Planar conjugated molecular backbones are essential for achieving high charge carrier mobilities along molecular π-stacking directions but are often concomitant with poor charge transport in other directions. This is particularly the case for molecules that are functionalized with alkyl chains, which ensure good processability in solution but introduce detrimental insulating regions. Here, we show that soluble planar dumbbell-shaped molecules, composed of two triazatruxene (TAT) units covalently bonded to a central thiophene–thienopyrroledione–thiophene (TPD) segment self-assemble into an original structure that allows efficient 3D charge transport. Grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering investigations as well as micro-focus X-ray experiments on single crystals reveal that the TAT derivatives form a columnar-nematic mesophase in which columns of stacked TAT units spaced by molten chains are interconnected by TPD bridges. Upon annealing, a crystalline phase, stemming from the parent hexagonal mesophase, is obtained with the molecular stacking direction lying in-plane. Transport measurements in the crystalline phase reveal an unusually high out-of-plane hole mobility of 0.17 cm2 V−1 s−1 and a lower limit for the in-plane mobility of 0.05 cm2 V−1 s−1. The results suggest that the TPD segments bridging neighboring stacks of TAT columns are responsible for efficient hole transport in 3D.

In order to investigate the effect of growth conditions on the film properties all through the deposition process, optical emission spectroscopy (OES) analysis have been accomplished in a governable way. The consequences of Oxygen partial pressure and film thickness on electrical, and optical properties of the films were determined. It was shown that the intensity of optical emission peaks are subjected to the discharge power and as well as the O-2/Ar flow ratio. While it is widely recognized that microstructure plays an important role in the performance of organic photovoltaics (OPV), systematic studies are often challenging, as varying the molecular packing through typical chemical means (such as sidechain tuning) often affects the molecular energy levels, thus preventing a clear correlation. In this work we present the synthesis of three perylene imide (PI) based electron acceptors with almost identical energy levels, but distinct packing tendencies. We confirm our initial hypothesis by measuring solution and solid-state absorption, cyclic voltammetry as well as characterizing the films by grazing incident wide angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS). In a second step, we repeat the characterization of the three materials in blends with two polymer donors, namely PCDTBT or PBDBT, whose energy levels are well aligned with those of the PI acceptors, and which, additionally, exhibit different degrees of structural order. We show how the initial strong difference between acceptors is partially blurred in blends, but still critical. Finally, we correlate our structural data with OPV devices made with the corresponding six blends. International audience; In this work, we demonstrate several organic amorphous donor−acceptor systems that exhibit sub-bandgap features over a more than 2 eV spectral range. An in-depth study of one of these systems, NPB:HAT-CN (NPB is N,N′-di(1-naphthyl)-N,N′-diphenyl-(1,1′-biphenyl)-4,4′-diamine and HAT-CN is 1,4,5,8,9,11-hexaazatriphenylenehexacarbonitrile), reveals that the broad sub-bandgap features are attributed to multiple electronic charge transfer (CT) state transitions, broadened by energetic disorder sourcing from the fluctuations of intramolecular conformations and by the disordered intermolecular environment. These unique CT features originate from an unconventional donor and acceptor selection that reveals new insight about photocurrent generation and nonradiative recombination. Unlike materials employed in high performing organic solar cells, the materials studied here feature large optical energy gaps with very large frontier orbital energy level offsets, creating high bandgap devices with low open-circuit voltage. In addition to multiple electronic CT levels, we reveal that the internal quantum efficiency of these multiple CT transitions is not constant but photon energy dependent and with photoluminescence that originates primarily from the second lowest electronic CT state implying slow (relative to radiative and nonradiative rates) internal conversion within the CT manifold. Overall, this class of donor−acceptor pairs provides an opportunity to probe CT states in unique ways to potentially unravel their role in carrier generation−recombination and energy loss mechanisms. ■ INTRODUCTION With more than 15% power conversion efficiency recently achieved 1 and coupled with the ability to be grown on flexible substrates on a large scale with low-cost fabrication techniques, organic solar cells are making a strong case for energy conversion applications. Most advances in power conversion efficiency are the result of impressive material and interface engineering and innovation. However, due to the lack of a complete understanding and consensus of carrier generation and recombination processes as well as loss mechanisms at charge generating donor−acceptor (D-A) interfaces, 2 the actual limits of organic solar cell performance remain unknown. In this context, intermolecular charge transfer (CT) excitations at D−A interfaces play an important role in the photophysical processes and energy losses of organic solar cells. 3−6 In order to understand how carrier generation and recombination are affected by CT states, a better comprehension of their origin and energetic distribution is crucial. In contemporary organic solar cell (OSC) research, small A-D-A molecules comprising electron donor (D) and acceptor (A) units are increasingly used as a means to control the optoelectronic properties of photovoltaic blends. Slight structural variations to these A-D-A molecules can result in profound changes to the performance of the OSCs. Herein, we study two A-D-A molecules, BTCN-O and BTCN-M, which are identical in structure apart from a subtle difference in the position of alkyl chains, which force the molecules to adopt different equilibrium conformations. These steric effects cause the respective molecules to work better as an electron donor and acceptor when blended with benchmark acceptor and donor materials (PC71BM and PBDB-T). We study the photophysics of these “D:A” blends and devices using a combination of steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic techniques. Time-resolved photoluminescence reveals the impact of the molecular conformation on the quenching of the A-D-A emission when BTCN-O and BTCN-M are blended with PBDB-T or PC71BM. Ultrafast broadband transient absorption spectroscopy demonstrates that the dynamics of charge separation are essentially identical when comparing BTCN-M and BTCN-O based blends, but the recombination dynamics are quite dissimilar. This suggests that the device performance is ultimately determined by the morphology of the blends imposed by the A-D-A conformation. This notion is supported by X-ray scattering data from the “D:A” films, and electroluminescence data and pump-push-photocurrent spectroscopy on the “D:A” devices. Our findings provide insight into the remarkable structure-function relationship in A-D-A molecules, and emphasize the need for careful morphological and energetic considerations when designing high-performance OSCs.

International audience; Pi-Conjugated push-pull molecules based on triphenylamine and 1,1,4,4-tetracyanobuta-1,3diene (TCBD) have been functionalized with different terminal arene units. In solution, these highly TCBD-twisted systems showed a strong internal charge transfer band in the visible spectrum and no detectable photoluminescence (PL). Photophysical and theoretical investigations revealed very short singlet excited state deactivation time of ~ 10 ps resulting from significant conformational changes of the TCBD-arene moiety upon photoexcitation, opening a pathway for non-radiative decay. The PL was recovered in vacuum-processed films or when the molecules were dispersed in a PMMA matrix leading to a significant increase of the excited state deactivation time. As shown by cyclic voltammetry, these molecules can act as electron-donors compared to C60. Hence, vacuum-processed planar heterojunction organic solar cells were fabricated leading to a maximum power conversion efficiency of ca. 1.9% which decreases with the increase of the arene size.

The synthesis of a novel fluorinated n‐type small molecule based on an indacenodithiophene core is reported. Fluorination is found to have a significant impact on the physical properties, including a surprisingly dramatic improvement in solubility, in addition to effectively stabilizing the lowest‐unoccupied molecular orbital energy (−4.24 eV). Single‐crystal analysis and density functional theory calculations indicate the improved solubility can be attributed to backbone torsion resulting from the positioning of the fluorine group in close proximity to the strongly electron‐withdrawing dicyanomethylene group. Organic thin‐film transistors made via blade coating display high electron mobility (up to 0.49 cm2 V−1 s−1) along with good retention of performance in ambient conditions.

The low efficiency of organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices has often been attributed to the strong Coulombic interactions between the electron and hole, impeding the charge separation process. Recently, it has been argued that by increasing the dielectric constant of materials used in OPVs, this strong interaction could be screened. In this work, we report the application of periodic density functional theory together with the coupled perturbed Kohn Sham method to calculate the electronic contribution to the dielectric constant for fullerene C-60 derivatives, a ubiquitous class of molecules in the field of OPVs. The results show good agreement with experimental data when available and also reveal an important undesirable outcome when manipulating the side chain to maximize the static dielectric constant: in all cases, the electronic contribution to the dielectric constant decreases as the side chain increases in size. This information should encourage both theoreticians and experimentalists to further investigate the relevance of contributions to the dielectric constant from slower processes like vibrations and dipolar reorientations for facilitating the charge separation, because electronically, enlarging the side chain of conventional fullerene derivatives only lowers the dielectric constant, and consequently, their electronic dielectric constant is upper bound by the one of C-60.

A simple route to the preparation of alkylamine, thioalkyl, and alkoxy monofunctionalized 4,7-di(thiophen-2-yl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole) based monomers is reported from a common fluorinated precursor. Copolymerization with a carbazole comonomer under Suzuki conditions yielded a series of analogous donor–acceptor copolymers in which the only difference was the nature of the heteroatom (N, O, or S) on the benzothiadiazole core. This was shown to have a significant impact on the wavelength and intensity of the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) absorption peak due to a combination of electronic and steric factors. Substantial differences were also observed in the solar cell performance of blends with PC71BM, with the octylamino substituted polymer exhibiting significantly lower performance than the other two polymers. This polymer also exhibited a reversible change in the optical spectra upon exposure to acid, suggesting potential as a sensing material.

Tailoring the functional properties of advanced organic/inorganic heterogeneous devices to their intended technological applications requires knowledge and control of the microscopic structure inside the device. Atomistic quantum mechanical simulation methods deliver accurate energies and properties for individual configurations, however, finding the most favourable configurations remains computationally prohibitive. We propose a ‘building block’-based Bayesian Optimisation Structure Search (BOSS) approach for addressing extended organic/inorganic interface problems and demonstrate its feasibility in a molecular surface adsorption study. In BOSS, a Bayesian model identifies material energy landscapes in an accelerated fashion from atomistic configurations sampled during active learning. This allowed us to identify several most favourable molecular adsorption configurations for C60 on the (101) surface of TiO2 anatase and clarify the key molecule-surface interactions governing structural assembly. Inferred structures were in good agreement with detailed experimental images of this surface adsorbate, demonstrating good predictive power of BOSS and opening the route towards large-scale surface adsorption studies of molecular aggregates and films.

This paper describes a one-pot Suzuki-Miyaura homopolymerization that involves in situ borylation/cross coupling of dibrominated donor-acceptor conjugated macromonomers, in contrast to the standard Stille copolymerization of thienosilole and isoindigo monomers. Reaction kinetics investigation reveals that bis(pinacolato) diboron promotes an efficient polymerization. The homopolymer showed blue-shifted absorption compared to the Stille copolymer, which is rationalized by quantum chemical calculations of a series of oligomers containing various donor-acceptor configurations. The calculations suggest that the homopolymerization of asymmetrical macromonomers likely introduced both acceptor-acceptor and donor-donor segments into the backbone. The acceptor-acceptor segment is found to contribute mostly to the blue-shift of maximum absorption wavelength. Furthermore, detailed analysis of MALDITOF ( matrix-assisted laser-desorption ionization-time of flight) spectra of these two polymers indicated that while the homopolymer is well defined, the Stille copolymer is end-capped mostly with the thienosilole moieties and/or methyl groups, implicating that destannylation and methyl transfer are the most-likely chain-termination pathways that limit high molecular weight. This is in sharp contrast to the homopolymerization, where chain-terminators are required to control the molecular weight for obtaining soluble material. The photovoltaic performances of bulk-heterojunction solar cells based on these polymers are compared.

The first representatives of star-shaped molecules having 3-alkylrhodanine (alkyl-Rh) electron-withdrawing groups, linked through bithiophene pi-spacer with electron-donating either triphenylamine (TPA) or tris(2-methoxyphenyl)amine (m-TPA) core were synthesized. The physical properties and photovoltaic performance of these novel molecules with 3-ethylrhodanine groups were comprehensively studied and compared to their full analogs having dicyanovinyl (DCV) units as the other type of well-known and frequently used acceptor groups. On one hand, the former demonstrate several advantages such as higher solubility and better photovoltaic performance in bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) organics solar cells (OSCs) as compared to the latter. Nevertheless, the former have slightly lower optical/electrochemical bandgaps and higher thermooxidation stability. On the other hand, molecules of both series based on m-TPA core along with higher solubility and higher position of HOMO energy levels have more pronounced tendency to crystalize as compared to the TPA-based molecules. Detailed investigation of the structure-property relationships for these series of molecules revealed that donor and acceptor unit combinations influence both charge generation and charge transport/recombination properties, as demonstrated by the ultrafast photoinduced absorption spectroscopy, space charge limited current measurements and transient photovoltage technique. These results give more insight how to fine-tune and predict physical properties and photovoltaic performance of small molecules having either alkyl-Rh or DCV units in their chemical structures and thus providing a molecular design guideline for the next generation of high-performance photovoltaic materials. A method is presented to self-repair cracks in embedded silver grid structures used in large area organic electronics. The repair procedure is based on electro-deposition, incited by the application of a moderate DC voltage across the crack. During this process the organic anode that is in direct electrical contact with the silver grid, functions as an appropriate medium for ion migration. Restoration of conductivity is achieved by the formation of dendritic metal structures that connect the cathodic to the anodic side of the crack. The metal dendrites decrease the gap resistance by one order of magnitude. Subsequently, another three orders of magnitude are gained upon sintering the dendrites using a high voltage pulse, yielding restored conductance levels nearly within one order of magnitude difference from native track conductance. The growth of monolayers of truxenone on Cu (111) is investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). Two distinct molecular packing motifs are observed that exist individually at low and high coverage, and coexist at intermediate states. In each case a commensurate epitaxial relationship between the molecular surface mesh and the substrate is observed.\ud \ud

An organic solar cell based on a bulk heterojunction (BHJ) of a polymer and a methanofullerene ([60]PCBM or [70]PCBM) exhibits a complex morphology that controls both its photovoltaic and mechanical compliance (robustness, flexibility, and stretchability). Methanofullerenes are excellent electron acceptors; however, they have relatively high cost and production energy (in the purest samples) compared to other small-molecule semiconductors. Moreover, [60]PCBM and [70]PCBM-typical of van der Waals solids-can be stiff and brittle. Stiffness and brittleness may lower the yield of working modules in roll-to-roll manufacturing, shorten the lifetime against mechanical failure in outdoor conditions, and jeopardize wearable and portable applications that demand stretchability or extreme flexibility. This paper tests the hypothesis that technical grade PCBM (incompletely separated but otherwise pure blends containing >= 90% [60]PCBM or [70]PCBM) could lower the cost of manufacturing organic solar cells while simultaneously increasing their mechanical stability. Measurements of the tensile modulus of five methanofullerene samples, technical grades and 99% grades of both [60]PCBM and [70]PCBM, and a 1:1 mixture [60]PCBM and [70]PCBM, along with their blends with regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), lead to two important conclusions: (1) films of pure [70]PCBM are approximately five times more compliant than films of pure [60]PCBM; BHJ films with [70]PCBM are also more compliant than those with [60]PCBM. (2) BHJ films comprising technical grades of [60]PCBM and [70]PCBM are approximately two to four times more compliant than are films made using 99% grades. Tensile modulus is found to be an excellent predictor of brittleness: BHJs produced with technical grade methanofullerene accommodate strains 1.4-2.2 times greater than those produced with 99% grades. The smallest range of stretchability was found for BHJs with 99% [60]PCBM (fracture at 3.5% strain), while the greatest was found for technical grade [70]PCBM (11.5% strain). Mechanical properties are correlated to the microstructures of the blended films informed from analyses of UV-vis spectra using the weakly interacting H-aggregate model. Photovoltaic measurements show that solar cells made with technical grade [70]PCBM have similar efficiencies to those made with higher-grade material but with decreased cost and increased mechanical robustness.

In the present work, multilayer graphene (MLG) has been demonstrated to be a promising material for improvement in power conversion efficiency (PCE) as well as stability of the polymer based photovoltaic (PV) devices. MLG, when incorporated into the active layer of the P3HT:PCBM based PV device provides additional 2D pathways for long distance electron transport, avoiding interaction with holes and hence leading to suppression of non-geminate recombination in the device. PCE of the device is shown to improve by similar to 54% due to improvement in absorbance as well as by reduction in non-geminate recombination leading to similar to 8.9% increase in short circuit current density. Also, open circuit voltage improves by similar to 13.75% owing to increase in the fermi-level splitting due to large number of charge accumulated at the electrodes. MLG also reduces the rate of degradation of the device by the factor of similar to 1.5 by suppressing the effect of generation of deep trap levels in the active layer which in turn results in improving the stability of the device.

The ability to modify or enhance the dielectric constant of semiconducting polymers can prove valuable for a range of optoelectronic and microelectronic applications. In the case of organic photovoltaics, increasing the dielectric constant of the active layer has often been suggested as a method to control charge generation, recombination dynamics, and ultimately, the power conversion efficiencies. In this contribution, the impact that the degree and pattern of fluorination has on the dielectric constant of poly(3‐octylthiophene) (P3OT), a more soluble analogue of the widely studied conjugated material poly(3‐hexylthiophene), is explored. P3OT and its backbone‐fluorinated analogue, F‐P3OT, are compared along with a block and alternating copolymer version of these materials. It is found that the dielectric constant of the polymer thin films increases as the degree of backbone fluorination increases, in a trend consistent with density functional theory calculations of the dipole moment.

Electronic polarisation contributes to the electronic landscape as seen by separating charges in organic materials. The nature of electronic polarisation depends on the polarisability, density, and arrangement of polarisable molecules. In this paper, we introduce a microscopic, coarse-grained model in which we treat each molecule as a polarisable site, and use an array of such polarisable dipoles to calculate the electric field and associated energy of any arrangement of charges in the medium. The model incorporates chemical structure via the molecular polarisability and molecular packing patterns via the structure of the array. We use this model to calculate energies of charge pairs undergoing separation in finite fullerene lattices of different chemical and crystal structures. The effective dielectric constants that we estimate from this approach are in good quantitative agreement with those measured experimentally in C60 and phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) films, but we find significant differences in dielectric constant depending on packing and on direction of separation, which we rationalise in terms of density of polarisable fullerene cages in regions of high field. In general, we find lattices containing molecules of more isotropic polarisability tensors exhibit higher dielectric constants. By exploring several model systems we conclude that differences in molecular polarisability (and therefore, chemical structure) appear to be less important than differences in molecular packing and separation direction in determining the energetic landscape for charge separation. We note that the results are relevant for finite lattices, but not necessarily for infinite systems. We propose that the model could be used to design molecular systems for effective electronic screening.

In this paper we correlate the solar cell performance with bimolecular packing of donor:acceptor bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells (OSCs), where interchain ordering of the donor molecule and its influence on morphology, optical properties, and charge carrier dynamics of BHJ solar cells are studied in detail. Solar cells that are fabricated using more ordered defect free 100% regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (DF-P3HT) as the donor polymer show ca. 10% increase in the average power conversion efficiency (PCE) when compared to that of the solar cell fabricated using 92% regioregularity P3HT, referred to as rr-P3HT. EQE and UV-vis absorption spectrum show a clear increase in the 607 nm vibronic shoulder of the DF-P3HT blend suggesting better interchain ordering which was also reflected in the less Urbach energy (Eu) value for this system. The increase in ordering inside the blend has enhanced the hole-mobility which is calculated from the single carrier device J-V characteristics. Electroluminance (EL) studies on the DF-P3HT system showed a red-shifted peak when compared to rr-P3HT-based devices suggesting low CT energy states in DF-P3HT. The morphologies of the blend films are studied using AFM and grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) suggesting increase in the roughness and phase segregation which could enhance the internal scattering of the light inside the device and improvement in the crystallinity along alkyl and pi-stacking direction. Hence, higher PCE, lower Eu, red-shifted EL emission, high hole-mobility, and better crystallinity suggest improved interchain ordering has facilitated a more delocalized HOMO state in DF-P3HT-based BHJ solar cells.

Small push pull molecules attract much attention as prospective donor materials for organic solar cells (OSCs). By chemical engineering, it is possible to combine a number of attractive properties such as broad absorption, efficient charge separation, and vacuum and solution processabilities in a single molecule. Here we report the synthesis and early time photophysics of such a molecule, TPA-2T-DCV-Me, based on the triphenylamine (TPA) donor core and dicyanovinyl (DCV) acceptor end group connected by a thiophene bridge. Using time-resolved photoinduced absorption and photoluminescence, we demonstrate that in blends with [70]PCBM the molecule works both as an electron donor and hole acceptor, thereby allowing for two independent channels of charge generation. The charge-generation process is followed by the recombination of interfacial charge transfer states that takes place on the subnanosecond time scale as revealed by time-resolved photoluminescence and nongeminate recombination as follows from the OSC performance. Our findings demonstrate the potential of TPA-DCV-based molecules as donor materials for both solution-processed and vacuum-deposited OSCs.

International audience; The ability of quantum simulations to predict the electronic structure at donor/acceptor interfaces and correlate it with the quantum efficiency of organic solar cells remains a major challenge. The need to describe with increased accuracy electron-electron and electron-hole interactions, while better accounting for disorder and environmental screening in realistic interfaces, requires significant progress to improve both the accuracy and computational efficiency of available quantum simulation methods. In the present study, the results of different ab initio techniques are compared, namely time-dependent density functional and many-body perturbation theories, with experimental data on three different polymer/fullerene heterojunctions. It is shown that valuable information concerning the thermodynamic drive for electron-hole dissociation or recombination into triplets can be obtained from such calculations performed on model interfaces. In particular, the ability of these approaches to reproduce the Veldman and co-workers classification of the three studied interfaces is discussed, showing the success and limits of state-of-the-art ab initio techniques.

The role of additives and thermal treatment in the formation of donor–acceptor copolymer organic films of PFO–DBT (poly[2,7-(9,9-dioctylfluorene)-alt-4,7-bis(thiophen-2-yl)benzo-2,1,3-thiadiazole]) with increased transport properties is addressed by resonant Auger photoemission and core-hole clock spectroscopy, which allows an analysis of the competition between the inner shell core-hole lifetime and the motion of photoexcited electrons on a femtosecond time scale. From the branching of the competing core-hole decay channels, we study the delocalization dynamics of excited electrons over empty molecular orbitals. We find evidence of ultrafast charge-carrier transfer from specific orbitals (LUMO+1) and increased coupling in copolymer assemblies when a solvent additive (1,8 diiodooctane) is added and samples are post-treated with thermal annealing. Relative conformational energies and core-hole spectra were calculated by time-dependent density functional theory.

Morphology of organic photovoltaic bulk heterojunctions (BHJs) – a nanoscale texture of the donor and acceptor phases – is one of the key factors influencing efficiency of organic solar cells. Detailed knowledge of the morphology is hampered by the fact that it is notoriously difficult to investigate by microscopic methods. Here we all-optically track the exciton harvesting dynamics in the fullerene acceptor phase from which subdivision of the fullerene domain sizes into the mixed phase (2–15 nm) and large (>50 nm) domains is readily obtained via the Monte-Carlo simulations. These results were independently confirmed by a combination of X-ray scattering, electron and atomic-force microscopies, and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. In the large domains, the excitons are lost due to the high energy disorder while in the ordered materials the excitons are harvested with high efficiency even from the domains as large as 100 nm due to the absence of low-energy traps. Therefore, optimizing of blend nanomorphology together with increasing the material order are deemed as winning strategies in the exciton harvesting optimization.

International audience; A series of conjugated polymers and oligomers previously used in organic photovoltaics and organic light-emitting diodes ( OLEDs) have been examined for the first time as photoinitiators of polymerization. They address the present and future challenges facing photopolymerization: requirement of high extinction molar coefficients, absorption over the whole visible spectrum, ability to easily withdraw or release electrons. Interestingly, these compounds initiate the cationic polymerization of epoxides or the free radical polymerization of acrylates upon exposure of the photocurable formulations to a LED emitting at 405 nm. Some of them can potentially operate under blue, green, or red laser diodes.

We use conductive atomic force microscopy (CAFM) to study the origin of long-range conductivity in model transparent conductive electrodes composed of networks of reduced graphene oxide (rGOX) and silver nanowires (AgNWs), with nanoscale spatial resolution. Pristine networks of rGOX (1–3 monolayers-thick) and AgNWs exhibit sheet resistances of ∼100–1000 kΩ/□ and 100–900 Ω/□, respectively. When the materials are deposited sequentially to form bilayer rGOX/AgNW electrodes and thermally annealed at 200 °C, the sheet resistance reduces by up to 36% as compared to pristine AgNW networks. CAFM was used to analyze the current spreading in both systems in order to identify the nanoscale phenomena responsible for this effect. For rGOX networks, the low intra-flake conductivity and the inter-flake contact resistance is found to dominate the macroscopic sheet resistance, while for AgNW networks the latter is determined by the density of the inter-AgNW junctions and their associated resistance. In the case of the bilayer rGOX/AgNWs' networks, rGOX flakes are found to form conductive “bridges” between AgNWs. We show that these additional nanoscopic electrical connections are responsible for the enhanced macroscopic conductivity of the bilayer rGOX/AgNW electrodes. Finally, the critical role of thermal annealing on the formation of these nanoscopic connections is discussed. Published version

Photoluminescence studies of the charge transfer exciton emission from a narrow-bandgap polymer-based bulk heterojunction are reported. The quantum yield of this emission is as high as 0.03%. Low temperature measurements reveal that while the dynamics of the singlet exciton is slower at low temperature, the dynamics of the charge transfer exciton emission is temperature independent. This behavior rules out any diffusion process of the charge transfer excitons and energy transfer from these interfacial states toward lower lying states. Photoluminescence measurements performed on the device under bias show a reduction (but not the total suppression) of the charge transfer exciton recombination. Finally, based on the low temperature results the role of the charge transfer excitons and the possible pathways to populate them are identified.

Ultrafast dynamics of the hole-transfer process from methanofullerene to a polymer in a polymer/PCBM bulk heterojunction are directly resolved. Injection of holes into MDMO-PPV is markedly delayed with respect to [60]PCBM excitation. The fastest component of the delayed response is attributed to the PCBM-polymer hole-transfer process (30 +/- 10 fs), while the slower component (similar to 150 fs) is provisionally assigned to energy transfer and/or relaxation inside PCBM nanoclusters. The charge generation through the hole transfer is therefore as fast and efficient as through the electron-transfer process. Exciton harvesting efficiency after PCBM excitation crucially depends on the concentration of the methanofullerene in the blend, which is related to changes in the blend morphology. Ultrafast charge generation is most efficient when the characteristic scale of phase separation in the blend does not exceed similar to 20 nm. At larger-scale phase separation, the exciton harvesting dramatically declines. The obtained results on the time scales of the ultrafast charge generation after PCBM excitation and their dependence on blend composition and morphology are instrumental for the future design of fullerene-derivative-based photovoltaic devices.

The relation between the morphology, optical, and photoconductive properties of thin-film bulk heterojunctions of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) with a series of electron-accepting siloxanes with a different number (x = 2, 4, 5) of pendant naphthalene diimide (NDIS) moieties is reported. All NDIS siloxanes show good electronaccepting properties, when blended with P3HT. Interestingly, the film (nano)morphology can be controlled by relatively small changes in the molecular structure of the NDIS siloxanes. Spin-coating from orthodichlorobenzene (ODCB) yields complex film (nano)morphologies, being correlated with the weight ratios of P3HT and NDIS siloxanes, and the molecular structure of the latter. On the other hand, all blends spincoated from chloroform (CHCl3) show good mixing of the components at the molecular level. It is inferred that the nanomorphology of the blends can greatly influence their photoconductive properties: samples spincoated from ODCB invariably display a higher photoconductance than corresponding samples spin-coated from CHCl3. This is explained in terms of a higher mobility of holes in samples spin-coated from ODCB, as measured by time-resolved microwave conductivity measurements. Transitioning perovskite photovoltaics from the rapid progress in lab-scale devices to industrially viable large area modules is a key challenge for the economic breakthrough of the technology. In this work, we demonstrate ultrasonic spray coating as a scalable and versatile linear deposition technique for high efficiency perovskite photovoltaics. We show the versatility of concurrently pumped ultrasonic spray coating by rapidly and precisely optimizing precursor ratios based on PbCl2, Pb(CH3CO2)2·3H2O, PbBr2, CH3NH3Br, and CH3NH3I to achieve highly crystalline and pinhole-free layers. Initial power conversion efficiencies of 15.7% for small scale devices and 11.7% for 3.8 cm2modules were achieved with current-voltage sweeps and tracked to 13.4% for devices and 10.4% for modules under continuous illumination and bias at the maximum power point. We report ‘broadband light-sensing’ all-polymer phototransistors with the nanostructured bulk heterojunction (BHJ) layers of visible (VIS) light-sensing electron-donating (p-type) polymer and near infrared (NIR) light-sensing electron-accepting (n-type) polymer. Poly[{2,5-bis-(2-ethylhexyl)-3,6-bis-(thien-2-yl)-pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-diyl}-co-{2,2′-(2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)]-5,5′-diyl}] (PEHTPPD-BT), which is synthesized via Suzuki coupling and employed as the n-type polymer, shows strong optical absorption in the NIR region (up to 1100 nm) in the presence of weak absorption in the VIS range (400 ~ 600 nm). To strengthen the VIS absorption, poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) is introduced as the p-type polymer. All-polymer phototransistors with the BHJ (P3HT:PEHTPPD-BT) layers, featuring a peculiar nano-domain morphology, exhibit typical p-type transistor characteristics and efficiently detect broadband (VIS ~ NIR) lights. The maximum corrected responsivity (without contribution of dark current) reaches up to 85 ~ 88% (VIS) and 26 ~ 40% (NIR) of theoretical responsivity. The charge separation process between P3HT and PEHTPPD-BT components in the highest occupied molecular orbital is proposed as a major working mechanism for the effective NIR sensing.

A novel electron-rich cyclopentadithienothiophene (9H-thieno[3,2-b]thieno[2″,3″:4′,5′]thieno[2′,3′:3,4]cyclopenta[1,2-d]thiophene, CDTT) is reported by an optimized one-pot procedure involving two sequential lithiation/acylation steps. Three novel copolymers containing the varied electron-deficient acceptors 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (BT), 5,6-difluoro-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (DFBT) and naphtho[1,2-c:5,6-c]bis[1,2,5]-thiadiazole (NT) were prepared by Stille polymerization. These three polymers show promising charge transport properties in transistor devices, with PCDTT-BT exhibiting unipolar hole mobility up to 0.67 cm2 V–1 s–1 in top gate devices utilizing gold source drain electrodes. Changing to a bilayer electrode of Al/Au resulted in ambipolar transistor behavior, with PCDTT-DFBT exhibiting balanced hole and electron mobilities of 0.38 and 0.17 cm2 V–1 s–1 respectively. These results clearly demonstrate that CDTT is a promising new building block for conjugated polymers.

none 11 no Highly soluble air-stable conjugated decamers and polymers (compounds 1−6) with alternating “sulfur-overrich” bis(3,4′-S-alkyl)-2,2′-bithiophenes as the donor units and 2,1,3- benzothiadiazoles as the acceptor units were designed and expediently synthesized with the aid of microwave and ultrasound enabling technologies. Solid-state cyclovoltammetry showed that 1−6 had oxidation and reduction potentials in the range 0.6−0.9 V and −1/−1.2 V (vs SCE), respectively, with energy gaps below 2 eV. The electronic properties of spin-coated films of pure 1−6 were investigated with nanoscale resolution by Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM). KPFM measurements showed that charge generation and separation were obtained for all films under illumination. Consequently, 1−6 were tested on single-material organic solar cells (SMOCs). In agreement with KPFM results, photovoltaic behavior was observed for all compounds with power conversion efficiencies in line with the best results obtained so far for the few donor−acceptor molecules already shown to perform in single-component solar cells. To our knowledge, this is the first time in which thiophene−benzothiadiazole co-oligomers and copolymers are shown to be photoactive materials in SMOCs. Ultra-thin films with low surface roughness that support surface plasmon-polaritons in the infra-red and visible ranges are needed in order to improve the performance of devices based on the manipulation of plasmon propagation. Increasing amount of efforts is made in order not only to improve the quality of the deposited layers but also to diminish their thickness and to find new materials that could be used in this field. In this review, we consider various thin films used in the field of plasmonics and metamaterials in the visible and IR range. We focus our presentation on technological issues of their deposition and reported characterization of film plasmonic performance.

To enhance light harvesting in organic photovoltaic devices, we propose the incorporation of a metal (aluminum) mask film in the system's usual layout. We fabricate devices in a sandwich geometry, where the mask (nanoindented with a periodic array of holes of sizes d and spacing s) is added between the transparent electrode and the active layer formed by a blend of the semiconducting polymer P3HT and substituted fullerene. Its function is to promote trapping of the incident light into the device's cavity (the region corresponding to the active layer). For d, we set a value that allows light diffraction through the holes in the relevant absorption range of the polymer. To optimize the mask structure, we consider a very simple model to determine the s leading to trapped fields that are relatively intense and homogeneous within the device. From measurements of the action spectra, we show that, indeed, such architecture can considerably improve the resulting photocurrent efficiencies-one order of magnitude in the best situation studied.

New multiple photosynthetic reaction centers were constructed from cyclophosphazene decorated multiporphyrin chromophores and a fulleropyrrolidine having a pyridine ligand (FPY). The excited state electron transfer in the self-assembled donor-acceptor assembly was investigated by using steady state absorption and emission, time-resolved emission spectroscopy and nanosecond laser flash photolysis. The effect of metal (Zn2+) coordination to porphyrin units in the multiporphyrin arrays on cyclophosphazine scaffold (P3N3Zn) was studied by comparing with metal free porphyrin assembly on a cyclophosphazene scaffold (P3N3). In P3N3Zn, the decrease of absorption and fluorescence intensity and the lowering of the amplitude of longer fluorescence lifetime with increase of FPY concentration reflect the formation of a ground state complex with an association constant of similar to 14 910 M-1. When compared to the metal-free complex P3N3, the metal-coordinated derivative P3N3Zn exhibited shortening of the singlet and triplet state lifetimes and lowering of the singlet and triplet quantum yields. The cause of the decrease of the triplet quantum yields by insertion of zinc metal is discussed along with the possible non-planarity of the porphyrin ring. From the fluorescence lifetime measurements for the P3N3Zn-FPY mixture, it is proposed that self-assembly of the donor-acceptor complex leads to charge separated species with a rate constant of 7.1 x 10(9) s(-1). The decrease of triplet state intensity and lifetime of the P3N3Zn in the P3N3Zn-FPY complex from the nanosecond transient absorption studies support the occurrence of intermolecular electron transfer in the triplet state.

The sulfinyl precursor route for the synthesis of poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) materials via an anionic polymerization procedure employing dedicated initiators is evaluated in depth. Reaction kinetics are investigated to gain more control over the polymerization, since polymerization proceeds to full conversion already on the timescale of mixing of the reaction components. Even at -78 degrees C almost full conversion of the monomer is observed after few seconds. BEH-PPVs are obtained in the range of 3000 to 16,000 g mol(-1), whereby dispersity decreases with decreasing molecular weight, allowing for materials with a PDI of 1.1 for the smallest PPV chain. Block copolymerizations were performed via sequential addition of monomers to make use of the living PPV chain ends. Bimodal product mixtures are obtained, consisting of block copolymer as well as PPV homopolymer. The block copolymer PPV-b-poly(tert-butyl acrylate) could nevertheless be separated by selective precipitation as well as preparative chromatography techniques. (c) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. To develop n-type processable polymeric materials for photovoltaic applications, a series of polymers was synthe- sized by grafting fullerene C60 onto polystyrene (PS). Grafted polymers were studied and compared with PS:fullerene blends. Electronical and electrical properties were first measured to define the minimal amount of C60 required for solar cells applica- tion. Then, thermal properties and rheological behavior of grafted polymers were analyzed to determine whether they could be processed from the melt. A throughout experimental study revealed that C60-grafted polymers exhibit two thresholds. The first threshold at 3-4 vol % (detected by electrical conductiv- ity, electron mobility, and melt viscosity measurements) is asso- ciated to the percolation of C60 molecules. The second threshold (evidenced by glass transition and melt viscosity measurements and confirmed by optical and atomic force micrograph observa- tions) at about 12-13 vol % is assumed to be related to the for- mation of C60 aggregates. We have employed a parallelized 3D FDTD (finite-difference time-domain) solver to study the electromagnetic properties of random, semicontinuous, metal films. The structural features of the simulated geometries are exact copies of the fabricated films and are obtained from SEM images of the films themselves. The simulation results show good agreement with the experimentally observed far-field spectra, allowing us to also study the nonlinear moments of the optical responses for these realistic nanostructures. These results help to further our understanding of the details of the electromagnetic response of randomly structured metal films. Our results can also be applied in the optimization of random metal nanostructures and in the design of surface-enhanced spectroscopies and other plasmonic applications.

This critical review documents the exceptional range of research avenues in 60fullerene-based monolayers showing unique and spectacular physicochemical properties which prompted such materials to have potential applications in several directions, ranging from sensors and photovoltaic cells to nanostructured devices for advanced electronic applications, that have been pursued during the past decade. It illustrates how progress in covalent 60fullerene functionalisation led to the development of spectacular surface-immobilised architectures, including dyads and triads for photoinduced electron and energy transfer, self-assembled on a wide variety of surfaces. All of these molecular assemblies and supramolecular arrays feature distinct properties as a consequence of the presence of different molecular units and their spatial arrangement. Since the properties of 60fullerene-containing films are profoundly controlled by the deposition conditions, substrate of adsorption, and influenced by impurities or disordered surface structures, the progress of such new 60fullerene-based materials strongly relies on the development of new versatile and broad preparative methodologies. Therefore, the systematic exploration of the most common approaches to prepare and characterise 60fullerene-containing monolayers embedded into two- or three-dimensional networks will be reviewed in great detail together with their main limitations. Recent investigations hinting at potential technological applications addressing many important fundamental issues, such as a better understanding of interfacial electron transfer, ion transport in thin films, photovoltaic devices and the dynamics associated with monolayer self-assembly, are also highlighted. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2007.

The quest for new materials is one of the main factors propelling recent advances in organic photovoltaics. Star-shaped small molecules (SSMs) have been proven promising candidates as perspective donor material due to the increase in numbers of excitation pathways caused by the degeneracy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level. In order to unravel the pathways of the initial photon-to-charge conversion, the photovoltaic blends based on three different SSMs with a generic structure of N(phenylenent hiophene-dicyanovinyl-alkyl) 3 ( n = 1–3), and [6,6]-phenyl-C 71 -butyric acid methyl ester (PC 71 BM) acceptor are investigated by ultrafast photoinduced absorption spectroscopy assisted by density functional theory calculations. It is shown that both electron transfer from SSMs to PC 71 BM and hole transfer from PC 71 BM to SSMs are equally signifi cant for generation of long-lived charges. In contrast, intramolecular (intra-SSM) charge separation results in geminate recombination and therefore constitutes a loss channel. Overall, up to 60% of long-lived separated charges are generated at the optimal PC 71 BM concentrations. The obtained results suggest that further improvement of the SSM-based solar cells is feasible via optimization of blend morphology and by suppressing the intra-SSM recombination channel.

Despite performance improvements of organic photovoltaics, the mechanism of photoinduced electron-hole separation at organic donor-acceptor interfaces remains poorly understood. Inconclusive experimental and theoretical results have produced contradictory models for electron-hole separation in which the role of interfacial charge-transfer (CT) states is unclear, with one model identifying them as limiting separation and another as readily dissociating. Here, polymer-fullerene blends with contrasting photocurrent properties and enthalpic offsets driving separation were studied. By modifying composition, film structures were varied from consisting of molecularly mixed polymer-fullerene domains to consisting of both molecularly mixed and fullerene domains. Transient absorption spectroscopy revealed that CT state dissociation generating separated electron-hole pairs is only efficient in the high energy offset blend with fullerene domains. In all other blends (with low offset or predominantly molecularly mixed domains), nanosecond geminate electron-hole recombination is observed revealing the importance of spatially localized electron-hole pairs (bound CT states) in the electron-hole dynamics. A two-dimensional lattice exciton model was used to simulate the excited state spectrum of a model system as a function of microstructure and energy offset. The results could reproduce the main features of experimental electroluminescence spectra indicating that electron-hole pairs become less bound and more spatially separated upon increasing energy offset and fullerene domain density. Differences between electroluminescence and photoluminescence spectra could be explained by CT photoluminescence being dominated by more-bound states, reflecting geminate recombination processes, while CT electroluminescence preferentially probes less-bound CT states that escape geminate recombination. These results suggest that apparently contradictory studies on electron-hole separation can be explained by the presence of both bound and unbound CT states in the same film, as a result of a range of interface structures.

We report the synthesis of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) by Grignard metathesis (GRIM) polymerization using the bio-derived ‘green’ solvent 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2-MeTHF). Using a standard flask-based reaction, the molecular weight distribution, regioregularity and product yield were found to be similar to those obtained under equivalent conditions using tetrahydrofuran (THF) as a reaction solvent. The synthesis was subsequently adapted to a novel “tube-in-shell” droplet-based flow reactor, using a newly developed high-solubility catalyst derived from nickel(II) bromide ethylene glycol dimethyl ether complex (Ni(dme)Br2) and 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane (dppp). Use of the new catalyst together with an increased reaction temperature of 65°C (enabled by the higher boiling point of 2-MeTHF) resulted in an approximate four-fold increase in reaction rate compared to a standard THF-based synthesis at 55°C, with full conversion reached within one minute. The purified flow-synthesized polymer had an Mw of 46kgmol−1, a low PDI of 1.4, and a regioregularity of 93%, indicating the suitability of flow-based GRIM polymerization in 2-MeTHF for the high-throughput synthesis of high quality P3HT.
