Objectives: To provide recommendations that will build a better foundation for research on youth smoking cessation. Methods: The Youth Tobacco Collaborative Cessation panel evaluated youth tobacco cessation literature and convened meetings to reach consensus. Results: Methodological issues include design, recruitment and retention, follow-up, measurement, and youth vernacular. Research gaps include youth characteristics, theoretical approaches, delivery settings, and type of provider. Thirteen key research components for reporting are addressed. Conclusions: Given the dearth of studies on youth smoking cessation, scientifically rigorous studies need to be conducted with attention to methodological issues, research gaps, and reporting of key research components.

Evaluated effect of smokers' hotline as adjunct to self-help manuals. Subjects (n=1,813), assigned to manual only or manual plus hotline condition, were followed over 18 months. Results showed consistent, significant hotline effect across outcome measures and follow-up periods. Findings suggest effectiveness of hotline in enhancing self-help quit rates. (Author/NB)

The effect of a smokers' hotline as an adjunct to self-help manuals was examined. Subjects were 1,813 smokers recruited from a 10-county rural and small urban area. Counties were matched on demographic characteristics and assigned to a manual only or manual plus hotline condition. Subjects were followed over an 18-month period. Hotline services included taped messages and access to paraprofessional counselors. Results show a consistent, significant hotline effect across outcome measures and follow-up periods. This effect emerged either as a main effect for the hotline or as an interaction with enrollment method such that a significant hotline effect emerged for subjects who enrolled through face-to-face methods. These findings indicate the effectiveness of the hotline in enhancing self-help quit rates.

Randomized 40 clinically depressed women to running, weight lifting, or delayed treatment conditions. Assessed self-concept at baseline, pre-, mid-, and post-treatment for all subjects and at 1, 7, and 12 months for exercise groups. Found significant improvements in self-concept for exercise groups relative to controls; no significant differences between exercise groups. Improvements were reasonably well-maintained over time.
