As investigations in the biomedical applications of plasma advance, a demand for describing safe and efficacious delivery of plasma is emerging. It is quite clear that not all plasmas are "equal" for all applications. This Perspective discusses limitations of the existing parameters used to define plasma in context of the need for the "right plasma" at the "right dose" for each "disease system." The validity of results extrapolated from in vitro studies to preclinical and clinical applications is discussed. We make a case for studying the whole system as a single unit, in situ. Furthermore, we argue that while plasma-generated chemical species are the proposed key effectors in biological systems, the contribution of physical effectors (electric fields, surface charging, dielectric properties of target, changes in gap electric fields, etc.) must not be ignored. Semi-empirical quantum models such as Density Functional Tight Binding (DFTB) are attractive methods for obtaining quantum simulation data at longer time and length scales than possible with standard approaches. However, application of these models can require lengthy effort due to the lack of a systematic approach for their development. In this work, we discuss the use of the Chebyshev Interaction Model for Efficient Simulation (ChIMES) to create rapidly parameterized DFTB models, which exhibit strong transferability due to the inclusion of many-body interactions that might otherwise be inaccurate. We apply our modeling approach to silicon polymorphs and review previous work on titanium hydride. We also review the creation of a general purpose DFTB/ChIMES model for organic molecules and compounds that approaches hybrid functional and coupled cluster accuracy with two orders of magnitude fewer parameters than similar neural network approaches. In all cases, DFTB/ChIMES yields similar accuracy to the underlying quantum method with orders of magnitude improvement in computational cost. Our developments provide a way to create computationally efficient and highly accurate simulations over varying extreme thermodynamic conditions, where physical and chemical properties can be difficult to interrogate directly, and there is historically a significant reliance on theoretical approaches for interpretation and validation of experimental results. The biochemical composition and bioavailability of particulate organic matter (POM) were studied in relation to abiotic (water column stratification, macronutrient concentrations) and biotic factors (phytoplankton biomass and functional groups) in the open Ross Sea and coastal area of Terra Nova Bay, Antarctica, during the austral summer 2017. The presence of different sub-systems was highlighted by spatial and temporal variations of all the considered variables, characterised by higher concentrations of particulate organic carbon and nitrogen in Terra Nova Bay, where diatoms dominated, while in the open Ross Sea was higher the contribution of haptophytes (Phaeocystis antarctica Karsten, 1905). The southernmost Ross Sea was characterised by significantly higher concentrations of carbohydrates in the entire water column. High lipid contribution and low photosynthetic activity indicated aged POM, suggesting that POM was composed mainly by the remnants of previous haptophytes production. The higher lability of the carbohydrates indicated that an increase of haptophytes in the area could alter the biogeochemical C cycle, reducing the storage of refractory carbon in the depths, and favouring the transfer and respiration of C in the trophic web, with a decrease of export rate in the Ross Sea. The application of machine learning (ML) techniques for understanding and predicting organic matter (OM) and harmful algal blooms (HABs) in freshwater systems has increased significantly with the availability of abundant data and advanced monitoring technologies. However, there is a lack of comprehensive reviews concentrating on practical applications and delving into the potential risks associated with misrepresentation or inflation in constructing ML models. This review aims to bridge these gaps by providing a comprehensive overview of various aspects of ML applications in the context of OM and HABs in freshwater systems. It covers practical ML applications for rapid assessment, early warning, and driver analysis, highlighting the diverse range of techniques employed in these areas. Furthermore, it discusses the challenges and considerations associated with data handling, including using in situ and remote sensing data and the importance of appropriate data-splitting techniques to avoid data leakage. To ensure unbiased and reproducible results, this review offers recommendations for model improvement, such as utilizing explainable ML techniques to gain insights into model behavior and avoiding overreliance on a single ML algorithm. It also emphasizes the significance of deploying ML models through user-friendly interfaces, enabling non-experts in ML to effectively utilize these models in real-world water environments. Doping engineering is a feasible strategy to construct highly efficient photocatalysts. Herein, Ce and Fe mono- and co-doped CaWO 4 catalysts were synthesized by precipitation method followed by annealing and the degradation activities were tested for the removal of tetracycline antibiotic under visible light irradiation. The experimental results indicated that the photocatalytic activity was greatly improved by co-doping of Ce and Fe elements, in which Fe ions significantly narrowed the band gap energy while Ce dopant increased the oxygen vacancies of CaWO 4 catalyst. The effects of several experimental conditions (solution pH, initial concentration, co-existing anions, heavy metals, and organic matter) were examined, and the degradation mechanism was explored by radical trapping tests. Furthermore, the photocatalytic efficiency of Ce/Fe–CaWO 4 catalyst was investigated under natural sunlight irradiation and the degradation performance slightly decreased from 98.4% (simulated sunlight) to 86.8% (natural sunlight) following five repeatability tests, indicating the exceptional stability in outdoor environment. This study proposes a landscape-based scenario for the origin of viruses and cells, focusing on the adaptability of preexisting replicons from the RNP (ribonucleoprotein) world. The scenario postulates that life emerged in a subterranean "warm little pond" where organic matter accumulated, resulting in a prebiotic soup rich in nucleotides, amino acids, and lipids, which served as nutrients for the first self-replicating entities. Over time, the RNA world, followed by the RNP world, came into existence. Replicators/replicons, along with the nutritious soup from the pond, were washed out into the river and diluted. Lipid bubbles, enclosing organic matter, provided the last suitable environment for replicons to replicate. Two survival strategies emerged under these conditions: cell-like structures that obtained nutrients by merging with new bubbles, and virus-like entities that developed various techniques to transmit themselves to fresh bubbles. Strong rainfalls and river floods are becoming increasingly frequent and intense in southern Europe. Mediterranean coastal lagoons, due to their hydrological characteristics, could mitigate the consequences of such events, whose effects on sediment biogeochemistry are poorly studied, yet. To provide insights on this, we investigated short-term changes in organic matter quantity, composition, nutritional quality, degradation rates, and turnover time in a lagoonal benthocosm. Both flooding and recovery phases increased the sedimentary organic load and turnover time, whereas phytopigment contents and C degradation rates were not affected. The biochemical composition varied during both phases, with an increase in carbohydrate and lipid after the flooding, and an increase in protein and chlorophyll-a after its recovery. Our results suggest that even sudden changes in salinity caused by floods and their recovery can increase sedimentary organic loads, with minor effects on their nutritional quality. The observed effects of the flooding persist in the short-term also after the recovery of the salinity, when the substrates are pre-eminently of heterotrophic origin. Our results suggest that extreme, even if short-lasting, episodic events of flooding and recovery can severely alter the benthic trophic status of coastal lagoons, having possible effects on benthic trophodynamics. Extending the family of oxothiomolybdates, the interaction of the cyclic anion [Mo8O8S8(OH)8(C2O4)]2− and the complex [Mo4O4S4(C2O4)5]6− with organic compounds of the azole series—pyrazole (pzH) and 1,2,4-triazole (trzH) in water solution and in the melt of ligands was investigated. In water solution pyrazole plays only the role of cation (upon protonation) to form the complex (pzH2)2[Mo2O2S2(C2O4)2(H2O)2]. While in the reaction in melt of pzH in the case of the initial cyclic anion, the resulting anionic product [Mo6O6S6(pz)6(MoO4)]2− represents a pioneering example of a cyclic oxothiometalate {Mo6} anchored by the coordination of six bridging pyrazolates (pz), complemented by a MoO42− core. At the same time, the interaction of [Mo4O4S4(C2O4)5]6− with pzH and trzH melts yields the binuclear clusters [Mo2O2S2(C2O4)2L2]2−, where L = pzH or trzH. Specialized pro‐resolving lipid mediators (SPMs) are known for their anti‐inflammatory and pro‐resolving actions. The aim of the present study was to find new functions of the SPM resolvin D1n‐3 DPA (RvD1n‐3 DPA) on oral epithelial cells. As a starting point, we used a dataset obtained by RNA high‐throughput sequencing of oral epithelial cells exposed to TNF‐α and RvD1n‐3 DPA versus TNF‐α alone. GOrilla enrichment analysis showed that the actin cytoskeleton was significantly overrepresented after adjustment for multiple hypothesis testing. As actin, amongst others, is closely related to cell migration, we then explored whether RvD1n‐3 DPA can modulate oral epithelial cell migration. To this end, we used an in vitro cell migration model, including TNF‐α treatment, to mimic an inflammatory cell state. The analysis revealed that RvD1n‐3 DPA increased oral epithelial cell migration in the presence but not in the absence of TNF‐α. Addition of RvD1n‐3 DPA also induced F actin accumulation around the cell nucleus, indicating that RvD1n‐3 DPA potentially can mediate processes of intracellular transport. Sodium percarbonate (SPC) is recently developed as the most promising alternative for liquid H2O2 on the sewage treatment, because of its excellent explosion-resistance, high stability and safety. Herein, we first designed and synthesized a series of Mo-based/carbon nanocomposites (MoCNs) with core–shell and nanorod structures, derived from metal organic frameworks, for activating percarbonate in the efficient removal of tetracycline. The detailed characterizations confirmed MoCN-600 (a mixture of MoO3, MoC and MoO2) exhibited a nanorod structure with outer Zn and Co co-doped carbon layer. MoCN-600/SPC system exhibited a strong anti-interference ability for common anions and organic matter in TC degradation. Quenching tests and EPR results demonstrated that ·CO3− was the dominating reactive oxygen species in MoCN-600/SPC system. Compared with H2O2, MoCN-600/SPC system presented the excellent catalytic performance in TC degradation at a wider pH range. Podologists are exposed to many occupational hazards, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from insole manufacturing and noise/vibration during nail or tissue grinding. In this study, VOCs, noise, and vibration were measured in five podiatry clinics and three offices. Questionnaires were administered to 23 podologists and 19 office workers to inquire about their pain, ocular, skin and respiratory complaints. The results showed that the podologists' exposure to the total VOC concentrations was approximately twice as high as that of the office workers. The podologists' complaints regarding pain were found to be correlated with ambient noise and hand-arm vibration levels. Ocular, skin, and respiratory complaints were also found to be correlated with total VOC concentrations. These results suggest that VOCs, noise and vibration in the working environment may impair podologists' health and that they have an intensifying effect on each other, increasing the severity of health issues. This research focuses on understanding the spatial variation of Soil Organic Matter (SOM) and pH levels in the North of Morocco. The study employs a comprehensive approach to enhance predictive modelling, incorporating the Boruta algorithm for effective environmental covariates selection and optimizing model parameters through hyperparameter optimization. Utilizing a Random Forest (RF) model with remote sensing indices and topographic features, the research predicts SOM and pH to identify key contributors to their spatial variability. SOM prediction saw significant success, with a notable correlation to remote sensing indices such as the RVI, NDVI, and TNDVI. These indices, indicative of vegetation health and productivity, emerged as primary influencers of SOM. In comparison, the influence of topographic features like elevation, slope, and aspect was found to be less significant. Conversely, predicting pH was challenging due to the minimal spatial variability within the dataset. Addressing this limitation could involve dataset expansion or alternative models for low-correlated data handling. Despite the RF model's limited efficacy in pH prediction, an observable correlation between SOM and pH was identified, consistent with prior research. Areas with higher SOM exhibited lower pH values, indicating relative soil acidification from organic matter decomposition. The study's RF model demonstrated potential in SOM prediction using remote sensing indices, but enhancing pH prediction is essential. Future research may explore dataset expansion, diverse sampling, or testing alternative predictive models for better performance with low-correlated datasets. It is widely recognized that the input of organic matter in tropical agriculture is essential to maintain productivity and soil quality. This study aimed to investigate the dynamics of organic C pools and CO2 emission influenced by organic compost fertilization and leucaena biomass in an area of 6 years under organic farming. The system consisted of 5 treatments based on 5 levels of fertilization with organic compost (0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 t ha−1). Each block was surrounded by leucaena and their pruning's were distributed in equal proportions for all treatments. Two rotating crops were performed per year, cabbage/corn. Soil samples were collected in the 0–10 and 10–20 cm layers in 2-year seasons. TOC and N stocks were between 23.1 and 51.6 t ha−1, and 2.1 and 5.4 t ha−1, respectively. The highest compost doses increased the microbial biomass C and N. The increase in microbial biomass was followed by higher emissions of C-CO2. Increased microbial quotient values indicated C accumulation in the system by a higher amount of active metabolic C. The microbial biomass was less efficient in the use of the high organic compost doses. The dose of compost should be reduced and applied constantly by the farmers to attend the plant demand by nutrients and increase the efficiency of C sequestration in the soil. Despite the significant discovery of hydrocarbon in the Cretaceous Deep-Water Tano Basin of Ghana, detailed molecular characteristics and paleo-depositional environment of the Basin are insufficiently documented in peer-reviewed works. Therefore, in our study, gas chromatography-mass spectrometric (GC-MS) and gas chromatographic (GC) analyses were used to characterize biomarkers obtained from organic matter (oils and rock extracts) to determine the organic matter source, the environment of deposition, and maturity. Sixteen (16) oil and ninety-eight (98) rock samples from seven wells were studied. The work has indicated that distributions of these biomarkers suggested that Cretaceous oils were derived from a mixed kerogen source (marine and terrestrial) deposited in anoxic to suboxic paleo depositional conditions. CPI, Ts/Tm and C29 ββ/(ββ + αα) sterane ratios plotted against C29 20S/(20S + 20R) sterane ratios indicates that the studied samples are relatively low to medium level maturity. Throughout history, bricks have been an important part of monumental and vernacular architecture but often suffer alteration due to physico-chemical weathering and require replacement. Local soil could be used to fabricate compatible replacement bricks with similar physico-chemical characteristics as historic ceramics. Here the mineralogical and textural evolution of bricks prepared with local soil containing iron-oxyhydroxides and organic matter and fired between 800–1100 °C are evaluated. The study provides direct evidence for solid state formation of anorthite in contact with carbonate grains and sheds light on the fate of iron compounds under oxidizing and reducing conditions (induced by the presence of organic matter) and their influence on the textural evolution of fired bricks. Brick durability and compatibility are discussed based on their hydric and mechanical performance. The findings of this study further the understanding of temperature-induced soil mineral changes and have practical implications for the design of compatible bricks for heritage conservation and new construction. In recent decades, the traceless nature of visible photons has been exploited for the development of efficient synthetic strategies for the photoconversion of colourless compounds, namely, photocatalysis, chromophore activation, and the formation of an electron donor/acceptor (EDA) complex. However, the use of photoreactive coloured organic compounds is the optimal strategy to boost visible photons as ideal reagents in synthetic protocols. Herein, by using siloxypropadienes as the precursors of allyl copper(I) species, a copper(I)‐catalyzed diastereoselective and enantioselective reductive allylation of ketones was achieved, providing both syn‐diols and anti‐diols in good to excellent enantioselectivity. DFT calculations show that cis‐γ‐siloxy‐allyl copper species are generated favorably with either 1‐TBSO‐propadiene or 1‐TIPSO‐propadiene. Moreover, the steric difference of TBS group and TIPS group distinguishes the face selectivity of acetophenone, leading to syn‐selectivity for 1‐TBSO‐propadiene and anti‐selectivity for 1‐TIPSO‐propadiene. Easy transformations of the products were performed, demonstrating the synthetic utility of the present method. Neurodegenerative diseases represent one of the utmost imperative well-being health issues and apprehensions due to their escalating incidence of mortality. Natural derivatives are more efficacious in various preclinical models of neurodegenerative illnesses. These natural compounds include phytoconstituents in herbs, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and marine and freshwater flora, with remarkable efficacy in mitigating neurodegeneration and enhancing cognitive abilities in preclinical models. According to the latest research, the therapeutic activity of natural substances can be increased by adding phytoconstituents in nanocarriers such as nanoparticles, nanogels, and nanostructured lipid carriers. They can enhance the stability and specificity of the bioactive compounds to a more considerable extent. Nanotechnology can also provide targeting, enhancing their specificity to the respective site of action. Marine heterotrophic prokaryotes primarily take up ambient substrates using transporters. The patterns of transporters targeting particular substrates shape the ecological role of heterotrophic prokaryotes in marine organic matter cycles. Here, we report a size-fractionated pattern in the expression of prokaryotic transporters throughout the oceanic water column due to taxonomic variations, revealed by a multi-"omics" approach targeting ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters and TonB-dependent transporters (TBDTs). Substrate specificity analyses showed that marine SAR11, Rhodobacterales, and Oceanospirillales use ABC transporters to take up organic nitrogenous compounds in the free-living fraction, while Alteromonadales, Bacteroidetes, and Sphingomonadales use TBDTs for carbon-rich organic matter and metal chelates on particles. The expression of transporter proteins also supports distinct lifestyles of deep-sea prokaryotes. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the global oceans is an important long‐term carbon sink. Connections between molecular size, reactivity, and isotopic characteristics show that DOC exists on a continuum from biologically reactive to recalcitrant. The driving mechanisms behind the creation and persistence of recalcitrant DOC remain unknown. We show mean recalcitrant DOC (isolated via solid‐phase extraction; SPE‐DOC) δ13C values are 1.3 ± 0.6‰ lower than mean total DOC δ13C between depth ranges 0–200 m and 2–4 km on three GO‐SHIP Repeat Hydrography cruises. Lowest observed δ13C values correlate with low ∆14C and proximity to deep ocean hydrothermal systems. These data support the hypothesis that reworking of DOC through the microbial carbon pump is a key driver of the ocean's long‐term carbon sink. Mass‐balance modeling shows deep‐ocean DOC not captured by SPE is enriched in 13C, highlighting the need for continued research on non‐retained DOC to predict mechanisms that drive ocean carbon storage. Benzoxazoles and benzothiazoles are a class of aromatic heterocyclic compounds having similar ring structures, in which a benzene ring is fused to the 4 and 5 positions of the 1,3-oxazole and 1,3-thiazole rings respectively. They constitute an interesting class of organic compounds due to their powerful and significant biological, agrochemical, pharmaceutical and physicochemical activities. Indeed, benzoxazole and benzothiazole derivatives possess a wide range of applications, such as: anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticonvulsant, antitubercular, antifungal, pesticidal, anticorrosive, complexing properties and so on. The synthesis of benzoxazole and benzothiazole derivatives has attracted much attention from several researchers across the world and numerous synthetic methods have been developed to access these compounds over the past decades. Tandem reactions are one of the effective measures for efficiently utilizing ammonia borane for organic conversion. However, in conventional reaction systems, mismatched reaction rates or too-long reaction times will cause excessive pressure in the reaction vessel, wastage of the hydrogen source, or reduction of the reaction efficiency. Therefore, higher requirements are proposed for the reaction system to utilize ammonia borane fully and rapidly for organic conversion. Herein, a novel Pickering emulsion stabilized by nanoparticles, which include emulsifying particles and hydrophilic particles, was developed as the reaction system for series-parallel catalysis. The emulsifying particles were carboxyl-modified silica nanoparticles loaded with Pd, and were endowed with pH-responsiveness, and catalysis and emulsification properties, and adsorbed at the oil–water interface of the emulsion. The hydrophilic particles were silica nanoparticles loaded with Pd and dispersed in a continuous phase. Ammonia borane released hydrogen in the water phase, while water-soluble organic matter and oil-soluble organic matter were hydrogenated in the water phase and oil phase, respectively. The reaction rates of dehydrogenation and hydrogenation were very close, resulting in efficient use of ammonia borane. The conversions of styrene and 2,5-dihydrofuran (2,5-DHF) reached as high as 95.42% and 96.08%, respectively. In addition, since the emulsions were endowed with pH-sensitivity, this enabled oil–water separation using a simple strategy. After 5 cycles, there was still a high conversion rate of organic matter. Summary: Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) transport substantial plant carbon (C) that serves as a substrate for soil organisms, a precursor of soil organic matter (SOM), and a driver of soil microbial dynamics. Using two‐chamber microcosms where an air gap isolated AMF from roots, we 13CO2‐labeled Avena barbata for 6 wk and measured the C Rhizophagus intraradices transferred to SOM and hyphosphere microorganisms.NanoSIMS imaging revealed hyphae and roots had similar 13C enrichment. SOM density fractionation, 13C NMR, and IRMS showed AMF transferred 0.77 mg C g−1 of soil (increasing total C by 2% relative to non‐mycorrhizal controls); 33% was found in occluded or mineral‐associated pools.In the AMF hyphosphere, there was no overall change in community diversity but 36 bacterial ASVs significantly changed in relative abundance. With stable isotope probing (SIP)‐enabled shotgun sequencing, we found taxa from the Solibacterales, Sphingobacteriales, Myxococcales, and Nitrososphaerales (ammonium oxidizing archaea) were highly enriched in AMF‐imported 13C (> 20 atom%). Mapping sequences from 13C‐SIP metagenomes to total ASVs showed at least 92 bacteria and archaea were significantly 13C‐enriched.Our results illustrate the quantitative and ecological impact of hyphal C transport on the formation of potentially protective SOM pools and microbial roles in the AMF hyphosphere soil food web. Summary: Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi play an important role in soil organic matter (SOM) formation and stabilization. Previous studies have emphasized organic compounds produced by AM fungi as persistent binding agents for aggregate formation and SOM storage. This concept overlooks the multiple biogeochemical processes mediated by AM fungal activities, which drive SOM generation, reprocessing, reorganization, and stabilization. Here, we propose an updated conceptual framework to facilitate a mechanistic understanding of the role of AM fungi in SOM dynamics. In this framework, four pathways for AM fungi‐mediated SOM dynamics are included: 'Generating', AM fungal exudates and biomass serve as key sources of SOM chemodiversity; 'Reprocessing', hyphosphere microorganisms drive SOM decomposition and resynthesis; 'Reorganizing', AM fungi mediate soil physical changes and influence SOM transport, redistribution, transformation, and storage; and 'Stabilizing', AM fungi drive mineral weathering and organo–mineral interactions for SOM stabilization. Moreover, we discuss the AM fungal role in SOM dynamics at different scales, especially when translating results from small scales to complex larger scales. We believe that working with this conceptual framework can allow a better understanding of AM fungal role in SOM dynamics, therefore facilitating the development of mycorrhiza‐based technologies toward soil health and global change mitigation. Background: Thesium chinense Turcz. (Named as Bai Rui Cao in Chinese) and its preparations (e.g., Bairui Granules) have been used to treat inflammatory diseases, such as acute mastitis, lobar pneumonia, tonsillitis, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and upper respiratory tract infection. However, the material basis, pharmacological efficiency, and safety have not been illustrated. Methods: Anti-inflammatory activity-guided isolation of constituents has been performed using multiple column chromatography, and their structures were elucidated by NMR spectroscopy and ECD calculations. The inhibitory effects on lung inflammation and safety of the crude ethanol extract (CE), Bairui Granules (BG), and the purified active constituents were evaluated using lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated acute lung inflammation (ALI) mice model or normal mice. Results: Seven new compounds (1–7) and fifty-six known compounds (8–63) were isolated from T. chinense, and fifty-four were reported from this plant for the first time. The new flavonoid glycosides 1–2, new fatty acids 4–5, new alkaloid 7 as well as the known constituents including flavonoid aglycones 8–11, lignans 46–54, alkaloids 34 and 45, coumarins 57, phenylpropionic acids 27, and simple aromatic compounds 39, 44 and 58 exhibited anti-inflammatory activity. Network pharmacology analysis indicated that anti-inflammation of T. chinense was attributed to flavonoids and alkaloids by regulating inflammation-related proteins (e.g., TNF, NF-κB, TGF-β). Furthermore, constituents of T. chinense including kaempferol-3-O-glucorhamnoside (KN, also named as Bairuisu I, 19), astragalin (AG, Bairuisu II, 12), and kaempferol (KF, Bairuisu III, 8), as well as CE and BG could alleviate lung inflammation caused by LPS in mice by preventing neutrophils infiltration and the expression of the genes for pro-inflammatory cytokines NLRP3, caspase-1, IL-1β, and COX-2. After a 28-day subacute toxicity test, BG at doses of 4.875 g/kg and 9.750 g/kg (equivalent to onefold and twofold the clinically recommended dose) and CE at a dose of 11.138 g/kg (equivalent to fourfold the clinical dose of BG) were found to be safe and non-toxic. Conclusions: The discovery of sixty-three constituents comprehensively illustrated the material basis of T. chinense. T. chinense and Bairui Granules could alleviate lung inflammation by regulating inflammation-related proteins and no toxicity was observed under the twofold of clinically used doses. The pursuit of advanced multifunctional compounds has gained significant momentum in recent scientific endeavours. This study is dedicated to elucidating the synthesis, rigorous characterization, and multifaceted applications—encompassing anti-corrosion, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties—of Diethyl 4-(5-bromo-1H-indol-3-yl)-2,6-dimethyl-1,4-dihydropyridine-3,5-dicarboxylate. The 1,4-dihydropyridine derivative was meticulously synthesized through a strategic reaction of ethyl acetoacetate, ammonium acetate, and 5-bromoindole-3-carboxaldehydein the ethanol medium at 60 C. Subsequent spectral validations were conducted using sophisticated techniques, namely FTIR, NMR, and Mass spectrometry, resulting in data that perfectly resonated with the hypothesized chemical structure of the compound. Its anti-corrosive potential was assessed on mild steel subjected to an aggressive acidic environment, employing comprehensive methodologies like gravimetric analysis, Tafel polarization, and EIS. Concurrently, its antimicrobial prowess was ascertained against a spectrum of bacterial and fungal pathogens viz., Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas, Candida albicansandAspergillusniger, leveraging the disc diffusion method and using Gentamicin as a reference standard.The empirical results illustrated a substantial decrement in corrosion rates with ascending concentrations of the organic compound, achieving an apex of anti-corrosive efficacy at 81.89% for a concentration of 2 × 103 M. Furthermore, the compound outperformed Gentamicin in antimicrobial screenings, manifesting superior efficacy against all tested pathogens. The antioxidant potential, quantified using the DPPH free radical scavenging assay against ascorbic acid as a benchmark, was found to have an IC50 value of 113.964 ± 0.076 µg/ml.This comprehensive investigation accentuates the paramount potential of the synthesized dihydropyridine derivative in diverse domains—from industrial applications as a corrosion inhibitor to therapeutic avenues given its pronounced antimicrobial and antioxidant capabilities. Solvents influence the structure, aggregation and folding behaviors of solvatochromic compounds. Ultrasensitive solvent mediated chiroptical response is conducive to the fabrication of molecular platform for sensing and recognition, which however, remains great challenges in conceptual or applicable design. Here we report a cysteine‐based single benzene chromophore system that shows ultrasensitivity to solvents. Compared to the ratiometrically responsive systems, the chiroptical activities could be triggered or inverted depending on the substituents of chiral entities with an ultralow solvent volume fraction (<1 vol %). One drop of dipolar solvents shall significantly induce the emergence or inversion of chiroptical signals in bulky phases. Based on the experimental and computational studies, the ultrasensitivity is contributed to the intimate interplay between solvents and chiral compounds that anchors the specific chiral conformation. It illustrates that structurally simple organic compounds without aggregation or folding behaviors possess pronounced solvatochiroptical properties, which sheds light on the next‐generation of chiroptical sensors and switches. An extended class of organic multi‐redox systems was derived from bicyclic(alkyl)amino carbenes (BICAACs). The highly‐conjugated system undergoes a total of 4 redox events spanning a 1.8 V redox range. These organic compounds exhibited four different stable redox states (dication, radical cation, neutral and radical anion), and all of them were characterized either by single crystal X‐ray study and/or various spectroscopic studies. Three of the four redox states are stable to air and moisture. The availability of stable multiple redox states demonstrated promise towards their efficacy in the symmetric H‐cell charge/discharge cycling. Among various redox states, the dication/neutral state works efficiently and continuously for 1500 cycles in 2e− charge/discharge process outside glovebox in commercially available DMF with minimum capacity loss (retaining nearly 90 % Coulombic efficiency). Surprisingly, the efficiency of the redox cycle was retained even if the system was exposed to air for 30 days when it slowly regenerated to the initial deep blue radical cation, and it exhibited another 100 charge/discharge cycles with a minimal capacity loss. Aplacophoran molluscs are shell-less and have a worm-like body which is covered by biomineralized sclerites. We investigated sclerite crystallography and the sclerite mosaic of the Solenogastres species Dorymenia sarsii, Anamenia gorgonophila, and Simrothiella margaritacea with electron-backscattered-diffraction (EBSD), laser-confocal-microscopy and FE-SEM imaging. The soft tissue of the molluscs is covered by spicule-shaped, aragonitic sclerites. These are sub-parallel to the soft body of the organism. We find, for all three species, that individual sclerites are untwinned aragonite single crystals. For individual sclerites, aragonite c-axis is parallel to the morphological, long axis of the sclerite. Aragonite a- and b-axes are perpendicular to sclerite aragonite c-axis. For the scleritomes of the investigated species we find different sclerite and aragonite crystal arrangement patterns. For the A. gorgonophila scleritome, sclerite assembly is disordered such that sclerites with their morphological, long axis (always the aragonite c-axis) are pointing in many different directions, being, more or less, tangential to cuticle surface. For D. sarsii, the sclerite axes (equal to aragonite c-axes) show a stronger tendency to parallel arrangement, while for S. margaritacea, sclerite and aragonite organization is strongly structured into sequential rows of orthogonally alternating sclerite directions. The different arrangements are well reflected in the structured orientational distributions of aragonite a-, b-, c-axes across the EBSD-mapped parts of the scleritomes. We discuss that morphological and crystallographic preferred orientation (texture) is not generated by competitive growth selection (the crystals are not in contact), but is determined by templating on organic matter of the sclerite-secreting epithelial cells and associated papillae. Organofluorine compounds find extensive application in the fields of agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, materials science, and molecular imaging. Introducing fluorine atoms can provide organic compounds with unique physicochemical properties or improve their biological activity. Although significant progress has been made in the chemical synthesis of fluorine‐containing compounds, achieving selective fluorination under mild conditions remains extremely challenging. Introducing biocatalytic approaches in organofluorine chemistry is an important strategy given their high efficiency, selectivity, and environmental friendliness. In this review, we present the discovery of fluorinated natural products and fluorinases, the crystal structure and the directed evolution of fluorinases, with a focus on recent advances in the enzymatic synthesis of fluorine‐containing compounds in recent years. Graphite carbon nitride (g‐C3N4) has garnered considerable attention due to its excellent photocatalytic properties for the degradation of organic matter in wastewater treatment. Herein, sulfur‐doped g‐C3N4 nanosheets (CN−S‐X) were successfully synthesized via physical steam activation using thiourea and urea as precursors. Comprehensive characterizations demonstrate that the enhanced photocatalysis is attributed to the ultrathin structure, highly active site, vacancy defects, and high specific surface area due to the synergy of S doping and steam activation. The as‐prepared CN−S‐25 photocatalyst exhibits a desirable degradation efficiency of 95.4 % for methylene blue dye with a high degradation rate of 2.65×10−2 min−1 under visible‐light irradiation, which are 2.1 and 5.52 times those for bulk g‐C3N4, respectively as well as good reusability and stability. This study provides a simple and promising strategy to regulate the nanostructure of g‐C3N4 for highly efficient photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: The negative impact of numerous chemical compounds entering the environment from various anthropogenic sources is one of the reasons for the decline in populations and biodiversity of aboveground invertebrates. Chemical compounds can cause various effects (attracting or repelling) on insects. In laboratory conditions, the motor response of 1802 adult Philonthus decorus Gravenhorst beetles to 40 organic compounds and mixtures of compounds (acids, alcohols, ketones, phenols, aldehydes, aromatic carbohydrates solvents, and vehicle fuels) was revealed. It has been established that females of this rove species are generally less sensitive to odors. Organic acids in most cases were characterized by a repellent (oleic, acetic, oxalic, citric, formic acids) or neutral effect on beetles. The exception was some amino acids that have a moderate attractive effect. Alcohols most often exhibited the properties of moderate repellents or neutral substances for Ph. decorus imagoes. The exceptions were butyl alcohol (strong repellent of females), and methyl alcohol (moderate attractant of females). Aldehydes showed a moderate repellent effect on males and did not affect females. Aromatic hydrocarbons had a weak repellent effect on rove beetles. Organic solvents and fuels exerted no repellent or attractant effects on Ph. decorus. In most cases, they had a moderate repellent or neutral effect on these insects, with the exception of diesel fuel. This type of fuel attracted females. The majority (55%) of the chemical compounds and mixtures of compounds participating in the experiment had no attractant or repellent effect on the staphylinids. The use of organic compounds in different spheres of human activity is accompanied by their influx to and accumulation in the environment. The negative impact of those compounds can be one of the reasons for a decline in populations and biodiversity of aboveground invertebrates. Chemical compounds can potentially cause a variety of effects (attractant or repellent) on insects, including species of the Staphylinidae family. In a laboratory experiment, we identified repellent and attractant influence of 40 organic compounds and mixtures of compounds (acids, alcohols, ketones, phenols, aldehydes, aromatic carbohydrates solvents, and vehicle fuels) on Philonthus decorus Gravenhorst, 1802. The ambulatory responses of the males and females to the same chemical compounds most often varied. A strong repellent activity against both sexes of Ph. decorus was caused by oleic acid, while hexane repelled the males. Acetic acid, 1-butanol, and ammonia solution were found to be strongly repellent against females. A moderate (average) repellent activity towards male Ph. decorus was displayed by organic solvents and fuels, some alcohols (isopropanol, isoamyl alcohol, methanol, ethanol), acids (acetic, formic acid), aromatic carbohydrates (toluene, xylene), and formaldehyde. Female Ph. decorus in general were less sensitive to the odors. The list of repellents with moderate activity against the females was much shorter: solvent 646, white spirit, toluene, isopropanol, isoamyl alcohol, citric and oxalic acids, and glycerol. Moderate attractant activity for Ph. decorus was exhibited by some amino acids, alcohols, and fuel mixes: glycine and L-cysteine (for the males), and phenylalanine, methanol, and diesel fuel (for the females). The rest of the 40 chemical compounds we studied caused no ambulatory responses in Ph. decorus. The difficulties we encountered in the interpretation of the results suggest a need for further experimental studies that would expand the knowledge of the chemoecology of insects. Many continental large igneous provinces coincide with climate perturbations and mass extinctions. When basaltic plumbing systems traverse carbon-rich sedimentary rocks, large volumes of greenhouse gases may be generated. We document how intrusive sills of the Mesozoic High Arctic Large Igneous Province affected surrounding finegrained, organic-rich siliciclastic rocks of the Sverdrup Basin in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Petrographic and X-ray diffraction data from samples located near sills show the presence of high-temperature metamorphic phases (diopside, andalusite, garnet, and cordierite). Raman thermometry on organic matter yields peak temperatures of 385-400 °C near sill contacts, tailing off to far-field temperatures of ≤230 °C. Samples located >20 m from sills show no systematic change in vitrinite reflectance and have a VRo eq% value of ~2.5%, which indicates a temperature of ~210 °C. The finite element thermal modeling tool SUTRAHEAT was applied to the 17-m-thick Hare Sill, emplaced at 3 km depth at 1105 °C. SUTRAHEAT results show that contact-proximal rocks attain temperatures of >700 °C for a brief period (~1 year). By 5 years, the Hare Sill is completely solidified (<730 °C), and the temperature anomaly collapses rapidly thereafter as the thermal pulse propagates outward. By 10 years, all rocks within 10 m of the Hare Sill are between 450 °C and 400 °C, rocks at 20 m from the contact attain 200 °C, yet far-field temperatures (>50 m) have barely changed. When multiple sills are emplaced between 4 km and 6 km depth, all rocks between sills reach ~250 °C after 100 years, showing that it is possible to raise regional-scale background temperatures by ~150 °C for the observed High Arctic Large Igneous Province sill density. Vitrinite reflectance data and pyrolysis results, together with SILLi thermal modeling, indicate that much of the hydrocarbongenerating potential was eliminated by High Arctic Large Igneous Province intrusions. The SILLi model yields ~20 tonnes/m² of organic equivalent CO2 (all carbon gas is reported as CO2) from the Hare Sill alone when emplaced into Murray Harbour Formation rocks with 5.7 wt% organic carbon, and ~226 tonnes/m² by emplacement of multiple sills throughout the 2-km-thick Blaa Mountain Group with 3 wt% organic carbon. On a basin scale, this yields a total of ~2550 Gt CO2 from the Hare Sill, with ~13,000 Gt CO2 being generated by the multiple sill scenario, similar to estimates from other large igneous provinces. Much of the Blaa Mountain Group rocks now have organic carbon contents of <1 wt%, which is consistent with large volumes of carbon-species gas having been generated, likely a mixture of CO2, CH4, and other species. However, organic-rich Murray Harbour Formation rocks show no obvious reduction in organic carbon content toward the Hare Sill intrusive contacts, which suggests that not all of the carbon was lost from the sedimentary package hosting High Arctic Large Igneous Province magmas. We suggest that some of the gas generated by contact metamorphism failed to drain out for lack of high-permeability conduits, and then back-reacted to form calcite cements and pyrobitumen during cooling. Arabinose and galactose are major, rapidly metabolized components of marine particulate and dissolved organic matter. In this study, we observed for the first time large microbiomes for the degradation of arabinogalactan and report a detailed investigation of arabinogalactan utilization by the flavobacterium Maribacter sp. MAR_2009_72. Cellular extracts hydrolysed arabinogalactan in vitro. Comparative proteomic analyses of cells grown on arabinogalactan, arabinose, galactose, and glucose revealed the expression of specific proteins in the presence of arabinogalactan, mainly glycoside hydrolases (GH). Extracellular glycan hydrolysis involved five alpha- l -arabinofuranosidases affiliating with glycoside hydrolase families 43 and 51, four unsaturated rhamnogalacturonylhydrolases (GH105) and a protein with a glycoside hydrolase family-like domain. We detected expression of three induced TonB-dependent SusC/D transporter systems, one SusC, and nine glycoside hydrolases with a predicted periplasmatic location. These are affiliated with the families GH3, GH10, GH29, GH31, GH67, GH78, and GH115. The genes are located outside of and within canonical polysaccharide utilization loci classified as specific for arabinogalactan, for galactose-containing glycans, and for arabinose-containing glycans. The breadth of enzymatic functions expressed in Maribacter sp. MAR_2009_72 as response to arabinogalactan from the terrestrial plant larch suggests that Flavobacteriia are main catalysts of the rapid turnover of arabinogalactans in the marine environment. Nature has exhibited a high degree of control over the structures and functions. Supramolecules have been utilized to mimic the subtle assembly in nature. However, sophisticated synthesis of molecular skeletons or programmable design of the driving forces raises great challenges in fabricating high‐level superstructures in a controlled manner. Natural polyphenols show great promises as building blocks for a diverse of assemblies with controlled structures and functionalities. The intrinsically embedded phenolic groups (i. e., catechol and galloyl groups) are readily forming multiple molecular interactions, including coordination, hydrogen bonding, and π–π interactions with various materials of inorganic particles, organic compounds, synthetic polymers, and biomacromolecules, providing the self‐assembled structures or nanocoating on surfaces. Subsequent assembly occurred by further bonding of polyphenols to construct supraparticles. To gain control over the self‐assembly, the key lies in the interplay among the molecular interactions with one or two being dominant. A comprehensive understanding of the characteristics and mechanisms underlying hydrocarbon generation from organic matter has emerged as a pivotal challenge in deciphering the "life mystery" of oil and gas, thereby guiding strategic planning for the global petroleum industry. The swift advancements in materials science, drilling engineering, computer technology, big data, and artificial intelligence have furnished robust methodologies and tools for research into organic hydrocarbon generation. This perspective offers an analysis and synthesis of three distinct research paradigms pertinent to organic hydrocarbon generation: Theoretical analysis, experimental exploration, and numerical simulation. These three research modalities probe the mechanisms of organic hydrocarbon generation across varied scales, with their findings mutually reinforcing and validating each other. This synergy provides invaluable insights that contribute to a holistic understanding of organic hydrocarbon generation, facilitating a comprehensive assessment of the potential of subterranean oil and gas resources. Low-to-medium maturity lacustrine shale oil resources have enormous potential and are projected to play a crucial role in the massive scale-up of crude oil production in China in the near future. The in-situ conversion process is currently the only effective means of utilizing this resource. Nevertheless, significant scientific challenges and technological bottlenecks still exist. Under this circumstance, the National Natural Science Foundation of China approved an integrated project of the Enterprise Innovation and Development Joint Fund titled "The Mechanism of Low-to-medium Maturity Lacustrine Shale Oil Resource Formation and its in-situ Conversion and Exploitation". This project aims to systematically investigate the entire process of in-situ conversion for low-to-medium maturity shale oil resources and lay a solid scientific and technological foundation for advancing the smooth implementation of on-site pilot trials. This paper presents the latest progress in this field and summarizes the existing scientific and technological challenges that need to be addressed. With the foundational support of the above project, our research team has made significant progress in several fields, including the formation mechanisms of organic matter superrich shale, low-to-medium maturity shale oil enrichment area evaluation, heat and mass transfer dynamics, coupled fluid field and hydrocarbon expulsion efficiency, exploitation methods, among others. Despite these theoretical advances, several major challenges were identified, which help to further focus on the critical scientific issues, determine the in-situ conversion technique-developing direction, and formulate a feasible implementation plan for future resource utilization. The Winchcombe meteorite fell on February 28, 2021 in Gloucestershire, United Kingdom. As the most accurately recorded carbonaceous chondrite fall, the Winchcombe meteorite represents an opportunity to link a tangible sample of known chemical constitution to a specific region of the solar system whose chemistry can only be otherwise predicted or observed remotely. Winchcombe is a CM carbonaceous chondrite, a group known for their rich and varied abiotic organic chemistry. The rapid collection of Winchcombe provides an opportunity to study a relatively terrestrial contaminant‐limited meteoritic organic assemblage. The majority of the organic matter in CM chondrites is macromolecular in nature and we have performed nondestructive and destructive analyses of Winchcombe by Raman spectroscopy, online pyrolysis–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (pyrolysis–GC–MS), and stepped combustion. The Winchcombe pyrolysis products were consistent with a CM chondrite, namely aromatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, sulfur‐containing units including thiophenes, oxygen‐containing units such as phenols and furans, and nitrogen‐containing units such as pyridine; many substituted/alkylated forms of these units were also present. The presence of phenols in the online pyrolysis products indicated only limited influence from aqueous alteration, which can deplete the phenol precursors in the macromolecule when aqueous alteration is extensive. Raman spectroscopy and stepped combustion also generated responses consistent with a CM chondrite. The pyrolysis–GC–MS data are likely to reflect the more labile and thermally sensitive portions of the macromolecular materials while the Raman and stepped combustion data will also reflect the more refractory and nonpyrolyzable component; hence, we accessed the complete macromolecular fraction of the recently fallen Winchcombe meteorite and revealed a chemical constitution that is similar to other meteorites of the CM group. Black soils, which play an important role in agricultural production and food security, are well known for their relatively high content of soil organic matter (SOM). SOM has a significant impact on the sustainability of farmland and provides nutrients for plants. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) in the visible and near-infrared region has shown the potential to detect soil nutrient levels in the laboratory. However, using portable spectrometers directly in the field remains challenging due to variations in soil moisture (SM). The current study used spectral data captured by a handheld spectrometer outdoors to predict SOM, available nitrogen (AN), available phosphorus (AP) and available potassium (AK) with different SM levels. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) models were established to compare the predictive performance of air-dried soil samples with SMs around 20%, 30% and 40%. The results showed that the model established using dry sample data had the best performance (RMSE = 4.47 g/kg) for the prediction of SOM, followed by AN (RMSE = 20.92 mg/kg) and AK (RMSE = 22.67 mg/kg). The AP was better predicted by the model based on 30% SM (RMSE = 8.04 mg/kg). In general, model performance deteriorated with an increase in SM, except for the case of AP. Feature wavelengths for predicting four kinds of soil properties were recommended based on variable importance in the projection (VIP), which offered useful guidance for the development of portable hyperspectral sensors based on discrete wavebands to reduce cost and save time for on-site data collection. Amyloid fibroproliferation leads to organ damage and is associated with a number of neurodegenerative diseases affecting populations worldwide. There are several ways to protect against fibril formation, including inhibition. A variety of organic compounds based on molecular recognition of amino acids within the protein have been proposed for the design of such inhibitors. However, the role of macrocyclic compounds, i.e., thiacalix[4]arenes, in inhibiting fibrillation is still almost unknown. In the present work, the use of water-soluble thiacalix[4]arene derivatives for the inhibition of hen egg-white lysozyme (HEWL) amyloid fibrillation is proposed for the first time. The binding of HEWL by the synthesized thiacalix[4]arenes (logKa = 5.05–5.13, 1:1 stoichiometry) leads to the formation of stable supramolecular systems capable of stabilizing the protein structure and protecting against fibrillation by 29–45%. The macrocycle conformation has little effect on protein binding strength, and the native HEWL secondary structure does not change via interaction. The synthesized compounds are non-toxic to the A549 cell line in the range of 0.5–250 µg/mL. The results obtained may be useful for further investigation of the anti-amyloidogenic role of thiacalix[4]arenes, and also open up future prospects for the creation of new ways to prevent neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, water was used as an additive in the methanol-modified carbon dioxide-based eluent for the elution of some basic organic compounds from a hybrid silica column via supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC). The experiments were applied to sulfonamides, propranolol, and other organic nitrogen compounds involving aromatic rings from different classes of amine, pyrimidine, and purine with different pKa values (the pKa values for the studied analytes range from 4.6 to 10.4). The results revealed different responses to the different percentages of water addition. Adding 1~2% of water to the modifier (methanol) led to a positive effect manifested by more symmetrical peak shapes and reduced retention times for most compounds. The key factor for this improvement in the properties of chromatographic peaks is due to the adsorption of water on the silanol groups of the stationary phase, consequently resembling the phenomena observed in hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC). Moreover, the availability of hydrogen bond acceptor and donor sites in the analyte structure is an important factor to be considered when adding water as an additive to the modifier for improving the chromatographic peaks. However, introducing water in an amount higher than 3% resulted in perturbed chromatographic signals. It was also found that water as an additive alone could not successfully elute propranolol from the hybrid silica column with an acceptable peak shape; thus, the addition of a strong base such as amine salts was also necessary. The proposed use of a particular amount of water in the mobile phase could have a positive effect compared to the same mobile phase without water, improving the chromatographic peak properties of the elution of some basic organic compounds from the hybrid silica column. The qualitative impact of pollutants on water quality is mainly related to their nature and their concentration, but in any case, they determine a strong impact on the involved ecosystems. In particular, refractory organic compounds represent a critical challenge, and several degradation processes have been studied and developed for their removal. Among them, heterogeneous Fenton treatment is a promising technology for wastewater and liquid waste remediation. Here, we have developed mono- and bimetallic formulations based on Co, Cu, Fe, and Mn, which were investigated for the degradation of three model organic dyes (methylene blue, rhodamine B, and malachite green). The treated samples were then analyzed by means of UV-vis spectrophotometry techniques. Bimetallic iron-based materials achieved almost complete degradation of all three model molecules in very short time. The Mn-Fe catalyst resulted in the best formulation with an almost complete degradation of methylene blue and malachite green at pH 5 in 5 min and of rhodamine B at pH 3 in 30 min. The results suggest that these formulations can be applied for the treatment of a broad range of liquid wastes comprising complex and variable organic pollutants. This work presents a comprehensive analysis of the adsorption of selected aromatic organic compounds on activated carbons. Both the equilibrium and kinetics of adsorption were studied using UV–Vis spectrophotometry. The influence of a number of factors: pH, contact time, presence of an accompanying substance, adsorbate concentration, as well as the mass and size of adsorbent grains, on the adsorption process from aqueous solutions was investigated. Phenol, 2-nitrophenol, 3-nitrophenol, 4-nitrophenol and methylene blue (as an accompanying substance) were selected as adsorbates. GAC 1240W and RIAA activated carbons were used as adsorbents. The equilibrium data were analyzed using the generalized Langmuir isotherm equation (R2 = 0.912–0.996). Adsorption rate data were fitted using a multi-exponential kinetic equation (1 − R2 = (1.0 × 10−6)–(8.2 × 10−4)). As an additional parameter, the half-time was also used to present the influence of selected factors on the adsorption kinetics. An increase in the amount of adsorption was demonstrated with increasing contact time as well as with decreasing solution pH and adsorbent grain size. For selected systems, an increase in the adsorption rate was observed with increasing adsorbate concentration, adsorbent mass and at lower pH values. In some cases, the presence of an accompanying substance also resulted in an increase in adsorption kinetics. In the tested experimental systems, optimal conditions for adsorption were established (T = 298 K, pH = 2, contact time: 7 days, grain diameter: >0.5 mm and the ratio of the mass of the adsorbent to the volume of the adsorbate solution: 1 g/L). Managers increasingly seek to increase forest soil carbon but long‐term controls on soil organic matter (SOM) sources and stability are weakly understood. We used a 30‐year detrital input/removal treatment experiment in a deciduous forest to evaluate the importance of root and leaf litter to SOM. Inputs were assessed by excluding roots and leaves (litter) or by doubling litter inputs. In mineral soil, %SOM differed only at 0–10 cm (p = 0.11), with concentrations in the no litter and no roots treatments of 26% and 9%, respectively, lower than the controls. Cessation of litter inputs had a stronger effect on SOM than cessation of root inputs, but root litter inputs may contribute stable SOM. Doubled litter increased mineral SOM.
