his 1937 essay, The Transcendence of the Ego. By reading Deleuze through his early interlocutor—the philosopher and author Michel Tournier—I argue that the account of Otherness presented in Deleuze's early (and later disavowed) "Sartrean" works represents a critique of Sartre's own revisions to the concept of Otherness in his 1943 magnum opus, Being and Nothingness. Thus, we can read Sartre and Deleuze as offering competing views of how (and indeed if it is possible) to inherit Sartre's own early insights into the value of existential phenomenology for a "positive" account of interpersonal relationships. The search for a possible unity in cultural multiplicity, or in other words, for an anthropologically sharable meaning, can arise from pluralistic dialogue in the aesthetic sphere that involves sensible knowledge or understanding. Since the audiovisual puts concrete acts and specific gestures into an aesthetic form, it offers the possibility of an empirical exchange with otherness, mobilising the sensorium in the perception and understanding of our diversity and at the same time our similarity to the other. In the audiovisual, observing the practices of the intangible cultural heritage of others can potentially raise awareness of, interest in, and give value to that which is not identical, contributing to the development of a pluralist paradigm of thought, open to diversity. Audiovisual works that artistically represent cultural heritage practices related to manual agricultural labour can amplify our understanding of the other, even of those marginalised by globalization. Cities are large and densely populated areas, a fact that can influence how individuals relate to each other. However, the intensity and dynamism of cities make them a site for particular kinds of divisions, which may produce inequalities. This is visible through residential segregation, which is the territorial division of groups into largely homogeneous areas correlated with socio-economic disparities and individuals' negative perceptions of otherness. At the very least, residential segregation delimits what some can get from cities in terms of accessing resources and respectful treatment. According to Elizabeth Anderson, it is necessary from a normative perspective to remedy residential segregation with integration. Drawing on her approach, I put forward a relational egalitarian diagnosis, as well as an integrationist project, to help foster mutual respect between city dwellers. In order to operationalise this normative demand, but in a way distinct from Anderson's project, I explore what is lost when integration focuses only on physical changes, overlooking role divisions in cities and a fair participatory process for achieving equality. This article deconstructs the Australian national identity through the "othering" of China amidst the coronavirus pandemic. During this time, Australia–China relations reached one of their lowest points in recent history. It examines the diplomatic fallout and the media frames used to portray China in the image of mistrust, fear, threat, and a place of disease and sickness. Through this process of "othering," the Australian media reassigned and redefined its national identity and what it meant to be an Australian in the global order. The article engages with public discourse, highlighting the media's influence in narrating, shaping, and reinforcing the values of the national identity. It argues that these negative perceptions of China, place China in the seat of the "other" and serve to juxtapose and strengthen the Australian identity that is democratic, liberal, free, and just. This article is concerned with a ‘lightness that is as far as possible from triviality’. It argues, firstly, that a connection can be drawn between comic perception and pictures of reality that entail transcendence, understood as an otherness at the heart of things that may be indirectly glimpsed but never fully grasped as the object of fixed knowledge. To picture transcendence as enigmatically near within immanence, rather than set abstractly over against it, introduces a sense of relativity and ambivalence into experience. This yields a comic lightness which is nonetheless philosophically serious because it has to do with truth. This has implications, secondly, for understanding selfhood. The essay looks at three accounts of transcendence in this context: the arguments of Socrates regarding the divine madness of eros in Plato's Phaedrus; the development of a more radical conception of transcendence via biblical sources in Philo and Augustine; and the application, via a reconceived Cartesian cogito, of a more moderated account of transcendence in the philosophy of Maurice Merleau‐Ponty to the themes of self‐knowledge and sincerity. In all cases, the affirmation of transcendence destabilises the ‘mundane’ world and human knowledge of it, and relocates the subject's centre of gravity outside themselves via a characteristic movement of release. In all of them, to grow towards truth requires a renunciation of self‐possession and secure self‐knowledge: the self must give itself over to transcendent otherness if it is to become what it more truly is. Both world and self increase in mystery in these different renditions, and this is where humour and lightness break in. The realisation of this mysteriousness is not a cause for despair, however, but the means by which one is freed from illusory claims to absolute knowledge (whether of world or self), and journeys towards truth, held now more lightly and with a greater sense of wonder. ABSTRACT Much of Charles S. Peirce's philosophy hinges on his “universal categories” of Firstness (qualities, potentialities), Secondness (action, otherness) and Thirdness (relationship, rule‐boundedness). Despite their abstractness, the categories have concrete applications and shed light on several critical realist theories, such as its ontological domains, its social ontology and its more nascent semiotics. Using Peirce's categories this way requires building on his effectively non‐deterministic materialist arguments and extricating his ontology from his better‐known phenomenology. Peirce's universal categories, which are stratified and emergent, unearth a systematic pattern unifying critical realist ontologies and address certain problems elsewhere in critical realist philosophy. Most significantly, Peirce's semiotics provides critical realism with the mechanism connecting epistemology to ontology and grounds a case for reconceptualizing critical realism's empirical domain as the semiosic domain. The visual devices employed by the artists Anton Kannemeyer and Brett Murray to criticise apartheid-era patriarchal rule seemed to have remained intact in their satirical critiques of black male leadership, yet their later works generate markedly different affects. This difference in affect is explored through the application of key Lacanian concepts (primarily the RSI and jouissance). It is argued that a slippage in the operation of the signifier demonstrates the tensions, complexities and anxieties that underpin white male subjectivities in times of radical transition. It is proposed that the artists’ jouissance, an irrepressible and destructive kind of enjoyment fuelled by the feeling that one’s rightful enjoyment is not only denied but has indeed been stolen by a cultural other, is behind the production of these works and is responsible for its affects. The paper is a comparative reading of dissociation and spirit possession as worthwhile tropes of analyzing the fragmented selves to lay basis of interpretation of similar works with African and Western cultural heritages. In spite of availability of critical works on pathological consequences of othering on African immigrants, this comparative reading is absent. Some literary scholars interrogate the clinical trope and point out the need to incorporate both the clinical and spirit possession tropes, whereas most literary scholars focus on clinical madness as a consequence of othering, this paper extends it to spirit possession among migrant characters. The article adopts postcolonialism and concepts from diverse fields to enable comparison of the clinical and possession tropes with reference to Brian Chikwava’s Harare North (2009). The study is anchored in ideas of scholars from different disciplines such as depth psychology (dissociation) and anthropology (spirit possession) as theoretical bases of interpretation. To ensure a flawless interaction of these theorists who occupy different academic disciplines, I foment an interdisciplinary exegesis by adopting Ato Quayson’s ‘Calibrations’ theory, which is a fine-tuned tool for textual close reading that ‘oscillates’ rapidly between different domains – the literary-aesthetic, the social, the cultural, and the political. In J. M. Coetzee’s two anti-colonial novels, Waiting for the Barbarians and Foe, the white colonizer narrators are fascinated with the inexplicable signs of torture on the subaltern bodies. Scholars have critiqued that, despite Coetzee’s narrative experimentation, the subaltern characters are still objectified under the colonizer’s gaze and remain silenced. Drawing on fascination studies, this essay argues that Coetzee’s novels aim to reflect and ultimately deconstruct the narrative of fascination operated in colonial storytelling. Symbolized by the medusa’s image, fascination indicates an unsettling engagement with something that elicits simultaneous attraction and repulsion in the beholder’s mind. This essay first examines how Coetzee’s novels reveal the fictionality of “the fascination with the primitive,” a pervasive element in colonial discourse used to construct otherness. Second, it explores how Coetzee’s narrators reach the aporia of the narrative of fascination, where the seductive power of storytelling collapses when confronted with the unknowable other’s silence. By framing the narrative of fascination within metanarrative terms, Coetzee challenges the narrative authority and sovereign subjectivity traditionally upheld in Western literature, while also prompting readers to reflect on their own roles as interpreters and consumers of such stories, particularly those involving the suffering of others. The global resurgence of right-wing radicalization presents significant theoretical and political challenges for critical thought. Contemporary neoliberal authoritarianism integrates diverse and often contradictory ideological elements, creating a complex and enigmatic constellation. This article examines the mechanisms of social aggregation underpinning neoliberal subjectivity today. Drawing on empirical findings from my study of the social appropriation of the concepts of "Law" and "Market" in contemporary Argentine society, I argue that authoritarian neoliberalism gains mass appeal by offering individuals symbolic frameworks of belonging. Central to this process is the construction of a collective "We," framed through an appeal to equality that paradoxically serves as a vehicle for punitive desires directed toward a phantasmic otherness. The case of these new modes of social aggregation highlights how the egalitarian principle retains legitimacy among social actors, albeit in a distorted form when tied to exclusionary political demands. Introduction: In this paper, we wish to elucidate alterations of basic existential and intersubjective configurations in schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) through the phenomenon of Anderssein ("feeling different"). Anderssein is an important yet neglected notion from German psychiatry, referring to a specific sense of feeling profoundly different from others occurring in SSD. Although phenomenological-psychopathological research mentions it as an aspect of the core disturbance of SSD (namely, "self-disorders"), the phenomenon has not yet been explored in empirical or theoretical detail. Method: We present material from a phenomenological-empirical study on the mode and onset of psychosis based on qualitative interviews with 25 patients with SSD. Results: Most of the participants in our study report having felt fundamentally and often ineffably different since childhood and articulate it as a sense of existing "outside" of the shared reality. Intersubjective reality appears progressively unreal or inauthentic, and simultaneously, the patient's intimate, subjective sphere is permeated by an alien otherness. Importantly, this outside position should be understood carefully as it is often accompanied by the sense of being invaded by social rules, other people's thoughts, or emotions. Incipient psychosis is described as a gradual extension of precedent alterations of the structures of (inter)subjectivity. Conclusion: We conceptualize the ontological feature of Anderssein as an altered "being in-between" – that is, some sort of halting of the dynamic movement between particularity and intersubjectivity. The Dutch othering discourse represents Moroccans as the most problematized group in society. Their designation as such entails being homogeneously perceived as the backward others whose culture is incompatible with the mainstream. In this rhetoric, men are represented as being oppressive patriarchs and women as passive victims who need to be rescued. This article examines alternative representations of Moroccan-Dutch people in Daria Bukvic's (2021) Meskina and the undeniable heterogeneity of their experiences and subjectivities. The film provides progressive portrayals of Moroccan-Dutch women as independent individuals with agency and full control over themselves, their choices, bodies, decisions, and men as supportive and open minded. It foregrounds their heterogeneity and agency through a focus on their negotiations and constructions of their subjectivities to answer back the essentializing Dutch discourse which constructs their otherness on the premise of being isomorphic. The analysis confirms that the film functions as a counter narrative to the established othering rhetoric in the Netherlands through problematizing the conventional attributes and traits associated with Moroccan-Dutch subjects and simultaneously deconstructing their alleged isomorphism. Inheritance is both an unsettled and structuring concept of contemporary life. This paper argues that inheritance is an analytic through which difference comes to matter. Following Casarino's (2002) discussion of 'last' and 'other' limits, I show that inheritance both serves as a mechanism through which difference is captured and domesticated into systems of technoscience and law, and that it evidences the inability of these systems to capture fully its alterity. Taking a wide-ranging and interdisciplinary approach, the paper develops an analytic that explores and expands biosocial understandings of inheritance through two 'limit cases': first, the search for and reclamation of inheritance dispossessed in the Transatlantic trade in enslaved people; second, questions of queer reproduction and inheritance. The paper concludes by offering an analytic of inheritance not simply as a force of difference but also as a way of orienting political and ethical thought in the Anthropocene. In this paper we examine how offline protests attended by members of the Australian far-right shape online interactions. Tweets about the 2019 St Kilda beach rally were collected. Users were manually classified as supporters (n = 104) or opponents of the rally (n = 872). Network analysis demonstrated that interactions between the two groups increased at the time of the rally. Natural language processing showed that both groups became angrier and used more "othering" language during the rally. However, there were stark differences in the moral worldviews, highlighting the very different moral positions that underpin engagement with, and opposition to, the far-right agenda. Part one of this article introduces the conception of friendship and its connection with forgetfulness in Derrida and the Zhuangzi. Part two deals with the ethical focus of the discourse of friendship in Derrida and the Zhuangzi, which addresses the underlying relationship of oneself-other. Part three reveals how temporality and fleetingness are recognized as elements of friendship by Derrida and the Zhuangzi. While the Zhuangzi lacks the Derridean melancholic tone, this recognition helps both take the disruption, otherness and mourning of friendship into account. Part four relates the Zhuangzian mutual forgetfulness of friends through effortless action (wuwei) to the Derridean criticism of classical friendship as 'the second self' and his assumption of difference, distance and disruption for friendship. Embracing these three 'D's' leads Derrida to the structural ineluctability of forgetting to friendship. However, the Zhuangzi characterizes its ideal friendship in a style of simplicity, calmness, openness, desiring less and avoiding extremity, to emphasize naturalist suitability.
